Transcript
- 0:00OK, everybody. So just a friendly reminder,
- 0:02this is an episode that exists of a part of our phase two
- 0:06curriculum, the revamping around development and integration.
- 0:10So we've already covered things like capacity, we've covered
- 0:14parts work, we've covered attachment, the addictive
- 0:17system. So this episode is going to be a
- 0:19natural next step because it's got to talk about rebuilding
- 0:21that relationship with yourself. All right, let's talk about what
- 0:24that looks like and can we just go?
- 0:27Can you reflect for me for a moment?
- 0:30I'll kind of slow this down. Think about maybe right now that
- 0:35might exist in your life where you're like, how do I trust
- 0:39myself? Like, no, I don't trust myself.
- 0:42I'm so tired of letting myself down, not letting other people
- 0:45down. We're not talking about trust
- 0:46with other people. We're just talking about the
- 0:49trust that exists with you. Do you trust yourself?
- 0:52Do you feel like you're going to follow through on what you say
- 0:53you're going to do? Or are you so frustrated with
- 0:55how you show up? You just like, man, again, like
- 0:59I didn't do it. Or are you proud with where
- 1:00you've come so far? Like you, you like what you're
- 1:04experiencing. You know when you say you're
- 1:05going to do something that you can count on yourself.
- 1:08By the way, this does this conversation does exist with
- 1:10compassion and not perfection, but you know, just this.
- 1:15We're talking about the experience where you promise
- 1:16yourself you'll do something differently and then you don't
- 1:18follow through and that there's an erosion of self trust that
- 1:22happens over years and decades of broken commitments.
- 1:27And it is so devastating to go, I'm going to get it this time
- 1:31and then fall down and go I didn't.
- 1:34And it's the language that matters in the process of
- 1:37falling. So the surface question that we
- 1:40have here is why don't I trust myself even when I want to?
- 1:44That's what we're going to talk about today.
- 1:49Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 1:51I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 1:54in this space today. What we're going to be doing is

- 2:00authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 2:02about a single action or a moment.
- 2:04It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 2:08the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 2:11So whether? This is your first time tuning
- 2:12in or you're a regular listener. Know this, what you're building
- 2:16here goes beyond a. Conversation.
- 2:18You're here to challenge, to change, and to celebrate the
- 2:21incredible journey of becoming your authentic self.
- 2:24Because when you dare to. Show up fully.
- 2:25The rewards are immeasurable. So welcome to Beyond the Facade.
- 2:29Let's get started. Let's talk about what self trust
- 2:33actually means. So self trust is the confidence
- 2:38that your internal system is organized and aligned.
- 2:41There's this gentleman named Russell, and I have him on the
- 2:44podcast. He's a therapist and he talked
- 2:46to me the other day about alignment.
- 2:48Oh my gosh, I value what he was saying.
- 2:50He said alignment. He defined it.
- 2:52He says it's what what I say and what I believe and what I
- 2:57experienced are the same. What I say and what I believe
- 3:02and what I experience are the same.
- 3:04So I say this to you, and I believe this, and I experienced
- 3:10this and are they similar, right?
- 3:16Just recognizing not being aligned, not being a failure.
- 3:19So I don't want to put that today.
- 3:22People are really smart and they can use their intellect to hide
- 3:25behind some things that they're not feeling so.
- 3:29Can you just? Bring a little bit of attention.
- 3:31If you're somebody that over intellectualizes, can you just
- 3:35feel a little bit, as we talked to this content today, what self
- 3:39trust is? Let me tell you what it
- 3:41includes. All right, So following through
- 3:43on your commitments, not perfectly being honest with
- 3:46yourself. I think that's the one I want to
- 3:47just talk about the most. Let's just talk about honesty
- 3:50with yourself. Like do you say the things that
- 3:53maybe you're all comfortable? Do you're accountable to those
- 3:56that you don't hide from your own thoughts?
- 3:59So easy for me to do to hide from my own thoughts.
- 4:02Do you act in alignment with your stated values?
- 4:06A lot of men mistake like confidence for like self trust.
- 4:11Self trust is not bravado or certainty.
- 4:14It's about consistency, not perfection, consistency.
- 4:18And and The thing is, we've had compulsive behavior for years
- 4:22and decades and that's eroded in our self trust.
- 4:27So that secrecy fractures that internal alignments, because
- 4:31again, internal alignment is what I say and what I believe
- 4:36and what I experience are the same.
- 4:39OK. So impaired thinking distorts
- 4:43that reality internally before it distorts it externally.
