- 0:00Most people think relapse just happens.
- 0:03Not true. Relapse happens long before the
- 0:061st drink happens in your brain. In tiny moments you don't even
- 0:10notice. All right, so today we're
- 0:12breaking down exactly how relapse happens, the science
- 0:16behind it, and tools to stop before it starts.
- 0:20Hey guys, my name is Anthony. I'm in recovery.
- 0:23Came into recovery in 2015. Struggled with substances
- 0:27including alcohol and stimulants.
- 0:29I've been to multiple rehabs. I relapsed after eight years
- 0:32sober. I am now in addictions
- 0:35counseling. I work at a rehab and I'm here
- 0:38today to tell you everything I've learned.
- 0:40I am definitely an expert in relapse, that's for sure.
- 0:43I've had a few of them. I've studied them.
- 0:45I've spent a long time analyzing what went wrong and now I'm
- 0:49going to bring it to you as well as a little bit of science
- 0:52behind it. And then the stages of relapse
- 0:54I'm going to talk about. I'll also throw in a little bit
- 0:57about my last relapse and how it happened.
- 1:01And so that you don't have to, you can avoid this going forward
- 1:04because I'll tell you right now, I don't recommend relapse to
- 1:07anybody, but if it's going to get you into recovery faster, it
- 1:11could be a good thing. And for me, it was a good thing,
- 1:13because I did learn a lot about myself.
- 1:16Most importantly that I I have lost my right to chemical Peace
- 1:20of Mind. I cannot safely use outside
- 1:22things to change my insides. And I'll do it all the time.
- 1:25I'll do it with gambling. I'll do it with relationships.
- 1:28I'll do it with food. I use outside things to change
- 1:31my insides. My goal today isn't to shame
- 1:33anybody. I'm going to explain relapse in
- 1:35a way that maybe it'll finally make sense for you, and then
- 1:38maybe you can avoid it and save yourself the mental anguish and
- 1:43your others around you, the pain of having to watch you go
- 1:47through that again. I'm going to talk about how
- 1:49recovery is a process and not necessarily an event.
- 1:53It doesn't just happen overnight.
- 1:55You know, these things have been brewing up for a while.
- 1:57You emotionally relapse before you physically relapse, in my
- 2:00experience, and that most people relapse not because they're
- 2:03weak, but just they don't have the tools.
- 2:06I didn't have the tools to look for certain things before it
- 2:09happened. And then also, it's one thing to
- 2:11have the tools to know what to look for before it happens.
- 2:14It's another thing to do something about it, right?
- 2:16To call someone and tell them you want to drink or to go to
- 2:19that meeting that you really don't want to go to 'cause
- 2:21you're ashamed you're feeling this way.
- 2:23So I'm gonna talk about the three phase model and starting
- 2:26with phase one, emotional relapse.
- 2:29Nobody really talks about this phase because it's not obvious
- 2:32and a lot of people don't know that they're there.
- 2:35Nothing really looks. Nothing really looks wrong from
- 2:37the outside. It's sort of like the duck,
- 2:39right? You, the duck swimming,
- 2:41everything looks good on the surface, but underneath you're
- 2:43paddling like a fucking madman. So the key point here is you're
- 2:47not physically using yet. You're not even thinking about
- 2:50using or drinking yet. That's the key point.
- 2:52It hasn't even crossed your mind, right?
- 2:54You're not saying most people relapse.
- 2:55In my experience, I relapsed when I wasn't thinking about
- 2:58relapsing. A lot of people also relapse
- 3:00when they think they're immune to relapse, right?
- 3:03And they're, I have some sober time now.
- 3:05I'm good, I'm cured, I'm fixed, I'm immune to relapse.
- 3:08Very dangerous place to be. Huge red flag if you catch
- 3:10yourself feeling or thinking like so.
