- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud your
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. I'm sick today, but
- 1:04Speaker 2: we're still showing up so that next week the rest
- 1:07Speaker 2: of the team will also be sick. Today, my friends,
- 1:10Speaker 2: is Friday, which means it is time to get my
- 1:12Speaker 2: little soon to be sick team together and celebrate you
- 1:16Speaker 2: our incredible She's on the Money community Today, Mis j
- 1:19Speaker 2: Just Grich is going to be sharing our favorite money
- 1:21Speaker 2: wins and confessions from the community. Miss Bech Sayed is
- 1:24Speaker 2: going to be sharing her broke tips and our newest jingle.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We're going to be helping to answer juicy money dilemma,
- 1:30Speaker 2: which this week is all about how to just start saving.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And we're going to be unpacking something that you slid
- 1:36Speaker 2: into our DMS about and this week we're talking about
- 1:38Speaker 2: whether you should prioritize a good culture at work over
- 1:42Speaker 2: a good salary. Miss Bech sayed, how has your week been?
- 1:47Speaker 4: High?
- 1:47Speaker 1: V D?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Good? Good week?
- 1:49Speaker 5: What have I done? I can't remember it better? I
- 1:51Speaker 5: think you can't remember it. No, it's been really quiet.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Actually it's been a real quiet, chill, wholesome week.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You know that's good. Sometimes juice, no juice at all.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I'm going to try and talk as little as possible
- 2:03Speaker 2: in this episode because I sound terrible. Oh gosh, ten
- 2:07Speaker 2: out of ten can recommend. I'm not even actually sick.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I just had croup and I have a what would
- 2:14Speaker 2: you say, a remnants of croup cough or very attractive
- 2:19Speaker 2: if you're thinking, wow, V I thought that only Toddler's
- 2:22Speaker 2: got croup.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Gone wrong?
- 2:24Speaker 2: You thought wrong? Toddler's and Miss Victoria Divine get croup.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's very attractive.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Jessica, how have you been this week I've been good
- 2:33Speaker 7: just bopping along. I had so much fun this morning
- 2:37Speaker 7: because we got to test our friend Sammy's new workout regime.
- 2:41Speaker 7: And I've said before not a Jim Gurley right, not
- 2:45Speaker 7: the vibe, not for me very I.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Did convince you one time to do a pilates class
- 2:50Speaker 2: via zoom during lockdown.
- 2:52Speaker 7: This is a vibe that Sammy's thing gives me because
- 2:54Speaker 7: there's a whole forty five minute thirteen song workout and so,
- 2:59Speaker 7: like I have, I'm sore today, I ache, I really
- 3:02Speaker 7: am in a lot of pain. But I bought the
- 3:04Speaker 7: thing because friends port friends and buy their friends stuff.
- 3:06Speaker 7: You don't expect it for free. And I had a
- 3:08Speaker 7: lot of fun and I'm so excited looking forward to
- 3:10Speaker 7: getting back into exercising again without feeling embarrassed. And there's
- 3:14Speaker 7: heaps of other stuff on there, but yeah, little plug,
- 3:16Speaker 7: she's our friend.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Oh good, And it's a lot of fun.
- 3:19Speaker 7: If you're someone who just likes to dance around and
- 3:21Speaker 7: you lounge and have a good time and call that exercise,
- 3:24Speaker 7: you know what it is.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, she's an absolute legend. We'll actually put a link
- 3:27Speaker 2: in our show notes so that you can still love that. Yeah, Well,
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean it wasn't so that she could love it.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It was actually so that our community could love on her. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and so we can find it easily. Do you know what.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I had a bit of a conundrum this week. I
- 3:39Speaker 2: had a lot of email replies to our newsletter last Friday.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So today is Friday, which means that about lunchtime, probably
- 3:45Speaker 2: more close to three pm. Because that's how I roll
- 3:48Speaker 2: at the moment, I will send out our newsletter. And
- 3:50Speaker 2: last week I did the same thing. I was sitting
- 3:52Speaker 2: on the plane on the way back from Sydney and
- 3:54Speaker 2: I was like smashing out the newsletter and I thought
- 3:56Speaker 2: I was so funny because this week I recommended my
- 3:59Speaker 2: favorite food, which you do will know is frozen mashed potatoes,
- 4:03Speaker 2: absolutely amazing, and I was trying to sell the community
- 4:06Speaker 2: on them real hard. I was like, they are the
- 4:09Speaker 2: best thing in this entire world, right, and if you
- 4:12Speaker 2: haven't subscribed to our newsletter, well you're in for a shock.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It's not that much about financial literacy. It's relatively rogue. Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 2: we recap the week that was, Yeah, we have money
- 4:22Speaker 2: tips and tricks, but there's also Victoria's unsolicited recommendation where
- 4:27Speaker 2: it's very unsolicited, and to be honest, my aim with
- 4:30Speaker 2: that is to waste as much of your time as possible.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So fun way, yeah, in a fun way. And you
- 4:35Speaker 2: know what, I've probably had fifteen dms this week from
- 4:37Speaker 2: people being like, ve these spash potatoes changed my life,
- 4:41Speaker 2: and I'm like, I know, that's why I recommended it.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But at the end of that recommendation I said that
- 4:47Speaker 2: I had been eating it with a side of dead horse.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I can see how that would confuse a lot of it.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Ah.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And so we've had aren't you a vegan? Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 2: we've had a fifty plus email response from people being
- 5:00Speaker 2: like the not only did we think that you didn't
- 5:03Speaker 2: eat meat, but also horseting choice.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Interesting choice, and to confirm that it is in fact dead.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And I was very confused because I thought it was
- 5:16Speaker 2: just a term that everyone's, you know, parental figure used
- 5:19Speaker 2: to refer to tomato sauce. Is this something that I
- 5:24Speaker 2: had just been living and nobody else had been living
- 5:27Speaker 2: or had you heard of the concept of dead horse
- 5:31Speaker 2: being tomato sauce? No?
- 5:33Speaker 5: I had never you my dad had.
- 5:35Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure it's Cockney, which is English, and my
- 5:38Speaker 7: dad is English, so that might be yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 2: The writing slang.
- 5:42Speaker 7: I think it is something like that, which is, yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 7: you just replaced like the starts of like Schmeiler swift,
- 5:47Speaker 7: like you just you, You're replacing it with something else,
- 5:50Speaker 7: tomato sauce, dead horse.
- 5:51Speaker 2: You knew what I was talking about. I thought everyone
- 5:54Speaker 2: would know what I was talking about. Turns out I
- 5:56Speaker 2: off ended a very large population of our community, for
- 5:59Speaker 2: which I do apologize. I was actually referring to tomato sauce. Also,
- 6:04Speaker 2: I did think, up until this week that everybody in
- 6:07Speaker 2: every family called the catalogs that are put in your
- 6:10Speaker 2: mailbox unsolicited were called cattle dogs. Oh I haven't heard
- 6:14Speaker 2: that much never Okay, so it's just me and my
- 6:16Speaker 2: dad from Tasmania that use this type of terminology. I
- 6:20Speaker 2: will continue to use this type of language in the
- 6:22Speaker 2: newsletter to confuse you. I mean, it's probably just really
- 6:24Speaker 2: good for engagement, but it's probably just letting you in
- 6:27Speaker 2: on the side of me. That's maybe a little bit
- 6:29Speaker 2: more Bogan than you thought it was. And I'm not mad.
