Latest / The Shift Podcast / 39. Shedding “New Nurse” Stigma
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to fight my datak, a podcast that helps bridge, the
- 0:03gap between healthcare workers and First Responders and
- 0:06everything in between. I can't believe for three months
- 0:12into the year of 2023 and it has just been so cold and dreary and
- 0:16California. I cannot wait for the sun to
- 0:18Peak its way through the clouds again.
- 0:20And I just think we're just spoiled to always be
- 0:23experiencing sunny weather in California.
- 0:25So looking forward to those changes in the weather and I
- 0:28also just cannot wait to share this interview with one of my
- 0:31clients Yasmin. She came to me as a new nurse
- 0:33and she had this new nurse stigma.
- 0:35I love talking about this with my clients because I always see
- 0:39them saying new nurse. Nurse being able to shed that
- 0:42title when they equate it to having enough time or enough
- 0:46experience. But she is just a great example
- 0:48of how she has used coaching to gain confidence and Propel
- 0:52forward to now already mentoring precepting and filling in as
- 0:57rapid response at her hospital and just that short amount of
- 1:00time that she has been a nurse. And so I love for you to hear
- 1:03how her journey has been, shedding that new nurse title
- 1:06and also how she is looking into entrepreneurship and Becoming a
- 1:12real estate broker along with being a nurse and I think as
- 1:17nurses, we oftentimes, think about doing other jobs because
- 1:20our shifts allow us to do that. And she talks about this scary
- 1:23road that it's taken for her to kind of discover how she can be
- 1:26successful in both. So without further Ado, here is
- 1:29my interview with Yasmin. Hey guys.
- 1:37Mean I wanted to have you on the podcast today and say thank you
- 1:42so much for being on. I've really wanted to be on for
- 1:46a long time, and you're like, wait let's wait, let's wait.
- 1:49And we've been working together for a long time.
- 1:51And finally, I'm like, let's just do it.
- 1:54So, tell me how you're feeling and tell me a little bit about
- 1:58yourself will start there. So my name is Yasmine.
- 2:03I have been a nurse for going on, like a year and eight
- 2:07months. Now I work in the cardiac ICU.
- 2:11I have both to become a flight nurse but also goes to start a
- 2:17real estate business with my husband.
- 2:19Yes, I love this because this is what we first like kind of came
- 2:23together. You sought me out you were
- 2:26talking about and let's talk about that first because I see a
- 2:29lot of entrepreneurs. Words that are in healthcare and
- 2:32I am coaching some people like that, where it's like they think
- 2:36there's this huge separation between what they're wanting to
- 2:39do. And for you, it's like getting
- 2:42into real estate and being a really great nurse to.
- 2:45So tell me like your thoughts on that and how you kind of worked
- 2:48through that. It's been a journey.
- 2:52I feel like I've grown a lot as a nurse out, since we started
- 2:56working together but also like a year and like eight months.
- 3:00In the, you know, the climate of nursing is very different.
- 3:03I feel like that it has been and to kind of, still find a way
- 3:08that this career can serve other people but also serve you.
- 3:12And you like being honest about like what you really want and
- 3:15how you envision your life and you know, we have a tendency to
- 3:20think we can only do one thing. Or I have a tendency to think I
- 3:25can only do one thing at once. One time or I can only be One
- 3:30thing, but I think there's different sides of trying to
- 3:35explore things that like serve you and trying to achieve those
- 3:39goals that can be challenging but also like, you know, it's a
- 3:45part of like growth. I feel like in yourself.
- 3:48Yeah. And we've talked about this a
- 3:50lot and really at the beginning of our conversation that we make
- 3:55the best entrepreneurs or the best people to be able to do two
- 3:58different. Ears because we're so used to
- 4:01multitasking and we've been practicing that our whole career
- 4:06and so like, as you've made that switch in trying to get into
- 4:10real estate and I'm really doing that.
