- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whaltbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money.
- 0:36Speaker 2: She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the pod
- 1:00Speaker 4: that makes personal finance fun, especially on Fridays. It's our
- 1:04Speaker 4: favorite day of the week because we get the team
- 1:06Speaker 4: together to celebrate you the incredible She's on the Money community.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I'm actually not Victoria Divine, don't know if you up.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm Jessica Riggy.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I'm taking the reins because Miss Victoria sounds a little
- 1:18Speaker 4: bit like this.
- 1:18Speaker 5: It sounds a little bit demonic, and we.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Love that from you.
- 1:23Speaker 5: So'm here like physically but mostly spiritually.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, yeap.
- 1:29Speaker 4: So if you hear a little a little scratching in
- 1:31Speaker 4: the background.
- 1:34Speaker 5: I still wanted to be involved, Like, you can't keep me.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Away from this. No, Unfortunately, have you guys been trying.
- 1:42Speaker 4: So today I'm going to share my favorite Moneys that's
- 1:44Speaker 4: gonna share her best broke tips. We're going to be
- 1:46Speaker 4: answering a money dilemma, which this week is all about
- 1:49Speaker 4: wanting to help your parents boost their super so they
- 1:52Speaker 4: have enough money for retirement, as well as something that
- 1:55Speaker 4: you slid into our dms about this week, we're chatting
- 1:57Speaker 4: what do you do when you're trying to save money
- 2:00Speaker 4: on bills and your housemate is cranking the heater wearing
- 2:03Speaker 4: a T shirt like it summer.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Don't look at me like that? Why no? I I
- 2:09Speaker 2: like it sounds like me. That's exactly what I heard.
- 2:11Speaker 2: She was gonna say.
- 2:12Speaker 5: It's Yess, said Chess. I swear jess as heaters set
- 2:16Speaker 5: at twenty six every single time, and she's like on
- 2:19Speaker 5: zoom in a singlet. I'm like, yeah, no, soon if
- 2:23Speaker 5: we want to live, like, put some socks on.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 2:26Speaker 4: How's everybody's weeks been there before we get into it?
- 2:29Speaker 5: I'm good girl, no, like I've just lost my voice,
- 2:35Speaker 5: like I've yapped too close to the sun, Like this
- 2:37Speaker 5: is what happens when I bite off more than I
- 2:40Speaker 5: can talk. When I do too many like public speaking things,
- 2:44Speaker 5: I feel like my vocal cords just get exhausted. And
- 2:47Speaker 5: then they say no more, and then I say good
- 2:50Speaker 5: try and then I still come to what I want.
- 2:53Speaker 5: It's so cool, Thank you, thank you. I like sexy
- 2:56Speaker 5: rough Ye, I don't feel cool. Oh sorry, I feel
- 3:00Speaker 5: frustrated because there's just so much cool stuff that I
- 3:03Speaker 5: want to do right now, Like how do you record
- 3:06Speaker 5: a dice in air wrap video when you can't do
- 3:08Speaker 5: a voiceover? And then that's the question of it all
- 3:11Speaker 5: is I'm like, guys, look at my hair today, is
- 3:13Speaker 5: so voluminous.
- 3:14Speaker 2: It looks beautiful, beautiful.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Shame.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I did still put a little video on the internet.
- 3:21Speaker 5: But I couldn't be like, oh, this is how I
- 3:23Speaker 5: did it because I sounded demonic.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 3:27Speaker 5: That's the most first world problem you ever run into.
- 3:30Speaker 5: But also best week ever. Beck we all know has
- 3:34Speaker 5: a side hustle of creating clay creations. She has made
- 3:38Speaker 5: me a baby ravioli. It's like a spoon rest, but
- 3:43Speaker 5: mine's pink and it has red like accents on it,
- 3:45Speaker 5: and it says divine and it has these little cherries
- 3:48Speaker 5: on it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I have never seen something more me.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I I feel so thought of, Like it's just so beautiful.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:59Speaker 6: I feel really bad because Jess came in and gave
- 4:01Speaker 6: me a jellycat keyring and I said, thanks Jess. Anyway, here, Victoria,
- 4:04Speaker 6: here's my gift.
- 4:05Speaker 4: What I did to Victoria giving you a gift.
- 4:11Speaker 5: That it's not like, oh, if I'm giving just a gift,
- 4:13Speaker 5: I have to give beck a gift. It's just like
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm giving you one because I thought of you specifically
- 4:18Speaker 5: in this moment, like it happens in ebbs and flows.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think that's the best part about it.
- 4:22Speaker 7: True.
- 4:22Speaker 2: You know, I do think of you both equally.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Thank you, thank you.
- 4:26Speaker 6: One of you has a gift that was your.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Week, really good week.
- 4:30Speaker 6: I was in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, and
- 4:33Speaker 6: so I think I just like, when I come back
- 4:34Speaker 6: from Sydney, I'm like, I'm so grateful for the life
- 4:38Speaker 6: I have in Melbourne, you know. So I've just been
- 4:41Speaker 6: riding a high. Really, I don't think it much. Too
- 4:43Speaker 6: much has been going on just living, love and laughing
- 4:46Speaker 6: as always and what about you?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Nothing crazy. I've been on a Marvel rewatch. So I
- 4:52Speaker 4: went on very interesting Thunderbolts a couple of weeks ago
- 4:55Speaker 4: when it released, which was very exciting. We got invited
- 4:57Speaker 4: to the previews, so it's so cool to be out
- 5:00Speaker 4: with me. They had someone stand at the front. They're like,
- 5:02Speaker 4: you're some of the first people in the world to
- 5:03Speaker 4: see this movie, and I was like, that is so cool,
- 5:07Speaker 4: and it was great. I feel like there was a
- 5:09Speaker 4: bit of a lull. I think anyone who's a big
- 5:11Speaker 4: Marvel fanmily agree. There was like a soft period, feels.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Like we're coming out of it.
- 5:16Speaker 4: And so after watching that movie, I was like, oh,
- 5:17Speaker 4: I want to go and rewatch everything in chronological order
- 5:21Speaker 4: because it feels like they're starting to tie a lot
- 5:23Speaker 4: of things together and there's so many to watch.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So it's that's all I'm doing. I wouldn't have picked
- 5:28Speaker 2: you for a Marvel girl.
- 5:30Speaker 4: A lot of people say that my favorite film genre
- 5:32Speaker 4: is like an action adventure.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Really, yeah, don't love a rom com? Would you believe?
- 5:38Speaker 2: I would not believe.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I do not believe. I think she's to us.
- 5:44Speaker 2: That's I don't get what she says. I don't believe. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think action is well for me.
- 5:52Speaker 6: I find it so boring because I'm like, there, just
- 5:54Speaker 6: there's a lot of sound.
- 5:55Speaker 5: I know what's gonna happen. True, I's going to prevail, exactly,
- 6:00Speaker 5: we already know what's going to happen.
- 6:02Speaker 6: I want to know.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I respect your where I can predict who's going to
- 6:05Speaker 5: fall in love. Yes, yeah, I prefer that kind of predictability. Yes,
- 6:10Speaker 5: you also went to that with an ulterior motive. You
- 6:13Speaker 5: were like, I'm super excited about this, but also it's
- 6:15Speaker 5: being hosted by Disney.
- 6:16Speaker 2: It's socredible.
- 6:17Speaker 5: What were you trying to do while you're there?
- 6:19Speaker 2: I was trying to meet some people, connect some things.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Disney cruise.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Perhaps I'm really on this time, Like she's on the cruise.
