- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here, and you're about to listen to a hypnosis
- 0:43session that is designed to defy anxiety because there is a
- 0:48paradox with anxiety. And the paradox is that
- 0:53something makes you feel anxious or the idea makes you feel
- 0:56anxious, so you avoid or overthink whatever that thing
- 1:01is. And the avoidance increases
- 1:04sensitivity and the overthinking increases anxiety.
- 1:08So then you get more experiences of either avoiding or feeling
- 1:12anxious, not because of the thing itself, but because of the
- 1:15other overthinking connected to the thing.
- 1:19So how do you break that pattern?
- 1:22Well, there is a psychological phenomenon called the law of
- 1:25reverse effect that actually you do the very opposite.
- 1:29So instead of trying to avoid anxiety, you just say, bring it
- 1:34on. I'm ready for it.
- 1:36And and that energy paradoxically reduces the very
- 1:41probability of the anxiety. And a lot of anxious people
- 1:46would say, but I can't just say bring it on.
- 1:47I can't just do it in a defiant way because I'll get anxious.
- 1:52But actually it's doing it in that way that reduces the
- 1:56probability of, of anxiety. For example, you might remember
- 2:00when you were a school child, there would be certain people
- 2:04that would love the idea of acting or performing in front of
- 2:07other people. They couldn't wait to do it.
- 2:09They wanted the big audience and other people that were very
- 2:13self-conscious and those that really went into it and they
- 2:17weren't bothered what people think and they just thought, no,
- 2:19I want to perform. They ended up being good and
- 2:22those people, very self-conscious, ended up on the
- 2:24stage being a little bit nervous.
- 2:26Maybe they heard someone laugh and then that increased the
- 2:28anxiety. So it creates these diverging
- 2:31pathways, but both are self fulfilling prophecies.
- 2:35So I want you to think of, and this client, by the way, it was
- 2:38public speaking in front of other people.
- 2:40So it's defying the anxiety. It's doing the thing in a very
- 2:44kind of ambitious, courageous, brave way.
- 2:49I want you to think of what is your anxiety?
- 2:52What we're just doing it and not doing it tentatively.
- 2:55You're not doing it cautiously, but doing it brazenly.
- 2:59What would that be like for you? And hold that thought as you
- 3:02listen to this. And then you'll get more from
- 3:05this session. And if you like the idea of
- 3:07working with me, I'd encourage you to do one of two things.
- 3:10I have a suggestibility test in the description, but I also have
- 3:16a, a webinar where I explained the whole process of working
- 3:19with me. So if either of those things are
- 3:20of interest, check them out in the show notes.
- 3:23The descripcion of this episode. For now though, find a quite
- 3:28comfortable place where you won't be distracted or
- 3:30disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 3:58Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in.
- 4:07Not relaxation, but a feisty stubbornness.
- 4:15That feeling that you're done avoiding, you're done running
- 4:21away, you're done over preparing and exhale.
- 4:30Just any of those things that have a presupposition that you
- 4:37can't handle. Something excuses memories.
- 4:43Just allow them to leave your body in your outward breath.
- 4:51And I wonder if you can recall the time when you felt defiant,
- 5:02a time when you felt backing down was not an option, a time
- 5:10when part of you wanted to be tested, wanted to be challenged,
- 5:22breathing in and breathing out. And just imagine, imagine
- 5:29perhaps the pride of lions. Perhaps you could imagine the
- 5:39leader of that pride being tested.
- 5:46And instead of being worried by being tested by a younger lion,
- 5:51the lion seems to smile, projecting the ethos of you dare
- 6:01to challenge me. And if that essence, that
- 6:10essence of bring it on can exist in an animal, it can exist
- 6:19within you. So let's go back to that memory,
- 6:26a time when you were undeterred and you know for a fact that
- 6:34other people would have been intimidated, nervous, avoidant
- 6:42in that very same situation. But there was something
- 6:48different about you. You were the same person, just
- 6:54with a different part in control.
- 7:00That part that wanted to be tested, wanted there to be some
- 7:06risk. And if you can recall a memory
- 7:12like that to begin with, just observe that version with you
- 7:19with that quality, and let me know by nodding your head when
- 7:22you can go back to that memory as an observer.
- 7:29That's it. There would have been clues, of
- 7:32course. Facial expression if you were
- 7:38talking, the tonality of your words, subtle mannerisms that
- 7:48strong, undeterred, defiant, resilient.
- 7:54And maybe that version of you didn't want something to happen.
- 8:00But the fact that it was a possibility did not deter you.
