- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:44Hi, it's Adam here, and you're about to listen to a hypnosis
- 0:47session all about releasing shame.
- 0:50And I think a lot of people carry shame from their past.
- 0:53Sometimes their childhood depends on the value system and
- 0:57the upbringing. But the client that I was
- 0:59working with had a very religious upbringing and a lot
- 1:03of the time there was an attempt to use shame as a.
- 1:07Way to use? Power dynamics and and keep
- 1:10someone feeling of low self worth because then they could.
- 1:14Be easier. To manipulate or control.
- 1:17And that can happen either consciously and maliciously or
- 1:21unconsciously and unintentionally.
- 1:24But however it comes from, sometimes people can have that
- 1:28kind of critical or judgmental voice from a parent or maybe a
- 1:32teacher, and then they internalize it and they're
- 1:34almost that way to themselves because they've learned how to
- 1:38use shame or judgment as a way to punish themselves.
- 1:43But the real function of shame is not to punish, it's to change
- 1:47future behaviour. So actually what you're going to
- 1:50hear in this session is a way of manipulating that critical
- 1:54judgmental in a voice and turning it into something much
- 1:58more positive and encouraging and supportive.
- 2:02There's also a distinction here because not all shame is
- 2:05deserved. If you've got certain rules, for
- 2:09example, and those rules are very strict and in fact
- 2:13impossible to adhere to, some people could break those rules
- 2:17and feel incredible amounts of shame, even though what that
- 2:23person did isn't particularly serious.
- 2:26And I can remember, I'm an atheist now, but I grew up in a
- 2:29in a Catholic religion. And I remember not sharing some
- 2:34money with my brother and I was told to and I didn't have to.
- 2:40But I remember going to confession in the church and
- 2:42just feeling all of this shame and guilt.
- 2:44And the priest looked at me and he was confused.
- 2:47He's like, I don't understand what you've done here.
- 2:50And that gave me a reference point that sometimes you can
- 2:53have real emotions like guilt and shame, even if what's that
- 2:57is actually linked to is not anything wrong.
- 3:02And that was certainly the case with this particular client.
- 3:04They were carrying a lot of shame.
- 3:06And, you know, it took a lot of indoctrination or belief systems
- 3:12instead of at a very young age for that person to feel shame.
- 3:16Whereas someone else with a different upbringing would have
- 3:18done exactly the same things and not had any shame at all.
- 3:22So there is this metaphor of letting go of undeserved shame
- 3:26and then allowing the deserved shame to influence future
- 3:30behaviour so they get the best of both worlds.
- 3:32But in all cases, it's about releasing the shame and
- 3:35activating a kinder, more encouraging and supportive inner
- 3:40voice. And here's the interesting
- 3:42thing. Sometimes perfectionism can be a
- 3:45cause of shame because if the standards are so high, failure
- 3:49is inevitable. When people fail, they feel low
- 3:53and they feel ashamed sometimes. And while they're in that lower
- 3:56shame state, quite often they'll do things that are the complete
- 4:00opposite of living at a high standard.
- 4:03It gives them permission to do things way below their standards
- 4:07because they feel shitty about themselves anyway, if that makes
- 4:11sense. So if you are carrying a lot of
- 4:13shame or you are very critical to yourself, I think you'll
- 4:15benefit from this session. It was created for an individual
- 4:19and on that basis, some of the suggestions would have been
- 4:22highly relevant to the client that I'm working with and not
- 4:25perhaps relevant to you at all. So if you like the idea of
- 4:29working with me directly, there will be a link in the in the
- 4:32description where you can schedule a completely free
- 4:35consultation call and we can explore the idea of working
- 4:38together. For now, though, find a quiet,
- 4:41comfortable place where you won't be.
- 4:43Disturbed. Relax.
- 4:44And enjoy the session. Take a deep.
- 5:32Breath in. And as you breathe in, in,
- 5:37breathe in that slow, long, relaxing breath.
- 5:42And as you exhale, just allow any feelings of stress or
- 5:48tension, particularly around the eyelids, to feel like they're
- 5:53just melting away. And just allow with your eyes
- 6:00closed yourself to focus on the sound of my voice as you
- 6:07continue to breathe in that relaxation and to exhale any
- 6:15feelings of tension, stress or worries that's in enabling you
- 6:24to drift deeper and deeper, relaxed.
