- 0:28Hello everybody. Hey, how are you my
- 0:30friends and welcome to another edition
- 0:32of our heartto-he heart podcast. We are
- 0:35here celebrating the game that is
- 0:38sweeping the nation right now. I have ma
- 0:41fever and just like I told you all I was
- 0:44going to bring it to Miami. Well, there
- 0:45was no need for me to bring it to Miami
- 0:47because we have Miami's very own Maang
- 0:49Sherpa Broo Lamb in the house today to
- 0:52talk to us all about this love of the
- 0:54game. Hi Brooke.
- 0:56>> Hi Christie.
- 0:57>> Thank you so much for being here today.
- 0:59Thank you for having me
- 1:00>> and spreading the word.
- 1:02>> Yes, I love that you love ma jang.
- 1:04>> I love ma jang so much. I learned how to
- 1:06play this summer and I promised that I
- 1:09was going to bring it to Miami. Lo and
- 1:11behold, it was already here. I had no
- 1:14idea that the beginning of ma jang also
- 1:16had ties to Miami. So, I am so excited
- 1:19for you to get into everything. But
- 1:21before we do, I want to hear all about
- 1:23how you became a ma instructor and
- 1:26please introduce yourself. Okay. Well,
- 1:28my name is Broo Lamb. I have a very
- 1:32varied past in terms of things that I've
- 1:34done, various businesses. I'm born and
- 1:37raised in Miami, so I've been here
- 1:39forever. And ma jang to me kind of
- 1:42encapsulated everything that I've done
- 1:44in a very strange way to most people
- 1:47because they think of it literally as a
- 1:49game. Um, however, I have a past history
- 1:53in I'm an attorney. call myself a
- 1:56recovering attorney. Um, I have had
- 2:00different types of businesses from store
- 2:02boutiques to things with wellness and
- 2:05I've had an education company for the
- 2:08past 15 plus years of tutoring middle
- 2:11school and high school students. So,
- 2:13this actually originated this idea a
- 2:16little over a year ago. I was playing ma
- 2:18jang with a couple of my friends or
- 2:20three of my friends and I was talking to
- 2:23them about some business coaching that I
- 2:25was doing for women. I was trying to
- 2:28teach how you can have a passion-based
- 2:31business that regardless of how many
- 2:33degrees or certifications you have that
- 2:36something you love, something you have a
- 2:38passion about is really what you can
- 2:40turn any business into and how to create
- 2:44that. And while doing it, I was using ma
- 2:47jang as an example. And while we were
- 2:50talking about it, I was like, you know
- 2:51what? I think I'm gonna start this
- 2:54business. So, I was kind of originally
- 2:56using it as a test case on showing
- 2:58people how you can make really anything
- 3:00you love into a business. And I happened
- 3:03to do it at a time where it now
- 3:07has it has been having its moment. Um,
- 3:10it would, you know, like I said, it was
- 3:11a little over a year ago. So, I was kind
- 3:12of on the cusp of that. And so it's been
- 3:14really cool and exciting to see how it's
- 3:17taking off and how much people are
- 3:18enjoying it because I've been playing it
- 3:20myself for like 10 years now. I feel
- 3:22like so
- 3:24>> well I learned how to play this summer
- 3:27in Colorado with a local Texan and Texas
- 3:31is all the rage on the game and they are
- 3:34playing it in every corner, every city,
- 3:37every county. Um she taught me how to
- 3:40play. She told me it's not so much about
- 3:42the game, but it's about your gorgeous
- 3:44table. And you have brought some
- 3:46beautiful pieces here today. And one
- 3:48thing that I love about this game is the
- 3:51beauty that you are enjoying. Like it's
- 3:54not just a tile. Every tile you
- 3:57encounter is just gorgeous. And it's got
- 3:59its own story, its own theme, and it's
- 4:03it's just so beautiful. It's a beautiful
- 4:04landscape to play. And it also I think
- 4:06it relaxes you and it makes it just that
- 4:09more special to play. So, I want to get
- 4:12all into it right now. Um, I know that
- 4:16you are a sherpa. You are an instructor
- 4:18and a teacher. I am so um hesitant to
- 4:24show my friends about it because they
- 4:25find it so intimidating. But really,
- 4:27once you start playing, it's not that
- 4:29hard. It's everything has a learning
- 4:31curve, but it's easier than it looks.
- 4:34So, I was hoping that you could start by
- 4:36showing everybody just a very easy,
- 4:39rudimentary beginner class to show them
- 4:42that it's not as intimidating as
- 4:44intimidating as it looks. For sure, I
- 4:47can definitely go into the tiles. I
- 4:48think everybody walks in at the
- 4:50beginning and thinks that it seems very
- 4:52very complicated. And I think the
- 4:54overwhelm at first comes from just an
- 4:56immense amount of rules that really were
- 4:59very much instituted
- 5:01if you really go back to them because
- 5:03people were cheating. So every single
- 5:06rule kind of keeps that from happening
- 5:08and keeps the game fair. And you know, I
- 5:11know we're going to talk a lot about
- 5:13friendship and things like that, but I
- 5:14think in some ways the rules are just to
- 5:16keep the game friendly. Of course, it's
- 5:19different how you how you carry out
- 5:21those rules and how you talk about the
- 5:22rules, right? But it's to make it that
- 5:25there's no question of what's right and
- 5:27wrong. You just play by the rules and
- 5:29it's not like, well, how come she got
- 5:31away with it and I'm not? How you like
- 5:33her more? It's all just about
- 5:36being
- 5:37friendly, right? So, the that's really
- 5:40behind the rules. And I think a lot of
- 5:41people are intimidated by that,
- 5:43>> rightfully so. It's a lot at first, but
- 5:45it's like anything else in life. you
- 5:46practice it and then you know it becomes
- 5:49much easier. But we can definitely talk
- 5:51about the tiles. So tiles and the card
- 5:54because I think the card is just as
- 5:56important because that is the rule maker
- 5:59kind of right.
