- 0:01Oh God. I was, cause we were talking to someone
- 0:24else about like nails and I'm like, I can't.
- 0:27And I was just like, I can't have long nails.
- 0:28Cause I play the bass. And the person I had been
- 0:31talking to for two hours, like, yeah, I can't
- 0:32have long nails because of my sex life. I'm like,
- 0:34God damn it. Are we talking about hand jobs?
- 0:36Yeah. Inside hand jobs. Inside hand jobs. I mean,
- 0:40it's all a hand job, right? It was an inside
- 0:43job, though. The hand came from within. It's
- 0:47coming from inside the house. Hey, hey, now,
- 0:52hey, now, hey, now. I want you to use your outside
- 0:55hand job. Inside handjobs would have been sort
- 1:01of like taboo back in 1930s. I mean, you know,
- 1:07all gay things was taboo in the 1930s. That's
- 1:12true. Nobody said an inside handjob was gay.
- 1:16I mean, that's fingering. Or it's a handjob in
- 1:18jail. Yeah. It's an in -the -joint handjob. Joint
- 1:25job. A good classic joint job. Of all the joint
- 1:29jobs. I had to walk into this one. Yeah, we're
- 1:35going to do the whole podcast like this scene?
- 1:37Yeah. Yeah. Immediately, my first complaint about
- 1:43the show is the is. There's this whole shtick
- 1:48scene. Oh, man. Okay, yeah. Nick, how do you
- 1:53feel about that? It does not bother me. Actually,
- 1:56in fact, the time when he was behind the door
- 1:59or whatever, and you just hear him say, I lose
- 2:02it every time. Welcome back. Before we get started,
- 2:06welcome back to Cage. I'm Sean, here with my
- 2:11co -host, Nick. And our producer. peter hello
- 2:16i feel like i came in at a weird cadence when
- 2:19i started that and i just kind of had to keep
- 2:21it going oh yeah just ride it yeah you were just
- 2:23like a hair slow and i was just ready i was just
- 2:26edging all the way up until i had to bust my
- 2:29name out felt like a weird inside hand job but
- 2:31you know um and we are discussing the first two
- 2:36episodes of spider and the wall yeah nick cage's
- 2:40first tv show which is kind of fucking amazing
- 2:44first scripted tv show he did do the history
- 2:47of swearing on netflix well okay but that's like
- 2:50a netflix kind of sure and it was a series but
- 2:53it wasn't so much which we should do at some
- 2:56point we should watch some of those episodes
- 2:58but it wasn't like a scripted show he wasn't
- 3:02acting yeah i'm sure there was a script i think
- 3:07you just had to say fuck a lot yeah yeah that's
- 3:09pretty good though pretty good i mean of all
- 3:12the things to say it's a pretty good career solid
- 3:15one yeah it's worked for samuel jackson and it
- 3:18worked for jonah hill that's true yeah uh all
- 3:23right i just want to i want to share speaking
- 3:24of sam jackson um there's a line in ted 2 where
- 3:29gross they meet the new love interest who's sam
- 3:32jackson samantha jackson samantha like louise
- 3:35jackson like oh shit you're sam l jackson and
- 3:38she's like who's that it's like you ever see
- 3:39a movie black guy i got to use a similar line
- 3:44um yesterday because my co -workers like had
- 3:48to host stand up and she's like i don't have
- 3:50anything interesting so i googled celebrity birthdays
- 3:52i'm like any elfman's birthday and she's like
- 3:54i don't know who that is i'm like you ever see
- 3:56a movie he wrote the score yeah pretty much if
- 4:00it was fun if it was a fun score yeah it was
- 4:03a little zany um every once in a while there'll
- 4:10be like a really like umber like good music score
- 4:14i'm like it was really good who did that i'm
- 4:16like and it'll be daniel but i'm like ah weird
- 4:19yeah yeah what'd you think of the score of this
- 4:22tv show by kirby by kirby my therapist yeah that's
- 4:29the one did you know i mean that'd be cool if
- 4:34you just like him to not tell me he did another
- 4:36he was associated with more nick cage shit Yeah.
- 4:39Maybe they're not allowed to tell you. I don't
- 4:41know. It could be a conflict of interest. Yeah.
- 4:45He could actually introduce you to Nick Cage.
- 4:48Kirby hasn't been my therapist for well over
- 4:50a year now. What is it, two years before you
- 4:52can be friends with your therapist? I think you
- 4:55just never can be friends with your therapist.
- 4:57Yes. They know too many of your dark secrets.
- 5:00Yeah. Yeah, well, they can't just like be dominating
- 5:02all your time by flexing on you all the time.
- 5:06Too many inside hand jobs. Yeah. How how bad
- 5:10would that feel if you were just paying your
- 5:12therapist and they bragged like for an hour every
- 5:14week, just bragging at you? And it's like, all
- 5:17right, same time next week. I'll keep taking
- 5:20your money. I'm about to go do something fun.
