- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:11on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:16course, Yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology,
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Well, hello there, everybody.
- 0:46It's Kimberly, and welcome back to the Yinning at Life podcast,
- 0:50where we slow things down, we breathe a little deeper, and we
- 0:55explore some really cool yet simple ways to feel calm,
- 0:59grounded, and vibrant, especially when we're over the
- 1:03age of 40 and navigating what I consider to be a beautiful, busy
- 1:08season of life. So today I want to talk about
- 1:12one of my favorite topics that I've been kind of diving into a
- 1:18lot lately. If you've been on the podcast
- 1:20and that's sleep, but more specifically how reflexology, I
- 1:25call it feet playing. But you'll realize it so much
- 1:28more than that soon. How reflexology can actually
- 1:32become one of your most powerful self-care rituals to unwind your
- 1:37body, quiet your mind, and invite deep, deep rest and
- 1:43sleep. If you've been tossing and
- 1:46turning lately or waking up around 2:00 or 3:00 AM with your
- 1:50mind already halfway through tomorrow's To Do List, this
- 1:54episode is for you. So let's talk about the sleep
- 2:00struggle after 40. I have talked about this on the
- 2:03podcast before, but let's be honest, we're going to dive a
- 2:07little deeper. Sleep gets trickier as we age.
- 2:13We've got things like hormonal shifts, stress, endless screen
- 2:18time, doom scrolling, the mental list that never shuts itself
- 2:24off. Guess what?
- 2:27It all adds up. Like literally it all adds up.
- 2:33And in traditional Chinese medicine Meridian theory, we say
- 2:36that you're yin energy. That's like the quiet
- 2:39restorative energy. It starts to decline naturally
- 2:43after 40. Real bummer, right?
- 2:47The Yang, that's that active Gogo energy that push and push
- 2:52and do and hustle energy. It begins to dominate.
- 2:57That's a big bummer. So when bedtime comes, the body
- 3:02is ready to rest, but the mind, it's still scrolling, planning,
- 3:07solving, overthinking, ruminating.
- 3:14But here's the thing. Reflexology works beautifully
- 3:18here because it helps rebalance the yin and the Yang through the
- 3:23nervous system and through energetic pathways.
- 3:30So why the feet? Like I don't have a foot fetish
- 3:34here like people say to me all the time.
- 3:35Like you're a foot reflexology therapist, you must have like a
- 3:40foot fetish. No, I don't.
- 3:42I truly honestly think of the feet as the gateway into the
- 3:48body, into the body, into the energy, into the mind, into the
- 3:53nervous system. And here's the thing, our feet
- 3:57are packed with over 72,000 nerve endings.
- 4:03Just like, think about that for a hot 2nd.
- 4:07And every single what we call reflex point or nerve ending
- 4:10corresponds to something in the body, an organ, a system, a
- 4:15part. Like, isn't that cool?
- 4:18Like, your whole body is literally mapped out in your
- 4:21feet, and when you apply gentle intentional pressure, it sends a
- 4:28signal up the spinal cord and into the parasympathetic nervous
- 4:32system. You all know what the
- 4:35parasympathetic nervous system is, right?
- 4:37That's your rest and digest mode, rest and repair, rest and
- 4:42nourish. So I often say to my patients
- 4:46here in my Kanada reflexology practice, like the moment I
- 4:51begin to work with your feet, your entire body starts to melt
- 4:57and your nervous system starts to decompress.
- 5:01Shoulders drop, breath slows down, the mind softens.
- 5:07It's that instant message to the body and the nervous system that
- 5:11says, you know what? You're safe now.
- 5:14You can let go. And quite frankly, most of my
- 5:17patients just fall asleep on me and they make the cutest sounds
- 5:20like it's hilarious. And then they they kind of wake
- 5:26up afterwards and they're like, oh, God, I think I was like
- 5:28snoring or I was making sounds. And I'm like, yeah.
- 5:32And they're like, Oh my God, I'm so sorry.
- 5:33And I'm like, why are you apologizing for something like
- 5:36that? That's actually a gift to me.
- 5:40Seriously, the best gift that you can give me when you're on
- 5:45my table is to fall asleep and to really soak in that
- 5:51parasympathetic state. So let's play a little game
- 5:56here. We've got some reflex points for
- 5:59better sleep that that I'm going to go through.
