Transcript
- 0:00What's up guys? Welcome back to Adventures and
- 0:02Adversity, an inspirational podcast where we've got, let's
- 0:06see, this will be episode 82. But before this, we had 81
- 0:10stories from incredible people, 55 plus different people from
- 0:15all over the world, from all walks of life, talking about how
- 0:19they have turned adversity into an adventure.
- 0:23They have turned their problems into their purpose.
- 0:26They've turned trauma into triumph in so many ways.
- 0:30So be sure to take a look at all the incredible stories that I'm
- 0:33so grateful to just have on this podcast because each of them has
- 0:39an amazing human being behind it.
- 0:41All right, so episode 82, I want to get right into it.
- 0:45If you clicked on this, you are interested in the vagus nerve,
- 0:49OK, Vagus nerve now, not the Las Vegas nerve.
- 0:53If you, I don't know where you're listening from in the
- 0:55world, we got a lot of countries super stoked about that.
- 0:58But if you are not from the United States and you're not
- 1:00familiar with the Las Vegas, NV, we are not talking about the Las
- 1:05Vegas nerve. We're talking about the Vegas
- 1:08VAGUS nerve. Now, why am I talking about the
- 1:12vagus nerve when we're talking about adventures in adversity
- 1:16and many different stories from many different people?
- 1:18Because the vagus nerve, when activated, write this part down,
- 1:26can help you get through adversity.
- 1:30Yeah, that's it. That's all I have to say.
- 1:32End of episode, click. Just kidding.
- 1:34Now I'm going to tell you how the vagus nerve can help you and
- 1:38me because we all need it. I'm just learning as we go here,
- 1:42get through adversity. OK, So if you've been listening
- 1:45for a while, whether you're new, no, I just said that if you've
- 1:48been listening for a while, you know that we I definitely don't
- 1:52shy away from the topic with all of my guests and talking about
- 1:56like what's going on in your body?
- 1:58What's going on in your mind when you're going through a hard
- 2:00time in life. Now, from what I've learned here
- 2:06in my little research and in my talking to psychologists,
- 2:10talking to people who've been through it, there's this thing
- 2:12called the nervous system. You know, you learn about it in
- 2:17school, but I don't know about you guys, but I didn't quite
- 2:21understand the value of the value, the not value.
- 2:26That's not the right word. The I didn't understand the
- 2:30pivotal role that your nervous system played in pretty much
- 2:33everything you do. And regulating it is literally
- 2:39how you are able to get through adversity, right?
- 2:42Otherwise you're in a constant state of panic.
- 2:45So today we're actually going to talk about what happens to our
- 2:49nervous system when we go through prolonged periods of
- 2:52stress, pressure, all sorts of things.
- 2:55And that pressure can come from all kinds of adverse situations,
- 3:01adversity. Some of those we can control,
- 3:04some we can't, right? So we are going to talk about
- 3:07adversity. We're going to talk about
- 3:09nervous system activation, what that means, what is the vagus
- 3:14nerve, and some very practical tools that we, not just you, but
- 3:19me can use if you're in a tough chapter right now.
- 3:25All right, so looking at my notes here.
- 3:27OK, so first of all, I'm pretty sure if you're listening, you've
- 3:32been through adversity. Maybe you're going through it
- 3:36right now, maybe it's on its way, who knows?
- 3:39But we do know I am a deeply believing Christian and a
- 3:44follower of Christ. And I do know that God does say
- 3:46in the Bible that we definitely will have tribulations.
- 3:50It's not a question of when or if, but it's when knowing that
- 3:55what is actually happening in our body during adversity.
- 3:58OK, so I want to give a shout out real quick to perplexity AI
- 4:03Again, great tool to use if you're just interested in like
- 4:09researching anything. I I love psychology.
- 4:12It helps me prep show notes and it's just great.
- 4:16So anyway, perplexity AI. So here's what's actually
- 4:19happening according to research here, in high stress, high
- 4:22conflict or overwhelming situations, the nervous system
- 4:25is doing exactly what it was designed to do, protect us.
- 4:30OK, so you might recognize some of these states.
- 4:33This is when you're maybe in the midst of adversity, what this
- 4:36might feel like in your body. Fight, flight, freeze or fawn.
- 4:42OK, so feeling angry, this is fight, heat up, ready to argue,
- 4:46all that stuff. Flight, wanting to run, move
- 4:49over, work scroll or avoid. Freeze going blank,
- 4:54dissociating, staring in a space, losing words or fawning
- 4:59over explaining, apologizing people pleasing to stay safe.
- 5:04So I've had like 55 plus maybe even 60 now guests.
