- 0:51Speaker 3: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:54Speaker 3: that lets you be pervy about other people's money stories
- 0:57Speaker 3: for educational purposes, of course, back to another one of
- 1:00Speaker 3: our money diaries, brought to you by our friends at Skywell,
- 1:03Speaker 3: where we get to talk with one of our incredible
- 1:06Speaker 3: She's on the Money community members all about their journey.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Let's jump straight into it, because this week I got
- 1:12Speaker 3: a message and it sounded exactly like this, dear, she's
- 1:15Speaker 3: on the money. I've always been a finance girl. I
- 1:19Speaker 3: was working in local government, studying finance on the side,
- 1:22Speaker 3: investing and saving for my house deposit. Then I got
- 1:25Speaker 3: diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma exactly one year after I set
- 1:29Speaker 3: up my personal insurances. I'm nineteen days away from my
- 1:33Speaker 3: last chemo. Now the cover I had in placement, I
- 1:36Speaker 3: didn't have to panic about work or bills while going
- 1:39Speaker 3: through treatment, and that's changed the way I see everything.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I'm finishing chemo with a very different definition of what's
- 1:46Speaker 3: important in life. Money Diarist. We were talking before and
- 1:51Speaker 3: I said, hey, how are you? And you were like
- 1:53Speaker 3: good considering, and I was like, that's a terrible question
- 1:56Speaker 3: for me to ask, So I asked, how was your day?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Let's do that. Welcome to the show.
- 2:01Speaker 3: How's your day been thus far, so far, so good.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Now I'm really excited to have you on the show.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I feel like this is such an interesting and good
- 2:10Speaker 3: story to be sharing. Let's dive straight into the questions, though,
- 2:14Speaker 3: because I don't want to miss a beat. And then
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm going to ask you a bit more about what's
- 2:18Speaker 3: going on. You've always been a finance gurly, so what
- 2:22Speaker 3: grade would you give your money habits from A through
- 2:24Speaker 3: to F I.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Think, considering I've always been a finance gurllye, a.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Solid bee because I'm like, for sure with my knowledge,
- 2:31Speaker 4: I could be doing better.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Whoops.
- 2:34Speaker 3: But also let's give ourselves a little bit of leniency.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Let's talk a little bit more about your situation and
- 2:39Speaker 3: your money story. Let's go back a couple of years.
- 2:43Speaker 3: What's been going on. You were saving for your first home,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you were studying finance, you were working in government, and
- 2:49Speaker 3: then you got diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- 2:51Speaker 2: How has that been?
- 2:52Speaker 3: What does that look like? Talk us through what you're
- 2:54Speaker 3: comfortable sharing.
- 2:56Speaker 4: After most of last year being scans and tests, send
- 3:00Speaker 4: scans and tests, I didn't get diagnosed until September. Wow, Des,
- 3:05Speaker 4: I'm an anxious girly through and through. If there's something
- 3:08Speaker 4: to worry about, I'll worry about it. But for most
- 3:11Speaker 4: of that year I was I'm not sick, nothing's wrong.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I'm getting these tests and scans, but nothing's wrong. So
- 3:18Speaker 4: it did quite blindside me, like to have cancer, and
- 3:21Speaker 4: they also found out it was stage four and basically
- 3:25Speaker 4: said the day they said it, like, you have stage
- 3:27Speaker 4: four Hodgkins lymphoma exactly one week later starting chemo. So
- 3:31Speaker 4: I had a week to entirely pretend my life to
- 3:34Speaker 4: tell work. I couldn't come back to pause, study, to
- 3:39Speaker 4: do everything. So it was very crazy.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And I feel like that's the admin side of it
- 3:43Speaker 3: that nobody sees, right, Like we hear all of the stories,
- 3:47Speaker 3: like maybe not all of the stories, but we hear
- 3:50Speaker 3: stories like I was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphomer and this
- 3:53Speaker 3: is what my medical journey looked like. But in the background,
- 3:56Speaker 3: you have a whole entire life that needs to come
- 3:58Speaker 3: to a grinding halt. What was that like, trying to
- 4:01Speaker 3: clean your life up or get stuff together within a
- 4:04Speaker 3: week so you could start chemo, which you knew was
- 4:06Speaker 3: going to knock you off your thocks.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it was exhausting, and yeah, definitely the life admin
- 4:11Speaker 4: was like the one that was like, I didn't expect
- 4:14Speaker 4: that at all, and the one that's like, I shouldn't
- 4:16Speaker 4: have to deal with this as well, Like you kind
- 4:18Speaker 4: of you prepare yourself for the medical stuff, but the
- 4:21Speaker 4: admin You're like, why am I doing this?
- 4:23Speaker 2: But yeah, it was hard, Like I you know, you
- 4:25Speaker 2: have to tell people. You have to tell your friends,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and you have to tell your family, and you have
- 4:29Speaker 2: to tell work.
- 4:29Speaker 4: And there was such a short amount of time to
- 4:31Speaker 4: tell so many people, so very very emotionally exhausting.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and like you don't deserve that at that moment.
- 4:38Speaker 3: That is the worst possible moment to dump more stuff
- 4:41Speaker 3: on you. No, definitely, So you said, Oh, I'd been
- 4:44Speaker 3: getting tests and scans and tests and scans for like
- 4:47Speaker 3: a whole year, and I didn't think I was sick.
- 4:50Speaker 3: What meant that you were getting tests and scans? Like,
- 4:52Speaker 3: how did we identify that there might have been something
- 4:55Speaker 3: not quite right?
- 4:56Speaker 4: So I think it was maybe like late fab early March,
- 5:02Speaker 4: I got INFLUENCEE and that did knock me down. I
- 5:06Speaker 4: was so tired, and after that I was tired for
- 5:09Speaker 4: a while, but I was also working full time studying
- 5:12Speaker 4: part time, and I was like, I can kind of
- 5:14Speaker 4: expect that I'm tired, Like that makes sense. I was thinking, also,
- 5:19Speaker 4: maybe maybe there's something not quite right, but like maybe
- 5:21Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm law on iron or something, and
- 5:25Speaker 4: then a few weeks after the flu, I found a
- 5:28Speaker 4: lump in my armpit and started out reasonably small, and
- 5:34Speaker 4: my doctors were considering it was following the flu, like
- 5:37Speaker 4: it's probably inflammation, like in the lymphatic system, and.