- 4:46So we have to lie to ourselves. We have to, like, say something
- 4:50different than what we actually do or think something different
- 4:52than what we actually do. And when we say it to ourselves
- 4:59and we break commitments with ourselves, we become internally
- 5:02unstable. And overtime, men begin to
- 5:04distrust themselves. It's like I don't trust myself.
- 5:07Maybe, maybe won't be said, but they don't.
- 5:12They distrust their own impulses, their own emotions,
- 5:15their intentions. I don't know what I feel.
- 5:18Do I actually feel that? Do I know What?
- 5:20Am I resentful? Is that something that I
- 5:22experience? Yeah.
- 5:26So there we call this internal fragmentation and it fuels a lot
- 5:29of shame and self doubt. I'm not going to spend too much
- 5:32on shame and self doubt, but it does have the part to do with
- 5:34this when we go through it in our phase two curriculum.
- 5:36But. We have.
- 5:37Shame versus guilt. So guilt says I did something
- 5:40bad. Shame says I am something wrong.
- 5:43Guilt can motivate repair, right?
- 5:45It can. But what does shame do?
- 5:47It attacks our identity and undermines the growth.
- 5:51And that chronic shame is going to reinforce our core beliefs
- 5:54and it's going to destabilize like some self trust.
- 5:57So a lot of us are oscillating between like grandiosity is what
- 6:01you call it, and self contempt. Like I'm the man and I hate
- 6:05myself rather than like steady accountability with self and
- 6:09others. So what we want to notice if
- 6:11there's this thing between seeking validation and building
- 6:13inner worth. So a lot of men attempt to like,
- 6:16rebuild worth externally. And are you doing that right
- 6:19now? Just reflect on that, think
- 6:20about that. Am I trying to rebuild my sense
- 6:23of worth through my partner's reassurance?
- 6:25Do I need her to tell me what's who I am, what I am, right?
- 6:31Am I doing it through performance or am I doing it
- 6:33like appearing to be the good guy?
- 6:36Because external validation creates like our temporary
- 6:38stability, but we're not. We're still have a ton of
- 6:41internal we're fragile inside and internal works going to
- 6:46develop through that honest self reflection.
- 6:49We're actually am I right, but there's so much fear of
- 6:52consequences if I actually stop back and honestly self reflect
- 6:58and if my behavior aligns with that and I allow myself that I
- 7:03do have strength and I do have flaws.
- 7:05So again, in a worth develops through those things, through
- 7:08being able to look at myself, be honest with myself, right be
- 7:11able to be consistent with my behavior, be accountable without
- 7:17completely collapsing. And I need to find the right
- 7:19places to be accountable. And then realizing that I do
- 7:23have strength and I do have flaws.
- 7:25So that's where that entered work develops from, right?
- 7:27That's how we get it. That's not coming outside of us,
- 7:30that's coming inside of us. And that self trust grows when
- 7:32the behavior aligns with internals values over time.
- 7:36So I just want to come back to this a little bit more and I
- 7:39don't know, maybe it's already sinking in for you, but where
- 7:42does that internal worth come from?
- 7:44If I'm talking about those four pieces that all in self
- 7:47reflection, where is it at for you?
- 7:49Is it like I'm, I can talk about the stuff that is uncomfortable
- 7:53for me. I can be honest and what my
- 7:56feelings, what my emotions are, what my behavior is.
- 7:58I can voice it like I can voice it to myself.
- 8:00I can voice it to others. I am consistent.
- 8:03I can be accountable without collapsing.
- 8:06I can share where I'm actually at and I can recognize that I'm
- 8:13flawed and I do have strengths, right?
- 8:17So that that's going to happen over time.
- 8:20But there's a bunch of lies that we tell ourselves.
- 8:22Impaired thinking doesn't just justify behavior, distort self
- 8:25perception. So that means so much impaired
- 8:30thinking, right? So there's common things that we
- 8:32can tell ourselves with the distorted thinking, the lies
- 8:34that we tell ourselves. I'm fine or that wasn't that big
- 8:38a deal. That's not like inner circle
- 8:39behavior. I'll fix it later.
- 8:41I can push that one off. So if I can be truthful with
- 8:45myself, that's the foundation for integration.
- 8:49So honesty has to begin internally before it can be
- 8:53sustained relationally. So I have to be honest with
- 8:55myself, saying this is where I'm at, getting real with me and
- 9:00talking about that. That's what I have to have
- 9:03inside of me before I can reach out and be relational,
- 9:06especially with an intimate partner.
- 9:08With a romantic partner, I'd be aligned in there first.
- 9:11OK, I want to speak to the betrayed partners because I know
- 9:14a lot of listen here, just give us a talk about the relationship
- 9:17itself and give some validation because I don't know how this is
- 9:20hitting for you today, what this is like to hear.
