- 1:05here are some of the questions that you might have.
- 1:07Let's find those answers. Chat too soon.
- 1:09Hi, my name is Carter Pretorius and I'm a registered therapist.
- 1:13I'm also neuro divergent myself. Thank you for being here.
- 1:17I would like to address a question that we received about
- 1:21sensory diet. So what Dan put out there into
- 1:25the wild was respect sensory preferences to ease meal time
- 1:29with autistic individuals. And one of the comments was yes
- 1:34I get so much Flack from family and others who don't get why I'm
- 1:37willing to warm up noodles for one kid, let the other only eat
- 1:41raw carrots because cooked ones are gross for him, and why the
- 1:46other one gets to make her own leftover plate how she wants.
- 1:49Instead of everyone eating one supper I made, I make my
- 1:53partner's supper and if the kids want to try it, they do and do
- 1:58not force them. It just feels wrong.
- 2:01So firstly, Jessica has ADHD. Well done and congratulations.
- 2:07You're doing an amazing job and I commend you for doing all of
- 2:11that. And during meal time, I have
- 2:13ADHD too and for me it's really difficult to actually even think
- 2:17about cooking. So for you to be able to do all
- 2:20of that, you're an incredible person.
- 2:22So firstly, I would like to commend you on that.
- 2:27And then I would like to say that that's exactly it, right?
- 2:30So we all have our sensory needs, our differences, our
- 2:35sensory sensitivities. I used to really dislike any and
- 2:40all vegetables. Now I really do like it and I've
- 2:44grown to like it. And that is something that can
- 2:48also change. So our sensory profile can
- 2:50change within the day, within a within a few weeks and within
- 2:54years for sure. So if your kid doesn't eat
- 2:58carrots now, that doesn't mean that they that they won't eat
- 3:00carrots later, but they might not eat it ever.
- 3:04And that's OK too. But there are definitely some
- 3:06ways that we can make it a little bit more fun and engaging
- 3:10for not only our our child, but also ourselves.
- 3:14So one thing that we usually ask us as therapists and clinicians
- 3:18is to bring your child into the process of cooking.
- 3:22So to give them choices, to ask them to choose what they want
- 3:27from a specific list of choices. Of course, we can't make like
- 3:31lasagna in 10 minutes. You know, we give them the
- 3:34choices that are feasible and they can choose because once we
- 3:39feel like we have a choice, it also feels a little bit better
- 3:43because then we're not being told what to do.
- 3:46And I think that's a big thing with neurodivergent individuals.
- 3:49We don't want to be told all the time what to do and what not to
- 3:52do, what to eat, what not to eat.
- 3:53So if we're we're in control, that feels better.
- 3:56And then also to make sure that we make it fun.
- 4:01Our child can help us cook. They can help us maybe put
- 4:05things in the pot if it's safe. And maybe that process makes it
- 4:10a little bit easier for them to also get to know that different
- 4:15sensory tastes and different textures are to be explored if
- 4:21they want to. But it's on their terms more and
- 4:25it's a little bit less might feel less forced than then.
- 4:29So I think that's, that's a good way to make little, you know,
- 4:33faces out of food and, and make it fun can also help.
- 4:38But I think once your child is more in control of the whole
- 4:41process and they feel like, OK, this is something that I can
- 4:44explore with, they feel safer. And that could be one way for
- 4:49for them to to experience more and a variety of things.
- 4:53But if they don't, that's OK. Let's try and expand slowly from
- 4:57what they are interested in eating.
- 4:59So whether it is little chicken Nuggets, we can create like our
- 5:04own chicken Nuggets, we can make it safer and more nutrient,
- 5:07nutritious and we can definitely expand from there.
- 5:11So we can, you know, I'd like maybe add one more vegetable
- 5:17while we're eating chicken Nuggets so we can create like a
- 5:21little face with the chicken Nuggets and broccoli.
- 5:24If they don't like broccoli, let's try something else that's
- 5:27a little bit more bland. So, yeah, I'm really not the
- 5:30person to ask because I don't like cooking myself.
- 5:33But what I do know is what works for my for the kids that I work
- 5:38with is definitely to involve them in the process.
- 5:42So again, I take my hat off to all your parents out there that
- 5:46are trying your best and working with your child's sensory needs.
- 5:51It really is important to create that sensory profile.
- 5:54If you need any help, let me know in the comments section
- 5:57below. I can definitely do a video on
- 5:58that. Thank you for listening and
