- 0:00Just as a heads up, four people listening.
- 0:01Sorry if there's any extra background noise.
- 0:03There's some construction going on.
- 0:05We'll do our best to clean it up, but otherwise just enjoy the nice low hum.
- 0:11I thought you were calling out our four listeners.
- 0:14Just a heads up, four people listening.
- 0:17It's like, wow.
- 0:19We have more than that.
- 0:20OK, at least we have some bots.
- 0:22Yeah, I love the box.
- 0:24Oh, God, oh my God.
- 0:30Fuck.
- 0:37I mean, it often is that Sean will intro the movie and then you will re-intro it.
- 0:43Yeah, it's a great formula.
- 0:44Yeah, I mean, the system works.
- 0:46It's a mansplaining podcast that I'm just practicing on, Sean.
- 0:49Welcome back to Cage Match, starring Nick and Sean.
- 0:53I am Sean and I'm Nick with our producer.
- 0:57Peter, hello.
- 0:58This is a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage.
- 1:01Yeah. So a little behind the curtains scene right now.
- 1:04We haven't recorded in a few weeks because of just scheduling things
- 1:07and me having to travel.
- 1:09And it is currently almost nine in the morning, I think.
- 1:13Which is the wrong time for podcasting other than sexy voices.
- 1:16Yeah. So welcome to a very special cage match in the morning.
- 1:19Get your mimosa and your finest robe.
- 1:22Sit back and listen to us debate the finer points of one of America's greatest actors.
- 1:27Definitely our snappiest intro.
- 1:29So this is a podcast where we're going to put 64 Nicolas Cage movies
- 1:35head to head against each other and we're going to figure out which one is the best.
- 1:38I don't know if somebody said that before.
- 1:40I was kind of staring at my beverage.
- 1:42Peter, you said we have you did the math that we've done 20 movies so far.
- 1:47Yeah, this is we've watched 20 Nicolas Cage movies at least one time.
- 1:52Well, I guess I haven't.
- 1:53I've skipped a couple of the ones that I really thought were going to make me want to die.
- 1:57But you still watch dog eat dog.
- 1:59I did. And Ghost Rider. I did.
- 2:02Yeah. And we're going to make you watch one of them again.
- 2:04Your decision making skills suck.
- 2:07Yeah, I'm bad at this.
- 2:09So this week, our matchup is 1987
- 2:14Coen Brothers Classic Raising Arizona versus 1994
- 2:19Thing Trapped in Paradise.
- 2:22Period comedy. Yeah.
- 2:24Peter, as I said, it's been like three weeks.
- 2:25Do we usually just go into a film now?
- 2:27Yeah, you basically just kind of start.
- 2:28I mean, how about raising Arizona?
- 2:30All right. I can see why my friends back East think you should be a host.
- 2:35So 19. They're wrong. We don't have the budget for that.
- 2:37That's right. We we have one patron.
- 2:40Thank you, Josh. We we love you.
- 2:42I sign up for a patron.
- 2:43Yeah, it helps us be better.
- 2:47It'll eventually pay for the mimosas.
- 2:49They're part of a sparkle, buddy.
- 2:50I mean, we could just have the sparkle, but you tear.
- 2:53Yeah, I like to call yourself a sparkle, buddy.
- 2:55Oh, that's actually really good. All right.
- 2:57Well done. Well thought.
- 2:58No, you're welcome. All right.
- 3:00So 1987 Raising Arizona directed by the Coen Brothers,
- 3:03starring Nicolas Cage as H.I. McDonough, Holly Hunter as Ed
- 3:08and John Goodman as Gail.
- 3:11In brief, reprieve criminal H.I. McDonough falls in love with the local cop
- 3:16Ed after his third parole. He proposes
- 3:21they get hitched, move into their nice starter home
- 3:25trailer and decide to start a family.
- 3:29Things don't necessarily go as planned when Ed finds out she's barren.
- 3:32So they steal the favorite child of local
- 3:37unpainted furniture magnate Nathan, Arizona.
- 3:42Hilarity ensues without getting into too much detail in the synopsis.
- 3:46Those are the broad strokes of the film.
- 3:49Ed's but Ed's best friends from prison break out and come and stay with them.
- 3:53Not Ed's best friends.
- 3:55I suppose. Oh, yeah. Sorry.
- 3:57Hi. I kept throwing me off because I'm like, is his name Hyde?
- 4:01I would tie it.
- 4:02Robert I. McDonough. Yeah, that's it.
- 4:04Yeah. Ed does not like them because she is former law enforcement and baby crazy.
- 4:09I think is the only way to put it.
- 4:11She has her husband steal a baby.
- 4:13I think her biggest reservation is that she was a cop
- 4:16and she knows they broke out of prison.
- 4:18I mean, considering everything else they've done at this point,
- 4:21I don't know if that's a big reservation for her.
- 4:24Hey, a grand theft baby is not the same as tunneling out of prison.
- 4:31And they had too many baby more babies than they could handle.
- 4:33It said it was in the newspaper.
- 4:36No, no, man. I think they did them a favor.
- 4:38So this is my first time watching this film.
- 4:40I'd never seen this film before.
- 4:41I know it was. It's a second Coen Brothers second film.
- 4:44I think they're funny, good writing boys.
- 4:48This was my first time as well, I believe.
- 4:50I think I had maybe caught little bits of it
- 4:52on when like Josie was watching it on TV.
- 4:55I don't know. It was a first sit down watch through for me.
- 4:59And I enjoyed it. Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
- 5:02It was a it was a nice romp.
- 5:03There's a lot of great Coen Brothers aspects of the movie.
- 5:08Yeah, it's got a nice clip.
- 5:10The the dialogue is all great.
- 5:12It does move fairly rapidly, like in the first what?
- 5:16Eight minutes we see H.I.
- 5:19get arrested three times, paroled three times and get married.
- 5:24Yeah, very truncated intro introduces all the main players.
- 5:27Yeah, they don't waste a lot of time.
- 5:29What was a H.I.'s M.O. usually criminalize?
- 5:33Are you quizzing me? I'm quizzing you.
- 5:36No, he's robbed convenience stores.
- 5:40That's his thing. He was this thing. Yeah.
- 5:42Yeah, it was like his way will.
- 5:43Yeah, convenience stores always.
- 5:45Yeah, always with an unloaded gun.
- 5:47Yeah, it's not armed robbery.
- 5:49It's not armed robbery if there's no.
- 5:52Yeah, so he robbed convenience stores all the time.
- 5:55It kind of had like a romanticized relationship with robbing convenience
- 5:59stores, which just comes up throughout the movie.
- 6:04I mean, he also had a romanticized relationship with this cop
- 6:07who just took his mugshot every time he got dragged in there.