- 3:12The important part here is your behaviors are creating the
- 3:15conditions for the relapse. Some signs that you're in this
- 3:18phase. Poor sleep, isolating, skipping
- 3:21meeting support groups, irritability, restlessness,
- 3:25bottling your emotions, right? Stuffing it down and saying I'm
- 3:29fine when really you need help. So emotional relapse is
- 3:32essentially disconnecting. You're disconnecting from your
- 3:35recovery behaviors, your recovery, your recovery tools,
- 3:40right? Those habits that you've built
- 3:42up up until this point, it could be slowly 1 by 1.
- 3:45You stop going to a meeting here and there, you stop calling
- 3:47somebody here and there. You stop talking about certain
- 3:50things you used to talk about with other people.
- 3:52And so the nervous system moves into fight, flight, freeze or
- 3:56fawn, which is a emotional response to stress and people
- 4:00look for relief. So an example of this stage for
- 4:03me was, you know, I was three months sober after relapsing.
- 4:07After 8 years, I came back in, went to a rehab in Utah, and I
- 4:11was three months sober. And I've talked about this
- 4:13before, but I was driving home from the cottage and I just felt
- 4:17emotionally distraught, right? I was just drained.
- 4:20I felt bored, I felt depressed, I felt alone.
- 4:24And I stopped doing the recovery things that I had done to bring
- 4:28me to that point. You know, I was living at a
- 4:29sober house and I didn't hang out with the guys at the sober
- 4:33house, right? I didn't stay close to my
- 4:35recovery community. I was more focused on other
- 4:37things. I remember even going to a Blink
- 4:40182 concert that night and I didn't drink that night, but I,
- 4:44it was the first time in a while that I actually craved a drink.
- 4:47I was thinking about beer. I was thinking about drinking.
- 4:51I was thinking about fixing my insides, right.
- 4:53I'm gonna, you know, I need some kind of relief.
- 4:56I was looking for relief and I I talked about it with people, but
- 4:59I didn't follow up with the action after and continue to do
- 5:01the recovery things after the so Phase 2.
- 5:04This is mental relapse. So first was emotional, now
- 5:06mental. We're talking about this is the
- 5:08sort of internal war, the battle that you have in your head.
- 5:11You know, the justification start to come out the all the
- 5:14reasons why, you know, I always say this, but I can write a book
- 5:17with thousand 1000 reasons why I should drink, 1000 reasons to
- 5:22drink and use drugs. I could write that book today.
- 5:24I can come up with the stupidest, most insignificant,
- 5:27but they make sense to me, you know, reasons to pick up a
- 5:30drinking drug. So like I said, you're thinking
- 5:32about using. You're thinking about the good
- 5:34times. You're glorifying it in your
- 5:35head. You're bargaining with yourself.
- 5:37Maybe I could just have one. Maybe I could get away with it
- 5:39here. No one would know.
- 5:41Maybe I could control it. Now.
- 5:42I'm feeling better. I'll come back to this recovery
- 5:45thing after. I'm just going to do some more
- 5:47experimenting. You're minimizing the
- 5:49consequences. You know, it wasn't that bad.
- 5:51Yeah, I got kicked out of my house.
- 5:52But you know that won't happen again because she was
- 5:55overreacting. Just absolute nonsense, right?
- 5:57Not truth. Your attic brain is planning to
- 6:01kill you. It's planning to take you out.
- 6:02And these are the steps that it takes to do so.
- 6:05This is also the point where maybe you're planning it, right?
- 6:07You have an upcoming party that you're looking forward to or a
- 6:09cottage weekend with the boys or a bachelor party.
- 6:12And you're like, yeah, that's I'm going to do it.
- 6:14No one's going to know. And I'm going to get away with
- 6:16it and I'm going to come back to recovery or I'm going to be OK.
- 6:19I'm not going to go on a Bender this time.
- 6:21This time will be different, right?
- 6:23Pure insanity. Doing the same thing, expecting
- 6:26different results. Insanity.
- 6:29So the cravings come from a multitude of places, but mainly
- 6:33stress, anxiety, fear, resentment, right?
