Transcript
- 0:22Hello, everyone.
- 0:23Welcome back to this week's episode of Till minutes, this is Bailey and we don't have Brianna today.
- 0:29So it's going to be a quick, short and sweet episode as she is downward count with the flu.
- 0:35Her kiddos were sick last week.
- 0:37And fortunately she was not able to escape the sickness.
- 0:41So we didn't want to leave you guys hand without an episode this week.
- 0:46So I'm going to focus.
- 0:47We've talked about protein before we've talked about nutrition labels.
- 0:51I'm going to focus today on specifically protein powder.
- 0:56What to look for.
- 0:57And how to kind of choose the best one.
- 1:00Now, when it comes to protein powder in general.
- 1:04It's not it's okay.
- 1:06If it's not always like the perfect one what's most important, I think is how much are you using it for me?
- 1:12For example.
- 1:13I use protein powder nearly every morning.
- 1:16So I want to make sure I have a high quality.
- 1:19Protein powder.
- 1:20Cause I'm using every day.
- 1:21If you're using it like.
- 1:24Twice a month, maybe not as important.
- 1:26So, I mean, we still want to get the best quality we can, but understand like sometimes that's not a priority, so.
- 1:34Use these steps to kind of figure out what best suits you, your lifestyle.
- 1:39Your budget, your tastes buds.
- 1:42And I hope these tips are helpful.
- 1:45Mt with protein.
- 1:47Is it required, especially like with a weight loss journey no.
- 1:51Now required, but it's definitely helpful because it's going to give you a quick boost to your protein intake.
- 1:57This is the easiest way I can get my protein in the morning.
- 2:01It's quick.
- 2:02It makes my smoothies tastes good.
- 2:04So I love it.
- 2:05Now it's going to help support your protein needs, especially if you're having a hard, hard time incorporating protein, or if you're limited on time.
- 2:14And in general, I see women especially are not getting enough protein.
- 2:18Especially at this breakfast me like two eggs for breakfast, not enough protein.
- 2:23So this is going to be an easy way to increase it.
- 2:25And this is why.
- 2:27It can also be super important to choose a quality protein powder, not just get one.
- 2:32Just because it's the cheapest.
- 2:34And to be honest, I do order mine.
- 2:36I do not find mine in this store because.
- 2:40It is one that I love.
- 2:42It tastes good gradients.
- 2:43I liked they do heavy metal, heavy metal testing.
- 2:47So let's get into what I look for on protein powders in general.
- 2:51Now we're choosing a protein powder, some general things to look at.
- 2:56Out of sugars, that'll be on your nutrition label and it'd be spaced out under your carbohydrates.
- 3:01You have added sugars listed.
- 3:05Ideally.
- 3:06Like less than three to five grants about sugar.
- 3:10Protein powder.
- 3:12I mean, it should be mainly protein because it's a protein powder.
- 3:16Now, if we were to only have protein in this protein powder as not going to taste very good.
- 3:23So that's why other ingredients are added.
- 3:25Now we got to look at these other ingredients.
- 3:27What are they?
- 3:29How are they impacting our body?
- 3:32So taking a peak at those added sugars.
- 3:34And we recently just did episodes on added sugars.
- 3:37As well.
- 3:37So also thinking about.
- 3:39Those artificial sweeteners that can sneak in there too.
- 3:44Because that's a good way where they can be like, oh, it's low carb.
- 3:49No added sugars.
- 3:51But we still want to avoid these artificial sweeteners as much as we can, because they're not great for gut health and sucralose is one.
- 4:00That I kind of look at really quickly on your ingredients because it is so often you so fit as sucralose personally, for me.
- 4:07It's a no-go.
- 4:08Other things to kind of think about is, well, I guess while we're on the ingredients, Thinking about.
- 4:15Where this protein is coming from.
- 4:18So there are different types of protein powders.
- 4:21You have your whey protein, which whey protein is going to be kind of your best option.
- 4:26If you can tolerate it.
- 4:27That's the key part.
- 4:28If you can tolerate it.
- 4:29A lot of people.
- 4:30Don't tolerate whey protein.
- 4:32Well, And protein can be a little bit tricky because I see people trying out different protein powder and like, it just made my stomach heard.
- 4:40It's the protein.
- 4:42But thinking about these quality protein powders, if we're getting a random one and has also all these artificial sweeteners added to it, it has some different.
- 4:53Like oils added to it.
- 4:54Some other miscellaneous ingredients.
- 4:56Maybe it wasn't necessarily the way it was artificial sweeteners.
- 5:01That's disrupting your gut health.
- 5:03So Wayne is going to be the best option.
- 5:05If you can tolerate it.
- 5:07The next best option, I would say in egg based protein, because those are both going to give you your complete.
- 5:13Protein sources here and have all the essential amino acids and this ones.
- 5:18Other options for protein powders.
- 5:20If he can't do whey protein, a protein isn't going great.
- 5:24And I really like a protein because like I said, complete protein source, but it's also tolerated very well.
- 5:30By many people.