- 6:09Well, she was like a beautiful desert flower.
- 6:14I mean, the lines in this movie are so good.
- 6:16Oh, it's so good.
- 6:17And Nicolas Cage is narration and his physical comedy.
- 6:23And this is a lot of fun to watch, like all the faces he makes.
- 6:28He's just like getting beat and he's got like just one eye open.
- 6:32And according to the Cohen brothers,
- 6:35he got really into his hair during shooting this film.
- 6:38The more danger H.I. was in, the bigger the swoop would be,
- 6:42which I thought was a fun little detail.
- 6:44Yeah, his hair is wild.
- 6:46Yeah, I think it was by far the best comedic performance
- 6:51I've seen from him.
- 6:52Intentionally comedic, because I've seen some funny Nick Cage.
- 6:56I think this is just smoothly like the whole movie
- 7:01has the same like his character is just well defined.
- 7:05And this is credit to Joel and Ethan Cohen, but well written.
- 7:09Everything just works throughout.
- 7:11Yeah. And his performance is so consistent.
- 7:16He doesn't have bad scenes.
- 7:18It's just now he everything that his character is in rocks.
- 7:24Yeah. And it's a short film.
- 7:25It's only an hour 30.
- 7:27Yeah, it goes quick.
- 7:28There's no wasted screen time in this film.
- 7:31The cinematography, I love just them out in the desert.
- 7:34Their little silver motorhome.
- 7:37When he's stealing the babies,
- 7:39there's a very great babies day out scene where all the babies are like
- 7:44getting out of their crib and trying to go downstairs
- 7:46and you have to stop them while not getting caught.
- 7:48Yeah, his tiptoeing is great.
- 7:50Yeah, his little leather like dance shoes or whatever he's wearing all the time.
- 7:54His old man shoes, as they would say in Sorcerer's Apprentice.
- 7:59So many callbacks.
- 8:00Oh, man. All right.
- 8:02I remember what we do here. Yeah, I'm getting back.
- 8:05I'm kind of amazed that we remember any of these.
- 8:08It's all I do with my free time.
- 8:10So it's it's my only hobby these days.
- 8:13So kind of getting more into some more that beats the film.
- 8:16So it is Baron.
- 8:17They find out like they are very much trying to have kids.
- 8:21I think H.I. talks about how they, you know, kind of plan her cycles
- 8:26so they can have their best chance at and then they just do it
- 8:28the rest of the time to just in case like you know,
- 8:31in case like he gets tackled coming home from the machine shop one day.
- 8:36I'm going to throw my quote in here right now, but I love this one.
- 8:39So it's high says that we know his insides were a rocky place
- 8:44where my seed could find no purchase.
- 8:46Yeah, that's a great.
- 8:48That is probably the best written line in this film, at least for Nick Cage.
- 8:53There's a lot of great lines in this film and a lot of quotable ones.
- 8:57His note that he leaves her later in the movie is also pretty eloquent.
- 9:00So like high shows, like he's got some kind of like poetry inside of him
- 9:05for somebody who robs convenience stores in like panty hose on his head.
- 9:11Son, you got panties on your head.
- 9:14He always sort of has like a vacant look on his face.
- 9:17Like I kind of imagine, you know, in cartoons where they like zoom
- 9:19into someone's brain and it's just like another animal, like
- 9:22bouncing their arms up and down.
- 9:23Yeah, no, like he's a living cartoon.
- 9:26This is a live action cartoon. Very much.
- 9:29Even even to the point of the action.
- 9:30So Edwino wants to have children.
- 9:33They can't decide to steal a baby because they they can't handle five babies.
- 9:39Clearly. Yeah.
- 9:40So makes him do it, which again, great physical comedy.
- 9:45One of the babies crawling under the crib and crawling after it.
- 9:48The tiptoeing at one point, he can't he just leaves and he's like
- 9:52feels bad about kidnapping someone's kid.
- 9:55And she's just like, get get in there high and get me that baby.
- 10:00Yeah, I want the baby.
- 10:02And then meet the baby.
- 10:04They get home and suddenly they're like, we're going to turn over a new leaf.
- 10:08We're going to be good parents.
- 10:09We're going to no more crime.
- 10:11And she gets really mad whenever he never says it, like a hard swear
- 10:16around the baby, but damn, she gets like, don't swear around the baby.
- 10:19And he's like, he he's a troublemaker.
- 10:21It's like, no, he's perfect.
- 10:23Like I can see it in his eyes.
- 10:24He's got that spark.
- 10:25Yeah, he's going to be a little outlaw or whatever they said.
- 10:29And of course, as soon as like they have everything they want and life can be normal.
- 10:34High's friends break out of the clink in an amazing birth from the earth situation.
- 10:39I just I've seen that scene referenced in so many things
- 10:45and never known where it came from until now.
- 10:48I just loved John Goodman, like holding his brother over his head and just yelling.
- 10:55John Goodman yells so good in this movie.
- 10:59I've got to say he stole it for me.
- 11:01He is so good.
- 11:02And I can understand why the Coen's ended up working with him a bunch of other times.
- 11:05Yeah, he is.
- 11:06Yeah, he's amazing.
- 11:07Best part of this film.
- 11:09Like acting wise is the best part of this film.
- 11:11I wouldn't go that far, but I mean, it's great.
- 11:14I just I think.
- 11:16Who's your best?
- 11:17Nicholas Cage.
- 11:17OK, yeah, I was like he's in one of the smalls.
- 11:20Yeah, Leonard Smalls.
- 11:22Leonard Smalls plays like a mercenary bounty hunter,
- 11:26and he comes in and they just show him like destroying everything in this narration of him,
- 11:33like which is a dream sequence being extra hard on all of the like good things
- 11:38and the smaller and the cuter it is, the like more aggressive he is towards it.
- 11:43So he's like throwing grenades at rabbits.
- 11:46He takes a shotgun and he shoots a little lizard off of a rock.
- 11:49So Nick, it's time for my favorite game.
- 11:52Let's see how big I can get that vein inside of Peter's head to swell.
- 11:56Oh, OK. Thirsty.
- 11:57Is it time for mouth noises?
- 12:00No, I just love.
- 12:02I absolutely love that scene because Ghost Rider makes a callback to that scene
- 12:06when they do the riding through the desert.
- 12:08Yeah. And I want to reference
- 12:10and I will use any chance I can to reference the cinematic masterpiece
- 12:13that is Ghost Rider that we have to watch again with Peter.
- 12:17And I'm just going to watch Peter.
- 12:18I don't want to totally insert myself into this too much, but fuck Ghost Rider.
- 12:23It's probably going all the way now.
- 12:24Yeah. Just out of spite.
