- 0:18Derek, who's the worst boss you've ever had?
- 0:23No names, only experiences.
- 0:26We don't want to.
- 0:27We don't want to out the worst boss you've ever had.
- 0:29Even though it was Becky at Blockbuster, wasn't it?
- 0:32Oh, had to be.
- 0:34You were there for Becky, right?
- 0:36Was who?
- 0:38Well, we only had.
- 0:38We had Chris and Becky.
- 0:39Now, a little bit background.
- 0:40Derek and I met or didn't.
- 0:42No, I'm sorry.
- 0:44Yeah, yeah, we met.
- 0:45We met at Blockbuster a couple times.
- 0:47Like, socially.
- 0:48Yes.
- 0:48But we.
- 0:49We.
- 0:50We friendship.
- 0:51We friendship as employees at Blockbuster in the late 90s.
- 0:56And we had two.
- 0:57Two managers.
- 0:58Yeah.
- 0:58The first was awesome in my mind.
- 1:00And the second was a little bit.
- 1:01Of she was tyrant.
- 1:03You know, the good thing about Chris was, is that she had a lot going on in her personal life.
- 1:07Yes.
- 1:07That took her distraction away.
- 1:10And that allowed us to eat unlimited Twizzlers, snacks, and then also to enjoy unlimited Dr.
- 1:19Peppers.
- 1:19Sit around.
- 1:20We were typical late teenage, early 20s blockbuster employees.
- 1:26Don't make like.
- 1:27I don't want anyone to get this sense, like, we were horrible employees.
- 1:30This is what everyone was doing.
- 1:31And you're right.
- 1:31She had too much going on to where we were kind of saints in her life, probably.
- 1:36Even though we were probably horrible employees for.
- 1:40In.
- 1:40In some regards.
- 1:41But then the next boss comes in.
- 1:44I didn't wait for her, Scott.
- 1:45Okay.
- 1:45I quit before she.
- 1:46Because I knew her reputation.
- 1:48Yeah.
- 1:49And I wanted no part of it.
- 1:50I didn't have a whole lot.
- 1:51I feel like six, eight months I was there while she was still.
- 1:54She was much more the hammer.
- 1:56She was much more like, how do I become my boss?
- 2:00So I felt like she did everything with a little bit of eye on impressing the person right over or whatever.
- 2:08I remember coming into Rent at one point and you were there with her, and she guilt tripped me about quitting.
- 2:17Yeah.
- 2:17And she just kept saying, it's because of me, wasn't it?
- 2:20And I was like, no, I just wanted to get into school.
- 2:23But then you would wink at me.
- 2:24Well, then I started working for Chris at the other block.
- 2:27Yes, that's right.
- 2:28Went over there.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:30Because again, we haven't gotten a whole lot into movie stuff here, but Derek is the movie genius.
- 2:35He's the movie genius in my life.
- 2:37He's someone I depend on for movie input.
- 2:39And that really all started right there at Blockbuster.
- 2:41And I'll tell you, Derek, just in case I've never told you this before, and we're getting off topic already, and we're throwing a big Tangent out.
- 2:48But just.
- 2:49My favorite movie ever, ever is the Big Lebowski.
- 2:54Number one, Right?
- 2:55No doubt about it.
- 2:56Perfect.
- 2:56No doubt about it.
- 2:58And I would have never in my life used one of my five free employee rentals on the Big Lebowski when I was working at Blockbuster Video.
- 3:09But Derek, we.
- 3:10We'd.
- 3:11We'd.
- 3:11Friendship already at that point.
- 3:13We'd hung out, we bawled.
- 3:14We all.
- 3:15All this stuff, right?
- 3:16And so Derek knew me enough to say, hey, man, you should try this one out.
- 3:20You might like it.
- 3:21And it was instant.
- 3:22Derek.
- 3:22It wasn't like some movies where it's like, you watch it 10 times, you're like, this is amazing.
- 3:26It was instant.
- 3:27I fell in love immediately.
- 3:28I still this day, love the movie would stop anything I'm doing to watch it.
- 3:32And.
- 3:34And that's where I was just like, this guy gets it.
- 3:38He gets it.
- 3:38Not only does he get movies, but he gets recommending it.
- 3:41And so Derek's always been the movie genius in my life.
- 3:44It was a good first impression to make.
- 3:46We were like, hey, it was.
- 3:47You provided me my favorite movie.
- 3:49Is it.
- 3:50Is it kind of a risk, though?
- 3:52Did Big Lebowski seem like a risk?
- 3:54Because then I've tried to do that with other people.
- 3:57Yeah.
- 3:58And after they watch it, they're like, either I fell asleep or I've got one friend that, like, the first seven times we tried to watch it, he would fall asleep, and he never falls asleep during movies.
- 4:08I just.
- 4:09I mean, I feel like I wreck.
- 4:11You either get it or you don't.
- 4:13Yeah.
- 4:13It's had a negative.
- 4:14Enjoy the taste of wine or you don't.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:17Like, it's just your palette.
- 4:19But how often do you think you would.
- 4:21Oh, I don't know.
- 4:23I mean, I.
- 4:24I kind of, like, I wouldn't.
- 4:26I would recommend things to you that I wouldn't recommend to, say, my dear cousin that's in our book club.
- 4:32Sure.
- 4:32Like, I wouldn't.
- 4:33I wouldn't tell her.
- 4:34I wouldn't think that she would be enjoying the Big Lebowski.
- 4:37No.
- 4:38No.
- 4:38So, I mean, like, you kind of.
- 4:40You gotta know.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:41Like.
- 4:41Like, I kind of know what I can suggest to you or to her or to Alan.
- 4:46And probably there is separating.
- 4:49And this is where I think it falls for me, is I think so highly of the Big Lebowski.
- 4:54I don't understand it when anyone doesn't like it, much less love it, or I watch it with someone, they're like.
- 5:01And I'm like, what.
- 5:02What's wrong with you?
- 5:03Yeah.
- 5:04I used to get really upset about that, but I've.
- 5:06I've.
- 5:07Yeah, I've relented.
- 5:08Like, I just kind of shrug and it's just like, that's your loss.
- 5:12That's the opposite.
- 5:13So mature.
- 5:14So back to the bosses.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:15Because this episode, Derek, is about who maybe you could call the worst boss in the history of Major League Baseball sports is a hard argument.
- 5:28We're going to get to that.
- 5:29Are we sure that March shot, at least in the modern era, doesn't have.
- 5:34A.
- 5:34I don't know.
- 5:35I think it's really close.
- 5:37March shots.
- 5:37Definitely horrible.
- 5:38And we've talked about that and we're going to get into it a little bit more in the coming.
- 5:41I think we can all agree, agree that Steinbrenner was racist.
- 5:44Like, there's a lot of racism with the.
- 5:46With the Winfield situation.
- 5:48However, he may not have done as bad a job at.
- 5:51At masking it as Mark shot was just overt.
- 5:55She didn't have Nazi memorabilia.
- 5:58I don't.
- 5:58I think there was some of that.
- 6:00There was definitely a point where she said Hitler was just misunderstood or something like that.
- 6:04Why is there always a FAS with Nazi Germany with these guys when they're like, no, Yeah.
- 6:10I just read minecomp a couple of times.
- 6:12What's the big deal?
- 6:13It's like that.
- 6:14Have you ever seen that scene?
- 6:15Did you see that scene in succession where Tom has, you know, Tom's the Fox News head and he's basically got to bring the journalist in to say, you know, to find out if he's a Nazi and he has
- 6:27to tiptoe around.
- 6:27He's like, I read mine comp a little.
- 6:30You know, I'm interested in my experience.
- 6:32Explain to me what you mean by interested.
- 6:34It's a good back and forth.
- 6:36Succession.
- 6:36I recommend succession to everyone.
- 6:38To everyone.
- 6:39Even our cousin in book club.
- 6:41Yes.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:42Everybody.
- 6:42Everybody.
- 6:43I just.
- 6:44I.
- 6:44The more you and I or the more I just dug in and read things and I was just blown away that.
- 6:50Me too.
- 6:50And I think thought he could get away with all of this.
- 6:53All this.
- 6:54But then everything.
- 6:55Right.
- 6:56I mean, he was truly a tyrant.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 6:59He was, dare I say, Trumpian.
- 7:03Yeah.
- 7:04I think too, like, the reaction.
- 7:06I know we're getting ahead of ourselves, but let's just dive in.
- 7:08The reaction of Yankee fans when he was banned.
- 7:12So the topic of our conversation today is the 1990 quote, end quote, lifetime ban of George Steinbrenner over a bribery scheme or a.
- 7:26He's.
- 7:27How would you phrase this?
- 7:28It's so Seedy.
- 7:30It is so weird.
- 7:31But basically, he paid a guy to try to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield in order to get out of Dave Winfield's contract.
- 7:40He didn't want to pay Dave Winfield.