- 6:00>> Yes. Um can you talk about how you find
- 6:03out where you go get your rules where
- 6:06you get the card? The card is a very
- 6:08important aspect and I know you and I
- 6:09have spoken about it. I've actually
- 6:11heard people that say, "I wasn't invited
- 6:13to a game because I didn't bring my
- 6:15card." So, talk about the card.
- 6:17>> So, before we get into the tie,
- 6:19>> sure. The card is an absolute necessity
- 6:22for the game because it's basically what
- 6:25standardizes the game. It's what makes
- 6:27American ma jang or one of the things
- 6:29that makes it American ma jang because
- 6:32you know we can go back and talk about
- 6:34history but the game originated as
- 6:37Chinese maong which is a different game
- 6:39than American ma jang. So when it came
- 6:41over to America and started morphing
- 6:44into American maong it was the early
- 6:461930s when this national ma jang league
- 6:49was created with the intent of
- 6:51standardizing the game. So
- 6:54basically the way that the card is is it
- 6:57shows you every single year what hands
- 7:00you can play to win, right? So if you're
- 7:03playing a card that's different from
- 7:05everybody else, you're playing different
- 7:08hands. You're playing with a totally
- 7:10different mindset and it would take away
- 7:12a lot of the strategy of the game
- 7:13because once you learn how to play, then
- 7:15you want to start being a defensive
- 7:17player. Sure. So, you have to be playing
- 7:18off the same card to be trying to figure
- 7:20out what other people are playing,
- 7:22>> right?
- 7:22>> One of the coolest things about the card
- 7:24in my opinion is that it changes every
- 7:26year. So, no matter how long you're
- 7:29playing this game, every year there's
- 7:31something new to look forward to, a new
- 7:33challenge. It keeps it fresh. But, you
- 7:37do need the card because it has with all
- 7:39of its variations probably about a
- 7:41thousand different ways that you can win
- 7:43and play. So that's why it's
- 7:44overwhelming
- 7:46because when you first look at it, it's
- 7:48like a jumble of numbers and letters and
- 7:50colors and you have to learn how to read
- 7:53the card, right? Start the new year with
- 7:56heart and incredible flavor. Head to the
- 7:58Heartful Living website to secure your
- 8:00$39 bottle of freshed olive oil from the
- 8:03olive oil hunter. If you're willing to
- 8:05pay just $1 to help cover shipping, this
- 8:07exclusive offer is yours. Fresh flavor,
- 8:10fresh year, fresh start. Let's pour more
- 8:13goodness into our days, one drizzle at a
- 8:15time. So, number one, get yourself a
- 8:19Maong card.
- 8:20>> Yes.
- 8:21>> And you have to get the official card.
- 8:23And I found out that the only way to get
- 8:25the official card is through the
- 8:28National Maang League website because a
- 8:30lot of people sell fakes. This is true.
- 8:33Yes. The National Ma Maang League
- 8:35website, which is national
- 8:37majangleague.org,
- 8:39they sell their cards. Okay. I tell
- 8:41people January, you go on the website
- 8:43and you order your card for the year.
- 8:45They usually don't come out until about
- 8:47March. It's like a big
- 8:49>> reveal when everybody gets their new
- 8:50card, but there's a ton of copies that
- 8:53are on Amazon and other places. And I've
- 8:56seen I I was teaching somebody the other
- 8:57day and one of the hands that they were
- 8:59playing was wrong. It was wrong on the
- 9:01card. It had an extra number somewhere.
- 9:04So, if they had called Maong, they're
- 9:06they would not have won because they
- 9:07were playing with the wrong card. So,
- 9:11I love I love Amazon, right? Um, you
- 9:14know, but for Maong cards, it's better
- 9:16to go to the National Maong League.
- 9:19They're the ones that actually put them
- 9:20out. And for our purposes in my company,
- 9:24in our events, we always bring cards
- 9:27that are always there for new players.
- 9:28They're that they can use until they get
- 9:30their card. But yes, in order to
- 9:32practice, in order to play outside with
- 9:34your friends, you have to have the card.
- 9:35The card is $15 and it you become a
- 9:38member of the National Maang Leave when
- 9:40you get the card and it always comes out
- 9:43on Lunar New Year.
- 9:44>> Yes.
- 9:45>> Which I think is just a fun tidbit.
- 9:47>> Okay, so we've got the card. That's the
- 9:50first part of the game. The other part
- 9:52of the game that you need are the tiles.
- 9:53>> Yes.
- 9:54>> Now, let's talk about tiles. Okay. So,
- 9:57similarly to a deck of cards, all of our
- 10:01numbered tiles in the game are
- 10:03categorized by suits. So, we have three
- 10:06main suits. So, all of our numbered
- 10:10tiles are categorized in suits similarly
- 10:12to a deck of cards except in maong we
- 10:15have three main suits. So, the first
- 10:19suit that we're going to talk about are
- 10:21called our cracks. C R A K. It's
- 10:25actually short for character because on
- 10:27any single set, you're going to see some
- 10:30type of Asian characters on the tiles
- 10:33for cracks. They will look different on
- 10:36different sets. There are so many modern
- 10:38beautiful types of sets that are out
- 10:40now. Some of them, like the one I'm
- 10:42showing here today, are they tend to be
- 10:44a little bit more traditional, but are
- 10:46more modernized in some of the graphics
- 10:48and the colors. And then there's some
- 10:51sets out now that are very, very theme
- 10:53themy. So, oh, I love them.
- 10:56>> Me, too. And I I actually I talk about
- 10:59one of my themy ones, which is the
- 11:00Taylor Swift set
- 11:03when I'm explaining things about the
- 11:04tiles because it's it shows you how no
- 11:07matter what you're playing on, you can
- 11:09look for certain things to tell which
- 11:10tile you're looking at. So, if we look
- 11:13at cracks again, they're always going to
- 11:14have the different type of symbol on
- 11:16them, the character, which actually
- 11:18signifies the number itself. So, our
- 11:21numbered tiles in the crack suit are
- 11:23numbered 1 through nine. And we always
- 11:25have four
- 11:27identical tiles.