- 12:27Your vote is cast.
- 12:29Right. We established last time that if you tell Nick to not do something,
- 12:33he's going to do it.
- 12:34So sorry, everyone.
- 12:36Ghost Rider, when I have stopped listening to the rest of the episode.
- 12:40But yes, things progress.
- 12:41You know, things start to unravel.
- 12:44They find it difficult to hide the fact that they stole the baby.
- 12:47People are starting to kind of figure things out.
- 12:50Hi. Starting to come apart.
- 12:51I'm going to give my quote now because it's what got the best.
- 12:54Just chuckle out of me is he's narrating how hard things are at home right now.
- 12:59I even caught myself driving by convenience stores that weren't on my way home.
- 13:04Yeah, I might as well give my quote as well.
- 13:07Since we're at this moment,
- 13:09it's high saying I even caught myself driving by convenience stores
- 13:14that weren't on the way home.
- 13:17I thought that really fucking slapped.
- 13:19That was a good quote.
- 13:21Peter, do you have a quote that you want to share right now?
- 13:23Yeah. The one about convenience stores is really good.
- 13:27Nailed it. OK. Stuck the landing.
- 13:29Thanks, guys. But yeah.
- 13:30So eventually after he beats up his boss for suggesting they swap
- 13:36on the drive home.
- 13:38Let's be clear, swap wives, swap wives.
- 13:41And maybe kids.
- 13:42He had the worst kids.
- 13:44Like one of the kids is just writing fart and crayon on their wall.
- 13:47One kid is just spraying Nick Cage's white pants with a squirt gun
- 13:51and goes, Mr. McDonough beat himself. Mr. McDonough beat himself.
- 13:54Yeah. This kid.
- 13:56One of the kids had an eye patch and was just throwing jello at high.
- 14:02Yeah, it was a little girl.
- 14:04Just handfuls of jello, like green jello and berries.
- 14:09So do you count this as a movie with a good kid or a bad kid situation?
- 14:12Because those kids sucked.
- 14:14But the baby was pretty rad.
- 14:15Oh, Nathan Jr. Yeah.
- 14:17He was just the sweetest little thing.
- 14:19Yeah. Just melts my heart.
- 14:21I would say this goes in the good kid category because everyone who meets Nathan
- 14:24Jr. falls in love with that kid. Yeah.
- 14:26And then I mean, even and Gail and Evel.
- 14:30Yeah, Gail and Evel at the at the end, they kidnapped the baby
- 14:33to turn it in for the reward, the reward, but then suddenly fall in love with it.
- 14:37And they're like, this is our baby.
- 14:39Well, they also keep leaving the baby on the top of the car.
- 14:42And then they'll like drive away like they'll rob somebody drive away.
- 14:46It's like, oh, where's that baby?
- 14:47And then they have to go back and twice.
- 14:50And then, yeah, but the baby always just lands perfectly OK on the floor.
- 14:53It's always fun. I've left things on the top of my car.
- 14:55That's not how that goes.
- 14:57Have you left a baby on top of your car? Not mine.
- 14:59Well, then wait. After Ed kind of completely curtailed his life,
- 15:08he goes into a convenience store to buy some huggies and just while he's in there,
- 15:13decides to stick up the place and sees him do this, you know, gets that car,
- 15:17you know, fuck you, fuck you and like drives off as she's driving off.
- 15:21Hi turns back and the convenience store teenager has a giant gun.
- 15:26I think they had like one gun for this movie and everyone just had this massive
- 15:30just fucking revolver.
- 15:32But then the cops immediately show up and Hi is running through the street,
- 15:36holds up a guy in a pickup truck, gets him to drive off.
- 15:39Dogs start running after him.
- 15:40But just the amount, the sheer amount of what's the word I'm thinking of?
- 15:44Chaos. Chaos, but excessive force in this in this scene,
- 15:48because there's a cop just literally sitting in the window of his car,
- 15:52just blasting away. Cops are the worst.
- 15:55Yeah, no, I mean, that's bad cop.
- 15:58Yeah, there's no like Nicolas Cage cops in this movie.
- 16:02Yeah, there's no Nick Cage cops in these movies.
- 16:04But like the whole scene in the in the grocery store,
- 16:07because he runs into a grocery store to try and get away from the cops.
- 16:09And the cop is just shooting like running down aisles, just letting go.
- 16:14And then everyone in the store joins in like the butcher pulls out a shotgun
- 16:19and just starts shooting at Nick Cage.
- 16:21And there's dogs running through like there's now a pack of dogs.
- 16:24It went from one dog in a backyard to just a pack of dogs
- 16:28chasing this lady with a shopping cart.
- 16:31It's a great scene.
- 16:33Oh, it reminded me of Birdie to where like the little dogs have joined the pack.
- 16:38Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 16:39There's another callback to another callback to another movie we watch.
- 16:42Nick Cage, like an adaptation, goes through a windshield.
- 16:45Well, the windshield was blown out, but he goes out the front of a car when they when it crashes.
- 16:49Yeah. This whole time, though, it's that like yodeling music, right?
- 16:53Oh, yeah. Again, this is this is a live action cartoon
- 16:56and to the point where the bounty hunter that he dreams will find them one day is actually a real person.
- 17:02Yeah. Leonard Smalls is there to find Gail and Evel.
- 17:06He's there to find the two escaped prisoners and then finds out about this baby situation.
- 17:11Solely by being atop a hill. Yeah.
- 17:14Looking down at a trailer. Yeah.
- 17:15And then he extorts Nathan Arizona Senior for more money and it becomes a whole thing.
- 17:20Which turns into the climax of the film.
- 17:23So that's how he gets roped into trying to find this baby.
- 17:26Well, I mean, let's talk about Gail and Evel steal the baby.
- 17:30What? Them taking the baby? No. OK.
- 17:32Them taking the baby, losing the baby, getting it back.
- 17:35And then they're going to go rob a bank.
- 17:37Can't leave the baby in the car because if they get if they get killed in the bank, no one will find the baby for days.
- 17:42So they bring the baby into the bank robbery, which has one of my favorite just not Nick Cage lines.
- 17:47The film's like, all right, everybody freeze. Get on the ground.
- 17:50What is it? Do you want us to freeze? Get on the ground.
- 17:54Because if we freeze, we can't move. We get on the ground.
- 17:58We can't freeze on account of us moving to get on the ground.
- 18:01Both these films had like really snarky. They had all of the in bank robbed.
- 18:07Well, they had almost the same bank robbery scenes.
- 18:10Yeah, that's true. That's really true.
- 18:12Of course, blue dye is put in the bag of the money they steal, which when it goes off in the car, everything's blue.
- 18:19And John Goodman is just screaming while trying to wipe paint off the windshield while careening out of control.
