- 1:08Speaker 4: incredible Shees on the Money community. It's just greachy. You've
- 1:12Speaker 4: got some favorite money wins to share from the community,
- 1:15Speaker 4: Miss beck say ed you better have some festive broke
- 1:18Speaker 4: tips for us, And we're going to be helping to
- 1:21Speaker 4: answer a juicy money dilemma this week. It's all about
- 1:23Speaker 4: what do you do when your friends, question the ethics
- 1:26Speaker 4: of your investments, and something that you slid into our
- 1:30Speaker 4: dms about Christmas bonuses the festive norm, or just wish
- 1:34Speaker 4: for thinking it is the last Friday before Christmas.
- 1:41Speaker 5: I love Christmas, such a coziness, such a magical energy
- 1:46Speaker 5: in the airge the joys, and you.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Can like everything spells different, everything looks it. Really it
- 1:53Speaker 2: feels different.
- 1:54Speaker 4: It's just such a nice I like this, and I
- 1:56Speaker 4: really like feeling the world.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It's arguably better than Christmas.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Day lead up anticipation. It's like the decorating. I don't know.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I feel like it becomes lots about like friends and family,
- 2:08Speaker 4: and like, I don't like the thing. This is me
- 2:11Speaker 4: being like maybe a little bit of a grinch. No,
- 2:13Speaker 4: I don't want to catch up with you before Christmas.
- 2:16Speaker 4: If you've only just worked out that we haven't seen
- 2:18Speaker 4: each other in six plus months, being like, oh my god,
- 2:22Speaker 4: have you got time before Christmas? I don't know. I
- 2:24Speaker 4: actually don't, Sorry, I don't. It was already six months
- 2:28Speaker 4: since you and I have seen each other, and if
- 2:30Speaker 4: it was the first six months of the year, you
- 2:31Speaker 4: would have let it go another six months so we
- 2:34Speaker 4: can catch up in January February.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Is that cool?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Sure?
- 2:36Speaker 5: Sure, sure, I totally get it, But like, I know,
- 2:43Speaker 5: Calender's bursting us.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I'm so tired. Jess and I have been working our
- 2:47Speaker 4: butts off in the lead up to like going on
- 2:49Speaker 4: Christmas break, Like, I just I don't have time. I
- 2:53Speaker 4: would love to have drinks. Can you just invite me
- 2:55Speaker 4: to drinks, like on a normal Wednesday? Is that okay?
- 2:58Speaker 4: Any other Wednesday, normal Wednesday drinks? Let's let's normalize that.
- 3:03Speaker 4: I completely agree. But what's your favorite festive treat? Like,
- 3:06Speaker 4: what are you making sure you're eating next week?
- 3:09Speaker 2: You go first?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yes, I love a gingerbread. Oh have you made gingerbread?
- 3:14Speaker 6: I have, and I do so I do gingerbread with
- 3:16Speaker 6: real icing piped on it. So it's kind of like
- 3:19Speaker 6: in realizing ginger.
- 3:20Speaker 4: They're so good and gingerbread, Yeah, we know you do.
- 3:25Speaker 4: We basically canceled Jessica last Christmas, right, so like, but
- 3:28Speaker 4: she's on the money. Girls, We were like, will you
- 3:29Speaker 4: bit artsy crafty? So we decided that we're all going
- 3:33Speaker 4: to come to my house and we're going to make
- 3:34Speaker 4: gingerbread houses. But Beck, we got the like pre made
- 3:37Speaker 4: gingerbread houses. You just had to decorate them, and it
- 3:40Speaker 4: kind of became like a competition of everyone decorating there.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Of course there's the.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Best, right, and so like I'm there messing it up.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I think a few ginger Yeah, thank you, she doesn't
- 3:51Speaker 4: mean that. I think a few people's gingerbread houses fell
- 3:55Speaker 4: over before we even began. Structural integrity was not there
- 3:58Speaker 4: exactly your architet, Like the expectations were too high. I
- 4:03Speaker 4: think someone made like a construction site out of there.
- 4:06Speaker 4: So were like, this is what I was to do.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah, like after the demolition, Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 4: It was like it's demo, like it's in right, like
- 4:12Speaker 4: haha anywhere ye. Jess was sitting over in the corner
- 4:16Speaker 4: like carefully piping on her bloody structuring. Yeah, like perfect
- 4:20Speaker 4: flowers of course. Literally everything was symmetrical, and we were
- 4:24Speaker 4: just like, cool, we'll just see ourselves out. Ours look
- 4:27Speaker 4: literally like a dog's breakfast literally, and then Jesses looks
- 4:31Speaker 4: like a little model house. So guess what we didn't
- 4:33Speaker 4: do this year? No gingerbread house, but if.
- 4:37Speaker 6: You're doing one with your friends, because we did a
- 4:39Speaker 6: gingerbread we do a gingerbread house with our friends, I say,
- 4:42Speaker 6: we add the structural integrity test.
- 4:44Speaker 4: So you do, oh yeah, you've seen the TikTok Why
- 4:48Speaker 4: they were all construction sites because jess shook all of
- 4:52Speaker 4: our bloody houses?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Is it earthquake proof? Is it?
- 4:55Speaker 6: You literally just get everyone around the table, you go, oh,
- 4:58Speaker 6: who's the cutest, whatever, who's is the strongest. You do
- 5:00Speaker 6: a little on the table, and you see, it's very fine.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I would our houses fell down except for Jessica.
- 5:07Speaker 5: This is great.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm actually gonna write this down.
- 5:08Speaker 6: It's really it's okay because then if you're if creativity
- 5:11Speaker 6: is not your thing.
- 5:11Speaker 4: You just you go for solid bills. Yes you know,
- 5:14Speaker 4: and yes the rest of our team had neither, and
- 5:19Speaker 4: that's okay too. We were there and we showed up,
- 5:23Speaker 4: and that is all that counts.
- 5:24Speaker 2: All the count.
- 5:25Speaker 5: But it's good to know there are several different categories
- 5:27Speaker 5: that you can wear multiple judging.
- 5:30Speaker 4: What's your favorite treat?
- 5:31Speaker 5: Okay, so I know this is a year round tree.
- 5:33Speaker 5: You can have this whenever you want. But there's something
- 5:35Speaker 5: so like cozy about the Nutmeggy cinnamon e cardamo me.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Are you going to say I'm not I'm seeing custard tart?
- 5:43Speaker 4: Okay, I was about to be like.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Ignog, Like what do you do with it?
- 5:49Speaker 4: It's ra eggs, like you guys are insane.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but like what do you put where do you
- 5:52Speaker 2: put it?
- 5:53Speaker 4: Like? What is it in your mouth?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Like a drink to drink?
- 5:57Speaker 4: It is a legitimate drink from the carton, like you
- 6:01Speaker 4: like milk and you just drink it. You can or
- 6:03Speaker 4: you can make it. I remember I went to a
- 6:05Speaker 4: Christmas party one year. It was like I was in
- 6:07Speaker 4: high school and I went to this girl's house and
- 6:10Speaker 4: she made eggnog and they were like handing it around.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Jes don't give me that face. I didn't know what
- 6:16Speaker 4: it was. And it looked cute. It looks like yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 4: and she had these really cute glass tea cups and
- 6:21Speaker 4: I think it was because her family did eggnog all
- 6:23Speaker 4: the time, and it's like the way you do it. Anyway,
- 6:25Speaker 4: she gives me this thing and I thought it was cute,
- 6:27Speaker 4: and it smells like a custard tart, right like that
- 6:29Speaker 4: smelled like that smell so delicious. And I drank it
- 6:33Speaker 4: and I liked it. I did it did Yeah, it
- 6:35Speaker 4: was Have you tried it? It's actually it's like runny custard,
- 6:38Speaker 4: like it's actually really nice until you realize that the
- 6:41Speaker 4: eggs are raw. Yeah, everything about it just puts me unacceptable.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But if you didn't know, and I handed you a
- 6:47Speaker 4: cute little milkshake in a really cute glass tea cup,
- 6:50Speaker 4: you can drink it.
- 6:51Speaker 5: You gotta have raw egg I imagine I'm unacceptable.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Not on that boat. I'm gonna be honest unacceptable. It's
- 6:59Speaker 4: your favorite.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Treaty obviously Christmas crack actually either the Christmas crack, which
- 7:05Speaker 6: is like my favorite sweet treat.
- 7:06Speaker 4: But for me, there's two things that make Christmas. Sorry,
- 7:09Speaker 4: can I say three things that make Christmas? Christmas? Okay?
- 7:11Speaker 4: So it's fresh cherries, so like a big bowl of
- 7:15Speaker 4: like fresh cherries. I am very lucky. I grew up
- 7:19Speaker 4: on the morning to Mininsula and there's lots of cherry
- 7:21Speaker 4: farms around, and so we would go to a cherry
- 7:23Speaker 4: farm when we're younger and get like the box of cherries,
- 7:26Speaker 4: and so that always reminds me of Christmas. And for
- 7:29Speaker 4: some reason, maybe I don't know when cherry season is,
- 7:32Speaker 4: but like only buy cherries at Christmas.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I was gonna say, it's anyone like cherries.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Cherries, so like it's like a Christmas It is a
- 7:43Speaker 4: Christmas treat. Yeah, like they're the fruity treat. Fresh mangoes, yeah,
- 7:47Speaker 4: fresh fresh mangoes Christmas. And prawns, yeah, big king prawns,
- 7:55Speaker 4: Like you have to shell them yourselves. One year, Mum
- 7:58Speaker 4: and I shelled all of the prawns before Christmas for
- 8:01Speaker 4: everybody because we were like, oh, we're so nice, we
- 8:03Speaker 4: can to shell them all. Yeah, and the next day
- 8:05Speaker 4: you can just have them with Thousand Island dressing. Like
- 8:09Speaker 4: the thousand Island dressing. Anyway, ten out of ten prawns, cherries,
- 8:13Speaker 4: I'm sold for Christmas and a glass of champagne. Such
- 8:17Speaker 4: an uzzy Christmas thing. I love it. Oh, I don't
- 8:19Speaker 4: want winter Christmas, like, don't get me wrong, the idea.
- 8:22Speaker 4: And like we had a friends giving recently and I
- 8:26Speaker 4: did roast turkey, which, by the way, I think I
- 8:28Speaker 4: slayed it. Like I think I did a really good
- 8:30Speaker 4: job because I know turkey is hard to cook because
- 8:34Speaker 4: it goes really dry. But what I did was basically
- 8:37Speaker 4: buff the thing in butter. Yeah, so that's probably why
- 8:39Speaker 4: it tasted good. But turkey's not that good the reason
- 8:42Speaker 4: our turkey, yess, I'm you know, I'm not offended if
- 8:45Speaker 4: you were like me, turkey was so gay. Yeah, it
- 8:48Speaker 4: was well seasoned, like I had lots of seasoning, lots
- 8:50Speaker 4: of spice, there, lots of butter and salt and and
- 8:53Speaker 4: all of that, and I cooked it in chicken stock
- 8:55Speaker 4: to make sure it was extra delicious. But turkey is
- 8:58Speaker 4: not that good. Yeah, ausy of us.
- 9:01Speaker 6: When we do our friends like our friend Christmas friends mess,
- 9:04Speaker 6: we call it, we do just a Wollez Coal's roast chicken.