- 4:13Now what are aspects of nursing that you feel like you're going
- 4:17to build to bring in real estate for yourself to make you
- 4:19successful? I think, you know, there's a,
- 4:23there's a great deal of like I'm being compassionate with people
- 4:30kind of trying to understand, like, where they're coming from
- 4:33in nursing. You are in a way, like, problem
- 4:37solving for your patients, and their families, but also trying
- 4:41to educate and give them answers.
- 4:43And like a huge part of real estate that I'm realizing to is
- 4:46like, you know, educating your clients and helping them feel
- 4:50comfortable in the new challenge of whether they're like, trying
- 4:53to look for a house or whatever reason is driving them to buy.
- 4:58And so, I think also just like, solving any issues that might
- 5:03come up like, you know, sometimes there can be a lot of
- 5:07unexpected challenges at work that you just don't foresee in
- 5:11the 12 hours. And that's kind of the same with
- 5:13real estate, whether whatever it might be, like, with client
- 5:17issues that you have to solve. So, I think being I mean,
- 5:22critical thinking problem-solving and just like a
- 5:26girl having empathy for people. Yeah.
- 5:29Yeah I love that and I think that you've really liked worked
- 5:32through some of that, how it's really going to make you a good
- 5:34real estate agent to ultimately seeing the things in critical
- 5:38care, the things that you're working on as well.
- 5:42One other thing that I wanted to really bring you on and talk to
- 5:46you about today was when we first met, your challenge was
- 5:50really this new nurse mentality and I hear a lot of my clients
- 5:55and people come to me and talk to me about that and say, well,
- 5:58I'm just a new nurse and so when I have more experience, then
- 6:05I'll be able to do that. And what I've been really
- 6:08impressed with with you is that as we work through like Is
- 6:13considered a new nurse like what's the time period on it and
- 6:16when we kind of shut down some of those beliefs, you grew so
- 6:20quickly into precepting mentoring.
- 6:25Now doing rapid response training in the short amount of
- 6:29time being in critical care. So tell us about where you kind
- 6:33of started with that journey and where you are now.
- 6:37I think when I first became a nurse I always thought that your
- 6:41knowledge just equated to how much time and experience that
- 6:45you have. And and I do think with time you
- 6:51do gain a lot of knowledge but there's also I think one of the
- 6:54points that you've pointed out like I think as I've stepped
- 6:58into other roles like precepting and Rapid I've always like well
- 7:02I feel like they're choosing me because they don't have anybody
- 7:04else but that's actually like Miss I had you help me debunk as
- 7:11well as just saying like no, like they see something in you,
- 7:14you know there's there's other people that have been there for
- 7:17a while or in time and you know, there's a reason why they aren't
- 7:21assuming these roles. And so it's also not just, I
- 7:27would say time that equates as we know it's a mix of like your
- 7:30will to learn like how you are good with people and like how
- 7:34you know even though I'm my practice is still Early new,
- 7:37it's like these things. These core things that I have
- 7:40incorporated into my practice that help help me.
- 7:45Like, I even now, you know, some calls, I don't even know all the
- 7:49answers. And sometimes I find myself
- 7:50making silly mistakes because I might be moving fast, but my
- 7:54ability to ask questions and like understand and like really
- 7:57use the resources around me as really, what has gotten me
- 8:01through, you know, some situations you when I don't have
- 8:04all the answers. Yeah.
- 8:05And I think you've been Prime example of that for me as far as
- 8:09like as I'm helping you walk through getting rid of this new
- 8:13nurse stigma. You really stepping into the
- 8:15confidence of who you are as a nurse.
- 8:18And other people are seeing that.
- 8:19To the result of that is, they're asking you to be in
- 8:22these positions. So if you would just let people
- 8:26know, like, when we met how far, how long had you been a nurse I
- 8:32probably only been, I think we started like March, so I've
- 8:35probably been a nurse for like six months.
- 8:37Yeah, and now, how long have you been a nurse and you're moving
- 8:41into these roles amazing? Aren't ya amazing?