- 18:28I was dying. But of course, this leads to and high trying to get the baby back and meeting the bounty hunter and Nick Cage getting the ever loving shit kicked out of it.
- 18:39It was such an entertaining scene.
- 18:42He's got the board like after he hits Leonard off the I'm just going to keep calling Leonard off the motorcycle and then throws a knife at him and he catches the knife in the board and he just gives us like this super just stony.
- 18:58Him trying to climb under the car to get away and just get dragged back out by his ankles spits a spits a tooth in a text.
- 19:06Cobb was the character's name Leonard.
- 19:09It's a way better bounty hunter name. And of course, when he's pretty much being murdered crushed there, he's high as just grabbing at Leonard and when it's just got grenades on him.
- 19:21So he like finally gets away, finally like gets dropped and shows the pin and Leonard just stands there dumbfounded for like a solid five seconds before attempting to take off his vest and then just a meaty chunks.
- 19:35Yeah, he's got two shotguns in his hand so he can't like get them out of his hands fast enough to get the grenade away.
- 19:42He gets gibbed. Yeah, it's a jibbed or gibbed.
- 19:45I don't know. Put it in a comment. Tell me all about your vernacular baby.
- 19:53Um, so they get the baby back. They decide to return it and to be forgiven for doing the right thing. Well, he was going to give him money and then he was like, oh, these motherfuckers.
- 20:08He doesn't say that. I mean, he's like, oh, you two stole the baby. And they're like, yeah, end of movie. Yeah, we couldn't have our own.
- 20:15But we had to do this. We had to do this. We had to do this. And so, you know, it's just like a whole new world.
- 20:24Yeah. And so I think it was a good idea to just keep him in mind for them. Not necessarily.
- 20:32And then there's a dream extended dream sequence of them having a bunch of kids in the future, even though they say they're going to know they have a family and maybe things will work out.
- 20:43imagines Florence, Arizona, discovering the missing baby.
- 20:48And it's going through the fields
- 20:50in this low angled shot, shaky cam thing
- 20:53that is very reminiscent of Evil Dead 2.
- 20:56Well, they were such huge fans of Sam Raimi
- 21:00that they wanted to do the up the building
- 21:02in the window scene.
- 21:03So one of the things that I think
- 21:04is really fascinating about this,
- 21:06and anybody who listens to the Blank Check podcast
- 21:08has heard all this,
- 21:09but the Coens and Sam Raimi and Ted Raimi
- 21:14and Frances McDormand and Holly Hunter
- 21:16and fucking Kathy Bates were roommates.
- 21:20Wow, weird.
- 21:21Yeah.
- 21:22And one of the Coens is married to Frances McDormand.
- 21:24So it's like the start of it all was there.
- 21:26So there was a lot of like collaboration.
- 21:28And you think about like watching
- 21:29the early Evil Dead movies and this,
- 21:31and some of the fight scenes and stuff like that
- 21:33felt so fucking similar.
- 21:35Like there's a lot of love between those three.
- 21:39That's a good segue to my next fun fact about collaboration.
- 21:42Apparently Nick Cage and the Coens really clashed
- 21:44on this one in terms of Nick Cage wanting to improvise more,
- 21:48put more of himself into it,
- 21:49like have more control over it.
- 21:50And he wasn't used to directors having
- 21:53a very tight focused idea.
- 21:56And a lot of Nick Cage's improvised scenes
- 21:59were cut from the film because it didn't,
- 22:00it clashed with like the view of the film was.
- 22:03Hmm, interesting.
- 22:05Yeah.
- 22:05That's funny and not to dive
- 22:08into the next movie too early or anything,
- 22:09but the cast on Trapped in Paradise
- 22:13also clashed with their director.
- 22:15But to the point where Nicholas Cage
- 22:17ended up directing a bunch of it.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:19And they had the opposite problem
- 22:21where the director didn't want to direct it.
- 22:24Yeah.
- 22:24And the actors didn't want to be in it.
- 22:26Yeah.
- 22:27Apparently Kevin Costner auditioned for High three times.
- 22:30That would not have been as good.
- 22:32Probably the most interesting thing
- 22:33just in terms of what I know about filmmaking.
- 22:36The script was written in three and a half weeks
- 22:38and it took 10 weeks to shoot.
- 22:40I mean, this is early in the Cohen's career.
- 22:42So that part kind of makes sense to me,
- 22:44like a fairly short timeline, fairly tight budget.
- 22:47Yeah.
- 22:48I mean, they had one movie that had come out before that
- 22:50that was weird.
- 22:52And they like really pivoted from that to this.
- 22:55Well, they wanted to do something completely different,
- 22:57something more lighthearted.
- 22:58They wanted to do something funny.
- 23:00And I think they succeeded.
- 23:02Yeah, it's funny and lighthearted.
- 23:06Well, and then I have just a quick question.
- 23:08Do you guys like the Cohen brothers?
- 23:10Yeah.
- 23:11I like some of their films.
- 23:13I feel like an idiot a lot of the times
- 23:16when I watch their movies.
- 23:17I think they are well-written.
- 23:18I think they are good, but I'm often like,
- 23:21why is this good?
- 23:23Am I too dumb for this?
- 23:24And I'm now just like posturing that I like them
- 23:27because I'm stupid and everyone else does.
- 23:30I really like their writing.
- 23:32I love their dialogue.
- 23:34I'm going to be honest in terms of the acting in this film,
- 23:38I was not blown away.
- 23:39It's just, it's meant to serve a purpose
- 23:42and it's meant to, it works for what this movie is,
- 23:44but none of it like wowed me.
- 23:48Well, it's not a realistic performance film.
- 23:51It's definitely a performance catered
- 23:54to the overall artistic design of the movie.
- 23:59I get that.
- 24:00I just don't know that it necessarily worked for me.
- 24:03But again, the writing is so snappy and so on point,
- 24:06which is what I absolutely love about that.
- 24:09The way they write dialogues.
- 24:10Yeah, that's what I love the most about it.
- 24:11And my favorite Coen Brothers film is still Fargo,
- 24:14which is much more self-serious while still being a comedy
- 24:17and much more, not so much of a cartoon.
- 24:19And having never seen this film before,
- 24:22I think on my initial watch,
- 24:24that didn't click until too late in the film
- 24:26for me to appreciate what was going on.
- 24:29Definitely looking forward to watching it again,
- 24:31be it for this or just on my own,
- 24:33just to really kind of go in there with the right mindset.
- 24:36Cause it wasn't until a little over halfway when, you know,
- 24:39all the shooting starts where I realized,
- 24:41I'm like, oh, I'm watching a cartoon.
