Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / The 9 Stages Your Clients Go Through Before Saying Yes
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs.
- 0:06I'm your host and the founder and CEO of Mylance.
- 0:10Today's episode I'm really excited about because we're
- 0:13going to talk about what your buyer experience is actually
- 0:18like and then map it to how you need to show up to actually
- 0:24attract and eventually close that client.
- 0:27So we're going to jump right in. So when we think about the B to
- 0:32B buyer, who is your buyer right there?
- 0:34The founder, the business owner, maybe AC level or high vice
- 0:39president, you know, SVP kind of role.
- 0:42What are they thinking, seeing, feeling in their own words?
- 0:47And so we're going to walk through all of the steps that
- 0:49happened from I've never heard about you to I'm buying from
- 0:53you. So the first touch is probably a
- 0:58random encounter where a friend mentions your name, or they see
- 1:02your name as like a comment on a LinkedIn post, someone
- 1:05references you in a Slack community or your company, or
- 1:08maybe they scroll past one of your LinkedIn posts.
- 1:11They barely even notice it and the internal dialogue is like
- 1:14barely even noticing you exist, right?
- 1:17Like who's this? Never seen them before, Like not
- 1:19important, whatever, right? They're busy, they're
- 1:22overwhelmed and you're really just like a flicker the next.
- 1:26And this is not to be insulting, it's just probably true.
- 1:28It's just how it goes. The next stage would be they see
- 1:33you again. Maybe they see you in another
- 1:35LinkedIn post, another comment, somebody else mentions you or
- 1:38your company. Maybe someone shares a post of
- 1:41yours or replies to a comment. And now you're they're building
- 1:44a little bit of familiarity. They're like, oh, I've seen this
- 1:47before. They're talking about the same
- 1:50thing or they're referenced in a similar vein, but they're still
- 1:54not overly interested. You're kind of, you're kind of
- 1:56like, you know, you're not random and there's a tiny signal
- 1:59forming, forming, but there's not like a, oh, I need to talk
- 2:02to this person. It's like, oh, there's just a
- 2:03little bit of repeated exposure. The third step is there's
- 2:09something that triggers more curiosity because they've seen
- 2:12what you do based on those first two touch points and now there's
- 2:17a problem in their business. So something breaks or they miss
- 2:21a target, maybe they feel stuck and they're, they think back to,
- 2:25oh, like I remember this person or this company was talking
- 2:28about this problem. Let me go take a look.
- 2:31So they might go check out your LinkedIn profile or skim a few
- 2:34posts that you wrote, make maybe take a quick glance at your
- 2:38website and they probably have that tab open and totally forget
- 2:43about it. And the internal dialogue is
- 2:45like, do they actually work with me?
- 2:47Do they, can they get any results?
- 2:49Do they actually understand the problem?
- 2:52Is this legitimate? So there's like some micro
- 2:55curiosity there. They're not at the evaluating
- 2:58stage yet, but they're starting to think like maybe there could
- 3:01be something here. Maybe this person could solve my
- 3:04problem. But again, they probably leave
- 3:06the tab open and they forget about it.
- 3:09Stage 4 is they see something from you that adds value, that
- 3:14starts to hit on that problem that they are experiencing.
- 3:18So it could be an audit or a guide.
- 3:21Maybe you're hosting a workshop, some sort of template, or maybe
- 3:24your newsletter addresses the topic that they're struggling
- 3:28with. And they think to themselves,
- 3:29OK, like this is relevant to me. What do I have to lose by giving
- 3:34my e-mail or signing up or seeing what this, you know,
- 3:37guide has to offer? Let me throw in my e-mail and
- 3:40just like see how legitimate this is.
- 3:42So there's no real buying intent, but they're starting to
- 3:46explore. So that is stage 4.
- 3:50Now they've given you their e-mail and this is stage 5 where
- 3:55they are kind of lurking to see how legitimate you are.
- 4:00They're waiting until there's an offer that nails it for them.
- 4:04So they might skim your emails if you have an e-mail campaign
- 4:08drip, they're noticing your LinkedIn post more and they're
- 4:10reading them a little bit more intently to see like, is there
- 4:13something here? They're noticing some patterns
- 4:16and they're really comparing their situation to what you
- 4:18solve, right? They're like, can this person,
- 4:20can this company solve my problem?
- 4:22Are they going to be a good fit for me?
- 4:24And they're starting to relate more and more to your content of
- 4:27like, this makes sense. This makes sense.
- 4:30I like how they explain things. Maybe I'm not quite ready, but
- 4:34like this is starting to get really interesting.
- 4:36And internally they're they're being warmed up.
- 4:40So they're not quite ready to take action, but their mindset
- 4:42is like, OK, you know, there's something here.