- 5:41Speaker 2: It will die down. I would believe that, yeah, So
- 5:44Speaker 2: they started with just like ultrasounds of like yeah, and
- 5:48Speaker 2: the ultrasound text came back with like, yeah, it looks
- 5:50Speaker 2: like inflammation. Let's, you know, wait four weeks and see
- 5:53Speaker 2: if it goes down. And then each time it was like, oh,
- 5:57Speaker 2: it's actually got it a bit bigger. But it got
- 5:59Speaker 2: a bit bigger.
- 6:00Speaker 4: And then they were like, oh, but you just got
- 6:02Speaker 4: the flu shot, so maybe the flu shot made it
- 6:04Speaker 4: get bigger again.
- 6:07Speaker 2: So then eventually they did a biopsy and then the biopsy.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Came back with like not quite any results, so that
- 6:14Speaker 4: I had to get a cent off for further testing.
- 6:17Speaker 4: And then I got actually before they even were sure
- 6:20Speaker 4: of anything, I got referred to a cancer specialist, a hematologist,
- 6:24Speaker 4: and she was even looking at the reals like this
- 6:27Speaker 4: doesn't confirm anything. We're not sure of anything, but we're
- 6:29Speaker 4: going to send you for a buther tests and act
- 6:32Speaker 4: as if you had something just in case. So they
- 6:35Speaker 4: sent me for pet scans and they did their own
- 6:36Speaker 4: biopsies and then yeah, finally got some results. Wow, I
- 6:41Speaker 4: feel like that is just so frustrating hearing that.
- 6:44Speaker 3: You're like, well, you know, in fed March, i had
- 6:47Speaker 3: influenza A and that kind of just acted like a
- 6:49Speaker 3: shield for me getting a diagnosis by September. Yeah, Like
- 6:53Speaker 3: that's a long period of time, especially given it's relatively progressed,
- 6:58Speaker 3: like your stage four. Yeah, what's the prognosis on that
- 7:02Speaker 3: you finished chemo in nineteen days as of writing this letter.
- 7:05Speaker 3: When is the actual date?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Thirty eighth the March.
- 7:07Speaker 3: That is so exciting and what will that mean after
- 7:12Speaker 3: So it'll.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Definitely just be waiting for a little while and thenn
- 7:15Speaker 4: doing more tests and hopefully they're all clear. Dignosis is
- 7:18Speaker 4: very good, Like lymphoma is a very curable condition, even
- 7:22Speaker 4: at stage four, and thankfully, despite the fact that it
- 7:26Speaker 4: did take so long to check it, apparently it was
- 7:28Speaker 4: caught pretty early, Like oh good, I guess you know,
- 7:31Speaker 4: people cannot notice a lump for a long time, or
- 7:35Speaker 4: like maybe it doesn't have physical symptom at first, so
- 7:38Speaker 4: they do think it was caught quite quick. And my
- 7:40Speaker 4: mid chemo scan was all clear.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Oh I'm glad. We're all very optimistic. I love that.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And you look quite young. Can I ask how old
- 7:49Speaker 3: you are? Because I didn't get that information before.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm twenty eight. She's just a baby.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I feel like that's so rude, but also sorry. One
- 7:57Speaker 3: of the reasons I was like this is going to
- 7:59Speaker 3: be a fantastic money diary is one you are so positive,
- 8:02Speaker 3: like you're kind of like smiling, going, oh, yeah, we
- 8:04Speaker 3: did this, and oh it was the flu vaccination. I'm like,
- 8:07Speaker 3: that's not funny, babe, Like that's very serious.
- 8:10Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I like, do it for the plot, cancer, do it
- 8:15Speaker 3: for the plots? She says, just rolling with. But you
- 8:18Speaker 3: also had all your insurances set up. And I do
- 8:21Speaker 3: not know many twenty eight year olds who have actually
- 8:23Speaker 3: got this stuff together because we just I don't know,
- 8:25Speaker 3: you're on to thirty. We don't take life that seriously,
- 8:27Speaker 3: like it's never going to happen to me. All of
- 8:29Speaker 3: us say that, right, Yeah, how did you know to
- 8:32Speaker 3: get that set up? Why did you get that set up?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Well?
- 8:34Speaker 2: I actually have to thank you. It was Are you serious? Definitely?
- 8:39Speaker 2: She's on the money.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Episode and you guys had sky Wealth on and they
- 8:42Speaker 4: were talking about you were talking about your favorite personal
- 8:46Speaker 4: insurances and also sharing stories of people who had used them.
- 8:51Speaker 4: But yeah, also definitely despite that, I was like, I
- 8:54Speaker 4: went through the process of sky Wealth, and even when
- 8:57Speaker 4: they gave me like the recommendations, I was like, do
- 9:00Speaker 4: I really want to do this?
- 9:02Speaker 2: I could take money for ottest things, right.
- 9:04Speaker 3: You second guess it because it's not cheap, Like, don't
- 9:06Speaker 3: get me wrong. Income protection is not like four dollars,
- 9:10Speaker 3: like it's a couple of thousand dollars a year in
- 9:12Speaker 3: most cases, Like it's not something that you just go whatever,
- 9:16Speaker 3: like you actually have.
- 9:17Speaker 2: To consider it, Yeah, for sure.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And I wasn't like prepared for how much like I
- 9:21Speaker 4: was going to be quoted, And when I did, I
- 9:23Speaker 4: was like, WHOA, Okay, do I want to do this?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:26Speaker 4: And I definitely spent a long time like deliberating and
- 9:29Speaker 4: almost didn't go through with it.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So I'm like crazy proud.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Of myself that I got it, because my life could
- 9:36Speaker 4: be very different right now if I didn't have that
- 9:38Speaker 4: critical illness.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's crazy. So tell me you got your critical
- 9:42Speaker 3: illness set up, you got income protection set up?
- 9:45Speaker 2: What did that look like?
- 9:47Speaker 3: So you know, you had to do all of the
- 9:49Speaker 3: crazy administration, you know, telling people that you had cancer,
- 9:53Speaker 3: telling your work that you couldn't come back to work.
- 9:56Speaker 2: What was it like?
- 9:56Speaker 3: Did you pick up the phone and go, hey, phil
- 9:59Speaker 3: bin diagnosed and he gave you six million things to
- 10:02Speaker 3: fill out? Like what's the process when you actually had
- 10:04Speaker 3: to claim and go through that? Because like, don't get
- 10:06Speaker 3: me wrong, I know there's not heaps and heaps of paperwork,
- 10:09Speaker 3: but there's also a process and there's also a period
- 10:11Speaker 3: of time where you can't have it until you can claim.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 4: So I basically pretty quick after my diagnosis, I shot
- 10:18Speaker 4: an email to the person who set me all up
- 10:21Speaker 4: and walked me through it originally, and I said, hey,
- 10:25Speaker 4: just hypothetic if I have.