- 11:29And in each suit, we have a dragon. So,
- 11:33in the crack suit, we have what's called
- 11:35the red dragon.
- 11:38That's our first suit. Then, we have our
- 11:42dots.
- 11:45Our
- 11:47dot suit will typically always be
- 11:49circular, so you can see different dots,
- 11:52different circles. Um, going back to
- 11:54Taylor Swift, they use disco balls,
- 11:56right? Circular things that you can see
- 11:59to show that they're dots. I've had sets
- 12:02that there's like a New York City set,
- 12:04which I love, and they use apples for
- 12:06the dots. So, you're always kind of
- 12:08looking for that type of um of a graphic
- 12:10to know what your dots are. And again,
- 12:12these are 1 through nine. You have four
- 12:15identical tiles. And then the dragon
- 12:16that goes with the dots is actually
- 12:18called the soap, just like a bar of
- 12:21soap. And it will typically look
- 12:22bar-like. And I always say to kind of
- 12:25remember that they go together like soap
- 12:27and bubbles,
- 12:28but you don't want to call it a one
- 12:31bubble or a two bubble, which has
- 12:32happened before in some of my lessons.
- 12:34They are dots, but it helps remember
- 12:35that the soap goes with them. And then
- 12:38our third suit is called our BAM. And
- 12:41BAM is short for bamboo. So, you'll
- 12:44typically see something that's more
- 12:46long, plantlike, bamboo, like um if we
- 12:51look back at Taylor Swift and her in her
- 12:53set, they look like guitars. So, they
- 12:56have like that long type of a elongated
- 12:59graphic to know that it's BAM. So,
- 13:02again, one through nine. And then we
- 13:03have our dragon for our bams are is our
- 13:07green dragon. So, thinking of green to
- 13:09remember like plants.
- 13:12And then that closes out our suits in
- 13:15terms of our number tiles. Then we have
- 13:17a few different types of tiles. We have
- 13:19another category that's known as our
- 13:21winds. The winds are directional type
- 13:24tiles. We have north, east, west, and
- 13:26south. These are an example of some of
- 13:28them.
- 13:29>> Beautiful.
- 13:30>> And they just have like the N's, the E,
- 13:32the W's, or the S. They're
- 13:35known a lot in Mage as the news tiles.
- 13:39And then our final tiles, we have two
- 13:43different types. We have our flowers. So
- 13:46flowers look very different on different
- 13:48sets. Flowers don't even necessarily
- 13:50look like each other. They're usually
- 13:52similar, but they're often different
- 13:53colors. They are the same. Flowers or
- 13:56flowers are equal to each other in terms
- 13:58of, you know, a value of what they are.
- 14:00Some of the more traditional sets,
- 14:02especially the originals, did have or do
- 14:05have numbers on the flowers. Some of
- 14:07them have seasons written on the
- 14:09flowers. If you have a set like that,
- 14:11you ignore the numbers in the seasons
- 14:13when you're playing American Maong. And
- 14:15these are special tiles that we have
- 14:16eight of. And then our final tiles,
- 14:19which is also unique to American Maong,
- 14:21are our jokers, which we also have eight
- 14:23of. The tile that everybody wants to
- 14:26get.
- 14:28And that's it. Brooke, I just noticed
- 14:30that you didn't show any blanks.
- 14:32>> I did not show any blanks.
- 14:34>> Why? So, I actually have a strong but
- 14:37friendly opinion about blanks. Tell me.
- 14:39So, in your sets, you will get tiles
- 14:42that are blank. They are there to be
- 14:45replacement tiles. If you lose
- 14:47something, you can use it as a
- 14:48replacement for whatever you lose of
- 14:50your sets. Especially these sets,
- 14:52they're can be pricey, so you don't want
- 14:54to have to start over. A lot of people
- 14:56have incorporated blanks into their
- 14:59game, especially in certain locations.
- 15:01Um
- 15:03there are something when you when you're
- 15:04playing ma jang there's something called
- 15:06the national ma jang league rules and
- 15:08there's something called table rules or
- 15:09house rules right so if you're at your
- 15:12table of your friends and your four
- 15:14people you can play however you want and
- 15:17usually if you go to a game at
- 15:19somebody's home like you want to ask
- 15:20them what are your table rules if you're
- 15:22joining their game to know how they
- 15:24might play something differently
- 15:27some people like to play with blanks I
- 15:29do
- 15:31ah
- 15:31People like to play the blanks because
- 15:33it makes the game easier, right? Yeah.
- 15:35So, National Ma Jang League rules do not
- 15:37use blanks. It's not part of the game.
- 15:40Um, you can't use them in any kind of
- 15:41National Maong League rule activity,
- 15:44tournaments, anything like that. The way
- 15:47I see it, and I can understand why
- 15:49people like playing because the game's
- 15:51complicated at first. So, right. Um, but
- 15:54it's like anything else in life that you
- 15:56know, you think about what you're doing
- 15:58and something that you have a crutch for
- 16:00or that you're bending the rules for, it
- 16:02takes away some of the value of the
- 16:05game. When we talk about strategy and
- 16:07the brain health and all these types of
- 16:09things of part of why people are playing
- 16:11maong, making it easier takes away a lot
- 16:16and it does take a lot of the strategy
- 16:18out of the game. So that's why I don't
- 16:20teach with blanks because I like people
- 16:22to see everything up front. They see the
- 16:24rules. They know how to play correctly
- 16:25and because it's a standardized game in
- 16:28terms of any of our events, the league,
- 16:30we just play by national ma jang league
- 16:32rules. So
- 16:34>> is the joker in play?
- 16:35>> A joker is definitely in play.
- 16:38>> Yes. No.