- 9:23But just want to acknowledge that you can really as a
- 9:25betrayed partner, as a partner who's going through their own
- 9:28healing, you can really sense when your man does not trust
- 9:32himself, OK? And it's man, that inconsistency
- 9:36feels unsafe, even if he's has a bunch of good intentions and
- 9:41that once he learns to self trust, there's going to be some
- 9:45steadiest and other people in his life are going to experience
- 9:49that is reliable. And what does it mean when he
- 9:53trusts himself? What does that feel like that
- 9:56repair that he works on with you and with others?
- 10:00It feels grounded rather than performative like he feels like
- 10:03why is he now that he, if he starts to trust himself, it's
- 10:08coming from a place of him feeling secure in himself
- 10:12instead of just performing to make sure you feel OK with him
- 10:16because he's good with himself outside of whether you accept
- 10:19him or not or whether anything like that.
- 10:21Hopefully that's helpful and not too painful.
- 10:24All of that can be painful if you got a man and he's working
- 10:27as recovery and there's not that self trust, right?
- 10:31If that's not being developed, that's not being worked on.
- 10:34If there's not that truth, you can have all the intentions in
- 10:37the world, but you're not going to get that steadiness and that
- 10:40reliability until he learns to trust himself again And again.
- 10:44That's not bravado. That's not that's not that
- 10:46confidence piece. That's what we were talking
- 10:47about earlier. And that's going to that
- 10:50internal alignment. It's going to proceed relational
- 10:54safety to a certain extent. And it doesn't have to take
- 10:57forever to start to trust again. In fact, you start being a level
- 11:00of, I know when I start show up in my world and I start to
- 11:03follow through when I do and I'm doing for the right reason, it's
- 11:05not performative. I know my partner feels like she
- 11:08can sense that she knows, OK, I can feel a little bit safer
- 11:12because I'm doing it for the reasons that makes sense.
- 11:15OK. So just remember, self trust
- 11:17cannot be built overnight. It's not going to be fast,
- 11:21right? You can start to experience the
- 11:23fruit of it. I don't know if I should say it
- 11:25that way because fruit takes a long time to grow, but you can't
- 11:27experience some. You can breathe a little bit
- 11:29better when you start to show up consistently, but self trust is
- 11:33not built overnight. You can experience some some
- 11:36relief once you start to show up and start to be doing these
- 11:39things, but it's going to take some time because you have to
- 11:42have repeated alignment between that intention and action.
- 11:46And the early stages often feel uncomfortable because there's so
- 11:50much stuff that shifts the reason why you're doing what
- 11:52you're doing. You're honest, right?
- 11:54You're being real with yourself. It's for a different reason.
- 11:58So that shame is going to intensify way before it softens.
- 12:02But just notice that disruption now uneasiness is that's not
- 12:04bad, that's fact, it's really good.
- 12:07And that consistency over time, it's going to be, it's going to
- 12:09be so much more powerful than that emotional intensity or
- 12:13feeling from the lack of self trust.
- 12:15Just again, tying this back into the phase two, phase two,
- 12:18intentionally, we develop self trust, we talk about it, we give
- 12:22structure to it, we give accountability to it.
- 12:24There's a lot of internal work done it.
- 12:26So men are going to be guided to build like inner worth rather
- 12:28than seeking external reassurance that shame
- 12:31resilience is going to be practiced in the real time in
- 12:33these group settings, not just discussed, but actually
- 12:36practice. Let's actually practice it.
- 12:39And our phase two work is going to help men become more
- 12:42internally aligned and reliable. If you're a partner, I get it.
- 12:47They want that. They haven't had that.
- 12:49For those men who are working to go through this, go grab it.
- 12:53And this is where recovery shifts from.
- 12:55Like maybe you're in a state of crisis management.
- 12:58So now you're going to go more to identity transformation.
- 13:00You're really going to start to find these parts of you that
- 13:02have felt lost for a long time. OK, so just to give you a heads
- 13:06up for a next episode, we're going to start talking about
- 13:11naturally destructive behaviors. We're going to talk about some
- 13:14abusive behaviors, some betrayal, violence, some of
- 13:17those types of things. So we're going to be joining you
- 13:19for that. It's a little, it gets a little
- 13:21bit intense, especially when we talk about betrayal, violence
- 13:23and abuse every single time. But it's still truth, and it's
- 13:27still something I want to recognize in myself so I can
- 13:30change patterns that have maybe existed generationally.
- 13:33Anyway, it's good to spend time with you.
- 13:36If you're a man who's trying to show up differently for your
- 13:38partner after betrayal, then listen closely.