- 6:32Speaker 2: So let's move on, because I want to know, Jess.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I feel like that was a loss for me this week.
- 6:37Speaker 2: But how has our community been winning?
- 6:40Speaker 7: So the first one this week comes from Ebody, who
- 6:42Speaker 7: said money and life win. After months of searching, I
- 6:45Speaker 7: had a new housemate move in. Now I'm no longer
- 6:47Speaker 7: paying three hundred and seventy dollars a week rent solo
- 6:50Speaker 7: and she's absolutely lovely and he's going to help me
- 6:52Speaker 7: look after my cat while I'm away next week visiting family.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Have you more money and have a little bit more
- 6:57Speaker 7: flexibility to say yes to things like the cheeky coffee
- 7:00Speaker 7: during the week.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Oh and your cat's probably going to be happy with
- 7:02Speaker 2: someone they know, extra company. We love a cat win.
- 7:06Speaker 7: My next money win comes from Alana, who said money
- 7:08Speaker 7: win after cheers is a regular casual at my job.
- 7:11Speaker 7: My boss has given me a full time contract to
- 7:13Speaker 7: start once my maternity leave finishes. And it's so much
- 7:16Speaker 7: more than I was going to ask for, so that's
- 7:18Speaker 7: also a nice positive.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Congrab cool, very exciting.
- 7:21Speaker 7: My next money win is from Tess, who said money
- 7:23Speaker 7: and a heart win. Instead of buying expensive flower decals
- 7:27Speaker 7: for my daughter's bedroom when I was redecorating, I was
- 7:29Speaker 7: looking at spending one hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars,
- 7:32Speaker 7: I decided to get creative and paint the flowers myself
- 7:35Speaker 7: twenty six dollars in paint from Bunnings later, and the
- 7:38Speaker 7: end result has far exceeded my expectations. And my darling
- 7:41Speaker 7: baby girl now gets to go to her room every
- 7:43Speaker 7: night and touch the flowers and giggle and smile. And
- 7:45Speaker 7: I was just like them all something I've ever read.
- 7:47Speaker 2: That she DMed it to me as well. I loved
- 7:50Speaker 2: it so sweet and protein.
- 7:52Speaker 7: If you're doing something like that, don't buy a big
- 7:54Speaker 7: tub of paint, buy a sample pot.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Sample pots go a long way, and they're like eight
- 7:57Speaker 2: bucks a pot, genius. If ever I need to do
- 8:00Speaker 2: di y anything, Beck, I actually just called Jess weekend.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I don't care. Yes, I need your tips and tricks.
- 8:06Speaker 7: I live for it. And I'm very excited to see
- 8:08Speaker 7: all the stuff that you start doing in your Renno.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Oh, don't even start me. It is so overwhelming. And
- 8:13Speaker 2: when she says see, she means what you do the
- 8:17Speaker 2: things I told you to do, Victoria. Oh wait, I'm
- 8:19Speaker 2: gonna last that she means. That's exactly what she means.
- 8:22Speaker 7: Beck, Next, money means from Maddie who said money win.
- 8:24Speaker 7: There were thirty nuggets in my twenty four nugget Pat.
- 8:27Speaker 2: What that is a money win? Big win? All right?
- 8:30Speaker 2: But at what point do you stop counting how many
- 8:33Speaker 2: nuggets are in the nugget box? I've never counted my nuggets? Yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 2: did she sit down and count thirty or did she
- 8:39Speaker 2: count her bite?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Like?
- 8:40Speaker 2: How did you just? I don't know.
- 8:42Speaker 7: I mean, if you're buying that many, maybe you're sharing
- 8:44Speaker 7: them and you're splitting them up, and so you start
- 8:46Speaker 7: fifteen and ah, yeah, money split a twenty four pack.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I'm so sorry to avenge you that way. Oh my gosh, Beck,
- 8:54Speaker 2: have you never shared a twenty four pack of nuggets?
- 8:57Speaker 2: It's something so one of the true joys in life. Wow,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I hope you try it one day. I hope one
- 9:02Speaker 2: day you experienced that type of joy. I just said fifty.
- 9:06Speaker 5: I don't know if she's talking about fifty pack on
- 9:08Speaker 5: the road and that's okay. Oh you'd split a fifty,
- 9:10Speaker 5: Sure you'd slit a fifty, but not a twenty four.
- 9:12Speaker 2: But not a twenty four. Can you buy a fifty
- 9:14Speaker 2: pack of nuggets? I think that no idea. And I'm
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm sure you could purchase fifty nuggets, But like a box,
- 9:20Speaker 2: do you just go to macas and be like, Hi, yep,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I'll get the fifty nugget pack and they're like, sure,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I'm concerned. Move on, Jessica, what else have you got? Next?
- 9:29Speaker 7: Up, we have Morgan who said money loss slash money
- 9:31Speaker 7: in recently purchased a sewing machine for my husband and
- 9:34Speaker 7: I to build some more skills and handmake some projects
- 9:37Speaker 7: and clothes through our daughter. We took advantage of a
- 9:39Speaker 7: sale at Spotlight and got over four hundred dollars worth
- 9:41Speaker 7: of fabrics and patterns for only seventy.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Three How good is that? Do you know what? Another
- 9:46Speaker 2: hot tip is if you're looking for fabrics op shops
- 9:50Speaker 2: genus tablecloths, sheets, literally, old off cuts of fabrics always
- 9:56Speaker 2: end up there and they are so cheap. So if
- 9:58Speaker 2: you've got like a project, maybe want a little bit
- 10:01Speaker 2: of a different fabric, or you're just testing, off to
- 10:04Speaker 2: the upshop, you go. My friend, I want to know
- 10:06Speaker 2: how Morgan, you're planning on learning? Is there like an
- 10:09Speaker 2: online thing? Because I've always wanted to learn and it's
- 10:11Speaker 2: hard to find somewhere to go and learn as an adult.
- 10:14Speaker 2: But I'll just teach you. I've already said I'm going
- 10:16Speaker 2: to teach jess how to sew properly because she drops
- 10:19Speaker 2: off her pants to me and then I take up
- 10:21Speaker 2: the ymns and return them because heming pants is really expensive.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And we save money in any way, shape or form
- 10:28Speaker 2: that we can in this team, and that includes making
- 10:31Speaker 2: Victoria do your sewing.
- 10:32Speaker 7: She does full service service, just drop it off, same
- 10:38Speaker 7: day service.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, you got to stay. We get rid of it. Yeah,
- 10:43Speaker 2: she does it all.
- 10:44Speaker 7: My last money in this week comes from Amy, who
- 10:46Speaker 7: said I said it on a block of land and
- 10:47Speaker 7: I bought a puppy.
- 10:48Speaker 2: What a great week. Look at that face. Oh my god,
- 10:50Speaker 2: it's very cute. Do we know that papo's name? No,
- 10:54Speaker 2: it wasn't there. I did. Come on, guys, come on, guys.
- 10:57Speaker 2: If you're going to post a picture of your dog,
- 10:58Speaker 2: I'm going to need all the information. How old is it?
- 11:01Speaker 2: What is its name? What's his favorite trade? Where does it?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Like it's belly rubs? Like I need all of that information.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Otherwise you're doing this community a very big disservice. Absolutely,
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's rude. It is rude. Do you know who's not
- 11:14Speaker 2: doing our community a disservice? Antoinette? Oh yes, why well?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Antoinette is one of our listeners and she so kindly
- 11:24Speaker 5: reached out with a really really catchy jingle for Bex
- 11:29Speaker 5: broke tips.