- 6:37Anger towards yourself or other people, loneliness, certain
- 6:40people or places or music. Memories get triggered and like
- 6:45I said, you're remembering the good times only essentially
- 6:48emotional discomfort. And instead of picking up the
- 6:50recovery toolkit you've been given, you pick up the quick
- 6:53easy fix or you start to think about picking up the quick easy
- 6:57fix because it worked that one time and this time it's going to
- 7:00work just like that. You know, cocaine made solved my
- 7:03problems and made me happy and feel euphoric for three minutes
- 7:07that one time. It'll last longer this time.
- 7:09Insanity. And when you know when you're
- 7:11under stress too. The other thing to note is the
- 7:14emotional stress, the feelings, overwhelming feelings your
- 7:18dopamine levels are attracted to the shortcut, right?
- 7:22The easy quick fix, the Band-Aid solution, the line of coke, the
- 7:25drink, the pill, whatever your thing is, your brain remembers
- 7:30that that was a quick fix. And so scientifically, it's
- 7:34really hard to reverse and snap out of that, but you can, it is
- 7:36possible and I've done it. I do it often actually.
- 7:39You know, I still get thoughts today, almost 11 months clean
- 7:43and sober again. I still get memories of the good
- 7:45times of like having a lot of drugs on me and the feelings of
- 7:50freedom, illusory freedom, I call it that we had right this,
- 7:53this feeling of illusory freedom that drugs and alcohol gave us
- 7:56where I don't have to be an adult today.
- 7:58I miss that. When really it's we all know how
- 8:02it ends up. It's not fun, it's not ideal.
- 8:04The people around you hurt, you hurt.
- 8:06It leads to pure chaos and pain every single time.
- 8:11So when you find yourself arguing with yourself,
- 8:13justifying it, coming up with crazy irrational ideas to
- 8:18relapse or to use, that's when it's a red flag.
- 8:21Notice that talk about it. You can reverse that pattern.
- 8:24I do all the time, like I said, something that helps me a lot
- 8:28too is, is just laughing about it with other people, right?
- 8:30Or even on yourself, like, oh, I'm doing that thing again.
- 8:32My addict brain is back. He's doing that thing again.
- 8:36These these things work, right? Start to to label it for what it
- 8:38is. It's an emotion and that's it.
- 8:41It doesn't have to become an action or a behavior.
- 8:44All right, phase three, physical relapse.
- 8:46So this is the final stage. There's a lot of different ideas
- 8:50for different phases and some of them have, you know, 5 phases, 4
- 8:53phases. This is just a basic three phase
- 8:56framework that I like to deal with because it's simple and I
- 8:59like some. So this is the result, not the
- 9:01beginning. You've actually gone and picked
- 9:02up and done the drugs or alcohol.
- 9:05So at this point, you've already made the decision you've picked
- 9:08up and the earlier 3 phases have already weakened your ability to
- 9:13choose. You've you're kind of past the
- 9:15point of no return, right? Where no, I've made my decision,
- 9:18I'm going to do it and I don't care about the consequences.
- 9:21I'll sweep it under the rug, right?
- 9:22That was me for a long time. I used to do that all the time.
- 9:25I'll deal with this. This is tomorrow, Anthony's
- 9:27problem. Today I'm going to get good and
- 9:29high. Tomorrow Anthony will deal with
- 9:31it. So I think a lot of people blame
- 9:33this as the moment for relapse, right?
- 9:35Where they don't realize that it's already been brewing.
- 9:38The relapse had been brewing emotionally and mentally
- 9:41beforehand. So I want you to think about
- 9:43your relapses that you've had and sort of look back, journal
- 9:46about them, analyze them. Go through it with a friend.
- 9:48Don't do it alone. Where did your relapse start?
- 9:51Right? If you can honestly look back at
- 9:52it, where did it start? It wasn't at the first drink.
- 9:55So OK, what happened in the weeks, months before the 1st
- 9:58drink? Be honest with yourself.
- 10:00Maybe you can reverse it for next time.
- 10:01I find that we, we're patterned people, right?
- 10:03We, we tend to do the same things over and over again.
- 10:06So if I can recognize my pattern of why I need to use drugs and
- 10:11drink, then I can stop it before it happened.
- 10:13For me, a big one is fear, boredom, right?