- 10:27Speaker 2: The kissed, what am I eligible for? And what does
- 10:32Speaker 2: that look like?
- 10:33Speaker 4: And she immediately called me back and said, yes, one
- 10:36Speaker 4: hundred percent. You have trauma protection. That's going to be
- 10:39Speaker 4: your big one and you can like just let the
- 10:42Speaker 4: claims team know and they'll walk you through it. And
- 10:44Speaker 4: she said, and then you also do have income protection
- 10:47Speaker 4: within your superannuation. So I had a chat with the
- 10:50Speaker 4: claims team and we decided because I was overwhelmed that
- 10:56Speaker 4: we'd prioritize the critical illness because that was less paperwork drama,
- 11:00Speaker 4: and it was you know, a lump sum that didn't
- 11:03Speaker 4: have a waiting period.
- 11:04Speaker 2: It just required a diagnosis.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Right, yeah, So yeah, it was pretty simple, like I
- 11:08Speaker 4: told them, and they said, you know, we just need
- 11:10Speaker 4: something like this from the doctor.
- 11:11Speaker 2: There was like one form for me to fill out
- 11:13Speaker 2: and then they basically did everything and there was.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Just updates every now and then going like hey it's
- 11:18Speaker 4: moved to this stage or hey it's done this, and
- 11:20Speaker 4: then I think it was a text message going it's
- 11:23Speaker 4: been accepted and you'll get it, and I didn't even
- 11:25Speaker 4: know how much, and then it.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Just hit my picture amazing. And what we're talking about
- 11:29Speaker 3: here is critical illness, which is trauma insurance, which, as
- 11:33Speaker 3: you said before, very succinctly, all you need is a diagnosis.
- 11:36Speaker 3: You don't need to go through like a three month
- 11:38Speaker 3: weight period. You're not talking to them about whether you
- 11:40Speaker 3: have like a sixty ninety or one twenty weight period, like,
- 11:43Speaker 3: none of that. It's just if you get diagnosed with something,
- 11:47Speaker 3: they have like usually a tiered system where you know
- 11:50Speaker 3: if it's really serious like stage four lymphoma. You're going
- 11:54Speaker 3: to get a bigger lump sum payout than like a
- 11:56Speaker 3: stage one melanoma.
- 11:57Speaker 2: So talk to me.
- 11:58Speaker 3: What level of cover did you you have and what
- 12:00Speaker 3: type of payment got put in your bank account?
- 12:02Speaker 4: So it had up two one hundred and twenty four
- 12:05Speaker 4: thousand dollars and one hundred and twenty four thousand dollars
- 12:08Speaker 4: was paid out, so I got the full amount.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Great, and now let's talk through what that actually means,
- 12:14Speaker 3: because that's fantastic. Got paid to have cancer. That's pretty terrible.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I'd probably pay one hundred and twenty four thousand dollars
- 12:20Speaker 3: to not go through that, So I think that's actually
- 12:22Speaker 3: a terrible deal. But the entire purpose of trauma cover
- 12:25Speaker 3: is to make sure that you have cash available so
- 12:28Speaker 3: that you're not financially stressed, so you don't have to
- 12:30Speaker 3: you know, sell the family home or like downsize or
- 12:33Speaker 3: move back in with your parents or do any of
- 12:34Speaker 3: the things that you don't want to do during that period.
- 12:37Speaker 3: What have we been spending that money on in the
- 12:39Speaker 3: last few months?
- 12:40Speaker 2: So actually nothing yet?
- 12:42Speaker 3: Okay, iconic, So you did just get paid, So.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, like definitely I would one hundred percent pay that
- 12:47Speaker 4: money back to not go through this life experience.
- 12:49Speaker 2: But yeah, now we're here. Now that we're here, we're
- 12:53Speaker 2: going to make the most of it.
- 12:54Speaker 4: So yeah, no, I got it, and i'd I mean
- 12:57Speaker 4: unfortunately because I'm using it all up on cancer. But
- 13:00Speaker 4: i had a lot of leaves saved, so I've still
- 13:03Speaker 4: even though I haven't really worked at all, I've been
- 13:05Speaker 4: getting my annually sick leave, everything paid out at half paid,
- 13:11Speaker 4: so I've basically.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Still been getting a paycheck this whole time.
- 13:14Speaker 4: It's just ended like this last fortnight, I've run out officially,
- 13:18Speaker 4: but that was enough to cover basically all the bills
- 13:20Speaker 4: because also most of my bills decreased because I'm not
- 13:23Speaker 4: going anywhere. I'm not doing anything. I'm very immune compromise,
- 13:27Speaker 4: so my social life is zilk cha at home. People
- 13:30Speaker 4: can visit and watch a movie with me. So I'm saving,
- 13:34Speaker 4: like I wouldn't be spending as much money as if
- 13:36Speaker 4: I was out living my life and doing things.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And you know, I guess beauty of being in Australia, like.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Most the healthcare is fully covered, not so much the
- 13:45Speaker 4: scans and tests pre diagnosis, but post diagnosis. Everything's been
- 13:49Speaker 4: covered so really, all I've had to pay for is
- 13:52Speaker 4: the odd prescription or parking at the hospital.
- 13:55Speaker 3: So so far, it's just sitting there waiting to do
- 13:58Speaker 3: something after this. That makes me so happy that it's
- 14:01Speaker 3: just sitting there. Like, Don't get me wrong, I'd also
- 14:03Speaker 3: be so happy for you if it had like taken
- 14:05Speaker 3: the financial stress off significantly to not pay you know,
- 14:09Speaker 3: rent or bills or whatever it is, because not everybody
- 14:12Speaker 3: has enough leave saved to be able to, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 3: take a significant chunk out of work. What did your
- 14:18Speaker 3: income protection look like? So was that something that you
- 14:21Speaker 3: applied for later when you were less overwhelmed.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeap, So we applied for that in January and so
- 14:28Speaker 4: far because that's through my super and was not set
- 14:31Speaker 4: up through Sky. I originally started the process by like
- 14:34Speaker 4: reaching out to Sufa trying to get the forms from them,
- 14:36Speaker 4: which was a long process of back and forth always
- 14:39Speaker 4: finally got all that. I had to send a bunch
- 14:41Speaker 4: of forms off to everyone, you know, employer hematologists again,
- 14:45Speaker 4: so it took a while, but I sent them all
- 14:47Speaker 4: off beginning of JAM and so far have no response.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I'm for following up, but thankfully Sky has also sent us.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I was going to say, sent things through so they.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Can do all the follow up now and they've taken
- 15:00Speaker 2: off my head. Oh good.