- 11:29Speaker 2: When you say it really catchy, you mean it's the
- 11:32Speaker 2: only one we got. Oh, it's the.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Only one we got. Absolutely and also really catchy and
- 11:38Speaker 5: not at all familiar.
- 11:39Speaker 2: It's made up from scratch. I just want shmalish kind
- 11:43Speaker 2: of vibes as a shmaler smift kind vibe.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Am.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I just like play it. Please play it. Stunning, Let's
- 11:49Speaker 2: drop it into the microphone. It's time for the Bes
- 11:52Speaker 2: broke tip jingle.
- 11:53Speaker 8: B E C S b R ok tips E C
- 12:02Speaker 8: S b R okay e tips.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I love it.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Stunning, amazing, amazing.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I wouldn't say no if somebody wanted to remix that
- 12:14Speaker 2: for us, I also wouldn't say no. But we appreciate it.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I feel like that was a broke jingle. Oh yeah,
- 12:21Speaker 2: that was brand so on brand. I traded into it, though, Beck,
- 12:26Speaker 2: what have you got for us this week? Okay?
- 12:28Speaker 5: So I've got I'll share two of them and then
- 12:30Speaker 5: I'll share my own if that works for you.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Love Okay.
- 12:33Speaker 5: So the first broke Tip is from Cindy Hi, Cindy Hi, Cindy,
- 12:38Speaker 5: who says that she goes to the Asian grocer when
- 12:41Speaker 5: she's trying to stretch out her last fifteen dollars for
- 12:43Speaker 5: the week.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Smart, so she'll get.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Like a sixty five cents to a dollar fifty packet
- 12:47Speaker 5: of instant noodles.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they're cheaper there too, like very much cheaper.
- 12:53Speaker 5: You can probably get something similar from always, but never
- 12:55Speaker 5: like sixty fives.
- 12:56Speaker 2: No, that's not a thing anymore. But it is the
- 12:58Speaker 2: Asian grocery.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Absolutely, And she gets a generous bunch of Asian greens
- 13:02Speaker 5: for a dollar.
- 13:03Speaker 2: That's insane.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Dollar.
- 13:05Speaker 2: That's actually quite a wholesome meal as well. Yeah, that's
- 13:09Speaker 2: actually really good. It's really good. Gets your greens. Greens
- 13:13Speaker 2: are good because I have the dumpling rappers too.
- 13:15Speaker 7: I used to always love getting like you get just
- 13:17Speaker 7: a trey of mince flak what are they five six
- 13:19Speaker 7: barks and a thing of the rappers and a thing
- 13:21Speaker 7: of your one dollar greens.
- 13:23Speaker 2: We would make eighty dumplings one lot.
- 13:27Speaker 7: It was crazy because yeah, it's so cheap, and so
- 13:30Speaker 7: we would just freeze them, but really good way, like
- 13:32Speaker 7: if you do that, stash them away, way cheaper than
- 13:35Speaker 7: ordering them.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I love that. Oh genius that's a really I'm going
- 13:40Speaker 2: to find Jessica's dumpling recipe. I'm going to get it
- 13:43Speaker 2: in the newsletter. Oh stunning. It better be good, jess I've.
- 13:47Speaker 7: Just said because it is cheap.
- 13:52Speaker 2: What else you got?
- 13:53Speaker 5: My next broke tip is from Rachel Hi.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Rachel, So she.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Says that her family by instead of so say you're
- 14:00Speaker 5: making meatballs, instead of buying the mints and all the
- 14:02Speaker 5: ingredients and everything separately, instead, what her family do They
- 14:05Speaker 5: buy ten meat paddies from more words, and then roll
- 14:08Speaker 5: them into meatballs.
- 14:09Speaker 2: So hey, that's smart.
- 14:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like that's a pretty good way to
- 14:13Speaker 5: do it because it has all the ingredients in there
- 14:15Speaker 5: for you literally just have to take.
- 14:16Speaker 2: And also that it's pretty kind of spiced.
- 14:18Speaker 7: Yeah, and could you split them back, because like a
- 14:21Speaker 7: whole paddy to be one meatball, huge meatball?
- 14:24Speaker 8: Yeah, you.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Kind a couple of meatballs out of a paddy. That's great,
- 14:29Speaker 2: that's a good idea. Adding to that, I remember when
- 14:31Speaker 2: I was younger, Mum used to get the flavored sausages
- 14:35Speaker 2: and squeeze it out of the sausage casing to put
- 14:38Speaker 2: into like pasta bakes and stuff. So like kind of
- 14:41Speaker 2: like meatballs, but like a sausage pasta, and therefore you
- 14:44Speaker 2: didn't have to spend heaps on like seasonings and flavorings
- 14:47Speaker 2: and stuff. So I like the idea of repurposing pre
- 14:51Speaker 2: seasoned foods for other reasons.
- 14:54Speaker 7: Yes, and then you can split it so that you
- 14:56Speaker 7: get more mileage out of it, which is always a
- 14:58Speaker 7: great thing.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Well ten dollar meal right there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
- 15:01Speaker 2: love that. So my tip of the week, Oh yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 2: we've been waiting left it till last. It's not going
- 15:08Speaker 2: to be as dodgy as last week's.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, step up. I was going to tell you
- 15:13Speaker 5: about my fipbit. As you guys can see here, I've
- 15:15Speaker 5: got a fitbit that's stuck together with sticky tape instead
- 15:17Speaker 5: of buying a new band. But that's not my broke
- 15:19Speaker 5: tip for the week. It is a good idea, though.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Is it sustainable. It's sustainable. This has lasting me two weeks.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Oh impressive. It's pretty good.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And it has not even it's not slightly coming off.
- 15:29Speaker 5: It's you know, just get really really good tape.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Can you take the bit off or is it taped
- 15:34Speaker 2: onto your wrist?
- 15:34Speaker 5: You can, because when you come up here with you
- 15:40Speaker 5: unclip the band from the actual We're not green, right,
- 15:43Speaker 5: you're a genius. Okay, if I ever have to remove
- 15:45Speaker 5: that tape.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Okay, she's thought about this. Sorry for questioning the logic. No,
- 15:50Speaker 2: that's quite all right.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Anyway, this one might be common sense to a lot
- 15:55Speaker 5: of people, but is not that common That's very true.
- 15:58Speaker 5: That's what we've learned lifetime. I'm assuming everyone has anyway.
- 16:02Speaker 5: So what I do is I have you know, your
- 16:05Speaker 5: woolwas rewards cards. You're literally any card that's out there
- 16:09Speaker 5: that you can get your hands on, a one of
- 16:10Speaker 5: those freebie cafe ten boucher, what do you call it?
- 16:14Speaker 5: Coffee cards, coffee cards, anything where you could eventually one
- 16:17Speaker 5: day get something free. Seven to eleven app which is
- 16:20Speaker 5: something that I will talk about in one of our
- 16:22Speaker 5: later episodes.
- 16:23Speaker 2: I'm obsessed with seven eleven sandwiches, so I can't wait.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Can't wait seven eleven app anything. But basically the reason
- 16:29Speaker 5: why I say this is, for example, this week, I
- 16:32Speaker 5: have ten dollars to spend on my Will Wars card.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I won't be using that yet right now.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I know that I will have no money in two
- 16:38Speaker 5: weeks time, so that's when you will go into wool Wars.