- 9:10Speaker 4: And call it a like. It's so much easier, and
- 9:13Speaker 4: to be honest, it's really cost effective.
- 9:17Speaker 6: One you don't because the toad like you had, you
- 9:20Speaker 6: went all in, you'd like a big ass like the
- 9:22Speaker 6: time and the space.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It's I wanted to impress you to it did a
- 9:25Speaker 4: great job. Yeah, and then everyone got to take home
- 9:27Speaker 4: leftovers and that was kind of wholesome. But I will
- 9:29Speaker 4: say that like a roast chicken on Christmas, you genius.
- 9:34Speaker 4: You know what you could do? You could pull it
- 9:35Speaker 4: out and put it like on a cute tray, or
- 9:37Speaker 4: you could like pull it out of the bag, break
- 9:40Speaker 4: it up, like get some kitchen scissors, break it up,
- 9:42Speaker 4: like get the drumsticks and stuff and put them on
- 9:43Speaker 4: a really nice plate reheated in the oven with some
- 9:46Speaker 4: foil over the top of it and maybe like put
- 9:48Speaker 4: some you could put water over the top of it
- 9:50Speaker 4: to keep it moist, or like some stock and maybe
- 9:53Speaker 4: some herbs or something. You you know, God's going to
- 9:55Speaker 4: deliberated and it would literally perfume your house. Yes, like
- 10:00Speaker 4: you've done a roast chok on your own.
- 10:01Speaker 2: You guys like a bubble and squeak.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I love a bubble and squeak Christmas Christmas leftovers. Yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 4: that's why you always have to do extra potato exactly
- 10:12Speaker 4: will bubble and squeak. My dad does the best bubble.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just a big mash up of everything that's
- 10:16Speaker 2: left over from Christmas lunch. I'm actually shocked to the core.
- 10:19Speaker 4: What are you doing? Double and squeak traditionally is re
- 10:21Speaker 4: fried potatoes with whatever veggies or like roast meats that
- 10:25Speaker 4: you've got, but like potatoes would be the core of it.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And you kind of either use mashed potatoes like that's
- 10:30Speaker 4: the elite, or like whole potatoes, but you like crush
- 10:32Speaker 4: them a little bit and then put them together in
- 10:35Speaker 4: like little patties and then fry them on the frying pan.
- 10:37Speaker 4: And you would often have them for breakfast the next
- 10:40Speaker 4: morning after like Christmas or after some big event, or
- 10:43Speaker 4: you have lots of like roast leftovers with maybe like
- 10:46Speaker 4: poachy eggs on the top. O the egg makes because
- 10:51Speaker 4: it's a runny egg over the top. Yeah, that's a
- 10:53Speaker 4: great idea. Also, Cuby Mayo, Ah, Cuby Mayo or anything
- 11:00Speaker 4: five stars like five stars five stars. Speaking of five stars,
- 11:04Speaker 4: Miss jessic Ricci, would you like to hear a five
- 11:07Speaker 4: star review that we got this week? Oh? Absolutely credible?
- 11:11Speaker 4: What about you? Beck to you in ye.
- 11:15Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I loved this one. This one's from Carli. She gave
- 11:18Speaker 4: us a five star review and it said changed the
- 11:20Speaker 4: game so cute. Felt so behind in my money journey
- 11:24Speaker 4: before finding this podcast. The girls are the best money cheerleaders.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Jess and Beck make me feel not so alone when
- 11:31Speaker 4: it comes to finance. That's so cute.
- 11:34Speaker 2: That's really sweet.
- 11:35Speaker 4: That's like that I get to read it out and
- 11:37Speaker 4: then you guys get the compliments.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I love it when someone says my name about it.
- 11:46Speaker 4: It's so cute. Cheerleaders, that's so fun. That's set, which
- 11:50Speaker 4: is my favorite thing ever, But let's get into it.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Miss Jessicrici last one before Christmas comes. What money, wins
- 11:57Speaker 4: and confessions have you got from the group? Well rity
- 12:00Speaker 4: this week?
- 12:01Speaker 6: I mean I start off with one from Allison, who
- 12:03Speaker 6: said she bought a tool from Buddings last week. It
- 12:06Speaker 6: was a Christmas present. Five days later it went on
- 12:08Speaker 6: a deal where you got a free battery and charger
- 12:11Speaker 6: with the purchase of the tool. The battery and the
- 12:13Speaker 6: charger are worth four hundred bucks. What she's like, Normally
- 12:17Speaker 6: I'd take the hit, but four hundred dollars of value
- 12:19Speaker 6: is too much to.
- 12:19Speaker 4: And also that like bumps up the present makes it
- 12:22Speaker 4: really good.
- 12:24Speaker 6: She caught up Buddings and they were happy to let
- 12:26Speaker 6: her just return it and rebuy it so she could
- 12:28Speaker 6: get the thing that she wanted.
- 12:29Speaker 4: She said, a huge win for me and my gift recipient.
- 12:31Speaker 4: And never be afraid to ask your kind retail peeps.
- 12:34Speaker 4: That's so great. Be kind to the retail peeps. Is
- 12:37Speaker 4: someone who has done Christmases? Be nice? Why are people
- 12:42Speaker 4: so rude?
- 12:43Speaker 2: I know it's so weird, Okay, what are you angry
- 12:45Speaker 2: with them for?
- 12:46Speaker 4: Also, it says so much more about you than it
- 12:49Speaker 4: does the staff member, even if that staff member is
- 12:52Speaker 4: completely incompetent. I get it. But if you then treat
- 12:55Speaker 4: someone like trash babe, that's on you. I don't care
- 12:58Speaker 4: what they did. If you can't keep your call, if
- 13:00Speaker 4: you can't get your stuff together, looks like you need
- 13:02Speaker 4: some therapy. That's true. Absolutely.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Next, I've got a money in from Elisa who said
- 13:08Speaker 6: she found a handbag with all of the stuff in
- 13:10Speaker 6: it in a shopping center car park. Both the center
- 13:13Speaker 6: management and the police station were closed, so she took
- 13:16Speaker 6: it home and waited for the phone, which was inside,
- 13:18Speaker 6: to ring. Two hours later, a call came through from
- 13:21Speaker 6: this handbag. It was someone's son. He picked up the
- 13:24Speaker 6: bag and its contents, and he gave her a hundred
- 13:26Speaker 6: dollars for I thought it was really sweet, and as
- 13:29Speaker 6: someone who has left there purse somewhere before, like.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Brook did that literally a couple of weeks ago from
- 13:34Speaker 4: our team, she left her whole handbag on the floor
- 13:36Speaker 4: at a restaurant. She went back and she was like, oh,
- 13:38Speaker 4: it was fine. I'm like, how are you so chill
- 13:40Speaker 4: about this? Like I'd be losing my mind. I fee
- 13:43Speaker 4: good wholesome people. I was at office works the other
- 13:46Speaker 4: day actually, and I found a phone just like I
- 13:49Speaker 4: was like perusing the aisles and there was just an
- 13:51Speaker 4: iPhone sitting there. And it's that awkward. Okay, I can
- 13:55Speaker 4: see an iPhone. I can see it somebody's it's got
- 13:57Speaker 4: like a cover on it. If I pick this up
- 14:00Speaker 4: and I walk it to like the front, is the
- 14:02Speaker 4: owner of it going to see me with it and
- 14:04Speaker 4: think I'm stealing it?
- 14:06Speaker 1: I know.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I get so scared of that too, and like.
- 14:08Speaker 4: I'm trying to do the right thing here, Like I'm
- 14:10Speaker 4: not going to steal someone's iPhone. I've just found it
- 14:12Speaker 4: on a shelf, but I also know I'm not going
- 14:13Speaker 4: to leave it on the shelf because not everyone is honest.
- 14:16Speaker 4: So I'm like, I'm going to take this to the front.
- 14:18Speaker 4: So I do. I don't know if other people do this,
- 14:20Speaker 4: but I do this awkward like swipe no, no, no,
- 14:23Speaker 4: I like, pick it up, but hold it. I'm not
- 14:26Speaker 4: trying to I'm not trying to put this in my
- 14:28Speaker 4: pocket or hide this from you. Ha ha ha ha
- 14:32Speaker 4: like and said, oh, that's mine. I did it the
- 14:36Speaker 4: other day at the swimming pool. I was at the
- 14:38Speaker 4: pool and I just come out of the family changing
- 14:40Speaker 4: area and someone had left their sunglasses in there and
- 14:43Speaker 4: I saw them and picked them up and was like,
- 14:46Speaker 4: when you see a pair of sunglasses that are prescription sunglasses,
- 14:49Speaker 4: you can immediately tell that their prescription. And I was like, ooh,
- 14:51Speaker 4: someone's going to be mad. So I picked them up
- 14:53Speaker 4: and like, I'm holding towels under my arm and like
- 14:56Speaker 4: we carry a basket and I'm holding the sunglasses and
- 14:59Speaker 4: this woman comes around the corn she goes, they're mine,
- 15:01Speaker 4: and I was like, oh, yeah, I just found that.
- 15:03Speaker 4: And I felt like I was like I've been called
- 15:05Speaker 4: out or something, but in reality, I'd pulled them out
- 15:07Speaker 4: to bring them to reception as I was leaving, like
- 15:09Speaker 4: I don't want you prescription sunglasses, so like make this
- 15:12Speaker 4: awkward small chat and I'm like, oh, yeah, I noticed
- 15:14Speaker 4: that they were prescription ha ha ha. Like I was
- 15:16Speaker 4: gonna hand them in they would have been expensive, and
- 15:18Speaker 4: she's like looks at me. She's like, yeah, they were expensive,
- 15:20Speaker 4: And I'm thinking, do you think I'm stealing these?
- 15:22Speaker 2: What are you going to do with prescription?
- 15:24Speaker 4: We were also like I wouldn't steal these totally. Oh anyway,
- 15:28Speaker 4: that just gave me a lot of anxiety. So then
- 15:30Speaker 4: when I found the phone, I'm like, here we go again.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Over handing it in. It's the right thing to do.
- 15:36Speaker 6: We those of us who leave things places, appreciate all your.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Good things happened to good people. As from our team says,
- 15:43Speaker 4: I used that on an Instagram post the other day.
- 15:45Speaker 4: She's like, you copied me because it's in her Instagram bio.
- 15:48Speaker 4: But good things do happen to good people. They do,
- 15:51Speaker 4: absolutely do. Go bigger a men.
- 15:54Speaker 6: Next, what am I win from Holly who said it's
- 15:55Speaker 6: a non money money win for me. I love this
- 15:58Speaker 6: since I'm now on top of my phone finanswers her
- 16:01Speaker 6: brother who used to be the money we was in
- 16:03Speaker 6: the family and Holly was the money mess and his
- 16:06Speaker 6: girlfriend asked her to create a budget for them. So
- 16:10Speaker 6: she created a whole spreadsheet and you know that with
- 16:13Speaker 6: the cash flow system. And she said a year ago,
- 16:15Speaker 6: I just never would have been able to do that.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That's really good.
- 16:17Speaker 4: It's so cool to be able to do it for
- 16:19Speaker 4: someone else, be for real.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Spreading the good word, the disciples, reging, spreading the shees
- 16:24Speaker 6: on the buddy words.