- 6:27Speaker 4: It's got to be a way to make it happen. Sadly,
- 6:29Speaker 4: it turns out it was me in about five thousand
- 6:31Speaker 4: of my closest friends at this event, see, which was
- 6:33Speaker 4: still an absolute That's okay.
- 6:35Speaker 5: We can then get a Disney cruise.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We're going to figure out a way to make it happen.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Do you imagine back on a Disney cruise I think
- 6:41Speaker 2: you'd have the best time.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I think you were leaning in the way that I
- 6:44Speaker 4: would need somebody to yes, yes, yes, absolutely.
- 6:48Speaker 5: I feel like you have to lean in, Like you
- 6:50Speaker 5: can't go on a Disney cruise and not do all
- 6:53Speaker 5: the activities and go like Disney Bingo and do all
- 6:56Speaker 5: of the things like I want to eat all of
- 6:58Speaker 5: the Mickey shaped everything.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like there could be in. I think
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm in.
- 7:03Speaker 7: I'm in.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It has a idea, but I'm in. Leave it with me.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But do you guys like to hear it? Speaking of
- 7:07Speaker 2: wonderful things, this week's five star reviews.
- 7:10Speaker 5: You get to read these, but no one wants to
- 7:12Speaker 5: hear it.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Well, I'm taking much joy in doing it myself, just
- 7:16Speaker 4: so you know, to really rub the soul in the wound.
- 7:19Speaker 4: This week's review is from Tyler, and she said to
- 7:22Speaker 4: that she's on the Money Girls team listeners and everyone.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I started listening about eight months ago, and it truly
- 7:28Speaker 4: has changed my life. I am now completely dead free,
- 7:32Speaker 4: And even though it sounds like a bad situation, I
- 7:34Speaker 4: got myself to be financially stable enough that I got
- 7:37Speaker 4: to resign from my incredibly toxic job this week without
- 7:40Speaker 4: feeling stressed or anxious on how I could afford things
- 7:42Speaker 4: until I get a new job. She said, she's now
- 7:44Speaker 4: going to be testing sight hustle tips. Not only is
- 7:47Speaker 4: it helping me financially, but you've also taught me things
- 7:49Speaker 4: that have helped put me in a situation that improves
- 7:52Speaker 4: my mental health.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Again, the biggest thank you from the bottom of my house.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's so good.
- 7:56Speaker 5: It always feel so special that you guys take the time.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't have to, but you do. That's really nice.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I'm so happy.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And it's likely to get an update on your life
- 8:05Speaker 4: and what you're doing. And yeah, manifesting the perfect job
- 8:08Speaker 4: pops up for you.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Tyler.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yes, I'm not to hear it all about me, but
- 8:12Speaker 2: do you want to hear some money wins?
- 8:14Speaker 5: I do.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I should have thought this through a I'll speed get
- 8:18Speaker 4: through it. You probably sick me first one this week.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I've got this from Jamie, who went to two inspections
- 8:23Speaker 4: for interstate buyers over the weekend. She got one hundred
- 8:25Speaker 4: and twenty dollars for each one just to walk through
- 8:27Speaker 4: the house, snap a few photos and that was it.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Bucks for about thirty minutes of work on a Saturday morning.
- 8:33Speaker 2: She said, Oh my god, that's so good.
- 8:35Speaker 4: And for anyone wondering. Beck commented and said not our Beck.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Different Beck commented and said how did you do this?
- 8:41Speaker 4: And Jamie said it was air tasker. So good little
- 8:44Speaker 4: anybody out there, I have a little wonder on your
- 8:46Speaker 4: Saturday morning.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I love a property perv. Yeah, through, I'm not get
- 8:50Speaker 2: paid for it. Absolutely.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Next, I've got the money win from Olivia, who said
- 8:53Speaker 4: her partner bought her a coffee machine as an early
- 8:56Speaker 4: Mother's Day present, so she hasn't brought herself a coffee
- 8:58Speaker 4: in two weeks and she's saving five dollars and ten
- 9:01Speaker 4: cents per day.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's so good. How are you are
- 9:03Speaker 2: with your coffee? You're doing still going? Absolutely, I have not.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Literally the early days I buy coffee is when I'm
- 9:09Speaker 6: here and I've run out of time in the morning
- 9:10Speaker 6: and so I must buy coffee. But every other day
- 9:13Speaker 6: I do not buy coffee. And I actually prefer you
- 9:16Speaker 6: get to a point, we prefer the taste of the
- 9:18Speaker 6: coffee that you make the.
- 9:19Speaker 4: French press, the French little French press. Yes, absolutely incredible. Next,
- 9:24Speaker 4: I've got money in from Joe, who said she has
- 9:26Speaker 4: solar and hasn't had a bill in about a year.
- 9:29Speaker 4: She's actually getting credits back from you see company each month.
- 9:33Speaker 2: She said.
- 9:34Speaker 4: The other day they were mail to check for the
- 9:35Speaker 4: majority of the credit amount and they still have credit
- 9:38Speaker 4: to apply to the next bill.
- 9:40Speaker 5: He got a check. Yeah, you make a legitimate cash
- 9:43Speaker 5: from selling your energy.
- 9:45Speaker 2: You're going to pay me.
- 9:46Speaker 5: The energy cofee is coming to you.
- 9:49Speaker 2: God, that is so cool. I love solar so good.
- 9:52Speaker 6: Why did she have energy?
- 9:55Speaker 5: She didn't use all the stuff that she made.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I think she produced a sur plus, and I
- 10:00Speaker 4: believe I see put back into the grid somewhow.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I'm smarter pers God.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Yeah, so they, I guess pay her for the energy
- 10:08Speaker 4: that she generated for them.
- 10:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Whi's pretty cool. That's so cool. You go renewable energy.
- 10:12Speaker 2: You love to see it. I love to see it.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Next, I've got money in from Shelby, who said she
- 10:16Speaker 4: booked her son's birthday party at a PLAE center a
- 10:18Speaker 4: few weeks back for this weekend.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It's just passed.
- 10:21Speaker 4: When she arrived to pay the remaining on her invoice,
- 10:24Speaker 4: she was told that there was a ninety nine dollar
- 10:26Speaker 4: party special running at the time that she booked it.
- 10:28Speaker 4: She had no idea and saved herself a tidy two
- 10:30Speaker 4: hundred and twenty dollars.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Oh my god, Oh that's a lot.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I was thinking, that's a heap to spend on a
- 10:36Speaker 4: kid's birthday, kids party's expense.
- 10:38Speaker 2: I don't know what the going rate is. Is that normal?
- 10:40Speaker 5: I mean, I'm not at the point where Harvey is
- 10:42Speaker 5: being invited, but yeah, I'm like my nieces and nephews, like,
- 10:46Speaker 5: it can really add up. I mean, if you want
- 10:48Speaker 5: to go to a play center, what's that like twenty
- 10:49Speaker 5: bucks ahead.
- 10:50Speaker 2: That's actually so Truel's.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Like a dude, Like, even if it's party pies, the
- 10:54Speaker 5: second you tell the center that you want them to cater,
- 10:57Speaker 5: what's that going to cost?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:59Speaker 5: Yeah right, that soorry. I just yeah, it will definitely
- 11:02Speaker 5: add up. And then then there's like their wedding conversation,
- 11:05Speaker 5: do you pay for all the kids coming to your
- 11:08Speaker 5: kid's birthday or do the kids pay?
- 11:10Speaker 2: Like truly you pay?
