Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / The Lie We Tell Ourselves About Business Goals and Happiness
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs.
- 0:06I'm your host, the founder and CEO of my lands.
- 0:09And today we're gonna continue on the theme of what it's truly
- 0:14like to be in the founder seat on the founder journey and how
- 0:18we can build the businesses of our dreams that hit our goals,
- 0:23that allow us to live, live the lives that we really want, which
- 0:27for a lot of us include fulfillment, purpose,
- 0:30flexibility, obviously good income, adding value.
- 0:34I mean, I'm a real believer that underneath everything, each one
- 0:39of us loves helping and supporting, adding value,
- 0:43creating outcomes. And we do it in the different
- 0:47areas of expertise. We have marketing finance
- 0:49technology on down the line, but we really love being in that
- 0:54place where what we do on an on a daily basis, it moves the
- 0:59needle, right? It adds value, it helps somebody
- 1:01like businesses at their core are solving problems.
- 1:05And when you really care about those problems and you care
- 1:09about the, the people that the customers that you're solving
- 1:13the problems for everything else, frankly is you're, you're
- 1:17more joyful, right? You're, you're aligning your
- 1:20purpose and what you're here to do with your everyday
- 1:24activities. And that's when fulfilment is
- 1:26really reached in your life. So, you know, going to tell a
- 1:29bit of a story here of I've been a founder at my lands now for
- 1:34six years and I, I'm not going to tell you every single day I
- 1:38jumped out of bed. I was like, I can't wait to
- 1:40start working right. Like it's been a journey.
- 1:43It has its ups and downs. And recently I have a business
- 1:46coach. I've almost always had one and I
- 1:48was on a coaching call with him a few weeks ago and I was
- 1:51feeling totally unmotivated. And I just told him I was like,
- 1:53I'm just, I just don't feel motivated right now to work
- 1:57really hard on the business and do all the things that I know
- 1:59the business needs. And it wasn't necessarily
- 2:02burnout. It was just like this kind of
- 2:04like, I don't, I don't really want to do this stuff.
- 2:07And you know, when I avoid the things that I know the business
- 2:11needs, then everybody suffers, right?
- 2:14I suffer, customers suffer, the business suffers.
- 2:16We don't hit our goals. And I'm just kind of like, it's
- 2:18almost this like spirals, like I don't want to do the things I
- 2:21need to do. The business doesn't hit its
- 2:23goals. So I just feel worse about it.
- 2:25And it goes on down the line. And so he asked me a really
- 2:29simple question and he was basically like, what activities,
- 2:33actual building the business activities do you enjoy?
- 2:36Like what do you love? And I thought about it and I was
- 2:39like, OK, well, I love talking to customers.
- 2:42I love building software. I love sharing my story.
- 2:46I love writing content. I Love Actually looking at the
- 2:49metrics, the analytics, seeing what's working, see what's not
- 2:52working. I love product design.
- 2:54I love business strategy. I was like, wow, I love so much
- 2:58of what I get to do everyday, but I wasn't connected to that.
- 3:02And so then the question is why? And the why really is, is that I
- 3:07was focused on the outcomes, I was focused on the metrics, I
- 3:11was focused on growth and retention.
- 3:14And I was like all of the numbers because look, those are
- 3:19an important part of the business.
- 3:21You've got to know your numbers. But if I'm not connected to why
- 3:25I'm actually doing this business, I'm doing this
- 3:29business because I love my customer.
- 3:31I'm fascinated by the problem and I love building.
- 3:35And when I focus on those things, then I'm like excited.
- 3:39And I can't wait to work on the business.
- 3:41I can't wait to record this podcast and tell you the story
- 3:45and talk to a new customer and design a new product page and
- 3:48whatever. I, I, I love it when I focus
- 3:50only on the metrics. I'm like, Oh, I don't really
- 3:52want to do this anymore. Right.