- 16:40Speaker 5: You have the ten dollars that you saved up from
- 16:42Speaker 5: your everyday rewards card.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Or let's say you.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Have a free coffee on your coffee card. Don't use
- 16:47Speaker 5: it when you have money, only ever use it when
- 16:49Speaker 5: you are broke.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Save it.
- 16:51Speaker 5: You might be like, oh, what a treat. Don't do
- 16:53Speaker 5: it yet, Wait until you have no money and you
- 16:55Speaker 5: need that ten dollars on your everyday rewards card, or
- 16:58Speaker 5: you need that free coffee because you truly have nothing.
- 17:01Speaker 5: So save all of these things. And also embarrassing having.
- 17:04Speaker 2: All these Flybys cards, these rewards empowering and.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Only use them when you are broke. Please save them
- 17:13Speaker 5: for yourself and you can put a lot of them
- 17:14Speaker 5: on your phone. Woolworths and Flybys you both have them digital.
- 17:17Speaker 5: So you are embarrassed about having a million cars in
- 17:19Speaker 5: a wallet, there's.
- 17:20Speaker 2: A solution exactly right on the app. You're a genius.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Do you know? All I can think about is I
- 17:26Speaker 2: know what your salary is, and I know it's good.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I just know that you don't budget and cash flow
- 17:32Speaker 2: in a way that is super effective at this point
- 17:35Speaker 2: in time, and that's fine. You do you like we
- 17:37Speaker 2: all manage money differently. But if you put the same
- 17:41Speaker 2: energy into your budgeting cash flow system as you do
- 17:44Speaker 2: into tracking your flybys and your free Woolworths ten bucks, like,
- 17:49Speaker 2: my god, you'd be a rich woman.
- 17:50Speaker 5: I do agree that if I put this much energy,
- 17:52Speaker 5: but honestly your lives.
- 17:54Speaker 2: But I'm not going to do that.
- 17:55Speaker 8: No.
- 17:55Speaker 5: But as I say, because I have been broke for
- 17:57Speaker 5: so long, now that I've got good money, I can
- 18:00Speaker 5: start buying things that I could never and so I
- 18:02Speaker 5: end up being life breaking, even lifestyle creepy.
- 18:06Speaker 2: It's kind of like a life style or like.
- 18:08Speaker 5: You know, debts and servicing cars, all these things that
- 18:10Speaker 5: I couldn't pay for before.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Yeah. No, but eventually, it's not a judgmental comment. It's
- 18:14Speaker 2: just I'm so impressed with your ability to work the
- 18:18Speaker 2: system and make it work for you. Yeah, I'm like,
- 18:20Speaker 2: that's so much energy and effort. I cannot wait to
- 18:23Speaker 2: channel that into Beck's budget and cash flow system. At
- 18:26Speaker 2: some point in the future, you and I are going
- 18:28Speaker 2: to get to sit down and I'm going to be
- 18:29Speaker 2: so excited. Today is just not that day till then,
- 18:33Speaker 2: till then we will continue on. Let's go to a
- 18:36Speaker 2: really quick break because on the other side of the break,
- 18:38Speaker 2: I want to talk about how to actually start saving beck.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Maybe you wrote this in and then we're going to
- 18:44Speaker 2: unpack something that you slid into our DMS about which
- 18:47Speaker 2: this week we're talking about whether you should prioritize a
- 18:50Speaker 2: good culture at work over a good salary. Don't go anywhere, guys,
- 18:58Speaker 2: Welcome back everybody.
- 18:59Speaker 5: Let's listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Hi.
- 19:03Speaker 4: There, have you got a money dilemma you just can't solve?
- 19:06Speaker 4: The She's on the Money team is here to help.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big and small,
- 19:12Speaker 4: to answer your most burning money, career and life questions.
- 19:15Speaker 4: To get involved, simply head to our website and leave
- 19:17Speaker 4: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 19:20Speaker 4: yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 19:22Speaker 4: this week's money dilemma.
- 19:27Speaker 6: Hi, ladies, I am quite desperate to know how on
- 19:31Speaker 6: earth to actually save money. I feel like I'm not overspending,
- 19:38Speaker 6: but somehow every pay I seem to have all the
- 19:44Speaker 6: intentions to save, and then something happens and I end
- 19:50Speaker 6: up having to use that money, and I've just never
- 19:53Speaker 6: been able to get on top. And I'm nearly forty
- 19:56Speaker 6: and I have no savings, so I would really love
- 20:00Speaker 6: your help on where to even just begin. Thank you.
- 20:04Speaker 2: She sounds like the most wholesome human, Like I just
- 20:06Speaker 2: want to like her tone of voice, the way she
- 20:08Speaker 2: spoke made me want to be her best friend. I
- 20:11Speaker 2: was just like, I love you already, I don't even
- 20:13Speaker 2: know you, but so relatable. Yeah, I just feel like
- 20:15Speaker 2: that is so common. Jess. You're a little savings queen,
- 20:20Speaker 2: so I want to know where would you start when
- 20:23Speaker 2: it comes to savings if you were starting from scratch.
- 20:26Speaker 7: I feel like it sounds as though she does need
- 20:30Speaker 7: to do the classic Victoria Divine method of going through
- 20:32Speaker 7: her bank statements because it's the most hideous thing in
- 20:36Speaker 7: the world. It's no fun at all. I'm not even
- 20:38Speaker 7: going to try to lie to you about that.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But that's why I always recommend wine. Yeah you can
- 20:43Speaker 2: drink wine, yeah while doing it, because if you drink
- 20:45Speaker 2: tea or something, but like wine probably will help the most.
- 20:49Speaker 7: A bev Regina of some sort, bev Regena of choice.
- 20:52Speaker 7: But I think because she's saying that she keeps getting
- 20:55Speaker 7: to the end of payday and we've all been there,
- 20:56Speaker 7: where you go Oh, my god, where did my money go?