- 5:22Have fun, loser with your sad ass life. I should
- 5:27be a therapist. All right, let's talk Spider
- 5:30Noir. I'm feeling it now. Yeah, you ready? It's
- 5:33got me. It's got me. captured now i just took
- 5:35a big nap um or in in lead up to this because
- 5:39i was feeling fucking exhausted dude same how
- 5:41long was your nap let's talk about that how great
- 5:43is a nap a nap story oh yeah as as people in
- 5:48our now almost 42s or whatever you old piece
- 5:52of shit yeah it feels great to take a nap it
- 5:55was weird taking a night nap though oh yeah i'm
- 5:58really glad that might be it's you're running
- 6:01a dangerous game into turning it into just sleep
- 6:04yeah which i could have yeah if i didn't have
- 6:08this going on i probably would have rolled right
- 6:10into sleep totally would have been fine with
- 6:12it which is a sad saturday no it's a great saturday
- 6:15afternoon i uh i got my haircut today and uh
- 6:18the girl who does my hair she's talking about
- 6:21her kid being on like summer break soon and how
- 6:23he's six and doesn't nap and i'm like fucking
- 6:26kids are dumb fucking naps are amazing that's
- 6:29all i want to do as an adult yeah well it feels
- 6:32like a punishment when you're a kid because then
- 6:34you've just got all that energy and yeah you're
- 6:37uh being forced you're forced to do it that's
- 6:40the shitty part is like you have to do it yeah
- 6:42choosing a nap now that's the fucking sweet spot
- 6:45also the best part about being an adult and napping
- 6:47is it's just like it's 20 minutes closer to death
- 6:50that i don't have to exist God, I long for the
- 6:54long nap. The sweet, sweet little deaths. Wait,
- 7:01that's orgasms, right? Spider Noir is... Spider
- 7:05Noir is... I wouldn't know. Gotta get one of
- 7:09those inside hand jobs. Oh, we brought it back.
- 7:13Oh, my God. Spider Noir is a lot of fun, much
- 7:16like this conversation. It doesn't make a lot
- 7:19of sense, and there's weird accent work, but
- 7:21I'm enjoying it. I kind of liked his accent.
- 7:25I don't, it doesn't bother me that much. The
- 7:26sort of like marble mouth sort of style. I don't,
- 7:32I don't mind the accent work at all. I really
- 7:34enjoy what he's doing. I really enjoyed the whole
- 7:36like shtick. My only minor issue is just like
- 7:41him and Gleason are in the same show. No one
- 7:46else is in the same show as these two. I don't
- 7:49know. I mean, Janet's like a fast talking smart
- 7:52lady. Yeah. You know, she's got the vibe. I think
- 7:55Janet exists in the same world. I think Robinson
- 7:58or Robbie. Robbie. Cat Hardy. I don't know. She's
- 8:02she's just sort of doing like sexy lady. Yeah.
- 8:05She's very much like a socialite. Noir. Angel.
- 8:09Angel. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Character. So
- 8:12everyone everyone is doing a very good job. It's
- 8:16specifically. and it comes across nick cage's
- 8:18love for classic films for silent film work he's
- 8:22doing a lot of like silent film style like body
- 8:25work um there's one when we talk about episodes
- 8:29three and four there's one so we'll talk about
- 8:31that for sure i want to mention so he's doing
- 8:33but he's doing there's a lot of like that pre
- 8:35-talky energy that nick cage is bringing it goes
- 8:39back to my thing about how when we did um planet
- 8:43terror it's like it's hard to watch good actors
- 8:47try and act poorly so there's aspects of this
- 8:51where it's like it's hard to watch really good
- 8:53actors try and act in a way that was like being
- 8:58invented when talkies first came out and they're
- 9:02not used to acting this way and it's just like
- 9:03sometimes it feels forced in a way that i'm like
- 9:06i'd wish you just play the scene straight yeah
- 9:11i can see that um yeah yeah either way but i'm
- 9:15enjoying it it's just like there there are definitely
- 9:16parts where i'm like let's just move on from
- 9:18like not everybody needs to be at that same level
- 9:24as cage right i need everyone to be 20 less hammy
- 9:28or 20 more hammy i need like i either need the
- 9:31full honey baked or like just let nick cage do
- 9:34his thing yeah Yeah, I think it's a stupid sketch
- 9:37about smiling and the whitest kids. Yeah. I want
- 9:43you to happier with your mouth open. well chief
- 9:50it could use i see what you mean it could be
- 9:53uh like tuned up to that level a little bit no
- 9:55i think it's it's actually a really fun show
- 9:58and i think it's done really well i'm impressed
- 10:00with it so far i'm enjoying it so far um heads
- 10:04up we're gonna spoil it we're gonna talk about
- 10:05the the first two episodes here um pretty candidly
- 10:08so we're not dancing around it if you haven't
- 10:11watched it yet and don't want to hear what the
- 10:12plot line is stop listening and then come back
- 10:14later My expectations of this when I first heard
- 10:18about the show were extraordinarily low and I
- 10:21kept them as low as possible because I did not
- 10:25want to get excited about it. Yeah, well, Sony
- 10:27did a really good job of making everybody, I
- 10:31hope, very unexcited about the prospect of any
- 10:35non MCU Spider -Man like affiliated video. Oh,
- 10:40my God. Is this just been like a prolonged like.