- 7:41Yeah.
- 7:42So basically.
- 7:45For ego reasons, too.
- 7:47It's not like he's trying to get out of it because of, I don't know, who's our guy right now that's catching all the heat?
- 7:54Is it Cody Bellinger?
- 7:55Who's, who's playing not living up to their contract?
- 7:58That's been the meme.
- 8:00Vlad Guerrero.
- 8:01Okay.
- 8:01Like the last.
- 8:01All these guys, three days.
- 8:03It wasn't like Winfield was severely under producing or anything like that.
- 8:07No, no.
- 8:09It was truly ego.
- 8:10I think, I think.
- 8:11Didn't, didn't he say that basically, you know, that Steinbrenner, basically, within the first month of signing him, basically was like, I'm running you out of here.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:19Like, I don't like you.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:22Which is.
- 8:23I bet he was that way with managers.
- 8:25He was just that way, period.
- 8:26He definitely was.
- 8:27I mean, you, you know, he, he rode Billy Martin out of town more.
- 8:32Times than fired and hired him, what?
- 8:34Yeah, four or five times.
- 8:35I mean, it was just.
- 8:36Do you remember his Saturday Night Live appearance?
- 8:38Do you remember him?
- 8:40I mean, he hosted it.
- 8:41Yes, but just there's a, there's a famous sketch in there, if you're a baseball fan of stuff.
- 8:46Steinbrenner being the boss of, like, a bodega and talking about how he has to, like, how insane would it be to have a boss that hires and fires and hires and fires, poking and poking fun at himself.
- 8:59Yeah, but.
- 9:00And it's just, I don't know, it is part of who he is.
- 9:04And what's interesting on that is, like, and I, I, I listened to a lot of the book that we talked about.
- 9:10Mike Vaccaro.
- 9:11Yeah, I believe so.
- 9:12And one of the things that you really get out of that, too, was though, like, with Billy Martin, for example, being the main one here, is that he truly did love Billy Martin.
- 9:24Like, he, he loved him.
- 9:26And I think it was just like that's how he was.
- 9:28He was just kind of like flying off the handle.
- 9:31Zero patience, giant ego.
- 9:33And I think when you throw all that into one guy that has millions of dollars at his disposal, it just becomes a mess.
- 9:41And I think Winfield got the best of him.
- 9:43Yeah.
- 9:44In the contract, he felt 100.
- 9:46I think he felt screwed over from the beginning.
- 9:48I think he hated the little clause where he had to give money to Winfield's foundation.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54I I think.
- 9:54And this is where he found Spyra, right?
- 9:57Yes.
- 9:57Yeah.
- 9:58Is it Spyra or Spira?
- 9:59I think it's Spiro.
- 10:00Okay.
- 10:01I believe.
- 10:02But I don't know.
- 10:03I'm going or no, I guess Aspira.
- 10:08Howie.
- 10:08Let's just call him Howie.
- 10:09Okay.
- 10:10I'm gonna say the CD character that was basically doing the legwork to try and defame Winfield for the benefit of Steinbrenner, basically.
- 10:23Right?
- 10:23Yeah, yeah.
- 10:24Just the absolute little.
- 10:25Can whatever.
- 10:26Can we just get in?
- 10:27I, I know we're like, I've asked for a time crunch on this, but the Steinbrenner story, like he was a coach.
- 10:36He coached football at Northwestern in Purdue.
- 10:39And then his father said, hey, I got a shipbuilding business.
- 10:42Why don't you come on in here?
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:43And he just started printing money.
- 10:46Yep.
- 10:46And then he, he basically bought the Yankees in 1973 for $10 million.
- 10:52He put in 170 grand of his own money.
- 10:55That was it.
- 10:55Yeah.
- 10:56And.
- 10:56And a couple things there.
- 10:58One, he's in Cleveland, he's not in New York.
- 11:01There's not a real tie to the Yankees necessarily other than the Yankees were the Yankees as they are still.
- 11:07But the quote I love the most from that point was after he bought them.
- 11:12His quote was, I won't be active in the day to day operations of this baseball club at all.
- 11:19I'll stick to ship building.
- 11:21I'll build 1973.
- 11:23He said that after he bought the Yankees.
- 11:25You know, like the, the, you know, I don't know if you've anybody that has any association with Chick Fil A, but I'm pretty sure, like Chick Fil A, like you put 15 grand in and that's it.
- 11:37And then there's a, you know, there's some pretty advantageous.
- 11:42There's an advantageous business arrangement for Chick Fil A, and that's the reason they make all their money.
- 11:46But 15 grand off the top, like they don't want you to be in debt.
- 11:50Exactly.
- 11:51This felt like the Chick Fil A deal of major league baseball.
- 11:56Yes.
- 11:57Bought the Yankees in 1973.
- 12:00I know that's post mantle and all the, the heyday, but like he literally put down what.
- 12:08He put down.
- 12:102%.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:12I.
- 12:13How do you pay.
- 12:13How do you put down 2% for a.
- 12:17For the New York Yankees?
- 12:18I mean, and I mean, just thinking about from that, that standpoint till now, like what the Yankees are worth now.
- 12:26Oh, I mean, like if I could rewind and just be like, hey, dad, buy the Yankees.
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:35It only takes.
- 12:36Yeah.
- 12:36You're gonna have to take a second mortgage or whatever.
- 12:39But that's really all it takes at this point, you know?
- 12:41Well, I always think that with, like, stocks.
- 12:44Yes.
- 12:44It's like, why didn't you just put all of it in that?
- 12:46That's like.
- 12:47Well, yeah, we didn't have that much, pal.
- 12:50But more than anything, just by the Yankees, just somehow by the Yankees.
- 12:54Just by the Yankees, by the.
- 12:55By the Cowboys.
- 12:56What's the big deal?
- 12:57Yeah, it's a growth business.
- 13:00Yeah.
- 13:01So he buys the team in 73.
- 13:03Yeah.
- 13:04Not going to be part of the day to day that doesn't last long at all.
- 13:08He basically entrenches himself in it also kind of gets a little bit of the limelight, I guess, that comes with being the owner of the New York Yankees.
- 13:20This guy from Cleveland that's building ships that none of us would care about, basically.
- 13:25And now all of a sudden, he's the owner of the New York Yankees.
- 13:28Everything that comes with that, and he builds pretty quickly.
- 13:32He's part of some great Yankees teams in the.
- 13:35In that mid-70s.
- 13:37Right, right.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:39So they go the World Series, get swept in 76 by the great Cincinnati Reds.
- 13:44They're good.
- 13:4577, 78, all the way into the early 80s.
- 13:48That's basically.
- 13:49They lose to the Dodgers, Reggie Jackson.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:51And that's what pissed Steinbrenner off, right?
- 13:54Yes.
- 13:54Yeah, they lost to the Dodgers.
- 13:57Yes.
- 13:58And what year?
- 14:0080, right?
- 14:01I believe so.
- 14:01Yeah, I believe so.
- 14:03But that's what that also, I mean, he was just obviously a tyrant.
- 14:06So all that set him off.
- 14:08Yeah.
- 14:09They won the world series, though, 77, 78.
- 14:12Yeah.
- 14:12Get swept by the Reds, win back to back, and then in 80, I believe it was, they lost the Dodgers.
- 14:18We're doing this in Scott's living room, and I'm looking outside, and Scott, there is large sprays of water coming from your pool.
- 14:33We're wrong, Derek.
- 14:34Dang it.
- 14:34We're wrong.
- 14:35What was.
- 14:35I hate it when we're wrong about sports on our own sports podcast?
- 14:39Well, the thing is, it just did it a couple times.
- 14:41I'm sorry, Scott.
- 14:42I didn't mean for you to get up.
- 14:43Oh, okay.
- 14:43No, you're good.
- 14:44The thing is, is that, like, this happens on every podcast I do, which is we.
- 14:48I.
- 14:48I can't anticipate where we're going with things.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:52So I don't have the information on hand.
- 14:54Therefore, we have to guess.
- 14:56Yes.
- 14:56And that.
- 14:57And that's going to lead us to be wrong from time to time.
- 15:00Yeah, I.
- 15:02And Now I'm just completely scrambling.
- 15:05It was 81.
- 15:06Okay.
- 15:06The Dodgers in 81.
- 15:09We were very close.
- 15:10Save your emails.
- 15:11Little disheartening.
- 15:12Save your emails.
- 15:14There was one point in my life I don't know if you.
- 15:16I don't even know his name.
- 15:17There's this kid on Instagram that's like this amazing sports knowledge.
- 15:23Whatever.
- 15:23He's maybe like 16, 15 years old, and he wants to be a sportscaster.
- 15:27All this stuff.
- 15:27But anyways, his thing is, like, he'll go on this other show sometimes and they're like National League MVP go.
- 15:36And he'll just start with like, 1947 and go to press.