- 15:02Speaker 4: So I'm really hoping that we can get that sort
- 15:03Speaker 4: of by the time I've finished chemo, because I'm imagining like, also,
- 15:08Speaker 4: I'm good right now and I haven't needed the critical
- 15:10Speaker 4: illness for expenses, but now I've run out of leave
- 15:13Speaker 4: and I don't think I would be able.
- 15:15Speaker 2: To return to full time work immediately after, so in
- 15:19Speaker 2: come protection would be really good for that, like transition.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And I was going to ask, what's the plan
- 15:23Speaker 3: because like, you don't just I was going to say,
- 15:26Speaker 3: I'm really lucky to have had experience working with people
- 15:28Speaker 3: in your situations. That's not lucky, Like I feel like
- 15:31Speaker 3: I'm grateful for the experience because like I've learned so much.
- 15:34Speaker 3: But what happens post cancer is often more important financially
- 15:41Speaker 3: than what's happening during it, because during it, you've got
- 15:44Speaker 3: and like I don't know your personal situation, but during it,
- 15:47Speaker 3: most people's expenses drop because you can't leave the house
- 15:49Speaker 3: and you're just going back and forth. Like we bitch
- 15:51Speaker 3: a lot about hospital parking fees and why are you
- 15:54Speaker 3: putting fines on cars of people who are getting chemo rude,
- 15:57Speaker 3: you should get a sticker to be like you can't
- 15:59Speaker 3: get me, Like I'm actually out of this game at
- 16:02Speaker 3: this point, Like that's not okay. But I think the
- 16:05Speaker 3: most important thing is, like what's the plan after, because
- 16:08Speaker 3: as you said before, you're significantly immunocompromised. Going back into
- 16:12Speaker 3: a full time work environment is not a good idea.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You are going to be exhausted. You're not just immunocompromised.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Your entire body is compromised and has been knocked for
- 16:21Speaker 3: six so forty.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Hour work weeks.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I'm assuming I'm not an option yet. So have you
- 16:27Speaker 3: been talking about to go back to work plan or
- 16:29Speaker 3: like thinking about it?
- 16:30Speaker 2: What does that look like? So, yeah, I've definitely been
- 16:33Speaker 2: thinking about it.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I will have to have the conversation with work sometime soon,
- 16:38Speaker 4: but they have been, thankfully local government very understanding. But yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 4: I'm definitely like I obviously priorities changed, like I do
- 16:46Speaker 4: not want to put myself under under stress as well,
- 16:49Speaker 4: Like I want to take the time and get my
- 16:52Speaker 4: health back as much as possible, and yeah, immuno compromised
- 16:56Speaker 4: for sure, but like I've also ended up with like
- 16:59Speaker 4: a really high heart rate, and I ended up with
- 17:02Speaker 4: like a lung infection and like lost all my muscle mass.
- 17:06Speaker 4: So like even like leaving the house for like a
- 17:10Speaker 4: five minute errand takes like all my energy. So it's
- 17:13Speaker 4: like I want to in a very healthy and slow way,
- 17:17Speaker 4: like increase things over time. Like it'll be really good
- 17:21Speaker 4: to have the money there as well to see things
- 17:23Speaker 4: like maybe a physio because like I'm going from not
- 17:27Speaker 4: doing anything physically for six months to wanting to move
- 17:30Speaker 4: my body again, So to do that in a way
- 17:32Speaker 4: that's not going to do injuries or.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Any unduced stress or anything.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I feel like you sound really balanced about this. Like
- 17:41Speaker 3: a lot of the communication that I'm having at the
- 17:43Speaker 3: moment with you is just like you're very positive, which
- 17:46Speaker 3: I'm adoring, but also you're like, I don't want to
- 17:48Speaker 3: put that pressure on my body. I don't want to
- 17:50Speaker 3: do this that I'm not used to hearing that I'm
- 17:53Speaker 3: used to hearing people grow. I just want to get
- 17:54Speaker 3: back into it. I just want to be back where
- 17:56Speaker 3: I was, like without identifying that that's going to be
- 17:59Speaker 3: a journey. So why is that your mindset? Like how
- 18:02Speaker 3: are you in this position? Because it's a fantastic position
- 18:05Speaker 3: to be in.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I think maybe because of the last year, Like I
- 18:08Speaker 4: definitely have been the person who would be like, let
- 18:10Speaker 4: me get back to work, let me do it on
- 18:12Speaker 4: cold Yeah. I think because I did not know I
- 18:15Speaker 4: was sick for most of last year. And I looked
- 18:18Speaker 4: back on last year and I was like, all the time,
- 18:20Speaker 4: I was so tired, and I just put it down
- 18:23Speaker 4: to I'm working a lot, I'm studying a lot, Like
- 18:26Speaker 4: I'm just exhausted.
- 18:27Speaker 2: But I look back at it and.
- 18:29Speaker 4: I'm like, I was like having naps in the car
- 18:31Speaker 4: sometimes during lunch and like going home and like immediately
- 18:37Speaker 4: after work having a nap. And I also did a
- 18:40Speaker 4: bank auder of almost spending last year and spent like
- 18:43Speaker 4: I think, on average, like one hundred and fifty dollars
- 18:46Speaker 4: a week on eating out because I was just too
- 18:48Speaker 4: tired to cook and was, you know, buying breakfast on
- 18:52Speaker 4: the way into work and buying dinner on the way home.
- 18:54Speaker 4: And I was like, I can't believe that I didn't
- 18:58Speaker 4: know I had cancer, Like you know, like I just
- 19:01Speaker 4: was like convinced I was overdoing it, and I, despite that,
- 19:05Speaker 4: didn't take it easy or didn't do anything to change that.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So I think that really shifted going.
- 19:10Speaker 4: You spent like a whole year thinking you were really
- 19:13Speaker 4: tired and exhausted and overdoing it, you didn't do anything
- 19:16Speaker 4: to change that, and turns out you had cancer. Yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 4: So I think it's kind of just been a little
- 19:22Speaker 4: bit of an awakening experience of like, Okay, maybe we
- 19:27Speaker 4: have to be a bit more careful and put our
- 19:30Speaker 4: health first a bit more in the future.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I mean, it's a very dramatic way to have that reminder. Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 3: definitely very dramatic. But I like that you're prioritizing it now.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I want to know because I want to ask you
- 19:41Speaker 3: a little bit more about their goals in the future.
- 19:43Speaker 3: But I want to know now, what do you do
- 19:45Speaker 3: for work and how much money do you earn?