- 16:25Speaker 4: I heard that colts worked really well for multi level
- 16:28Speaker 4: marketing business, and I thought, why reinvent the wheel? We
- 16:32Speaker 4: too could have a cult, but we were not very
- 16:34Speaker 4: good at it. So we're actually just like telling people
- 16:37Speaker 4: that they can do whatever they want with their financial freedom.
- 16:40Speaker 4: We really need to create a product to keep them
- 16:42Speaker 4: in the cult. Yes, he used to shot that one. Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 6: Next, I've got a money in from Emma, who said
- 16:47Speaker 6: it's her first time sharing a money in. She bought
- 16:50Speaker 6: a walking pad treadmill for her work from home at
- 16:52Speaker 6: desk and it was one hundred and twenty dollars on Facebook.
- 16:56Speaker 6: Marketplace in retails for two hundred and thirty. It was
- 16:59Speaker 6: also her first time using Marketplace, and she said she's
- 17:01Speaker 6: officially converted and bonus points it's pink and cute.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Oh how good that is cute? And mine's dying. So
- 17:09Speaker 4: I'm gonna look at the same money. It's not going
- 17:13Speaker 4: to cost you one hundred and twenty dollars. That looks
- 17:15Speaker 4: spinner does.
- 17:16Speaker 6: The next time, money went Alexandra, who said money win.
- 17:19Speaker 6: The theme for my works Christmas party last week was errors,
- 17:22Speaker 6: So obviously I went in my money making error dressed
- 17:27Speaker 6: as a dollar bill.
- 17:30Speaker 4: You thought I was going she dresses and actually quite
- 17:33Speaker 4: disappointed with this, which era would you have gone as?
- 17:36Speaker 4: What would I have gone?
- 17:37Speaker 1: As?
- 17:38Speaker 2: I keep hearing error like the error.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Sorry, yeah, Jessica, I'm thinking like you know, like era error.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you're not going to make that.
- 17:52Speaker 6: Well, Alexander went in her money making error. She dresses
- 17:55Speaker 6: a million dollar bill because girl is trying to manifest
- 17:57Speaker 6: and low and behold.
- 17:59Speaker 4: She won best Oh my god, gating rights.
- 18:02Speaker 6: She won a certificate with a little fifty dollars voucher
- 18:05Speaker 6: and she said her money making costume really did make
- 18:07Speaker 6: her money.
- 18:08Speaker 4: That's actually so good.
- 18:10Speaker 6: Peak of the winning costume, of course, she said, it's
- 18:12Speaker 6: bleary as hell, but this was when I was strutting
- 18:13Speaker 6: my stuff on stage.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Look at her. What a queen. Okay, I would have
- 18:17Speaker 4: You got to go find the fam absolute, absolutely win.
- 18:21Speaker 4: My husband actually went to his work Christmas party last no,
- 18:24Speaker 4: not last week, a couple of weeks ago. Oh yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 4: and he did you see this on social medias so funny?
- 18:30Speaker 4: The theme was legends. Yeah, so that was it, so
- 18:33Speaker 4: you could go as any legend you wanted to. And
- 18:35Speaker 4: my husband, obviously wig and all, dressed up as Raygun. Honestly,
- 18:41Speaker 4: the night before his Christmas party, we were on YouTube.
- 18:44Speaker 4: He was practicing the dance moves.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I love that, and.
- 18:48Speaker 4: He looked greatly. The wig looked very real, Thank you.
- 18:52Speaker 4: It was twelve dollars on Amazon. You great. He didn't
- 18:55Speaker 4: come home with it, though. Someone went home with a
- 18:57Speaker 4: little ponytail wig. Someone. Do you want Lucky keep it? Yeah?
- 19:01Speaker 4: You don't want that one hanging around to you? No?
- 19:03Speaker 4: Absolutely not.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Lastly, this week, I've got a money win from Caitlin,
- 19:06Speaker 6: who said she purchased a one past subscription on Black Friday.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Or don't even I did too well. I read this
- 19:12Speaker 4: one because I sent it to you.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and you.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Said you got to do this. So sorry to Sideline there.
- 19:17Speaker 4: So we clearly talk about money wins on the podcast. Yes,
- 19:20Speaker 4: we also just text each other all week about money wins. Yes,
- 19:24Speaker 4: like our text, I'm like, oh my god, did you
- 19:26Speaker 4: see so, Jess. I'm not gonna spoil it, but did
- 19:29Speaker 4: you see the one past one? Did you see what
- 19:31Speaker 4: you can get?
- 19:31Speaker 6: Oh?
- 19:32Speaker 2: So's one.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I'll explain.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Sure, we'll get there.
- 19:34Speaker 6: Oh, let me read Kaitlyn's first and the we'll come
- 19:35Speaker 6: back around. So Caitlyn said she purchased the one past
- 19:37Speaker 6: subscription on Black Friday. Which means it was fifty percent
- 19:40Speaker 6: off half price. She's used it twice since she purchased
- 19:43Speaker 6: it with two discounts, she said, so her Christmas shopping
- 19:46Speaker 6: is officially done, parcels are on the way, and she's
- 19:48Speaker 6: already saved ten bucks using the.
- 19:50Speaker 4: One Pass in those two times. So good. And I
- 19:52Speaker 4: think the annual membership was like a forty dollars. Yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 4: so it's forty dollars on sale, but it was like
- 19:57Speaker 4: eighty dollars full price to like join one right, So
- 20:00Speaker 4: one Pass this is not sponsored by the way, but
- 20:03Speaker 4: I'm about to talk about it like it's an ad.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I know someone at one Pass. I am here to
- 20:08Speaker 4: sell this to you, right, Like I think it's great.
- 20:11Speaker 4: So one Pass is like the rewards platform that the
- 20:14Speaker 4: people who own Kmart and Bunnings and office works and
- 20:20Speaker 4: like a whole heap of other businesses own. So it's
- 20:23Speaker 4: owned by West Farmers, right, So they've created this rewards
- 20:26Speaker 4: platform and they obviously want heaps of people to join,
- 20:29Speaker 4: So it's in collaboration with Flybys who are in I
- 20:33Speaker 4: want to say cohoots with West Farmers. So like it's like, oh,
- 20:37Speaker 4: that's why you can get Flybys points at literally all
- 20:40Speaker 4: of those stores, plus I believe coals, so that's a
- 20:43Speaker 4: money when to begin with. But when you sign up
- 20:46Speaker 4: to one Pass, you get free shipping on like your
- 20:50Speaker 4: Camart purchases. There's like a minimum price threshold, but it's
- 20:53Speaker 4: not much, so you get free shipping on your like
- 20:55Speaker 4: Camart target, I believe price line all of these purchases, right,
- 20:59Speaker 4: which is money win. And I've already made my money
- 21:02Speaker 4: back from online purchases because like how many times do
- 21:04Speaker 4: you want to order something on Kmart? But like I'm
- 21:07Speaker 4: not paying ten dollars for ship and land Camart when
- 21:09Speaker 4: the item was ten dollars, like that not happening free.
- 21:13Speaker 4: And my favorite part because I have decided that I
- 21:16Speaker 4: am now in my points hacking era. If I went
- 21:18Speaker 4: to that costume party, just I would have gone as
- 21:21Speaker 4: a Flybys card. But you get five times points whenever
- 21:25Speaker 4: you're signed into one Pass, so instead of just getting
- 21:27Speaker 4: one point five.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Ah and then those points eventually yeah, like you can
- 21:34Speaker 5: the money.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Off or use them in the rewards store, So like
- 21:36Speaker 4: that's where I got my kit. Such a good deal
- 21:39Speaker 4: and like five times points it makes no business sense,
- 21:43Speaker 4: like in my head, like they're losing money on this,
- 21:45Speaker 4: but it's not even like a promo when you join.
- 21:47Speaker 4: It's just like if you're a one past member. That's
- 21:50Speaker 4: that's the bonus you get it. It just happens every time.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Okay, anyway, one pass call me. I would love to
- 21:58Speaker 4: talk to you about working together in twenty twenty five.
- 22:01Speaker 4: That's my pitch. I could talk about it more, but
- 22:03Speaker 4: you haven't paid, so that seems fair. Yeah, it's the
- 22:07Speaker 4: sales still under Sorry, can't talk about it anymore, can't. Sorry?
- 22:13Speaker 2: The show?
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah, call me Jess? Is that all it?
- 22:17Speaker 2: Surance? I love that?
- 22:19Speaker 6: All right?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Beck, what have you got to bring to the table?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Any festive broke tip?
- 22:23Speaker 5: I do have some festive broke tips, so I'd like
- 22:26Speaker 5: to say that all of these are festive. So first
- 22:28Speaker 5: I'm gonna go with one from Beck great name, who
- 22:30Speaker 5: says this will be applicable for any parents who have
- 22:33Speaker 5: heaps of toys for their kids, likely gifted by other
- 22:37Speaker 5: people or just ones you have lying around the house.
- 22:39Speaker 5: So when kids are young, they tend to gravitate towards
- 22:41Speaker 5: the same toys, and all of the toys get forgotten about.
- 22:43Speaker 5: My sister in law took the toys they've never played
- 22:45Speaker 5: with girls two and five and re wrapped them for
- 22:49Speaker 5: their birthday and they don't remember because they're kids, and
- 22:51Speaker 5: they loved the toys, and now they're playing with it
- 22:53Speaker 5: because honestly, they have so many toys. I reduces waste
- 22:56Speaker 5: and money, and I think it's really cool. I think
- 22:58Speaker 5: it's a great idea if you do it for Christmases
- 23:00Speaker 5: for other kids, or if you Yeah, I feel like
- 23:03Speaker 5: if you've got if you've got kids yourself and you
- 23:05Speaker 5: have like and they're just not touching all these other toys,
- 23:07Speaker 5: they're not going to notice it. Lowkey genius, and then
- 23:10Speaker 5: you wrap them up, you give them to other kids
- 23:12Speaker 5: in the family or friends or whatever.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I just think it's a great idea.
- 23:15Speaker 4: One of great girlfriends for her kid's first birthday. You
- 23:18Speaker 4: know those ride on cars, got in one of those
- 23:21Speaker 4: cute It was so cute. It was this like fake
- 23:24Speaker 4: obviously I'm Mercedes g Wagon, so cute. He cried because
- 23:29Speaker 4: he was one. He thought it was really scary. He
- 23:31Speaker 4: didn't like it, so they put it back in the
- 23:33Speaker 4: box and gave it to him when he turned to
- 23:34Speaker 4: and he loved it. That's so jealous. I think that's
- 23:38Speaker 4: so smart. It's so literally so smart. They were like, oh,
- 23:41Speaker 4: we thought he'd really like it, but he didn't, so
- 23:43Speaker 4: we're just going to give it to him next year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, honey,
- 23:47Speaker 4: we're really.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Clever and it's reducing waste, yeah, which I really like that.
- 23:52Speaker 5: The next one comes from Emma, and it does lead
- 23:54Speaker 5: me into my own but you'll see why. So Emma
- 23:57Speaker 5: messaged me to say that she saw some cute little
- 23:59Speaker 5: houses that came up and didn't buy them at the time.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Then on the weekend realized she could make them from
- 24:04Speaker 5: polystyrene foam that had come with a package that she
- 24:06Speaker 5: had bought just like random other package. So she'd used that.