- 15:40Like somebody with presidents.
- 15:41Exactly.
- 15:42And I used to be that kid.
- 15:45Does he know?
- 15:46Catch me on the 1980 World Series.
- 15:48And now I kind of like.
- 15:50It wrecks me a little bit there.
- 15:51It wrecks me.
- 15:52But that's fun.
- 15:53It's fun.
- 15:53It's also 47 years.
- 15:55Six.
- 15:5546 years ago.
- 15:56Like 45 years ago.
- 15:57You got to give yourself some grace.
- 15:59Yeah.
- 15:59And we've had a lot going on since then.
- 16:01We had the blockbuster, all that stuff.
- 16:03Stuff.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:03True.
- 16:04Labowski.
- 16:05Yeah.
- 16:07So, yeah.
- 16:07Fired and rehired Billy Martin five times.
- 16:11Constantly humiliating his players.
- 16:14Basically loved using the media.
- 16:16Yeah.
- 16:17And really the messages.
- 16:19Controlling his GM to the point where he was the gm.
- 16:22It was like the GM was worthless because it was even more worthless than the manager.
- 16:26Some great stories post band.
- 16:28And I know we'll probably touch on this a little bit, but.
- 16:30Yeah.
- 16:31There are some people that argue that Steinbrenner basically getting banned for three years allowed the GM not to be forced to trade people.
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:43We're going to keep Steinbrenner said, go shop Bernie Williams.
- 16:48Yeah.
- 16:48And the GM was like, I am not trading Bernie Williams.
- 16:52Yeah.
- 16:52He.
- 16:53So he called every team.
- 16:54Did you see this?
- 16:55Yes.
- 16:56He called every team.
- 16:57Never talked about Bernie Williams and said, hey, nobody wants Bernie Williams.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02Because we didn't talk about it.
- 17:03Exactly.
- 17:03Nobody asked about him.
- 17:04Nothing.
- 17:05So I'm.
- 17:06He's.
- 17:06He's gonna stay here and then becomes, you know, a pillar.
- 17:10So it's just.
- 17:11It's.
- 17:12You know.
- 17:13Yeah.
- 17:14Well, Steinbrenner was never in the mindset of build.
- 17:18Right.
- 17:19It was always.
- 17:20It was when Now.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:21Win at all costs.
- 17:22There's deal.
- 17:23Any bright shiny prospect for an old.
- 17:27A lot of times the.
- 17:29Has been beyond their prime.
- 17:31But a name kind of.
- 17:32You know, and really that J.
- 17:34Buer trade that continued famous well into the.
- 17:3790S, even in the early 2000s, that approach and it was his kind of shadow, I think that was always cast and making that.
- 17:44No, there's a famous scene in Seinfeld.
- 17:47I know you're, I don't think you're a sign Seinfeldian, but there's a famous scene where George appears to be dead.
- 17:53So Steinbrenner goes to George's parents house to tell him that George is dead.
- 17:57Yeah.
- 17:58And George's dad is just, it's Ben Stiller's dad, Jerry.
- 18:02He is just rocking back and forth and then all of a sudden he just jumps up and screams at Steinbrenner.
- 18:10Why did you trade Jay Buhner and Steinbrenner is like Ken Phillips.
- 18:14Ken Phillips.
- 18:14We thought, we, we thought, we thought it was like, you know, he's just.
- 18:18His son is dead.
- 18:19He cannot handle the fact that, that Jay Buer like is.
- 18:23It's, it's a hilarious scene.
- 18:25We rewatched it the other day.
- 18:26But it's just like it also embodies what those people thought about Steinbrenner because when he was banned, like there are a dozen news like segments on YouTube of the fans reaction when he was banned.
- 18:40Like they, there's standing ovations.
- 18:42There are people saying maybe we can get this thing back because they finished that year with the worst record in baseball in 90.
- 18:48Yeah, like they were, they were, nobody's going to the games.
- 18:52They were lower than low.
- 18:54And they thought that this was basically a life preserver.
- 18:57Yeah, the fans did.
- 18:59And I'm not so sure that the players didn't think that as well.
- 19:03Oh, they were very happy.
- 19:05The fact that he was not going to be there on a day to day basis.
- 19:08But one of the things.
- 19:11So basically, do you want to set up why he gets banned?
- 19:17Yeah, go ahead.
- 19:19Well, I mean I'm just like the whole idea, like again it all comes back to Winfield and the contract and just basically Steinbrenner then trying to weasel his way out of it or whatever.
- 19:34A little bit of background on that, a little bit was that Winfield did have a rough 81 at the end of the season, which led Steinbrenner to calling him Mr.
- 19:47May as opposed to Mr.
- 19:50October.
- 19:51Reggie Jackson, who had had some heroic moments for, for the Yankees prior to.
- 19:56So basically Steinbrenner and, and part of this contract is Steinbrenner also not only has to pay Dave Winfield, but make mandatory yearly payments to the Dave David Winfield Foundation.
- 20:12Steinbrenner basically withholds the hoes.
- 20:15Winfield sues Steinbrenner then goes on to how hire Howie Spira.
- 20:23A desperate Bronx gambler is the word that I saw written.
- 20:28But really, this guy was seedy and just almost like constantly trying to pull the con.
- 20:34It felt like he was just a con man to some degree.
- 20:37Or a.
- 20:37Or a.
- 20:38Was a degenerate gambler.
- 20:40Yes.
- 20:41And basically paid him $40,000 to disgrace Winfield in the end.
- 20:46Yes.
- 20:47But he was a publicist.
- 20:48Yes.
- 20:49Did you say that Spiro was.
- 20:51Yes.
- 20:51Yeah.
- 20:51Did you?
- 20:52Okay, my bad.
- 20:52No, I did not, because.
- 20:54But he was a publicist for the Winfield Foundation.
- 20:56Yes, exactly.
- 20:57And that was the connection there.
- 20:58That was the thought that this guy's on the inside.
- 21:02I can use him as a mole.
- 21:03And Spiro went to Steinbrenner.
- 21:07It wasn't the other way initially.
- 21:08Spira had been trying to offer up help to Steinbrenner for a while on.
- 21:12Multiple fronts, I think for the gambling debts.
- 21:16Like, he thought this would be a way to possibly score quick cash.
- 21:19Exactly.
- 21:20To not get his legs broken.
- 21:21Yes, no doubt.
- 21:23So basically the whole thing goes awry.
- 21:27Faye Vincent, who is the commissioner at that time, just who's really.
- 21:32This is very early in his somewhat short tenure as the commissioner.
- 21:37Giamani had just died, I believe about a year and a half prior to all of this.
- 21:42Hey, speaking of which, can I.
- 21:44A quick 30 second aside.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:47I think I have a new look.
- 21:50My white well for this podcast is Spike Lee.
- 21:52I've been very adamant about that from the show.
- 21:55I think my 1B white well, though would be this.
- 21:59Your favorite baseball player of all time is Pete Rose.
- 22:01I know I'm possibly misrepresenting that you have pushed back on this, but I'm just.
- 22:05For the sake of the podcast entertainment,.
- 22:07He is not one of my least favorite humans.
- 22:10Favorite baseball players.
- 22:11Okay.
- 22:12Paul Giamatti is 100% certain that his father died due to Pete Rose.
- 22:18So we get Paul Giamatti on the podcast and you give him the Tim Brown treatment where he's like, my dad died from Pete Rose.
- 22:28You bow up.
- 22:29And do you remember that?
- 22:30And we just.
- 22:31And we just make podcast history.
- 22:35I mean, Pete would say, I didn't kill him.
- 22:39Right?
- 22:39The two to three packs of cigarettes and being 200.
- 22:43Yeah, Terry.
- 22:46Overweight lifestyle did it.
- 22:47But we don't have to go down that road.
- 22:50I just put it on the bulletin board.
- 22:52Yeah, exactly.
- 22:52I like it as a podcast idea.
- 22:54I'm sure we can get Oscar nominated Paul Giamatti on the pod to talk about something deeply, deeply personal.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:02Back to Spira.
- 23:03That would be so awkward.
- 23:06But it would be.
- 23:07It would Be good.
- 23:08Your play here, Derek should have been to say, hey, we're gonna have him on, right.
- 23:14To talk about.
- 23:15I don't know, has he had any dealings with any sports movie ever?
- 23:19Paul Giamatti?
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:21He made a wrestling movie once, I believe, called Win Win.
- 23:24Okay, didn't see it.
- 23:25But you could say, hey, we're gonna have him on talk about.
- 23:27And then you don't tell me and you just say, hey, Paul, Scott's favorite player of all times, Pete Rose.
- 23:34Can you give us your thoughts on Pete Rose and the impact he's had on your face?
- 23:37And then Scott will defend.
- 23:39No, I'm gonna get like some music in the background.
- 23:41I'm gonna get my voice real low.
- 23:44Be like, Paul, I'm gonna give him the Jim Gray.