- 6:02So if you're listening at home right now, you can try this
- 6:05right away. But if you're driving, come on
- 6:08back to this part of the podcast, OK?
- 6:10Because you don't want to be doing this while you're driving.
- 6:13So we're going to stimulate some reflex points.
- 6:17And I'm literally going to show you how easy it is to AKA play
- 6:23with your own feet. So let's talk about the solar
- 6:28plexus reflex point. This is what I often say is like
- 6:34the that reset button. I literally have patients where
- 6:41when I start my treatments with them, I press on this point and
- 6:44they literally I can feel them starting to decompress.
- 6:52So the solar reflex point, solar plexus reflex point is located
- 6:56right in the center of the ball of the foot where the arch and
- 6:59the ball meet. So if you kind of trace a line
- 7:02down between like your second and third toe and you go right
- 7:06to where the ball and the arch meet right in that center there,
- 7:10that's it. So you want to apply gentle
- 7:14circular pressure with your thumb.
- 7:18And this is the important part while breathing slowly, because
- 7:23the combination of the pressure and the breath helps calm your
- 7:27nervous system, relax anxiety that's held in your diaphragm.
- 7:33OK. And they often say, like the
- 7:35solar plexus is like, it's the pit of your belly.
- 7:37So it's like there's a second brain that lives in there.
- 7:40So it's literally like turning it off, right?
- 7:45And we could all use a little bit of that.
- 7:48So in terms of how long do you want to press and make circular
- 7:52motion, I usually say about a minute.
- 7:55And you want to do this on both feet.
- 7:57You can do both feet at the same time or you could do 1 foot at a
- 8:01time, just depends on your preference.
- 8:05Now the next one I want to talk about is the brain reflex point,
- 8:09because let's face it, the brain is always on and let's start to
- 8:15turn it down a little bit. OK, so this point is located on
- 8:22the very top of your toes. You're starting with the big toe
- 8:28and you're going all the way to the baby toe.
- 8:30So right on the very top. OK, this is going to help again,
- 8:35to shift into the parasympathetic state.
- 8:38It's going to help quiet the mind.
- 8:41And if you're a ruminator or an overthinker or overanalyzer,
- 8:46this is going to help. This is also really good for
- 8:49headaches, migraines, or just any kind of like head tension
- 8:54that you have. And it also helps with, you
- 8:58know, balancing your whole body. So again, it's applying gentle
- 9:04circular pressure on the tip of each one of your toes.
- 9:10I say roughly, you want to spend about a minute again on each toe
- 9:16and you're going to do all 10 toes, OK.
- 9:20And I'll tell you, sometimes that alone can be enough to be
- 9:23like, oh, OK, I'm chilling now. The third one I want to talk
- 9:31about, and this is a little bit more towards our yin energy, OK?
- 9:36We want to really keep that yin energy in us.
- 9:40So this is the kidney reflex point and in Chinese medicine
- 9:46Meridian theory, the kidneys are considered are organs of
- 9:50longevity vitality. It's where our vital essence are
- 9:55Jing lives. And this is what predetermines
- 9:59how long we have on this planet in this flesh and bones blood
- 10:04body, right? So the more we're in hustle
- 10:09culture mode of do, do, do, the more we're in our Yang energy.
- 10:13That means the less we're in the yin energy, which makes this
- 10:17point so important to stimulate. So where you're going to go to
- 10:22find this point is you're going to trace a line from underneath
- 10:27your big toe all the way to where the arch and the ball
- 10:31meets right on the medial side of the foot, OK?
- 10:36And you're going to start to make circular pressurized motion
- 10:42both feet. OK, this point is deeply
- 10:46connected to fear, fatigue and that wired but tired feeling.
- 10:52You know what I mean by the wired and tired?
- 10:54Like you're so freaking exhausted.
- 10:59But then you go to sleep and you're like wired like an
- 11:01Energizer Bunny and you're like, great, now I can't sleep.
- 11:06So when you're massaging and stimulating this point before
- 11:10you go to bed, it helps to nourish the body's yin energy
- 11:14and it helps you feel safe, grounded, relaxed, calm.