- 8:52And I want to tell you why? Because a lot of people come to
- 8:54me to work on confidence who have been nurses for two or
- 8:57three years, five years. And they're still saying I still
- 9:01feel like a new nurse. I still feel new and critical
- 9:04care. But you like debunked that and
- 9:08really just as your confidence grew, these roles kept coming to
- 9:13you. What are your thoughts about
- 9:17that? I think one of the things that I
- 9:22learned to, in a way with my comments, I still feel like a
- 9:26very much new nurse but that, like uncertainty and that fear,
- 9:30I think, one of the big things you kind of taught me is like
- 9:34how do you you know kind of work your way through that fear.
- 9:39I get the analogy is like you're riding in a car with it, you
- 9:42know, you kind of take it with you.
- 9:44It's like it's definitely still there but not to the point that
- 9:46it's hindering me from moving forward.
- 9:49It's like, yes, these these fears and these concerns are
- 9:53here and they are definitely valid to have and like accepting
- 9:57the fear of that. But it shouldn't be.
- 9:59What's holding you back? Because sometimes those fears
- 10:04and things they can. I guess it's catastrophizing
- 10:07like you can hash revise a lot of situations but instead of
- 10:12using that they're like, hey, you are scared, you have a right
- 10:15to be scared but this shouldn't be the main thing that's
- 10:20distracting you or causing you to blinding your vision to
- 10:26actually see what like it's in front of you and that you were
- 10:29capable of doing, how have you liked it?
- 10:32Used that fear to really help you in your everyday shift?
- 10:39I think, you know, I mean, I think I use my fear in a way of,
- 10:45it's a good thing. You know, if you're not feel
- 10:47for, if you're not scared in the some aspect, you know, it's
- 10:52another analogy. I like to use is like, Buck
- 10:54Fever. I guess when, you know, when you
- 10:55stop hunting, or like you stop, you know, getting that like
- 10:59fear, then you should stop hunting, if that makes sense,
- 11:02but like was buck deer. Like, if you stop having that
- 11:04fear then I guess your, I feel like I'm losing that challenge.
- 11:10You should try to evaluate longer, why?
- 11:14Made sense. Yeah I love that because like
- 11:18our brain naturally wants to go to all the negative things, fear
- 11:20creates for us, but what you learned how to do was carry, the
- 11:24fear in the car with you and how to make it work for you.
- 11:29And I have one of these moments to where you kind of work
- 11:33through your fear. So when I first became a nurse I
- 11:36did it like a Residency program and I ended up rotating through
- 11:40different Specialties and minor rotation was very hard for me.
- 11:44I dealt with anxiety, really, it was really hard for me.
- 11:48Like I would have moments where I would just like fries and
- 11:50start shaking and I had a lot of good free scepters in neuro and
- 11:55they were very knowledgeable and so I was on a rapid calls my
- 11:59last day. Of training actually.
- 12:00And this was like a few days ago and one of my preceptor Zhao,
- 12:05she was orienting, somebody else to like rapid and I look up and
- 12:10she's there and I start shaking like I started to feel like I
- 12:13was back in neuro and I was like, oh my God!
- 12:16Oh my God, but then I realized I'm like, well, this is your
- 12:18call. Like you still have to do what
- 12:19you have to do and I was like, you know, she puts her pants on
- 12:22one, one leg at a time, just like you and I had to like work
- 12:26through that and I was really proud of myself because I could
- 12:30have just like crumbled, like kind of a, did it a girl?
- 12:32But I didn't and I was like, no, you have to keep going.
- 12:35But I did have a moment where I started the like shaking, like
- 12:38those anxiety moms. And I felt like, I was like,
- 12:41back to being a nurse for like, four or five months, and I was
- 12:43like, no, you have to keep going.
- 12:45So that felt really good to kind of get through in a moment
- 12:47because it was like, I really had to change course, very fast.
- 12:52Yeah, and you've learned to really I think with your
- 12:54confidence, as your confidence cons up, gone up, you've learned
- 12:57how to change courses like that. And what would you say to
- 13:01people? Because I hear this a lot as
- 13:03well and I want to go back to precepting, but I wanted to ask
- 13:05you this question, you know, especially in the ICU as we have
- 13:10around as we have intensivist. As we have people that we have
- 13:14to speak up and ask for things a lot.
- 13:17How did you kind of get over the nervousness of that?