- 20:59Speaker 7: By going for three months of statements, you're going to
- 21:01Speaker 7: see where the money's going, Right, You're going to have
- 21:03Speaker 7: a very clear understanding of I'm spending more than I
- 21:05Speaker 7: should on takeout or maybe like the you know, if
- 21:09Speaker 7: you've got kids, like it's all going to the kids' activities,
- 21:11Speaker 7: and that's not an expense that I can cut, which
- 21:13Speaker 7: is totally fine as well. So I feel like understanding
- 21:16Speaker 7: where you're spending allows you to then begin making changes
- 21:20Speaker 7: to start saving.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I think that that's absolutely it. It kind
- 21:23Speaker 2: of I want to go on and on about values here,
- 21:26Speaker 2: and you guys know how passionate I am about living
- 21:29Speaker 2: to your values, not what other people say you should
- 21:31Speaker 2: be spending. But it actually just sounds like you don't
- 21:34Speaker 2: have a clear idea of what your actual budget looks like.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Because if you're thinking, oh, I put money away my savings, well,
- 21:41Speaker 2: actually you didn't allocate what you needed to to the
- 21:44Speaker 2: expenses you have. They were never savings. That was a
- 21:48Speaker 2: pipe dream. Basically, that was like very aspirational and I'm
- 21:52Speaker 2: so excited that you're prioritizing it. But every single month
- 21:55Speaker 2: that you do that, you're going to feel like you're
- 21:57Speaker 2: shooting yourself in the foot because you might be saying,
- 22:00Speaker 2: can save five hundred bucks, I'm going to put it
- 22:02Speaker 2: to the side right now, when in reality, you might
- 22:05Speaker 2: only have the capacity in your budget for one hundred
- 22:07Speaker 2: and fifty dollars worth of savings. And that's okay. We
- 22:11Speaker 2: just need to be aware of it so that when
- 22:13Speaker 2: you allocate it, you don't feel like you're stealing from
- 22:16Speaker 2: future you because that was never the money that you
- 22:19Speaker 2: were able to save. If that makes sense, we need
- 22:21Speaker 2: to sit down and go, Molly, friend, is this, and
- 22:23Speaker 2: bills are this, and groceries are this, and you know,
- 22:25Speaker 2: the kids' activities are this, Well, actually what does that
- 22:29Speaker 2: leave you with? And then that gives you the ability
- 22:31Speaker 2: to reflect on whether you want to spend that or
- 22:34Speaker 2: you don't want to spend that. You might go, oh
- 22:36Speaker 2: my gosh, the kids are doing so much, no wonder
- 22:38Speaker 2: we can't save. We're spending all our money here or there.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Or you might actually find that you're in a season
- 22:43Speaker 2: of life that's just really expensive right now. And we
- 22:46Speaker 2: all go through those seasons where life just feels a
- 22:49Speaker 2: little bit overwhelming. You're not, you know, making the traction
- 22:52Speaker 2: that you want to make when it comes to saving
- 22:54Speaker 2: or investing, and that's okay. I think sometimes it's really
- 22:57Speaker 2: about just recognizing where you're at, making a step back
- 23:00Speaker 2: and going you know what, I don't know about your situation.
- 23:03Speaker 2: You might be your single mum absolutely killing it. You
- 23:06Speaker 2: might not feel like you're saving a lot, but oh
- 23:08Speaker 2: my gosh, you're putting food on the table, you're putting
- 23:10Speaker 2: a roof over your kid's head. They're going to school,
- 23:13Speaker 2: they are happy, they are healthy, and you know what,
- 23:15Speaker 2: that's more than enough. I think sometimes we really need
- 23:18Speaker 2: to put life in perspective because that season isn't forever.
- 23:22Speaker 2: And maybe you're studying, maybe you know you're in between jobs.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Maybe you're in a job that you don't love and
- 23:28Speaker 2: you're about to move to something else, or maybe you're
- 23:30Speaker 2: considering what that next move even looks like. That's okay,
- 23:33Speaker 2: But I think this idea of seasons of life is
- 23:36Speaker 2: okay to understand but also empowers you to go, all right, well,
- 23:40Speaker 2: let's just look at what I want today and how
- 23:43Speaker 2: that might work and what that means for my financial future.
- 23:47Speaker 2: But when people say, at the end of each month,
- 23:49Speaker 2: I'm dipping back into savings. That to me is an
- 23:53Speaker 2: immediate flag that says you didn't understand what your actual
- 23:57Speaker 2: cash flow and budget looked like. And I'm going to
- 23:59Speaker 2: get hold of your email address and I'm going to
- 24:01Speaker 2: gift you my budget and cash Flow master class because
- 24:04Speaker 2: I know that it will help you, and I know
- 24:06Speaker 2: that it'll put you in the best possible position. So
- 24:08Speaker 2: my friend, watch out for that email because it's coming
- 24:11Speaker 2: your way. Because I think that's actually such a relevant question.
- 24:14Speaker 2: And I think I love that you told us your
- 24:16Speaker 2: age as well, because I think so many of us,
- 24:19Speaker 2: especially when we're young, we just go, oh my gosh,
- 24:22Speaker 2: I'll have it sorted out. I'll have it. It's only
- 24:24Speaker 2: going to get sorted out if you sort it out.
- 24:27Speaker 2: It's not magic. It doesn't happen overnight. Do you know
- 24:30Speaker 2: how many people in our community are in their forties, fifties, sixties,
- 24:34Speaker 2: even seventies that we get dms from all the time
- 24:37Speaker 2: that say, oh my god, b I have no savings.
- 24:39Speaker 2: What do I do?
- 24:40Speaker 8: Well?
- 24:41Speaker 2: We have to just go back to basics. There's no
- 24:43Speaker 2: magic outcome, there's no magic wand or kind of solution
- 24:46Speaker 2: that I can offer except for, hey, here's the process.
- 24:49Speaker 2: That you should go through that will put you in
- 24:51Speaker 2: a position where you can fully comprehend what your next
- 24:54Speaker 2: steps should be. Yeah, I love that.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Just on that, I am probably not the best person
- 24:59Speaker 5: to be give advice because I currently have no I
- 25:01Speaker 5: love their site. I did notice when I was saving
- 25:04Speaker 5: back in the day, I would feel like putting ten
- 25:07Speaker 5: bucks away felt pointless, but it was the only thing
- 25:09Speaker 5: I could actually stick to. So even if at the
- 25:12Speaker 5: end of your budgeting masterclass, you sit down, you do everything,
- 25:15Speaker 5: you realize I only have fifteen dollars a month to
- 25:17Speaker 5: put away fifteen dollars four exactly, and eventually that will
- 25:21Speaker 5: that will grow I've started. I know this isn't your
- 25:24Speaker 5: favorite thing, but I have a piggybank that I was
- 25:26Speaker 5: just going to say, one of those money teas.
- 25:28Speaker 2: You kind love it.
- 25:29Speaker 5: There's the best because you can and like I know,
- 25:31Speaker 5: it's not like gaining interest or anything like that.
- 25:33Speaker 2: It's literally just sitting there losing value whatever.
- 25:36Speaker 5: But if it works, the only thing works for me
- 25:39Speaker 5: because I can't reach it, I can't transfer it back
- 25:41Speaker 5: to myself. Only put a little bit away and put
- 25:44Speaker 5: it somewhere where you literally cannot touch it.
- 25:46Speaker 2: No, I think that's great. And I also think that
- 25:49Speaker 2: there's no such thing as it's not worth it. Yeah,
- 25:52Speaker 2: because I promise, even if it is fifteen bucks, I
- 25:55Speaker 2: promised the day before payday, when you didn't have money before,
- 25:58Speaker 2: you're going to be grateful that fifteen bucks was saved
- 26:00Speaker 2: so that you can lean on it. It's fifteen dollars
- 26:02Speaker 2: you didn't have before. So I just think that from
- 26:04Speaker 2: little things, big things grow, and that fifteen dollars will
- 26:07Speaker 2: turn into thirty, and that thirty into sixty, and that's
- 26:09Speaker 2: sixty into one twenty and very soon you'll see that
- 26:12Speaker 2: compound and you'll be like, wow, I never thought I
- 26:14Speaker 2: was capable of this. And the reason you were capable
- 26:17Speaker 2: of it is because of the consistency. That's it. That's
- 26:20Speaker 2: the magic. I really, I really wish I could be like, Okay, guys,
- 26:23Speaker 2: I'm going to let you in on this top secret
- 26:25Speaker 2: tip to saving money. It just doesn't exist, and it's
- 26:29Speaker 2: going to look very different for everybody. And that's why
- 26:32Speaker 2: you need a process that helps you understand what it
- 26:35Speaker 2: looks like. Because your process back is not going to
- 26:38Speaker 2: look the same as ess and it's not going to
- 26:40Speaker 2: look the same as mine. So why am I looking
- 26:42Speaker 2: at the way you budget?