- 6:33And maybe you can scan your body for any clues of tension, maybe
- 6:38around the jaw, the neck or the shoulders.
- 6:42And as you find yourself in that comfortable position, notice
- 6:48even more so than before, your breathing, inhaling gently and
- 6:58exhaling slowly, and with every breath just a little deeper and
- 7:05longer. And as you focus on your breath,
- 7:12I wonder if you can notice the rhythm of your heartbeat or
- 7:18maybe a pulse. And maybe you can notice it
- 7:25expanding with a feeling of calm, like ripples in
- 7:30Stillwater. And just allow yourself, give
- 7:38yourself permission with each exhale to allow tension to be
- 7:46released. Just allowing your whole body to
- 7:51loosen and relax and allowing mind to quieten.
- 8:00And maybe it feels as if you're descending into a calm, safe
- 8:05place within. Deeper, calmer and more at ease
- 8:14with each passing moment. And I want you to use the power
- 8:25of your imagination to imagine the children's slide, maybe a
- 8:34water slide or maybe a recreational slide that used to
- 8:41play with as a child. And maybe it was a straight
- 8:46line, or maybe it curved and twisted.
- 8:52But I want you to imagine something strange about this
- 8:54slide. It starts up in a cloud and ends
- 9:01at the top of a mountain. And as I countdown from 12:50,
- 9:08you will imagine with each descending number what it would
- 9:11feel like to slide down that very long slide.
- 9:17And you will imagine what it would feel like when I arrive at
- 9:211:00. But when you finish the slide,
- 9:26you end up at the top of a particular mountain, a mountain
- 9:32with an incredible view of the town, of nature, maybe of other
- 9:41things that you recognize. But for now you're up there in
- 9:44that cloud. Maybe you can notice the colour
- 9:49of that slide, the material. Maybe it's made of plastic or
- 9:56aluminium. 10 starting to slide down that slide.
- 10:04And nine, as you slide down the slide, just feel your whole body
- 10:08relax. 8 continuing to descend down, deeper down, and seven,
- 10:21unleashing a sense of fun, of lightness.
- 10:27And six, just feel the exhilaration of sliding down
- 10:31that slide, almost like you're reminded of that childhood
- 10:39moment where you had all that fun sliding down a slide And a
- 10:45six turns to five, just feel your arms and legs feel limp,
- 10:49loose and heavy. And four, your internal organs
- 10:54will start to relax, your heart, lungs, even your gut, relaxing
- 11:01as your breathing slows down even more.
- 11:05And then three. So relax as you get closer to
- 11:09the mountaintop, 2. Feeling completely calm and
- 11:15relaxed and one feeling a ripple of relaxation from your toes to
- 11:20the top of your heads, all the way down to the tips of your
- 11:23fingers. And 0, you're no longer on the
- 11:28slide and you are now at the peak, the pinnacle, the summit
- 11:34of a mountain. And I want you to imagine
- 11:42feeling that sense of peace, perhaps even a feeling of awe
- 11:50there on that mountaintop, and lean into that feeling, the
- 11:56feeling of being aligned with yourself, feeling connected to
- 12:03you and to nature. And I want you to imagine.
- 12:13I want you to imagine there is now someone from your past
- 12:21talking into one of your ears, and this is a critical,
- 12:26judgmental voice reminding you of things from your past as if
- 12:33you're still guilty now. And maybe it starts as their
- 12:37voice and then turns into your voice, but their tone, saying
- 12:43all those things that you did wrong, that you messed up, that
- 12:49you're bad or unworthy. And just notice when you hear
- 12:54those words. Maybe you can find the location
- 12:58where shame takes place within you.
- 13:04Maybe your torso, your solar plexus, your heart.
- 13:08And maybe it's a heavy feeling or an unsettled, uncomfortable
- 13:13feeling. I don't want you to get a sense
- 13:19then. Not all shame is useful.
- 13:27There are places in the world where people are shamed for
- 13:30being a different gender, a different religion, a different
- 13:36age. People can be shamed by people
- 13:42projecting values and judgement onto other people.
- 13:47And we can consider that unuseful shame.
- 13:52Shame built on false foundations.