- 24:44I kind of feel like because this is a morning episode,
- 24:46we need like morning radio sound effect board,
- 24:49like a toilet flushing right now.
- 24:51And then,
- 24:52wah wah wah.
- 24:54I can go flush the toilet.
- 24:55We'll prank call somebody later.
- 24:56Hell yeah, let's do it.
- 24:57Okay.
- 24:57Prank call Adam.
- 24:58You guys wanna prank Adam?
- 24:59Yes.
- 25:01We'll call him on my phone and he'll just have a call
- 25:03right here.
- 25:04Hey man, is your fridge running?
- 25:07Wait, can you do that more like Dana Carvey in this movie?
- 25:09Oh God, I fucking hated that laugh.
- 25:14Oh man.
- 25:15Oh yeah.
- 25:16Okay, let's just get into it.
- 25:17Dropped in Paradise, 1994.
- 25:20Starring Nick Cage as Bill Furpo,
- 25:22John Lovitz as Dave Furpo,
- 25:23and Dana Carvey as Alvin Furpo.
- 25:25I'm gonna give you a fun fact,
- 25:26just because we were talking about that laugh.
- 25:29Dana Carvey based his character,
- 25:32or his voice for this movie,
- 25:33on one of the producers and a young Mickey Rourke.
- 25:39Somebody from 20th Century Fox had to fly out
- 25:41and tell him to stop doing the voice,
- 25:43and Nicolas Cage told him to keep doing it,
- 25:45so he just kept doing it.
- 25:47I mean, this movie had no rules.
- 25:48There was no adult supervision.
- 25:51Not at all, it's fantastic.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53Oh yeah, there's so many great behind the scenes stories
- 25:58of just these guys fucking off.
- 25:59I'm sure.
- 26:00So this is a movie about three brothers
- 26:03who find themselves in Pennsylvania,
- 26:06robbing a bank, and the robbery is foiled
- 26:09through the kindness of the town.
- 26:12Whomp, whomp.
- 26:14But it gets better, so that's my brief synopsis.
- 26:18That's about right.
- 26:19Whomp, whomp, whomp, whomp.
- 26:21Whomp, whomp, whomp, whomp.
- 26:23Ah.
- 26:25Good morning, Seattle.
- 26:28Oh great.
- 26:33The comedy police are us.
- 26:35The cops.
- 26:36Bad cop.
- 26:37Man, we need to just start with the second half
- 26:39of our podcast, because they're always funnier.
- 26:43Yeah, so in this movie,
- 26:45Nicolas Cage is playing Bill Furpo.
- 26:48He's, I'm guessing, the middle child of the three brothers.
- 26:54John Levitz and Dana Carvey are.
- 26:56In jail.
- 26:57In jail, they are on parole,
- 26:58but they are lifelong criminals.
- 27:01And I think early on, we're kind of led to believe
- 27:04that Nic Cage, you know.
- 27:06Well, he has a checkered past.
- 27:07He has a checkered past, but not as bad.
- 27:10Right, he's tried to atone for it.
- 27:11He finds a wallet and ends up giving it back,
- 27:14but he really struggled because it had 800 bucks in it.
- 27:18He's a manager at some restaurant.
- 27:20I do love the line when he goes to confession
- 27:22about the wallet because he feels bad that he,
- 27:23like he even had thoughts of keeping it.
- 27:25It's like, forgive me, Father, if I have sinned,
- 27:27it's been two weeks since my last confession.
- 27:29And the priest just goes, is that Bill Furpo?
- 27:32It's been five years since you've been in here.
- 27:35Yeah, that was good.
- 27:36Did you guys think that was fucking Paul Schrader?
- 27:39Oh, is it a priest?
- 27:41No, because I don't mentally project him
- 27:43into anything I'm doing anymore.
- 27:45It's like, anymore.
- 27:46I used to, but not anymore.
- 27:48Is this a Slenderman situation?
- 27:48You just see Paul Schrader everywhere you go now.
- 27:50It is a nightmare for me.
- 27:52You're like, is this movie going to be funny?
- 27:54Oh, is that Paul Schrader? No.
- 27:57Yeah, so he's Bill Furpo.
- 28:00Nicolas Cage is just trying to live a straight life.
- 28:04Finds out his brothers are getting released early, early parole.
- 28:09I love Dave's speech at the parole board
- 28:12because he just starts in talking about dinosaurs and pterodactyls
- 28:16and how they fly over their problems and all this.
- 28:21And the parole board is just like, what are is there?
- 28:24Is there a point to this?
- 28:25Just skip to the end. And he's like, OK.
- 28:27And he like mentally fast forwards for a second.
- 28:30He's like, and like the mighty pterodactyl,
- 28:32I will fly above all my problems.
- 28:37It's like, oh, God.
- 28:39Also, both these movies had great parole board scenes.
- 28:42Yeah. Good parole board scenes.
- 28:44Nice parallels again.
- 28:46No, we can talk about this briefly at the end,
- 28:48but there were a lot of weird parallels in these two films.
- 28:51It's like we've been given 64 different versions of the same movie
- 28:56just presented through different eyes.
- 28:58The NCU. Yeah.
- 29:00The New Cage universe.
- 29:02Oh, man.
- 29:04So they get paroled.
- 29:06Yeah, he has to pick them up.
- 29:07I like how one John Lovitz is leaving the prison.
- 29:10He tips one of the guards.
- 29:13Oh, yeah. He just treats it like he's leaving.
- 29:16Yeah. You sell something nice.
- 29:20John Lovitz is just like a chronic liar.
- 29:23Like he never tells the truth.
- 29:25And Dana Carvey plays a kleptomaniac.
- 29:28I mean, he's just stealing something in every scene.
- 29:30Like from the very beginning, he steals the parole board
- 29:34officials like tie pin.
- 29:36Yeah, I don't know.
- 29:37I'm assuming he like shook his hand or like, oh, yeah.
- 29:40Steals all the pen knowing Alvin.
- 29:42He probably hugged him at the end.
- 29:43I was going to say when you get paroled, you get to hug everybody.
- 29:46So that's how it goes.
- 29:47I also I do like when I'm still on the lam thing.
- 29:50So I haven't.
- 29:51Fortunately, we're going to record this in a new spot sensor.
- 29:53Take that cops. Yeah.
- 29:55You'll never take us alive.
- 29:56Coppers. I don't like give them the option.
- 29:59The out. It's like, no, no, please try to take us alive.
- 30:03Well, if the cops in this movie are any indication, they fucking shoot
- 30:07first like regular cops and the last movie, too.
- 30:10Again. Oh, I loved when Alvin just being a kleptomaniac.
- 30:14He tries to steal the toy out of a box of Captain Crunch.