- 10:44edging which is like or it's morbid time madam
- 10:48webb um oh my god brave and the hunter we're
- 10:52just gonna keep you super soft so you can bust
- 10:54all over as white and noir yeah we're just gonna
- 10:58give you a little bit of venom every once in
- 11:00a while to sort of like keep you maybe get you
- 11:02going it could it could still happen we could
- 11:04still enjoy this yeah um but yes this movie or
- 11:11this uh show is uh it's really captured my attention
- 11:16like i really enjoy watching every episode yeah
- 11:18uh the length of the episodes i really enjoy
- 11:22i think the 45 minute ish mark is really good
- 11:24spot for it sweet spot i was really i was honestly
- 11:27expecting quick 22 minute episodes i'm so that's
- 11:30what i was thinking too happy that they're like
- 11:32actually full like 45 42 to 45 minute episodes
- 11:36um i went into this with the expectation of we
- 11:41were going to get throughout the entire show
- 11:4412 minutes of spider -man um my watching the
- 11:49first trailer of him swinging through new york
- 11:52i thought was gonna be like that's gonna be like
- 11:54that was their entire effects budget in that
- 11:56trailer that's gonna be the end of the show and
- 12:01that's what it starts with uh his voiceover and
- 12:04backstory and that like the ropey the cgi work
- 12:10is not great but it's it's tv i'm not mad at
- 12:14it but i really expected that to be the closer
- 12:17of the show but no he's swinging from he's swinging
- 12:21from the word go he's spider -man the entire
- 12:23time so i appreciate that that's what we're doing
- 12:27yeah the swinging is kind of whatever that's
- 12:31about the weakest part i think of the visuals
- 12:34of this definitely yeah i think sean you put
- 12:37it as like kind of a rubbery cgi spider -man
- 12:39you know and that's that is how it looks and
- 12:41feels but you know there's a lot of good practical
- 12:44effects in general and then oh god his webbing
- 12:48is like kind of repulsive yeah yeah organic webbing
- 12:52should be gross it should be gross and it is
- 12:54gross especially in the black and white it looks
- 12:58like gnarly i like how just uh in the in the
- 13:02black and white for sure they do such a good
- 13:04job of making it like distinct and like visible
- 13:08like the times where it looks darker or like
- 13:11when it's like really light uh it stands out
- 13:14all the time yeah we're all watching in black
- 13:17and white right correct i did watch the first
- 13:20two in color afterwards but so i started the
- 13:23first one in true hue after watching it in black
- 13:25and white and i watched the opening scene the
- 13:30cg looks infinitely worse in color like the black
- 13:33and white hides so much yeah artifacting and
- 13:37like makes it look a lot better um but as soon
- 13:40as we got and then we got the first scene with
- 13:42him in the um in the bar and my first immediate
- 13:47notice is like they they lit this to ultimately
- 13:52be shown in black and white they did no color
- 13:53correction for the true hue so it just it looks
- 13:57really muddy and just it looks really off um
- 14:00i did not enjoy it yeah well it's it's costumed
- 14:04and all the scenery and stuff is designed to
- 14:09kind of reflect a uh like a colorized film so
- 14:13it's like if a black and white film got restored
- 14:15and colorized um so they wouldn't have designed
- 14:19it for color so you would have had deeper shadows
- 14:22and all that kind of stuff so that makes some
- 14:24sense and then also just like the uh the the
- 14:27saturation of colors and stuff to make things
- 14:30distinct in black and white is also uh very much
- 14:34present um i do like the a lot of the costuming
- 14:37in color um there are some things that like in
- 14:42black and white i think are just still ultimately
- 14:45better costuming wise like uh cat's dress in
- 14:48the night uh nightclub clearly that is the intended
- 14:53like version um and i was talking with a friend
- 14:58of mine yesterday about it and he was just like
- 15:03well why why even release it both ways and we
- 15:05both came to the conclusion that there is a subset
- 15:08of people who just will not watch something in
- 15:10black and white they just refuse to because they
- 15:13think it's they think it looks cheap or it's
- 15:16like i i once dated someone who'd never seen
- 15:19clerks because she's like that's a black and
- 15:20white movie and i'm like Yeah, my ex -wife really
- 15:24struggled with black and white stuff. She really,
- 15:26really had a hard time with it. For whatever
- 15:28reason, it just like made her brain kind of turn
- 15:30off. She was like, I don't know. This is just
- 15:32like not fun for me to watch. Yeah. So I find
- 15:36it really delightful. And I really love, especially
- 15:38that they played into it. It's like whoever the,
- 15:41you know, the directors, the DPs, like they're
- 15:44playing with these deep shadows, long cast lights.
- 15:47It's really, really pretty and it's well done.
- 15:50And it makes you think about like. old tv old
- 15:53movies like they they caught the vibe really
- 15:55nicely yeah and they did a really good job with
- 15:58the uh capturing that noir uh appearance definitely
- 16:02my friend uh kaylee like text me if i was asking
- 16:05to watch if i was watching the show she said
- 16:08no bitch i hate nick cage so i was and i asked
- 16:11her i'm like are you watching black and white
- 16:13or color she said color and my response was incorrect
- 16:16start over Her response was, ha ha, fuck that.
- 16:22It's not actually 1930s LMAO. And I'm like, incorrect.
- 16:27I will say the one thing that stood out to me
- 16:30better in color in these first two episodes is
- 16:33Flint Marco's character of Sandman. I think that
- 16:36the animation of like his skin and everything
- 16:41works better in color than it did in black and
- 16:44white. I think it didn't read as much in that
- 16:46scene when I was watching it. the true way does
- 16:51look like he just has like eczema in black yeah
- 16:56yeah exactly like that guy just needs to exfoliate
- 16:59a little bit maybe all right yeah up until the
- 17:02point where he goes all sandy hand and like uh
- 17:05sandy i do not want a sandy handy I don't know.