- 13:23I think it was coming from a place of trying to understand
- 13:26why as I progress in this role of Rapid to like sometimes I
- 13:31don't always, I'm trying to like understand the pathway because
- 13:36especially when somebody's like oh do this and I'm like I don't
- 13:40understand why I'm doing this. I am very fast to ask like, why?
- 13:44I like, I'm pretty sure I have annoyed some providers but I
- 13:48would rather understand why I'm doing something and understand
- 13:51the rationale behind Did versus doing something.
- 13:54And then if I don't know why I'm doing it and something happens
- 13:59then I don't know how to fix it. If that makes sense you're like
- 14:03how it sounds like you weren't afraid to ask questions?
- 14:07Yeah. And even though like yeah they
- 14:10got it won't be like really annoying than the like answer me
- 14:12with attitude, I'm like oh thank you because now I understand,
- 14:15because if I meet this again, I'll understand your analogy.
- 14:17Even though you're very annoyed already.
- 14:19But like my big thing is like because yeah.
- 14:22If something happens, how am I going to fix it?
- 14:24If I don't know why in the first place I'm doing it.
- 14:27Yeah, it was like getting over that initial fear of just asking
- 14:31like speaking up and asking. I wanted to go back to
- 14:36precepting because a lot of people have fears of precepting
- 14:39and you've been able to be so successful and doing it, so
- 14:43early on in your career. And I know you believe this
- 14:49thought because your results are showing it, they keep asking you
- 14:53to preset people. And so, what do you think for
- 14:56you? For people who are having fear
- 14:58of precepting? Like what do you think has
- 15:00created success for you and being able to handle that role?
- 15:04I forget somebody is like told me this but like when you're
- 15:09actually able to teach it is when you actually connect truly
- 15:14understand something or like teach it back and so when I
- 15:18started precepting I it was very hard at first I was like, why am
- 15:23I doing this? This was like so unsafe and as I
- 15:27started to it challenged me to seek why but like fine The
- 15:34easier way to explain it in layman's terms or away that
- 15:38like, I could understand. So precepting constantly to see
- 15:43Qui and like, find resources that are easy to understand and
- 15:48like view, things different ways and then also how you explain
- 15:54it. Like, you know, you could use
- 15:56all the, like, the jargon and sometimes, but sometimes I can
- 15:59make it very hard to understand. So like it kind of went back
- 16:03from like language But also, it helped me sometimes with my
- 16:06anxiety because, you know, if somebody is fairly new and that,
- 16:09you know, if they come to you and you want help, like you
- 16:12can't kind of freaked out like that, that won't help the
- 16:15situation. So it also helped me like, stay
- 16:19calm and situations because I'm like, well, this is their time
- 16:22to like learn and I don't want to take away from that by being
- 16:27upset, or clouding, like their judgment just because I'm a
- 16:30little anxious. So, I think priest.
- 16:34Acting helped me grow a lot in that aspect of being able to
- 16:37give clear instructions but also being able to explain in like a
- 16:42timely manner as well. Yeah.
- 16:44And what I'm hearing from you is that actually precepting is
- 16:48teaching you a lot as well. Yeah, teaches me a lot about
- 16:53myself and how I handle situations, but also like how I
- 16:57learn and, like, starting I want to say like, maybe starting a
- 17:03pathway clear. Sure.
- 17:04But like, you know, actually visualizing the anatomy and then
- 17:07breaking it down into little Parts as well as home.
- 17:10Hmm. And one question I want to ask
- 17:13you about coaching to is that you had never been coached prior
- 17:17to us starting to work together. So what what has coaching really
- 17:22taught you? And like, what are some of your
- 17:24biggest takeaway since we've been starting to work together?
- 17:28I mean, it's definitely helped with my confidence is definitely
- 17:32has helped. It's definitely helped me.
- 17:36See, I mean, I'm not I guess I would say in a way.
- 17:42I'm not special, you know, that but not in a bad way but like,
- 17:46oh, you actually are capable like the reasons that you think
- 17:49like, oh everybody is able to do.