- 16:38>> But eight jokers. So also when you buy a
- 16:41new set, many of them come with 10. Same
- 16:44reason though, it's there to be extra in
- 16:47terms of American majong. you're not
- 16:49supposed to play with 10. I know that
- 16:51there's some games that they're like,
- 16:53"Let's throw in the extra jokers,
- 16:54right?" Cuz it makes it easier.
- 16:56Everybody loves the Joker. New year, new
- 16:59glow with Harbon House. Harbin House is
- 17:01an authorized retailer of the best
- 17:03scientific skincare and clean beauty
- 17:05products. They are proud to be a small
- 17:07business that offers better service and
- 17:09faster processing than the big box
- 17:10stores, you know. They are also proud
- 17:12partners of Heartful Living. Enjoy 20%
- 17:15off your Harbin House favorites with
- 17:16code heartful 20. Treat your skin to the
- 17:19quality it deserves as we step into a
- 17:21fresh new year.
- 17:22>> Well, and I say if you're starting too,
- 17:24I think having a blank and a choker in
- 17:27your beginner hands really helps you
- 17:30just get more familiar with your
- 17:32patterns in your card.
- 17:33>> Right.
- 17:34>> Also, I think that I can see putting in
- 17:37extra jokers. The blanks change the game
- 17:40though because of, you know, things with
- 17:43calling, things with being able to go
- 17:45back, missing the card. very much the
- 17:47strategy especially with singles and
- 17:49pairs and things like that. So I'm kind
- 17:52of a stickler about the blanks to know
- 17:55when we play with Brooke as blanks are
- 17:57not her favorite.
- 17:58>> Yes, play with blanks you know but
- 18:01there's there's other ways to practice
- 18:02not in the yard also not at my house not
- 18:04at my table. So what's the purpose of
- 18:07maong?
- 18:09>> So I mean the purpose of ma jang to me
- 18:11may be the purpose to other people. I
- 18:13mean it's a it's a game like anything
- 18:15else right? But it is so rich in
- 18:18tradition. It's so rich in history,
- 18:20right? So you see like why has it lasted
- 18:22so long? Why has it morphed so much? Why
- 18:25is it taking off so much? To me, there's
- 18:28parallels to life. There's life lessons.
- 18:30It's amazing for your brain. It's
- 18:32amazing for your mental health. It's
- 18:34amazing for connection. Um I I really
- 18:38started this because I felt that when I
- 18:41left Amage Table with friends, Yes. I
- 18:44felt physically different. I felt
- 18:46mentally different. And I think that,
- 18:49you know, I originally started this
- 18:50called the Maj Mom Club because I felt
- 18:53like moms
- 18:56were screaming with a need, especially I
- 18:59think postco of this everybody coming
- 19:02back full force and getting so busy and
- 19:05there's so much talk now about mental
- 19:07load and everything that goes on that
- 19:09the mage table is like the ultimate
- 19:13wellness hack to me.
- 19:14>> I love that.
- 19:15>> And we talk about this. Yes.
- 19:17>> It slows life down.
- 19:18>> Yes. It's It slows life down. It's
- 19:22connection with your friends. It's
- 19:24connection with new people. I've met so
- 19:26many new people through Maj. And one of
- 19:29the most interesting things is a lot of
- 19:31them might be people that I probably
- 19:33wouldn't either come in contact with or
- 19:35maybe wouldn't even have a lot in common
- 19:37with to talk about or to have a
- 19:40connection with. But we can all sit down
- 19:41at the majong table and play and really
- 19:44enjoy each other's company for two hours
- 19:46because we're focused on something else.
- 19:49I think so many female relationships
- 19:54have for years revolved around, you
- 19:57know, going out socializing. Let's go
- 19:59get a drink or let's eat or what. And we
- 20:01bring that to the M table now. You're
- 20:02welcome to if you want, but it gives
- 20:04something else. It's something else to
- 20:06focus on other than, you know,
- 20:10everything else that goes on in life.
- 20:11And it c it forces you to take this
- 20:13mental break from the constant spinning
- 20:17of everything that's going on, the to-do
- 20:19list, the things that you, you know, you
- 20:21have to do, and it forces you to focus.
- 20:23And one of my favorite things about it
- 20:25is it doesn't involve screens,
- 20:29right? You know, it's funny. I before we
- 20:32go back cuz I want to go back and just
- 20:35circle back to how that connected with
- 20:37how this all started. But uh about the
- 20:39screens, a lot of people say, "Yeah, I
- 20:41play ma jang on apps. It has nothing to
- 20:43do with the game." I'm like, they're
- 20:45like, "Is it just like the app?" I go,
- 20:46"Yeah, but no, not at all." Like, so
- 20:50there's some apps that people think
- 20:52they're playing this game on that are
- 20:53more like a matching type of a game
- 20:55that,
- 20:55>> right? And then there's and then they
- 20:57come in, they're like, "Oh, this is not
- 20:58what I thought it was." or oh, I told my
- 21:00husband I was coming for a lesson and
- 21:02he's like why? You know, it's a matching
- 21:04game. So, there's that, which is nothing
- 21:07with this game. And then there are some
- 21:10websites um that I think are really
- 21:12helpful for practice when you're first
- 21:15learning to keep that repetitive uhness
- 21:18going to practice rules, to practice
- 21:20hands, and to practice playing because
- 21:22you can't always sit down with four
- 21:24people and and play. Um, if you do own a
- 21:27set, there's ways you can practice as
- 21:29well, but you know, that's more of a
- 21:32it's more of to do to help or to
- 21:35practice or in the meantime you're
- 21:36traveling, whatever it is, right?
