- 0:14Welcome, my dear friend, to the new solo episode of Living
- 0:19Without Fear. I'm Esther Berkey, your host
- 0:22from Switzerland, and I'm so grateful you're here, taking
- 0:27this time for yourself to grow, to feel, to breathe and to
- 0:32remember that you are not alone. Today I want to talk about
- 0:38something that still feels a little bit embarrassing for me
- 0:43to share, but that's exactly why I know it needs to be said.
- 0:49Because the moment we find too small or too ridiculous to talk
- 0:56about are often the ones that carry the biggest truth.
- 1:03It happened last Saturday, my favorite day of the week.
- 1:09At 8:00 in the morning, I was in the swimming hall with my
- 1:13swimming club. We trained for two hours and as
- 1:18always, afterward we met upstairs in the coffee on the
- 1:23second floor. We sat around a big long table
- 1:29drinking coffee. Someone had brought cake.
- 1:33Usually this is one of the highlights of my week, being
- 1:38together, laughing, connecting after the swim.
- 1:44But this Saturday was different. I had just come back from Egypt
- 1:50after two intense weeks with my two sons.
- 1:55The vacation was wonderful, but I was tired and exhausted from
- 2:01the long training with not much sleep.
- 2:05My body felt heavy, my mind slow.
- 2:10I came to the table together with another woman, and somehow
- 2:16I ended up at the very end of the table.
- 2:20And then it started, this quiet, painful story in my head.
- 2:28I looked around, saw the others chatting and felt like I didn't
- 2:34belong. I thought, they are not talking
- 2:39to me because I missed the competition last week.
- 2:43They've all been together and I'm no longer part of it.
- 2:50A woman I had shared a room with during our swim track in Turkey
- 2:56was sitting opposite me, talking animatedly with someone else,
- 3:03and she didn't look at me once. And instead of just accepting
- 3:09that maybe she was tired too, or caught in her own flow, I
- 3:16started to shrink inside. I felt wrong, unwanted, not
- 3:23interesting enough. And then came that old voice in
- 3:28my head, the one that says you should do something, you should
- 3:34talk, you should connect, you're being weird, you're not lovable
- 3:41if no one talks to you. It sounds ridiculous now,
- 3:46doesn't it? Such a small or ordinary scene,
- 3:52sitting around the table with people after swimming.
- 3:56And yet it hits me so deeply because in that moment I judged
- 4:04myself. I didn't allow myself to just
- 4:09be. And The funny thing is, I
- 4:14suddenly realized I've often done the same to others.
- 4:20There were times when I was the one deeply engaged in a
- 4:24conversation and didn't even notice the person sitting
- 4:29quietly beside me. So in a strange way, I felt
- 4:35punished by my own behaviour, like life was showing me how it
- 4:42feels to be unseen. I wanted to get out of that
- 4:47feeling so badly. When the conversation round me
- 4:52finally opened a little, I joined in.
- 4:56But still it felt forced. My ego whispered, you're not
- 5:02good enough, you're not leading the conversation.
- 5:07You are not the one others listen to.
- 5:12And that's when I felt most ridiculous, realizing how much I
- 5:18still want to matter, to be seen, to feel part of something.
- 5:25Afterward, I biked home, called a friend just to feel connection
- 5:31again, and it helped. But I also knew I needed to look
- 5:37deeper. Because I think we all have
- 5:42these moments, don't we? Moments when no one talks to us,
- 5:48when we feel invisible, when we look around and see others
- 5:54laughing, connecting, and wonder what's wrong with us, We start
- 6:01building stories in our minds about being unwanted, too quiet,
- 6:07too boring, too different. And the longer we sit in
- 6:13silence, the louder these stories become.
- 6:18But here's what I've come to understand.
- 6:22Those stories are not the truth. They're just old fears returning
- 6:29fears of rejection. Fears of not being enough, fears
- 6:35we learned long ago when love felt conditional.
- 6:41So what can we do in such moments?
- 6:46How can we navigate them with grace instead of collapsing into
- 6:52self judgement? First, give yourself permission
- 6:58to to be tired. You don't owe anyone your
- 7:02energy. Sometimes your body and your
- 7:06soul simply need rest and silence.
- 7:10You're not strange for that, you're human.
- 7:15Second, don't believe the first story your mind tells.
- 7:21The story They don't like me or I don't belong is really true.
- 7:29Often people are simply caught up in their own world or just as
- 7:35insecure as you are. Third, what's your inner
- 7:41dialogue? When your mind says you're doing
- 7:46something wrong, try to gently answer no.
- 7:52I'm just being me. That simple act of compassion
- 7:57changes everything. 4th Include others when you can.
- 8:04If you notice someone else sitting quietly, look at them.
- 8:10Smile or ask something small. Sometimes the connection you're
- 8:16longing for begins with you giving what you crave. 5th and
- 8:25maybe most important, don't shame yourself for wanting
- 8:30connection. It's not weakness, it's what
- 8:35makes us human. Wanting to belong doesn't make
- 8:39you needy, it makes you alive. And maybe there's also a
- 8:46beautiful invitation hidden inside this uncomfortable
- 8:51moments. They invite us to meet ourselves
- 8:57without distraction, without validation.
- 9:02They teach us to sit with our own presence and realize even
- 9:09when no one looks at me, I'm still here, still enough, still
- 9:16home. Being true to ourselves doesn't
- 9:21mean we always feel confident or radiant.
- 9:26Sometimes being true means admitting I feel lonely right
- 9:32now. I wish someone would talk to me.
- 9:37And not judging ourselves for that.
- 9:41That's where the healing begins, when we can sit with our
- 9:47discomfort and still whisper to ourselves, it's OK, I still love
- 9:54you, you're doing fine. So next time you find yourself
- 10:01at that big table, or in any situation where connection seems
- 10:07out of reach, remember you don't have to prove your worth by
- 10:13speaking, smiling or performing. Your presence is enough.
- 10:20Even in silence. You belong.
- 10:23And before I go today, I want to tell you something from my
- 10:29heart. Many of you have been listening
- 10:33to me for a long time, following my stories, my reflections, my
- 10:40journey with fear and with learning to live true to myself.
- 10:46And maybe something in you is ready to shift to.
- 10:52If you feel stuck, if you feel trapped in the same pattern of
- 10:57fear, self doubt or people pleasing, I'd love to help you.
- 11:03This is why I offer one-on-one coaching sessions where we can
- 11:09talk openly about whatever holds you back.
- 11:14You can free yourself by talking about things you never dare to
- 11:20talk about before in a safe space, without judgement, just
- 11:27honesty and love. You'll find the link in the bio

- 12:33You are never alone and remember your worth doesn't depend on how
- 12:40others see you, but on how softly you can see yourself.