- 11:11Speaker 5: Well, See that's what I thought that I've seen in
- 11:13Speaker 5: our community, people talking about, oh, I've had my kid
- 11:17Speaker 5: go to these birthday parties and it cost X and
- 11:19Speaker 5: I'm just like wow, okay, like I'm not prepared for
- 11:23Speaker 5: this at all.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Harvey's too young to have little friends half parties.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Interesting.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Well, then ninety nine dollars sounds like an absolute bargain.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Well done, Shelby. And lastly, this week, money in from
- 11:36Speaker 4: Claire who said, I want one hundred and fifty dollar
- 11:38Speaker 4: about chat for giving a review for a new product
- 11:40Speaker 4: I bought, and.
- 11:41Speaker 2: So then I bought myself some extra new goodies. Goteous.
- 11:43Speaker 2: That's exciting. I love it for yourself. Yeah, one hundred.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I love when people win those late random free giveaways.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So fun, so fun.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Sorry, I just realized. I was like, this is completely irrelevant.
- 11:53Speaker 6: But I've developed like almost like a scalely part of
- 11:57Speaker 6: my forehead and it's in the exactly.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Into a Liz.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 5: I don't know what's coming.
- 12:01Speaker 2: But it's also in the.
- 12:02Speaker 6: Same position where like, because I'm Bangladeshi, it's it looks
- 12:05Speaker 6: like I've got a bit cool. Yeah, and so I
- 12:09Speaker 6: but it's and so I'm trying to kill it.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, but it's not x mars.
- 12:13Speaker 6: So anyway, if anyone has any ideas of what kind
- 12:15Speaker 6: of why has scales my symptoms, but you just I
- 12:22Speaker 6: just really need a diagnosis.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Actually into a blue tongue.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Very strang is happening on my forehead.
- 12:28Speaker 7: And.
- 12:30Speaker 6: You got some broke tips. I do have a breast
- 12:32Speaker 6: scale lea forehead, Yes I do. Uh okay, So this
- 12:35Speaker 6: best one comes from Pippot, who is referring to I
- 12:38Speaker 6: found this in our community, and Pippot is referring to
- 12:41Speaker 6: another thing that she saw, So I'm not I know
- 12:43Speaker 6: that the credit isn't all on Pippot, but I just
- 12:45Speaker 6: want to say that she's the one that alerted me
- 12:48Speaker 6: to this. So she said, I have to thank someone
- 12:50Speaker 6: In a previous post about community places to yoga for free,
- 12:54Speaker 6: I just signed up for four sessions this past week.
- 12:56Speaker 6: This compares to signing up for a class that can
- 12:58Speaker 6: cost me a minimum of dollars per session. And so
- 13:03Speaker 6: I don't know where the original information came from. But
- 13:05Speaker 6: all I want to say is I did not know
- 13:06Speaker 6: that was a thing community yoga classes.
- 13:08Speaker 5: I didn't either.
- 13:09Speaker 2: It's really cute. That is so cute.
- 13:11Speaker 6: So it's like I mean exercise classes these days, my
- 13:14Speaker 6: partner pays like, I don't know, fifty bucks a week
- 13:16Speaker 6: for Upstate or something, and.
- 13:19Speaker 9: There's more so she doesn't know what Upstate is what
- 13:23Speaker 9: it is, but like fifty bucks is I'm you know,
- 13:27Speaker 9: I'm being really, you know, not generous, the opposite of generous,
- 13:30Speaker 9: because it's probably way more than fifty dollars.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And we can get a little fact check. Hold on, Zara,
- 13:34Speaker 5: how much does Upstate cost per week? It's fifty fifty
- 13:38Speaker 5: five days job.
- 13:39Speaker 2: But there you go.
- 13:40Speaker 6: So instead of that, and I'm sure you know yogur is,
- 13:44Speaker 6: I no, never haven't really done it, but it mightn't
- 13:46Speaker 6: be on the lesser end of like something that's really
- 13:48Speaker 6: physically demanding, but you'd.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Be still surarized.
- 13:50Speaker 4: It takes a lot of strength, like yeah, okay, it's
- 13:53Speaker 4: similar to pilarates in that they'll usually give you variations, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 4: depending on how advanced you are. But I so when
- 13:59Speaker 4: I was younger, I we're to yogis year and it
- 14:01Speaker 4: is crazy how much like strength people have, right Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 14:06Speaker 4: everything holding your body weight.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Oh my god, that's so true. Sorry, I take that,
- 14:09Speaker 6: I take that all back. Actually that it is intense.
- 14:12Speaker 6: The second one comes from Emily, who says that if
- 14:14Speaker 6: you're on long term medication, ensure your doctor writes you
- 14:17Speaker 6: scripts for sixty days since the scheme. Sorry, this is
- 14:24Speaker 6: helpful in saving two hundred dollars to three hundred dollars
- 14:26Speaker 6: every month. I'm assuming that is because I had the
- 14:29Speaker 6: same thing, Like I would go to my doctor every
- 14:31Speaker 6: twenty days to get a i mean prescriptions, and well
- 14:37Speaker 6: that was just at the very start. And now she's written, like,
- 14:39Speaker 6: you know, just six months plus. Yeah, that has helped,
- 14:42Speaker 6: because it's what is it, like eighty bucks after Medicare
- 14:46Speaker 6: rebate pocket out of pocket, and.
- 14:49Speaker 2: So I think it's just a fantastic idea.
- 14:51Speaker 6: If you have the option, if your doctor is willing
- 14:54Speaker 6: try and get six months plus worth of prescriptions practical.
- 14:58Speaker 2: That's a good one. Thank you, yes, and thank you
- 15:01Speaker 2: too much, Emily.
- 15:02Speaker 5: I didn't know people didn't do that by default, like
- 15:06Speaker 5: in the nicest possible way. I have a brilliant doctor,
- 15:08Speaker 5: and he always gives me like a script for six
- 15:10Speaker 5: months of my like anti anxiety medication, yes, and so
- 15:14Speaker 5: like he checks in with me every six months and
- 15:16Speaker 5: then I get a new script and it's all good
- 15:18Speaker 5: to go.
- 15:19Speaker 2: True.
- 15:19Speaker 5: But you know, maybe people don't get it as often
- 15:23Speaker 5: as I do, Like it makes sense like asking for
- 15:26Speaker 5: more on your script if it's non coincident, like it's
- 15:28Speaker 5: of no you know.
- 15:30Speaker 6: Issue, yes totally and I guess like sometimes doctors want
- 15:33Speaker 6: to see you after with.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Dex like absolutely like what Beck's talking about. She mentioned
- 15:39Speaker 5: dex amphetamine, which is a very restricted drug that can
- 15:42Speaker 5: be prescribed to you if you have ADHD yes and
- 15:46Speaker 5: when you first go on to ADHD medication, they like
- 15:49Speaker 5: manage it really closely, so you might not have the
- 15:51Speaker 5: ability to you know, ask for a longer script until
- 15:54Speaker 5: they call it trust you with the medication or true
- 15:57Speaker 5: work out that it works with your body. But like,
- 15:59Speaker 5: definitely ask what's the worst? They can say no, sorry, yeah,
- 16:03Speaker 5: no that's very true.
- 16:04Speaker 2: So yeah, I'd say, yeah, just ask the question anyway
- 16:07Speaker 2: and see how you go.
- 16:09Speaker 6: This next one comes from myself and also our producer,
- 16:13Speaker 6: who are alerted me that Grilled is actually doing mad
- 16:18Speaker 6: Wait Bad Wait mad bundays.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Does that make any sense to you? This came up
- 16:24Speaker 4: in the slack recently. Georgia loves this.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yes, it's a real tongue twister. Is that intentionally?
- 16:32Speaker 7: So?