- 21:37Instead of the the regular game itself,
- 21:41>> right? So I want to circle back because
- 21:44you mentioned that you know this brings
- 21:46everybody to the table together to um
- 21:50compart is the Spanish word to partake
- 21:53sorry to partake in something that
- 21:55everybody knows how to play and that's
- 21:56actually how maong came to Miami is it
- 21:59not
- 22:00>> yes you know the the origin story the
- 22:04national maong league that was created
- 22:06in you know the early 1930s there was a
- 22:09group of five Jewish women that decided
- 22:11we need to standardize this game. And a
- 22:13lot of it was because of this travel
- 22:16between New York and South Florida and
- 22:20being able to no matter where you were
- 22:22play with the same rules, the same
- 22:25hands, the same intention. So, you know,
- 22:28from the very beginning, it was about
- 22:31trying to bring more people to the
- 22:33table, be connected, have, you know, be
- 22:36level playing field type of a situation.
- 22:39So, there you have it. Miami was
- 22:40involved from day one.
- 22:42>> It was involved from day one. And that's
- 22:44that's been an interesting kind of thing
- 22:46with bringing Maj to Miami. An
- 22:48interesting challenge even because
- 22:51there's a lot of people that that know
- 22:53how to play Maong here.
- 22:55>> A lot of traditional players. I mean,
- 22:58I've played for 10 years. I found very
- 23:01few people that I knew that were my age
- 23:03when I learned that knew how to play.
- 23:06But there's a stigma with the game of
- 23:08the grandma game. Right. Right. So that
- 23:12came because of this trip this back and
- 23:15forth in New York, Miami and roots in
- 23:17South Florida of how the game originated
- 23:20and it was very much a kitchen tables
- 23:22and sitting at night in houses and you
- 23:24know some people would say they remember
- 23:26hearing the clinking of the tiles and
- 23:28the chirping of the tiles, but
- 23:30>> bringing it now to new people and you
- 23:32mentioned Texas and how it's kind of
- 23:36>> evolved there. It's it's taken on a new
- 23:38life. And so now it's kind of
- 23:40introducing people who have this
- 23:42long-standing history to the game with
- 23:44some of these other ways of integrating
- 23:47social events and coming out and leagues
- 23:50and things like that that they're not
- 23:51used to the associating with the game.
- 23:53>> Sure.
- 23:54>> So it's a it's been an it's been a
- 23:55different challenge in a way.
- 23:57>> Of course. it, you know, speak no
- 24:00further because Brooke along with her
- 24:02friend Gabby, the Tile Society, is
- 24:06launching a Miami Maj League thing.
- 24:08>> We are. We are. Yes. Gabby is another
- 24:12Majang instructor in Miami and we
- 24:15co-launched it's called Maj and Miami.
- 24:18So, Maja and Miami is focused on
- 24:22bringing Maj social events around Miami.
- 24:25So we partner with different
- 24:27restaurants, different stores, different
- 24:30locations, like any we can do our stuff
- 24:32anywhere. Anybody that wants to partake
- 24:35and bring people into their space and we
- 24:38do different types of group events. So
- 24:40we've done different types of theme
- 24:42parties like we were planning a
- 24:44Halloween party for Mage and things like
- 24:47that and holiday parties and then also
- 24:50the league. So the league is something
- 24:52that's it's just supposed to add like a
- 24:55new dimension to ma jang right a lot of
- 24:57people like to get together they play
- 24:59with their friends or it's more casual
- 25:01this is a friendly and I've emphasized
- 25:04friendly about that now
- 25:07>> friendly way to open up eyes to more of
- 25:11the competitive aspect of the game in
- 25:15terms of scoring and how defensive play
- 25:18kind of comes very much into the game
- 25:20and almost changes it a little bit when
- 25:21your sole focus isn't just winning maj
- 25:24first. Sometimes you're sacrificing your
- 25:26hand to keep somebody else from winning
- 25:28Maj when you're dealing with scoring and
- 25:30we do prizes and it's supposed to help
- 25:32people set dates on their calendar that
- 25:36they know that they're coming to play. U
- 25:38they can meet new friends, they can
- 25:40bring their friends. It's, you know, you
- 25:42don't have to worry about cleaning your
- 25:44house, having somebody taking care of
- 25:45your kids, having your husband leaving,
- 25:47you know, to go somewhere else, putting
- 25:49out food for everyone, cleaning up
- 25:51after, right? You show up, we set up all
- 25:52the tables. And it's been a really fun
- 25:56experience so far, and a lot of people
- 25:58have met new people, and we hope that it
- 26:01will grow and that more people will will
- 26:03join us over time. Well, I'm in. I've
- 26:06slowly been teaching my friends and kind
- 26:09of indoctrinating and brainwashing, if
- 26:11you will, for them to join me at the
- 26:12league. But you don't need any friends
- 26:13to go to your league. You do not need
- 26:15any friends. That's one of the
- 26:17advantages is that you can come, you
- 26:19place the tables. Our league by design
- 26:22has different people playing with
- 26:24everybody that's there so that it's more
- 26:26fair in terms of the scoring, right?
- 26:28>> Um, obviously you're welcome to come
- 26:30with your friends. We let everybody
- 26:31request one friend at a table at a time
- 26:34for the league. We do have other types
- 26:36of events where you can come as a table
- 26:37of four if you want or you can come by
- 26:40yourself if you want and we make the
- 26:41tables. So it's, you know, very adaptive
- 26:44in that way. We know some people like to
- 26:46play with their game but they want to
- 26:47get out and some people want to be with
- 26:49new people. So that's great. I am so
- 26:52excited. And I just want to touch up on
- 26:54the fact that you mentioned it's
- 26:56friendly because I had an experience a
- 26:59lot of the Heartful Living community
- 27:01knows with a woman named Linda in Brian
- 27:04Park in New York. And I was just trying
- 27:07to spread the love of the game with a
- 27:10friend, my friend Megan, who had never
- 27:12played before. We heard that all
- 27:13beginners were welcome to go to Brian
- 27:15Park one day and it was just an open
- 27:17play session. and she didn't know how to
- 27:19play. So, I kind of decided to just sit
- 27:21behind and kind of show her how to play
- 27:24just so that I could, you know, give her
- 27:28the love of Maj that I had. And we got
- 27:31thrown out. And it really put a damper,
- 27:34I think, on Megan's future play because
- 27:37they had told her, "You don't know how
- 27:38to play. You got to sit and just watch.