- 10:16Like is this all my life is now? I talk about that a lot here is
- 10:19this all my life is now and I can't imagine living another day
- 10:24in this boring shithole of a life when sometimes I just need
- 10:29to push through and white knuckle through those moments to
- 10:31get through the other side. Because I'll tell you, every
- 10:34time I've done that, I felt 1000 times better.
- 10:36Whenever I've successfully battled a trigger, craving a
- 10:40thought with other people's help because I can't do it alone, as
- 10:43I always say, I've felt 1000 times better, bar none.
- 10:47Remember, relapse isn't 1 moment, it's 1000 small
- 10:52unchecked moments. All right, now I'm gonna talk
- 10:55about why relapse happened. So root causes.
- 10:58Maybe this will help you identify why you have relapsed
- 11:01in the past and how to avoid it. And again, there are a lot of
- 11:04reasons for a lot of us, but these are just the ones that I
- 11:06can come up with. So one is unmanaged stress.
- 11:09The brain seeks relief over logic a lot of the time, and
- 11:13alternatives to handling stress would be for me, it's
- 11:17meditation, grounding techniques, right?
- 11:19Sometimes using your five senses.
- 11:20So if I'm sitting down and I'm really spinning out, focus on
- 11:24what I can see, what I can hear, what I can touch, what I can
- 11:28smell. Focus on the senses and that'll
- 11:30ground you. Phoning a friend is a big one
- 11:32for me now. So calling someone and just
- 11:34saying, hey, how's it going? Asking them about their day.
- 11:37And then if you feel comfortable with that person saying, hey,
- 11:40I'm spinning out right now, what do you think about this?
- 11:42Right. Hey, can I bounce something off
- 11:44you? Hey, I'm feeling this way.
- 11:45What do you think? Going outside is another good
- 11:48one. Going to the gym, getting
- 11:49physical, moving your body in some sort of capacity.
- 11:52Get off the fucking couch. Reason 2, Isolation and
- 11:56disconnection. So the opposite of addiction is
- 11:58connection. That means addiction's best
- 12:01friend is isolation. Here's what being alone does to
- 12:04me at least. And I think to a lot of people,
- 12:06when I'm alone, I'm the only one checking my ideas, right?
- 12:11It's a dangerous place to be where I'm like, you know, I'm
- 12:13spinning out about the fear of the future.
- 12:15Or if I, you know, I'm not making enough money at this job
- 12:19and I shouldn't have left my old job to become a counsellor.
- 12:23And, you know, I made a mistake and the podcast isn't doing the
- 12:26way I want it to do. So now I'm stressed about that.
- 12:29I spin all these ideas in my head and they just become true,
- 12:33more true as I think about them. They're ruminating in my head.
- 12:36I'm not getting them out. They have all the power.
- 12:38They're renting the entirety of my head.
- 12:42Easy solution to this one. Sorry, simple solution to this
- 12:45one. Going to a meeting, any support
- 12:47group, talking to your therapist, online communities,
- 12:50going for coffee with a friend. Easy, quick little wins.
- 12:54Coffee with a friend is a favorite one of them.
- 12:55Reason 3. This one is so common in early
- 12:58recovery in the rehab that I work at, and I just actually
- 13:01dealt with it today with the guy.
- 13:03Overconfidence. I'm doing good, I'm better now,
- 13:09I'm cured. Complacency is by far the
- 13:13highest risk of relapse, right? It wasn't that bad, guys.
- 13:16Don't worry, I've got this. Resting on our laurels, right?
- 13:21Just coasting and recovery. Dangerous, dangerous place to
- 13:24be. You do all this work to get
- 13:26sober and then slowly but surely you drop the tools 1 by 1.
- 13:30I don't need to go to that many meetings anymore.
- 13:32I don't need to do this. I don't need to do that.
- 13:34I don't need to talk about my thoughts.
- 13:36I'm better now. If addiction is a progressive
- 13:40disease, which it is, that means it's progressing as you get
- 13:44sober. So that means I'm my addiction
- 13:47is stronger than it was 11 years ago.