- 5:08I think it was a couple months ago.
- 5:10I counted it was 55. The rest are episodes like this
- 5:12where I'm kind of just filling in and I've noticed a lot of the
- 5:18guests and anytime I've shared they describe living in these
- 5:22states. These these states their where
- 5:27their nervous system is on like fight, flight, freeze, fawn and
- 5:30going back and forth for a long time, right?
- 5:36It's almost like no, it's almost like it is.
- 5:38If you've ever been in that situation where you're going
- 5:40through something that's like traumatic, your nervous system,
- 5:45you're in like a freeze response, right?
- 5:48So it's difficult to navigate when you're in it.
- 5:53And one of the things I've learned is you really got to
- 5:57breathe right. And then we're going to get to
- 5:58that with with with the vagus nerve thing.
- 6:00But I drink rest for a second. All right, so here we go.
- 6:06According to research here, I'm going to put in the show notes
- 6:09where this is coming from, what researchers have discovered and
- 6:13what many people find is when you're in that state of like,
- 6:16it's not stay, stay on high alert.
- 6:19You're trying to think your way out of it, right?
- 6:22Like telling yourself it's going to be fine.
- 6:25Apparently you can't can't actually do that, right?
- 6:28So scientists, psychologists have this discovered when you
- 6:32start with the body, breath sensation and movement, they
- 6:37found that they found just enough calm to speak and live
- 6:41from a more grounded place. All right, so what's the lesson
- 6:44there? You actually can't think
- 6:47yourself out of like a fight or flight state when your nervous
- 6:51system is dysregulated. And I actually listened to
- 6:55something yesterday when I was at the gym.
- 6:57And if someone's like, what is your nervous system?
- 6:59Actually, before we get in all this vagus nerve and stuff, we
- 7:01all know we have a nervous system.
- 7:04Well, if you didn't, you know now I didn't.
- 7:07I mean, I knew we had one, but I didn't understand the importance
- 7:09of it until this podcast. Your nervous system is
- 7:13essentially, and I'll link to the book.
- 7:16It's like the vagus nerve reset. I'm listening to this audio book
- 7:19right now. Your nervous system is like your
- 7:22electrical wiring in your body. I heard that yesterday and I was
- 7:26like, I get it. OK, that makes sense.
- 7:28So it's the wiring, right? OK, so now what is the vagus
- 7:34nerve? VAGUS again?
- 7:37Show notes, sources for all of this stuff.
- 7:40I'm saying the vagus nerve is like a highway connecting the
- 7:43brain to many internal organs. Heart, lungs, gut.
- 7:48That's like a big one. Now gut, it plays a major role
- 7:52in the stress response and in helping the body come back down
- 7:55after being activated. So that's from the Cleveland
- 7:58Clinic. I'll link to the source.
- 8:01So when a person or when anyone sees danger, your sympathetic
- 8:07nervous system turns on. That's the fight or flight
- 8:11automatic. Like Bengal, like Saber toothed
- 8:13tiger coming at you, bear coming at you.
- 8:15So parasim, Parasim shoot. Pathetic nervous system turns
- 8:20on. I'm learning here.
- 8:21The fight or flight, when the danger passes, The
- 8:24parasympathetic system, heavily influenced by the vagus nerve,
- 8:31is supposed to help the body rest, digest, and feel connected
- 8:35again. OK, So what does that mean?
- 8:41It means when like things appear in our environment, you have
- 8:47that automatic response. And again, that's the
- 8:51sympathetic nervous system. This is a fight or flight
- 8:54response automatically trying to keep you alive.
- 8:56Like you jump before you even consciously know it because
- 9:00like, your body's keeping you safe, right?
- 9:05It when the danger passes, the vagus nerve is supposed to help
- 9:10the body rest, digest, and feel connected again.
- 9:13OK, so it's that it's the one that connects to all the organs.
- 9:17So you want to calm that vagus nerve in reaction to a stress.
- 9:26What's it called? A stimulus in your environment?
- 9:31You're going to have that parasympathetic, no sympathetic
- 9:34automatic response. Then once you chill, your vagus
- 9:38nerve comes to kind of chill the body out.
- 9:42All right here. According to Chiron clinics, no
- 9:47one is broken for reacting this way.
- 9:49The fight or flight, the body is doing its best with the
- 9:52information it has. So you might notice you could be
- 9:57when you're when you're super stressed, difficulty sleeping,
- 9:59waking up in panic, replaying conversations, feeling numb or
- 10:04feeling completely like cognitive overload.
- 10:07That is like a nervous system stress response.