- 27:40You'll learn by just watching." And I
- 27:42thought that was so unfair. Um, and they
- 27:44were offering the tiles. They were
- 27:46offering the cards. I mean they were
- 27:47trying to be very inclusive but they
- 27:50didn't want a beginner there really
- 27:51truly or I think they didn't want a
- 27:53teacher there.
- 27:55>> Mhm.
- 27:55>> So have you encountered that same I
- 27:59don't want to say nastiness but it was
- 28:00like not nice. No, I I have encountered
- 28:04in a different way. Um, one of my very
- 28:08very early times of playing years ago
- 28:10after learning the rules, I went to kind
- 28:12of more of an open play that I was put
- 28:15with random people at a table and I was
- 28:16playing with an older woman who knew how
- 28:19to play really well and I was very taken
- 28:22aback with her. there was a rule that I
- 28:26didn't know and it was immediately like
- 28:28you're dead very aggressively
- 28:30>> and you know I um I see the other side
- 28:34of things now now that I've gotten so
- 28:36much more into this and knowing the
- 28:37rules and knowing how to run leagues and
- 28:40sessions and everything. You do have to
- 28:42get comfortable with the fact that your
- 28:44hands might be dead, right? Have to come
- 28:47up with a different way to say but your
- 28:49hand might be dead. It's like any other
- 28:51game, right? We're in play.
- 28:55>> It's like any other game, right? You're
- 28:57playing dodgeball and you get hit with
- 28:59the ball like you're out, right? So, we
- 29:00do it with a lot of other games. Um, so
- 29:03I think people just needs to be a little
- 29:05bit more comfortable with that aspect of
- 29:07it. But there's a way to say and do
- 29:10things. And that is part of why you know
- 29:13we are we do follow national ma jang lee
- 29:15rules when we play things like that is
- 29:17because everything to the minute detail
- 29:21is written down as an exception and a
- 29:23rule because it's been so many years of
- 29:26playing that they've seen it all I guess
- 29:27right
- 29:28>> and so what makes it that you you know
- 29:30there's an answer to everything that
- 29:32happens and if you just follow the rules
- 29:34kindly
- 29:35and I emphasize kindly then and you
- 29:38accept them I you know I've had inst
- 29:40instances where some players have said
- 29:42to me, you know, they're not following
- 29:45the rules, but they're not accepting it
- 29:47and and having their hand out, right?
- 29:49So, anybody that comes to any of our
- 29:51things, we ask like needs, please be
- 29:53friendly, right? If if you're in this
- 29:56just about the game and it's going to be
- 29:59upsetting to you if somebody's a little
- 30:01slower or if somebody, you know,
- 30:04whatever it is, you can't speak kindly,
- 30:07then it's not the right it's not the
- 30:08right space. It's not the vi that, you
- 30:10know, for us it's it's we want to play
- 30:13and we want people to get better, but we
- 30:15want this to be a community of kindness
- 30:17where everybody feels comfortable. I
- 30:19know when we say the word league
- 30:20initially, everybody's like, I can't
- 30:22come to a league. Like, that's too much.
- 30:24I'm not ready. Right. Right.
- 30:26>> And as long as you know how to play and
- 30:27you know the main rules, like you're
- 30:28ready, you know?
- 30:29>> Well, and the reality is apart from this
- 30:32being fun, you have already said it.
- 30:34There's so many wellness benefits to it.
- 30:37Why are you going to put any animosity
- 30:39or any anger or any nastiness towards
- 30:43something that could be so good for you?
- 30:45Right.
- 30:46>> And there's so many parallels like you
- 30:48mentioned the game to life. Um I know my
- 30:51friend Carrie Scotty who's my sherba,
- 30:53the one that taught me to play, she has
- 30:55it put in her calendar as um every
- 30:59whenever she plays, I think it's
- 31:00Wednesday nights, she puts, "Okay, I'm
- 31:02going to my national Alzheimer's
- 31:04prevention game." And that's her that's
- 31:07her therapy and that's her wellness and
- 31:09that's what she does to keep her mind
- 31:11sharp.
- 31:11>> Yeah.
- 31:12>> Um no negativity for that.
- 31:14>> No,
- 31:15>> we don't we're not mean to people when
- 31:16they go to therapy and essentially when
- 31:18you come to the table you're you're
- 31:20going to therapy,
- 31:20>> right?
- 31:21>> No, it's true. It's true. So, you know,
- 31:24it's with anything in life. I think
- 31:26everybody has forgotten sometimes how to
- 31:29be kind, right? So, it's it's just the
- 31:32way the delivery the way you say things.
- 31:34And we're there as instructors always
- 31:37to, you know, help with rules and to
- 31:39enforce them. But we want it to be an
- 31:41inclusive, fun community.
- 31:44>> And there you go. Your life lessons will
- 31:46be patience, letting go,
- 31:49>> strategy, resilience. What else?
- 31:52>> Oh, there's so many. Uh, you know, I I
- 31:54always quote Julia Roberts because she's
- 31:56been quoted uh talking about ma jang and
- 31:58how much she loves it. and she said that
- 32:02ma jang as a game is making order from
- 32:04chaos and it's so accurate because you
- 32:07know you're dealt this jumble of tiles
- 32:10and you have to figure out how to order
- 32:12them throughout. So you know there's
- 32:14that one. Um yes there's definitely
- 32:16patience. Um, also one of my favorites
- 32:20is
- 32:21letting yourself let go of something
- 32:24that seems like it should be good and
- 32:27the right fit but isn't working for you
- 32:29opens up the ability for something else
- 32:31better to come in.
- 32:33>> So, I that's one of my favorites. Um, I
- 32:36was playing this weekend with my family
- 32:39and my sister-in-law actually goes, "I
- 32:41don't want to get rid of this tile. It's
- 32:43just really pretty tough.