- 19:47Speaker 4: So I'm a finance officer for local government and at
- 19:50Speaker 4: the moment I earn about eighty nine five hundred pretax
- 19:55Speaker 4: and I actually do a pay increase to ninety six
- 19:57Speaker 4: thousand in July.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Oh yes, please, and we will be there to take that.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 20:02Speaker 3: We've got a few months, We've got a few months
- 20:05Speaker 3: to get back on track. So talk to me about
- 20:07Speaker 3: you took your sick leave and your annual eve and
- 20:10Speaker 3: all the leave that you had banked up at half
- 20:12Speaker 3: pay and it's just about to run out.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Was that enough?
- 20:17Speaker 3: Like, do you feel like you were completely sufficient? You
- 20:19Speaker 3: didn't feel like you were missing out on anything during
- 20:21Speaker 3: that period of time.
- 20:22Speaker 4: No, that was that was definitely enough. I think I
- 20:24Speaker 4: was still putting it back into savings a little bit
- 20:27Speaker 4: as well, but yeah, that's I was like able to
- 20:30Speaker 4: kind of let everything just go into an account and
- 20:32Speaker 4: everything go out without having to check my bank basically
- 20:35Speaker 4: the whole time, which was nice, Like I wasn't having
- 20:38Speaker 4: to worry about the bills or anything.
- 20:39Speaker 3: All the money was cut totally. Now, talk to me
- 20:42Speaker 3: about big money goals because I feel, like you said before,
- 20:45Speaker 3: you know, my view on life has changed, and you wrote,
- 20:48Speaker 3: I am finishing chemo with a very different definition of
- 20:51Speaker 3: what's important in life, and I feel like that's going
- 20:53Speaker 3: to change everything. So what are your big goals? What
- 20:56Speaker 3: are you working towards.
- 20:58Speaker 4: I'm definitely still considering a home too posit, but I
- 21:00Speaker 4: think that in my mind has been pushed off a
- 21:03Speaker 4: few years because I know again, like that's a major
- 21:06Speaker 4: life change and decision that can put a lot of
- 21:09Speaker 4: stress on someone and I would want to be back
- 21:12Speaker 4: into full time work before doing anything like that, So
- 21:17Speaker 4: I think like that will definitely be something that's happening
- 21:19Speaker 4: in the background and saving for that. Aside from that,
- 21:23Speaker 4: I think it's just probably like reprioritizing the budget and
- 21:29Speaker 4: having more allocated to health things and more allocated to
- 21:34Speaker 4: like life experiences. I think like the way I want
- 21:36Speaker 4: to spend my money has shifted to like experiencing life
- 21:39Speaker 4: a bit more and.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Maybe less on like materialistic to sis or things like
- 21:44Speaker 2: that as well.
- 21:45Speaker 3: No, totally, totally. All right, let's go to a really
- 21:48Speaker 3: quick break because I have so many questions and we'll
- 21:50Speaker 3: get to them in a hot minute. All right, money, dirist,
- 21:56Speaker 3: we are back, and I'm just so excited that your
- 21:59Speaker 3: last came treatment is coming up and all scans and
- 22:02Speaker 3: stuff have been looking really positive thus far. But I'm
- 22:05Speaker 3: also just so happy to hear that you had income
- 22:09Speaker 3: protection and that you had trauma insurance and that those
- 22:12Speaker 3: things were set up. How do you think you would
- 22:14Speaker 3: have felt if that wasn't a thing. So, if you'd
- 22:17Speaker 3: gotten diagnosed and there was no insurances, like nothing in
- 22:20Speaker 3: super what would have that journey looked like for you.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I was actually thinking about that the other day, and
- 22:26Speaker 5: I know, obviously I would feel a lot more pressure
- 22:30Speaker 5: to have worked alongside Chemo or to get back to
- 22:33Speaker 5: work a lot quicker.
- 22:34Speaker 4: And I think even knowing I have the insurance, before
- 22:37Speaker 4: I had confirmed that it was going to be paid out,
- 22:39Speaker 4: I was starting to feel that pressure already of just
- 22:42Speaker 4: like the what if, Like I don't know how long
- 22:44Speaker 4: I'm going to be sick for. Should I be working
- 22:46Speaker 4: when I feel good just in case. So one definitely
- 22:51Speaker 4: took the mental load off, definitely took any pressure of
- 22:54Speaker 4: having to work off. But I think the other thing
- 22:56Speaker 4: is I was really happy with the fact that, like
- 23:00Speaker 4: I had a full emergency savings, I had some investments.
- 23:04Speaker 4: I was really happy with the way my money was going,
- 23:07Speaker 4: and like the home deposits I were saving, And so
- 23:10Speaker 4: I think without this I would have had to probably
- 23:13Speaker 4: use those, I would have had to use the emergency savings.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Probably eventually that would have run out and I would
- 23:19Speaker 4: have to def into the home deposit savings or something.
- 23:22Speaker 4: So I think I'm mostly positive about the experience, but
- 23:25Speaker 4: cancer has taken a lot of experiences from me and
- 23:28Speaker 4: a lot of time away from me, and I think
- 23:32Speaker 4: it means that it didn't take away my financial progress
- 23:35Speaker 4: and my financial goals, like it hasn't put me back.
- 23:39Speaker 4: In fact, it's probably moved me forward, because yes, I've
- 23:41Speaker 4: been paid.
- 23:42Speaker 2: To have guests.
- 23:43Speaker 3: I mean, that's probably a morbid way of putting it,
- 23:45Speaker 3: And maybe people who aren't in the finance space and
- 23:49Speaker 3: have had the experiences I have had might be really
- 23:51Speaker 3: jarred with me saying that and being like, what the hell, Victoria,
- 23:54Speaker 3: that's so insensitive. I'm telling you right now, I have
- 23:57Speaker 3: never met one person going through this who isn't like, yeah,
- 24:00Speaker 3: that's a bonus.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, it is what it is.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Sometimes you've just got to call a pig a pig,
- 24:05Speaker 3: Like you've just got to be like, that's if it
- 24:07Speaker 3: walks like a duck and a quacks like a duck,
- 24:09Speaker 3: but you know what it is, it's a duck.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Like I handed over a form that said I had
- 24:14Speaker 4: cancer and someone gave me one hundred and twenty four thousand.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I mean, like we would go back in time and
- 24:18Speaker 3: not have cancer if it was an option, but it's not.
- 24:21Speaker 3: So at least we're trying to make Hey, while the
- 24:23Speaker 3: sun is shining, you know, yeah, so talk to me.