- 13:51That means to me, I need to do more work than I did 11 years
- 13:55ago. It might look different, right?
- 13:57Sure, I'm not going to five meetings a week, but I have to
- 13:59put in the work 24 hours a day. I do different things now 24
- 14:03hours a day, like talk to my higher power, calling people,
- 14:06going to my Home group every single especially when I don't
- 14:10want to. And trust me, I don't want to a
- 14:13lot of the So confidence is good.
- 14:15Complacency is lethal and deadly reason for emotional avoidance.
- 14:22Most relapse isn't about wanting the substance.
- 14:24It's not about the high. It's wanting the escape, the
- 14:27safety net of checking out quite.
- 14:30I always say this, but turning down the volume knob on your
- 14:33thoughts, That's what it did for me at least.
- 14:35Ted, tomorrow didn't matter. When I was high and drunk,
- 14:38nothing mattered. I crave that nothing matters.
- 14:41Feeling. So if we're constantly avoiding
- 14:44our emotions, mainly shame, anger is a big one.
- 14:48Resentment, self hatred, self pity.
- 14:51If we're constantly avoiding and stuffing down and not talking
- 14:54about it, not dealing with it, not facing it, not sitting with
- 14:57it, but sitting in it instead of sitting with it, right?
- 15:00Not analyzing it, not being honest about it, we're doomed.
- 15:03It's only a matter of time before your brain fills up and
- 15:07seeks that pressure release valve, right?
- 15:10That steam needs to blow off. And we know how to do that quick
- 15:15and easy with drugs and alcohol, but it's never quick and easy,
- 15:18is it? It never ends up quick and easy
- 15:20because we're addicts, we're Alcoholics, or both.
- 15:24All right, how to stop relapse before it starts.
- 15:28I'm going to give you some tools here.
- 15:29OK, so tool 1, pattern recognition, start tracking the
- 15:33early signs with, with journaling, phone apps,
- 15:35whatever. Track it, analyze your patterns.
- 15:38So sleep, isolation, irritability.
- 15:41Have I been isolating more this week?
- 15:44At the end of the day, think about it, write it down.
- 15:46What did I do right today? What do I need to improve on
- 15:49today? Am I more irritable?
- 15:51Am I lashing out at my loved ones?
- 15:52These are all signs. So there's the rule of three
- 15:55that we can also track here where you're writing down 3
- 15:58stressful events, three emotional triggers, and three
- 16:02days in a row without recovery action.
- 16:05If you can name your patterns, you can identify your patterns,
- 16:08you can interrupt them. Tool 2, immediate interrupt
- 16:12techniques. So this is in the moment.
- 16:14Stop it in its tracks. Call or text someone.
- 16:16That's a big one. And if they don't answer, call
- 16:18or text the next guy or girl. Go to a meeting.
- 16:21There's online ones. I did a whole podcast episode
- 16:23about different types of recovery meetings.
- 16:25Pick one, change your environment immediately.
- 16:28Go outside, go to a coffee shop, get out of your head, move, use
- 16:32grounding techniques. The five senses that I talked
- 16:34about. Also there's, you know, counting
- 16:36down from 5, three deep breaths in and then three long breaths
- 16:41out. Or breathing in for four
- 16:44seconds, holding it for four seconds, breathing out for six
- 16:46seconds. Urge surfing, so delaying the
- 16:49urge, riding the wave. Wait 10 or 15 minutes.
- 16:53Just wait it out. Do something else instead.
- 16:55This too shall pass. I promise you, it'll pass.
- 16:58Not in your time, but it will pass.
- 17:00Every craving does. There's usually a peak and then
- 17:03a fall, much like a wave. 2O3 build a a relapse prevention
- 17:08plan. OK, a lot of you that have been
- 17:10to rehab have done this before. It's very simple, very
- 17:13effective. Write down.
- 17:14Have a list of who you can call, what you can do, where you can
- 17:18go. What thoughts are red flags for
- 17:21you and what actions you need to commit to daily?
