- 0:00Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:05We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good food.
- 0:16Hey, everybody.
- 0:17Welcome back to another episode of The Lounge.
- 0:20I'm your libido host and expert, doctor Diane.
- 0:23And I'm so excited to introduce you to a new friend of mine, a sexologist, an amazing,
- 0:30amazing educator, coach, so many more things than just that.
- 0:34This is doctor Toni Baer.
- 0:36We're gonna have the best times today, doctor Toni.
- 0:38Thank you so much for being here.
- 0:41Oh, thank you so much for inviting me.
- 0:42I am super looking forward to this conversation.
- 0:46Me too.
- 0:47We're gonna talk so much about fantasy, about stigma, and many other things, but I really
- 0:52think we should start with the story you were telling me as much as you're comfortable
- 0:56sharing offline around how you got into this work, because I do think it's a unique entrance
- 1:02into sex education and sex, coaching.
- 1:06So can you tell us a little bit about your your history and what made you so interested in
- 1:11exploring the world as a sex educator?
- 1:14Sure.
- 1:15Sure.
- 1:15It you know, there are so many steps in this story, and I wanna make sure I keep it as short
- 1:22as possible so we can talk about more things.
- 1:26What I haven't told you is when I went to graduate school, they they said pick a topic
- 1:33for your dissertation, and my area of expertise is education, teaching.
- 1:39And they said pick a topic that you have a fire in your belly because life is going to happen
- 1:46when you're in school, and it's very difficult to finish.
- 1:50That most people, it isn't that they aren't smart enough.
- 1:53It's that life gets in the way, and that's why they don't get their degree.
- 1:58So my passion at the time was about my little sister and, you know, a trigger warning that,
- 2:07she attempted suicide.
- 2:09And she did so because she was coming out as gay.
- 2:16And we had such an open minded family.
- 2:20I couldn't understand why she would do that.
- 2:24I was the person who found her, took her to the hospital.
- 2:27So that topic is so dear to my heart that, young people shouldn't feel alone.
- 2:36So this was in the 1980s.
- 2:38Right?
- 2:38So the dissertation was in the 90s, and my main purpose was helping young people, come out as
- 2:47gay in a healthy way.
- 2:49And that just progressed from one step to another and I looked at the stigmatization of
- 2:58being different, having sexual fantasies that are different than what we perceive as the
- 3:05mainstream way to be.
- 3:08Right?
- 3:09That we should be heterosexual, that we should be married, that we should have children.
- 3:15And what if people are different?
- 3:18So my interest in sexology, and I couldn't wait to retire after forty years of teaching so I
- 3:25could do this full time in helping people talk about those fantasies, normalize those
- 3:33fantasies, discuss how to communicate those fantasies with their partners, and not feel
- 3:41that it's a secret that they needed to keep, and, and and how to be just okay with yourself.
- 3:50And that's kind of the progression.
- 3:53So I mostly, work with heterosexual, women that are partnered who have fantasies and need
- 4:03someone to talk.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:06And I I think it's so important.
- 4:08I wanna throw in the idea here too.
- 4:10I've I see so many people, particularly women, where it comes down to even shame with things
- 4:16like masturbation and even looking at their own masturbation and even looking at their own
- 4:19female anatomy.
- 4:20Right?
- 4:21So I think the shame and the stigma is it's so deep and interwoven, and we're just not talking
- 4:28about it.
- 4:29So I'm so glad you're talking about this.
- 4:30And tell us a little bit about how whether the stigma is from something like masturbation,
- 4:37whether it's from a fantasy, whether it's from something else.
- 4:40Like, how do you actually walk people through it, and where are there any, like, initial
- 4:45things that you can teach us around the utility of fantasy for helping with breaking down some
- 4:51of that shame?
- 4:53Right.
- 4:53They'd you know, I think fantasies are so important to have, To live in your mind and
- 5:02expand your imagination, I think the creativity of what you think and feel helps with so many
- 5:11different things.
- 5:13To be able to talk to your spouse and say, you know, this really turns me on.
- 5:21When I talk to men, and this is stereotypical, but this is my experience.
- 5:25Like, I'm in a taxi in a different city going to the hotel, and I'm chit chatting with the
- 5:31Uber driver, the taxi driver who's a man, and I tell them what I do, and they wanna give me the
- 5:38phone number of their wife.
- 5:40Like, if there's something that she's thinking, especially if it's a little kinky, my god,
- 5:45please, you know, have her tell me that this is what we wanna do.
- 5:50So I think it's, you know, why I work predominantly with women, I mean, 95% or more.
- 5:58It's something that helps relationships, all partners, all genders, all orientations, and I
- 6:07think it helps not only with relationships, it also helps, one's stimulation and one's
- 6:16lubrication.
- 6:18And there's just so much that, you know, living with these fantasies does.
- 6:25And the shame that you mentioned can come from so many areas.
- 6:29And most of my research, it predominantly comes in a I'm not stigmatizing religion, but a lot
- 6:39of it comes from spiritual traditions that, an individual's taught that it's a bad thing.