- 24:10Speaker 5: She'd used the blocks and corners and glued them together
- 24:12Speaker 5: with the hot glue gun, and then for the real
- 24:15Speaker 5: broke tip, she got some mist tint paint from Bunnings
- 24:17Speaker 5: four dolls for a sample, pot got some baking powder
- 24:20Speaker 5: different to buy carb about three dollars from Coals, added
- 24:22Speaker 5: some of the baking powder to the paint, which is
- 24:25Speaker 5: which is like some chemical.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Reaction Starrett looks like render gray exactly exactly.
- 24:31Speaker 5: And so basically she made these like little houses and
- 24:34Speaker 5: they look ceramic. I think she was going for. She
- 24:39Speaker 5: did send us photos and she also sent us a
- 24:40Speaker 5: photo me wreath that she had made just literally from
- 24:46Speaker 5: going for a walk around the neighborhood.
- 24:49Speaker 4: So this is the wreath that's really cute. Do you
- 24:52Speaker 4: want me? Can I put this anywhere?
- 24:53Speaker 6: Can?
- 24:54Speaker 4: Yeah, We'll put it in the Facebook group.
- 24:55Speaker 5: And then the little houses are really very cute, so.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Fun little DIY project.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Absolutely, And why that leads me to my own broke
- 25:09Speaker 5: tip is it's very I feel like Christmas decorations. Of course,
- 25:14Speaker 5: gifts and stuff can be d I, but I'm speaking
- 25:17Speaker 5: decorations because I didn't realize how they just add up
- 25:20Speaker 5: because like you buy I don't know, like you buy
- 25:22Speaker 5: like a ten dollar like string of fairy lights here,
- 25:25Speaker 5: you buy like a four dollar pack of baballs here,
- 25:27Speaker 5: It's like it really starts adding up very quickly. Anyway,
- 25:30Speaker 5: I'm going to be doing a craft to night with
- 25:33Speaker 5: my partner and her sister and we're going to just
- 25:36Speaker 5: be like making ball balls from scratch like that.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Pa.
- 25:40Speaker 5: I did make one yesterday that was like a love
- 25:42Speaker 5: heart with like you know, when you like put little
- 25:44Speaker 5: papers to make it look three d oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 25:47Speaker 5: just one of those little ballball just get like string.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I don't know how much string is, like five cents,
- 25:52Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't think.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I don't know. Just always it's anything this well, still
- 25:56Speaker 4: five cents, I don't think. So what do we use
- 25:58Speaker 4: five cents?
- 25:59Speaker 2: Is for good question?
- 26:00Speaker 4: Don't even buy lollies at the shop anymore.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I know it's discussing what is this?
- 26:05Speaker 4: They just go into my money tin five cents.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Yes, one day they'll be thirty cents, yeah, one day.
- 26:12Speaker 4: But it will never happen. I'm sorry, I don't know.
- 26:15Speaker 4: I don't have time to explain the concept of inflation.
- 26:17Speaker 4: But that won't happen. Sorry, bye.
- 26:20Speaker 2: But anyway, even tinsel, you know, you get like long,
- 26:22Speaker 2: you just like cut it off.
- 26:23Speaker 4: It's as unnecessarily expensive.
- 26:25Speaker 2: It is why it got to be so expensive.
- 26:27Speaker 4: You could make pomp pom ones. Yeah, yes, so cute.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Arguably, like you know those little like straw cleaners that
- 26:33Speaker 5: they call pipe cleaner. Sorry, make a star out of that.
- 26:37Speaker 5: I think the entire tree. And also we're not looking
- 26:39Speaker 5: at it up close. We're just seeing the vibe of
- 26:41Speaker 5: the tree most of the time.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Sorry, the vibe of the tree is high because everything
- 26:44Speaker 4: on it was handmade.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Handmadely, I give you a couple more, please, please please.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Paper chains are really cute. You cut them into like
- 26:53Speaker 6: the long and you loop them together. Could you do
- 26:55Speaker 6: any color and paper? Also, if you want to make
- 26:58Speaker 6: your own little ornaments, it's really good. You just do
- 27:01Speaker 6: look it up on the internet. But like flour, water, salt,
- 27:03Speaker 6: like a basic kind of plato air, dry clay texture,
- 27:06Speaker 6: roll it out cookie cutters and then you can.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Paint them or you can leave.
- 27:10Speaker 2: That's cute.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Also very cute because you would do like poor Prince
- 27:16Speaker 4: in love hearts. Yes, so really good.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:19Speaker 5: And if you have kids, I feel like it's a
- 27:20Speaker 5: fantastic way to get them to because I remember when
- 27:22Speaker 5: I was a kid. It's exciting when the Christmas treat
- 27:25Speaker 5: but it's also like after like an hour of meticulously
- 27:29Speaker 5: it's just like it can be boring.
- 27:31Speaker 2: So it's exciting. If you tell the kids we're going
- 27:33Speaker 2: to make them, then I don't know.
- 27:34Speaker 4: It's just my sister it does that and gets the
- 27:37Speaker 4: kids to do the wrapping paper. So she buys big
- 27:39Speaker 4: rolls of Butcher's paper and then the kids decorated or
- 27:41Speaker 4: like walk across it with their feet and paint and
- 27:44Speaker 4: like it's very exciting. It's really sweet. I love that anyway,
- 27:47Speaker 4: That's it for me, deary decoration. It's full of are
- 27:51Speaker 4: you feeling? Like everywhere on socials and even in my
- 27:54Speaker 4: friendship groups, I feel like everybody's reverting to more of
- 27:58Speaker 4: a traditional Christmases than it, Like we're not going for
- 28:01Speaker 4: the big shiny tree anymore. We're going for like the thoughtful,
- 28:05Speaker 4: handmade tree.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yes, is that?
- 28:07Speaker 4: Am I? I feel like I'm the only one really
- 28:10Speaker 4: noticing this, And maybe it's because, like I'm very into economics,
- 28:13Speaker 4: but this is maybe overlay sidestep. Did you know that
- 28:17Speaker 4: during times of economic uncertainty this is just me being
- 28:21Speaker 4: a little bit of nerd, people will revert back to
- 28:23Speaker 4: traditional ways of doing things because it feels stable.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Yeah, it's so really interesting TikTok about the rise of
- 28:29Speaker 6: the tradwife and like the narrowsmith of it all and
- 28:31Speaker 6: how that was potentially tied back to it, which is
- 28:33Speaker 6: so interesting.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Yeah, like we're all just looking for a little bit
- 28:36Speaker 4: of stability, yeah, when we want something a little bit
- 28:38Speaker 4: more wholesome, a little bit more stable. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 28:41Speaker 4: I feel cold out because I literally was like, Oh,
- 28:45Speaker 4: I love my tree, but is it meaningful enough? Should
- 28:47Speaker 4: we be doing more like homemade, handmade stuff on here?
- 28:51Speaker 4: But anyway, that's means someone too, It's meaningful. Thank you,
- 28:54Speaker 4: Thank you. Let's go to a really quick break because
- 28:56Speaker 4: I want to get into the flip side of this
- 28:58Speaker 4: episode really quickly, because we're going to be talking about
- 29:01Speaker 4: what do you do if your friend questions the ethics
- 29:03Speaker 4: of your investments? Imagine if you just said the pub
- 29:05Speaker 4: beck having your nice soda water and someone's like, I'm
- 29:08Speaker 4: your investment's ethical awkward? But how do you have that conversation?
- 29:14Speaker 4: And you slid into our dms? This week we're going
- 29:17Speaker 4: to be talking about our Christmas bonus. Is the festive
- 29:19Speaker 4: norm or are they just wishful thinking? So don't go anywhere.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Welcome back everyone. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 29:30Speaker 4: money dilemma. Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma
- 29:36Speaker 4: you just can't solve that. She's on the Money Team
- 29:39Speaker 4: is here to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas,

- 29:50Speaker 4: you might just find yourself on the show. Now, let's
- 29:53Speaker 4: take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Hi, she's on the money team. I've been on my
- 29:59Speaker 7: investing gen for a while now. I dove in head
- 30:02Speaker 7: first before I even knew an ETF was, and bought
- 30:04Speaker 7: shares in a few different things, including a mining company
- 30:07Speaker 7: and some banks because I saw them as safe bets.
- 30:11Speaker 7: I'm now a bit wiser and transitioning to ETFs, but
- 30:14Speaker 7: I'm also considering purchasing an investment property in the near future.
- 30:18Speaker 7: When I try to talk about investing with my friends,
- 30:20Speaker 7: they look at me as though I'm a horrible person.
- 30:23Speaker 7: They think it's unethical to be investing this way, especially
- 30:26Speaker 7: regarding an investment property, and while I understand where they're
- 30:29Speaker 7: coming from, I personally disagree. I've worked insanely hard and
- 30:33Speaker 7: made a lot of sacrifices to get where I am financially.
- 30:35Speaker 7: But am I wrong for my investment choices? Do you
- 30:39Speaker 7: have any advice for discussing investments with people who give
- 30:42Speaker 7: you a hard time because they don't agree with your
- 30:44Speaker 7: level of ethical tolerance?
- 30:46Speaker 4: It's an awkward one. I talk about this all the
- 30:50Speaker 4: time on the podcast, because I get messages and people
- 30:53Speaker 4: going the what's a good ethical investment? And ethical to
- 30:57Speaker 4: you back might be very different to what ethical to
- 31:00Speaker 4: Jess is And unfortunately in Australia, it's not like organic.
- 31:04Speaker 4: And I've said this before, but like you can go
- 31:06Speaker 4: to the shops right beck, and you can go to
- 31:08Speaker 4: the organic section if you really want to spend an
- 31:10Speaker 4: arm and a leg. So you're going to go to
- 31:12Speaker 4: the organic section and you'll see that things are certified organic,
- 31:16Speaker 4: which means they had to go through this rigorous testing
- 31:19Speaker 4: process of like do they do this, this, this and this,
- 31:22Speaker 4: and then if they pass all those tests, they get
- 31:24Speaker 4: a big tick and they get to put the sticker
- 31:25Speaker 4: of I'm a certified organic product on there. Right, that
- 31:28Speaker 4: does not exist for ethical in Australia. Ethical is just
- 31:31Speaker 4: a word like I could call it ethical and you
- 31:34Speaker 4: go the it's a tobacco company and I go, yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 4: but like have you seen their pay structure? They really
- 31:40Speaker 4: look after their team, Like okay, that might be your
- 31:43Speaker 4: level of ethical. So it's an interesting conversation to have
- 31:48Speaker 4: with people because what you accept is very different to
- 31:51Speaker 4: what I might accept, which is very different to what
- 31:54Speaker 4: you know, Jess might accept, and that's cool. That's why
- 31:57Speaker 4: we actually love having these conversations because we are so diverse.
- 32:00Speaker 4: But just what would you do if I turned around
- 32:03Speaker 4: and maybe not me, because I feel like, be like what,
- 32:08Speaker 4: sit down, shut up? Be What if you're at brunch
- 32:10Speaker 4: and one of your friends was like, oh, you want
- 32:12Speaker 4: to buy an investment property, Jess, Yeah, that's unethical.
