- 0:00When you hear the words self-care, what comes to mind?
- 0:04Maybe you're thinking of a hot bubble bath or a great massage,
- 0:09maybe a relaxing pedicure or girls weekend.
- 0:13I mean, those things can be wonderful, but I think we've unintentionally
- 0:17turned self-care into something that we would earn
- 0:21after we have taken care of everyone around us.
- 0:25So what if we've been looking at it all wrong? What if
- 0:29self-care isn't a reward? What if it's actually
- 0:32one of the healthiest boundaries that we can build?
- 0:37If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering
- 0:41why peace still feels so hard to hold on to,
- 0:45you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Lori, mom,
- 0:48former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach.
- 0:51Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier
- 0:55boundaries, and get clear on what actually matters so
- 0:59that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more satisfying.
- 1:03So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath,
- 1:07and get into this next episode.
- 1:12Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms. I am your host, Lori Grimes,
- 1:16and today I want to talk about something that I think many of us are
- 1:20struggling with. So as moms, we're often the first ones
- 1:24to sacrifice ourselves. We've talked about that several times here on
- 1:27the podcast. We are the first ones to skip sleep. We are the
- 1:31first ones to not get our steps in.
- 1:34We're gonna rush through dinner, rush through lunch.
- 1:37We will put off our quiet time with God that we promised ourselves
- 1:41we were gonna do. And we keep just saying yes to everyone else
- 1:45while continuing to say no to ourselves. And then one
- 1:49day we wonder why we're tired or exhausted,
- 1:53we're feeling overwhelmed, impatient, we're snapping at
- 1:57the kids and the husband, and we're just emotionally
- 2:01checked out. Does this sound familiar at all? So I
- 2:04don't think that's because we're weak, guys. I think it's because
- 2:08we've crossed one of the most most important
- 2:12boundaries we can have, which is an internal boundary.
- 2:17And an internal boundary is taking responsibility
- 2:22for stewarding the body, mind, emotions, and spirit
- 2:27God has entrusted to us. So no one else
- 2:31can consistently do that for us, right? Your spouse can't
- 2:35get the sleep for you, right? And your children are not going to go in
- 2:39and get that exercise knocked out for you. Your friends can't do
- 2:44that alone time with God for you, right? So no one else
- 2:48can continually replenish what you're
- 2:51unwilling to replenish yourself. So while God
- 2:55often uses other people to encourage us and care for
- 2:59us, it isn't someone else's responsibility
- 3:03to manage our well-being. That is a part of our
- 3:08stewardship. So have you ever heard of the financial advice
- 3:12to pay yourself first? So in finance,
- 3:16you're supposed to be making this intentional deposit
- 3:22before you go and spend on everything else.
- 3:26Okay, you're supposed to pay yourself first. So that might be like putting money
- 3:30in investment account and a Roth IRA and your 401.
- 3:34But I think it's the same principle that applies to our lives around self-care.
- 3:38Healthy boundaries means making regular
- 3:42deposits before expecting yourself to
- 3:46be making withdrawals. So that might look like time with God
- 3:50as a deposit, or getting enough sleep as a deposit. Maybe you're
- 3:55going to move and get your certain steps in a day, and that's a deposit.
- 3:59Or Taking care of yourself by eating the foods that are nourishing
- 4:03to you or on a food plan of some sort, that is
- 4:07making a deposit. Or how about just being quiet, just getting
- 4:11some time to be quiet and restore
- 4:14yourself. So healthy relationships are even deposits.
- 4:19So times, times we spend with our girlfriends are
- 4:23very important to our boundaries and Rest
- 4:27is a deposit. We really do need to
- 4:30get the proper sleep. And laughter,
- 4:34guys, is a deposit. That's one of my favorite parts is
- 4:38laughter. So when life asks something of us,
- 4:42we're constantly making these withdrawals. And the problem is that many
- 4:46of us are making withdrawals all day long without
- 4:50intentionally making those deposits. So the
- 4:54account runs dry, right? If you keep pulling out money and you
- 4:59don't ever make a deposit, your bank's gonna run dry.