- 5:32So that is a bonus there when it comes to that egg protein.
- 5:36I personally have a dairy allergy.
- 5:38So this is what I use.
- 5:40But I have lots of people's.
- 5:41I don't have a dairy allergy.
- 5:43That just prefer to say protein for the taste.
- 5:46For the quality of the one and I'll get into specific recommendations.
- 5:51But for the quality of the one I recommend and they just tolerated a lot better.
- 5:58Other types of protein.
- 5:59I mean, you have plant protein, something to kind of be aware of here.
- 6:03I would not recommend using plant Bertine daily if pregnant or breastfeeding, due to the number of heavy metals that can be present in pea and rice based proteins.
- 6:13So plain protein, especially for using this, like, if you are vegan, you want to do more of like a sport-based wine because they will typically add.
- 6:22Amino acids.
- 6:23So you get a full amino acid profile.
- 6:26Collagen peptides are another big one and they're kind of a hot commodity right now.
- 6:32So collagen is a little bit different than protein powder.
- 6:38But it's still a great way to add protein to your day.
- 6:41Collagen is going to be derived from the height of bovine or Marine animals.
- 6:47Whereas protein powder is the powder form of protein from plants, a eggs or milk.
- 6:55College and was also going to be an incomplete protein.
- 6:57So it doesn't have all the essential amino acids.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:00Compared to like a milk or your way or your egg based protein powders would.
- 7:05But it's still a protein source.
- 7:08I just because it might not be contributing to that.
- 7:10Like, Creation of new muscle muscle protein synthesis.
- 7:14Like we get those benefits from.
- 7:17Complete protein sources because of the Lucene in it.
- 7:20It's still going to have benefits.
- 7:22So when I hear people saying like, oh, if you eat this amount of protein, It's going to be overdoing it.
- 7:28It's not like doing anything for you.
- 7:30Not true.
- 7:31I mean, protein is.
- 7:33Other benefits.
- 7:35To wheat.
- 7:36Than just.
- 7:40Like building muscle protein is also going to be.
- 7:44Helpful for your immunity and your enzymes and your hormones.
- 7:49That collagen is great for.
- 7:52You're Cartlidge you're doing your ligaments, your skin, your hair.
- 7:55So there's other benefits than just muscle building for protein.
- 7:59So collagen is also great to include, and I actually include it.
- 8:02Daley along with my protein powder.
- 8:05Other things too.
- 8:07I look out for your labels and kind of the ingredients in it.
- 8:14So we talked about what our officials, sweeteners, other things, just like, what does it sweeten within and general?
- 8:18So avoiding, like dextran glucose, glucose, maltodextrin, these are forms of sugar.
- 8:24And again, we want protein to be protein.
- 8:26We don't want a bunch of these like random sugars in it.
- 8:29Speaking of the protein, that protein source I had mentioned, we have our whey protein or a pea protein.
- 8:35Plant protein.
- 8:36So soy protein.
- 8:39A lot of plant-based or vegan proteins are going to contain soy specifically like a soy protein isolate.
- 8:46So we itself is not bad as long as it's high quality.
- 8:50It's that high it's highly processed so that we don't want so avoiding like a soy protein isolate as a protein source and either protein powders or protein bars.
- 9:02Vegetable oils are also something I look at in the ingredients.
- 9:05These are put into protein powders to create like a richness.
- 9:08Taste, but they can be high in omega six fatty acids.
- 9:13And an abundance of omega sixes compared to may get threes.
- 9:17Can.
- 9:18Lead to inflammation.
- 9:19We got enough stress leading to inflammation in our life.
- 9:22Let's not add more.
- 9:24Field of the fire.
- 9:25So look out for ingredients like soybean oil, corn oil, safflower, sunflower, those types of things.
- 9:32So, those are kind of your main ingredients.
- 9:34That I look at.
- 9:35Other things on the nutrition label.
- 9:39Looking at that protein content.
- 9:40Ideally you want a minimum of 20 grams.
- 9:43Now if you have a protein powder, that's a little like 20 grand.
- 9:47So you're aiming for 30.
- 9:48You could just do a bigger scoop.
- 9:49Totally fine, but keep in mind, like if it's 12 grams of protein and it has five grams of added sugar.
- 9:56Well, if you're doubling that protein now you're also getting 10 grams of added sugar.
- 10:00So looking at.
- 10:01This.
- 10:02Protein content.
- 10:05Per scoop or serving that it has.
- 10:09The other thing like to check would be the carb content.
- 10:12Because again, this is a protein powder.
- 10:15We don't need a bunch of carbs added.
- 10:17Few grams is going to be expected because like I said, we want it to taste good.
- 10:20And they're going to give a flavor.
- 10:22So shouldn't be overdoing it in carbohydrates or fat here again, that protein should kind of be your highest macro nutrient.
- 10:31When looking at the label.
- 10:34One other thing to consider is do they do heavy metal testing?
- 10:39Choose a company that does heavy metal testing on their products.
