- 0:12day. And here's the kicker, Up to 80%
- 0:16of people with Parkinson's notice their diet directly
- 0:19impacts their symptoms or their medication.
- 0:22So today we're going to get real about food, the food that helps,
- 0:26the food that's hinders, and some strategies to make meals
- 0:29less stressful and more effective.
- 0:32And stick with me until the very end, because I've got a braces
- 0:35about food and Parkinson's that will make you laugh while you
- 0:38nod in agreement. Welcome to Living with
- 0:42Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:46Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 0:51Let's begin. Hey, I'm Bryce.
- 0:54I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 40 and I've been
- 0:57living with living with it for 15 years.
- 0:59And this is living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 1:01and the reality. If you're new here, hit that
- 1:03subscribe button now because we talk about the real side of
- 1:06Parkinson's, the stuff that nobody else does.
- 1:10So why does diet matter with Parkinson's?
- 1:13Well, Parkinson's doesn't just affect movement.
- 1:17It slows digestion, it changes how your meds are absorbed, and
- 1:21it messes with your energy. If your gut is slow, your meds
- 1:25can be slow. If your meals are off, you can
- 1:27feel stiff, foggy, or completely drained.
- 1:30I learned this the hard way. I once had a big steak dinner,
- 1:34took my levodopa right after, and then spent the evening
- 1:37wondering why nothing was working.
- 1:40Turns out my meal basically cancelled out my meds.
- 1:44And that's when I realized, food isn't just food with
- 1:46Parkinson's, it's part of the treatment plan.
- 1:49And honestly, I couldn't even blame the meds that night.
- 1:52After that much steak, I didn't feel like working either.
- 1:55So let's break this down, starting with the foods that
- 1:58help. Number one, fiber.
- 2:01Rich foods. Fiber is your friend.
- 2:03Oatmeal, beans, lentils, whole grains, fruits, vegetables.
- 2:07One person in the community told me that their secret weapon is
- 2:10oatmeal with flaxseed and blueberries every single
- 2:13morning. They said it keeps me regular,
- 2:15it gives me steady energy instead of a crash.
- 2:18And that, to me, is a win, win #2 Omega threes.
- 2:23These healthy fats are in salmon, walnuts and flax.
- 2:27They're good for your brain, and they may help with inflammation.
- 2:30One viewer. One viewer swears by eating fish
- 2:32twice a week. They told me I noticed less
- 2:35brain fog when I'm stick to it. Now, I can't prove that, but
- 2:39when you're living with Parkinson's, any edge is worth
- 2:42exploring. How about #3 antioxidants?
- 2:45Parkinson's is linked to oxidative stress, so eating
- 2:48colourful foods can help. Berries, spinach, kale, red
- 2:51Peppers. A friend of mine calls it eating
- 2:53the rainbow. If your plate looks colourful,
- 2:56then you're probably feeding your body something that it can
- 2:59use. OK #4 is hydration.
- 3:02Now this one sounds simple, but it's huge.
- 3:04Dehydration makes stiffness, fatigue and Constipation worse.
- 3:09One of you told me that you start every morning with a warm
- 3:11glass of lemon water. You called it your morning
- 3:14flush. And honestly, I love that.
- 3:17Personally, I just call it plumbing maintenance.
- 3:20Now let's switch gears because just as some foods help, others
- 3:25can get in the way. And #1 and you know, this is
- 3:27high protein. Protein itself is not the enemy
- 3:30is essential. The tricky part though, is that
- 3:32protein and levodopa compete for the absorption, absorption in
- 3:35the gut. That means sometimes if you eat
- 3:38a high protein meal and take your meds at the same time, you
- 3:41might feel like your dose just doesn't ever kick in.
- 3:44Here's the thing though. I don't live by a strict protein
- 3:47timing schedule. Life's already complicated
- 3:50enough for me with Parkinson's. So for me, if I know I'm about
- 3:54to have a big protein heavy meal, I'll just adjust my
- 3:56levodopa a little bit. Sometimes I take a bit more
- 3:58before I eat, or sometimes a little bit after, depending on
- 4:01where it lands in my day. And that's what works for me.
- 4:05But here's the bigger picture. It's not about following some
- 4:08perfect rule book. It's about paying attention to
- 4:11your body, noticing patterns, and then adjusting.
- 4:15Because what throws one off, what throws off one person
- 4:17completely might not even bother someone else.