- 32:16Speaker 6: I think investment properties specifically are very polarizing as an investment, Like,
- 32:21Speaker 6: I think it's less so I can see that, you know,
- 32:24Speaker 6: mining and things might also be somewhat controversial, but I
- 32:27Speaker 6: think all the things that our listener listed, the property,
- 32:30Speaker 6: the investment property is probably the most you know, talked
- 32:33Speaker 6: about one in the group because I think that people
- 32:36Speaker 6: are very divided on this. Like we've seen it in
- 32:38Speaker 6: our comments, We've seen it in other groups and other places.
- 32:41Speaker 6: People feel very strongly one way or the other, and
- 32:45Speaker 6: it really does come down to your personal compass. I think,
- 32:48Speaker 6: like my perspective on it is, I'm a renter. If
- 32:52Speaker 6: people didn't have investment properties to rent out, I would be.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Hopeless, do you know what I mean?
- 32:57Speaker 6: So on some level I think that it's ethical the
- 33:00Speaker 6: discussion that a lot of people have is around people
- 33:02Speaker 6: who have ten properties then you know, driving up housing prizes,
- 33:06Speaker 6: driving you know, people like you and mebeck out of
- 33:08Speaker 6: the property market because they've driven the prices up so
- 33:11Speaker 6: high we can't afford them because maybe they're using their equity.
- 33:13Speaker 4: Or blah blah blah. And I do kind of agree
- 33:16Speaker 4: with that side of the argument.
- 33:18Speaker 6: I think, God, I don't want to get too much
- 33:20Speaker 6: into the politics of it all, but I think there's
- 33:22Speaker 6: more regulation to be done, particularly around like overseas investment
- 33:26Speaker 6: and properties that don't have anybody living in them and
- 33:29Speaker 6: things like that. I think, like as a whole, we
- 33:31Speaker 6: need people to invest in property because tenants need to
- 33:33Speaker 6: be able to live somewhere, Like that's the case for me.
- 33:37Speaker 6: And I think it's hard because if someone does have
- 33:40Speaker 6: a portfolio of ten properties, at the same time, I
- 33:43Speaker 6: want to acknowledge that they've obviously hopefully worked really hard
- 33:46Speaker 6: to get them and like put themselves in what they
- 33:49Speaker 6: think is a good financial position. And I don't really
- 33:51Speaker 6: want to lack be like you're a bad person either,
- 33:54Speaker 6: because if that was me, I'm sure i'd feel a
- 33:57Speaker 6: lot of pride and enjoy in the fact that I'd
- 33:58Speaker 6: done that. Yeah, I think the ethical issue doesn't necessarily
- 34:02Speaker 6: the responsibility of it doesn't necessarily come down to the
- 34:05Speaker 6: individual investor. And maybe that's a naive opinion, but I think,
- 34:09Speaker 6: like my perspective on the ethics of it is it
- 34:11Speaker 6: needs to be more regulated from a government point of view.
- 34:15Speaker 4: Agreed. I think it is a very complex wabit of
- 34:20Speaker 4: ethical and economic circumstances that come together to have this conversation.
- 34:27Speaker 4: And maybe we've done an episode on this before and
- 34:31Speaker 4: we can link it in the show notes so that
- 34:32Speaker 4: you can deep dive into it more. But I think
- 34:34Speaker 4: it's actually a bigger, broader conversation. So there's obviously a
- 34:39Speaker 4: number of different arguments, and like I would hope that
- 34:43Speaker 4: as she's on the money, we talk about them pragmatically.
- 34:45Speaker 4: I am a property investor and I don't see that
- 34:49Speaker 4: as inethical or unethical for me to engage in. But
- 34:53Speaker 4: I also think it comes back to my own morals
- 34:55Speaker 4: and my own ethics and the way that I run
- 34:57Speaker 4: my life.
- 34:58Speaker 6: Right.
- 34:58Speaker 4: I think that there are a lot of people in
- 35:01Speaker 4: this world who are like me, But then there are
- 35:03Speaker 4: a lot of people who put the onus on the
- 35:06Speaker 4: tenant and that to me is not ethical. So, like,
- 35:09Speaker 4: if I'm going to lease out my property, I think
- 35:12Speaker 4: we need to go back to the basics of why
- 35:13Speaker 4: we're investing in the first place. Right, we're investing to
- 35:16Speaker 4: create wealth. But at the crux of it, we need
- 35:19Speaker 4: to remember that there is a risk and reward chart,
- 35:22Speaker 4: and to take risk to get reward, that risk has
- 35:26Speaker 4: to be acknowledged. And one of those risks of investing
- 35:29Speaker 4: in investment properties is that you're not just going to
- 35:32Speaker 4: be able to purchase an apartment off the plan and
- 35:34Speaker 4: lease it out and automatically get you know, a seven
- 35:37Speaker 4: percent yield on your rental return and it's all sunshine
- 35:41Speaker 4: and roses, and you paid your deposit, but don't worry,
- 35:44Speaker 4: all of your tenant's rent coming in is paying the mortgage. Like, yes,
- 35:48Speaker 4: that is a golden opportunity, and some people are in
- 35:51Speaker 4: that situation ethically. But then I also believe some people
- 35:54Speaker 4: are in that situation inethically or unethically because they're overcharging
- 35:59Speaker 4: their tents for what I believe is a basic human right. Yeah,
- 36:02Speaker 4: do I think if I own an inner city apartment
- 36:06Speaker 4: that I can charge a premium on that I don't
- 36:08Speaker 4: own one? But I do think that's the case because
- 36:11Speaker 4: to me, rent is also a lifestyle expense. So there
- 36:15Speaker 4: is the basic human need to have a roof over
- 36:17Speaker 4: my head for a reasonable amount of money, and I
- 36:20Speaker 4: think that's up to the government to legislate, and I
- 36:23Speaker 4: think it's up to the government to make sure that
- 36:24Speaker 4: we are able to access that and have not a
- 36:27Speaker 4: housing crisis, which we are currently in. But at the
- 36:31Speaker 4: same time, I think that if I'm going to buy
- 36:33Speaker 4: a property and it's a lifestyle property and it's not
- 36:36Speaker 4: going to help the cost of living crisis or people
- 36:39Speaker 4: in those situations, yeah, you can charge a premium for
- 36:41Speaker 4: your location or your view or whatever. Like you're not
- 36:42Speaker 4: taking the mickey, but you are taking the miky If
- 36:45Speaker 4: you are trying to increase your tenants rent because your
- 36:49Speaker 4: mortgage repayments increased, Yeah, that is not your tenants responsibility.
- 36:54Speaker 4: In fact, let's pretend you know nothing about their financial situation.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Potentially they chose to rent because they wanted this stability
- 37:00Speaker 4: of a consistent payment each month and they didn't want
- 37:03Speaker 4: that financial responsibility. If your mortgage repayments increase, that's a
- 37:06Speaker 4: you problem, not a tenant problem. And like I just
- 37:10Speaker 4: think that that's where things get a little bit inethical.
- 37:13Speaker 4: There's also the flip side argument where people think that
- 37:17Speaker 4: beck for example, you're not allowed to own multiple properties
- 37:20Speaker 4: until everyone in Australia owns one property so everyone can
- 37:23Speaker 4: be on the property ladder. And to that, I would say, no,
- 37:27Speaker 4: that's not how our economic situation works, right, Like we
- 37:31Speaker 4: don't actually live in a communist society. Things aren't pulled
- 37:35Speaker 4: together and then shared out equally in our society, Like
- 37:39Speaker 4: we are very lucky to live in Australia where we
- 37:42Speaker 4: have a really good social system. I'm not saying it
- 37:44Speaker 4: is perfect. I'm not saying that there aren't things that
- 37:46Speaker 4: need fixing. There absolutely are. But we live in a
- 37:49Speaker 4: society where people who can't get by are given resources
- 37:53Speaker 4: to get by, but people who go above and beyond
- 37:56Speaker 4: and try to make businesses and take big risks are
- 38:00Speaker 4: rewarded for that. And I don't think it is fair
- 38:03Speaker 4: to say that every single person should be able to
- 38:06Speaker 4: buy a property. Is it a situation where I think
- 38:09Speaker 4: everybody should be able to purchase a property? I want
- 38:12Speaker 4: to say yes because I would want that, but also
- 38:14Speaker 4: economically no, Like we are in a and this is
- 38:18Speaker 4: probably a much larger conversation, and I'm going to do
- 38:21Speaker 4: a whole podcast on this at some point soon. But
- 38:23Speaker 4: we are in a situation in Australia where our country
- 38:26Speaker 4: has only been colonized for two hundred issues, meaning that
- 38:31Speaker 4: property was so much more accessible historically. Owning property internationally
- 38:37Speaker 4: is not the norm. You look at places like Germany
- 38:40Speaker 4: and Sweden and nobody owns like I think it's like
- 38:44Speaker 4: only forty percent of their communities are homeowners because the
- 38:49Speaker 4: norm is to rent. And I actually think that instead
- 38:52Speaker 4: of trying to make property more accessible at this point,
- 38:55Speaker 4: because with inflation, with things increasing, with the cost of
- 38:59Speaker 4: living crisis that we're going through, I think the solution
- 39:02Speaker 4: and I'm not saying that is a perfect solution, but
- 39:04Speaker 4: one of the solutions is actually changing our rental laws
- 39:08Speaker 4: and changing tendency agreements. Like overseas, very normal to sign
- 39:12Speaker 4: a ten year lease agreement, very normal to sign a
- 39:15Speaker 4: ten year lease agreement with stepped increments over a period
- 39:18Speaker 4: of time, so normal to be given permission to repaint
- 39:22Speaker 4: the entire inside of a home, make changes, you know,
- 39:25Speaker 4: updated kitchen if you want to, as long as you're
- 39:27Speaker 4: adding value. I couldn't even in Australia when I rented
- 39:31Speaker 4: put a painting on a wall when I requested permission
- 39:34Speaker 4: because they didn't want me to ruin it, Like we
- 39:35Speaker 4: don't feel in Australia like rental properties are our own homes,
- 39:40Speaker 4: whereas internationally that's actually the norm. People will rent a
- 39:44Speaker 4: place and live there for thirty forty years, like that
- 39:47Speaker 4: is the norm. So I think there's a very big sorry,
- 39:51Speaker 4: that's like a complete sideline. I think there's a very
- 39:54Speaker 4: big conversation to be had here and it would be
- 39:57Speaker 4: interesting to unpack why your friends are saying that your
- 40:01Speaker 4: ethical investments aren't ethical. Are they saying that because they
- 40:05Speaker 4: are really against mining. Are they saying that because investing
- 40:09Speaker 4: inherently is something that they're uncomfortable with. If so, why
- 40:13Speaker 4: because at the end of the day, the only way
- 40:16Speaker 4: for an individual to create wealth, if they did not
- 40:19Speaker 4: come from wealth, is to invest. Whether you are investing
- 40:24Speaker 4: in the share market, whether you are investing in creating
- 40:27Speaker 4: your own business, you are never going to create wealth
- 40:31Speaker 4: in a salary and payg job without doing something with
- 40:35Speaker 4: the income that you earn. It's just the reality of
- 40:38Speaker 4: the situation. It's not nice, it's not fun, but you
- 40:41Speaker 4: saying that not investing in general is the most ethical
- 40:45Speaker 4: thing and therefore your suffering because of the lack of
- 40:47Speaker 4: investing that you're doing. I don't want people to be
- 40:50Speaker 4: in that position. Yeah, I want you to have that
- 40:52Speaker 4: education in that choice. So I feel like that's more
- 40:55Speaker 4: of a reflection of them than a reflection of you.