- 32:47Yeah, actually. Well, that that's very
- 32:49representative of a lot of things,
- 32:51right? We can we can I had a I had a
- 32:53student the other day that was at
- 32:54something and she was like, "It's like
- 32:55Bachelor. I'm getting rid of this." You
- 32:57know,
- 32:57>> that is so funny.
- 32:59>> Yeah. But I was just Mari condo. It
- 33:01doesn't Yeah. It doesn't give you joy.
- 33:05>> Get rid of it.
- 33:05>> Get rid of it. Things like that. Just
- 33:08about also pivoting like knowing when
- 33:10it's time to move on to something else.
- 33:13um you know there's so many things
- 33:16there's so many things and it's it's
- 33:18also just you know lessons for yourself
- 33:22but also really self-care and not even
- 33:25just there's a lot with memory right
- 33:27people talk about that with the brain
- 33:28but also just I think there's so much
- 33:31sensory aspect to Maj and a lot of what
- 33:33you were talking about with the with the
- 33:35beautiful sets and it's tactile it's
- 33:39visual um I just I find that it's very
- 33:42you you know,
- 33:44therapeutic and I've had so many people
- 33:46that leave and feel the same way. So, we
- 33:49just took a quick break because I
- 33:51actually wanted uh Brooke to set up a
- 33:53winning hand for us here and um I
- 33:57actually think Brooke that this is a
- 33:59great lesson for kids. My daughter is a
- 34:03ma jang shark. She loves to play. She
- 34:06loves to call people out. Um, but I also
- 34:09think it's incredible for executive
- 34:10functioning skills and for kids critical
- 34:13thinking. Um, there's so much involved
- 34:16in play. Not just creating, you know,
- 34:20the organizing your tiles, organizing
- 34:22everything that you see on on the board
- 34:24on the table, but just reading that card
- 34:26alone is a lesson in itself for these
- 34:29kids because there is so much going on
- 34:32on that national maong card. There's
- 34:34colors, there's patterns, there's
- 34:36numbers, there's letters there. I mean,
- 34:38it's it's complex for kids. And I'm
- 34:41actually really proud of her for
- 34:43catching on so quickly.
- 34:44>> Yes. No, it's I I love that kids are
- 34:47playing. I've actually taught a bunch of
- 34:49kids and it's something that we've been
- 34:51talking about expanding more because
- 34:53it's amazing for the brain, which we
- 34:55talked about for kids, too. And
- 34:57ironically, the kids catch on faster
- 34:59than the adults. They grasp it really
- 35:02quickly. They love it. that it has like
- 35:03that little competitive aspect to it and
- 35:06it's just um they've actually shown how
- 35:08it's improved IQ and all different
- 35:11things so it's amazing for kids and
- 35:13that's actually one of the amazing
- 35:14things about Maong is it's generational
- 35:17so everybody can play at a table you're
- 35:19listening to the heartto-he heart
- 35:21podcast with Christy Diaz for Heartful
- 35:23Living where stories connection and
- 35:25intention guide everything we do
- 35:27interested in partnering with us we're
- 35:29always open to collaborations that align
- 35:31with intention creativity and community.
- 35:34If you feel your brand is a match, we'd
- 35:36love to connect and explore what we can
- 35:37create together. And now back to
- 35:39listening.
- 35:41And anybody could just pick up the card
- 35:43at any age and really learn how to
- 35:46decipher it. Yes. Um I know that for
- 35:49example, my sherba again, Carrie Scotty
- 35:51in Texas, her son has one line memorized
- 35:53and that's the one that he plays over
- 35:56and over. I guess it's what he feels
- 35:57more comfortable with. Um, but for
- 35:59example, you showed us a winning hand
- 36:01here, for example. Yes. Uh, talk to me
- 36:04about this winning hand. Would you say
- 36:05that this is like an easy one to learn
- 36:07to play?
- 36:08>> Um, you know, I don't think any of them
- 36:10are necessarily easier or harder.
- 36:12Learning to play and then actually
- 36:15playing them are two different things,
- 36:16right? Because we know there's all these
- 36:17different rules that come into play of
- 36:19things like singles and pairs and things
- 36:21like that, right? This one is for
- 36:23actually from the consecutive run
- 36:25section on the card, which a lot of
- 36:26people love, but a lot of people find it
- 36:29to be challenging at first because it
- 36:31has a lot of different variables way
- 36:33that you can play it, right? So, you can
- 36:35change it lots of different ways. But
- 36:37with this one, it shows you have, you
- 36:39know, four different flowers. You're
- 36:40playing your flowers and then it's three
- 36:43consecutive numbers. Okay?
- 36:44>> So, one of the cool things about
- 36:46consecutive section is you can play any
- 36:48three consecutive numbers. One of the
- 36:50challenges is that it's always written
- 36:52with like one, two, three, one, two,
- 36:54three, four. Right? So, you have to know
- 36:56that that means I can change it to any
- 36:58other consecutive number and then it
- 37:00fits right into the pattern that you see
- 37:03while also paying attention to the color
- 37:05changes because the colors have to do
- 37:07with the different suits that you play.
- 37:09>> Right. And it's not necessarily the
- 37:11color of a crack or the color of a bam
- 37:13or a color of the dot.
- 37:15>> Exactly. color on the card simply tells
- 37:17you which parts are the same suit and
- 37:19which parts are different suits. It
- 37:21doesn't tell you anything about specific
- 37:22suits, which is why it gives you so many
- 37:25different options to play with. So, I
- 37:27mean, hands down, the the most
- 37:29challenging part about the game of maong
- 37:31is figuring out which hand you're going
- 37:33to play.
- 37:33>> Sure.