- 16:33Speaker 2: How it works this is through Grilled.
- 16:35Speaker 6: How it works is you sign up, you pick your
- 16:37Speaker 6: Aussie rules team or your UGI league team. I just
- 16:39Speaker 6: did it before. I don't think you pick one of each.
- 16:43Speaker 6: I did try. There could be a way, but I
- 16:45Speaker 6: haven't found it. And then if that team wins a match,
- 16:49Speaker 6: you get a free burger coupon send to your email
- 16:52Speaker 6: and relish account, which is what they call the grilled account.
- 16:55Speaker 6: You can dine in on Monday, spend tween doors and
- 16:57Speaker 6: redeem your free burger at the till, and then bask
- 17:00Speaker 6: in the glory. Brag to your mates. Is step number five.
- 17:03Speaker 6: Step number five is non negotiable. And that's me for
- 17:05Speaker 6: this week.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I love that because grilled burgers are so expensive.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And they're so yummy.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Yah're so good, but like twenty dollars for a burger
- 17:13Speaker 5: at what feels like a fast food place. Like, don't
- 17:15Speaker 5: get me wrong, I know that it's like quality and
- 17:17Speaker 5: not McDonald's whatever, it's still expensive.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It's expensive.
- 17:21Speaker 4: And you got a one in two chance, right, like
- 17:22Speaker 4: you're picking a keay deal. It's good odds even if
- 17:25Speaker 4: you don't follow.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Do you know what, have a date night every week
- 17:28Speaker 5: with your partner and both vote again, my god, that's
- 17:32Speaker 5: a good deal. So you and just get an account
- 17:34Speaker 5: pick and she goes one way, you go the other way.
- 17:37Speaker 2: That you can.
- 17:38Speaker 6: You can only pick one at the start unless you
- 17:41Speaker 6: make multiple accounts, which is also an option.
- 17:44Speaker 5: So I mean, Grill's not paying us, so do whatever
- 17:46Speaker 5: you want.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And on that lovely notes, yes, if you pay me,
- 17:53Speaker 2: I will do better. Victoria can be bought with a grill. Absolutely.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Let's go really quick break. We can chatburgers while we're there.
- 18:02Speaker 4: When we come back, we're going to be talking all
- 18:05Speaker 4: about how to help your parents boost their supers that
- 18:07Speaker 4: they have enough for retirement, and whether or not you
- 18:10Speaker 4: should be cranking the heater when you're living with a housemate.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Don't go anywhere.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Welcome back, everyone, and here's this week's money dilemma.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 18:24Speaker 3: can't solve that. She's on the Money team is here
- 18:26Speaker 3: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 18:29Speaker 3: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 18:32Speaker 3: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 18:35Speaker 3: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 18:38Speaker 3: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 18:40Speaker 3: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 18:44Speaker 8: She's on the Money. I have the money dilemma. Not
- 18:47Speaker 8: directly for myself, but it actually relates to my parents
- 18:50Speaker 8: and their retirement. I mean thinking a lot recently about
- 18:54Speaker 8: how their retirement is coming up soon, maybe in the
- 18:57Speaker 8: next decade. My done is sixty, my mom is fifty eight,
- 19:03Speaker 8: and selfishly, in the cost of the being crisis, I
- 19:07Speaker 8: don't really want to be in a position where I
- 19:08Speaker 8: would need to support them financially while also supporting myself.
- 19:14Speaker 8: For context, our family moved to Australia about seventeen years ago,
- 19:19Speaker 8: so my parents just haven't really had very much time
- 19:22Speaker 8: in the workforce in Australia while receiving SUPER contributions, and
- 19:28Speaker 8: I'm just sort of looking for some tips on how
- 19:33Speaker 8: they can prepare for their retire and in other ways
- 19:37Speaker 8: or boost the SUPER or anything like that. My mom
- 19:41Speaker 8: has been mostly stayed at home mom, so she really
- 19:44Speaker 8: has very minimal SUPER and I don't know exactly how
- 19:47Speaker 8: much my dad has, but I know that when they've
- 19:50Speaker 8: looked into using those SUPER to purchase a house, it
- 19:53Speaker 8: wasn't even enough for a house deposit.
- 19:55Speaker 5: So yeah, I'd really.
- 19:56Speaker 8: Appreciate any thoughts, insight, or any tips for how they
- 20:00Speaker 8: can start preparing for their retirement.
- 20:02Speaker 5: I have a lot to say about their pension system
- 20:06Speaker 5: here in Australia. But before that, Beck, what would you do?
- 20:11Speaker 5: I totally know this anxiety.
- 20:12Speaker 6: I feel very much the same with my mum Selfishly,
- 20:17Speaker 6: I don't think she has a lot of super and
- 20:18Speaker 6: so I'm like, I just think I know that in
- 20:20Speaker 6: some cultures it just kind of like expected that you
- 20:23Speaker 6: kind of like help support your parents when they can't
- 20:26Speaker 6: support themselves anymore when they retire. There's a lot of
- 20:28Speaker 6: pressure in this day and age, Like I mean, I
- 20:33Speaker 6: can't even afford myself and like to you know, it's
- 20:36Speaker 6: a lot of pressure to put it on someone.
- 20:38Speaker 2: So I totally get the anxiety.
- 20:41Speaker 6: I guess I would discuss what their plans are after
- 20:46Speaker 6: retirement and if they're if they're like, we're all good,
- 20:48Speaker 6: like we have this much in super, we will get
- 20:51Speaker 6: the pension well whatever else, then maybe like you.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Can take a load off.
- 20:55Speaker 6: But if they're like, oh, we kind of expected that
- 20:58Speaker 6: you would help us out, then my only advice is
- 21:02Speaker 6: panic and that's it. But no, I think that, like,
- 21:05Speaker 6: I don't think it's ever too late, but you could
- 21:06Speaker 6: maybe sign them up for like community housing if it's
- 21:09Speaker 6: an option or something like that. So it's a you know,
- 21:12Speaker 6: have an ongoing cost of you know, living, whether it's mortgage,
- 21:16Speaker 6: whether it's renting or something like that. Like that's just
- 21:18Speaker 6: a really nice security blanket because it can be quite
- 21:21Speaker 6: a long waitlist. So if they have that there, that
- 21:24Speaker 6: would be good. I don't really know what the living
- 21:26Speaker 6: situation's like, so sorry, if you've already sorted that out, Yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 6: I think I think just like chat with them about
- 21:31Speaker 6: what their plans won't be and kind of stress them, like,
- 21:35Speaker 6: this is very could be a scary time financially if
- 21:39Speaker 6: they don't have a plan in place.
- 21:41Speaker 2: That's my advice. I hope that's kind of helpful. Jess,
- 21:44Speaker 2: what are you thinking.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I think it's probably best to ask them about their
- 21:47Speaker 4: financial situation holistically, because just because they don't have money
- 21:50Speaker 4: in super doesn't mean that they maybe don't have cash
- 21:53Speaker 4: assets or some kind of investment. I know that that.
- 21:56Speaker 4: You know often when young families, I great, that may
- 22:00Speaker 4: not be the case, but you don't know. If that's
- 22:02Speaker 4: not a conversation you've ever had, maybe they are holding
- 22:05Speaker 4: something that you're not aware of. Although the comment that
- 22:08Speaker 4: our listener made about them considering pulling money out of
- 22:11Speaker 4: Super for a house deposit and it not being enough
- 22:13Speaker 4: for that suggests to me that maybe you know it
- 22:17Speaker 4: won't be the case, but you never know. Good to
- 22:19Speaker 4: just take a look at the bigger picture where possible,
- 22:22Speaker 4: I would say to echo you back, it's really hard,
- 22:25Speaker 4: I think as a child to take that responsibility on,
- 22:28Speaker 4: and it's okay to have conflicting emotions. I don't think
- 22:31Speaker 4: that it's selfish. I think it's very understandable that you
- 22:34Speaker 4: feel the way that you do, and it's hard to
- 22:36Speaker 4: have to take on this responsibility that you didn't ask for.