- 41:00Speaker 5: I have friends that sound very similar to this, and
- 41:02Speaker 5: I'm probably more on that end too, but not in
- 41:05Speaker 5: a way that's like, you know, I don't want to
- 41:06Speaker 5: ever be shoving my opinion to anyone's throats, but I
- 41:10Speaker 5: have a podcast.
- 41:11Speaker 4: That's what I do every day, so angel go hand.
- 41:15Speaker 5: Yeah, Well, I just think it's all everyone's in a
- 41:17Speaker 5: unique situation. Like you can't like put a blanket rawn
- 41:21Speaker 5: on literally everyone. But I think that if you're leaning
- 41:24Speaker 5: more on the spectrum of like wanting to make sure
- 41:27Speaker 5: that you'll purchase us every day at ethical and like
- 41:30Speaker 5: I don't know, like taking a keep cup and like
- 41:31Speaker 5: doing your part in the world to like not leave
- 41:35Speaker 5: quite as big an impact, it's like we are doing
- 41:37Speaker 5: all these things. We are trying to like look into
- 41:39Speaker 5: companies before we buy from them, and all these like
- 41:41Speaker 5: you know, the same with shares and stuff, looking into
- 41:44Speaker 5: where your money is going before you invest. And I
- 41:46Speaker 5: think some people can do it really really well and
- 41:48Speaker 5: they've covered everything off. But there are some people that
- 41:52Speaker 5: just like like our listener who we're referring to here, firstly,
- 41:55Speaker 5: I just want to say, like, yeah, with the with
- 41:56Speaker 5: the investment property, I think if our listener knows that
- 41:59Speaker 5: it is a risk.
- 42:00Speaker 2: It is an investment.
- 42:01Speaker 5: And if you have like a share and the share
- 42:04Speaker 5: price goes dramatically down and you lose money.
- 42:08Speaker 4: That was the risk.
- 42:08Speaker 2: The risk, that's the risk.
- 42:10Speaker 5: You lost money. Sorry, that's it. And if you understand
- 42:14Speaker 5: that you're putting someone in the house, you have an
- 42:16Speaker 5: investment property, someone's renting it out and the I don't know,
- 42:20Speaker 5: I actually.
- 42:22Speaker 2: You have to pay more.
- 42:23Speaker 4: That's not the tenant's fault.
- 42:24Speaker 2: That's the risk. That's the risk.
- 42:25Speaker 5: It Just keep that in mind. If you want to
- 42:27Speaker 5: buy an investment property and you're going to do it
- 42:29Speaker 5: that ethically, you're fine.
- 42:31Speaker 4: But yes, likely what if the tenants move out and
- 42:33Speaker 4: you haven't found a new tenant, that's you. That's your problem. Yeah,
- 42:37Speaker 4: that is your cost to carry. That is why you
- 42:40Speaker 4: have an emergency fund. That is why you have to
- 42:43Speaker 4: have so much cash in surplus to own property because
- 42:45Speaker 4: there are things that are gonna pop up.
- 42:48Speaker 5: Totally, totally. But just in regards to the investment thing.
- 42:52Speaker 5: Last week and I was at a friend's birthday thing,
- 42:54Speaker 5: and it was kind of funny because like, I only
- 42:56Speaker 5: drink soda waters, as you guys know, and I should
- 42:58Speaker 5: have a soda stream, but I like to buy myself
- 43:00Speaker 5: glass bottles of so to water when I'm so I
- 43:02Speaker 5: just like, yeah, just so, I feel like I'm you know,
- 43:05Speaker 5: everyone's grabbing their biers and they're like popping their thing off,
- 43:07Speaker 5: and I'm like, I just know you be part of that.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Everyone's like, ah, bag you she'd us there's water in
- 43:11Speaker 5: the tap, and I'm like, hey, guys, it's big corpor
- 43:14Speaker 5: You know, you've got to worry about big corpor Me
- 43:16Speaker 5: as an individual.
- 43:17Speaker 4: You've got to support big corporate. You could have support.
- 43:21Speaker 4: That's why you're buying their water.
- 43:22Speaker 5: I just think there's so only so much weir as
- 43:24Speaker 5: individuals can do on.
- 43:26Speaker 2: The ground things.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Big things grow, right, I know.
- 43:29Speaker 5: And it's like it's like that saying like, oh it's
- 43:31Speaker 5: only one plastic straw says four million people, you know
- 43:34Speaker 5: what I mean? So like I understand where they're coming from,
- 43:36Speaker 5: but it's also it's also it's probably an issue that's
- 43:39Speaker 5: bigger than you and exactly just saying, VIDI if you
- 43:43Speaker 5: if you are wanting to grow your money, you want to.
- 43:45Speaker 5: I don't know. I just think it's the investment part
- 43:48Speaker 5: not it's honestly, it's okay. If you are comfortable investing
- 43:52Speaker 5: in these places, that's okay. It there's something wrong inherently
- 43:56Speaker 5: with the places that you're investing in. Maybe that's the
- 43:58Speaker 5: government thing. And if you're buying investment property, just make
- 44:02Speaker 5: sure you do it ethically.
- 44:03Speaker 4: But we're not all perfect, right, We've all got different values.
- 44:06Speaker 4: It's like the vegetarian who still uses plastic straws, or
- 44:09Speaker 4: like the person who's using plastic straws, but also you know,
- 44:13Speaker 4: actually reinvests in really ethical things. On the flip side,
- 44:17Speaker 4: it's I don't know, the girl who uses plastic bags
- 44:21Speaker 4: is still going to rallies on the weekend about things
- 44:23Speaker 4: that she's really passionate about. Like we're all just doing
- 44:26Speaker 4: our best in line with our values. And if your
- 44:28Speaker 4: values don't align, I think it's a really awesome opportunity
- 44:32Speaker 4: to have a conversation about well what does that mean? Like,
- 44:34Speaker 4: why are you so passionate about that? Why do you
- 44:36Speaker 4: think this? Instead of going, oh my god, Beck, that's
- 44:39Speaker 4: so inethical and you're going, oh, that's awkward you, Oh,
- 44:42Speaker 4: why do you think that? Like, we can have educated conversations.
- 44:46Speaker 4: We don't have to have the same opinion, yes, but
- 44:49Speaker 4: we can have respectful conversations about what that means. And
- 44:51Speaker 4: I think so many times if you know, Jess said
- 44:53Speaker 4: I like ex and I'd be like, oh, like if
- 44:56Speaker 4: Jess said I love the color pink, I'm not going
- 44:58Speaker 4: to reply, ill, I don't like pink? What about pink
- 45:02Speaker 4: do you like? Like, we can have conversations with people
- 45:06Speaker 4: about things that we don't enjoy so that we get
- 45:08Speaker 4: a better understanding of them and their values. I agree. Amen. Anyway,
- 45:12Speaker 4: she's the Money's let Oh, I can't wait. I've got
- 45:15Speaker 4: so much to say about Bloody Landlords that I just
- 45:18Speaker 4: need to be kicked off the mIRC. At this point,
- 45:20Speaker 4: we'll do a whole episode. Oh we will, we will.
- 45:23Speaker 4: So let's get into our DMS this week. Hey, team,
- 45:26Speaker 4: I've got a Christmas bonus dilemma. I've always worked freelance
- 45:30Speaker 4: or contract so I've never really had bonuses or gifts
- 45:33Speaker 4: from work. It's just not something I expect. My partner, though,
- 45:36Speaker 4: is used to getting them and sees them as a
- 45:39Speaker 4: sign of being valued. At his last company, he didn't
- 45:42Speaker 4: get a bonus at all, and he took it really personally.
- 45:45Speaker 4: It started this spiral of feeling undervalued and negative about
- 45:48Speaker 4: his job, which eventually led to him leaving. Now he's
- 45:52Speaker 4: already talking about what his current company's bonus might look
- 45:55Speaker 4: like this year, and I'm worried it's going to be
- 45:57Speaker 4: the same cycle all over again. To me, is just
- 46:00Speaker 4: that a bonus, it's not guaranteed. Am I out of
- 46:04Speaker 4: touch here? How do I help him see the bigger
- 46:07Speaker 4: picture without dismissing how he feels.
- 46:13Speaker 5: I've only had one bonus ever in my entire life.
- 46:15Speaker 5: I didn't realize that anyone in the world thought they
- 46:17Speaker 5: were just the norm. So ivan is an out. It
- 46:20Speaker 5: seems like I feel like it's a real corporate thing. Yeah,
- 46:24Speaker 5: it's super corporate.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Like my husband, for example, gets bonuses as a part
- 46:29Speaker 4: of his remuneration structure, but it is outlined in his
- 46:33Speaker 4: employment contract that if you know his team and the
- 46:37Speaker 4: business reach X level of profitability. Then this whole complex
- 46:42Speaker 4: calculation comes into play. And then if he gets a
- 46:45Speaker 4: five star rating, it's literally like reading a.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Multi level marketing contract.
- 46:50Speaker 4: What it takes to achieve it right, and then his
- 46:54Speaker 4: bonus will be capped at a certain amount and then
- 46:57Speaker 4: he will have a calculated percentage of XY. It's crazy,
- 47:00Speaker 4: but some people. I eat my husband just to be honest,
- 47:04Speaker 4: transparent and like, I guess a little bit relatable. That's
- 47:07Speaker 4: part of his remuneration structure. And he like never knows
- 47:10Speaker 4: what his bonus is going to because it's like it's
- 47:12Speaker 4: too complex for me to work an outside just wait
- 47:14Speaker 4: until work tell me, Oh, this is what the bonus
- 47:15Speaker 4: is this year. But for me, I've never received a bonus,
- 47:18Speaker 4: and I would in corporate. But then also I feel
- 47:21Speaker 4: like small business they don't do bonuses.
- 47:25Speaker 5: No, I just think maybe like bonuses are for the
- 47:28Speaker 5: top dogs who maybe don't need it. But I can
- 47:32Speaker 5: understand that bonuses are there for like people to work
- 47:34Speaker 5: towards something throughout the year so they have this, you know,
- 47:37Speaker 5: incentive at the end of the year. I feel like
- 47:40Speaker 5: it just feels kind of unfair for those on the
- 47:41Speaker 5: ground who don't actually have those things to work toward.
- 47:44Speaker 5: If you're just like if you're a receptionist, and it's like,
- 47:47Speaker 5: you're not technically directly making money for the company, so
- 47:50Speaker 5: you don't there's no way for you to get an
- 47:53Speaker 5: incentive to get the bonus. So it's like, but you
- 47:56Speaker 5: probably need it more than anyone else in the goddamn company,
- 47:59Speaker 5: you know what I mean. So I just feel like
- 48:01Speaker 5: a bonus should be a nice if at all, a
- 48:03Speaker 5: nice little I know that's not what the discussion is,
- 48:05Speaker 5: a nice little surprise at the end of the year,
- 48:07Speaker 5: like everyone's worked very hard, you all get the exact
- 48:09Speaker 5: same amount of money, and that's all. But I did
- 48:12Speaker 5: this person say that he's changed companies and left because
- 48:16Speaker 5: he didn't feel valued. But before he left, he'd been
- 48:19Speaker 5: the same company, got a bonus and then didn't get it.