- 5:02So sometimes I think we're just doing fine because we're
- 5:05functioning, right? We're staying above water, we're treading
- 5:10the water, but we're still helping, we're still volunteering,
- 5:13we're still working, we're still taking care of
- 5:17our kids and everyone around us. But eventually our body
- 5:20starts talking back, right? We start to feel
- 5:24that impatience bubble up or we're going to snap
- 5:27here at our kids because we're at our limit. We're feeling that
- 5:31resentment. We're losing patience with our spouse.
- 5:35Our anxiety starts to skyrocket. Our exhaustion
- 5:39is just a normal way of life. And those reactions
- 5:43aren't always signs that we're failing.
- 5:46Sometimes they're just signals. And we've talked about, you know,
- 5:50the warning signals that come on, on an instrument board
- 5:53on your car. Like, that's the warning telling us, hey, something is
- 5:57about to go really wrong with your car. So our bodies often
- 6:01are keeping score, and they recognize that depletion
- 6:06before our minds even do. So the other night, I went
- 6:10out with my friends, and we had a wonderful night celebrating one of my
- 6:14best friend's husband's birthday, and we had such a great
- 6:18night. We laughed, we talked, we stayed out later than we normally would,
- 6:22and I didn't get a whole lot of sleep. And now, spending time with
- 6:25my friends, it is a good thing. It is a definite positive
- 6:29thing, and community is definitely a gift from God. But the
- 6:34next morning, like, I had a choice. I could pretend that
- 6:38nothing had changed and push— and just push through my weekend. I could fill
- 6:42up my schedule. I could run these errands. I could work harder
- 6:45and squeeze everything in on my to-do list and ignore the fact
- 6:49that I was depleted. I had used a lot of my resources,
- 6:54but I could recognize that I made a withdrawal.
- 6:58It was a good withdrawal, one that was absolutely
- 7:01worth it, but it was still a withdrawal. And that meant I
- 7:05needed to make some deposits. So maybe that looked
- 7:09like just slowing my pace down. Maybe it was just
- 7:13I needed to choose nourishing food instead of whatever
- 7:17would be easiest to get, like fast food. Maybe it meant just
- 7:21getting to bed earlier that night or going for a walk
- 7:24instead of scrolling on my phone or doing an intense workout.
- 7:28Maybe it was just creating a little margin instead of filling
- 7:33every single hour. So years ago, I probably would have just pushed harder.
- 7:36I would have ignored the fact that I was depleted.
- 7:40I would have just said, I'll catch up later, and I would have ignored
- 7:43all the signs that my body was trying to yell at me.
- 7:47But what I've learned, that wisdom doesn't simply
- 7:52ask, what am I capable of doing today?
- 7:55Wisdom is asking you, given what we've already spent,
- 8:00what would be the healthiest investment that I can
- 8:04make today. And that, guys, is what an internal boundary
- 8:08looks like. So many of the things we are pushing and
- 8:12pushing ourselves to do are great and good things,
- 8:16right? Serving is good. Working is good.
- 8:19Exercise is definitely good. Being productive
- 8:23is good. And helping others is good. And hanging out
- 8:27with friends is obviously good. But even good things become unwise
- 8:31when they're consistently ignoring the limits God has designed
- 8:35for us to have. So we don't want to wait until the engine
- 8:39seizes and the car doesn't work right before changing the
- 8:43oil. We don't want to wait until we got a negative
- 8:47balance in our bank account before we think about like putting some
- 8:51money in there, right? And we don't wait until we're severely
- 8:55dehydrated before we drink water. So healthy boundaries
- 8:59are meant to be preventative, preventative maintenance.
- 9:03So kind of like a car, right? And the truth is most
- 9:06of us are already knowing what we should be doing. We just don't
- 9:11always protect it. So research shows that
- 9:14about 3 in 10 adults don't get the
- 9:18recommended 7 or more hours of sleep each night.