- 23:47Yes.
- 23:48Treatment.
- 23:49Love it.
- 23:50Hey, Paul Scott loves Pete Rose.
- 23:54And then just slowly step away from the mic.
- 23:57I'm just imagining super animated upset him.
- 24:01Yeah.
- 24:02Like, what's the wine movie Sideways?
- 24:04You see it a few times.
- 24:05Yeah.
- 24:05You probably see it.
- 24:06I'm not drinking anymore.
- 24:07Definitely a specialty of his or whatever.
- 24:10And that's what it was.
- 24:11He's a good blow up guy.
- 24:13I think that's what it would turn into.
- 24:17So anyways, Commissioner Faye Vincent.
- 24:23Now, the reason, the reason that this comes out is because Spirit gets indicted.
- 24:28Yes.
- 24:29On eight counts of trying to extort money from Steinbrenner and Winfield.
- 24:33Yeah.
- 24:34So basically he was playing their groups get together and go, hey, this dude's trying to extort us.
- 24:39Yes.
- 24:40And the feds are like, oh, really?
- 24:41And then that's how all this comes out.
- 24:44Exactly.
- 24:45Steinbrenner kind of did himself in with the entire plan for the most part.
- 24:50If we can get into the weeds for real quick.
- 24:53So all this comes out.
- 24:56Fay has a hearing with Steinbrenner the day after July 4th.
- 25:00It's on July 5th.
- 25:02Yeah.
- 25:03And basically they have this long.
- 25:07I think it ends up being over two days that the transcript is, I believe, is out there.
- 25:11It's over 400 or close to 400 pages.
- 25:14But basically, Steinbrenner had no answers.
- 25:16His, his, his reasoning for being or giving Spirit money changes throughout the deposition.
- 25:24I will call it deposition hearing testimony.
- 25:27He routes the 40 grand through two law firms.
- 25:30He cited sympathy for Spira's money problems.
- 25:34He also spot cited a fear that Spira might harm him or his family.
- 25:39And also worried that Spiro would expose Lou Pinella's gambling.
- 25:44Yes.
- 25:46Vincent later cleared Pinella, whose betting amounted to small legal wagers at the racetrack.
- 25:50Yeah.
- 25:51Lou Pinella at the Racetrack.
- 25:52Going to Lou Pinella at the racetrack, like, instantly zoomed up my things that I wish that I could go back in time and do.
- 25:59Could you imagine going and betting the ponies?
- 26:02That would be a lot.
- 26:03It would be a lot of fun.
- 26:04And do you know where Lou Pinello was at this point of the band?
- 26:10What?
- 26:11Do you know where he was with Reds, wasn't he?
- 26:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:15He was managing.
- 26:16And he's just taking champion.
- 26:17He's just taking straights.
- 26:19He took his distance.
- 26:20Took his distance.
- 26:21They.
- 26:22A couple of key exchanges from the transcript that I wanted to highlight.
- 26:27Vincent asked Steinbrenner why he just didn't go to the police.
- 26:30And Steinbrenner said nobody could protect him.
- 26:32Quote, they shot the president of the United States and they shot the pope.
- 26:37So basically he's like, pope, you, the president and the pope.
- 26:42Steinbrenner, like, right there with those guys.
- 26:44I mean, if they can reach those guys, they can get George Stein.
- 26:47Exactly.
- 26:50When asked if anybody had warned him that Spyro would use the money to pay off gambling debts, he replied, I never thought of that.
- 26:57Okay, George.
- 26:58Yeah.
- 26:59And then they.
- 27:01John Dowd was the investigative.
- 27:03Yeah, investigation.
- 27:05Yeah, yeah, Investigation.
- 27:08Yeah.
- 27:08He's the one that wrote the report.
- 27:12How do you get that job just to be so, like.
- 27:15I don't know, Attorney.
- 27:17Right.
- 27:18Yeah.
- 27:18And.
- 27:18And so.
- 27:20Yeah, I mean, just to be.
- 27:22Because you like, on the Pete thing, he just gets full access to everything.
- 27:28He gets full access here too.
- 27:29Yeah.
- 27:30And it's just kind of like, seems like I wouldn't mind doing that.
- 27:36Did you read this?
- 27:36That basically Steinbrenner was the president of the u.
- 27:40S.
- 27:40Olympic committee?
- 27:42No, I didn't see anything.
- 27:43And the reason that he wanted to walk away, retire before you can fire me and get this ban was that he didn't want to lose that gig with the, like, he.
- 27:55He read the cards.
- 27:57He knew what was about to happen.
- 27:58Sure.
- 27:59So he was like, maybe I can save this.
- 28:03You know, going into 92 Olympics would have been.
- 28:08Yeah, 96 was Atlanta.
- 28:10I want to say 92, it's Athens, but I don't think that's right.
- 28:13Doesn't matter.
- 28:16But basically, Vincent didn't want the lifetime ban.
- 28:19No, he wanted a two year suspension, which is ultimately what Steinbrenner ended up getting, more or less.
- 28:26And that's that basically he wanted to.
- 28:30He was worried about damaging his legacy and he wanted to keep his Olympic committee vice presidency, which he called at the time.
- 28:37Steinbrenner.
- 28:37The most important thing in my life right now yes.
- 28:40More important than the Yankees.
- 28:41Scott.
- 28:41I can't be accurate.
- 28:43The.
- 28:45He did not want to be suspended.
- 28:46It's kind of like Trump with the impeachment.
- 28:48Yeah.
- 28:49And that's what Vincent sat down in 2017 for an interview, and he said that he basically did not one.
- 28:56One did not want one word out there, which was suspension, and that Vincent tried to talk him out of the deal he brought to him.
- 29:05Exactly.
- 29:06Steinbrenner basically accidentally got himself suspended.
- 29:09I think.
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:10I don't think that was even.
- 29:11But no, like, Vincent's like, we're gonna do two years.
- 29:13And he's like, no, I want a lifetime ban.
- 29:15I can't have suspension over my legacy.
- 29:17Exactly.
- 29:18And even Stein, like, even Vincent, 25 years later was like, is it.
- 29:21He's an idiot.
- 29:22It was a terrible mistake.
- 29:23Yeah.
- 29:24The whole thing just seemed like a blunder on Steinbrenner.
- 29:27Steinbrenner also is quoted as saying, you know, I wanted to be done with baseball.
- 29:32I was fed up.
- 29:33They weren't winning.
- 29:34They obviously were in the.
- 29:36In the doldrums.
- 29:36But obviously, too just like, based off of everything we see from Steinbrenner before that, that's just a classic knee jerk.
- 29:42Steinbrenner overreaction.
- 29:44I'm done with this type.
- 29:45Yeah.
- 29:46That's what I'm saying.
- 29:46He didn't really put any thought through about what would exactly take place.
- 29:51Yeah.
- 29:51So it's very.
- 29:52The entire thing is very indicative of him.
- 29:55And his entire time is the owner.
- 29:57Of the Yankees, but also very well.
- 30:00Vincent the whole time believed that Steinbrenner wanted this lifetime ban as.
- 30:06And then would just be puppet master.
- 30:07He would just run the team through that.
- 30:10He believed that he was going to be able to do that and run the.
- 30:13The.
- 30:13The team.
- 30:14But he blocked.
- 30:15Do you see this, Vincent?
- 30:16One of the contingencies was Vincent put strict no contact rules.
- 30:20Yeah.
- 30:21And made employees sign periodic affidavits confirming they had not been in touch with him.
- 30:25Exactly.
- 30:26Like, under the oath, basically, like, so.
- 30:29Anyway, you know, he was still sneaking.
- 30:31In there, but Hank Steinbrenner's 33, and right off the bat says, no, I'm not.
- 30:37I'm not taking this out.
- 30:38I'm out.
- 30:39I don't want this.
- 30:40He had already worked with his father.
- 30:42He was living on an 860 acre horse farm at the time in Florida and was like, this is too good.
- 30:50Yeah.
- 30:51To.
- 30:51To take over the New York Yankees now at 33.
- 30:55Like, I'm still an idiot at 33, but I'm like, I Know, slightly above idiot.
- 31:01Yeah, yeah.
- 31:02I'm running into the ground.
- 31:03I mean, you can't run it.
- 31:04I mean, it's already run into the ground.
- 31:06All you can do is be a hero.
- 31:07You can only win.
- 31:08You can only win.
- 31:09But also, don't you think there was a bit of that where Hank also knew, if I take this, yeah, it means my dad's just going to be riding my ass even harder, probably.
- 31:18When asked why he liked horses, Hank said, because the horses don't talk back.
- 31:23Gosh.
- 31:27As he left Vincent's office, Steinbrenner asked Vincent, so how long will this last?
- 31:35After agreeing to a lifetime ban, looked Vincent in the face and said, how long is this going to last?
- 31:42Did you see this?