- 22:40Speaker 4: It's kind of like the reverse, like a parent chooses
- 22:42Speaker 4: to have a child, but a child doesn't choose to
- 22:44Speaker 4: be born, and so then to have that responsibility, yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 4: when you had no say in it, it can probably
- 22:49Speaker 4: bring up I think a lot of emotions, and that's
- 22:51Speaker 4: completely understandable. Something to consider if you are going to
- 22:56Speaker 4: be in a position, or if you have already purchased
- 22:58Speaker 4: a property yourself, you could look at building like a
- 23:01Speaker 4: granny flat or a tiny home on your property. Because
- 23:04Speaker 4: I think I don't know a lot, vd's going to
- 23:07Speaker 4: know a lot more than I do about our pension system.
- 23:09Speaker 4: But from what I understand, it's really set up with
- 23:12Speaker 4: the assumption that people will own their own property by
- 23:15Speaker 4: the age of retirement, which as we know now is generally,
- 23:18Speaker 4: you know, not always the case. So I feel like
- 23:21Speaker 4: housing is probably one of firstly the biggest expenses that
- 23:24Speaker 4: they will incur as retirees and probably one of the
- 23:26Speaker 4: biggest stresses. So even if it's not permanent, you know,
- 23:30Speaker 4: an affordable tiny home granny flat option, if that's something
- 23:34Speaker 4: you can put onto a property that you either have
- 23:36Speaker 4: now or my purchase in the future, could be kind
- 23:38Speaker 4: of a middle ground potentially, like it's you're not necessarily
- 23:41Speaker 4: contributing to them financially, but you're easing their burden in
- 23:45Speaker 4: a way, if that makes sense.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Is that why it's called a granny flat.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Yeah, because people would often put them on their property
- 23:51Speaker 4: for like granny parents.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yeah, for grannie exactly. That's cute.
- 23:55Speaker 4: And you can buy lots of different like there's all
- 23:57Speaker 4: kinds now you can buy, like tiny homes that are
- 23:59Speaker 4: pre assembled and containers and also so maybe looking into
- 24:02Speaker 4: something like that.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Otherwise I don't have a lot of information, so I'm
- 24:06Speaker 2: just gonna handfall that right over to the financial expert.
- 24:10Speaker 5: So I have limited voice, and I do apologize that
- 24:13Speaker 5: this is a husky version, but you actually have a
- 24:16Speaker 5: lot of control. You have a lot of ability to
- 24:19Speaker 5: help them. Because you've said, you know, they're immigrated seventeen
- 24:22Speaker 5: years ago. I'm assuming they don't fully comprehend like the
- 24:26Speaker 5: Australian pension system. So that's where your knowledge and skill
- 24:30Speaker 5: could come into it. No, it's not going to require
- 24:34Speaker 5: you putting your cash on the table, but it might
- 24:37Speaker 5: require you sitting down with your parents and helping them.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Create a plan.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Right, so you said that they were I would say
- 24:42Speaker 5: relatively young, like they're not, you know, in their late
- 24:45Speaker 5: sixties when you can access a pension, so today they can't.
- 24:48Speaker 5: They would have to be at their what's called like
- 24:52Speaker 5: a qualification age basically, which is where you hit a
- 24:55Speaker 5: particular age to be able to access the age pension.
- 24:58Speaker 5: They have a number of years before they get to that,
- 25:01Speaker 5: at which point I would assume that the plan is
- 25:04Speaker 5: not to buy property. And the reason I would say
- 25:07Speaker 5: it's not to buy property is because of the amount
- 25:09Speaker 5: that would be required to purchase that property and then.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Also pay off that property, et cetera.
- 25:15Speaker 5: They might or you might find they're in a better
- 25:18Speaker 5: situation to make a plan for the next five even
- 25:22Speaker 5: ten years to aggressively contribute to their superannuation so that
- 25:27Speaker 5: they can draw down on that. In addition to the
- 25:31Speaker 5: age care pension, which given you've told me they don't
- 25:34Speaker 5: have a lot of assets and I've made the assumption
- 25:35Speaker 5: that they don't own their house, is potentially going to
- 25:39Speaker 5: look like as following. Right, So the age care pension
- 25:43Speaker 5: gives a maximum, and there's like different levels of what
- 25:46Speaker 5: they're going to look at and not look at. For
- 25:49Speaker 5: single people, it gives a maximum of eleven hundred and
- 25:52Speaker 5: fifty one dollars and thirty cents a fortnite or twenty
- 25:55Speaker 5: seven thousand dollars a year, or for a couple, it
- 25:58Speaker 5: gives you fifteen hundred and eighty five dollars a fortnight,
- 26:02Speaker 5: which is about forty one two hundred and ten dollars
- 26:05Speaker 5: a year. Right, you might look at that and go great,
- 26:07Speaker 5: like that's within the amount that they need to live,
- 26:12Speaker 5: like they could definitely live on that, or you might go, oh,
- 26:15Speaker 5: that's not going to be super comfortable, at which point
- 26:18Speaker 5: that's where their superranuation comes in. And I know that
- 26:21Speaker 5: you're saying that their superannuation isn't heaps, but it doesn't
- 26:25Speaker 5: need to be. And like I think a lot of
- 26:27Speaker 5: people assume because you know she's on the money. It's
- 26:30Speaker 5: all about creating wealth and creating financial stability. And I
- 26:33Speaker 5: am so privileged to have this financial literacy at a
- 26:36Speaker 5: young age that I do want to retire a millionaire.
- 26:39Speaker 5: I'd be disappointed if I had this knowledge and this
- 26:41Speaker 5: aggressive nature to save and invest right now at this age,
- 26:45Speaker 5: if I didn't make the most of that and then
- 26:47Speaker 5: retire comfortably. The same for you, Jess, Like, I know
- 26:50Speaker 5: you want to retire well, and I know you will
- 26:52Speaker 5: because you've started so young and you had time on
- 26:54Speaker 5: your side right now. Your parents don't. But I don't
- 26:57Speaker 5: want you to stress over that, because what happens with
- 27:00Speaker 5: your super is we're going to load as much into
- 27:02Speaker 5: it as possible, and then every year we can draw
- 27:05Speaker 5: down on that, so the money stays invested and on average,
- 27:08Speaker 5: you were expecting a rate of return of about five
- 27:10Speaker 5: percent on that money. But then you might take out
- 27:14Speaker 5: a couple of thousand dollars to make life more comfortable.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Some years you might go no, we're not going to
- 27:18Speaker 5: go on a holiday, or no, we're not going to
- 27:19Speaker 5: do this or that, and that forty one thousand dollars
- 27:23Speaker 5: might just keep the lights on and life tracking along.