- 17:13Restore that youthful feeling. Bust all those
- 17:15calluses and shit off. You're right. Oh, my calloused
- 17:18dick. Just fully. It releases the skin's freshest
- 17:23layer. Uh huh. Uh huh. Yeah. The dick and noticeably.
- 17:27a notably calloused tool what is this episode
- 17:31let's talk about the plot line of this show we're
- 17:35all well underslept clearly yeah all right so
- 17:39we'll give the quick rundown so nick cage is
- 17:42ben reilly he's a spider -man um and the spider
- 17:48He's the spider. He's the legally distinct the
- 17:51spider. The spider. So he's been a hero for a
- 17:54while. His hopeful fiance dies and he hangs it
- 18:00up for a bit to become a private eye. Maybe he
- 18:03was a private eye before. I don't know. Doesn't
- 18:04matter. He could have been both. No, he was a
- 18:07photographer. Whatever. It doesn't matter. Robbie
- 18:11was a photographer. robbie was a photographer
- 18:13but they also talk about how ben was a good photographer
- 18:15too yeah because ben always always good shots
- 18:18the spider right now kind of that classic peter
- 18:21parker situation like oh how'd you always get
- 18:22those great shots we're kind of buddies yeah
- 18:25yeah um he has a secretary named janet janet
- 18:30yeah who's played by karen rodriguez and she's
- 18:33fucking awesome she's my favorite she's incredible
- 18:35yeah she nails that role so fucking well yeah
- 18:38his buddy um robbie robertson played by um lamar
- 18:44morris fucking awesome i love that guy too fucking
- 18:47winnie the bush he's great he's so fun he was
- 18:52good in black and white too like his style is
- 18:54so fucking nice his suits look really nice in
- 18:57color though i believed it so yeah it was like
- 19:00oh man he's he's sharp i love him in everything
- 19:04and i think it's episode three there's one episode
- 19:07where he just like he gets to do just a little
- 19:09bit of slapstick and i'm like i think that's
- 19:12three yeah yeah guess who i am yeah i did like
- 19:17his ketchup sandwich though yes so depressing
- 19:21or depression meals depression meals i do my
- 19:25favorite i will say my favorite line from the
- 19:26first episode is when robbie and uh ben are having
- 19:31lunch and robbie like takes to pickle up ben's
- 19:35plate and just goes That's a used pickle, Robbie.
- 19:38He eats it and he's just like... Yeah. Well,
- 19:41fuck it, you're poor. Like, fuck it, that's the
- 19:43depression. It is, right? Gotta eat. Then we've
- 19:46got Lee Jun Lee is Cat Hardy, who's this lounge
- 19:49singer. And then the sort of big bad in it, Silvermane,
- 19:54is played by Brendan Gleeson, who... to sean's
- 19:58point earlier really does feast in this role
- 20:00i mean they let him loose and he's he's scary
- 20:03like he's he does a good job so my immediate
- 20:06read on this show is just like just because we're
- 20:09talking about the cast my immediate read on this
- 20:11entire cast is how many of these people just
- 20:14signed on to do something with nicholas cage
- 20:16i mean it could be that it could be that like
- 20:20the concept of doing a Spider -Man TV show was
- 20:22interesting. I mean, doing this 1930s sort of
- 20:25weird twist on it is cool. I mean, it's very
- 20:28stylized. It's very different. Yeah. You know,
- 20:33it's a, what is it? Lord and Miller. Yeah. Lord
- 20:36and Miller. Who executive produced this entire
- 20:38thing. And like, obviously Spider -Verse is very
- 20:41stylized and very appealing to people to be a
- 20:43part of. So you'd hope that they would be. successful
- 20:48with something like this too yeah there's a there's
- 20:50a lot of draw uh nicholas cage lord and miller
- 20:53just based on the first two episodes and i have
- 20:57not finished the show yet but based on the first
- 20:59two episodes uh and if you do know the answer
- 21:01to this don't answer it but if you haven't finished
- 21:03it and i'm talking to you too and like want to
- 21:07chime in just in terms of speculation because
- 21:09he does reference in the like the first line
- 21:12of the show is like you know someone once told
- 21:14me there are other dimensions but this is the
- 21:16only dimension i've ever known um is it supposed
- 21:19to be the same spider -man do you think like
- 21:23is ben reilly like uh nom de pleur oh yeah i've
- 21:29i've seen the speculation that ben reilly is
- 21:32a name that he puts on uh for the show but his
- 21:36real name is peter parker uh i I don't think
- 21:39that we're looking at the Spider -Man noir character.
- 21:45It'd be amazing if he just busted out a Rubik's
- 21:48Cube at some point. I was going to say, I've
- 21:50been looking in the background for it. That would
- 21:53be pretty funny. For some reason in color. No
- 21:56matter what version you choose. Goddamn. But
- 22:00it's inscrutable. I'm going to figure this out.