- 13:56And I want you to start thinking of just how much of your shame
- 13:59is that type of shame. Not because you did something
- 14:05bad or wrong, just because people were projecting their
- 14:11standards, sometimes hypocritical standards, onto
- 14:16you. And for all that shame, I want
- 14:22you to feel like it's a heavy rock that you've been carrying
- 14:26that doesn't belong to you. And I want you to imagine that
- 14:30heavy rock somewhere near the summit of that mountain and feel
- 14:36how good it would feel to just release that weight, to let it
- 14:41go, to roll it down safely to a place in the mountain where it's
- 14:48out of harm's way. That you don't need to carry
- 14:52that shame anymore because it was never yours to begin with.
- 14:56And when you've released that shame, just let me know by
- 15:07nodding your head. That's in.
- 15:13But I want you to get a sense that there is useful shame.
- 15:20And useful shame is the shame that comes from not living up to
- 15:25your own reasonable standards, falling short of your own
- 15:30expectations, doing something that doesn't align with your
- 15:36integrity or your values. That shame we want to learn
- 15:41from, not discarded. And I wonder, I wonder if you
- 15:48could imagine that judgmental voice, that critical voice
- 15:53morphing into the tone of someone more helpful and kind
- 15:59and compassionate. I wonder if you could imagine
- 16:09someone that deeply cares for you talking about that moment
- 16:15from your past in such a way that it inspires you to do
- 16:21something different in your future.
- 16:26Maybe to hold yourself to a higher standard, to learn from
- 16:32the past, to feel wiser than you've ever felt before and
- 16:42start to change that voice into your own voice, but keeping the
- 16:45tonality and the intention the same.
- 16:50Some people see as shame as a form of punishment for doing
- 16:57something bad or wrong. But I want you to start to
- 17:02embrace a new belief that the real benefit of shame is to
- 17:11encourage you to hold yourself to a higher standard, to change
- 17:16future behaviour. You'll be punished by your past.
- 17:22And every time you hear this kind, encouraging, supportive
- 17:26voice telling you that you are capable of change, that you can
- 17:33live up to that higher standard, that you can and will make
- 17:41progress in your life, I want you to feel that shame disappear
- 17:50and be replaced with a much more wonderful sensation.
- 17:57Maybe hope, optimism, a sense of tenacity or determination.
- 18:05And when you can start to feel then new, useful, resourceful
- 18:10emotion, perhaps in the same place or a different place that
- 18:15shame used to be, just let me know by nodding your head.
- 18:19That's it. And I want you to thank the part
- 18:24responsible for shame, not the false shame, the real shame.
- 18:31Because it wants you to be better than ever before, to
- 18:35grow, to evolve, to become the best version of you.
- 18:41And that intention is a wonderful intention.
- 18:45But I want that part to embrace that new, kind, encouraging,
- 18:50supportive voice. And rather than telling you what
- 18:54you did wrong, it will encourage you to make incremental progress
- 19:00and changes in your future. Every time it does that, you are
- 19:09releasing the shame and embracing the very resources
- 19:14that can enhance the quality of your life.
- 19:21And many people don't do this. They hold themselves up to a
- 19:27standard of perfection, such a high standard it can never be
- 19:32attained. And when they fall short, they
- 19:36feel ashamed or unworthy. But when they feel ashamed or
- 19:42unworthy, that gives them permission to do other things
- 19:47that are below their standards, which leads to more shame and
- 19:52more unworthiness, which lowers the standards even more.
- 20:00Because many people feel that if the game is not winnable, they
- 20:05don't want to play. And perfectionism.
- 20:10Is not a winnable game. It's a game of shame.
- 20:16And if you're willing to play a new game because the highest
- 20:21standard you could have is better than you've been before,
- 20:27you can't do the impossible. But you can replicate your past
- 20:34and enhance it even more. And I want you to feel that
- 20:37every time you set a new standard, every time you make
- 20:44progress, every time you do something better than ever
- 20:49before, you will feel the opposite of shame.
- 20:53And that is a sense of personal pride.
- 21:01For years, shame has tried to motivate you by beating you with
- 21:06a stick, but personal pride can motivate you with encouragement,
- 21:13inspiration and feelings of constant improvement.
- 21:20And if your unconscious is now willing to help you raise your
- 21:28standards higher than ever before, but using encouragement,
- 21:32kindness, support and pride rather than criticism, judgement
- 21:39and shame, let me know by nodding your head.
- 21:44And the more you think about that, the truer it becomes.