- 8:04In fact, it activated something powerful and strong within you.
- 8:13And I want you to imagine seeing a colour glowing under the feet
- 8:20of that version of you. And then imagine not just like a
- 8:27spotlight there under your feet, but imagine it going upwards
- 8:32like a three-dimensional cylinder, like a beam.
- 8:37See that defiant, undeterred, confident version of you bathing
- 8:45in that cylinder of light? Imagine what colour that
- 8:50cylinder of light would be. See that version of you refusing
- 8:57to back down and notice at some level that quality in you meant
- 9:09the thing you didn't want to happen was less likely to
- 9:14happen. And the opposite is also true.
- 9:21There is an anxiety paradox where the anxiety increases the
- 9:27probability of the very thing the anxious person doesn't want
- 9:33to happen. Just imagine someone terrified
- 9:39of Wasps having a picnic. Everyone's enjoying themself.
- 9:47A wasp comes along, and that one individual terrified of being
- 9:53stung by a wasp can't help but focus on the wasp.
- 10:01It's just invisible to everyone else there at the picnic.
- 10:05But that person terrified of what if they get stung, is then
- 10:10standing up waving their hands. And the irony years that
- 10:20panicked individual is the most probable to be stung, even
- 10:28though they wanted the least. Or perhaps you could imagine in
- 10:35the same park or garden, someone terrified of dogs.
- 10:42For most people, they're fine around dogs, but the individual
- 10:50scared that what if they get bitten, will see a dog off its
- 10:57lead and fixate on the dog. And the dog becomes curious.
- 11:05Why is that human holding all of that eye contact?
- 11:10So they get closer and that human has that anxious reaction,
- 11:19which makes the dog more curious, which may mean that
- 11:23human starts to run and the dog starts to chase.
- 11:28And if you're unconscious, you can see the pattern of where
- 11:35anxiety increases the probability of the very outcome
- 11:41the individual is looking to avoid.
- 11:43Let me know by nodding your head.
- 11:48And that could happen in public speaking.
- 11:53Someone's worried about feeling anxious, a spike of anxiety.
- 11:59They prepare too much, think too much.
- 12:07They're on edge, vigilant, cautious, the very state that
- 12:14increases the probability of having that very spike of
- 12:19anxiety they want to avoid. Whereas someone that is
- 12:25indifferent doesn't need to over prepare or overthink too much,
- 12:32also doesn't want the spike of anxiety.
- 12:36It just thinks if it happens they'll deal with it and then it
- 12:40becomes more elusive. I want you to think of that time
- 12:47when you felt undeterred, defiant.
- 12:50See you there standing in that beam of light.
- 12:57And imagine seeing that version of you in a different context,
- 13:04right before a presentation, right before a huddle, right
- 13:10before an important meeting. But see yourself with exactly
- 13:17the same mannerisms, exactly the same facial expression.
- 13:23If you're talking, exactly the same tonality.
- 13:27See that version of you undeterred, defiant.
- 13:34With that bring it on attitude oozing from every pore and that
- 13:42version of you is not fazed at the possibility of an anxiety
- 13:46spike. That version of you could not
- 13:51care less. Almost once wants to be tested,
- 13:59knowing that nothing would deter them.
- 14:04And in doing so, the very anxiety becomes more elusive.
- 14:13And I want you to see that version of you doing the kind of
- 14:18things that a different version of you would have some
- 14:24trepidation in the past. But if that undeterred, defiant
- 14:30version of you seems to be unfazed, unbothered, highly
- 14:38capable in exactly the circumstances, let me know by
- 14:41nodding your head. That's it.
- 14:45Rewind it. Step into that version of you.
- 14:51But let's go back to the original memory.
- 14:54You feeling defiant, undeterred. Remember where you were.
- 14:59Remember how you were talking. Remember your inner dialogue.
- 15:06You weren't naive, you were aware there was a risk.
- 15:12It's just the risk did not deter you.
- 15:16That's the very essence of being undeterred.
- 15:20It's not that there's no challenge, it's that the
- 15:24challenge doesn't stop you. I want you to imagine re
- 15:30experiencing whatever you experienced back then, when you
- 15:33felt defiant, undeterred. You were aware of the
- 15:40possibility of something challenging, a risk perhaps.
- 15:45It did not stop you. You weren't anxious, you weren't
- 15:50worried. You were resourceful, resilient.
- 15:56You felt defiant and undeterred and just scan your body for
- 16:03where you feel that sensation within you and just point to
- 16:07that location, that feeling of being resolute, defiant,
- 16:13undeterred. That's it.