- 26:44Speaker 6: Yess?
- 26:45Speaker 2: Sorry, really good question. That's the fact that you're thinking
- 26:47Speaker 2: about it is a really good thing. Love love, love love.
- 26:50Speaker 7: If you want to get on top of your own
- 26:51Speaker 7: budget and cash flow. Will have a link in the
- 26:52Speaker 7: show notes where you can check out Victoria's Budget and
- 26:54Speaker 7: cash Flow master class. Over two and a half thousand
- 26:56Speaker 7: people have done it, which.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Is thousands, Isn't that insane? Also will hide a little
- 27:00Speaker 2: cheeky discount code in there. I am saying that right now,
- 27:02Speaker 2: I don't know what it's going to be, so you
- 27:03Speaker 2: have to go to the show notes.
- 27:04Speaker 7: To check it out.
- 27:05Speaker 2: By all right, let's unpack it. We have a community
- 27:08Speaker 2: dilemma to go through this week, and I feel like
- 27:11Speaker 2: this one, this one is an interesting one. Are you ready? Yes, hey, guys,
- 27:16Speaker 2: any advice? I absolutely love my job. The culture and
- 27:20Speaker 2: people are amazing, and I really enjoy the work I
- 27:23Speaker 2: get to do. The issue is I get paid well
- 27:26Speaker 2: below the industry standard. I work in finance, but at
- 27:30Speaker 2: a smaller startup company. I have had many conversations around
- 27:34Speaker 2: a pay rise. However, they always say there isn't room
- 27:36Speaker 2: for this at the moment, and we'd revisit it in
- 27:39Speaker 2: a few months. Problem is, a year later, nothing has changed.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I've been offered a job that is more than double
- 27:45Speaker 2: my current salary plus bonuses. However, the culture seems very
- 27:50Speaker 2: corporate and very competitive, very long hours, and the work
- 27:53Speaker 2: doesn't seem that interesting. I can already tell I won't
- 27:57Speaker 2: love it there. How much should I value work life
- 28:00Speaker 2: balance versus good culture at work? What I have now
- 28:03Speaker 2: is awesome, but it doesn't allow me to meet my
- 28:06Speaker 2: financial goals. But to meet these goals, I worry that
- 28:09Speaker 2: I'd have to sacrifice the enjoyment aspect I have at work.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I'm only twenty three and still new to working life,
- 28:15Speaker 2: so any words of wisdom are appreciated.
- 28:20Speaker 5: That's funny too.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't want to go first on this one, Beck,
- 28:25Speaker 2: What would you do words? Pretend you work in finance?
- 28:28Speaker 5: Okay, Well, it's so easy for me because I don't
- 28:30Speaker 5: have any kids, I don't have a mortgage, I don't really.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Have any outrageous financial goals.
- 28:37Speaker 5: So I would literally just go with the culture culture
- 28:40Speaker 5: culture over anything else. If I'm happy, that's all that
- 28:44Speaker 5: matters really. But it is a real tough one.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It makes you I.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Assume you'd eventually be disenchanted with the workplace anyway, just
- 28:52Speaker 5: because they're paying you so little. But if that's not
- 28:55Speaker 5: happening and you're happy and you love the people you
- 28:57Speaker 5: work with, the culture.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Is great, I would stay.
- 29:00Speaker 5: But I don't have the pressures of yeah, children, mortgage,
- 29:05Speaker 5: all these other things that people might have to you know.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, try.
- 29:09Speaker 7: It comes down to your values, right, Like, yeah, it
- 29:12Speaker 7: depends on what responsibilities you have, what you have going on.
- 29:15Speaker 7: I would like to say, as someone who has worked
- 29:18Speaker 7: in workplaces where the.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Culture was pretty freaking average, stop talking about me. I'll
- 29:22Speaker 2: do it. I'll do it the more quietly.
- 29:24Speaker 7: No, but I've definitely done the thing where you take
- 29:26Speaker 7: the job and you don't love it, but it pays
- 29:28Speaker 7: the bills and puts food on the table, and that
- 29:29Speaker 7: is good enough. I do think, yes, absolutely, in an
- 29:33Speaker 7: ideal world, we deserve it all. We deserve great pay,
- 29:35Speaker 7: great culture, a life that we live and love to
- 29:38Speaker 7: the fullest. But can we also normalize the fact that
- 29:42Speaker 7: sometimes your job is just there to pay the bills, Like,
- 29:46Speaker 7: I don't think that there is anything wrong, and I
- 29:49Speaker 7: think there is a little bit of an ideology that
- 29:51Speaker 7: is sold that if you love what you do, you
- 29:55Speaker 7: won't work a day in your life, which simply is.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I work so hard. You can hear it in my
- 29:59Speaker 2: voice this week. Yeah I'm dead. You are dead. Yes,
- 30:02Speaker 2: you have had a massive week as well. Yeah, like
- 30:04Speaker 2: you just can't hear it as well in your voice,
- 30:05Speaker 2: like I'm so sick because I've worked myself into the ground, Jess.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I adore what I do. Everybody knows I adore what
- 30:11Speaker 2: you do as bullshit. Like absolutely, if you love what
- 30:14Speaker 2: you do, you will work harder than anyone else in
- 30:17Speaker 2: your life. I think is what that should say.
- 30:19Speaker 7: A thousand percent, And I think is your life more enjoyable?
- 30:23Speaker 2: Is there? Absolutely?
- 30:24Speaker 7: Like physiological benefits, psychological benefits to being in an environment
- 30:28Speaker 7: where you feel supported and you're I am not refuting that,
- 30:31Speaker 7: I'm not disputing it, but I think at the same time,
- 30:35Speaker 7: if you're going I'm barely making ends meet, and that
- 30:38Speaker 7: is stressing me out.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Take the job that day.
- 30:40Speaker 7: Like if someone said to me, you can double your salary,
- 30:43Speaker 7: it's at least something I think you should entertain.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Oh.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, you always have the conversation, Always have the conversation.
- 30:48Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that that means that you should
- 30:50Speaker 2: absolutely leave, Like you need to think about how would
- 30:53Speaker 2: you cope if you were in a less positive environment,
- 30:55Speaker 2: how would you deal with the change of culture. But
- 30:57Speaker 2: you also don't know a culture until you get there.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Maybe he's always greener, grass is always greener. Maybe you'll
- 31:02Speaker 2: get there and you'll find a really great group of friends.
- 31:04Speaker 2: And even though it's a super corporate environment that makes
- 31:06Speaker 2: it worth well for you, maybe you won't and you'll
- 31:08Speaker 2: be totally miserable.
- 31:10Speaker 7: Either way, I think it is worth considering and it's
- 31:12Speaker 7: worth going. It's not necessarily your job's responsibility to fulfill
- 31:18Speaker 7: your happiness of your life.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Just in the same way that it's not.
- 31:21Speaker 7: You know, no one person can make your life totally
- 31:23Speaker 7: happy and fulfill everything that you need.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I think if a job has one of them do
- 31:27Speaker 2: that for me.