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:43And it's a legitimate question.
- 31:45I think even though he had just signed a lifetime, I almost feel like even when it dawned on him what had happened.
- 31:54Right.
- 31:54He had.
- 31:55And again, this is the ego and the money, but I think he had no question in his mind that he wouldn't be able to get back in.
- 32:05Right.
- 32:05For sure.
- 32:06Yeah.
- 32:07So we talked about the stadium reaction.
- 32:11The Yankees were playing Detroit at home, a day game.
- 32:15There were no smartphones, so the news started filtering from fan to fan via the transistor radios of the fans listening to the play by play.
- 32:25Yes.
- 32:25Yeah.
- 32:25God bless.
- 32:26Radio announcing over the.
- 32:29Or the.
- 32:29The announcers over the radio.
- 32:31Play by play guys announcing that Steinbrenner had a lifetime ban.
- 32:35Yeah.
- 32:35Fans chanted, no more.
- 32:37George drowned out take me to the ball game.
- 32:41By switching it to Goodbye, George Chance.
- 32:44The Yankees won 6 to 2,.
- 32:49And that became the beginning of the dynasty.
- 32:51Right there at Mickey Mantle's restaurant, the music stopped for Vincent's announcement on TV and someone yelled, he's out of here.
- 32:58Very loudly.
- 33:01It is just so wild, though, because they also love him.
- 33:07You know what I mean?
- 33:07Well, some of the players did love him.
- 33:09It sounded like it was a divided locker room.
- 33:11Well, and the fans even.
- 33:12Right.
- 33:12I even feel like when all is said and done with George Steinberg get away from this moment.
- 33:17They all give him too much credit now.
- 33:20And they feel like there has been a.
- 33:23But that is like that's gonna happen with Jerry Jones.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:27Like all of a sudden we're going to.
- 33:29It's been 30 years of nothing, Scott.
- 33:31He's going to die some sometime in the next five to 10 years.
- 33:35Maybe, maybe not.
- 33:37And unless he brings a Super bowl in here at some point.
- 33:39But he'll be reclaimed.
- 33:41He'll be reclaimed.
- 33:42No doubt.
- 33:42Very, very good.
- 33:44It'll Be basically whoever takes over, you know, will finally win some Super Bowls once he's out of there.
- 33:49Stephen.
- 33:50Yeah.
- 33:51And then we'll be like, it's because of the business acumen that Jerry was able to.
- 33:57God bless.
- 33:58This is not a Cowboys podcast.
- 33:59I apologize.
- 34:00I apologize.
- 34:04Never apologize.
- 34:04Derek.
- 34:05Star podcast.
- 34:09So whatever we want, it is.
- 34:12You're.
- 34:12You're not wrong.
- 34:13There are no rules.
- 34:15The Yankees, two weeks after the ruling, played.500 baseball.
- 34:20Did you know that?
- 34:22Yeah, No, I don't think I knew it.
- 34:24I think, I mean, they finished like 67.
- 34:28It was like 67.
- 34:29Yeah.
- 34:30And 95.
- 34:31Something like that.
- 34:33Which.
- 34:33That was the monkey off their back.
- 34:34That's what they needed to play 500 baseball.
- 34:37Mattingly was constantly hurt past his prime.
- 34:41Jesse Barfield wanted to be traded.
- 34:43Did you see that?
- 34:44Did you have a Toronto Blue Jays Jesse Barfield flashback?
- 34:48Oh, I love Jesse Barfield.
- 34:50Like, Jesse Barfield and George, like, forever are the initial introduction to the Blue Jays for me.
- 34:59Yeah, they were awesome.
- 35:02One little Deion Sanders was on this team.
- 35:06Yeah.
- 35:06He was hitting 1.
- 35:0858 at the time.
- 35:09As soon as George.
- 35:11Now, granted, I know this was already in.
- 35:13In the works, but as soon as it looked like the season was lost.
- 35:18Yeah.
- 35:18He hit the deuces and went to Atlanta to play for the Falcons.
- 35:22Yeah.
- 35:23And then by 1992, he was playing for the Braves in a World Series and hitting.304.
- 35:28Scott.
- 35:281992.
- 35:30I don't know if we appreciate how freaking amazing Dion Sanders was.
- 35:34We've got to do a pod of Dion.
- 35:37Yeah.
- 35:37Like, it can just be a general 30 for 30 type podcast.
- 35:41We're gonna have opportunities because we're gonna.
- 35:43In the 90s, we're gonna come up to the day, I mean, not to completely rip off the 30 for 30, but where he tried to do both in one day.
- 35:51Yeah.
- 35:51Sorry.
- 35:52Which is amazing.
- 35:52But there's even more than that there.
- 35:54There was that by helicopter.
- 35:55Yes.
- 35:56Yeah.
- 35:57Played.
- 35:58God, I can remember being so excited.
- 36:00Falcons.
- 36:01Yeah.
- 36:03I think he did day.
- 36:04During the day.
- 36:05Oh, Falcons at 12.
- 36:06And then showed up for the seven o' clock baseball game.
- 36:09Exactly.
- 36:09I think you're right.
- 36:10But I believe he ends up not playing in the baseball game.
- 36:13Right.
- 36:13Yeah.
- 36:14Probably something that kind of takes a little bit longer and probably when he gets there.
- 36:18And I mean, again, at that point, it's playoff baseball.
- 36:20You can't do something just for the show at that point.
- 36:24But Dion was amazing.
- 36:25But I don't know.
- 36:29Steinbrenner.
- 36:30Sweet, sweet George.
- 36:31You know, the one thing, though, I.
- 36:32Bet with George Derek, he was freshly shaved every day.
- 36:37And that was a rule.
- 36:38Yeah, that was a rule for him.
- 36:40No facial hair, no long hair.
- 36:42The Yankees have relaxed on that last couple years.
- 36:44Oh, definitely.
- 36:45I think you kind of have to, right?
- 36:46Sure.
- 36:47But the.
- 36:49I wonder sometimes, do you think they used products from our good friends at Sterling Soaps?
- 36:54If they didn't, they should have.
- 36:56They definitely should have.
- 36:57Scott, we had an event the other day and I needed a shave.
- 37:01Like, I needed to clean up my beard.
- 37:02Yeah.
- 37:03I need to get the high parts on the face, low parts under the beard.
- 37:06Yeah.
- 37:07Pulled out that Sterling soap.
- 37:11Mix it up a little bit.
- 37:12I think it's called beard.
- 37:13Froth it up a little.
- 37:14Oh, man.
- 37:14Frothed it up a little bit.
- 37:16Got a clean shave, no ingrown hairs.
- 37:20It was delightful.
- 37:21It is.
- 37:21It's one.
- 37:22It's a great product.
- 37:23And we're drinking some of their coffee right now.
- 37:24We are drinking some of their decaf coffee in the middle of the day right now.
- 37:28And it's splendid as well.
- 37:29I'm actually.
- 37:30This is.
- 37:31I've got enough for one more pot after this.
- 37:34Sounds like you need to get on their schedule.
- 37:38I believe they do schedules.
- 37:39Do they know subscribe and save?
- 37:41Yeah, I'm sure they do.
- 37:42I need to just set it up.
- 37:44But yeah, all their products are outstanding.
- 37:46You can check them out@sterlingsoaps.com that's S D T I R L I N G.
- 37:52Soaps.
- 37:53Soaps or just soap?
- 37:54Just soap dot com.
- 37:55Yeah.
- 37:55All together.
- 37:56Sterlingsoap.com they've got all kinds.
- 38:00All kinds of, like, scents and smells.
- 38:03Amazing stuff for that.
- 38:04Plus their roastery stuff.
- 38:06Coffee stuff's awesome.
- 38:07We love it.
- 38:08Sterlingsoap.com yep.
- 38:09Check them out.
- 38:11So I did want to touch base on one thing, which was Steinbrenner's goodbye.
- 38:17So they said it basically for the middle of August that he had.
- 38:23That he's gonna get.
- 38:24He's gonna leave.
- 38:25I think it's the 15th.
- 38:26I think is when he leaves.
- 38:26Yep.
- 38:2720Th was the 20th.
- 38:28Okay.
- 38:29Yeah, 20th.
- 38:30Okay.
- 38:30So the.
- 38:30On Steinbrenner's final day in power, he brings 100 employees into the Diamond Club for a lunch and tells them we are all still the owners.
- 38:44What do you.
- 38:47What do you think about that?
- 38:49Just above the law mentality, I guess.
- 38:52Kind of just giant ego.
- 38:54Giant whatever.
- 38:56The one of the quotes I had written down that he said was on in that same press conference was, I am here to today to show I am not remorseful.
- 39:04I am not in shock.
- 39:06Yeah.
- 39:06And they asked him, do you think this is a sad day?
- 39:08And he went, nope.