- 3:54So, and what I've noticed the trap is, is that the, the
- 4:00feeling, the incorrect feeling, it's not an incorrect feeling
- 4:04because feelings are valid no matter what, right?
- 4:06But the thought that when I'm at a certain place, when the
- 4:11business is at a certain milestone of revenue, when we're
- 4:15growing at a certain pace, that's when often I feel good.
- 4:21And it's really normal, right? Like we like winning, winning is
- 4:23fun, growing, having a big business, having lots of money.
- 4:26Like it's fun and we glamorize it in society.
- 4:30It's like, you know, all the LinkedIn announcements of like
- 4:33we raise this money or we hit this revenue milestone or
- 4:35whatever it is, It's completely glorified, right?
- 4:39And there's a lot to that. Like let's celebrate each other
- 4:42and hitting those milestones is amazing.
- 4:44And being able to afford nice vacations and nice things for
- 4:46our families and all that is, is, is fantastic.
- 4:49But that's not why we started this business.
- 4:52It's not the main reason. Like yes, I'm sure we are all
- 4:55hoping for a successful financial outcome, but it's not
- 4:59about I will be happy when I will be fulfilled when it
- 5:04doesn't really exist. Like the bar for happiness from
- 5:08a financial perspective is really low.
- 5:11Like once your basic needs are met and you can have like a nice
- 5:15little thing here and there, your additional happiness
- 5:19actually doesn't increase with more money.
- 5:22You have so the, the thought that, oh, I will be happy when
- 5:26the business is growing in this way.
- 5:27I'll be happy when I have this much money in the bank account,
- 5:29business bank account, my bank account, whatever it is, more
- 5:32revenue, more users, better conversion, more clarity, all
- 5:35the kind of things. It's just not true because you
- 5:38know, what is true is that the moment that you hit that, you're
- 5:41going to be thinking what's next?
- 5:45What's next? What's next?
- 5:46What's the next bar? What's the next goal?
- 5:48How do I get there? What new thing can I learn?
- 5:51How do I add more value? It's always going to be more.
- 5:54It's never going to be enough when you really sit with, it's
- 5:59never going to be enough because I'm always looking for that next
- 6:03thing. And you really get to root into,
- 6:06OK, let's say I had all of it. Let's say I had tons of money in
- 6:11my bank account. I was growing like crazy.
- 6:12I was hitting all my goals. Then what?
- 6:16Right. I would be focused.
- 6:17Frankly, if it were me, I'd be like, all right, all I care
- 6:21about is living the most fulfilling life every day.
- 6:26And of course, relationships play a big, really a really big
- 6:28role in that. But we're going to talk about
- 6:29business, of course. So I would be living the most
- 6:33fulfilling life in my business world, which means I would be
- 6:39doing the things that I love doing, that I'm good at, that
- 6:42I'm in my zone of genius, and I'm helping the people I care
- 6:45about most solving really powerful, big problems that they
- 6:49struggle with on a given day. You know, there's this big
- 6:52cliche of you should enjoy the journey, but it's a cliche for a
- 6:56reason. Because of this point I'm making
- 7:00that if you had all the money in the world and all, you know,
- 7:04some people would be like, all right, I would just travel and
- 7:06like, do nothing. And I challenge that.
- 7:08I'd be like, all right, you're going to do that.
- 7:10You're going to do that for like a year or six months or a few
- 7:12months. And then you're going to have
- 7:14this gaping hole inside of you that you feel that something's
- 7:19missing because you weren't put here to travel the world and
- 7:25fuck off on a beach. You just weren't.
- 7:27You're here to contribute your gifts to the world.
- 7:30I know we're getting a little like spiritual woo here.
- 7:32Just stick with me. You're here for a purpose.
- 7:36And so that purpose is to bring value to the world, to help
- 7:40people, to support, to move society forward in some way,
- 7:43shape or form. And so, so again, you go back
- 7:47to, all right, I'm going to do the things that I love, that I'm
- 7:48really, really good at for people that I care about.