- 6:47In fact, I remember my mother so well as she talked to us as children if we touched anywhere
- 6:55near genitalia.
- 6:57The word would always be shame, shame.
- 7:00She would actually use that word.
- 7:03She did, you know, grow up as a foster child in a convent.
- 7:07I mean, that helps explain kind of my background.
- 7:11So if I can help anyone get past the hearing one's mother, say shame, shame in your head, I
- 7:20would love, you know, to help anybody get past that because that's horrible.
- 7:25Yeah.
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:26I I learned recently with a friend of mine that the pudendal if you look at the root word of
- 7:31pudendal, which is the nerve artery and vein that go to the clitoris, for example, if you
- 7:36look at the root word, the definition is something like body part to be ashamed of.
- 7:41Ugh.
- 7:42That is, like isn't that out of control?
- 7:44So it's, like, even in our medical language, right, that it's it's shame.
- 7:48So then, like, to bring it back to this concept of of fantasy, a curiosity I have in listening
- 7:54to you is I feel like in in what I see sometimes in my work as well as what we were
- 8:00talking about just a little while ago offline, was that something that can happen sometimes
- 8:05for the enjoyment of intimacy is a a challenge sometimes with staying present in the moment
- 8:11and actually enjoying the experience and actually be really allowing the body to feel
- 8:17pleasure.
- 8:18Have you found fantasy to to help bring more, like, presence?
- 8:22And and and what else I guess I guess my other question is, what else beyond, say, getting out
- 8:28of the stigma have you found that fantasy has has helped with for the individual or for the
- 8:34partnered relationship?
- 8:35Right.
- 8:37I think about,
- 8:40you know, just the expansion of possibility that, you know, if you perceive, sexual
- 8:49relations to be, you know, the formula a, b, c, d, it gets awfully boring after a while.
- 8:58You know, it's a wonderful feeling having sexual relations.
- 9:04But the idea that you would experiment with different positions, that's simple.
- 9:10I would argue that the majority of partners throughout The United States are not open to
- 9:18trying something different.
- 9:19I think your listeners, my listeners are a set of individuals that have a very open mind and
- 9:27have taken interest in expanding possibility.
- 9:34And I, you know, as I said, it it helps with just medical functioning, like body functioning
- 9:41to relationships.
- 9:43To the relationship, I think, if it is a religious block, your relationship with your
- 9:51own religion.
- 9:53My father said to me long time ago, I grew up in a very strict Catholic household, that, you
- 9:59know, accept the parts of the religion that you can and realize that there's some parts of
- 10:05every religion that are archaic in its tradition that do not match, at this point,
- 10:13twenty first century life that, you know, don't let it, restrict the possibilities you have in
- 10:23life, such as being a woman.
- 10:26Right?
- 10:26Such as, for myself, being gay.
- 10:29Right?
- 10:30All of those areas, if I would strictly interpret my religion, that I grew up in in
- 10:37Catholicism, would restrict some of the possibilities of what I could experience in
- 10:42one.
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:44I relate.
- 10:45I grew up very, very strictly Catholic as well, so I relate to all of the, you know, all of the
- 10:51dogma that gets sometimes put onto us that is archaic and as a way of overcoming that, I
- 10:56think, is really valuable.
- 10:59So do you have any advice?
- 11:01I know working with you, you have all your it's much more complicated than we can cover on a
- 11:06podcast.
- 11:07But do you have any advice for just somebody that is, like, playing with fantasy in their
- 11:12mind and they really wanna tell their partner, but they're so afraid that they're gonna be
- 11:17shamed or judged or and they feel embarrassed about it?
- 11:20Like, where does somebody even really begin to start with that?
- 11:27Right.
- 11:28Well, I just worked with a couple, and we tried something that worked really well.
- 11:33So I'll share it with you.
- 11:35Eight.
- 11:37The I gave that individual a huge checklist with all these different kinds of sexual
- 11:45activities, and some of them are a little further out.
- 11:49They're a little kinky.
- 11:50Right?
- 11:51And and she shared it with her partner.
- 11:54They had a nice sit down kinda dinner at some point, and, you know, the topic came up of, you
- 12:00know, what are you reading?
- 12:01What are you doing?
- 12:02She said, oh my god.
- 12:03I came across this checklist.
- 12:05Right?
- 12:06And this checklist, I just, was checking off my my fantasies and my thoughts of my sexuality,
- 12:15and I thought it would be really fun if we did it together tonight, you know, if you have a
- 12:19date.
- 12:20And then you get an opportunity.
- 12:22You know, you put it off on, like, a magazine that you found it in or you found it online,
- 12:28and it just triggered something in you to do it.
- 12:31You fell down one of those holes online.
- 12:34And and what a great conversation starter.
- 12:40Right?
- 12:41And it worked out well for them anyhow.
- 12:43They have some things they wanna try now.
- 12:46And then I'm imagining because, like, what you were talking about earlier around people kinda
- 12:50getting into that rut.