- 30:17Not the sear. It doesn't want to take the whole box.
- 30:19He just wants the toy.
- 30:21Yeah. And it must be terrible having a brother like that around
- 30:25because they're in this town in Pennsylvania
- 30:29and they're getting the materials they need to rob this bank,
- 30:33like ski masks and stuff.
- 30:35And he's just emptying out a box of cereal on the floor
- 30:40just for a plastic piece of shit toy.
- 30:42But then you get like a funny moment where you like takes the toy
- 30:45and like steps to walk away.
- 30:46And it's just like Captain Crunch under his feet.
- 30:49And he sits there, looks at it and then slowly takes another step.
- 30:53And it's like 1994.
- 30:57Oh, yes. That very specific brand of comedy. It is.
- 31:00So, yeah, the two boys are out on parole.
- 31:03So John Lovitz told his mother and offer Bill that, you know,
- 31:09he had this note and it was from another inmate.
- 31:13And they were saying like, oh, check on my daughter.
- 31:17So and so stop story.
- 31:18So they while in town, there's
- 31:22that scene where they make maferbo read the letter.
- 31:27And what is it? If you and if you don't, I will get out of prison
- 31:30and I will rip off your head and shit down. Yeah.
- 31:34And she's crying at how beautiful this letter is.
- 31:37So both very eloquent letter movies.
- 31:40Again, another connection. Yeah.
- 31:42The written word we what I'm saying is we watch the same movie twice. Yeah.
- 31:46But this time with John Lovitz instead of John Goodman.
- 31:50Yeah, we changed Jones. Yeah.
- 31:52That's a John downgrade. Yeah.
- 31:54So, yeah, they go to Pennsylvania because they got this letter.
- 32:00And then while out and about in town,
- 32:04like an Alvin tries robbing someplace like he's taking the money
- 32:07out of the register and then that was in New York.
- 32:11Yeah. In New York.
- 32:12And Bill is like, hey, stop it.
- 32:14And then they get chased by the cops.
- 32:16Nicholas Cage, you know, convinces the cop that he was an undercover cop
- 32:21from the Bronx or something.
- 32:23Lower Queens, lower Queens.
- 32:24And thank you for being the detail guy today. Yeah.
- 32:28Again, so I just between travel and work this week.
- 32:31I just watched this movie at 10 o'clock last night. Yeah.
- 32:34So it hasn't even been 12 hours.
- 32:36Hot and fresh. Yeah, it's all in there.
- 32:38Pretends to be a cop. Long story short, Dave convinces Bill
- 32:42that he left his wallet at the crime scene and the cops are coming to get him.
- 32:46So they run away and they run to Pennsylvania.
- 32:50I'm sure that makes sense. Yeah, I followed.
- 32:53Well, you've seen the movie. Yeah.
- 32:54When does that matter for this podcast?
- 32:57I'm fairly certain our entire audience does not watch these movies.
- 33:01Except for Jiu Jitsu.
- 33:03The number of people have told me they've watched Jiu Jitsu
- 33:05because of our talking about Jiu Jitsu.
- 33:07I think we should get a commission.
- 33:09I think I have just more discerning friends
- 33:12because they are not watching Jiu Jitsu based on what we said.
- 33:16I have a hard time believing you have more discerning friends
- 33:18considering your friends about us.
- 33:19I thought you were going to say friends and I was like, Dick move.
- 33:23So, yes, they go to Paradise, Pennsylvania.
- 33:25Yeah. In pursuit of Sarah, the daughter of this guy,
- 33:29they end up in this bank because there's a girl who works there named Sarah.
- 33:34Sarah Connors.
- 33:36So no, that's that's Terminator.
- 33:37OK, Sarah. Sarah, see something. It's close. Yeah.
- 33:41Connelly in concert. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:43But a different set, different name.
- 33:45Yes, Sarah, but different last name.
- 33:46They go in and it doesn't matter.
- 33:48This character will never be developed.
- 33:50Yeah. It's the girl from Twin Peaks.
- 33:53A different one. A different girl. Yeah.
- 33:55They're in there and then they just like see how fucking robbable
- 33:59this bank is, because obviously this is what Dave brought them down there for.
- 34:04The security guard is 100 years old and is asleep.
- 34:07Yeah. And won't wake up for anything.
- 34:09The cameras aren't plugged in. Yeah.
- 34:11Like the wires are just hanging from the cameras.
- 34:13It's ripe for the plundering.
- 34:16And similar to the last movie, they get there right as like
- 34:21there's a ton of money coming into the bank. Right.
- 34:23Dave is just like, man, check this place out.
- 34:26And Bill's like, it's like, doesn't matter.
- 34:28There's no money in the vault.
- 34:29And right as the door gets kicked in with giant bags of money with like
- 34:32practically as dollar signs on them.
- 34:34Yeah. Bank is re-upped.
- 34:37They got that going for him.
- 34:38So they decide they're going to rob this bank.
- 34:41I do want to talk about that scene, though, because they're driving.
- 34:42Well, Bill gets them out of there and they're driving away from the bank.
- 34:45And Bill just says, if I had a gun, I'd rob that.
- 34:48I'd go back in there and rob the bank right now.
- 34:50And Dave's just like, so Bill, I told you, what if I told you
- 34:54there were some guns in the trunk?
- 34:58And then, you know, because it got like he got the car from a gun runner.
- 35:03So, I mean, there's a high likelihood that there's guns in the trunk.
- 35:07The cage like balls over the side.
- 35:09You're telling me there's guns that trunk.
- 35:10I'm like, telling you where I got it from.
- 35:12I'm like, but you haven't seen them now.
- 35:14And then it opens it and Dana is like, hey, there's guns in the trunk.
- 35:22This movie had its moments.
- 35:24They did like it's not the same like writing style.
- 35:27Also kind of funny that both movies are writer director combinations.
- 35:32So this written by the.
- 35:34Again, the director of this film direct wrote the first two bad boys films.
- 35:39So we're fucking on top. Yeah.
- 35:42They robbed the bank.
- 35:44And we'll just get right through this.
- 35:45They robbed the bank.
- 35:47Then there's another great bank robbery scene where someone like
- 35:50raises their hand and has something to say about how they're robbing the bank.
- 35:53Yeah, for me, this movie, I felt pretty solid on this movie.
- 35:58Then we get to the bank robbery scene and I'm like,
- 36:01I just didn't like it so much.
- 36:02I appreciate what they were doing because like they get in there.
- 36:08They're robbing the bank.
- 36:09But the bank vault is locked because the bank manager is at lunch across the street.
- 36:14So the wife of the bank manager who has explained this to us is taken across.
- 36:20Then Nicolas Cage and Dana Carvey are in the restaurant.