- 39:09Yeah, I think he knew he would still just be controlling everything and that he basically would just pressure in everyone into line and doing what he wanted them to do in the end couple and even if it didn't
- 39:20quite play out that way.
- 39:21Hence.
- 39:22Right.
- 39:22Keeping Jeter, Mariano Pettic, Jorge Posada and what a great.
- 39:29What a great sliding doors.
- 39:31What a great.
- 39:31What if.
- 39:32Just think.
- 39:33I mean all of those guys, trading half those guys.
- 39:36All those guys could have been Texas Rangers.
- 39:38He hated Cincinnati Reds.
- 39:39Yeah, he hates.
- 39:42Who did.
- 39:44I'm just kidding.
- 39:44We didn't.
- 39:45We didn't.
- 39:45Yeah.
- 39:46It was just a kid from Michigan.
- 39:47A couple of side notes to the rest of that day.
- 39:50The end of that day, two hours before that night's game, a fan hung a banner from the upper deck with a great day for the Yankees written on it.
- 39:59Yes.
- 39:59I loved a good unveiling of a banner at a game.
- 40:02Yeah, I kind of want to do that at some point.
- 40:05I feel like though they were all like spray painted like a big white.
- 40:08Sheet and spray painted it by a king size.
- 40:10And now we've got like, now we've got kind of the slop AI signs that they bring to the deal now.
- 40:16What is that?
- 40:17What do you mean?
- 40:18What, what, what did you say?
- 40:20Slop?
- 40:21Slop.
- 40:21AI.
- 40:21Like.
- 40:22Oh, like all those, like all those restaurants, the Flyers, everything looks the same now.
- 40:27It's all that, that, you know, violent paint, you know.
- 40:31Yeah.
- 40:32Can we do this at some point?
- 40:34Derek, can we just pick a moment and we go to a Rangers game.
- 40:38I don't think they let us in with the, the sign.
- 40:40How would they know it?
- 40:42No, we're going to do old school bed sheet.
- 40:44That's what I'm saying.
- 40:44How are you.
- 40:45What are you doing?
- 40:47You putting it in your pant leg?
- 40:48I guess you've got to.
- 40:49What are you saying when they pat me down or what?
- 40:53No, no, I'm saying like what are you saying on the banner?
- 40:55Like, what is so egregious?
- 40:57I don't know.
- 40:57That's what I'm saying.
- 40:58We're going to wait for that moment.
- 40:59With the exception of winning a World Series in 23, I think they're like a 47% win percentage.
- 41:05Yeah.
- 41:05So what do you, what do you just stop being mediocre?
- 41:08No, no, like sell the team far more.
- 41:11How far after all can you say?
- 41:13And the Rangers don't deserve it.
- 41:15We've got the Mavericks has definitely deserved it over the last few years.
- 41:19That was our chance.
- 41:21We should do it still.
- 41:23Yeah.
- 41:23Scott, you printed us.
- 41:25If we can really quickly.
- 41:27Yes.
- 41:28A quick aside, quick aside.
- 41:29I know I'm on like a side 7 now.
- 41:32You printed us up around the time of the Luca trade some Fire Nico shirts.
- 41:36Yes.
- 41:39I decided to wear that shirt the other night after a late night event.
- 41:44Nice.
- 41:45In an area of town that might not have been super excited that I had a Fire Nico shirt on who.
- 41:54Wasn't super excited about firing.
- 41:56I don't know, dude.
- 41:56I know there's some people that were NICO supporters around that time.
- 41:59Okay.
- 42:00Anyway, I just wanted to say if I had gotten stabbed and.
- 42:04Or beaten up because we talked before this podcast about the ability, like at what age can your father no longer take care of themselves physically in terms of a fight?
- 42:14Yeah, I was.
- 42:16I was like, if somebody comes up to me and is physical over this Fire Nico shirt, I'm.
- 42:21I'm probably in a coma right now.
- 42:24We're doing this podcast from a bedroom.
- 42:25I mean from a hospital bed.
- 42:27I just feel too though, like there's 500000 Maverick fans that would then exact vengeance for you.
- 42:35You know what I mean?
- 42:37I also like wearing it in.
- 42:39In Dallas and stuff.
- 42:40Just simply to see if I run into Nico.
- 42:42Yeah.
- 42:43Oh, man.
- 42:43Would he take a picture with me with the shirt?
- 42:46Does he have a sense of humor about it now?
- 42:48I don't think he does.
- 42:48I don't think he does either.
- 42:51Back to Steinbrenner.
- 42:53Mattingly visited his office before he left and called the moment tingly strange.
- 43:00Did you see this Tingly strange?
- 43:03I did, but I know exactly that feeling.
- 43:05Tingly strange.
- 43:06It's a little goose bumpy.
- 43:08A little.
- 43:09I've had it a few now.
- 43:10Mattingly is in a we.
- 43:13I said that a little bit earlier.
- 43:14He is definitely in the throes, just being heard all the time.
- 43:17Yep.
- 43:18Down and just like his prime is definitely behind him.
- 43:22Gene Michael is named the GM on August 20th.
- 43:26Whitey Herzog and Tom Seaver were rumored to be the leading candidates.
- 43:31Can you imagine Tom Seaver as the Yankees gm?
- 43:34No.
- 43:35That's why I wanted to bring this up.
- 43:36And do you think that was real?
- 43:38Like, what would Seaver say?
- 43:40Well, I think, I think.
- 43:41Yeah, I think you think Seavers would.
- 43:43Say, oh, I think I wanted it.
- 43:44I think Seaver would have absolutely taken it.
- 43:46Yeah.
- 43:48Allegedly, Steinbrenner wouldn't be there.
- 43:50Yeah.
- 43:51My grandpa always called him Severs.
- 43:53Well, it's like, what did you just say?
- 43:56Sterling Soaps Yeah, exactly.
- 43:59But one of the great things I've got baseball memorabilia my grandpa gave me is my grandpa was at Seaver's no hitter, which I believe was in 80.
- 44:10I think it was in 1980.
- 44:11I could be.
- 44:12Well, there's another detail that we didn't.
- 44:14Get to research ahead of time still.
- 44:16And he threw more than one.
- 44:18It wasn't anything, you know, whatever, but it has my grandfather.
- 44:24Seaver's no hitter was in 1978.
- 44:2678.
- 44:27You should get Siever to sign it.
- 44:29You think he's kind of dead?
- 44:31Yeah.
- 44:32You.
- 44:33Did you ever.
- 44:33Did you hear Bill Simmons story about like Siever?
- 44:37Like it's like 85, 86.
- 44:39No.
- 44:39And Seaver lived down the block from a friend and Seaver needed somebody just to stand in the box to throw against.
- 44:45And Simmons was like, I mean, this was 40 year old Seaver, however old he was.
- 44:50And Seaver was trying to come back, I guess with the Red Sox at that time.
- 44:54And that he stood in and he was just like, even at 40, that's the most ungodly, like breaking stuff.
- 45:01Like he was just like, I don't know how anybody can, you know, hit this.
- 45:07Michael, who had played shortstop for Steinbrenner in 73, had also already been fired and rehired three times.
- 45:15Yeah.
- 45:15By Steinbrenner, nickname Stick.
- 45:19Steinbrenner said at the time, no one is more knowledgeable in or about the organization.
- 45:25Michael said looking back years later, he knew I saw an opportunity.
- 45:29Yeah.
- 45:32Michael predicted that the team would turn around things within two years.
- 45:35And he was not kind of did wrong much on the.
- 45:39Much on the back of all those young kids not getting traded away for old talent too.
- 45:44Around 7pm Steinbrenner left the stadium on the home plate side and got into a long black Town Car with about a dozen photographers walking backwards in front of him.
- 45:57So he departs, the thing gets built over two or three years.
- 46:01He comes back March of 93, the ban is lifted.
- 46:06Yep.
- 46:06He comes back to the Yankees and they rattle off.
- 46:09He went on ineligible list but stayed majority owner.
- 46:14Yeah.
- 46:14Two and a half years.
- 46:16He was reinstated March 1st.
- 46:20There's a little bit of revisionist history here that a lot of those guys were brought in.
- 46:27A lot of that core were brought in during the ban, which is not true.
- 46:31I think Jeter was the only one that was brought in.
- 46:33Yeah, like 92.
- 46:35Those other guys were brought in a little bit before.
- 46:38It was still in the throes of the investigation.
- 46:40And yeah, the hubbub definitely.
- 46:43But would they have lasted, you know, would they have stayed there?
- 46:47Right, that's, that's obviously the, the, the, the big question.
- 46:54Buck Showalter hired his manager in 92.
- 46:58They trade for Paul O'.
- 46:59Neill.
- 47:00They signed Jimmy Key.
- 47:01There's another Blue Jay that I love.
- 47:02Jimmy Key had like a lights out year for the Yankees when he first got there.
- 47:06Jimmy Key was.
- 47:07I think he was like nails 23.