- 27:26Speaker 5: But if you want to have a sixty thousand dollar income,
- 27:29Speaker 5: you might take twenty thousand dollars a year from your
- 27:32Speaker 5: superannuation to quote top up what your pension is. And
- 27:36Speaker 5: the pension actually allows for that, like you're not going
- 27:39Speaker 5: to be reprimanded, and that money is tax free once
- 27:42Speaker 5: it's gone into pension phase. So I think that that's
- 27:46Speaker 5: really important. There are a number of different types of pensions,
- 27:50Speaker 5: so I would be going onto the moneysmart dot gov
- 27:52Speaker 5: dot AU website and understanding exactly what they might be
- 27:56Speaker 5: able to access. But then on top of that, there
- 27:59Speaker 5: are heaps of the things that you could set your
- 28:01Speaker 5: parents up with. So get a concession card so that
- 28:04Speaker 5: they get cheaper utility bills, cheaper medical bills. You know,
- 28:07Speaker 5: they get bulk build when they need to, they get discounted,
- 28:10Speaker 5: if not free public transport. In some states, you have
- 28:13Speaker 5: to be over the age of sixty. Your dad actually
- 28:16Speaker 5: ticks that box right now, so he could have those
- 28:18Speaker 5: benefits right now. You need to also potentially look at
- 28:22Speaker 5: I would say a Senior's card. So a Senior's card
- 28:25Speaker 5: is a really cool thing. It gives you again discounts
- 28:28Speaker 5: on public transport or like some goods and services. You
- 28:31Speaker 5: might see it at the checkout of some like cafes
- 28:33Speaker 5: and stuff. They do a little Senior's discount to make
- 28:35Speaker 5: life a little bit more affordable.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Don't I can gives you free cinnamon donuts.
- 28:39Speaker 5: There you go, And I just think cinnamon donuts are
- 28:43Speaker 5: going to change your life. But like, having these cards
- 28:46Speaker 5: and knowing the benefits of them is going to increase
- 28:49Speaker 5: your quality of life. Like if your parents are going
- 28:52Speaker 5: far out, we're going to retire, both of us are
- 28:55Speaker 5: currently working full time, or we have you know, more
- 28:56Speaker 5: than one hundred thousand dollars coming into our household right now,
- 29:00Speaker 5: going to forty one thousand dollars a year.
- 29:02Speaker 2: That's hard.
- 29:03Speaker 5: So what can we do to support that to go?
- 29:05Speaker 2: All?
- 29:06Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:06Speaker 5: Well, you love a coffee and you love a donut, Like,
- 29:08Speaker 5: here are a few benefits that could maintain that type
- 29:11Speaker 5: of lifestyle so that the two of them can still
- 29:14Speaker 5: go out and have those little dates or have the
- 29:15Speaker 5: nice sweet treats that they definitely deserve but maybe can't
- 29:19Speaker 5: fit in the.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Budget as easily.
- 29:21Speaker 5: Now there is going to be different eligibility criteria depending
- 29:25Speaker 5: on your state and territory, so you need to look
- 29:27Speaker 5: into that. I wish I could be like this is
- 29:28Speaker 5: exactly what it is. And then there's the Commonwealth Senior's
- 29:32Speaker 5: Healthcare cart So get them in all of that, like
- 29:36Speaker 5: sign them up for all the benefits. Go talk to
- 29:39Speaker 5: center Link, go work out what that looks like. The
- 29:42Speaker 5: other thing I would say is when parents get a
- 29:45Speaker 5: little bit older, sometimes they aren't well. And if that
- 29:50Speaker 5: is the case, there's often more pressure on one person
- 29:54Speaker 5: in that relationship, like your mum might be caring for
- 29:57Speaker 5: your dad. In that case, talk to send about care
- 30:00Speaker 5: is pay Is there an ability to have you know
- 30:03Speaker 5: that be documented by a doctor to get an additional
- 30:07Speaker 5: subsidy or an additional benefit for looking after that person,
- 30:12Speaker 5: which you know what, if it is accessible and available
- 30:14Speaker 5: to you, please just sign up for it, like it
- 30:17Speaker 5: is there for you. We live in this country which
- 30:19Speaker 5: is so beautiful, and this is why I pay my taxes.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I want my tax money to go
- 30:23Speaker 2: to it.
- 30:23Speaker 5: This is what I want my tax money to go towards.
- 30:25Speaker 5: This is why I'm so passionate about feeling privileged about
- 30:29Speaker 5: paying tax, and I know that so many people could
- 30:31Speaker 5: be like, oh it goes to the doll blood as
- 30:32Speaker 5: it does. I don't care about those people. There is
- 30:34Speaker 5: always going to be an individual in any system trying
- 30:38Speaker 5: to take advantage of it. But you're telling me that
- 30:40Speaker 5: my tax dollars go to making sure that we have healthcare,
- 30:43Speaker 5: that we have roads that are safe to drive on,
- 30:45Speaker 5: and that your parents can retire. Pop off.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I love that for us.
- 30:50Speaker 5: So you can actually do a lot about retirement planning
- 30:55Speaker 5: and you can actually sit down and go okay, cool,
- 30:57Speaker 5: like this is a bit overwhelming, but the money smart
- 30:59Speaker 5: webs is so straightforward, like yes, the process might be hard,
- 31:04Speaker 5: but like start talking to your parents now, like go
- 31:07Speaker 5: okay cool, Like we need to have a look at
- 31:09Speaker 5: your retirement plan because one thing, so for those of you,
- 31:15Speaker 5: you know, playing along at home, when you do the
- 31:17Speaker 5: aged care pension and you're trying to sign up for this,
- 31:20Speaker 5: there's going to be an.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Aged care eligibility.
- 31:23Speaker 5: And I'm going to do a whole episode on this
- 31:25Speaker 5: because I think it's really important. But in Australia, to
- 31:28Speaker 5: get the full pension, you cannot have assets of more
- 31:31Speaker 5: than four hundred and seventy thousand dollars. So let's say
- 31:35Speaker 5: your parents have five hundred thousand dollars in stuperanuation between
- 31:40Speaker 5: them and you want to get the full pension. Your
- 31:43Speaker 5: family home is not being taken into consideration potentially, And
- 31:47Speaker 5: I'm not saying that this is the perfect advice, but
- 31:50Speaker 5: I have seen people do it before and it has
- 31:52Speaker 5: worked for them. And you know, there's I'm going to
- 31:54Speaker 5: do a whole episode, so I can, you know, do
- 31:56Speaker 5: heaps of scenarios for you. I have seen people take
- 31:59Speaker 5: thirty thousand dollars from their super invested in upgrading their home.
- 32:02Speaker 5: They might get a new bathroom or you know, an
- 32:04Speaker 5: updated kitchen. They now fall below the eligibility for a
- 32:08Speaker 5: full pension, they can get their full pension instead of
- 32:11Speaker 5: a part pension. Yeah, and they get something out of
- 32:14Speaker 5: that that they actually probably wanted. But they were, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 5: squirreling away all of their money because they were like,
- 32:20Speaker 5: we'll need as much as possible, and which is true.
- 32:22Speaker 5: But then maybe they've got that. And we're just using
- 32:25Speaker 5: this as an example because I know lots of people
- 32:27Speaker 5: are not retiring with four hundred and seventy thousand dollars
- 32:29Speaker 5: in superannuation, but then they've got that four seventy that
- 32:33Speaker 5: is not going to last them their entire life. But
- 32:36Speaker 5: they might every year take another twenty thousand dollars out
- 32:39Speaker 5: of their super and then have their pension of forty
- 32:42Speaker 5: one thousand dollars and have a sixty thousand dollars income,
- 32:45Speaker 5: And that is what retirement planning could look like for them.
