- 0:06in your marriage A good first step towards a no-closed-doors marriage is to
- 0:10grant access to the rooms that hold your past.
- 0:13Odds are, much of what you have not shared is painful or embarrassing.
- 0:17But some couples just don't share much of their past, painful or otherwise.
- 0:21Some say, my past is none of my spouse's business.
- 0:24This is often an attempt to hide things that they don't want to share.
- 0:28But some folks think the past belongs in
- 0:30the past and don't share for that reason But god
- 0:33says that we are to become one and we can't do that if we
- 0:36keep things hidden As I have said many times who
- 0:39we are today has been significantly shaped by our
- 0:42past Seeing your past helps your spouse understand
- 0:45you It should give them grace for some of your struggles It might even moderate
- 0:50how they treat you as they understand how they may have triggered you Start
- 0:54with happy and fun stuff open up your childhood Revealing more and more as you
- 0:58feel safe When you discuss things you've never talked about It may be difficult,
- 1:03Tears or not knowing how to share are normal and just fine You may uncover anger
- 1:08you didn't know was there Or fear you had buried Such things are part of why
- 1:12doing this work is good for you Painful, but good,
- 1:16As you open these doors, you'll inevitably encounter the people who shaped what is in those rooms.
- 1:21Try to be fair and honest about the people in your past. Heroes are always imperfect,
- 1:25and villains usually have some redeeming qualities and reasons for grace.
- 1:29Remember, telling the truth about what a person said or did is not disrespectful.
- 1:34You may see things long locked away differently now than you did when you were
- 1:38younger. Some of this change is due to the passage of time.
- 1:42Additionally, you understand life better now than you did in the past,
- 1:45especially when you were young.
- 1:47Explore changes in perception. It may bring revelation or healing.
- 1:51It might also open up negative feelings you need to deal with.
- 1:54All this can lead to personal health and growth.
- 1:57Opening your past to your spouse is good for them, but also for you,
- 2:01and it will make your marriage stronger.
- 2:03Looking for a practical way to start? Have a history date night,
- 2:07where you each share three happy rooms and one not-so-good room from your childhood.
- 2:11This is Paul, and sharing your past makes your future much brighter. Yeah.