- 21:48And the more you hear that voice being kind to yourself and
- 21:53encouraging, the more personal pride you will feel and the more
- 21:59motivated you are to make even more progress, which gives you
- 22:03even more personal pride. I want you to get this wonderful
- 22:08sense that this game is always winnable.
- 22:17And I want you to imagine that whenever that old critical voice
- 22:21comes back, I want you to get a sense that it's like an old
- 22:28radio that is on the wrong station.
- 22:34And you can just imagine tuning it to that new voice, the kind,
- 22:39encouraging, compassionate, understanding, supportive voice.
- 22:45That's something you can just do and hear that voice now telling
- 22:50you you've got this, you're capable.
- 22:55Of course, you can make lots of tiny changes to enhance the
- 22:59quality of your life. That will be good for you, good
- 23:03for your partner. You become a better role model
- 23:06for your children. I want you to feel that that
- 23:11once judgmental, critical voice is now a coach, a mentor, a
- 23:17cheerleader, a guide on your journey.
- 23:25So let any old shame feel that it can dissolve now, because you
- 23:31can take all of the wisdom learned from that shame and feed
- 23:35it to that now encouraging voice to help you enhance the quality
- 23:44of your life and the quality of your standards.
- 23:49But only when shame is reasonable.
- 23:53It's not a prison, but a teacher, not a chain, but a
- 23:57signpost. You're not afraid of shame.
- 24:04I'm just keen to learn from it and turn that shame into a
- 24:10resolution, a resolve, a plan to make progress with that
- 24:17encouraging support from within. And there on the top of that
- 24:23mountain, I wonder if you could imagine a giant hologram there
- 24:27in the sky. And I want you to see yourself
- 24:33in the days, weeks, or perhaps months ahead.
- 24:36See yourself with that new inner voice.
- 24:40A voice that is compassionate when you stumble.
- 24:44A voice that encourages you when you hesitate.
- 24:49A voice that knows how to lead you into stimulating ways of
- 24:54enhancing your life when you're bored or have time in your
- 24:57hands. I want you to get a sense then
- 25:03time is a resource, and the willingness to make progress
- 25:07means that you can put that time to use.
- 25:12So I want you to see yourself in a future situation where once
- 25:15you might have felt shame, and notice that instead how you
- 25:21respond with a different quality, a different expression,
- 25:27perhaps a quiet determination to improve.
- 25:32But you are improving without criticism or cruelty.
- 25:38And I want you to see yourself building your life on the
- 25:43wonderful compounding principle of incremental progress, knowing
- 25:49that perfection is not the goal, but growth, consistency, and
- 25:56becoming more of who you truly are meant to be.
- 26:02And step into that future version of you with less shame
- 26:08and more desire to make progress.
- 26:15And notice how that future feels, with all that shame
- 26:19fading away and feeling more self respect, self compassion,
- 26:27kindness for yourself, but also that drive to improve, to be the
- 26:35best version of you and to keep becoming that version of you.
- 26:42And when you think of that future now, you can feel a sense
- 26:49of optimism, resilience and encouragement, knowing that
- 26:57critical voice is now an encouraging voice.
- 27:01And if the critical voice comes back, you can just re tune it to
- 27:05that encouraging voice, supporting you, believing in you
- 27:10every step of the way. And here's the thing, making
- 27:18progress doesn't require you to be perfect.
- 27:23Because even learning from a set back or a mistake is still
- 27:27progress so long as you implement that lesson.
- 27:31And I want you to imagine it's time to leave this mountain, but
- 27:39you leave all the shame behind. And instead you take that kind
- 27:44encouraging voice and that burning desire to make progress.
- 27:51I don't want you to. Imagine jumping up on that slide
- 27:53and climbing up the slide in the reverse way that you slid down
- 27:57all the way back up to the cloud.
- 27:59And when you get to the cloud, imagine taking a deep breath in
- 28:06through your nose and out through your nose.
- 28:12Just wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 28:14Start to connect and calibrate into the here and the now.
- 28:19As I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 28:23You will imagine floating from that cloud back into your
- 28:25physical body, feeling the shame is now in your past and progress
- 28:33is now in your future. Starting to count to awaken you.
- 28:41123 waking up. 456 more alert 7 eights.
- 28:46Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 28:52Wide awake. Wide awake.