- 11:22So again, I want to reiterate that as you're working through
- 11:25each one of these points for about a minute on each one,
- 11:29you're taking long, slow, deep breaths and you're literally, I
- 11:37want you to imagine like your energy is sinking from in your
- 11:41head down into your feet. You're releasing the day with
- 11:47every single exhale and every little circular motion.
- 11:54So this is about bringing that yen energy to bedtime so that
- 11:59you sleep better, so that you sleep deeper.
- 12:02For my local Kanata reflexology patients, I always say
- 12:07reflexology is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give
- 12:11yourself. Even a 60 minute treatment once
- 12:14a month helps regulate your nervous system, improve sleep
- 12:18cycles naturally without any supplements or any screens
- 12:22needed. And quite frankly, one hour once
- 12:25a month is so worth it. And it is a compounding
- 12:34treatment in the sense that what I mean that every single time
- 12:38you have a treatment, your nervous system starts to
- 12:42remember, starts to remember what it feels like to
- 12:46decompress, to relax. So the compound ripple effect is
- 12:50that every time you come to see me, you actually decompress
- 12:55faster even before you arrive on my table.
- 13:01Now, if there are some of you that are like, I don't live
- 13:05anywhere near you, but I want to learn more about reflexology and
- 13:10how I can help support my body, not just for sleep, but overall.
- 13:15I've got you. I've got you.
- 13:18So inside the Soulful Yin Yoga app, I've got self-care
- 13:23reflexology techniques for like helping to support organ health,
- 13:28mental health, emotional health, specific body parts, hormonal
- 13:33transitions, and the library is growing and growing.
- 13:39I literally guide you through gentle self reflexology and
- 13:43soothing breath work in these practices.
- 13:48But of course, I also have very calming and deeply nourishing
- 13:53yin yoga classes, all designed to slow your energy for the
- 13:57evening so that you can pop into bed and chill and sleep deeply.
- 14:09You can even listen to some of my TuneIn audios with your
- 14:14earbuds and let your body decompress.
- 14:20So here is a simple sleep ritual that I want to talk about that
- 14:25you can start to incorporate right now from home.
- 14:31Dim your lights at least one hour before bed so you start to
- 14:35produce more melatonin. Bright lights does the complete
- 14:39opposite. OK, you want to rub.
- 14:42Maybe if you've got lavender essential oil or vetiver
- 14:46essential oil, you can mix a little bit of that with a
- 14:49carrier oil like jojoba or almond and massage it into your
- 14:56feet, especially the arches and the and the toes, OK.
- 15:03And then you can go through that little sequence of those 3
- 15:06reflex points. And while you're doing that,
- 15:10you're breathing deeply in through the nose and out through
- 15:14the mouth, kind of like this. And as you're doing that, you
- 15:28can whisper in your mind, I am releasing the day my body is
- 15:33ready to rest and sleep deeply. Over time, if you keep doing
- 15:40just this simple sleep ritual, your body begins to associate
- 15:45that ritual with safety and sleep.
- 15:49And even better, on the Soulfully and Yoga app, I have a
- 15:53free sleep breath work ritual where we do a little bit of
- 15:58pressure point therapy and a little bit of breath work and
- 16:02it's free. So you can go and download the
- 16:05app and right away you get immediate access to free classes
- 16:12and all of which are going to help you to sleep better.
- 16:15Because here's the thing, sleep isn't something that you force,
- 16:21it's something that you allow. And when you care for your feet,
- 16:26it's really like you're caring for your entire body, your
- 16:29entire being. That's why I say like when I
- 16:31work on somebody's feet, it's actually, I don't think of it as
- 16:36the feet, I just think of it as the gateway into their body.
- 16:45And you know, it's really reflexology is really about
- 16:50nourishing the nervous system, hormones, our energy, making
- 16:55sure our yin is in line with our Yang and just literally coming
- 17:01back into balance. So whether you're looking to
- 17:07book your next in person reflexology treatment with me
- 17:10here in Canada, or if you're rolling out your yoga mat with
- 17:14the reflexology and sleep practices inside the Soulfully
- 17:17and Yoga app, remember that you're calm begins from the
- 17:21ground up, meaning your feet. I will link up in the show notes
- 17:32how to book an appointment with me and how to get your free
- 17:36classes on my app. Thank you so much for tuning in.
- 17:43And I wanted to say one other thing.