- 36:25And then they have to re declare that it's a robbery,
- 36:28but they have to specify it's a bank robbery.
- 36:31So they take everybody from the restaurant back to the bank.
- 36:35I loved that scene. They didn't want any witnesses.
- 36:38Yeah, because Dana Carvey's like, well, if you leave him here,
- 36:40any one of them call the cops.
- 36:41Yeah. So they escort everyone across the street.
- 36:45And now they just bring everybody into the bank.
- 36:48And it's meanwhile,
- 36:50oh, fucking John Lovitz is telling stories and like coaching people.
- 36:55I'm like, like Lamaze and stuff.
- 36:58I'm like, how did just get through it?
- 37:00I don't understand what Lamaze is.
- 37:01I'm going to say that right now because I'm not a childbearing human yet.
- 37:05It's probably the most PC thing you've ever seen on this podcast.
- 37:11But they bring everybody back to the bank and finally,
- 37:15you know, get the vault open, get the money and leave.
- 37:18As they're leaving town, a blizzard is rolling in.
- 37:21And this is how we get the name trapped in paradise,
- 37:24because now they can't get out.
- 37:26I want to just throw this in here right now.
- 37:28Speaking of the blizzard, my favorite fun fact about this film
- 37:30is because they needed the whole town to be covered in snow.
- 37:33They used seventy five thousand pounds of custom
- 37:37biodegradable potato flakes to add to the snow on the ground.
- 37:41Yeah, it's like Idaho flakes. Yeah.
- 37:43And they were from Idaho. Yeah.
- 37:45When we were watching this, Josie was just like, how are they even trapped?
- 37:49These roads are clear, like they're freshly plowed throughout all the movie.
- 37:52Yeah, the criminals have no problem getting to paradise.
- 37:55Yeah, it's just like all these potato flakes are just the mounds of snow
- 38:00that they've built up to make it look like there was a lot of snow,
- 38:03but it's been plowed.
- 38:04It's like anybody could drive out of there.
- 38:07As Sean said, some criminals from New York whose original idea
- 38:11was it was their idea to rob this bank.
- 38:15John Lovitz and Dana Carvey just got out first and then robbed it.
- 38:18And then when these criminals got out, they went on a little adventure.
- 38:25That scene with the criminals in prison was fucking stupid.
- 38:29Where it's like it's them talking about this whole situation.
- 38:33And they're like, tell the story about your your daughter's bank again.
- 38:36And he tells the story and it's like, hey, did you hear those furpos got out?
- 38:39Well, also, the bank just got robbed. Convenient.
- 38:42Yeah, like, fuck. It was bad.
- 38:44That's absolutely true. It's a bad scene.
- 38:46It's a terrible scene. So much of this is just like,
- 38:50I mean, you get so many scenes in this movie where it's just presentational.
- 38:53It's like, OK, there has to be this plot point.
- 38:57We don't know how to like eloquently get through it.
- 39:00So here is people giving you this story.
- 39:03Yeah, I wrote him for you.
- 39:05Oh, yeah. No, it's it's exposition, maybe.
- 39:07Yeah. Then they went down.
- 39:09Well, they kidnapped Ma Furpo and you get lots of good Ma Furpo
- 39:14being a sassy old lady and annoying the robbers or the criminals.
- 39:19And then they go down to paradise and hijinks.
- 39:22Hijinks do ensue.
- 39:24So after they robbed the bank, they try and get out of paradise,
- 39:27because once you've done a crime, you generally don't want to stay around.
- 39:30There's that scene where Dana Carvey like is just revving the engine
- 39:33because he wants to see how high you can get the needle to go
- 39:35and then just peels out right when they get to the car.
- 39:39Does the classic like drives away when you get to the door?
- 39:42Yeah, twice. So they have a stolen car, go back to their car.
- 39:44But while driving out of town, cop sees them, starts chasing them.
- 39:47They go over a bridge and they get picked up by a good Samaritan
- 39:51going back to paradise, Wedwalk West Isle.
- 39:54But it is the son of the bank manager.
- 39:57Yeah. So then they end up having Christmas Eve dinner with the bank manager
- 40:02and the bank manager's wife.
- 40:04And this is where all the kindness keeps coming out.
- 40:07And it's like they take care of them because they, you know,
- 40:10don't have any luggage or clothing and they give them like clean clothes.
- 40:13They give them their Christmas presents to each other, which are clothes.
- 40:17This isn't my quote for the movie, but this has one of the most
- 40:19just disjointed lines in the film, which is Sarah sees Nick Cage
- 40:24in the living room because she rents a room upstairs.
- 40:26You know, it's like, what are you doing here?
- 40:28And he's just like, I've had a bad night that I'd rather not recount.
- 40:31That dog has three legs. Yeah.
- 40:34Which apparently the dog was just owned by someone in the town
- 40:38who the director saw like spectating one day and they were like,
- 40:42let's get a three legged dog in this movie.
- 40:44So the kindness of the town keeps kind of warming their hearts.
- 40:48Making them want to not take this money.
- 40:50They try to they end up trying to like take the money back
- 40:54and like return it to the bank because Nicholas Cage
- 40:57sees that he still has the bank manager's keys.
- 41:00They fuck up trying to put it back in, end up setting off the alarm
- 41:04and they leave the money at the local pastor's front door
- 41:09and tell him to get it back to the people.
- 41:12And then they run off.
- 41:13I think my favorite part of the end of the movie was just them escaping
- 41:17in the horse and sleigh.
- 41:19It was their third or fourth escaped attempt.
- 41:21Yeah. But now they're as they steal the horse and sleigh
- 41:26from the mentally handicapped person and son of the sheriff
- 41:32who is a deputy. Yeah.
- 41:34And I don't know, like they show him shooting later and he doesn't
- 41:38hit somebody like shoot somebody. Yeah.
- 41:40He saves the day.
- 41:41He knocks the gun out of one of the criminals hands and then shoots
- 41:44the other criminal through the window.
- 41:46And so for somebody who's that cross-eyed being able to shoot straight,
- 41:51that was impressive.
- 41:52I mean, like he literally looked like one of the assholes from Spaceballs.
- 41:57Eyes are crossed. Yeah.
- 41:59I enjoyed it.
- 42:00There's a pretty decent chase sequence where they're on the sleigh
- 42:03and like they're the FBI is doing a low budget
- 42:07Blues Brothers style like pile up behind them.
- 42:09Yeah. Which is kind of fun.
- 42:11I got to say I loved Richard Jenkins as the FBI agent.
- 42:14He's so fucking good. He's a great.
- 42:16What's his name? I tried looking at it.
- 42:18He's a or something. Yeah.
- 42:19What was his first name is like so so Bolba so Bolba.