- 22:04Who wants to do episode one? to kind of run down
- 22:10oh man uh i'm gonna have a hard time trying to
- 22:14keep my episodes it's tough right um so episode
- 22:19one we get the introduction to spider -man we
- 22:22find out that he's been retired for five years
- 22:25after his fiancee died in what seems to be some
- 22:30type of drowning incident yeah she seems to be
- 22:33handcuffed to the steering wheel of that car
- 22:35as it's going down which definitely kind of feels
- 22:38like a silvermane or some crime boss yeah some
- 22:43revenge came after the spider found out about
- 22:45her and but so ben has just become a private
- 22:50eye but one that has a bit of a like is overly
- 22:55cautious and a bit of a conscience like he he
- 22:58turns away work or he'll take work but then won't
- 23:00charge people or give them their money back To
- 23:03the chagrin of a secretary who hasn't been paid
- 23:05in months. Oh, my God. When he hands the money
- 23:07back to Carmody and it just has that brief shot
- 23:11of her and her eyes just get really big. Oh,
- 23:15gosh, she's so good. She's the best. She's my
- 23:17favorite character. Yeah. OK, so he gets hired
- 23:21to investigate Cat Hardy, who this really ugly
- 23:27man with no charm, no charm, no wit. Yeah. claims
- 23:32is his wife but clearly is being you know some
- 23:36part of a setup yeah so he climbs up to the penthouse
- 23:40of this gigantic fucking building without using
- 23:43his spider powers the the sad look on his face
- 23:46when he just kind of is like all the way up a
- 23:49penthouse uh penthouse a climbs up the fire escape
- 23:52he's climbing up the fire escape goes by a window
- 23:55where a guy is looking stamps and sticking them
- 23:57to his like shirtless torso and he's a big hairy
- 24:01guy and then just camera comes in off the side
- 24:04and click yeah that's i think uh probably one
- 24:08of our first looney tunes ish kind of uh yeah
- 24:12illusions in this show yeah so he catches the
- 24:17mayor he doesn't realize it at the time like
- 24:20soliciting cat hardy yeah oh yeah he wants to
- 24:24get handy he wants the inside hand job uh and
- 24:28you know she slaps him and then cage sprays him
- 24:32with spider goop yeah webs him before he can
- 24:35slap her back and and this disappears yeah so
- 24:39then goes to the nightclub to keep tracking her
- 24:43down yeah they switch the plan he's gonna now
- 24:46blackmail her yeah because so he gets when he
- 24:50realizes that it's the mayor he's like because
- 24:52he gives ugly guy gives the money back he's like
- 24:55i can't do this job for you she's a loyal loving
- 24:58wife your your wife is your wife loves you mr
- 25:01carmody aren't you so thrilled yeah uh there's
- 25:05no chance it's with that syphilitic walrus he's
- 25:08gonna blackmail uh he's gonna blackmail kat hardy
- 25:11with pictures of her with the mayor um we get
- 25:14that amazing like lounge singer scene yeah um
- 25:18which kind of like it's a very modern musical
- 25:23beat and musical number and i fucking loved it
- 25:26like i was just like the camera work was great
- 25:28it's really good i want the show i wanted the
- 25:30show to lean more into that going forward uh
- 25:32and episode two it kind of doesn't um i do love
- 25:37her outfits and i love whenever she's on screen
- 25:39um there's one i think it's episode two um might
- 25:43be episode three but there's one uh there's one
- 25:45where she's like on stage and she just has like
- 25:48this fractal mirror, like background behind her.
- 25:51And I'm just so enamored with a time where you
- 25:57experienced music live. Cause that's the old,
- 25:59that would be the only way to experience it.
- 26:01You would just go see a singer on a nightly basis.
- 26:05Cause that's what entertainment was. And now
- 26:08the kids have their hippity hop and their EDM
- 26:11and it's just loud. And I hate it. I'm old. yeah
- 26:17uh okay so then she she has her sort of like
- 26:20enforcer protector lover flint marco who's there
- 26:25and he kind of strong arms ben out of the the
- 26:29nightclub we get that great shot of him uh following
- 26:33yeah ben later oh my god the alley shots were
- 26:37just these long cast shadows and yeah and flint's
- 26:40in that white suit so he just stark contrast
- 26:42it's like spy versus spy almost ben is just utilizing
- 26:46like street urchins and street youths to like
- 26:49be his like his um his eyes and ears around the
- 26:52streets that little kid's great i love that kid
- 26:55oh fucking uh the first scene uh where we introduced
- 26:58the kid where he's like selling newspapers and
- 27:00ben walks up to him hands the kid a coin and
- 27:04then the kid goes into the paybook the payphone
- 27:06drops his own coin in the payphone and like fishes
- 27:10it out with the hell yeah yeah he's got like
- 27:13a quarter on a string and it just costs a nickel
- 27:16for that yeah and i'm like fucking amazing that
- 27:19kid's like that kid's going places absolutely
- 27:21he's a little pickpocket uh again spy yeah yeah
- 27:27an actor as we see in like episode three or four
- 27:30when ben is like yeah so when ben's leaving the
- 27:33club um he goes to like put some money in the
- 27:36kids uh kids cup and he's like is there a guy
- 27:39following me white suit And yeah, the kid's like,
- 27:42yeah. Yeah, do I have a white tail? Yeah, it's
- 27:46good. So then Flint confronts him up on the top
- 27:51of a construction tower or something, which weird
- 27:54choice. But I mean, if you're the spider, if
- 27:56you're Spider -Man, yeah, it's the perfect choice.
