- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to say thank you to you, of course, for taking some time out of your busy day to tune into this episode.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: And today I want to talk about emotional detox.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: This really became top of mind for me over the last couple of weeks as I was starting to hear more and more clients say to me, I'm just kind of sick of myself, or I'm just kind of sick of feeling this way.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And so I thought that it would be an opportune time to bring this concept of emotional detox to the forefront.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Emotional detox is truly like a cleanse.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: I recently put out a social media post on emotional detox and related it to the cleanses that we see every day, you know, those juice cleanses.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: But really what it is is it's a detox, it's a cleanse rather for not just your mind and heart, also your body.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Because as we know, the body holds on to a lot of memory and has a lot of intelligence as well.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And so it's recognizing and releasing some emotions that are not healthy for you that can build up over time.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So when we think about our bodies as a whole, we accumulate toxins and we hear it oftentimes in the medical world about the toxins that certain organs are holding on to.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: But just like that, our emotions can be held in our body and they can affect our mind and our spirit.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And so it's important to allow for that detoxification to happen or that cleanse to happen.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Because when we do that, if we were to relate it to a metaphor, it's it's the same concept as why we talk about decluttering, because when we remove the clutter, we f we are able to see more clearly, we're able to think more clearly.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And so if we have a mind that's filled with unresolved emotions, or we have a spirit that's filled with unresolved emotions that are holding us back, we eventually might start feeling the physical ailments, but also we don't we don't really have that clarity.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: We don't have that creative side of our mind that can look at things differently or look at things with possibility.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: So, how do you know that you might need an emotional detox?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Well, it's important to pay attention to signs like stress levels, you know, really taking the time to pay attention to how stressed out you are, you know, really give yourself permission to rate it and recognize is this is this becoming chronic?
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Paying attention to irritability.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Um, do you get irritable pretty quickly?
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Does something trigger you pretty fast?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Also, if there's the inability um to let go and you're finding yourself over-ruminating or just ruminating in general, and also another indication can just be the in the inability to fall asleep or the inability to stay asleep.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Those are just some some indicators that there might be some emotional baggage that's being carried around and might need some some attention and some awareness brought to it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: So, what is what do I mean by emotional detox and how do we go about doing it?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Well, the first thing is self-reflection because if we aren't aware of what's happening to us or or within ourselves, it's really difficult to feel empowered to make a decision or a choice because ultimately it would it's our subconscious running the show at that point.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So taking some time to self-reflect, taking time to actually acknowledge what you're experiencing.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: So, you know, taking time to recognize what sensations you're feeling, what are the thoughts that you're having, what urges to do or not to do, but beyond that, what feelings you're having, and then being able to name the emotion.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So remembering that those four thor those four pillars, sensation, thoughts, urges to do or not do, feelings, those all create a a more um overall emotion.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And remember, emotions are how we experience life.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: So taking the time to acknowledge those emotions are is really, really important, and then finding ways to express them.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: So most often we talk about things like journaling, you know, getting pen to paper.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Some people like to type out their their what's going on for them in their mind, but sometimes it's even better to do pen to paper.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I know that from personal experience, when I have that physical output channel happening where I'm writing something out, there is a deeper sense of release that occurs than when sometimes when I'm just typing it out.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: But it's not to say that you can't type it out.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Also, mindfulness.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: I've talked about this time and time again on this podcast, and it's about coming back to the present moment because oftentimes we get stuck in the past or we get stuck worrying about the future, and so being in the present moment is really important if we're going to go through an emotional detox.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, support.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Having a support system in place is so important because when we are able to have that person who can witness us and can hold space for us, that's really, really important as well.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Um, because oftentimes we get stuck in our own thoughts or we get stuck in our own feelings.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And so I often will say, people ask me, Well, what do you do as a coach?
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And what I say, the deepest part of my work is being a witness for my clients and being able to hold a container for them where they can actually start to become their own witness.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: And the truth is when we witness, we do create space for that deeper understanding of self.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And when we're working and talking about things like emotional detox, having that compassionate understanding of self is so vital to being able to move forward and through it.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: So, why am I even talking about this though?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Because there are benefits to this.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of times, and I was actually just guessing on a podcast, and this came up in conversation around sometimes we don't want to take a look because we're actually afraid of, well, if I stir that up, then I'm not gonna be able to get through it, or if I stir it up, I'm gonna get stuck in it.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: And it's recognizing that you're already stuck in it when you try to avoid it because it's still kind of running underneath the surface.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: So it's important to give yourself permission to recognize that the own sometimes we have to give ourselves that push to go through the thing in order to actually clear it out of the way.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And when we do allow for that space, there is room for deeper creativity, there's room for clarity around situations because you're able to look at things with a different lens than being stuck in that emotional space that you that wasn't maybe not healthy for you in the first place.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And it's important to recognize that this isn't going to be a one and done.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: You know, oftentimes, like one of the ways that I help people experience emotional detox is actually through breath work.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It's a somatic way of working through emotions that are stuck, because the way that I I run my breathwork classes, it's a circular breath through the belly, the chest, and out the mouth.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: And and you do this for a period of about 25 to 30 minutes.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And through that process, a lot of clients have have found themselves having deep releases and they almost can't even name everything that they're releasing because a lot of times what ends up happening is you um you don't know that you're you're experiencing these things until you allow them to come up and out.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: So it's important to give yourself permission to persist through it as well.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and recognize it's not going to be a one-and-done thing.