- 37:34>> And one of those again big life lessons
- 37:37is to try to be adaptive and be open as
- 37:40things go on instead of having, you
- 37:42know, a fixed type of a mindset about
- 37:44things. So, you know, it's it definitely
- 37:47takes practice and I know at the
- 37:49beginning sometimes we tell people it's
- 37:51better to just pick one or two once you
- 37:54get there, right? There's different
- 37:56phases of the game. There's the
- 37:57Charleston and you know, all these
- 37:59different aspects of the game where you
- 38:01do different things at different times
- 38:02to help you with that card. And that's
- 38:04kind of part of why we do our lessons
- 38:06the way that we do so that everything's
- 38:09kind of broken down and it kind of shows
- 38:11you how to go throughout the whole game.
- 38:14>> So there is a learning curve to this
- 38:16game and you are a maong instructor. So
- 38:20how do you set up your instruction?
- 38:23>> So typically we have two different
- 38:26options. I I offer a boot camp. I have
- 38:29two different boot camps. a boot camp
- 38:31one, a boot camp 2, and then something
- 38:33after called beyond the basics. The
- 38:35point of the boot camps are really for
- 38:36people who want to be able to pick a
- 38:39date and they want to come and maybe
- 38:40they don't have their group, they don't
- 38:42have people to play with or they want to
- 38:44bring their friends. We do them in
- 38:45restaurants, right? And the boot camp,
- 38:47the intro to ma boot camp is two to two
- 38:50and a half hours and we work the entire
- 38:52time. Um we start with different types
- 38:55of you know talking about tiles like we
- 38:58did today but we get into different
- 39:00types of exercises. We try to have
- 39:02everybody understand like what ma jang
- 39:04even looks like just like the hand that
- 39:08we just displayed here what it how to
- 39:10even make that hand before you even
- 39:12learn how to play so you know what
- 39:14you're working for. And then we go
- 39:16through all the different stages of the
- 39:17game step by step so that by the end
- 39:19you've been introduced to the to
- 39:21everything and then we build on that in
- 39:24in other lessons. Some people like to
- 39:27have private lessons. They have their
- 39:28groups and they want somebody to just
- 39:30come and teach them. And with those it's
- 39:32a little bit more dependent on what the
- 39:33group itself needs. So where I foresee
- 39:37lots of birthday party promotion here is
- 39:40it's great for birthday parties. It's I
- 39:42mean it's great for anything. We've done
- 39:44corporate events. There's a lot of team
- 39:45building aspects to it. I worked with a
- 39:48PTA board the other day that wanted a
- 39:50team building activity at the beginning
- 39:52of the school year and we did things
- 39:54with partners and you know it's just
- 39:57it's a really valuable way to bring
- 40:01everybody to the table. I love that. So,
- 40:04how can people find you? Because I'm
- 40:05sure you're going to be seeing a lot of
- 40:07people from the Heartful Living
- 40:09community that want to learn to play.
- 40:10Well, I hope so because my whole thing
- 40:12is about like spreading the ma magic of
- 40:14American ma jang and wanting people to
- 40:17figure out how to make it more of a
- 40:18lifestyle. So, I have an Instagram page
- 40:21that's majam.
- 40:27Um, independently we do things with
- 40:29lessons, we do things with events, but
- 40:32together we have the league, we have
- 40:34social events, we do larger parties,
- 40:36corporate events and things like that.
- 40:38So Instagram, I always say, is the
- 40:39easiest place to find us because we post
- 40:41everything there. I also have a
- 40:43newsletter and people can message me.
- 40:45They message me on Instagram all the
- 40:46time to set things up. So I slid into
- 40:48her DMs. It's true. And she answered
- 40:52immediately because of course Miami
- 40:54being the big little city it is, we have
- 40:56how many people in, right? We every day
- 40:59we find somebody else.
- 41:00>> Exactly. So Fro, I can't thank you
- 41:02enough for helping me spread the good
- 41:04word. And um I just want to close out by
- 41:08asking you how Majam has shaped your
- 41:10idea of intentional living. You know, I
- 41:14think we life gets so fast, right? Um
- 41:19they say like the days are long and the
- 41:22years are short and and time flies by
- 41:24and we're so busy, we're so scheduled.
- 41:26Maong to me is being able to be
- 41:29intentional and take the time to sit
- 41:31down to take me time for yourself to
- 41:34benefit yourself and it's opened up the
- 41:37doors to so many different experiences
- 41:39and people for me and I've just really
- 41:42hope to share that with other people.
- 41:43Well, I' it's actually been my pleasure
- 41:45the past, you know, it's been less than
- 41:48a year that we've actually started
- 41:49teaching and doing events and seeing all
- 41:51the people that now play and what it's
- 41:54done for their lives and how much
- 41:56they're enjoying it is just like such a
- 41:58nice thing to see because it's, you
- 42:01know, we need more. We need more good.
- 42:02We need less Linda's.
- 42:05We need less Linda's, more, you know,
- 42:08happy moments. I have people come to my
- 42:10boot camps and they are so different.
- 42:12different ages, different backgrounds,
- 42:13different, you know, lifestyles, and
- 42:16everybody has always gotten along, and
- 42:18they feel like they're like a little
- 42:19family by the end. So, it's been it's
- 42:22been a really nice thing to see because
- 42:26things aren't always so nice out there.
- 42:28Well, there you have it, my friends. I
- 42:30told you guys somehow I would find Maj's
- 42:33way back to Miami. Little did I know
- 42:35that it was already here. I am so
- 42:37excited to be joining the Miami Maj
- 42:40community and join the fun. This game is
- 42:43sweeping the nation. I'm drinking the
- 42:45Kool-Aid and I know that once you guys
- 42:47start drinking it, too, I'll be seeing
- 42:49you at all of these wonderful events
- 42:51with Brooke and Companies. Thank you so
- 42:53much for joining me today. And Brooke,
- 42:54thank you so much for being here.
- 42:56>> Thank you. I'm so glad that you found
- 42:57us. That's all for today. You guys have
- 42:59a wonderful day. Bye-bye.
- 43:00>> Bye.