- 31:28Speaker 7: I agree, Lucy's the one thing on this planet that
- 31:30Speaker 7: it fulfills all needs at all times. But I think
- 31:33Speaker 7: that if you have one or the other, if you're
- 31:35Speaker 7: happy or you're earning great money, maybe sometimes that's enough.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I think we can also cancel this idea that your
- 31:42Speaker 2: job defines you as a person, Like I don't actually
- 31:46Speaker 2: care what my friends do. I have friends who work
- 31:50Speaker 2: in podcasting. I have a few friends who are very
- 31:53Speaker 2: fancy and ethetists, like real fancy doctors. I have friends
- 31:57Speaker 2: who work in retail, and I have one friend who
- 31:59Speaker 2: is a state so mum. I have a friend who's
- 32:01Speaker 2: currently not working because she create a job because her
- 32:03Speaker 2: boss was a douche canoe basically, And I was like, yeah, queen,
- 32:06Speaker 2: get it. I don't care what you do for your work.
- 32:08Speaker 2: As long as you are kind, as long as you
- 32:09Speaker 2: are nice, you are my people. So I think we
- 32:11Speaker 2: need to just throw this idea that that defines you
- 32:14Speaker 2: out the window. But then also the tone of this
- 32:18Speaker 2: message was really that you weren't unhappy in your job,
- 32:22Speaker 2: and I think that that needs to I guess weigh
- 32:25Speaker 2: in a little bit heavier. Yeah, we're talking about the
- 32:27Speaker 2: financial aspect. But I know when I've been underpaid, I
- 32:31Speaker 2: feel undervalued. And if I'm consistently going into a workplace
- 32:35Speaker 2: that I feel doesn't respect me for the you know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: the time, the energy, the effort that I put in
- 32:42Speaker 2: the value that I'm bringing to this organization, I feel
- 32:45Speaker 2: like that wouldn't have been the tone of voice of
- 32:46Speaker 2: my message. Yeah, Like I feel like when you say
- 32:49Speaker 2: you love the culture, like that goes a little bit
- 32:53Speaker 2: further beyond just loving you know, I love working with
- 32:56Speaker 2: Beck because Beck might be the only thing that you
- 32:59Speaker 2: love in that workplace and everything else sucks. But I
- 33:02Speaker 2: think that we need to talk about culture as more holistically. Clearly,
- 33:06Speaker 2: you feel valued in some way, shape or form. Maybe
- 33:09Speaker 2: not financially at this point, and back to Beck's point,
- 33:12Speaker 2: maybe you don't need that at this point in life.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Maybe it's an experience, but I do think it goes
- 33:18Speaker 2: back to having really wholesome, holistic conversations. I get the
- 33:23Speaker 2: startup life more than anybody does. I've done it multiple times,
- 33:27Speaker 2: and I've had to have conversations with people where I'm like, look,
- 33:30Speaker 2: this is the budget for this job. Take it or
- 33:33Speaker 2: leave it. I cannot stretch the budget any further for this.
- 33:37Speaker 2: And thankfully we're now not in that position where I
- 33:40Speaker 2: have to really really cap it. Now I can actually
- 33:43Speaker 2: remunerate super super well. But often when you work for
- 33:46Speaker 2: a small business, you are taking some level of compromise,
- 33:50Speaker 2: and that compromise usually is salary to make up for
- 33:53Speaker 2: that culture, to make up for the fulfillment that you get.
- 33:57Speaker 2: So you really need to have a think about, well,
- 33:59Speaker 2: what is this to do, and beyond financial gain, what
- 34:01Speaker 2: are you getting out of this? Is this a job
- 34:03Speaker 2: where you're getting way more experience out of this job,
- 34:06Speaker 2: So if you've stuck it out for another year, you'll
- 34:08Speaker 2: actually turbo charge what you'll earn in the future, versus
- 34:11Speaker 2: going to a corporate job that might silo you into
- 34:14Speaker 2: something where you know there's not actually a lot of
- 34:16Speaker 2: gain after that. I think we need to look at
- 34:18Speaker 2: the big picture, not the right now picture, because right now, Jess,
- 34:22Speaker 2: if I said do you want to earn double your salary,
- 34:23Speaker 2: you'd be like, yeah, that sounds sick. Yeah, but you're
- 34:26Speaker 2: not really thinking that. Hey, Jess, if you earn double
- 34:28Speaker 2: your salary today, you're never going to earn another dollar
- 34:31Speaker 2: for the rest of your life. Whereas if you carry
- 34:33Speaker 2: on on this trajectory, you're going to earn ten times
- 34:35Speaker 2: more in the next ten years. Like, I think we
- 34:37Speaker 2: need to look at the bigger picture as well. It
- 34:40Speaker 2: doesn't sound like you're super unhappy, so I'm rocking a
- 34:44Speaker 2: hard place. I think you need to sit down and
- 34:46Speaker 2: maybe even just do a pros and cons list. What
- 34:49Speaker 2: are you about this list? Where do you want to
- 34:51Speaker 2: see yourself in the next twelve months, in the next
- 34:53Speaker 2: five years. It's okay not to know if you can't
- 34:56Speaker 2: answer those things, But what do you actually want to
- 34:58Speaker 2: get out of job beyond financial gain? Yeah? One hundred cent.
- 35:02Speaker 7: What did everybody else say? Because it seems like it's
- 35:04Speaker 7: a bit split across the table.
- 35:05Speaker 2: So this was interesting because you and I just were
- 35:08Speaker 2: both on the I guess side of being like, sometimes
- 35:11Speaker 2: you can just go to a job and it's absolutely
- 35:13Speaker 2: fine not to love it, and they're done that. We
- 35:15Speaker 2: asked the community, do you think it's important to enjoy work?
- 35:18Speaker 2: Ninety seven percent of you said yes, three percent said no.
- 35:22Speaker 2: We asked what do you value more in a job?
- 35:25Speaker 2: Money and salary twenty eight percent, culture and work life
- 35:29Speaker 2: balance seventy two percent. Huge people like to sit in
- 35:33Speaker 2: the grass, Yeah, I love it. If you had two
- 35:36Speaker 2: job offers, which one would you take? A lower salary
- 35:39Speaker 2: but a great culture and work life seventy six percent,
- 35:43Speaker 2: And at twenty four percent we said yes to a
- 35:46Speaker 2: higher salary but poor culture and work life balance. There
- 35:50Speaker 2: were so many comments on this as well. A lot
- 35:52Speaker 2: of people had a lot to say. Someone said, I
- 35:54Speaker 2: want the best of both, worlds. Of course we all do.
- 35:57Speaker 2: We all do. Sometimes not the most realistic thing to want.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Someone said, time to negotiate if you've got another offer.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Sometimes employers need a push. Also a relevant point. Someone
- 36:09Speaker 2: else said, for a little bit more money, I would stay,
- 36:12Speaker 2: but considering the offer is double bye.
- 36:15Speaker 7: That's kind of how I feel as well.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Someone said, as much as I love good work culture,
- 36:19Speaker 2: you need to move companies and start earning more. Someone
- 36:22Speaker 2: else said, take the job offer for one to two years.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Then you can always come back to this job later
- 36:27Speaker 2: with more experience and or pay. Someone said, there's always
- 36:30Speaker 2: another opportunity for you. Maybe this isn't the right role,
- 36:34Speaker 2: but you should be exploring a different one. That's a
- 36:36Speaker 2: really good perspective.