- 7:51And I would bet anything that when you did those things, you'd
- 7:55make a ton of money. So it's, it's this paradox.
- 7:58And I've been learning that life is full of these paradoxes.
- 8:02It's like when I'm super attached to the result, I
- 8:05basically never get it. Like when I'm desperate about
- 8:08wanting to date someone, right? That energy is repulsive, right?
- 8:13You never, it never works when you're unattached and you just
- 8:16show up as you're like lively, vibrant, confident, powerful
- 8:20self. Then you're magnetic and you
- 8:22attract everybody. So how can you apply that to the
- 8:26business? It's like if I just focus on the
- 8:27activities that I love and I'm really focused on solving
- 8:32problems for people that I care about, that's when I'm actually
- 8:36going to hit the business goals, the growth, the revenue that
- 8:40I've been seeking in the 1st place.
- 8:42It's just backwards. I get there by focusing actually
- 8:45on something else and I can share my own journey in this is
- 8:49I in my own independent consulting journey, totally fell
- 8:54in love with this way of work. I'm like, this is freaking
- 8:57incredible that I can work for myself.
- 9:00I can add value to clients. I can make a bunch more money
- 9:03that I made as AW2 employee with flexibility, with freedom, with
- 9:07dictating my own rates, with dictating proposals and scopes,
- 9:10getting rid of clients I'm not aligned with, choosing new
- 9:13clients that I am aligned with having tons of free time.
- 9:16I was like, this is unreal. This is freaking crazy.
- 9:21So I was like, all right, I did this for a few years.
- 9:22It was amazing. And to me, it just felt like
- 9:25there's a bigger purpose for me. There's something bigger.
- 9:28And so I was like, all right, I did not leave my job to help 2
- 9:33to 3/4 clients at a time. I left my job to build something
- 9:37big, something that really helps thousands, millions of people,
- 9:41that changes people's lives. And so that's when I started my
- 9:45Lands. And so My Lands was all about
- 9:47and continues to be about making business.
- 9:50I focused on fractionals for the last six years, independent
- 9:54consultants, fractional solopreneurs, making this life,
- 9:57this way of working sustainable overtime.
- 10:00Because when other people can live the life that I lived,
- 10:05right, and I continued, I can do it too.
- 10:07Like can we all do it? Can we all have this massive win
- 10:09win where I can build this business?
- 10:11It adds value to you. It gives me flexibility and
- 10:13freedom, and it enables you to have flexibility and freedom
- 10:17sustainably. It's all about sustainability.
- 10:19If it's not sustainable, it doesn't freaking matter.
- 10:21You can do it for a few months, for year, for a year or two, but
- 10:24it doesn't matter if it's not sustainable.
- 10:28So I love building this business when I see people win and I'm
- 10:33building tool that enables them to win over the long term.
- 10:36So that's why we built Stratus. Stratus is all about using
- 10:41LinkedIn content to sustainably attract clients so that you can
- 10:46do the thing that you love, which is delivering for those
- 10:49clients and then have all this free time, whether it's spending
- 10:52time with your family, going on vacation, doing whatever you
- 10:54want to do. So if you're anything like me,
- 10:58when you focus on what you love to do, then you enjoy it.
- 11:02And it's not this like, I got to wake up and I got to do all
- 11:05these things. It's like, no, I get to, this is
- 11:07exciting. I get to build this product,
- 11:10talk to customers, analyze the data, create systems, write new
- 11:13blogs, like I get to do all these things.
- 11:15This is what my day is filled up with.
- 11:17Like, wow, how freaking lucky am I?
- 11:20And when that is the energy that you're coming to your business
- 11:23with, everything changes. Your quality of work is better,
- 11:27you're happier, you have more energy, you have more time to
- 11:30work on it, you want to work on it.
- 11:32You're not fascinating, you're not distracting.
- 11:35And your business outcomes are a beautiful result of that.
- 11:40So it ends up being like, why do we even set goals?