- 10:43And usually you can find this online when you look up their products where it might say it on the label or something, this is going to be especially a Porin.
- 10:50Like I mentioned, those plant-based protein as these are more likely to have heavy metals in them.
- 10:55So search the website and you can email them.
- 10:59And you'll be able to find out if they do heavy metal testing.
- 11:05Those are kind of the main things.
- 11:07I look at my protein better.
- 11:08So that was a lot of information.
- 11:10But.
- 11:11To sum it up a little bit.
- 11:13At least less than five grams of added sugar, greater than 20 grams of protein.
- 11:18Avoiding those like soybeans, safflower, corn, oral coin, corn oils.
- 11:25Doing less carbs, more protein should be in your protein powder.
- 11:30Doing complete protein sources from either like a way or an egg based protein and avoiding those artificial sweeteners.
- 11:36Sucralose is a big one.
- 11:39So.
- 11:41My favorite protein powder and I recommend it all the time is drink wholesome.
- 11:45They have great ingredients, minimal ingredients.
- 11:49So my favorite wine, for example, Is the mocha flavor.
- 11:53The mocha flavor only has eight whites, coconut cocoa.
- 11:57Coffee.
- 11:58Monk fruit.
- 12:00So simple ingredients, you can compare that to a lot of protein powders that have a paragraph long of ingredients.
- 12:07And I mean, this has 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ingredients.
- 12:13That's it.
- 12:14It's easy to use.
- 12:15Yeah.
- 12:15That protein boost.
- 12:16And like I mentioned that a white or the egg based protein is easier to digest.
- 12:22So a lot of people do.
- 12:23Like this.
- 12:24Powder for that reason.
- 12:26They are third-party tested.
- 12:29And.
- 12:32It's also like it's additive free.
- 12:34So with that short ingredients, they're not adding a bunch of emulsifiers stickers flavors, or like using those artificial sweeteners.
- 12:43They use that monk fruit, which I would recommend over a super lows.
- 12:48And then.
- 12:50They do have an option if you don't like Monkfruit they do Maples.
- 12:54Maple sugar.
- 12:55So that is also another option that would increase the carbohydrate amount.
- 12:59Honestly, either one is fine with me, kind of a personal preference.
- 13:03I do prefer the monk fruit wine.
- 13:05Just because I.
- 13:08Add sweetness.
- 13:09To my smoothie through fruit.
- 13:12So the maple shore.
- 13:15Maple sugar blend was just a little too much sweetness for me.
- 13:19I just personally preferred.
- 13:22The monk fruit sweetener.
- 13:22So try either one out, but drink wholesome.
- 13:26Is my favorite egg based protein.
- 13:29My second recommendation for anyone would be just ingredients.
- 13:34Just ingredients is also a great protein powder company.
- 13:38They have lots of different items on their website, but protein is one of their things that is a great option.
- 13:45They are similar to drink wholesome that they have simple ingredients.
- 13:48And it's actually interesting to look at their labels because.
- 13:52Like a strawberry versus a chocolate protein powder is going to have a little bit different ingredients.
- 13:57It's not like it's flavored with natural flavors.
- 13:59It's going to be flavored with actual, like strawberries.
- 14:02So they're using more whole food ingredients.
- 14:05It's just agreeance would be more of a whey based protein.
- 14:08They do have vegan options as well.
- 14:11So just ingredients or drink, Holsten other ones.
- 14:14I like designer egg protein.
- 14:16Naked nutrition garden of life.
- 14:19Perfect supplements.
- 14:21Shaklee.
- 14:22Naked nutrition.
- 14:24Be well by Kelly has a great one.
- 14:27Within them as well.
- 14:29And I'm sure there's probably others out there, but I don't want to overwhelm you with too many recommendations.
- 14:34So top two.
- 14:35Would I recommend drink wholesome or just ingredients?
- 14:39Other things.
- 14:40So protein powders actually, I mean, sorry.
- 14:43Protein bars.
- 14:45Or another great thing to have on hand.
- 14:47So I was just gonna throw out some protein bars or like protein snacks that can be.
- 14:52Great options to have.
- 14:54I really like Aloha.
- 14:56They're my favorite personally Paleovalley has great ones.
- 14:59Chomps.
- 15:00It's not like protein bar.
- 15:01It's more just like Turkey or beef sticks, but those are great to have on hand.
- 15:05IQ bars.
- 15:07Kirklin protein bars.
- 15:08They actually have their own brand.
- 15:12The RX bars are great to have on hand.
- 15:16There is one Nash bars, but they are very hard to actually get because they are constantly sold out.
- 15:22So those are my protein bar recommendations as well for you to check out.
- 15:27If you have any other questions.
- 15:29About protein powders, protein bars, feel free to send.
- 15:34Brianna or I a message on Instagram and hopefully we will both be back next week and we will get into the topic we were supposed to discuss.
- 15:43So I'm talking about like weight gain over the weekend, or even like over a day, why it's happening.
- 15:49And what you can do about it.
- 15:52So tune in next week and we'll talk soon.
- 15:54Bye.
