• 1:07
Speaker: I'm your host, Constance Lavonice.
• 1:11
Speaker: The story of Abigail is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 25.
• 1:18
Speaker: The Bible describes Abigail as an intelligent woman who was beautiful in appearance.
• 1:27
Speaker: Abigail was married to a very wealthy businessman who had a huge amount of livestock.
• 1:36
Speaker: He was harsh and evil.
• 1:39
Speaker: Some translations of the Bible use the words crude and mean in his dealings with others.
• 1:50
Speaker: His name was Nabal, and in Hebrew it means dolt.
• 1:56
Speaker: D as in David, O-L-T.
• 2:01
  Speaker: DOLT, a foolish person.
• 2:05
Speaker: The Merriam Webster Online Dictionary defines dolt as a stupid person.
• 2:14
Speaker: During the time of shearing of the sheep, usually a time associated with feasting and celebrations, David sent ten of his young men with a message of peace and prosperity, and to make a request of Nabal to share any of his provisions he might have on hand with David and his men.
• 2:42
Speaker: At the time, David was fleeing King Saul and had a large group of men following him.
• 2:50
Speaker: They were living in the wilderness, and Nabal's shepherds were around David and David's men, were watching over them and guarding their flocks, making sure that no harm came to them and none of their flocks were lost.
• 3:07
Speaker: Instead of Nabal recognizing the significance of what David and his men had done, without David and his men, he may not have had the large quantity of sheep to shear.
• 3:23
Speaker: Nabal absolutely refused and spoke angrily and harshly to them.
• 3:33
Speaker: And when the men returned and reported to David what happened, David became angry, and he made an oath to himself to kill Nabal and any man that belonged to him by mourning.
• 3:52
Speaker: So David set off with four hundred of his men, strapped with their swords, to do exactly what he had vowed to do.
• 4:03
Speaker: This is where Abigail comes in.
• 4:08
Speaker: In the meanwhile, one of the young men who worked for Nabal told Abigail.
• 4:16
Speaker: Verse 17 in 1 Samuel chapter 25 says, The men advise Abigail to be aware and consider what you should do, because harm is plotted against our master and against all his household.
• 4:38
Speaker: And he is such a worthless man that no one can speak to him.
• 4:44
Speaker: Abigail ended up preparing a lot of food, meat, wine, bread, roasted grain, cakes of raisins and figs.
• 4:55
Speaker: She loaded it on donkeys and sent it ahead with her men.
• 5:00
Speaker: Eventually she met up with David and saved the lives of Nabal and her household.
• 5:12
  Speaker: It doesn't end there.
• 5:15
Speaker: Nabal ends up dying, and David asks Abigail to be his wife.
• 5:24
Speaker: I encourage you to read the full story in 1 Samuel chapter 25.
• 5:31
Speaker: So what did Abigail do?
• 5:35
Speaker: What's the significance for us as women?
• 5:39
Speaker: Abigail was not only intelligent, but she was wise.
• 5:46
  Speaker: She used wisdom.
• 5:50
Speaker: Abigail was able to apply her intelligence to the circumstance.
• 5:58
Speaker: The first thing she did was to consider or assess the situation as the workers requested.
• 6:08
Speaker: Abigail was willing to listen and hear the facts.
• 6:15
Speaker: Proverbs 18, 5 says, intelligent people are always ready to learn.
• 6:26
Speaker: Their ears are open for knowledge.
• 6:31
Speaker: Secondly, Abigail humbled herself before David to make intercession on behalf of her husband, Nabal, whose name was actually a prophecy of his character.
• 6:49
Speaker: Abigail was most likely very well respected as Nabal's wife.
• 6:57
Speaker: As I mentioned earlier, humility is not walking around with your shoulders bowed, pretending you don't matter, or letting people trample you.
• 7:10
Speaker: Humility is having a right perspective of yourself as it relates to God and to other people.
• 7:20
Speaker: Abigail didn't think less of herself or more of herself.
• 7:27
Speaker: She was able to see herself as God saw her.
• 7:33
Speaker: And because she humbled herself, Abigail was able to make intercession for her husband and her household.
• 7:44
Speaker: She intervened on her husband's behalf.
• 7:49
Speaker: In verse twenty four, Abigail tells David that her husband Nabal was named accordingly, but she never saw the young men David sent, implying that there would have been a better outcome if she were there.
• 8:08
Speaker: So she asked David to forgive her.
• 8:13
Speaker: Next, Abigail reminded David of his calling as a future king.
• 8:23
Speaker: She reminded him that the Lord was fighting his battles, and he didn't have to commit evil by avenging himself.
• 8:36
Speaker: Abigail was able to quell David's anger and de-escalate the situation.
• 8:45
Speaker: Anger is not a friend of rational conversations.
• 8:52
Speaker: It helps us to remember that our calling is not based on our worst day or days, but the totality of who we are in Christ.
• 9:05
Speaker: It benefits us to nurture that in ourselves and in others.
• 9:13
Speaker: Finally, Abigail reminded David of his destiny.
• 9:21
Speaker: Verse thirty reads, And when the Lord has done to my Lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you king over Israel.
• 9:39
Speaker: Abigail knew that the Lord's word does not return back to him void.
• 9:47
Speaker: When God speaks, it's the promise.
• 9:51
Speaker: Likewise, God has a promise for each of us and is found in the Word.
• 10:00
Speaker: As Christian women, we want to be familiar with God's Word so that we can speak a word in season to someone who is weary.
• 10:13
  Speaker: That's Isaiah chapter 50, verse 4.
• 10:18
Speaker: Or in this case, someone who is angry and on the edge of destruction.
• 10:25
Speaker: Abigail was able to comprehend the things that were not so obvious and make it clear at a crucial moment that could have resulted in dire consequences.
• 10:40
Speaker: As a result, David thanked God because he knew Abigail's message was of God and from God.
• 10:52
Speaker: And he blessed Abigail for her discernment.
• 10:58
Speaker: So, women, let's model Abigail's example and make a difference in our lives and others by walking humbly before God.
• 11:11
Speaker: For God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
• 11:19