- 17:51This is like special. It's like no there's a certain
- 17:55you know there's a certain way to like kind of get through
- 17:57things in like you know, fear isn't necessarily bad and like
- 18:00working through fear can really like limit you but also like
- 18:05Thoughts. Like the thoughts you have
- 18:07behind things really affect like your actions and like how you
- 18:11show up as well. Yeah, we've had like a lot of
- 18:15momentous movement and the time that we've worked together but
- 18:18there was a period in time where you were retracting a little bit
- 18:22and you were like I'm not really getting to my goals like what's
- 18:27going on with me? What do you tell me about that
- 18:29moment? And what shifted for you?
- 18:33In that, I think it was really, you know, really trying to
- 18:39Define what we you know what, my goals were and like why?
- 18:44Because I think for a little bit, I guess you would say you I
- 18:49don't have lost like side of it but you can get really caught up
- 18:53or focused just on one thing and overwhelmed and sometimes you
- 18:57know your energy level just isn't designed to like spread.
- 19:02Add yourself so thin, but sometimes in order to like show
- 19:05up and do things that you want to do you really have to like
- 19:08understand your Y and vision? You know, I thought about like,
- 19:13oh, you know, blaming certain things like, oh, is it because I
- 19:16work night shift or it's because I work so far and things like
- 19:19that and it's like well what are the what are the things that you
- 19:24can still get out of the situation?
- 19:26Like what are you gaining from where you are right now.
- 19:29But then we're do you kind of hope.
- 19:32To be. And like, what are some of the,
- 19:34like goals that you are not achieving in?
- 19:36Like, what, what do you think that struggle is?
- 19:38And how can you leverage where you currently are right now to
- 19:44to get you to where you want to be?
- 19:45You know, what are some of the good things about the situation
- 19:48that you are in that you can use to your advantage to help you
- 19:52get you to your next goal because one of those big goals
- 19:54is one of the challenging things for me is like I have not passed
- 19:58by real-estate test yet and, you know, I think I'm always
- 20:03thinking of the reasons of Why Real Estate like won't work, but
- 20:05like Step One is passing this test and and some of the reasons
- 20:08I have struggled is just allocating time for studying and
- 20:14sometimes my confidence level has been shot at times because
- 20:18I've taken it about four times now and come really close like
- 20:22one on the national one in the state and sometimes it just like
- 20:25shakes your confidence so it's like I've gotten up all this
- 20:28energy and I've studied and then after the test like it's really
- 20:31hard. Because if you Don't study for a
- 20:32month or so you start to kind of lose those skills.
- 20:35So it's like how do I keep that confidence up to make sure I'm
- 20:39honoring a study schedule but also still, you know, showing up
- 20:44and doing the work that I need to do.
- 20:46Yeah. And what I noticed with you,
- 20:48what kind of Switched you back into gear was one, just trusting
- 20:51yourself. Like you started, trusting
- 20:54yourself that each thing that you were doing was the right
- 20:56thing for you? And then the second thing was
- 20:59you stop telling yourself, I don't know.
- 21:05When you stop saying like, I don't know, and I was like, but
- 21:07if you did know, what would be your next thing?
- 21:10That's when you came up with all these solutions for yourself to
- 21:13get yourself, sick, success in those areas.
- 21:18I would definitely agree with that and that's why I'm still
- 21:20trying to keep. I think, for the past month,
- 21:23I've actually stayed true and like honored, this study
- 21:26schedule because I also know like it's not forever, it's not
- 21:29temporary. I mean it is temporary.
- 21:32And by honoring this to myself, like I won't, I won't regret
- 21:37this because I think for me like the next chapter is how Once I
- 21:42pass this test with. Like how do you honor like both
- 21:46and like kind of show up for both?
- 21:48Both in a way to kind of get to the goals that I'm trying to
- 21:51achieve, you know. And I think in a way we've
- 21:54talked and I was like, you know, I'm very happy where I am right
- 21:57right now. But I think the next step is
- 22:00kind of passing my test and getting to where I want to be in
- 22:04real estate. And then moving forward for the
- 22:07next steps of like, my nursing career, which would be like,
- 22:09starting to Pursuits. Like, okay.