- 11:44And I think it is really important to set the goal
- 11:47because otherwise, like, how do you even know what you're
- 11:49working towards? But I would say like spend 1% of
- 11:52the time setting the goal and 99% of the time deciding what
- 11:57activities am I freaking amazing at that I love that's going to
- 12:01solve this problem I care about. Like that's really what this is
- 12:04all about. So now we get into the
- 12:06discussion of how can you align your business with your purpose?
- 12:11For me, this comes back to separating my identity from the
- 12:15outcome of the business. I am not the business.
- 12:18If I shut the business down and it's quote UN quote a failure, I
- 12:22am not a failure, right? I am successful.
- 12:24I have tons of value to add. I am a value add to society
- 12:29overall, right? So no matter what happens, I'm
- 12:32successful. And now I can really think about
- 12:35like, what do I truly love doing?
- 12:37Like what sets me apart more than anybody else?
- 12:40And can I focus on aligning business activities with what I
- 12:45love doing and customers I love to serve with where my genius
- 12:49really lies? Because the the, the more time
- 12:52in the day I'm living in my genius, I'm living in my
- 12:56superpowers, the more fulfilled I am and the better outcomes I'm
- 13:01going to have. So we're not going to focus on
- 13:03outcomes, but it's going to end up happening.
- 13:06It's like what? It's the same thing as the
- 13:07dating analogy, right? I'm going to put my best energy
- 13:10out there, my magnetic self, and I'm just going to attract the
- 13:14world. And look, I don't expect anybody
- 13:17to love every part of building a business.
- 13:19Like some of the stuff, whether it's like bookkeeping or some
- 13:21people love book bookkeeping, right?
- 13:23But you're not going to love every part of it.
- 13:25And that's OK, right? So what I would encourage you to
- 13:28do is increase the percentage of, of things that you can do
- 13:32that you do love. Like do go dive deeper and
- 13:35deeper and deeper and deeper into all the things that you
- 13:37love. And then either outsource what
- 13:40you don't love, if you can, or just time block.
- 13:43It'd be like, all right, two hours a week.
- 13:45I'm going to do this shit I don't like to do.
- 13:46I'm going to do it like Wednesday at 4 and Thursday at
- 13:49four period, end of story. And I'm just going to like sit
- 13:51down, do it. And I'm going to reward myself
- 13:53with a glass of wine after whatever it is.
- 13:56So like you get to find ways where, yes, the business needs
- 13:59other things from you. But you know, for me, I like to
- 14:02outsource it, right? I like to give it to my VA or
- 14:05chief of staff or just like, or frankly, like hire people that
- 14:08the stuff that you don't like to do is actually their zone of
- 14:11genius and they freaking love it.
- 14:13It's a win win, right? So you're, you think you're
- 14:16handing off like an annoying task and they're like, yeah,
- 14:17please give it to me. It's like, OK, great.
- 14:19You know, I don't understand, but that's OK.
- 14:21Like if you love it, amazing. And I'm sure I love like I love
- 14:24building business models. I could build business models
- 14:27all day. And some people for that, you
- 14:29know, there's like pulling their hair out, like pulling teeth.
- 14:31They can't possibly understand how I love it, but I do.
- 14:35So we're going to wrap this up. I like to keep these about 15
- 14:38minutes. So I'll wrap this up here.
- 14:41I really hope that there's something in here that spoke to
- 14:44you that like nailed it for you of if you've had those moments
- 14:48of lacking motivation or like freak, like, how do I, how do I
- 14:52fucking do this in a way that is sustainable, where I have
- 14:56fulfillment even if I haven't hit my goals yet.
- 14:59I hope something here landed with you, resonate with you.
- 15:02Would love to hear from you. Shoot me a note on LinkedIn,
- 15:05shoot me an e-mail. Come check us out at my Lance.

- 15:14customers. I mean, that is the sole
- 15:16purpose, the entire reason we built the whole product.
- 15:18So I hope you give us give us a chance.
- 15:21Check it out and shoot me a note.