- 12:52I know a lot of this a lot of us in the sexual coaching, medical therapy world call that,
- 12:59like, the sexual script, right, where it's like, I do a, I do b, I do c, and then we're
- 13:03done as you kinda described it.
- 13:05So then are you finding then with an example like you just shared with us then that it's a
- 13:12huge help for people as far as getting out of that script?
- 13:15And and I'm also wondering because we were talking about, like, you know, libido offline.
- 13:19How much do you find that people then when they're given permission to play with fantasy,
- 13:24to drop that stigma, how much are you finding that that's actually then kinda providing that
- 13:30spark and that fuel to bring passion back to the relationship?
- 13:34Yeah.
- 13:35It's, you know, for some individuals, it's a renaissance.
- 13:38You know?
- 13:38It's a whole new chapter, and it's exciting.
- 13:43You remember when you first got together with your partner, and it's like, it's exciting,
- 13:48it's a honeymoon, and, you know, things start getting ordinary.
- 13:54They're still wonderful, but, to have that excitement again, like, people many times
- 14:01accept the idea that it is inevitable that your libido is going to decrease or it's inevitable
- 14:09that your interest in your partner is going to change over time.
- 14:13Everybody talks about that.
- 14:15That, you know, well, you know, they're more like a companion now.
- 14:18I love them, and I love taking trips with them.
- 14:22But then the emphasis no longer is on sexuality.
- 14:26And you and I have spoken before about how important it is, and you have the medical side
- 14:33of how, you know, sexually engaging with with someone helps you, your mind, your blood flow,
- 14:43your body, your health in general.
- 14:45And, why wouldn't you continue being sexual because you take care of yourself in diet and
- 14:55exercise, and this is another very important part of our our our entire health.
- 15:03Right?
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:05Yeah.
- 15:06I'm wondering then because I think, like, in medicine, you know, and talking about medicine,
- 15:11there's some level of individuality, right, where it's like, oh, one person's libido low
- 15:16libido might be low testosterone.
- 15:18Another might be stress.
- 15:19Another might be pelvic floor.
- 15:21It might be something to do with their relationship.
- 15:24So I imagine when it comes to, hey, our fantasy stories.
- 15:29Right?
- 15:29Like, obviously, there is gonna be such a huge difference where one person's fantasy, like you
- 15:34said, it might just be like, hey.
- 15:36Flip me over, and let's do a different position.
- 15:39And another person, it could be something very, very, very, you know, kinky or down the the
- 15:43fetish world.
- 15:45So how do you how do you begin in your work?
- 15:48I'm very curious.
- 15:49Like, start teasing apart for people, like and and help make it safe for them to go down,
- 15:55like, whatever fantasy world is and really feel safe to explore that?
- 15:58Like, where does safety come into the picture?
- 16:02Even be, before safety, we talk about consent.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:07K?
- 16:07So consent is, not an option.
- 16:11Right?
- 16:11Both individuals need to consent to trying something or doing something.
- 16:18You don't want to engage in your fantasy by surprise one night.
- 16:24Right?
- 16:25Safety is another huge issue.
- 16:29I mean, to use a very simple example, many individuals, in fact, it's in the top 10 of
- 16:36women's top 10 fantasies every year, is to be bound.
- 16:41Right?
- 16:42Some kind of hold me down or tie me up.
- 16:46And just using rope around one's wrist is very dangerous for, nerve damage.
- 16:55Like, it's it's you have to know what you're doing and how you're doing.
- 17:01So when I'm talking to my clients, you know, I'll recommend if if your partner is open to
- 17:08this and you wanna be tied up, why don't you try a scarf first, right, not a rope.
- 17:15You know?
- 17:16With rope, you need rope safety, scissors.
- 17:20Right?
- 17:20So just something very simple as you wanna be tied up in, you know, 02/2024 when we're doing
- 17:27this interview.
- 17:29That is pretty tame in in most relationships.
- 17:35You know?
- 17:36And I you know, at this point in my life, I don't even think of that as key, but it is.
- 17:42It is you know, the definition of kink is, something out of the norm, and the norm for
- 17:50each couple is different.
- 17:52Right?
- 17:52Each generation is different, you know, to my parents' generation that was born closer to the
- 18:00turn of the twentieth century.
- 18:02You know, what was normal was missionary.
- 18:05What's normal to my generation, and I'm in my sixties now, is to have different kinds of
- 18:12positions.
- 18:13But what's normal to somebody in their forties might be oral sex.
- 18:18Like, that's, like, normal.
- 18:20Right?
- 18:21So, you know, with as time goes on, we become in The United States more accepting of doing a
- 18:31variety of things sexually.
- 18:33So fantasies really take a a huge, you know, continuum of possibility.
- 18:43And, you know, if one of the greatest, I think, challenges with fantasies is fantasizing about
- 18:53someone other than your partner.
- 18:56And, again, it's in the top 10 fantasies.
- 18:59Fantasizing about an authority figure outside of your relationship, whether it's like a
- 19:06principal kind of idea or a priest or, you know, like like and many of those fantasy