- 27:58Yeah. So Flint, very strong, starts punching
- 28:04the shit out of Ben. And then Ben clocks him
- 28:08with a piece of wood. Yeah. knocks him down okay
- 28:11what not just clock some of the piece of wood
- 28:13this was amazing like going back to the looney
- 28:15tunes of it all like ben is getting like beat
- 28:17up um gets thrown off the building webs his way
- 28:20back on so we actually see him like old spider
- 28:23out um but is like on his back goes to grab a
- 28:27crowbar marco steps on the hand with the crowbar
- 28:31and then ben gives him a sly wink and then cracks
- 28:33him with a piece of wood in his other hand Yeah,
- 28:36it's a quit watching the mouth. Watch the hands.
- 28:39Yeah. I love how bad he is at landing. anytime
- 28:45he webs somewhere he's pretty bad he just kind
- 28:47of flops into it's like he like an old man he's
- 28:51like oh my back i mean he's six he's in his six
- 28:54like nick cage is in his 60s nick's yeah nick
- 28:57cage is 62 so like it does make sense and if
- 29:00they're playing him as like you know he's in
- 29:02his 50s or something like that and he's been
- 29:04retired for five years right stop we need to
- 29:08stop like putting we need we need to stop putting
- 29:10uh 30 something year old 20 and 30 something
- 29:14year old woman with nick cage as a potential
- 29:16love interest yeah i mean it's hard to tell like
- 29:20white people age so poorly so cat hardy could
- 29:23be in her 40s and looks you know significantly
- 29:27better but when we talk about when we talk about
- 29:30three and four i do want to touch on that um
- 29:32but i'm just thinking like whenever we have a
- 29:34flashback with him and and uh with his fiance
- 29:37with ruby and it's just like they're dancing
- 29:40i'm like she's holding up that old man yeah it
- 29:43does look like you're dancing with your dad you
- 29:45know yeah they were different times sean yeah
- 29:49simpler times simpler times also it was the 1920s
- 29:53that man is that man is a hard 40. it's a good
- 29:58point yeah i mean like you think about inside
- 29:59smoking rampant drinking plus being the spider
- 30:04yeah yeah also they do not shy away from smoking
- 30:07in the show everybody fucking smokes everybody
- 30:09smokes yeah a lot of smoking even like the kids
- 30:13smoke so much oh yeah yeah so we missed we missed
- 30:16one sort of like main beat that ties it all to
- 30:19silvermane so Silvermane, this like mobster of
- 30:22New York, right? He's an enemy of the mayor.
- 30:25He's just like the guy who's kind of run rampant
- 30:28since the spider has retired. He his mansion
- 30:32got burned down by somebody with weird powers,
- 30:34it seems. And Ben early in this is paid to track
- 30:40this guy down. He sees him light himself on fire.
- 30:43Another detective shoots the guy to death. Things
- 30:46are hinky about the entire thing. But now Silvermane's
- 30:49all like wise to the fact that there are supers.
- 30:52I think he wants to, you know, manipulate that
- 30:54as much as possible. He wants one of his own.
- 30:56Yeah, he wants one of his own. And the other
- 30:59detective gets killed by Silvermane because he
- 31:01doesn't have enough info. And Silvermane wants
- 31:03Ben Reilly as his next target to get more information
- 31:06on who's putting the hit out on him. Because
- 31:08that's kind of the big subtext of the first two,
- 31:11three episodes is why is someone trying to kill
- 31:14Silvermane and who is it? Yeah. Who's the double
- 31:17cross? Who's the snitch? Who's everything? So
- 31:20episode one ends with Cat Hardy hiring Ben to
- 31:24find Flint Marco because he has vanished. Yeah.
- 31:28Flint's on the lam. Yeah. And we go rapidly into
- 31:32episode two. Yeah. What happens in episode two?
- 31:35It kind of begins the reveal that Flint and Addison,
- 31:40the flame guy, now dead, were. part of a world
- 31:48war one yes world war one troop yeah that were
- 31:54pows at some point in the war and something is
- 31:58weird about that yeah but we don't know why yet
- 32:01yeah two guys powery same uh same pow camp in
- 32:07this episode uh robbie goes to a hooverville
- 32:11to find um marco or to like find addison's wife
- 32:18yeah uh and then meets another super um who is
- 32:23another black man and we find out that they wouldn't
- 32:27have been in the same company at that time because
- 32:29the companies were still segregated which is
- 32:31how they figure out that they were in a pow camp
- 32:33together that's right that's right yeah so he
- 32:35meets lonnie um who has weird bumpy face yeah
- 32:41yep uh So I don't know a lot of like deep Spider
- 32:46-Man character. So I'm trying to figure this
- 32:49out. Who is Lonnie supposed to be? He's Tombstone.
- 32:52I don't know anything about Tombstone. OK, so
- 32:56that's what I thought. Because Tombstone in the
- 32:57Spider -Verse is like a Frankenstein monster.
- 33:00Well, so Tombstone is like he's a concrete man.
- 33:02He's a stone man. He's like the thing. So when
- 33:04he had kind of the weird like shitness, like
- 33:09kind of like insectoid, like. plates i'm just
- 33:14like is he supposed to be scorpion no yeah it
- 33:17looks more like carapace in terms sometimes than
- 33:20uh others it's not my favorite of the designs
- 33:23for sure yeah it is definitely lazier is a word
- 33:28yes in terms of like but also i guess you can't
- 33:31do a big gray stone man in black and white yeah
- 33:35you have to you've already got sand man so yeah
- 33:38exima boy exima boy Oh, yeah. So, you know, this
- 33:44episode, I think, is what you touched on earlier.