- 48:21Speaker 4: It was a new company, and they need to feel
- 48:23Speaker 4: valued by that new company, so he left.
- 48:26Speaker 5: I just think like, if there was no discussion about
- 48:29Speaker 5: why there was no bonus, then you might you might
- 48:30Speaker 5: not even know. Maybe it's just not something that they do,
- 48:32Speaker 5: or maybe that's not it's like it's probably got nothing
- 48:35Speaker 5: to do with the worker at all. In fact, yeah,
- 48:37Speaker 5: it's probably so many different things, cost of living, anything else.
- 48:40Speaker 5: But I can understand that if you're used to it
- 48:42Speaker 5: and then it just kind of doesn't happen.
- 48:43Speaker 4: But I've got so many opinions and I don't want
- 48:45Speaker 4: to like put them in here because I want to
- 48:46Speaker 4: ask my actual employee what she thinks about bonuses before
- 48:51Speaker 4: I tell you my thought process on them. My experience
- 48:54Speaker 4: similar to yours. It's where I wait.
- 48:59Speaker 6: But my experience with bonuses was always corporate similar to
- 49:02Speaker 6: your husband. It's it's outlined as a part of your
- 49:04Speaker 6: remuneration scheme, and there's clear markers, like it's not like, oh,
- 49:08Speaker 6: like you've been a nice person this year, so.
- 49:09Speaker 4: You get a five rout.
- 49:11Speaker 6: It was always very clear KPIs to achieve so, and
- 49:15Speaker 6: in my experience, it was everyone within the company was
- 49:18Speaker 6: eligible for bonuses. I've received bonuses at two different companies,
- 49:21Speaker 6: and in both of those places it was like they
- 49:23Speaker 6: were very achievable and so it wasn't like a if
- 49:27Speaker 6: you do a crazy thing this year. It was always like, hey, like,
- 49:30Speaker 6: if you've done your job well for the r you know,
- 49:32Speaker 6: hit your KPIs, everyone's eligible for a bonus. I do
- 49:36Speaker 6: believe it was tiered based. I think it was akin
- 49:39Speaker 6: to your your salary.
- 49:41Speaker 4: So I think like.
- 49:41Speaker 6: People who were percent something like more senior people who
- 49:44Speaker 6: were earning more did get bigger bonuses. But then arguably
- 49:47Speaker 6: those people were taking on larger workloads, larger of responsibilities
- 49:50Speaker 6: or whatever. So like that's how that worked. But like
- 49:52Speaker 6: everybody knew, like you knew if you were going to
- 49:55Speaker 6: get your bonus or not effectively, and you knew that
- 49:57Speaker 6: it was because it was something that you sure was
- 49:59Speaker 6: agreed upon, like when you were hired. I think that
- 50:02Speaker 6: in terms of him leaving, I don't know, because obviously
- 50:06Speaker 6: we're hearing this from our listener's point of view and
- 50:08Speaker 6: the way that she's interpreted it. I don't think a
- 50:11Speaker 6: bonus and not getting a bonus isy enough for somebody
- 50:14Speaker 6: to leave a company.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Yeah, but I feel like there would be more going on, correct.
- 50:17Speaker 6: I think that maybe it's a it's symptomatic of like
- 50:20Speaker 6: the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak,
- 50:22Speaker 6: Like if you're feeling undervalued, if you're not feeling a
- 50:24Speaker 6: part of the team, if you're not feeling like your
- 50:26Speaker 6: work's being recognized, if you're not feeling like XYZ and
- 50:29Speaker 6: then you were hanging in there and you're like, oh,
- 50:31Speaker 6: at least at the end of the year, I'm going
- 50:32Speaker 6: to get my bonus, and you didn't get a bonus.
- 50:35Speaker 6: I can see how that would maybe push somebody over
- 50:37Speaker 6: the edge, but I think that it would probably be
- 50:39Speaker 6: stacking on top of or heap of other things, exactly right.
- 50:44Speaker 6: I do think that when you're being hired, it is
- 50:47Speaker 6: kind of your responsibility to figure out those things. Like,
- 50:49Speaker 6: I don't think you should just expect that every company
- 50:53Speaker 6: does a bonus structure, because it looks different everywhere, in
- 50:56Speaker 6: the same way that compensation broadly looks different at every company.
- 51:00Speaker 6: So I do kind of think that your partner probably
- 51:02Speaker 6: should have looked into that or spoken to their manager
- 51:04Speaker 6: or kind of sust it out, because I don't think
- 51:07Speaker 6: you can just expect everywhere to use a bonus structure
- 51:10Speaker 6: or to do it the same way as your previous employers.
- 51:13Speaker 6: But yeah, I think that them leaving was probably a
- 51:17Speaker 6: result of a number of things. Not simply not getting
- 51:21Speaker 6: a Christmas bonus would be my thoughts.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess this is flipping to the other side
- 51:25Speaker 4: as the employer. I don't do Christmas bonuses. I don't
- 51:29Speaker 4: do bonuses at all, because as a small business, you
- 51:33Speaker 4: kind of like when you're structuring your business, you step
- 51:36Speaker 4: back and go, okay, cool, like how much can I
- 51:37Speaker 4: afford to pay these people? What can I do? And
- 51:41Speaker 4: I would much prefer to max out what I can
- 51:44Speaker 4: pay people annually then like withhold a certain amount of
- 51:48Speaker 4: their remuneration for the rest of Like, I don't know,
- 51:51Speaker 4: it just made me uncomfortable, like looking at the different
- 51:54Speaker 4: business structures, like when you hire one employee, and Jess
- 51:57Speaker 4: was my first in sheese on the money, and I remember,
- 52:00Speaker 4: having already run a company and had employees. I remember
- 52:04Speaker 4: going all right, well, this is actually a whole new entity.
- 52:06Speaker 4: I should look into the type of remuneration structure I
- 52:09Speaker 4: should offer, because you know, prior to Jess, I had
- 52:12Speaker 4: only hired financial advisors and mortgage brokers, and I'd never
- 52:15Speaker 4: really had somebody in a content role. And I was like, well,
- 52:18Speaker 4: what does that look like? And I remember looking into
- 52:22Speaker 4: like the different remuneration structures and talking to a recruitment
- 52:26Speaker 4: person about what would be the best and talking to
- 52:29Speaker 4: my employment lawyer and being like, you know, what are
- 52:31Speaker 4: other businesses in this space doing, and getting a heap
- 52:34Speaker 4: of advice, and ultimately I felt the most comfortable with
- 52:36Speaker 4: going Okay, cool, I can afford to pay Jess the
- 52:40Speaker 4: salary that she really wants, instead of going, oh, well, actually, Jess,
- 52:45Speaker 4: it's actually ten grand below what you are asking for.
- 52:48Speaker 4: But if you're really good and you work really hard,
- 52:51Speaker 4: you can get another ten grand at Christmas. Like I
- 52:54Speaker 4: in my head just didn't like that anticipation of like,
- 52:58Speaker 4: I don't know the idea that Jess or even any
- 53:01Speaker 4: employee would be really waiting until Christmas to be able
- 53:05Speaker 4: to afford something, or really waiting until a bonus to
- 53:07Speaker 4: make something happen. Like I just I like the clarity
- 53:09Speaker 4: of clean numbers. That doesn't mean that Christmas isn't a
- 53:13Speaker 4: generous time for our business, though, Like I feel like
- 53:16Speaker 4: at Christmas time we still have a really beautiful party,
- 53:20Speaker 4: have a you know, presence, all of that fun stuff.
- 53:23Speaker 4: But I feel like that's then again back to what
- 53:26Speaker 4: you were saying, like a surprise, it's not expected. It's
- 53:29Speaker 4: an enjoyable experience. But then I've also been talking to
- 53:33Speaker 4: someone recently where they're like, yeah, we had our work
- 53:35Speaker 4: Christmas party, like everyone was told only have one drink
- 53:39Speaker 4: because that's all the tab cover and it just feels
- 53:42Speaker 4: so stingy. And that's what would make me feel like
- 53:46Speaker 4: my business didn't value me like I would hate for
- 53:49Speaker 4: And this is again complete personal opinion. Everybody runs their
- 53:52Speaker 4: businesses differently. Like I cannot wait for our work Christmas party.
- 53:56Speaker 4: Sit down with everybody? Beck bloody, she's busy route, but like, no,
- 54:01Speaker 4: sit down with everybody for a really nice lunch. Also,
- 54:04Speaker 4: can we just talk about how we always pick a
- 54:06Speaker 4: lunch because I don't want after work hours to be
- 54:10Speaker 4: a part of your expected work of time. Yeah, and
- 54:14Speaker 4: we will be doing that during work hours. I mean
- 54:16Speaker 4: it'll probably kick on, let's be honest, Like every year, Yes,
- 54:19Speaker 4: everyone's gone out for drink suffw towards and had a
- 54:21Speaker 4: really fun time. But like, I just hate the idea
- 54:23Speaker 4: a Christmas time I would expect one of your evenings.
- 54:27Speaker 4: Yeah so busy. Yeah, we're already busy anyway. I feel
- 54:33Speaker 4: like there's you know, give and take. But then other
- 54:35Speaker 4: small business owners would be like, oh, absolutely not. We
- 54:37Speaker 4: don't do a Christmas party. We just buy everybody a
- 54:40Speaker 4: Christmas hamper and send them on their way on you know,
- 54:43Speaker 4: the twenty third of December and I just I don't know.
- 54:46Speaker 4: We've all got our own way of doing things, but
- 54:48Speaker 4: I feel like a bonus is not reflective of how
- 54:51Speaker 4: valued you are. There would have to be other things
- 54:54Speaker 4: at play. Yeah, I agree, I agree what everyone else say.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Oh that was slow juicy. So said, have you ever
- 55:00Speaker 4: scored a Christmas bonus? Only nine percent of you said, yeah,
- 55:03Speaker 4: I get one every year. I'm sure, right, yeah. Twenty
- 55:06Speaker 4: two percent of you said occasionally, but it's definitely not
- 55:09Speaker 4: the norm. And then sixty nine percent of you said
- 55:12Speaker 4: nap never had a bonus. Wow. We said, do you
- 55:15Speaker 4: think Christmas bonuses should be performance based or given equally?
- 55:20Speaker 4: Sixty percent of you said performance based, and forty percent
- 55:23Speaker 4: of you said given equally to everybody. What are your thoughts?
- 55:27Speaker 4: I think this is the like, if she's on the money,
- 55:29Speaker 4: was giving bonuses? Is it equal? Is it performance based? Well?
- 55:34Speaker 5: I think that the risk is like here, what we're
- 55:36Speaker 5: hearing now is that this guy literally left his company
- 55:39Speaker 5: because he felt really disenchanted, really undervalued. This is the
- 55:42Speaker 5: negative effect that bonuses can have if not given to everyone.