- 4:46I'm ready to learn more. I'm ready to, I'm open to the
- 4:50right offer. Step 6 is what shifts to this,
- 4:55this person being a buyer. And it's when there's that big
- 5:00trigger in their company, like some sort of crisis or, you
- 5:04know, a deadline missed, a costly mistake, the realization
- 5:08they're spending way too much money solving this problem.
- 5:11They fire somebody, a competitor beats them to something.
- 5:15And all of a sudden their pain that they've been experiencing
- 5:17for the first five stages has become real.
- 5:21And it's become significant and it's become a top priority.
- 5:25And internally, they're like, shoot, I don't have the
- 5:27resources to solve this myself. I need to fix this.
- 5:31I need someone I can trust. I need someone who understands
- 5:34this problem deeply. And they think of you because
- 5:38you've been in their feed, you've been in their inbox, now
- 5:41that you've been nurturing them, right?
- 5:43And there's been multiple touch points.
- 5:46This is the sixth touch point that they have with you.
- 5:50So now they're ready for a conversation.
- 5:53They're ready to say, hey, I have this problem.
- 5:55I need it to be solved. I've seen you.
- 5:57You sound like you know what you're talking about.
- 5:59Can we talk? So step 7 is they book a call,
- 6:03they reply to an e-mail, they DM you, they click on your calendar
- 6:07link and or they ask for an introduction and they're like,
- 6:10you know, I'm hoping this person gets it.
- 6:12It seems like they do. I'll see you on the phone.
- 6:14I'll see if it's a good fit. And so stage 8 is where they're
- 6:18on that call with you and they're thinking like, OK,
- 6:22they're validating all of those questions, those hypothesis,
- 6:25those assumptions of are they going to be worth the money?
- 6:30Are they going to be worth the investment?
- 6:31Is this worth my time, energy, money that they are actually
- 6:34going to solve this problem for me and will they make me look
- 6:39good? Will they will this be worth the
- 6:42emotional and operational cost? And then whether if they buy on
- 6:45the call, amazing after the call, it's do I feel safe moving
- 6:50forward? Right.
- 6:51So they're they're they're basically saying, do you solve
- 6:56the problem for me? And do you did you make it easy
- 6:59for me to say yes? Like is there an easy offer that
- 7:02I can just you know it like, let's go, let's make this, let's
- 7:05make this happen. And the last is trust.
- 7:10It's all about trust. Like is it, am I sure that if I
- 7:15pay this person the money or do I have a really good level of
- 7:18confidence? If I pay this person the money,
- 7:21they are going to deliver and I'm going to look good, my
- 7:25company's going to look good, and we are no longer going to
- 7:27have this issue. The internal dialogue is, does
- 7:30this feel right? Does this solve the problem?
- 7:33Is this something I'm just ready to move forward on and stop
- 7:35dealing with? Is this going to get rid of the
- 7:38pain point? That's really what it's about.
- 7:40Does this get rid of the pain point?
- 7:42The decision is always emotional 1st and rational second.
- 7:47So those are the 9 stages that your buyer is going through,
- 7:52which means you need to have all of those things in place so that
- 7:57you hit them that many times in that many ways and navigate the
- 8:01emotional journey from I've never heard about you to I'm
- 8:07buying from you. So let's go to the company side.
- 8:10This is your side. Like this is what you need to
- 8:13have in place. So step one is presence.
- 8:18You get to show up in multiple different places consistently
- 8:23over time. Showing up once, 2 * 10 * 20
- 8:26times is not enough. You got to be showing up every
- 8:30week for months and months and months on end.
- 8:33That's just what's required. You got to find a way to do
- 8:35that. So daily LinkedIn content, DMS,
- 8:39comments and other people's stuff, participation in
- 8:42communities, all with a consistent point of view.
- 8:45Or you have to have clarity in the pain points that you solve
- 8:49so that they are building the right kind of familiarity with
- 8:53you. So the objective is to be
- 8:56visible enough that a stranger can stumble into you.
- 9:01That's stage 1. Stage 2, you're not going to be
- 9:04surprised. It is recognition consistently
- 9:08over time. So you want to be talking about
- 9:10the same problem over and over and over again and relatively
- 9:14the same language with slightly different angles, but
- 9:18consistency over time so that this repetition going super deep
- 9:24in one topic is building that trust that we talked about.
- 9:28So you move from a random person that they've never heard of to
- 9:321:00 where they're really starting to build in that
- 9:35familiarity. Then stage 3, this is something
- 9:39tangible to have in place is your profile.
- 9:42And if you have a website, your homepage, you have to pass the
- 9:4610 second test, which is does your LinkedIn profile and your
- 9:50homepage, if you have one, answer who you help, what
- 9:54problem you solve for them, the outcome you create and proof
- 10:00you've done it. I'm going to say those again in
- 10:02case you're in the car, who you help, what problem you solve,
- 10:07the outcome you generate, and proof that you've done it.