- 47:09And he's got unbelievable.
- 47:12Back to stratomatic, which we have still not gotten into.
- 47:16No, but Jimmy Key has a year in there where his.
- 47:18What's that?
- 47:19I own it, though.
- 47:20I know.
- 47:20We need to get it out.
- 47:21We should just start playing it on the podcast.
- 47:23Yeah, we should.
- 47:24We should do play by.
- 47:25Play by.
- 47:26Jimmy Key has a wicked.
- 47:28That year is a wicked stratomatic card.
- 47:31I bet.
- 47:32Wicked stratomatic card.
- 47:33Yeah,.
- 47:37There is.
- 47:37When he's brought back, by all accounts, he's a.
- 47:40He's calmer, he's older.
- 47:42It hurt him, I think, being away.
- 47:44I think Hanks talked about that, that it hurt him being away from the game.
- 47:47Sure.
- 47:48So he was.
- 47:49And that there was success on the.
- 47:50On the horizon.
- 47:51I feel like that probably hurt him that it wasn't his doing.
- 47:54It wasn't his doing.
- 47:55Yeah.
- 47:55Which is how Jerry will feel beyond the grave.
- 47:59Yeah.
- 48:00Yankees finished first in 94, the first time since 1981.
- 48:04Then they win titles in 96, 98, 99 and 2000.
- 48:09Some fans to this day joke that Howie Spira deserves a plaque in Monument Park.
- 48:16That was my favorite.
- 48:17That would be awesome.
- 48:18That would be awesome.
- 48:20Can you imagine the years Clemens is there and he comes out and he likes.
- 48:24Kisses his hand and touches the forehead of spirits that are Ruth as he walks by.
- 48:29When we, when we went, the year went.
- 48:33The year that Yankee was going.
- 48:35Last year of Yankee, we went and we made the mistake of not trying to do all we needed to do to get into Monument Park.
- 48:42Like, the thing was done, like within 10 minutes of opening the gate.
- 48:45We thought we had time to kind of mess around, look around, but we had to kind of lean over a fence and look at it.
- 48:52That was one of my regrets.
- 48:55No regrets.
- 48:57There's a lot of people, like I said, that push back on the dynasty was built during the suspension.
- 49:0423 key members of the 96 team who were called up or acquired after Steinbrenner returned include Tino Martinez, Joe Girardi, Dave cone, and John Wetland.
- 49:14And really Cone.
- 49:15Wetland.
- 49:15And who was the first one?
- 49:17Tino.
- 49:17Yeah, Those are all classic Steinbrenner.
- 49:19Grabs.
- 49:20Right.
- 49:20I mean, they kind of are.
- 49:22They filled out that team for sure.
- 49:24You can argue every one of those guys had their better years before that somewhere else.
- 49:28Yeah.
- 49:28Now, again, when you're plugging them in around Jeter, Prada, Bernie Mariano, all that.
- 49:36Winning, I.
- 49:37I'm real curious, too.
- 49:38Had they not finished first in 94 in the east, if they had not finished first, if he would have been a little bit more like, knowing there was some success, knowing that they were getting somewhere, knowing that they
- 49:51were adding around that core.
- 49:53Yeah.
- 49:53I mean, I think the fairest way to frame their dynasty is that the band protected that core.
- 50:01He didn't try to lash, you know, reach out for some false sense of, you know, winning.
- 50:08Exactly.
- 50:09They let the farm system mature.
- 50:11They didn't clean house.
- 50:14And then.
- 50:14And then Steinbrenner was different.
- 50:16He didn't meddle as much, and he just wasn't as insane as he was in the 70s and 80s.
- 50:23Yeah.
- 50:23That maybe all he needed was that Olympic thing.
- 50:26That was, to me, the most bizarre footnote, is that he was like, I have to hold.
- 50:31And granted, I understand when you know that you're defeated and you're about to lose this precious thing, like reaching out for the thing that you think you can hold on to.
- 50:41Yes.
- 50:41Yeah.
- 50:42So, anyway, I find it all fascinating.
- 50:45I felt like we could have done.
- 50:48You watch the up in Smoke podcast?
- 50:51Yes.
- 50:52With Dave Winfield?
- 50:53Yeah.
- 50:53Great.
- 50:53I saw some segments.
- 50:54I didn't see the whole thing.
- 50:55Yeah, it's really good.
- 50:57What was your takeaway from the one?
- 50:58I love those guys.
- 50:59I love what they do.
- 51:00The podcast is awesome.
- 51:03I feel like Winfield is obviously over all of it, you know, and kind of almost has.
- 51:10I feel like when I watch those segments, I'm like, oh, I still think it gets under his skin.
- 51:14Yeah, I'm sure it does all and it always will, but I.
- 51:17And I don't know if it's just because once your nemesis and a thing like that dies, it becomes, like, a bad look for you to continue trying.
- 51:25To drag them through the mud.
- 51:27But it definitely was a sense of like.
- 51:29Because I feel like he also alludes to some of the good times he and George experienced together.
- 51:34Few and far between, but they did happen.
- 51:36And.
- 51:37And I think he also just recognizes Steinbrenner as this giant ego, this guy who really couldn't control himself in certain situations or whatever.
- 51:47And, I mean, again, it's.
- 51:50It's all different now with Steinbrenner having passed.
- 51:53I feel like, you know, and being so far removed 40 over, over 40 years removed from this moment or 30 years removed from this moment helps for sure.
- 52:02Right.
- 52:03Let me ask you this, okay.
- 52:05Two things.
- 52:06One, the Steinbrenner thing though, really fits so well for the New York Yankees.
- 52:13Like what is Steinbrenner's legacy?
- 52:18Like if this is happening because he's the owner of the Angels or the mayor.
- 52:24Well, it's whatever.
- 52:25I mean, without success.
- 52:26He's already Moreno.
- 52:28Yeah, exactly.
- 52:29And the, the other part of it for me though with, with the Yankees is they were always winning.
- 52:36Right.
- 52:37They had success every decade to some degree.
- 52:41The worst of that, I guess being the 80s, I guess even though they were in the World Series in 81.
- 52:48Right.
- 52:49The rest of that decade really fell off.
- 52:51Yeah, but, but, but I say all that was.
- 52:53Winfield was good and he played a lot of.
- 52:56Yeah.
- 52:56I don't want it to make it sound like that whole Steinbrenner selling off young talent for aging stars.
- 53:02Right.
- 53:03I mean, that fit a Yankees mentality of we win now.
- 53:07You know what I mean, and we've got the pocketbooks to do it and all that type of stuff.
- 53:11And then second would be worst owner in baseball history.
- 53:17I don't know.
- 53:18Do you think the Yankees even.
- 53:20He's, he's, well, he's definitely the worst owner in the Yankees history.
- 53:24But do you think.
- 53:25Are we talking about Steinbrenner?
- 53:26Yeah.
- 53:27Right.
- 53:28Well, it depends on what you're like.
- 53:30I mean, he, he does have a lot of.
- 53:32He does, he has a lot of.
- 53:34But I guess what I'm saying is you.
- 53:36It's hard pressed to go back through the Yankees history and find a point where they didn't have banners and all of the heartache, anxiety and chaos.
- 53:44Yeah, but like that's the big game.
- 53:45The worst from 64 to 76.
- 53:49Yeah.
- 53:50They did not win the East.
- 53:52They won more than 89 games just once over that span.
- 53:57Like they were not.
- 53:58I mean, they're coming off, you know, arguably the.
- 54:02One of the greatest runs a franchise has ever had.
- 54:05They're constantly in the World Series.
- 54:07And I guess I know that's putting him as a human.
- 54:10Is the owner.
- 54:11Right.
- 54:12Right.
- 54:14I mean, he did bring just these levels of.
- 54:16I mean, the Yankees were like you just said, celebrating, unfurling king size bed sheets with messages on them when he was gone.
- 54:24You know what I mean?
- 54:26And again, I'm just back here now kind of glancing at some of shots they sign.
- 54:30Well, Winfield in 80.
- 54:32Yeah.
- 54:32They lose in the ALCS to the Royals.
- 54:35Three.
- 54:35Three nil.
- 54:37So that's the best of five.
- 54:38The ALCS was best of five.
- 54:40George Breton, them.
- 54:41That's wild, dude.
- 54:43Was that it?
- 54:45I didn't realize that.
- 54:46I thought the ALCS was the best of seven for a long time.
- 54:48Yeah, that's wild.
- 54:52They literally go to the World Series once they go in 81 and they lose the Dodgers 4 to 2.
- 54:59And then after that, you know, like Winfield's tenure There is a fifth place finish.
- 55:06This is in the Al East.
- 55:08Fifth, third, third, second, second, fourth, fifth, fifth, seventh and 90.
- 55:13When he was traded.
- 55:14Yeah, that was the year everything bottomed out.
- 55:17They go 67 and 95.