- 32:49Speaker 5: I'm not saying that your parents are you know, flush
- 32:51Speaker 5: with cash, but in Australia, we are so lucky to
- 32:54Speaker 5: have a system that supports people being able to move
- 32:57Speaker 5: into retirement and live out their best lives. And I'm
- 33:00Speaker 5: not saying it's going to be, you know, an income
- 33:02Speaker 5: of like three hundred grand and they're living plush and
- 33:04Speaker 5: they go on to Italy and all of that. Like
- 33:06Speaker 5: they can retire, they can put food on the table,
- 33:09Speaker 5: they can still enjoy life and not have to work
- 33:12Speaker 5: full time for the rest of their lives. But in
- 33:14Speaker 5: saying that, we are seeing and I'm so passionate about this,
- 33:17Speaker 5: but we are seeing people choose to retire later, like
- 33:20Speaker 5: closer to seventy or seventy five, because they feel fit,
- 33:22Speaker 5: they feel healthy, and they feel well, and they're like, well,
- 33:25Speaker 5: I want to put more money into my superrow. I
- 33:27Speaker 5: want to continue to work so that I can have
- 33:29Speaker 5: more And that's valid as well. So have this conversation
- 33:33Speaker 5: with your parents. You don't know what their intentions are.
- 33:35Speaker 5: And just because the quote retirement age is sixty five
- 33:38Speaker 5: doesn't mean they have to tap out then, especially if
- 33:41Speaker 5: they're fit and well and healthy. Like there's also sorry
- 33:44Speaker 5: getting a little bit ahead of this, there is also
- 33:46Speaker 5: like the ability to do some part time work while
- 33:49Speaker 5: still getting your full time pension. So like there's up
- 33:52Speaker 5: to I think it's about eleven thousand dollars. Do not
- 33:54Speaker 5: quote me on that number because I haven't been a
- 33:56Speaker 5: financial advisor in a long time, but it's about eleven
- 33:59Speaker 5: thousand dollars worth of work you can do. So if
- 34:01Speaker 5: your dad wants to continue doing one or two days
- 34:03Speaker 5: a week or something, he might actually be able to
- 34:06Speaker 5: do that, maintain some like work life balance, and also retire.
- 34:11Speaker 5: So I just there's a lot you can do. And
- 34:13Speaker 5: I think a lot of people just assume fire out.
- 34:16Speaker 5: My parents don't have heaps, they're not going to be
- 34:17Speaker 5: able to retire, and it's going to come back on me.
- 34:20Speaker 5: You know what, I think that stepping into going hey,
- 34:23Speaker 5: I could actually help you with financial planning. It doesn't
- 34:26Speaker 5: mean it has to be your money. So let's maybe
- 34:29Speaker 5: move towards being able to help people that way, because
- 34:32Speaker 5: do you know how many people don't know what they're
- 34:33Speaker 5: able to access?
- 34:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and your time you thinking about it early, like
- 34:36Speaker 4: this is great time to figure it out exactly.
- 34:39Speaker 5: Exactly, and there's never like it's never too late. Yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 5: like there's always a way to make something work. Yeah, totally,
- 34:46Speaker 5: That's why I love financial planning anyway, Sorry, guys, we
- 34:48Speaker 5: can do the juicy stuff now.
- 34:49Speaker 4: All right, this week's m when a little something like this, Hey,
- 34:53Speaker 4: she's some money. This might be over the top, but
- 34:55Speaker 4: it's getting colder and my winter anxiety is setting in.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I live in a share and I'm really careful.
- 35:01Speaker 2: With my money.
- 35:02Speaker 4: I'll layer up sit under a blanket before I even
- 35:05Speaker 4: think about turning the heating on. But my housemate is
- 35:08Speaker 4: the total opposite. She'll crank the heating the second it's
- 35:11Speaker 4: cold and walk around in a T shirt like it's summer.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Every time I hear it kick on, I feel sick
- 35:16Speaker 4: thinking about the bill, our priorities are just so different.
- 35:19Speaker 4: She earns more than I do and doesn't seem to
- 35:22Speaker 4: think about the cost, and I literally lie in bed
- 35:24Speaker 4: worrying about it. I don't think it's fair that we
- 35:26Speaker 4: split the bill fifty to fifty because I barely use
- 35:29Speaker 4: the heater. I haven't said anything because I don't want
- 35:31Speaker 4: to be that housemate, but it's starting to really stress
- 35:34Speaker 4: me out. What do you even do in that situation?
- 35:39Speaker 2: I am the crank the heater housemate.
- 35:42Speaker 6: But I also think, like if you are living with someone,
- 35:47Speaker 6: this is the tricky thing about like housemates, and like
- 35:50Speaker 6: any kind of situation where you are put in a
- 35:53Speaker 6: position where like if you discuss how you're feeling, people
- 35:57Speaker 6: are I don't know what I'm trying to say, but
- 35:58Speaker 6: I think like in this dynamic, the likelihood of someone
- 36:01Speaker 6: getting defensive is so much higher for some reason in
- 36:04Speaker 6: like a sharehouse environment. So it's like it's very hard
- 36:06Speaker 6: to like just be like, oh, just communicate with them.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Because this is a very scary situation. I totally get that.
- 36:13Speaker 6: But hopefully your housemate is someone who is really really
- 36:16Speaker 6: open and really chill, really fair, really kind, and is
- 36:20Speaker 6: not going to be defensive.
- 36:21Speaker 2: That is the perfect scenario.
- 36:23Speaker 6: I do think it's you know, and I don't want
- 36:24Speaker 6: to be like, you know, communication is key, but I
- 36:26Speaker 6: think people grew up different. I feel like if you
- 36:28Speaker 6: grew up wanting to just blast the heater out, like
- 36:32Speaker 6: I grew up in a heater household, where like there's
- 36:34Speaker 6: not even for a single second, and there's no way
- 36:36Speaker 6: I'm going to be uncomfortable in my own house. And
- 36:38Speaker 6: then I moved in with a friend who was like,
- 36:40Speaker 6: just put a blanket on. I'm like, oh, please put
- 36:42Speaker 6: the heater on it. And she's like, put a blanket on,
- 36:43Speaker 6: just put some pants on, and like, but then once
- 36:46Speaker 6: I move from the blanket and I'm in the air again,
- 36:50Speaker 6: I'm freezing cold and I just want to move around
- 36:53Speaker 6: my home comfortably.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And she's like, no, it's you know, just chuck some
- 36:57Speaker 2: socks on, just put more socks.
- 36:59Speaker 6: On, that friendly pairs of socks anywhere I just put
- 37:03Speaker 6: the heater on.
- 37:04Speaker 2: And so like, I'm a heater girl because I want
- 37:06Speaker 2: the air to be warm. I want to move freely.
- 37:09Speaker 2: But I will also pay. I'll happily pay more.
- 37:12Speaker 5: You would hate living with me.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I hate cold.
- 37:15Speaker 5: You would because like even when the heater goes on,
- 37:17Speaker 5: Get this, guys, this is not a flex. Jess would
- 37:20Speaker 5: hate living with me as well. In fact, when just
- 37:22Speaker 5: comes to my house, I purposefully put the heater up
- 37:24Speaker 5: because I know she'll be more that's cue.
- 37:26Speaker 2: But like I will put the heater.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Up to a level when Jess is not in my
- 37:30Speaker 5: house that it just takes the edge off, like it
- 37:32Speaker 5: doesn't have to be warm. But like, girl, we're not
- 37:35Speaker 5: going to be living in twenty three degree heat. Like
- 37:37Speaker 5: you don't need heat twenty three degree heat, No, absolutely not,
- 37:41Speaker 5: and your house does not need to be twenty three degrees,
- 37:43Speaker 5: but like it can't be below like sixteen, that's ridiculous totally,
- 37:47Speaker 5: but like you know, I'll get it up to twenty
- 37:49Speaker 5: and then I'll turn off the heater.