- 55:45Speaker 5: But also it's like if you perceive that you have
- 55:48Speaker 5: worked hard all year, but your coworker. Your cowork hasn't
- 55:52Speaker 5: all your stats haven't lined up with that, but you've
- 55:55Speaker 5: been burnt to the crisp. You are burnt out. You've
- 55:58Speaker 5: worked so hard you really loyals to the company. But
- 56:01Speaker 5: because on paper your stats might not show that, you
- 56:05Speaker 5: don't get a bonus.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Sorry, you know what I mean.
- 56:07Speaker 5: It's just like I feel like performance some people are
- 56:10Speaker 5: really not you know, they just come into the bare minimum.
- 56:13Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 56:13Speaker 5: If they've kept their jobs, then they're just they're doing
- 56:15Speaker 5: their job and that's okay. I don't think we need
- 56:17Speaker 5: to always be like striving for extra, extra extra. If
- 56:20Speaker 5: you're doing your job, that's plenty. That's what you've been
- 56:23Speaker 5: hired for. You're doing good.
- 56:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 5: I just think the risk that people will feel undervalued
- 56:28Speaker 5: and actually be working hard and not ever be seen
- 56:32Speaker 5: is higher than just giving everyone the same and someone
- 56:36Speaker 5: benefits even if they've just kind of walked in they
- 56:38Speaker 5: come in late all the time.
- 56:40Speaker 2: That's rarer. I think, Yeah, that's fair.
- 56:42Speaker 6: The metrics are hard too, because generally, like you have
- 56:45Speaker 6: people doing such different things, like in my job, like
- 56:47Speaker 6: I'm directly linked to like revenue being generated. About to
- 56:50Speaker 6: say that somebody like our graphic designer, Like, what she's
- 56:53Speaker 6: doing is absolutely generating revenues, notrect.
- 56:57Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean? So, like I could
- 56:59Speaker 4: sit down and I like that's I was about to
- 57:01Speaker 4: be like, I think it's given equally, But that goes
- 57:05Speaker 4: back to a bigger conversation about accountability, performance management and stuff.
- 57:11Speaker 4: So I know, in my she's on the money team.
- 57:13Speaker 4: I'm proud of you guys, So that's why I always gloat.
- 57:16Speaker 4: But like everyone in my team works friggin hard. Yeah,
- 57:19Speaker 4: if you don't work hard, it's not the environment for you.
- 57:22Speaker 4: It's going to be very obvious. Like I would say,
- 57:26Speaker 4: I'm not a micro manager, Like I'm not sitting there
- 57:28Speaker 4: being like what are you doing? Just but it will
- 57:29Speaker 4: be obvious if Jess wasn't doing her job, same with
- 57:32Speaker 4: literally anybody else in the team. But you know, we've
- 57:35Speaker 4: got our graphic designer. She can't put a number on
- 57:38Speaker 4: what her work brings in. But if you didn't have
- 57:40Speaker 4: a graphic designer, just what are content's going out? What
- 57:42Speaker 4: content is going and what am I selling? You know,
- 57:44Speaker 4: they've got a podcast producer and she's fantastic, But Jess,
- 57:48Speaker 4: what are you selling if our broadcast producer doesn't do
- 57:50Speaker 4: her job well.
- 57:52Speaker 6: If you can't, it's so hard because I think, and
- 57:53Speaker 6: especially if you look at like a larger company, you go, oh,
- 57:56Speaker 6: like an admin assistant for example, versus someone in a
- 57:58Speaker 6: sales team the same. Your team on paper is bringing
- 58:01Speaker 6: in money, but like I'm.
- 58:02Speaker 4: Sorry, the assistant is making sure that they can do their.
- 58:05Speaker 6: Job, running ragged to make it happen. So it's it's
- 58:08Speaker 6: hard because I think you're not comparing like for lack for.
- 58:11Speaker 4: Like when you do it exactly. I do like the idea.
- 58:14Speaker 6: Of it as much as I understand what you're saying
- 58:16Speaker 6: back about how some people might coast and some people
- 58:18Speaker 6: might go above and beyond. I do kind of like
- 58:21Speaker 6: the idea of it being applied equally again equally valued. Yes,
- 58:27Speaker 6: I agree, but I mean.
- 58:28Speaker 4: There's arguments that go both ways, right, But like, but
- 58:32Speaker 4: I think in this situation, they're saying it's because he
- 58:35Speaker 4: doesn't feel valued, and it's like, well, to me, that's
- 58:41Speaker 4: all or nothing kind of statement, like that's not I
- 58:45Speaker 4: don't feel valued because I generated an extra X, y Z.
- 58:48Speaker 4: Then you know, just over in sales, like what you expected,
- 58:52Speaker 4: Like I don't know, I just don't like the idea
- 58:54Speaker 4: that one team member would get preferential treatment to another
- 58:58Speaker 4: because they had sales target. Anyway, it becomes so comp
- 59:01Speaker 4: Look how complex we're making it. We did ask the
- 59:04Speaker 4: community for some opinions. Would you like to hear them?
- 59:07Speaker 4: I thought you might so. First person said, my dad
- 59:10Speaker 4: used to get a Christmas Ham and a slaber beer.
- 59:13Speaker 4: I've never had anything from work. Do you know what
- 59:16Speaker 4: my dad's work used to give away? A Christmas Ham?
- 59:19Speaker 2: You set Christmas ham? Christmas Like, I'll just bid sharing too.
- 59:24Speaker 4: Thanks for this.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Leg that's really bad.
- 59:29Speaker 4: It's terrible.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Well, it's probably on me.
- 59:31Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 59:31Speaker 2: I wasn't making a song and dance. I should have.
- 59:34Speaker 4: Someone else said, I get it as vouchers, not big bonuses.
- 59:39Speaker 4: But last year they just gave it to me in
- 59:42Speaker 4: my pay But then I got extra attacks. Of course
- 59:46Speaker 4: that's what they did, YEA. If I am giving cash
- 59:50Speaker 4: to a team member, like for some reason, or like
- 59:52Speaker 4: a bonus or a Christmas present, not bonus, you know
- 59:55Speaker 4: what I mean. Like, if there's some reason I'm gifting
- 59:57Speaker 4: them something, it will come as a vis A gift card.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: Most of the time because I'm literally like okay, cool,
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I don't want to be like, oh, here's a Mecca
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: gift card. If I don't know your financial situation, maybe
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: like one hundred dollars at Mecca Sligh. I know Jess
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: would love that, so like, I don't think there'd be
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: any complaints, but maybe Beck you'd be like what the hell?
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: Like I would prefer a hundred bucks in my bank account. Yeah,
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: the groceries like a Visa gift card cann't do that.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: So if you're an employer and you've never done it,
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: and you're thinking about Christmas this year and you're like, oh,
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: I don't know what to get people, you've probably already
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: done it because today's the last Friday before Christmas. But
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: silence away for next year, Away for next year. Visa
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: gift cards are I would say employees favorite type of
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: gift cards because they can be used anywhere. True. True. True.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: Someone else said, no bonuses when you work for the government.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: If you think you add that much value, you should
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: be asking for a raise. Also a relevant point.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Well, that's a good point.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: Yes, you think you deserve more, ask for it.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Huh, that's a really good point.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: Humbling. I like it.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: Someone else said, I've always received a gift card reflective
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: of my role level and workload that year in three roles.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: Now cool. I didn't realize the gift cards were so prominent. Yeah,
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I like this picasso. Someone else said in this climate,
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: reality is most businesses can't afford bonuses. It doesn't mean
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: they don't value you. Someone else said, a bonus is
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: a bonus, and it shouldn't be expected because it's a bonus.
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: Which kind of contradicts the fact that it gets put
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: into a lot of remuneration schemes.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like we are confusing the terminology. So
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: like obviously in if it's in your remuneration structure, a
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: bonus is a bonus if you meet a certain amount
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: of KPIs and there's like a whole structure to it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: It sounds like this person didn't have, like going back
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: to the listener question, they didn't have that in their
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: pay structure. It's not like, oh, it was in his
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: contract and he never got paid it. It's like a
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: little Chris, It's a little Christmas treat he was expecting
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: but didn't get. Yeah, So if it's in your pay structure,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know. It's just so varied,
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: isn't it. Someone else said, I worked exceptionally hard one
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: year only for everyone to get the same bonus.
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: I can see how that would be, yes, Like carry
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: back to what you are saying, Yeah, I can see what.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Whereas from an employer's perspective, I kind of look at
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: it and go yep, because I'm pretty sure when I
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: look at my business as a wholest team effort.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: Totally Yeah, and honestly like sometimes just being like, hey,
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: you actually did a great job this year, like that's plenty,
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: that feels.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Really good, And I'll have personal conversations about that, you know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: discuss it and talk about salary and talk about all
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: of those things separately, because I don't want people to
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: not feel valued. But like a little gift on the side,
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: isn't why you're valued?
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: Someone else said, we always get a bonus of a
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: two hundred dollars Woolies gift card, which is great, but
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I never rely on them.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's a great gift, all right Christmas?
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: Someone else said, try working in health. Don't even get
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: a day off at this time of year, let alone
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: a bonus. Oh and you have to shell out of
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: your own pocket for the work Christmas party. What Yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: I wouldn't be doing. I remember I worked at a
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: university one time and they made the biggest deal about
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: this work Christmas party and I was like, oh, okay,
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: norries and like the university I worked at was not
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: in the Melbourne CV and they had picked to Melbourne
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: CBD location for the Christmas party. And I'm thinking, oh,
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: this is great that work's putting this on official work
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: invitation all of that, and then an email went around
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: and they were like, oh, make sure you bring at
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: least one hundred dollars in cash. I remembering like what, sorry,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: sorry dude, And then I asked like my direct manager
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: about it. Thankfully I liked her, and I was like,
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: what's this about, Like why would we bring one hundred
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: dollars cash? And she's like, oh, because, like it's just
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: so much easier at the end of the night. You know,
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: the set menu that we're paying for is like sixty
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: nine dollars ahead and then drink, so it will be
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: at least one hundred dollars ahead. And I was like,
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: I will totally not be attending. I was taking it
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: back by it because I was like, oh, like already.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: I was feeling a little bit awkward because spoiler, I
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: didn't like the rest of the team. That's why that
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: job never worked out for me. Didn't want to go.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: Was taking my partner, so like awkward conversation and being like,
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: so does that mean like two hundred dollars, Like what's covered?
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: What's not? They're like, oh, none of it's covered. We've
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: just organized it as a team to go out, and
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: I was like cool, but it was just the backward
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: situation in the entire world. I went because I felt awkward.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: Shit is night of my life and ayre like I've
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: had a bad time.
- 1:04:09Speaker 6: I hate everyone here, ad I'm one hundred dollars for
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: this is the worst.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: I ever And everyone was rude to my now husband,
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: like they were just so rude, and I remember, I'm
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: on the way home. I'm like, I'm so sorry, Steve,
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: and he was like, well, that was terrible. I was like, yep, anyway,
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: that's what the community had to say. I feel like
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: that's a good place to leave it. It is. I'm excited.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: We have a bonus episode coming out on Christmas Day,
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: so don't worry, We're not done it. With the festivities yet,
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: but if we don't speak to you before then have
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: the best festive season.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Mary, Chris, Marry Chris.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Holidays, my friend. Hope you have a good period. We