- 4:20And that's that's the thought I want to leave with you in this
- 4:23section. Food and meds aren't the
- 4:25enemies. It's just about learning the
- 4:27rhythm that works for you. Now, I'm not the only one.
- 4:31One of you told me that you had your meds right after a Big
- 4:34Breakfast of eggs and bacon and it felt like they never kicked
- 4:37in until hours later. And that's when you realize it's
- 4:40not the meds that stop working, it's the timing with the food
- 4:44that makes all the difference #2 processed foods and sugar.
- 4:49While we all know they're not great, they're yummy, but not
- 4:51great. But with Parkinson's, the impact
- 4:53can be harsher. Sugar gives you a spike and then
- 4:56crashes you hard. So if you're already fighting
- 4:58fatigue, that crash could feel like someone pulled the plug on
- 5:01your whole body. One person told me that they had
- 5:04cake at a birthday party and then spent the next hour feeling
- 5:07like their batteries had died. One minute you're celebrating,
- 5:11the next you're on a balloon with all like feel like a
- 5:13balloon with all the air let out.
- 5:15Sugar isn't evil. Let's just say it's just not.
- 5:17A loyal friend #3 would be excess dairy.
- 5:21This doesn't apply to everyone, but for many, dairy makes
- 5:24Constipation worse. And when you're already dealing
- 5:27with that, you don't need the extra challenge, do you?
- 5:30So here's the question, how do you make your diet work for you
- 5:34without feeling like you have to give up everything you enjoy?
- 5:37That's where strategy comes in. And here's the tips.
- 5:41Tip #1 is meal timing. I already shared my approach.
- 5:44If you if I know I'm going to eat a big protein meal, I adjust
- 5:47my meds around it. But some people prefer the
- 5:49standard device, which is spacing protein and levodopa
- 5:52apart. The point is, notice that what
- 5:55works for your, but notice what works for your body and build
- 5:57around that. And then that leads to #2 which
- 5:59is meal planning. On good days, prep simple
- 6:02healthy meals so you don't have to think about them on bad days.
- 6:05Some of the community told me that they batch cook a big pot
- 6:08of veggie soup, freeze it in single portions.
- 6:10Now that's smart. It saves energy.
- 6:12It keeps you out of the processed food trap too.
- 6:16Tip #3 would be eating out. If I know my meds are due, I'll
- 6:20order something light like soup or salad instead of something
- 6:22heavy. And then I plan ahead so that
- 6:25I'm not stuck deciding between my meds and my meal if I have
- 6:28to. And one of you told me that you
- 6:30even bring snacks with you just in case.
- 6:32And that's smart planning. It's planning ahead.
- 6:34Tip #4 is grocery shopping. And here's a simple rule.
- 6:38Shop the perimeter. That's where the fresh stuff
- 6:41lives, Produce, meat, dairy. The middle aisles are where all
- 6:45the processed junk hides. And someone in the comments said
- 6:47I treat the middle aisles like a minefield.
- 6:50I don't even go down them. And that one made me laugh, but
- 6:53it was really brilliant. And Speaking of community,
- 6:56you've shared some great tips. Smoothie with spinach, berries,
- 6:59almond milk and flax. Quick, easy and Parkinson
- 7:03friendly recipes. And another favorite one, never
- 7:05favorite. Someone said if the plate looks
- 7:07beige, I know I'm in trouble. And the right beige usually
- 7:11means bread, pasta, fries. Delicious, yes.
- 7:13Helpful for Parkinson's? Not so much.
- 7:16My taste buds cheer, but the rest of me stages A protest.
- 7:19It's up to you. You pick the day.
- 7:22Now let's zoom out. Because diet isn't just about
- 7:24nutrients. It's about dignity, confidence,
- 7:26and connection. I know people who skip dinner
- 7:29parties because they're worried about Med timing.
- 7:32Others avoid restaurants because they they feel embarrassed about
- 7:35slow eating. And that isolation can sometimes
- 7:39hurt more than the disease itself.
- 7:42And that's why we talk about this stuff.
- 7:44Because food is family, food is joy, food is connection.
- 7:47And yes, food is strategy. And that brings me to today's
- 7:51Price ISM. With Parkinson's, food isn't
- 7:54just fuel, it's strategy. The trick is knowing which
- 7:57battles are worth fighting on the plate so you don't lose the
- 8:00war in your body. So now it's your turn.
- 8:05What's 1 food swap rest for your tip that's helped you manage