- 55:19So like, I mean they won 97 games in 85 and finished second in the East.
- 55:25And there's nothing in there about.
- 55:27I mean, because they didn't win the pennant.
- 55:29So I, I don't.
- 55:31Man, I don't know.
- 55:33Not the worst then.
- 55:34Maybe.
- 55:35I don't know.
- 55:35Again, depends on how you're defining it.
- 55:38Yeah.
- 55:38Success.
- 55:39He's not the worst.
- 55:40Like the win.
- 55:41There's a dark period there after a period, a six or seven year period of really good baseball where they're in contention every year.
- 55:50And then there's a 14 year drought which every, every.
- 55:55I mean the Dodgers had that before.
- 55:57They were due their current.
- 55:59You could argue they were kind of true.
- 56:01They were kind of dude.
- 56:02But also with the.
- 56:02There's no, you know, there's obviously still no salary cap.
- 56:05But the Yankees could spend whatever they wanted to.
- 56:07They were baseball's money machine.
- 56:10They did with Winfield.
- 56:12Like they did kind of land big on that.
- 56:14But anyway, it's, it's.
- 56:17It's fascinating.
- 56:18It is, it is.
- 56:19I think I.
- 56:22I guess just as a person and, and putting that along with the baseball performance, I think he's got to be one of the two or three worst in baseball history in terms of just the chaos that ensues with
- 56:34him and this story alone.
- 56:36Like what he did to try and basically drag one of his own players through the dirt.
- 56:42Well, just ruin his life was really bad.
- 56:45I think Donald Sterling has to be on that Mount Rushmore.
- 56:49I think Art Modell probably should, if.
- 56:54Not just because he ripped compared to those three.
- 56:57Medella down.
- 56:58I know some, definitely some Cleveland Browns fans would.
- 57:01Would push back on that.
- 57:02But you know, moving the team out in the middle of the night never looked good.
- 57:05But shots there.
- 57:07I don't know if you go all the way back in the shot Steinbrenner.
- 57:11And what was the third one?
- 57:16Shot Steinbrenner.
- 57:17Modell.
- 57:19I would bring up, you know, dance can Be thrown in.
- 57:23Sir, if I'm overreacting to Dan Snyder.
- 57:26Snyder.
- 57:27That.
- 57:27The Snyder thing.
- 57:28If you dig into.
- 57:29Yeah.
- 57:29Why he lost the team, it is super toxic.
- 57:32Super gross.
- 57:33I don't know if you would throw Gary Frizzy, the owner of the socks that basically sells Babe Ruth.
- 57:40Yeah.
- 57:41To fund a.
- 57:42Yeah, but, like, part.
- 57:43Of that Snyder thing was, is that they would take the cheerleaders for the calendar shoot and then they would invite, like, the top sponsors to just go out there and watch the shoot.
- 57:56Yes.
- 57:57And, like, I don't know.
- 57:59It was just.
- 58:00This is gross.
- 58:01It was just gross.
- 58:01Like, listen to some of those women talk about what they endured.
- 58:04Like, because they would shoot during the day, some of those shoots would be, like, partially nude, and then they would basically be hostesses that night for parties and just get sexually harassed.
- 58:15Yeah.
- 58:15And they would make 400 a week.
- 58:18It was really.
- 58:19That Snyder thing.
- 58:20Snyder's just.
- 58:21He's gross.
- 58:22There's also the guy.
- 58:23It's a really good 30 for 30.
- 58:25The John Spano guy.
- 58:27Did you ever watch that?
- 58:27Bought the Islanders.
- 58:28But he was just straight up a con man.
- 58:30Right.
- 58:31Just like freaking playing a shell game.
- 58:33Movie money.
- 58:34I just want to know what I can buy.
- 58:35But I kind of think that's fascinating.
- 58:37His story is a little.
- 58:38I want to buy.
- 58:39I think we should.
- 58:40On our list, we should put on the bulletin board, buy an asset, a valuable asset with 2% down.
- 58:47Or actually 1.7% down.
- 58:49It's even worse.
- 58:507%.
- 58:51What can we do, Scott, for 1.7%.
- 58:54Down payment, an asset?
- 58:56Yeah.
- 58:57I mean, nothing.
- 58:59Right.
- 59:00I don't think anything anymore.
- 59:01So do you have to just have a bunch of other investors?
- 59:05I would assume so.
- 59:06I did not.
- 59:07Less than 1.
- 59:07I did not.
- 59:08Because, I mean, it was basically his team.
- 59:10It's like.
- 59:11Like Jerry Jones.
- 59:11It was his team.
- 59:12Yeah.
- 59:13I know that those things have to be financed, and you're.
- 59:16You're basically putting a little money down on the future earnings to pay for.
- 59:21Pay for that loan.
- 59:22But.
- 59:22Yeah.
- 59:22Anyway.
- 59:23So anyway, we got a couple minutes here to wrap up.
- 59:26Yeah.
- 59:27Fascinated by this story.
- 59:28Great choice.
- 59:29Yeah.
- 59:30I think we're World Series.
- 59:35Yeah.
- 59:35And I.
- 59:36Without your permission.
- 59:37Without your permission.
- 59:38You don't have to have.
- 59:39I know.
- 59:39Not your.
- 59:40Without your.
- 59:41Without consulting with you.
- 59:42Okay.
- 59:43I thought you're about to say consent.
- 59:44I was like, we're getting it out there.
- 59:46What?
- 59:47Yeah.
- 59:47Because I was like, derek does all this lifting, and my wife always is just like, why do you make Derek do all the work?
- 59:52Why don't you reach out to people.
- 59:54This is disgusting.
- 59:56All the time knowing that neither one of our spouse's significant others listen to the podcast.
- 1:00:01I can't imagine that actually happened.
- 1:00:03Scott.
- 1:00:04But and, and I haven't heard anything back.
- 1:00:07So I'm not gonna.
- 1:00:07Barry Larkin.
- 1:00:08No.
- 1:00:08It's just a giant A's fan.
- 1:00:11Okay.
- 1:00:12And my thought was maybe they could come on with us for the portion about the Oakland A's because they were they.
- 1:00:18We're doing the A similar.
- 1:00:20And then we're gonna do the Reds and the World.
- 1:00:22And even if, if we want to even break the A's up into kind of a two parter and get our buddy Alan in.
- 1:00:28Sure.
- 1:00:29Because I think he's also got a lot.
- 1:00:30I think Alan would really enjoy the World Series.
- 1:00:33The Reds and the World Series part.
- 1:00:34And we can just make that a big.
- 1:00:37It may end up being 12 episodes.
- 1:00:38I don't know.
- 1:00:39I, I, that probably series was I, I remember very much being locked in because I was a huge A's fan.
- 1:00:47But also when you could see the tide turning, I was like, I really love this Reds team.
- 1:00:52Like, it's hard to deny how talented they are.
- 1:00:55It's hard to deny how good some of these players are.
- 1:00:58So I will say this though.
- 1:01:00I sent them this request yesterday morning.
- 1:01:04It showed up red within probably two hours or whatever.
- 1:01:10I, I looked back and it was red.
- 1:01:12So I don't know at what point but.
- 1:01:14And there was been no response still.
- 1:01:17But that could be because it's kind of like they are a podcast.
- 1:01:21And so I've asked for one of them, specifically the Oakland fan, if they would be interested.
- 1:01:27And just thinking too, maybe, you know, there's an avenue where we could help them out at some point down the road too.
- 1:01:33Okay.
- 1:01:33Either way now I have no idea what's going on.
- 1:01:36We'll see.
- 1:01:36And if not, it's no biggie.
- 1:01:38I love it.
- 1:01:39Well, Steinbrenner, Winfield, Spira.
- 1:01:44Thanks for the championship, Spira.
- 1:01:46Exactly as we're looking at G down the tv.
- 1:01:48Right.
- 1:01:50Anyway, good podcast.
- 1:01:52It's a.
- 1:01:53There was a lot less vulgar than our last podcast.
- 1:01:56It was and it shouldn't have been.
- 1:01:57I feel like there was a ton more opportunity.
- 1:01:59Well, the CD stuff.
- 1:02:00Yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:01Yeah.
- 1:02:02No, I felt like we kept it on the, the straight and narrow last podcast.
- 1:02:05I did have someone listen to it and it was like the one thing was, was just kind of like, so do you guys like not go into that with an end in mind?
- 1:02:16And today we had an end in mind.
- 1:02:18There was actually a little bit of a time.
- 1:02:19Who was that here or whatever said that?
- 1:02:22It was.
- 1:02:22It was our longest podcast.
- 1:02:24It was.
- 1:02:24And there's definitely just, like, 40 minutes of dildo talk.
- 1:02:28Oh, my God, Scott.
- 1:02:29We were keeping this clean.
- 1:02:31All right, we'll see you next time.
- 1:02:33See you guys.
- 1:02:34Thanks.