- 42:23Bolba, Pazer. That's my next D&D character.
- 42:26So Bolba, Wado, you got all the good ones. Yeah.
- 42:29So the town gets the money back.
- 42:32The bad guys get re-arrested.
- 42:36Nicolas Cage and his brothers kind of get off, you know, like the town.
- 42:39Again, much like the last film, the town forgives them.
- 42:42Yeah, it's a Christmas movie. Yeah.
- 42:44Well, like the FBI agents there.
- 42:46OK, there's no money. There's no hard evidence,
- 42:48but there's a town full of people who saw them and they're like, yep,
- 42:51not these guys. They saved the town.
- 42:54The FBI agent also does point out that two of them have broken parole.
- 42:59Well, parole violations is pretty below the FBI.
- 43:04So just nobody seems to care. But again, Christmas movie.
- 43:07Yeah, it's a Christmas movie.
- 43:08I mean, this might be my new go to bad Christmas movie seen as I can't really
- 43:12watch the ref anymore. Thanks to Kevin Spacey.
- 43:14Fuck you, Spacey. I'll keep that in.
- 43:16It's it's cool to say fuck Spacey.
- 43:19That's the movie. Nick Cage. Nick Cage finds love at the end.
- 43:22Yeah. Yeah. By the really boring person with a character who was never developed.
- 43:26Nobody was developed. But again, we said the director had no interest in directing
- 43:29this film without oversight. Nick Cage is wildly all over the place.
- 43:34You see every instant of cageing out in this film.
- 43:38I think this is the most cagey film that we've seen so far.
- 43:41I know he has some other ones that are crazier, but like I made a note of it.
- 43:45It was like, holy fuck. Every scene, every delivery, mid delivery, he will change
- 43:50his candor. Like this is not a consistent character.
- 43:53And he's the straight man. And he's the straight man.
- 43:56There's a scene that's very cagey and it's when they're waiting for the bank key
- 44:00and he just goes key, key. Oh, when's he get back?
- 44:06Or when he's just chasing the bank manager.
- 44:08I've been coming, coming, coming. I do like.
- 44:11The cop is coming after us. The cop is coming after us.
- 44:14Most of my quotes involve him being mad at Dana Carvey.
- 44:17Yeah, I didn't love to the point of remembering any Nicholas Cage stuff.
- 44:22It's like, it was good for what it was.
- 44:24And the performance he brought to the quotes was fine.
- 44:28None of them, I think, made it into like a re quotable sentence for me.
- 44:33For me, like the best quote of the movie is a Dana Carvey quote.
- 44:40And it's just at the very end when Ma Ma Ferbo is like, oh, your brother's going to get hitched.
- 44:46What are you two going to get hitched?
- 44:48And Dana Carvey is just like hitched.
- 44:51We're not even attracted to each other. It's a great line in reference to him and Dave.
- 44:57There's also just another good little interaction when they first get out of prison
- 45:00and you see Dana Carvey, who is clearly not all there.
- 45:04They're driving away and Dana Carvey just in the back seat and ask if they can stop on the way home to get some ring dings and milk.
- 45:10Yeah, and they can just go milk for the kids. Yeah.
- 45:13Ring dings and milk. Oh, sure.
- 45:15Then we'll get some balloons, go to a puppet show.
- 45:18What are you two years old?
- 45:20So my favorite quote came right after that, too.
- 45:23So it's same car situation and then he he's explaining to them how because they're out on parole, he's in charge of them.
- 45:30So he says, so quiet down, my little ones and call me dad.
- 45:36Yeah. Yeah. His performance is very weird in this.
- 45:40It's not super consistent. It's not in line.
- 45:44I feel like with the I would I would say the tone of the movie, but it's all such a fucking mess.
- 45:52Yeah, I think because the director was so hands off on any of the performances, Cage just got to sort of do whatever he wanted.
- 46:00Well, like, according to John Lovett, the director just didn't want to direct and he just kind of told him to do whatever they wanted, which is wild.
- 46:07They're definitely trying to ride on that that high of Nicolas Cage throughout the year.
- 46:13Well, also, this is like Dana Carvey and John Lovett's is like first, I think, first film after leaving SNL.
- 46:19Yeah. And 1994 was a big year for Nick Cage. This is the fourth film, Nick Cage film to be released that year.
- 46:25We had Red Rock West, which was filmed a couple of years earlier, but got released that year.
- 46:30Guardian Test, which we haven't seen. And it could happen to you.
- 46:33And two of those movies we will be discussing again later as they've already made their way to the second round.
- 46:38But yeah, that was trapped in paradise. Yeah, it was a fun movie. I enjoyed watching it.
- 46:44Two weird comedy of errors tying it and tying it to Red Rock West.
- 46:49It's another thing where it's like, all right, a crime has happened. Now I'm going to leave town. Oh, wait, I'm not.
- 46:54I'm trapped here. So, you know, fun times had by all.
- 46:58I think on an initial watch, I think I enjoyed the stupidity of trapped in paradise more, not having grok on to what was going on with Raising Arizona immediately.
- 47:09But I think Raising Arizona is going to be more fun to watch a second time.
- 47:12I would say definitely Raising Arizona through both of my watches.
- 47:17And the Coens are just so they made it such a captivating movie. They did.
- 47:22They got me from the very beginning. They they just hit you with such a great premise.
- 47:29Walking Nicolas Cage in repeatedly, getting his mug shot done.
- 47:34And you see his relationship. It's so big. Everything is so big.
- 47:40It's like Ed is such a hard cop. She's like, turn to the left.
- 47:44Turn left. No. Then next time it's like, you know, she's a little softer than she's crying because her finance broke up with her.
- 47:53Obviously, it's the better movie. Yeah, it is. And I am look that one.
- 47:57I'm so much more looking forward to rewatching and having a more self aware view of it.
- 48:03Yeah. So next episode, we're back on to the serious bracket and we have leaving Las Vegas and the runner, which I don't remember.
- 48:14I think it's a political never heard of her. But I'm kind of excited because I haven't seen leaving Las Vegas.
- 48:20Have you guys? No, I've not. I've never seen a Nicolas Cage movie. That's a lie.
- 48:25You've seen 20. Yeah. How about a little sign off?
- 48:29I love you, Peter. Oh, thank you. Yes. Do I have to say it back?
- 48:35Goodbye, everybody. Good night. And God bless.
- 48:45Hayden, jump down in the comments and tell us how bracket. Yeah.
- 48:49Yeah. Do it in the comments and don't do it to me while I'm trying to sleep. Yeah.
- 48:53Actually, whisper it to him in his sleep. Just that's how it gets in deep. Yeah.
- 48:59Just sneak your way in. Please don't.