- 33:46It features Robbie a little bit more. We see
- 33:48him eat a ketchup sandwich, which is like so
- 33:50depressing. But it is the depression. I do love
- 33:53the number of times we see Nicolas Cage eat a
- 33:56hot dog. I do not like the way he eats the hot
- 33:58dog later, like in the later episodes. Just basically
- 34:03like. pulling the bun apart to just get wiener
- 34:08it's like not eating the bun just like get that
- 34:11out of here just straight into it it's like god
- 34:14that's disturbing yeah it's not the best but
- 34:18i mean that bread might be terrible everybody
- 34:21knows depression bread was bad that's true that's
- 34:25very true i don't think that is true i don't
- 34:28know if anybody's ever criticized bread during
- 34:30the depression let's assume um okay i felt smart
- 34:37for a minute i was like oh i nailed it oh so
- 34:38we also learned that robbie is been black maybe
- 34:43blacklisted from yeah the bugle um he gets a
- 34:47line on super superpowered people and he's trying
- 34:51to like desperately get talk to the editor -in
- 34:56-chief of the bugle yeah well he's really trying
- 34:59to sell this uh silver main story that he's been
- 35:02working on yeah but he's just that's what he's
- 35:04been pushing he's begging for work at this point
- 35:06um and not really getting any response and when
- 35:12he finally does it he's kind of just thrown under
- 35:15the bus and his name is used to like write that's
- 35:20like three or four that's the end that happens
- 35:23at the end of this episode yeah at the end of
- 35:25two yeah i think so yeah that's when like it
- 35:28comes out that he's just like i didn't write
- 35:29this no no maybe you're right maybe that's later
- 35:32yeah that's not too um but yeah so he he goes
- 35:36to this hotel because he finds out that uh from
- 35:39lani he finds out that addison fireboy uh his
- 35:43wife is a piece of shit and whenever she comes
- 35:46into money she goes and spends it rapidly by
- 35:49living a high society life and then immediately
- 35:53comes back as soon as comes back to the gutter
- 35:55yeah yeah so he goes and confronts her does a
- 35:59good job getting into her apartment you know
- 36:01because she's playing the race card and he manages
- 36:05to outsmart her yeah um and then uno reverses
- 36:09that shit yes he does he does for real so what
- 36:13does he end up learning from her i can't remember
- 36:14exactly so she They know that Addison was hired
- 36:19to try and kill Silvermane. Is that all they
- 36:22get from that? I can't think of anything else.
- 36:26Yeah. So anyway, I mean, what ends up happening
- 36:29next is Silvermane is still trying to get a hold
- 36:33of Ben Reilly. So he goes and has his goons rough
- 36:37up Janet and the office. They smash a bunch of
- 36:40shit. They trash the joint. that's it for janet
- 36:44she's like fuck this i'm out of here yeah i don't
- 36:47want to die not coming back yeah well they do
- 36:50get ben earlier but he gets away and they come
- 36:55back looking for him yeah because they've got
- 36:58him in the car and he's all i love those brothers
- 37:00or whatever god yeah it's one with the toaster
- 37:04i'm doing tai chi yeah they show up in his apartment
- 37:08pull guns at me like does like the cross -armed
- 37:10like web pose but realizes like he doesn't want
- 37:13to give up the ghost so he's like i'm doing tai
- 37:14chi it's good for the circulation um uh but throws
- 37:19a toaster at one of the guy's faces breaking
- 37:21his nose and then the other brother is in the
- 37:24back seat of the car while the one of the broken
- 37:26nose is driving and nick cage goes sorry about
- 37:28your nose like that was him he's like no and
- 37:32he like socks the door rolls out the door i do
- 37:36like that shot of him hanging onto the underside
- 37:38of the bridge just with one hand yeah just kind
- 37:40of dangling dangling um okay so yeah he's gotten
- 37:44away from them they trash the joint we get introduced
- 37:48to like silvermane proper at this point and we
- 37:52kind of find out the crux of his story is silvermane's
- 37:55aging he's getting older and he assumes that
- 38:00there's someone gunning for him because people
- 38:02are coming for the King. Yeah. And he's, you
- 38:04know, trying to prove that he's not too old to
- 38:07like run the show. Um, and his right hand man
- 38:11is like, you know, you got to stay hidden. And
- 38:13he's like, no, cause he's like, nah, if I, you
- 38:16know, like if I hide that just shows weakness.
- 38:19Um, so, but what is it that gets silver main
- 38:23to like actually let the guy go and like scope
- 38:27out before him? Like something happened. Yeah,
- 38:30there was some sort of trigger to it. And I don't
- 38:32remember exactly what it was because he doesn't
- 38:34want to show the weakness. But yeah, he's got
- 38:36his right hand man, Winston. And I don't know.
- 38:39I was thinking maybe that it was Silvermane trying
- 38:41to test Winston a little bit. But I think you're
- 38:44right. I think something spooked him. So he sends
- 38:47Winston in. Also, holy fuck, that guy, the actor,
- 38:50Lucas Haas, I hate his face so fucking much.
- 38:53He's got a real rat face. He's got a real rat
- 38:55face. And he just like, he looks like one of
- 38:57those guys who's super into close -up magic.
