Transcript
- 0:00Well, hello, and welcome to the Modern Ian podcast.
- 0:05I'm your host, Kimberly Roberts of Sulfian, and I am so glad
- 0:08you're here. I want to take a moment to help
- 0:11you understand what this space is all about, especially if
- 0:15you're new here, and how this podcast can support you.
- 0:20This podcast is really geared for busy women, especially over
- 0:25the age of 40, who feel like they're constantly on the go,
- 0:29taking care of everything and everyone.
- 0:32But you know what? Not taking care of themselves.
- 0:36And over time, that can start to look like feeling burnt out,
- 0:40overwhelmed, tense, tired, but wired or just disconnected.
- 0:47What I share here is a different approach.
- 0:51Instead of pushing harder or doing more, we focus on slowing
- 0:56down, supporting your nervous system, and creating a sense of
- 1:00safety in your body. Because here's the thing, when
- 1:05your body feels safe, everything starts to shift.
- 1:09Your energy improves, your mind becomes clear, your body
- 1:13softens, and you will begin to feel more like yourself again.
- 1:19Inside this podcast, you'll find simple practices using in yoga,
- 1:23acupressure, reflexology, breath work, mindfulness.
- 1:28These are all designed to fit into what I call real life, even
- 1:33when you only have a couple of minutes.
- 1:36And if you're looking for more support, you can come and join
- 1:39me inside my Patreon. That's where I share full yen,
- 1:43yoga classes, guided practices for emotional support, nervous
- 1:47system resets, and even nourishing recipes to support
- 1:51your overall well-being. It's really a space where you
- 1:56can go deeper, at your own pace and in a way that feels
- 2:00supportive, not overwhelming. So whether you're listening
- 2:05while walking, resting, or just taking a moment for yourself,
- 2:10I'm so glad you're here because you've landed in the right
- 2:12place. Take a deep breath, let those
- 2:16shoulders soften, and let's begin.
- 2:19So let's talk about why yin yoga and acupressure are the perfect
- 2:24pair for nervous system regulation.
- 2:27That's the jam that I want to talk about in today's episode.
- 2:33So there's a reason some practices feel deeper than
- 2:36others. It's not just because they're
- 2:38relaxing or not just because you're stretching, but it's
- 2:43because you're regulating. And two of the most powerful
- 2:47tools I've worked with over the years are yin yoga and
- 2:50acupressure. On their own, they're really
- 2:54effective, but together they create something so different.
- 3:01They speak to the nervous system directly, and if you've never
- 3:06experienced acupressure before, I highly recommend you try my
- 3:11free Calm Anxiety practice on my Patreon site.
- 3:17It's linked right up in my start guide section.
- 3:21It's a 10 minute practice and it'll give you an idea of what
- 3:26acupressure is, how it works, and then it'll also help you
- 3:29calm and regulate and ground your nervous system, and it'll
- 3:37also give you an idea of why it works so well.
- 3:45So let me know in the comments section if you go ahead and
- 3:50practice that acupressure practice because I'd love to
- 3:55know. You can even comment on my
- 3:56Patreon page right in the video itself.
- 4:01So I'd love to know what you think about acupressure.
- 4:04OK, so let's talk about the missing piece that's in
- 4:08regulation, OK? Because I'll tell you there's a
- 4:12lot of noise out there about nervous system regulation.
- 4:16Most people honestly think it's about calming down.
- 4:20It's about breathing slower, managing stress.
- 4:24But honestly, regulation is really about safety in the body.
- 4:30And safety isn't created through thinking, it's created through
- 4:34sensation through the body. And this is where many
- 4:39approaches fall short because they stay in the mind.
- 4:43And you know what? I'm going to be honest with you.
- 4:45I used to think that too, until I really started playing with
- 4:51yin yoga and acupressure together.
- 4:53And let me tell you how much that shifted because I could
- 4:58literally feel it in my nervous system.
- 5:01Again, if you haven't done my free acupressure practice on my
- 5:05Patreon, you've got to go and check it out.
- 5:09OK? I'm also going to link the
- 5:12practice in the show notes here, so it'll be super easy for you
- 5:15to find it. OK, so most of us, you know, we
- 5:20know what yin yoga does. It's working slowly.
- 5:26It's long holds. It's minimal effort.
- 5:29Time in the stillness. And what does that signal to the
- 5:34nervous system? You're safe enough to soften
- 5:39forcefully. No.
- 5:41Gradually. Yes.
- 5:43Tissues begin to release. Your breath deepens.
- 5:47Your body stops bracing. But Yin alone opens the door.
- 5:53OK, I want to say that again. Yin alone opens the door.
- 6:00Now let's talk about what acupressure adds to the mix.
- 6:04OK, so acupressure brings precision.
- 6:11Now, it works along meridians, or we also call them energetic
- 6:15pathways that are connected to organs and emotional patterns.