- 16:18Imagine a shape there. Make the shape 3 dimensional,
- 16:21give it a color, notice how it moves.
- 16:26Increase the size of the shape, the brightness of the shape.
- 16:30Feel. Feel that feeling of being
- 16:34defiant and undeterred there. And then imagine taking that
- 16:42feeling into the very next presentation, the very next
- 16:48huddle, the very next meeting. Keep the same in a dialogue, the
- 16:57same posture, the same breathing.
- 17:03People can read that expression on you, embody that, feel that
- 17:08shape there in that location, vibrating, emitting that color
- 17:15in that intensity. And just imagine saying to
- 17:20yourself with a smile, an act of challenge.
- 17:28Bring it on. I'm ready.
- 17:31The paradox being your act of defiance.
- 17:37Feeling undeterred shrinks the very probability it reduces it.
- 17:47It says I don't fear you anymore.
- 17:55Most anxiety is the fear, the fear of the physiological
- 18:01consequences of fear, a self fulfilling prophecy.
- 18:06And when you call the bluff, even if something that was real
- 18:12in the past. But what if it was real in the
- 18:14past? Not because the threat was
- 18:17credible, but because you thought the threat was credible.
- 18:23Just imagine doing that thing in that defiant, confident,
- 18:29undeterred way. A sense that nothing will stop
- 18:37you and nothing will have you going back to that cautious,
- 18:45anxious, on edge version of you. In psychology, they call it the
- 18:52law of dominant effect. A dominant emotion displaces A
- 19:00weaker emotion by activating that confident, defiant,
- 19:09undeterred version of you. There simply isn't space for
- 19:15that anxious version of you to be present.
- 19:22Imagine a big boss with only one driver's seat.
- 19:27If the doors open and that confident, defiant, undeterred
- 19:32version of you grabs the steering wheel first, there is
- 19:36no space for that anxious version of you to be in control.
- 19:45And I want you to imagine three months of that undeterred,
- 19:51confident version of you being in the driver's seat.
- 19:57And just imagine going to that future and being told there is
- 20:03an unexpected presentation, a big meeting.
- 20:10And just imagine, the moment you hear about it, it automatically
- 20:16activates that confident, undeterred version of you and
- 20:22think, how would you feel? Three months of not a single
- 20:27spike, because the version of you that would contribute to the
- 20:37spike has had no influence If you're unconscious at that point
- 20:44would come to the conclusion that this fear is now in your
- 20:48past, not a concern anymore. Let me know by nodding your head
- 21:04and imagine six months, and then 12 months and then two years.
- 21:09Imagine what you could be doing if any fear or anxiety felt like
- 21:14a distant memory that you can recall that there was genuine
- 21:20times when you felt that way, you just hadn't felt it for so
- 21:25long, kind of didn't feel like it was you anymore.
- 21:33What would be possible for that version of you?
- 21:37What opportunities would you say yes to?
- 21:42What difference would it make as it ripples through your
- 21:44business? What additional doors may open?
- 21:53Some people believe that everything you desire is on the
- 22:00other side of fear. But I want you to think of just
- 22:05one thing you desire on the other side.
- 22:10Make it appealing, genuinely desirable, beneficial in some
- 22:15way. You don't need a million
- 22:19reasons, just one. And that defiant, confident,
- 22:27undeterred version of you is the very part of you that will
- 22:36influence and secure that outcome.
- 22:43Remember that shape, that colored area in your chest.
- 22:49Give it a sound and be aware of your inner dialogue when you're
- 22:53in that state, and just say 3 words in a particular tonality
- 23:03of defiance. Bring it on.
- 23:11Keep saying it until it feels true, real, authentic, and when
- 23:21you've got those 3 words in that tonality and whenever you want
- 23:27to feel this way, think of that shape there in that location, in
- 23:33that color color, and just say those words repeated until they
- 23:40match this tonality. And then you know you have
- 23:46activated the very part within you that is not bothered, not
- 23:55daunted, not scared, and in doing so eliminates the very
- 24:05concern that's been concerning you.
- 24:09You are harnessing the self fulfilling prophecy for you
- 24:13rather than against you. And you are just a few
- 24:19presentations away from having irrefutable evidence that how
- 24:27you feel right now was true all along.
- 24:34It's time to return to the present, taking this state, this
- 24:37feeling with you. Looking forward to that next
- 24:41presentation, wanting to say yes to a talk meeting, initiating
- 24:50the very things you've been avoiding.
- 24:54So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 24:58nose and wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 25:03Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