- 36:37Speaker 3: I like that.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Someone said, use the other offer as leverage in your
- 36:41Speaker 2: current job. Yes, you never know, but I also do
- 36:46Speaker 2: think you need to be a little bit careful. So
- 36:48Speaker 2: this is probably a spicy employer opinion. And Jess is
- 36:52Speaker 2: laughing because she knows how I feel about this. I
- 36:54Speaker 2: know this is going if I'm in a position where
- 36:57Speaker 2: let's say Jess has interviewed with someone else and she's
- 37:01Speaker 2: gotten a bigger, better job offer, and let's say they're
- 37:04Speaker 2: going to offer her double. Let's say I can afford
- 37:07Speaker 2: to pay Jess double. I am an employer that believes
- 37:11Speaker 2: that we should be having open, honest conversation about salary
- 37:14Speaker 2: before you go external. If you're going external, I do
- 37:17Speaker 2: genuinely believe that it is about more than money. So
- 37:21Speaker 2: let's say Jess when external, I'm assuming me just paying
- 37:24Speaker 2: her more is not going to mean that she stays
- 37:27Speaker 2: ten plus years. I give it six months. I could
- 37:31Speaker 2: double Jess's salary, but I guarantee she was looking somewhere
- 37:34Speaker 2: else because she was disengaged with the job. She wasn't
- 37:36Speaker 2: happy with my management, she wasn't happy with something I
- 37:39Speaker 2: was doing. Because I know with the type of management
- 37:42Speaker 2: I have, Jess would turn to me and be like, hey,
- 37:44Speaker 2: there can we talk about my pain? And I'd be like, yeah,
- 37:45Speaker 2: do you want to grab coffee and have a chat.
- 37:48Speaker 2: If you're coming to me to say, hey, v I've
- 37:50Speaker 2: got this job offer, I want to counter offer. I'll
- 37:52Speaker 2: be like, no, worries, take the job, as you've already left.
- 37:56Speaker 2: In my mind, you've already been disengaged with the job.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So that's right or wrong, As I said Spicy Opinion
- 38:02Speaker 2: from somebody who is an employer. I don't want to
- 38:05Speaker 2: negotiate with a pre existing contract, do you know what?
- 38:09Speaker 2: I am not disregarding the fact that sometimes that's actually necessary.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Like I have got friends who've worked in like real
- 38:16Speaker 2: estate and more like corporate roles where they've actually had
- 38:19Speaker 2: to go get another offer and slam it down on
- 38:21Speaker 2: their boss's table and be like, hey, mate, I've got
- 38:23Speaker 2: this offer, match it or I'm out, and then they
- 38:25Speaker 2: match it and they're so happy. And that's a ten
- 38:28Speaker 2: out of ten. You need to read the room, because
- 38:32Speaker 2: if you came to me with that, I would be like, Okay, Beck,
- 38:35Speaker 2: I'm so sorry I couldn't fulfill you. Like you know,
- 38:37Speaker 2: that looks like a really good job offer. You've obviously
- 38:40Speaker 2: thought about this. I wish you the best. I'm not
- 38:43Speaker 2: going to like I'm not in a position where I
- 38:45Speaker 2: want to negotiate with you. I don't care how much
- 38:48Speaker 2: value you put into my business, because I want you
- 38:51Speaker 2: to be connected. I want you to be talking to
- 38:53Speaker 2: me and yeah, whether that is right or wrong, we're
- 38:56Speaker 2: not disregarding the fact that sometimes that's necessary for my business.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I think you need to kind of read the room
- 39:02Speaker 2: and work out whether that's the best way to go
- 39:04Speaker 2: about it or not.
- 39:05Speaker 7: I think if you're going to put a counter offer
- 39:07Speaker 7: on the table and use it as leverage, you have
- 39:09Speaker 7: to be prepared to walk away. Like I wouldn't use
- 39:11Speaker 7: that as a technique purely increase your salary, if you're like,
- 39:14Speaker 7: I actually don't want this other job, but I'm going
- 39:16Speaker 7: to use it to increase my salary, because there's a
- 39:18Speaker 7: good chance that you will get your employer off hand.
- 39:21Speaker 7: I think if you're in a position where you're like, oh,
- 39:23Speaker 7: I could go either way.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Do I stay, do I go? I am happy here.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I like it here.
- 39:27Speaker 7: If they match the salary, I would love to stay.
- 39:29Speaker 7: If they won't match it, I'm happy to leave. Then
- 39:31Speaker 7: it's a time that you can bring it into the
- 39:32Speaker 7: conversation and say, hey, I do really like it here,
- 39:35Speaker 7: I do want to stay. But you know, if I'm
- 39:38Speaker 7: being offered double my salary, like, of course, I'll think
- 39:40Speaker 7: about that. But I don't think it's a technique that
- 39:43Speaker 7: you should use unless you are in the position where
- 39:45Speaker 7: you're like, if they're a shove, yeah, I would be
- 39:49Speaker 7: happy to walk away. Yeah, Because I think people I
- 39:51Speaker 7: think so too, and I'm always willing to have an open,
- 39:53Speaker 7: honest conversation, and I don't think a lot of employers are.
- 39:56Speaker 7: Let's be honest, and you know what, what if Jess
- 39:59Speaker 7: got a rogue off from like another podcast brand and
- 40:02Speaker 7: they were like, Jess, whatever you're doing, we'll give you double,
- 40:05Speaker 7: just like Vay did you know I got this?
- 40:07Speaker 2: I'd be like, oh my god, who was it? I
- 40:10Speaker 2: need to know it, need to know what's going on.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But I think it's tread with caution with that one,
- 40:15Speaker 2: because I know that that is an aggressive way of
- 40:18Speaker 2: going about it. Sometimes it is necessary. Someone else dmd
- 40:22Speaker 2: US and they said, in your interviews, make sure to
- 40:24Speaker 2: ask about culture, how they support balance, and whatever else
- 40:28Speaker 2: is important to you, and also do your research into
- 40:31Speaker 2: their leadership team and their business reviews. One interview is
- 40:35Speaker 2: a good way to gauge the style and culture of
- 40:37Speaker 2: the place. I promise there are always going to be
- 40:40Speaker 2: better options out there for you. I think that's probably
- 40:43Speaker 2: a good place to wrap it, to be honest, But
- 40:45Speaker 2: I think it's just about knowing your worth. But also
- 40:48Speaker 2: it sounds a little bit like you don't know what
- 40:51Speaker 2: your values are as clearly as they should be. Because
- 40:55Speaker 2: what I would want to hear in that circumstance is
- 40:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, like I don't get paid the best pay.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. I'm learning this, this and this, and
- 41:02Speaker 2: I love the team and I love the culture. Maybe
- 41:04Speaker 2: in the future I'll change my tune, but right now
- 41:06Speaker 2: I'm really happy. I want to hear that, or I
- 41:08Speaker 2: want to hear it. Look at the end of the day, like,
- 41:10Speaker 2: I'm not that happy deeply, and I do need to
- 41:13Speaker 2: move on. It might not be that role that you're
- 41:15Speaker 2: being offered double willing, but you might start exploring other opportunities.
- 41:19Speaker 7: Yeah, now you go make a personal cons list.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Maybe to make your life easier. Oh my gosh. I
- 41:23Speaker 2: feel like this has been a very very well rounded
- 41:26Speaker 2: conversation today, from Antoinette's cameo and first jingle on the
- 41:30Speaker 2: show to talking about pay and talking about how to
- 41:33Speaker 2: start saving and bis, I just think everything has been
- 41:37Speaker 2: really good today. Ten out of ten, ten out of ten,
- 41:40Speaker 2: we have tickets on ourselves. Guys, have the best weekend,
- 41:43Speaker 2: and we'll see you on Monday. Bye bye.