- 6:20And when you stimulate specific points, you're not just relaxing
- 6:25muscle here, you're influencing the nervous system, emotional
- 6:30regulation, energy flow in the body.
- 6:35It's like giving the body a clear signal.
- 6:37Hey, you know what? It's OK.
- 6:40You can release here. Why yin blended with acupressure
- 6:48works so well. I want to talk about that next.
- 6:53OK, Yin creates space, but acupressure is what directs the
- 7:01release. So yen is opening, acupressure
- 7:07is guiding. So think of it like instead of
- 7:11just lying in a pose, you're supporting the body in releasing
- 7:16stored tension, moving stagnant energy, regulating the nervous
- 7:22system more efficiently. This is why people often feel,
- 7:28and honestly, they often tell me many times when I do acupressure
- 7:33with yen in your practices on your Patreon site, I feel
- 7:38calmer, clear, lighter, especially when I've combined
- 7:44the two together. Like one of my clients, she only
- 7:49looks for practices on my Patreon that blend the two.
- 7:55Now, I'm not saying yen alone isn't effective, absolutely is.
- 7:59So is acupressure alone. But I'm just saying that the two
- 8:02together, it's kind of like the peanut butter and the Jelly in
- 8:07the sandwich. And then you layer on top of
- 8:10that some banana slices, you know, or it's like the sprinkles
- 8:14on the sundae. It's like, boom, it is perfect.
- 8:21So if you've been in my world for a while, you've heard me
- 8:26talk about the modern yin approach.
- 8:29OK, this is the foundation of modern yin.
- 8:34It's not just about doing yin poses.
- 8:38It's not just about pressing points.
- 8:43It's about understanding how to work with your body gently,
- 8:48consistently, and in a way that build regulation over time.
- 8:56OK, because here's the thing, your nervous system didn't get
- 9:00into a state of dysregulation overnight.
- 9:04That took time. So it takes time to reverse all
- 9:09of that. And this is exactly what we
- 9:12explore inside my work, inside my Patreon, where yin and
- 9:18acupressure come together in a simple, supportive way.
- 9:21Not overwhelming, just downright effective.
- 9:26And I'll tell you, if you've done acupuncture, you know that
- 9:30that's done with a needle, right?
- 9:31They put a needle in a specific point along the energy pathway
- 9:36or along a Meridian channel. And I love acupuncture.
- 9:41Don't get me wrong. I love it.
- 9:42I engage in it, I do it. But for most people, let's face
- 9:47it, you're not a regulated acupuncture therapist, so you
- 9:51can't get needles. And if it even if you did, you
- 9:55know what? If you don't put the needle in
- 9:57the right spot, you're going to create a lot of damage in your
- 10:01body. With acupressure, you eliminate
- 10:05all of that. Because here's the thing with
- 10:09acupressure, you're using the pressure of your fingers.
- 10:12And in my classes I always guide you to use at least two fingers
- 10:17so that you know that you're actually on the point and you
- 10:21don't have to worry about it. It really is simple.
- 10:25And I will tell you that when you start incorporating
- 10:28acupressure with your yin poses, sometimes I will teach it in a
- 10:34way where we do the acupressure first, then yin pose is second.
- 10:38Sometimes depending on the pose we're in and depending on the
- 10:43point I want to stimulate, we actually do it together.
- 10:47So in a yin pose, stimulating an acupressure point is one way
- 10:51better than the other. Absolutely not just different.
- 10:54That's all. So I want to tie in again,
- 10:59regulation, because honestly, it doesn't come from doing more.
- 11:09It comes from doing the right things in the right way at the
- 11:13right pace. And this is modern yin.
- 11:16This is where stillness, honestly, it does the real work.
- 11:25So again, if you haven't tried my free acupressure practice and
- 11:29you're new to acupressure or you're someone who has a lot of
- 11:33challenges with anxiety, please, please give my practice a shot,
- 11:40OK? At the beginning of the
- 11:42practice, I actually talk a little bit about acupressure and
- 11:45how it works and how that specific point works.
- 11:48Then we get into the practice itself.
- 11:51Then we finish off with a little bit of a grounding meditation
- 11:56where you get to actually feel what it's like to calm anxiety
- 12:03in your body, in your mind, and in your nervous system.
- 12:10Today's episode supported you in any way.
- 12:14The next best step is to come practice with me.
- 12:17Inside my Patreon, I share simple yin yoga, acupressure,
- 12:22reflexology, and nervous system practices designed for busy
- 12:26women who want to feel calm, rounded, and back in their
- 12:30bodies without needing a ton of time.
- 12:34You'll also find full classes, guided practices, and even
- 12:38nourishing recipes to support your well-being.
- 12:42Until next time, take a deep breath, slow things down, and
- 12:46take care of you and I'll see you in the next episode.
- 12:51Thanks so much for pressing play today.