- 22:11Yeah, I love that. And what is she like?
- 22:13Now your confidence level and being able to do all Things I
- 22:20would still say it definitely waxes and wanes some days it's
- 22:23like yeah this is a 9 to 10 and some days it's like this is a
- 22:26five this is a for like why are you so why are you so much
- 22:32money? Like no.
- 22:33I'm right where I'm supposed to be in, like trying to forgive
- 22:37myself in those moments and understanding that, you know,
- 22:40some days I can give 110% some days like I can't but even the
- 22:45amount that I do give is enough and, you know, No.
- 22:48I still unable to be able to hit Michael that I'm looking for.
- 22:52Yeah, I love that. And last question for you.
- 22:56What's like then, either something that you've learned in
- 23:00our time working together or in your time as a nurse that has
- 23:05been really helpful for you in gaining, the success that you
- 23:10have right now. I think one of the biggest
- 23:18things is I mean, working in critical care and seeing a lot
- 23:22of death. It's just also realizing how
- 23:25short life is and I think one of the things I have talked to you
- 23:29about is like how do I you honor your patience and life in a
- 23:34certain way. It's like you know you realizing
- 23:39you know how am I doing the things that you know, I would
- 23:42look back and be happy that I did that I tried Not regret.
- 23:47And I think also, I mean, one of the things I have learned
- 23:51working with you is just, you know, our thoughts, really do
- 23:55matter in. Like, the way that we talk to
- 23:58ourselves and also, you know, there is when sometimes you are
- 24:02feeling like there's no way out there are steps that you can
- 24:06take like, you know, I guess we could say our pathway of, you
- 24:10know, first acknowledging, my fear to solving the problem like
- 24:13finding the resources, I find myself.
- 24:16No, going back. Am I using the right word?
- 24:18Is it pathway when we call that the past?
- 24:21Which was your, this was your path.
- 24:23This was your path to overcoming fear that.
- 24:25I love that we go back to. Yeah.
- 24:28And and also just working with you.
- 24:31Realizing how much fear has like effect on my life and how much
- 24:34overcoming. The fear has also benefited
- 24:37being way looking back. And I think some of the things
- 24:40to it's like what are situations that you can look back on that,
- 24:43you like overcome. Like when you've overcome fear
- 24:46There and you know the steps are very similar.
- 24:50Yeah. Repetitive yet what's great too
- 24:52is and I think that, you know, I'm curious what your thought
- 24:56about it is that most of my clients when I'm working with
- 24:58them, on one thing that they want to be better at whether
- 25:01it's career rise or whatever, it is that it trickles into the
- 25:04rest of their life. And so like with that, fear has
- 25:09have you been able to apply that to not just your career as well?
- 25:16Yeah, I would definitely send be able to apply that to real
- 25:19estate but also just like my life like what like you know, I
- 25:23can tell you all the things like some of the girls I attained hit
- 25:26or just a little bit different. And I'm always like, what if it
- 25:28doesn't work? Like this is crazy.
- 25:30Like, why am I doing this? But it's like, you know,
- 25:33acknowledging like a lot of that talk is like from fear and once
- 25:38I like Center myself and I'm like, these are, this is why I
- 25:41like this is, you know, you are where you are, meant to be, you
- 25:45know, So when I overcome the idea of like, okay W like why do
- 25:52you want these things to really think about like how it will
- 25:54serve. Serve me and like serve my life.
- 25:57I'm able to like kind of get through that we had fog.
- 26:01Yeah, I love that. Well, thank you so much for
- 26:04being on. I know that you work night and
- 26:07it's hard to schedule and Beyond this.
- 26:10Oh, I really appreciate, you know, you talking about candidly
- 26:14this new nurse My some of the fears that you've had, I really
- 26:18think that a lot of people listening are going to be able
- 26:21to take something from that. Well, I appreciate you Janessa
- 26:26so much. I don't think I would be where I
- 26:29am right now. Definitely, we haven't started
- 26:31working together, so I'm very thankful and I'm just so happy
- 26:35to continue to work together. You're a lot of fun to coach,