- 10:11OK, All right. So what I want to talk about in
- 10:14this episode is how do we send our bodies those different
- 10:19signals? Meaning how do we connect and
- 10:22activate the vagus nerve to create a sense of calm in our
- 10:25body that could then help us get through adversity?
- 10:30Cool. All right.
- 10:32So here are a few practices that have been game changers for many
- 10:37people. This is according to Clinical
- 10:39counseling associates link in the show notes, including a few
- 10:43of my guests. I will say this doesn't doesn't
- 10:46replace medical care or anything like that, but it is something
- 10:49you, you should definitely see a therapist, talk to your doctor,
- 10:52but they're things you can do in the moment to calm your nervous
- 10:55system, which is activating your vagus nerve, which then calms
- 11:00your nervous system, which then brings you down from a fight or
- 11:04flight state to chillin. All right, four to six breathing
- 11:094:00 to 6:00. Second breathing with a gentle
- 11:11exhale. So they say inhale gently
- 11:13through your nose for a count of four.
- 11:18Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6.
- 11:26Repeat that for two to three minutes.
- 11:28Oh, that's good. The slightly longer exhale, this
- 11:31is from oxygenadvantage.com can help activate the calming side
- 11:36of the nervous system and support vagal tone.
- 11:39I'm going to get into vagal tone in a second.
- 11:41Actually, I'll just tell you now, vagal tone, I heard in this
- 11:45book, that book that I'm linking linked to below on the the vagus
- 11:49nerve reset. Vagal tone is like how quickly
- 11:54your body can go from a stress state to a calm state.
- 11:59So if you have like a high vagal tone, you can like regulate
- 12:01yourself vagal tone. That is like life goals, right?
- 12:07All right, so the the slightly longer, longer exhale activates
- 12:11the calming side of your nervous system.
- 12:12And again, nervous system. What is that?
- 12:14It's the wiring everywhere. My guests have shared that, you
- 12:19know, before big conversations, before, you know, big events,
- 12:25big meetings, that taking the time to really breathe like
- 12:29this, that helps them prepare. What they're actually doing is
- 12:33they're activating their vagus nerve.
- 12:36So they're getting that sense of calm before something.
- 12:39OK, another thing you can do to calm your vagus nerve and
- 12:42activate it is Orient to the room.
- 12:45So if you start to feel yourself going into fight or flight mode,
- 12:48look around the the room and name 5 things that you can see
- 12:53or touch or hear. So for example, if I was going
- 12:59into fight or flight mode, sitting here right now all of a
- 13:01sudden sort of having a panic, I would say I would start the
- 13:05breathing. Say Gray microphone, white
- 13:08bedspread, bright light bulb, chicken cooking, clean window,
- 13:16dirty window. Like I'm just bringing my body
- 13:19back into this moment instead of like anything you're creating in
- 13:23your head. Vocal and facial exercises can
- 13:28stimulate the vagus nerve. OK, It's the vagus nerve
- 13:32actually runs through your whole like up and down through your
- 13:36body and then it touches all of the organs.
- 13:39So in now it's a part of the wiring that is maybe the central
- 13:43wiring that's connected. So when it's activated, it then
- 13:47sends calm into all your organs. All right, so it's the vagus
- 13:52nerve is like, amazing because the vagus nerve, this is from
- 13:55UVA Health, reaches the vocal cords and muscles in the face
- 13:59and throat. Simple vocal practices can
- 14:02stimulate it. Hum a song you love for a minute
- 14:04or two. Wow.
- 14:12OK, so that one read something out loud in a calm, steady
- 14:15voice. That's what I'm doing right now
- 14:18with this research. So I'm activating my vagus
- 14:22nerve. Soften your jaw, unclench your
- 14:25teeth and drop your shoulders. OK, what else here?
- 14:31Setting micro bound boundaries with yourself.
- 14:36So in high stress seasons it's tempting to binge watch shows.
- 14:41Refresh your notifications 400 times a day, right, A nervous
- 14:46system boundary for you to kind of act like activate the vagus
- 14:50nerve and keep it calm. Maybe not scrolling about like
- 14:55devastating topics right before you go to bed, maybe going for a
- 14:59walk and doing for the the four to six second breathing, right.
- 15:06It's really amazing how you, when you like prioritize calming
- 15:10your body down and like actually doing these things that your
- 15:13whole life changes. OK, all right, so I, I'm
- 15:21rambling here. Vagus nerve goes up and down
- 15:25through your whole body, connects to your brain, your
- 15:28different organs. It's the central wiring when you
- 15:32do things like exercising, breathing.