- 38:59And I'm like, oh, fuck off. You suck, man. But
- 39:04yeah, so then he ends up, Silvermane's going
- 39:06to go check out this shipment of Canadian booze.
- 39:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. Prohibition's still a thing.
- 39:13Prohibition's still a thing. So Nick Cage decides
- 39:16that he's like, fuck it. It's time to be the
- 39:17spider again. Oh, got to talk about the scene
- 39:20where he gets his spider shit back. Oh, yeah.
- 39:22Oh, yeah. Nick Cage putting on that character
- 39:26work. He he hid his costume and everything in
- 39:30the wall of his old apartment and then just like
- 39:33left back like five years ago. Love the flashback
- 39:37when he does that, because like he just literally
- 39:40like hammers out and tears out a wall and then
- 39:43like. the scene of him like putting the wall
- 39:45back together is him just like taking this chunk
- 39:48of like wood and just kind of like balancing
- 39:51it back into the wall like that i don't know
- 39:54laughing plaster is pretty weird shit man yeah
- 39:56just tuck it back it's fine yeah it's probably
- 40:00good uh but then to get his stuff back he goes
- 40:03in and takes a bunch of takes a toolbox and uh
- 40:06mop from the maintenance office and just like
- 40:09pretends to be the maintenance guy going in uh
- 40:13fixing a leak in a toilet i love that couple
- 40:17that couple's great they show up a few times
- 40:19yeah they show up later too um which i like that
- 40:22feels very comic booky to me it's like these
- 40:25people just keep kind of over you know connecting
- 40:26paths i like at one point they're like is everything
- 40:30okay in there and he's like i'm having an existential
- 40:32crisis having a bit of an existential crisis
- 40:35here about my toilet great line great line there
- 40:41are like there's one scene where we he had the
- 40:46other detective like tail silvermane's guy winston
- 40:50back to silvermane's apartment and then it just
- 40:53hard cuts to like ben reilly like under the floor
- 40:56listening showing up underneath the building
- 40:57yeah i'm just like why did you have the other
- 41:00guy track them if you already knew there's a
- 41:03few like weird cuts where ben just shows up and
- 41:06i'm like that's I don't know. His spider sense
- 41:08was tingling. Oh, also the spider sense thing.
- 41:11It's just like it's not necessarily just danger,
- 41:13just when weird shit's happening. And it seems
- 41:15really inconvenient. Yeah. Yeah. OK, so anyway,
- 41:20Silvermane is on the way to go check out his
- 41:22Canadian whiskey or whatever and gets intercepted.
- 41:26His like three convoy convoy three car convoy
- 41:29gets intercepted by the spider who does a good
- 41:32job dispatching those motherfuckers. Yeah, that's
- 41:34a pretty fun little fight. he still lands poorly
- 41:37a couple times yep so this is where i want to
- 41:42talk about it here but more after episode four
- 41:44is just like so we have the ropey cgi um but
- 41:49we also have like these great scenes of like
- 41:51cool we can't afford to like do a lot of special
- 41:54effects so we're going to do a lot of practical
- 41:56spider -man work and i really like it like after
- 41:5920 years of like rubbery to more convincing like
- 42:05spider antics like we finally have to rely on
- 42:08like stunt people and like proper like old school
- 42:11filmmaking and i'm really digging it yeah well
- 42:15and i mean like the early 2000s spider -man stuff
- 42:18like you know he he actually seemed like sort
- 42:22of normal you know he's superpowered but like
- 42:24he seemed kind of normal the the newer ones he's
- 42:28like got stark powered suits and that kind of
- 42:31shit it's just it's very different this feels
- 42:33like a guy who can just like take a beating and
- 42:37can shoot fucking webs yeah you know also no
- 42:40compunction about people dying he like that first
- 42:43like scene he's just fucking using people as
- 42:48uh human shields um i love the thing where the
- 42:52guy shoots through the roof and he's on the ceiling
- 42:54so he shoots his web through the hole to like
- 42:57careen the car into a wall yeah it's tight as
- 43:00hell yeah but that fight is pretty good it is
- 43:04it's a lot of fun yeah and so then he confronts
- 43:06silvermane it's basically i'm back stop fucking
- 43:09with ben reilly my my good friend who i sound
- 43:12exactly like he's got a voice changer yeah it's
- 43:15not that bugs me because like it seems like there
- 43:18seems like a digital like voice change going
- 43:21on i'm like that's not real yeah i mean there's
- 43:24gotta be or anything like that no but it's also
- 43:33it's so much harder to understand him when he's
- 43:35using it yeah it is it's worse for sure so then
- 43:39it ends you know he goes back to the the office
- 43:42and he's like oh i you know i did a good thing
- 43:44i saved the day um and finds out that this was
- 43:47all like a big sting to try and capture silvermane
- 43:51but because he fucked up his convoy silvermane
- 43:55never showed up they never bust him silvermane
- 43:58is still on the loose yeah end of episode two
- 44:03yeah uh no it's a great i'm really enjoying it
- 44:07so far i think uh episode one and two was a really
- 44:09good way to dip into it i watched those with
- 44:11rachel as standalone and then i watched uh three
- 44:14and four by myself uh the next day so i i think
- 44:18it's it's nicely weaving multiple storylines
- 44:22together there's the intrigues there's all these
- 44:24things who's crisscross double crossing it's