- 24:26Speaker 3: You're a finance girly through and through, like you're one
- 24:29Speaker 3: of us. What were your investments, what were you investing in?
- 24:32Speaker 3: And are you still investing?
- 24:34Speaker 4: So I haven't been actively investing for a while, but
- 24:38Speaker 4: I do have obviously my super which is about seventy
- 24:43Speaker 4: six thousand, very nice. And then I have some ETFs
- 24:47Speaker 4: in self wealth, which are about sixteen thousand, two hundred
- 24:51Speaker 4: ethical ets, some beatashes, some Vanguard, and some SMP five hundred.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Oh nice little mix.
- 24:56Speaker 4: And yeah, I hadn't been regularly investing for a while,
- 24:59Speaker 4: but I had that at ten thousand, and it's made
- 25:03Speaker 4: like a six thousand, two hundred profit.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Very nice, pretty, very nice. We like to see it.
- 25:10Speaker 3: And then you've been saving for your first home. What
- 25:13Speaker 3: kind of deposit have you got thus far?
- 25:15Speaker 4: Yep, so I had about a twenty five thousand dollars
- 25:18Speaker 4: deposit there and fifteen thousand in emergency.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Oh look at you. I was about to ask about emergency.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Look at you.
- 25:25Speaker 3: And then you've just got one hundred and twenty four
- 25:26Speaker 3: thousand sitting to the side for whatever will happen, which
- 25:31Speaker 3: ideally isn't going to cost you too much. We're hoping.
- 25:34Speaker 3: So in the grand scheme of things, I used to
- 25:36Speaker 3: always talk to my clients like, I'm hoping that you
- 25:38Speaker 3: get to keep all your trauma payment because we get
- 25:40Speaker 3: to live off our income protection. And again, for everyone
- 25:44Speaker 3: playing along at home, income protection is not one hundred
- 25:47Speaker 3: percent of your salary. It will usually be about seventy
- 25:50Speaker 3: to seventy five percent of your salary. For some policies
- 25:53Speaker 3: that might be eighty just depends on which company you're with.
- 25:56Speaker 3: For eighty is relatively rare.
- 25:58Speaker 2: What's the plan with that?
- 25:59Speaker 3: Do you think that that will be enough income protection
- 26:02Speaker 3: to mean you probably don't have to dip into that
- 26:04Speaker 3: trauma fund?
- 26:05Speaker 2: I think it should be.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Yes, So I'm really hoping that that is sorted soon,
- 26:09Speaker 4: and I have answers about that, but yeah, I definitely
- 26:12Speaker 4: think that will be enough, like I can live off that.
- 26:16Speaker 4: And then if that's the case, then the critical illness
- 26:18Speaker 4: obviously it also comes with you can.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Get financial advice reinvest you can.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Yes, So when that's all locked in and I know
- 26:27Speaker 4: that I won't have to spend too much of that,
- 26:29Speaker 4: I can go see a financial advisor and we can
- 26:31Speaker 4: get some of that invested, and yes, see what's the
- 26:35Speaker 4: best thing to do with that is, Look, if we're
- 26:36Speaker 4: going to get anything out of this, it better be
- 26:38Speaker 4: a bloody good financial position. I was going to say,
- 26:41Speaker 4: so if that's the case, in income protection, ideally recover
- 26:44Speaker 4: all of your expenses and keep you exactly on track.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Have you got plans for it?
- 26:49Speaker 3: Like do you want to invest that one twenty four
- 26:52Speaker 3: or that go to hoards a home deposit, or you
- 26:53Speaker 3: split it, or you're going on a big cruise. Who knows, Like,
- 26:56Speaker 3: have you got any big earmarks for that capital yet?
- 27:00Speaker 4: I think I would maybe keep like a tiny bit
- 27:03Speaker 4: forum deposit. But again, like I think probably the cancer
- 27:07Speaker 4: has like shifted those goals out a few years because
- 27:10Speaker 4: I just don't really want the admin of buying a
- 27:13Speaker 4: home and soon no thank you. So I think like
- 27:16Speaker 4: i'd probably want to invest most of it and have
- 27:19Speaker 4: it going like there and actively you know, generating future
- 27:22Speaker 4: income and wealth. So I think that would be the
- 27:25Speaker 4: main thing. Maybe save a little bit for a holiday,
- 27:28Speaker 4: but I think most of it get invested.
- 27:31Speaker 2: No, I love it.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I love it, and I just I'm so glad you're
- 27:34Speaker 3: going to be in a better situation. Like it's just
- 27:37Speaker 3: it's phenomenal to know that there are things that you
- 27:39Speaker 3: can put in place, even at twenty eight, to make
- 27:42Speaker 3: sure that future.
- 27:43Speaker 2: You is okay.
- 27:44Speaker 3: And it's so relatable that you were like, oh, I
- 27:47Speaker 3: got the fees and I was like, I don't even
- 27:49Speaker 3: know if I want to do this, and I'm glad
- 27:50Speaker 3: you did. But I feel like we all get that
- 27:53Speaker 3: kind of like price shock. We go, oh wait, income
- 27:56Speaker 3: protection is actually a little bit pricey, yes, but it'll
- 28:01Speaker 3: be worth it. Obviously, you're glad.
- 28:03Speaker 2: That you did it.
- 28:04Speaker 3: What will you say to other twenty six twenty seven
- 28:06Speaker 3: year olds who kind of just don't see the point.
- 28:08Speaker 3: What would you be saying to them in this moment?
- 28:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 4: I mean I've been saying to everyone now like you
- 28:13Speaker 4: need to go. You should just and I've been recommending
- 28:15Speaker 4: sky Wealth because it is just so accessible with the
- 28:18Speaker 4: like one lump sum and they do all the guesswork
- 28:21Speaker 4: for you. But I was like, you should just go,
- 28:23Speaker 4: and you should just talk to them, because I talked
- 28:26Speaker 4: to them and was like, you know what, actually, I'm
- 28:28Speaker 4: a little bit scared of how much this is.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And I think we ended up adjusting TPD down a
- 28:33Speaker 2: little bit just to make it a bit more affordable.
- 28:35Speaker 2: So I'm like, you know, just go and look into it,
- 28:38Speaker 2: because you never know what's going to happen, you don't.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And I think the week of my diagnosis, I got
- 28:43Speaker 4: an email from I think it was Taal saying you've
- 28:47Speaker 4: had cover for one year. It's like one year anniversary.