- 15:35Actually, let's see what the top ten ways, top ten ways to
- 15:40activate vagus nerve and you guys get to just hear me talk
- 15:44about it. If you don't want to, you know,
- 15:46look it up yourself, but if you do perplexity AI go for it.
- 15:49All right, I'm going to talk about this and put this
- 15:54information I'm learning in the context of what I've learned in,
- 15:57you know, 81 episodes. So I'll kind of talk about these
- 16:02top 10 vagus nerve activators and then any episodes that come
- 16:05to mind where that maybe that's been mentioned.
- 16:07All right, so the number one top 10 vagus nerve activators,
- 16:12remember the central wiring that then calms your organs.
- 16:16Deep, slow breathing from cedarssinaihospital.com down in
- 16:21LA, Diaphragmatic, diaphragmatic breathing with a slightly longer
- 16:26exhale. So shorter inhale, longer exhale
- 16:30can increase parasympathetic activity and vagal tone.
- 16:34What's a vagal tone? Your ability to go from a
- 16:38dysregulated state to a regulated state.
- 16:43Cold exposure. I did a episode oop, my
- 16:47daughter's calling. Hold on.
- 16:51Hi, how's it going? Are you invited or is she
- 17:02invited? OK, Only if you say please and
- 17:06thank you and be the very good manners.
- 17:13No, Reese. How if you've been invited for
- 17:19dinner, you may stay. Is that authorized by parents?
- 17:32No. How about 7:00?
- 17:38They're negotiating 740. All right, I'm recording a
- 17:43podcast episode literally right now.
- 17:48Wait, Hold on. OK.
- 17:50Love you. Bye.
- 17:55Well, welcome to life. OK.
- 17:56That was my daughter. She's staying in a friend's
- 17:58house for dinner and till a little bit.
- 18:00OK, cold exposure. I did an episode on like life is
- 18:04like an ice, a cold plunge. So apparently brief cold
- 18:07showers, splashing cold water on your face or holding a cold pack
- 18:10to your neck or face can stimulate the Las Vegas nerve.
- 18:15Just kidding. Vegas via the dive reflex slows
- 18:19your heart rate. Cool.
- 18:21We talked about the humming and the chanting or the singing.
- 18:24So literally, if you're like having an anxiety attack, just
- 18:26like start humming. Who knew?
- 18:29That's why you do ohm like ohm, you know, gargling.
- 18:33Vigorous gargling with water, according to charliehealth.com,
- 18:37creates throat vibration that can engage vagal pathways and is
- 18:41suggested as a simple daily exercise.
- 18:44This is amazing moderate exercise and yoga support vagal
- 18:50tone, help rebalance stress and rest responses.
- 18:54So it's like it's almost like yoga and prayer.
- 18:58Can't prayer. That is the ultimate vagus nerve
- 19:01activator. I'll probably end with that.
- 19:04It's almost like you're like just caring for your vagus nerve
- 19:08and like activating it to remind it that you're safe.
- 19:13Massage gentle massagers. Neck, shoulders, feet or
- 19:18reflexology can support vagus nerve activity and lower blood
- 19:21pressure. Huh.
- 19:25This is a good one. Activate the vagus nerve.
- 19:30Laughter and social connection. Positive social engagement, eye
- 19:33contact, genuine laughter are linked with healthier vagal tone
- 19:40and related research on social engagement systems.
- 19:43Body shaking shout Short bouts of body shaking or bouncing can
- 19:48help discharge tension and are used in vagus nerve exercise
- 19:52protocols for chronic stress and pain, according to
- 19:55soundsurrey.com. Listen, that's all I got guys.
- 20:00Daughter called. We got to pick her up soon.
- 20:04I'm getting this published tonight.
- 20:05Sending this over to Julio, my amazing producer Jack London.
- 20:11And again, guys, we all got a vagus nerve.
- 20:14Let's just you know what happens in the vagus nerve doesn't have
- 20:22to stay in Vegas. No, I, I don't understand
- 20:24anyway, the, the vagus nerve is important and you should
- 20:29activate it. And the best way you know, I'm
- 20:33going to come in with this adventures in adversity is very,
- 20:35very honored and empowered by my faith in Jesus.
- 20:41And he is. I think anytime you pray, Jesus
- 20:47can definitely work on your nervous system.
- 20:52I mean, come on. That's just like he can rewire
- 20:57everything and that's what he's doing for me.
- 21:01All right, I'm going to wrap this up.
- 21:02It's Sunday, episode 82 and take care of yourself.
- 21:11Tell your authentic stories, use your voice, and activate the
- 21:17vagus nerve. Peace.