- 10:11It doesn't need to be clever. It doesn't need to be fancy.
- 10:13It just needs to be clear and legible.
- 10:15That's it. Concise, clear, legible.
- 10:17You probably got 10 seconds with that person.
- 10:21After that, you need a lead magnet that actually adds value.
- 10:27A lead magnet is simply saying I will give you some free value in
- 10:31exchange for your contact information and the free value.
- 10:35You don't need to go crazy. It could be a free consultation
- 10:38call, right? It could say I'm going to offer
- 10:411520 minutes of my time to teach you something that's going to
- 10:44add value. It could be a newsletter, it
- 10:46could be an ebook, it could be a guide, it could be a webinar or
- 10:49workshop. Lots of options here.
- 10:51You want the lead magnet to align with the problem that you
- 10:55solve, right? So if you're a marketing
- 10:57analytics expert, you could do you know a free guide on like
- 11:00the best dashboard you ever built, right?
- 11:02Just as an example or, or a guide to making that dashboard
- 11:05or something like that. And when you collect their
- 11:09e-mail right now, stage 5, you can nurture them.
- 11:14It's a clean, simple, nurturing sequence of who you are, what
- 11:19problems you solve. Like teach them things, continue
- 11:22to add value, right? So stories, examples, insights.
- 11:26No spam here, right? Certainly just clear, concise
- 11:30value added emails where you stay top of mind and you have
- 11:34clear call to action. So if they want to jump on a
- 11:36call with you, they certainly can.
- 11:39Stage 6 is being there when the trigger hits like we talked
- 11:44about stage 6 at the beginning of this is something happens
- 11:48where they feel that pain and you are right there to say, hey,
- 11:53I got you covered. I'm going to be the one that
- 11:56solves this pain for you. So that's, that's where the
- 11:58consistency is key that enables them to get in touch with you.
- 12:03So you can obviously just have your calendly in your LinkedIn
- 12:06profile and your content will just be the thing that drives
- 12:09them there eventually. But I'd also recommend sending
- 12:12some sort of regular cadence as I, we send a newsletter every
- 12:16week, right? And the newsletter always has a
- 12:19clear call to action to book time with me, right?
- 12:22So sending something consistently where they can book
- 12:24time with you and actually get on the phone.
- 12:27And that's stage 7 frictionless call booking.
- 12:30So simple calendar calendly link, make sure you have time
- 12:34slots available, maybe a few questions just to make sure that
- 12:37they're the right fit for the call, and a thank you message
- 12:41that sets expectations. Really, really, really simple.
- 12:43And you want enough information here to start the conversation.
- 12:48Well, so I ask in my calendly a few questions that are going to
- 12:52help me take the sales call where I want to go to address
- 12:56their concerns, to talk about the value that we create.
- 13:00One of those questions I asked like how important do you
- 13:03believe LinkedIn content is to your business?
- 13:06And if they don't think it's important at all, then I know
- 13:10we're starting at a place of like, why are we even on the
- 13:13call? We help you with LinkedIn
- 13:15content. If you don't think it's
- 13:15important, like why are we here? Maybe you're trying to have me
- 13:18convince you it's important, but I'm not going to do that.
- 13:20I want to work with people that already know it's important.
- 13:24So anyway, frictionless call booking is stage 7.
- 13:27Stage 8 is the sales call itself.
- 13:30And this is not a pitch. It is the opposite of a pitch.
- 13:34It is where you are asking about their problem.
- 13:36You are getting clarity into their problem.
- 13:38You are being curious and you are then seeing if there's an
- 13:43opportunity to solve their problem.
- 13:46And frankly, by you asking really good questions, that's
- 13:49going to be the best quote UN quote pitch you could ever do.
- 13:52So keep this simple. Do if you need to do sales
- 13:55training because you don't know how to do this, do sales
- 13:56training. But the best way to do sales is
- 14:00to ask really, really, really good questions.
- 14:03Stage 9 is clean follow up. So follow up after the call
- 14:06summary in their words. You can use AI for this, at
- 14:09least for a draft and send a proposal.
- 14:12And this is where you make it as easy as possible for them to say
- 14:15yes. So after all of these steps,
- 14:19right? You are just saying like, you
- 14:20know what, I've already built a trust, I built a legitimacy and
- 14:23all you are doing is saying yes. So this was a just clean and
- 14:31clear. This is their journey.
- 14:33This is what you need to have in place and the end of the day, if
- 14:38you aren't creating something like this, right, you have to do
- 14:41something. Otherwise you're just, you have
- 14:44the the prey approach that clients fall in your lap and
- 14:47that will work for a period of time and then it will almost
- 14:50certainly stop. So you get to have a robot
- 14:53system that aligns with what the buyer journey is actually like.
- 14:59With that, we're going to wrap this episode up.