- 28:50Speaker 4: And I just couldn't believe that one year And it
- 28:53Speaker 4: was like the week of my diagnosis. So I just, yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 4: tell her and like, no, you have to you have
- 28:58Speaker 4: to go figure it out, like yeah, you know, even
- 29:01Speaker 4: just talk to the like experts who know, see if
- 29:04Speaker 4: you can get something that's more on your affordable like
- 29:06Speaker 4: just anything's better than nothing still, and be honest.
- 29:09Speaker 3: About it, like we're just people as well, Like yes,
- 29:11Speaker 3: we're financial advisors, but like we get that it's expensive.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I don't think it's I feel like a lot of
- 29:16Speaker 3: us are embarrassed to go back and be like, oh,
- 29:19Speaker 3: actually I got really shocked when I saw that price
- 29:21Speaker 3: because we don't want to talk about that because like
- 29:23Speaker 3: is that embarrassing?
- 29:24Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 29:25Speaker 3: But talk to your advisor about it. I promise they
- 29:28Speaker 3: will be like, oh my gosh, girl, I know when
- 29:30Speaker 3: I got my insurance is done, I thought they were
- 29:32Speaker 3: cooked as well, and then we can have a chat
- 29:33Speaker 3: about the levers that we can pull. Or you know,
- 29:36Speaker 3: if you have income protection and you said that you
- 29:38Speaker 3: wanted to wait sixty days to get it, maybe we
- 29:40Speaker 3: push it to ninety and the fees drop, and maybe
- 29:43Speaker 3: we push it to one hundred and twenty days and
- 29:44Speaker 3: the fees drop again. Just like your cover for trauma,
- 29:47Speaker 3: you would have adjusted it slightly and it would have
- 29:50Speaker 3: gotten cheaper. Yes, you don't get as much payout, but
- 29:53Speaker 3: like it would have been more than enough for your
- 29:55Speaker 3: situation still, because we're not going to let you go
- 29:57Speaker 3: away with incomplete insurances. But I think there's a lot
- 30:00Speaker 3: that you can do. And at the end of the day,
- 30:02Speaker 3: we're just people who want to talk you through this.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Don't let that price tag shock mean that you don't
- 30:07Speaker 3: got We and get it or implement it. And as
- 30:10Speaker 3: you were saying before, you've got your income protection frustratingly
- 30:14Speaker 3: through your super because it's a bit more of a
- 30:16Speaker 3: complex process, but that means it gets paid out of
- 30:18Speaker 3: your super, so that's not being budgeted into your weekly budget,
- 30:22Speaker 3: which is kind of a money whin.
- 30:23Speaker 4: I think, yeah, that's the thing as well, is like
- 30:25Speaker 4: it looks really scary when they're giving you all the
- 30:28Speaker 4: quotes and then like eighty percent of that is hidden
- 30:31Speaker 4: away in super and you can like turn a blind
- 30:33Speaker 4: eye to a squats.
- 30:34Speaker 3: You can pretend it's not happening. You're like, that's a
- 30:37Speaker 3: tax effective environment. So that makes sense for sure. So
- 30:41Speaker 3: talk to me, what is your best money habit?
- 30:43Speaker 2: I think that's so.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Money habit is. I've always had an emergency savings count. Sure,
- 30:49Speaker 4: I knew what an emergency savings count like, even baby
- 30:53Speaker 4: me with like first job and it was like five
- 30:55Speaker 4: thousand dollars. I was always like, there always has to
- 30:58Speaker 4: be a certain amount of money that is just like
- 31:00Speaker 4: that is for the worst case scenario. And I've just
- 31:04Speaker 4: always done that. So I think that's probably my best
- 31:06Speaker 4: money haven't And thankfully this time I haven't needed it.
- 31:08Speaker 2: But it was there.
- 31:09Speaker 3: And you know what, I want your emergency fund to
- 31:12Speaker 3: like be useless and not need it. I also want
- 31:15Speaker 3: your insurances to be the biggest waste of money you
- 31:17Speaker 3: ever spend money on, because if you've got insurances that
- 31:20Speaker 3: you're paying for and you're like look back in sixty
- 31:23Speaker 3: years and go, oh my god, Victoria as my financial advisor.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Why did you set that up?
- 31:27Speaker 3: That was such a waste? I never claimed on it. Good, Like,
- 31:30Speaker 3: that's the point. I want it to be the biggest
- 31:33Speaker 3: waste of money. But on the flip side, money, diris,
- 31:36Speaker 3: that was a pretty good investment.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Not gonna lie.
- 31:38Speaker 3: You only had to pay one year of fees before
- 31:39Speaker 3: you got one hundred and twenty four grand. Oh yea,
- 31:41Speaker 3: y yeah, that's a pretty good return.
- 31:42Speaker 2: On the investment. I think I did the math, like,
- 31:44Speaker 2: I think I was paying like one hundred and ten
- 31:46Speaker 2: dollars a month for it, so it's like, here we go.
- 31:49Speaker 2: I was like, oh wow, that was that was a
- 31:51Speaker 2: very profitable one.
- 31:52Speaker 3: You know what, We've got to make hay while the
- 31:54Speaker 3: sun's shining and kind of laugh a little bit about it,
- 31:56Speaker 3: because that's the finance side. When we are protected, can
- 32:00Speaker 3: be laughed about, but it can't be if we aren't protected.
- 32:03Speaker 3: And nothing else about this journey is funny. So we
- 32:06Speaker 3: really do have to find the tiny pockets of joy
- 32:08Speaker 3: where we can have a bit of a laugh at
- 32:11Speaker 3: literally nobody's expense except for the insurers.
- 32:13Speaker 2: My sister jokes, she's like, it's not what you can
- 32:16Speaker 2: do for cancer, it's what cancer can do for you,
- 32:18Speaker 2: you know what.
- 32:18Speaker 3: I like that I'm probably not going to use it.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I feel like you can only use it if you
- 32:23Speaker 3: have cancer.
- 32:24Speaker 2: But pop off, queen.
- 32:25Speaker 3: I'm like, you know what, Yeah, I can get things
- 32:28Speaker 3: at I know we allowed to laugh when people say that.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I think, so as the person with cancer, I say
- 32:32Speaker 2: it's okay.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, thank you for the permission, because I was like,
- 32:35Speaker 3: oh am, I meant to laugh at this, because sometimes
- 32:37Speaker 3: morbid jokes are like, we're not meant to find that funny.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Now money dires to flip it and maybe be funny again.
- 32:43Speaker 3: What's your worst money habit as a self proclaimed finance gurly, Yes, so.