- 17:24Write this all down and follow it if this all sounds like a lot
- 17:26too. You don't need to do all of this
- 17:28in one sitting, and you're not. You haven't failed if you don't
- 17:31do any of these, right? Start implementing one tool at a
- 17:33time. Start implementing one thing at
- 17:35a time. Start analyzing.
- 17:37You know build small wins, right?
- 17:39You don't need to swallow this all whole in one day.
- 17:42You don't need to do this all. It doesn't happen overnight.
- 17:44Recovery does not happen overnight.
- 17:45It's built in small wins, small moments, getting through hard
- 17:49things. Recovery is not built on
- 17:52motivation, it's built on systems, repeated actions,
- 17:56tools. And when in doubt, call another
- 17:59alcoholic or addict will save the day.
- 18:01When you don't know what to do next, reach out your hand.
- 18:04Ask someone that has more sober time than you how to get through
- 18:07it. They will help you if they're in
- 18:09a good place spiritually and in a good recovery, working a good
- 18:13recovery program. And if you have a little more
- 18:15time and you're a little bit more steady in your recovery, go
- 18:18and help someone else. I'm telling you, service is the
- 18:21greatest tool recovery has to offer I bar none.
- 18:25Being of service to somebody else gets you out of your shit
- 18:28and into their shit. When I'm sitting down next to
- 18:31another guy who's struggling or in recovery, I'm not thinking
- 18:34about my problems. I'm not thinking about myself.
- 18:37I'm listening to them. I'm trying to help them.
- 18:39I'm being of service. Try it, it works.
- 18:42Relapse can be a part of recovery, but it does not have
- 18:46to be. When I first went into rehab at
- 18:4823, I stayed sober and clean for eight years without one slip 1
- 18:53relapse. And then I did.
- 18:55I didn't think I was going to relapse.
- 18:56And as my therapist always says, relapse happens when you're not
- 19:00thinking about relapse. So be honest with yourself.
- 19:03Analyze these things. Think about the tools I've given
- 19:05you today. Start to look back on your past
- 19:08relapses and and analyze them. You know, don't sit in it and
- 19:11obsess over it. Don't beat yourself up about it.
- 19:14That's the other thing. You're of no use to yourself or
- 19:16anyone if you're beating yourself up about relapsing.
- 19:19It's not failure. It can be a part of the process.
- 19:23For me, relapsing after eight years, coming back in was the
- 19:26hardest fucking thing I've ever done.
- 19:28Admitting to my friends who have known me as the sober guy for
- 19:31eight years that I I relapsed. I thought I lost it all.
- 19:34You don't lose it all. You can jump back on the horse
- 19:37any moments. That's the best part about
- 19:39recovery is when I'm falling off the beam a little bit.
- 19:42When I'm falling off the horse, I can get back on within
- 19:45seconds. Falling off, in my experience,
- 19:48takes a little bit more longer of the time, right?
- 19:50But I can immediately jump back on the recovery in the recovery
- 19:53saddle today, right now, one thing at a time.
- 19:57I've had many relapses in my life, three major ones.
- 20:00I've learned something from every single one of them.
- 20:02Let your relapse be an enhancement to your recovery.
- 20:06Let it be an opportunity for growth, not a failure.
- 20:09Learn from it. Your plan maybe was.
- 20:13Broken. Maybe your plan wasn't the right
- 20:16plan for you. Revise that plan, rewrite the
- 20:19story and push forward. Be of service.
- 20:23Help others. You can get through this.
- 20:26Push through the tough moments. Ask for help.
- 20:28Do the next right thing. If you can't do the next right
- 20:31thing, do the next thing right. OK guys, thanks so much for
- 20:35being here today. I am so appreciative of all of
- 20:37you. The holidays are coming.
- 20:38It's a tough time. Send me a message if you want me

- 20:59Pay it forward the gift that was freely given to you.
- 21:03And just remember this, You don't have to drink or use drugs
- 21:08today. You don't have to.
- 21:10I know it feels sometimes like you do have to.
- 21:13It does get easier. It does get better and then it
- 21:16gets worse and then it gets better and then it gets worse.
- 21:18But it is so fucking worth it. You are worth it.