- 9:22That's a lot of people not getting sleep. Another study
- 9:26found that 77% of Americans say
- 9:30getting enough sleep is very important, yet only about 1/3
- 9:34believe they're actually doing it well. And the same study found that
- 9:3857% say regular exercise is very
- 9:42important, but fewer than 1 in 3 feel like they're doing well
- 9:46at maintaining it. So the problem isn't that we don't value these
- 9:50things, we acknowledge them. The problem is that we're not protecting
- 9:53them. We're not protecting appointments or deadlines.
- 9:57We're just protecting everybody else's needs if we're being honest.
- 10:00But we don't always protect the very habits that
- 10:05allow us to show up as our healthiest selves.
- 10:09And that's why I believe self-care isn't a luxury. It's not
- 10:14being selfish and it isn't something that
- 10:17you earn after everyone else's needs have been met. It's an internal
- 10:21boundary. It's stewardship. Preventative boundaries are
- 10:26simply just making regular deposits before your account is empty.
- 10:29When we protect those deposits, like our sleep and our time
- 10:33with God, eating the right food, movement, rest,
- 10:36and our healthy relationships, we're able to give from an abundance
- 10:41and overflowing instead of obligation.
- 10:45So internal boundaries also help us stay in our
- 10:49God-given lane. So what do I mean by that? They remind
- 10:54us what belongs to God and what belongs to other people and what
- 10:58belongs to us. So Romans 12:3 says,
- 11:01for by the grace given me, I say to
- 11:05every one of you, do not think of yourself more highly
- 11:09than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment,
- 11:14in accordance with the faith God has distributed to
- 11:17each of you. So God gives us each a measure of
- 11:21faith and grace and strength that we are going to need for
- 11:26what He called us to do. But when we step outside
- 11:29the boundaries, trying to fix everyone and carry everyone's feelings
- 11:34and emotions, or take responsibility for choices
- 11:37that belong to someone else, we begin to
- 11:41rely on our own strength instead of His
- 11:45strength. So sometimes we're depleted or exhausted,
- 11:50not because God's asked too much of us, but because we took
- 11:54on things He never asked us to carry. And one of the healthiest internal
- 11:59boundaries we can have is knowing where our responsibility
- 12:04ends and where God's begins. And sometimes
- 12:08we hear the words self-care and immediately we're like,
- 12:11oh, that's selfish. But Scripture is painting a totally
- 12:15different picture. So here in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20,
- 12:19Paul writes this: Do you not know that your
- 12:23bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit
- 12:27who is in you, whom you have received from God?
- 12:32You are not your own. You are bought. You were bought with a
- 12:35price. Therefore, honor God with your body. So taking
- 12:39care of yourself isn't putting yourself above everybody
- 12:42else. It's honoring what God has entrusted to you.
- 12:46So when we constantly care for ourselves,
- 12:50we are able to love from abundance instead of this obligatory
- 12:55mess that we get into. So we're less likely to become
- 13:00bitter or resentful. We're not going to burn out so easily.
- 13:04We're less likely to give because we're doing it out of guilt
- 13:08or we think that we have the shoulds. Instead, we're just
- 13:11giving from a place of like health and joy and overflow. Doesn't that
- 13:15sound way better and a lot more peaceful?
- 13:19So this week I want you to ask yourself one simple
- 13:22question, okay? Where am I making constant
- 13:26withdrawals without making enough deposits?
- 13:30So for you, it may be sleep, it could be time
- 13:34with God, it could be just getting enough movement or exercise
- 13:38in. Maybe it's making a meal plan or prepping your food
- 13:42or just picking out what dinners will be for the week. Maybe it's rest.
- 13:46Just choose one area this week, just one, and protect it
- 13:50like a boundary, like You've got a line around it. Protect it
- 13:54because it is— there's a boundary that should be around it.
- 13:57And remember, healthy boundaries aren't only about
- 14:01saying no to other people. Sometimes they're about finally
- 14:05saying yes to the stewardship God has called you to
- 14:09practice in your own life.