- 32:47Speaker 4: I think as a finance gurly, I do have like
- 32:52Speaker 4: an overspending problem and really bad with monitoring money and
- 32:56Speaker 4: keeping a budget. But in saying that, I always make
- 33:00Speaker 4: sure my own is fund and my savings and bills
- 33:03Speaker 4: are all fed first, so good. It never put me
- 33:05Speaker 4: in a bad position. I just want to get better
- 33:08Speaker 4: at it.
- 33:09Speaker 3: But you're just self aware and you're like, I should
- 33:11Speaker 3: probably clean it up here a little bit.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Just like as someone who's been in the finance space,
- 33:17Speaker 2: I'm like, we could be doing better.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, And at the start of the episode, you said, look,
- 33:22Speaker 3: given what I know, I think I'm a B. What
- 33:24Speaker 3: would it take to get you from a B to
- 33:26Speaker 3: an A?
- 33:27Speaker 4: I mean, I think I've actually like taken some of
- 33:30Speaker 4: the time that I haven't been working when I'm feeling
- 33:33Speaker 4: good to do your budgeting MasterCards.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Oh.
- 33:37Speaker 3: I love that you're fully in the cult you went
- 33:39Speaker 3: in saw Sky Wealth got set up. You're doing my
- 33:42Speaker 3: money masterclass like the girls that get it get it
- 33:45Speaker 3: and then they get paid apparently.
- 33:46Speaker 2: And I've started the investing MasterCards.
- 33:49Speaker 4: Well, so I think definitely like going and seeing a
- 33:52Speaker 4: financial advisor and getting this one hundred k sorded will
- 33:57Speaker 4: be really good. But I think for me it's just
- 33:59Speaker 4: as that transaction back into normal life getting some routines
- 34:03Speaker 4: in place, Like I want to be back into regularly investing.
- 34:07Speaker 4: I want to be back into just knowing where my
- 34:09Speaker 4: money goes. Because yeah, when I did the banking order,
- 34:12Speaker 4: I was like, have to give myself full grace for
- 34:15Speaker 4: last year because we didn't know we had cancer for
- 34:17Speaker 4: most of the year. So when I see that I
- 34:19Speaker 4: spent a lot on like inning out, it's like, obviously
- 34:21Speaker 4: give myself grace. But I think I didn't know that
- 34:25Speaker 4: I was messed that much. So just want to be
- 34:27Speaker 4: more in the know about my money. I think would
- 34:30Speaker 4: take it to an accur Yeah, I love that.
- 34:31Speaker 3: I feel like you've got such a good level of
- 34:33Speaker 3: self reflection but also humor in this situation.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Like you are so positive.
- 34:38Speaker 3: I love it. You're like, nope, this is what the
- 34:39Speaker 3: next steps are, and like you seem so well balanced
- 34:42Speaker 3: about going. No, I really want to like transition well
- 34:44Speaker 3: back to work and like give myself grace. Like these
- 34:47Speaker 3: are all the things that I want to hear from people,
- 34:49Speaker 3: whether you've got cancer or not. Like, let's just give
- 34:52Speaker 3: ourselves a bit more grace, Like let's just let things
- 34:55Speaker 3: happen instead of going gung ho straight back into it,
- 34:58Speaker 3: because you would just burn yourself out. It'll be a
- 35:00Speaker 3: terrible recipe.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 35:02Speaker 4: No, I'm like I want to take it easy, enjoy life,
- 35:06Speaker 4: prioritize friends, family, enjoying things like even things like just
- 35:11Speaker 4: going to the beach. I haven't been able to swim
- 35:13Speaker 4: or go to the beach, so I'm just like just
- 35:15Speaker 4: go and enjoy life and take things easy.
- 35:17Speaker 3: When you found out in September, so you had to
- 35:20Speaker 3: have the full cancer stuff happen over the Christmas New
- 35:23Speaker 3: Year period where it was like the best time like
- 35:27Speaker 3: weather wise.
- 35:28Speaker 2: That's extra root, isn't it.
- 35:29Speaker 4: I know the whole summer and you're no no pool
- 35:32Speaker 4: but no beach, and you're more UV sensitive as well,
- 35:35Speaker 4: and I lay pale is a ghost.
- 35:38Speaker 2: So already you've you.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Know what, you're going to have flawless skin for staying
- 35:41Speaker 3: inside for so long, you're aging backwards.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure chemo has been great for my skin.
- 35:46Speaker 3: It's you know, it's the quote you used before.
- 35:48Speaker 2: It's not what you can do for cancer, right Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 4: So yeah, as soon as I'm super well and immunity good,
- 35:54Speaker 4: I must travel to wherever it has summer and enjoy summer.
- 35:58Speaker 3: I think you deserve that absolutely.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I have loved getting to know you, getting to know
- 36:03Speaker 3: your story. I just feel like I want to be
- 36:05Speaker 3: your best friend already, Like your just vibe is one
- 36:08Speaker 3: thousand percent my vibe, Like you're just so fun and
- 36:11Speaker 3: nice and just all of those things. So thank you
- 36:14Speaker 3: for sharing your story and being so open about it,
- 36:16Speaker 3: because it is hard to talk about. Like I know
- 36:18Speaker 3: that we've had a bit of a laugh during this,
- 36:20Speaker 3: but this is really bloody rough and it is not
- 36:22Speaker 3: something that I wish on anybody. And I'm just I'm
- 36:25Speaker 3: so glad that your chemo is wrapping up, and I'm
- 36:27Speaker 3: so glad that all of your scans to date have
- 36:29Speaker 3: been showing nothing, and I'm hoping that that's exactly how
- 36:32Speaker 3: they stay. But it is not a miss on me
- 36:34Speaker 3: that this has probably been rough to talk about, and
- 36:37Speaker 3: I just I really appreciate it, and I know that
- 36:39Speaker 3: my community is going to be so grateful to his
- 36:41Speaker 3: stories like this, and just knowing that hopefully even one
- 36:44Speaker 3: more person goes and gets their stuff sorted and they're
- 36:47Speaker 3: going to be protected when this happens, just makes it
- 36:50Speaker 3: all worthwhile.
- 36:51Speaker 2: So thank you so much. Well, thank you so much.
- 36:53Speaker 2: It was definitely a story like this that commits me
- 36:55Speaker 2: to go get it.
- 36:56Speaker 4: So I really hope someone else goes and sorts out
- 36:58Speaker 4: their insurances, helps them or it doesn't help them me too.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Also, be good.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I want you to waste your money, hopefully go give
- 37:06Speaker 3: it all to sky Welf and then never look back.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Yes, I love it. Thank you so much. It's so
- 37:12Speaker 2: good to me.