- 37:52Speaker 7: Yeah, because you can wear socks and a blanky and
- 37:57Speaker 7: like it's just so not efficient energy why But also
- 38:00Speaker 7: like it's so expensive, like that's the bee it's so
- 38:04Speaker 7: expended expensive.
- 38:05Speaker 6: But if someone was like I'll pay seventy eighty percent
- 38:08Speaker 6: of the energy bill.
- 38:09Speaker 5: Yeah, but you're not having that conversation yet. So like
- 38:11Speaker 5: if your housemate had said that you're not going to
- 38:13Speaker 5: feel sick at night, are you, like you're not going
- 38:15Speaker 5: to be like worried about it. Just what would you
- 38:17Speaker 5: do if you and I had to time?
- 38:19Speaker 2: Like right in the middle.
- 38:20Speaker 4: So as you guys know, someone actually commented with this
- 38:22Speaker 4: on one of our reels very recently. We spoke about
- 38:25Speaker 4: do you remember we filmed it. It was like, what
- 38:26Speaker 4: would you not give up from your budget? And I said,
- 38:28Speaker 4: I don't think there's anything that I wouldn't cut if
- 38:30Speaker 4: I had to cut things. Yes, And someone commented and said, would.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Just give up her?
- 38:36Speaker 4: We've actually reduced our average temperature by two degrees this year.
- 38:41Speaker 2: It's important we did what it's better for the environment.
- 38:44Speaker 4: And also just like last year, one month we had
- 38:45Speaker 4: a bill it was eight hundred dollars and I nearly died.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I nearly died, but for the quarter, for the quarter
- 38:51Speaker 2: for the gas.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Now it was for a month.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Really yeah, and that's when I was I think our
- 38:56Speaker 4: house and this is the thing is we have high ceilings,
- 38:59Speaker 4: we have a bedroom house, Like it's not cheap to
- 39:01Speaker 4: heat so at all. Yeah, there's lots of things a
- 39:03Speaker 4: factor in. I would say, I agree, you got to
- 39:05Speaker 4: talk to your house mate because if they're like Beck
- 39:07Speaker 4: and they grew up in a household where you didn't
- 39:09Speaker 4: think about it. I grew up in a house that
- 39:10Speaker 4: didn't have heating as a child, like we did not
- 39:12Speaker 4: We had a one single flame heater on the wall.
- 39:16Speaker 2: That was it. Like, we didn't have central it teing,
- 39:18Speaker 2: So it's never something we thought about. As an adult,
- 39:20Speaker 2: I was like, oh my god, heating, this is mint.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Yeah, so I've just like gone really hard on the extreme.
- 39:26Speaker 4: But if you're someone who never had to think about it,
- 39:28Speaker 4: it might not even be occurring to them in the
- 39:30Speaker 4: way that it is to you. So I think that
- 39:33Speaker 4: by bringing it up, if they're as VI was saying,
- 39:35Speaker 4: if they're a nice person, they might just go, oh
- 39:37Speaker 4: my god, I'm so sorry. I hadn't even thought about that.
- 39:39Speaker 4: So hopefully if you approach them kindly, they can just
- 39:42Speaker 4: see it from your perspective. A good alternative if there's
- 39:45Speaker 4: someone like Beck who does want to live in warm air,
- 39:49Speaker 4: look at like.
- 39:49Speaker 2: A little space heater.
- 39:50Speaker 4: You can get some like relatively energy efficient ones nowadays,
- 39:54Speaker 4: and particularly like if you're sitting in a living room
- 39:56Speaker 4: or a bedroom, like you don't need to be heating
- 39:58Speaker 4: a house and all of it rooms if.
- 40:00Speaker 2: You're not using all of the roots totally.
- 40:02Speaker 4: So those little space heaters are great because then maybe
- 40:04Speaker 4: your housemate could heat whatever room they're into their hearts desire.
- 40:08Speaker 4: They can keep it toasty comfortable, the don't have to
- 40:10Speaker 4: feel bad, and the electricity is generally a lot more
- 40:13Speaker 4: affordable than gas as well. So if you can get
- 40:15Speaker 4: an energy efficient one, because there are some that are
- 40:17Speaker 4: really not zero energy efficient, that might be a good
- 40:20Speaker 4: middle ground.
- 40:20Speaker 2: But I think you just have a chat to them.
- 40:22Speaker 6: And I wasn't even thinking about it because we don't
- 40:25Speaker 6: really do the air con like household thing.
- 40:27Speaker 7: I was.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I was thinking about those little orange radiator heaters. You
- 40:31Speaker 2: put your heater blanket on, you get your radiated. You
- 40:34Speaker 2: know it's and so that's what I was.
- 40:35Speaker 4: So that's actually really clod blanket too. We recommended this
- 40:39Speaker 4: on stories recently.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Used to at the office.
- 40:44Speaker 4: If you're an officerity, you would need a heated tha
- 40:47Speaker 4: get it came out. I think you're about forty five dollars.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Aldie did them as a special wife a few weeks ago.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Forty five You would be shocked at how warm one
- 40:54Speaker 2: of those keeps you. A gift.
- 40:57Speaker 5: Also, I want to mention here because Becky said that
- 41:00Speaker 5: it was a really scary thing to have these conversations
- 41:02Speaker 5: with your housemate, and I totally get that. I think
- 41:05Speaker 5: when you're having these conversations, you also need to take
- 41:09Speaker 5: the emotion out of it. But you need to actually
- 41:11Speaker 5: look at how you're approaching situations like this. Because if Beck,
- 41:15Speaker 5: you and I live together and I came to you
- 41:16Speaker 5: and I said, you always have the heater on, immediately,
- 41:19Speaker 5: you're going to be different one hundred percent. So we
- 41:22Speaker 5: need to approach it. Hey, Beck, I'm actually really stressed
- 41:25Speaker 5: about the money side of things, and I noticed our
- 41:27Speaker 5: bill's really high, and I just I feel we're not
- 41:30Speaker 5: saying you do, We're saying I feel like we could
- 41:33Speaker 5: probably cut back on how much we use the heater
- 41:37Speaker 5: because I didn't realize how much it was, or you know,
- 41:40Speaker 5: you could even find some soft ways to integrate it,
- 41:42Speaker 5: be like I saw this TikTok about how much heaters
- 41:44Speaker 5: like actually cost and how much they bump up your bill,
- 41:46Speaker 5: or you know, I listened to this podcast, Like, you
- 41:49Speaker 5: don't have to immediately go you always have the heater.
- 41:52Speaker 5: The second you do that, you're making a defensive conversation
- 41:55Speaker 5: and they're not going to come to the table. They're
- 41:57Speaker 5: going to come to their own defense. So how do
- 42:00Speaker 5: you start a conversation where people are going to come
- 42:02Speaker 5: to the table as opposed to come to the defense.
- 42:05Speaker 5: So I think in any situation, whether it's your housemates
- 42:09Speaker 5: storing their stuff on your shelf in the fridge, or
- 42:11Speaker 5: if it is you, you know, trying to negotiate the heating.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Bill, it's a we thing.
- 42:16Speaker 5: We are in a household together and we are able
- 42:20Speaker 5: to have an impact on our finances.
- 42:22Speaker 6: It's also like the problem is that the energy prices
- 42:25Speaker 6: and you take the people out of it. It's like
- 42:27Speaker 6: you probably love your housemate and you guys have it exactly.
- 42:30Speaker 6: So that's why we need to tackle things as.
- 42:33Speaker 2: A group as opposed to this.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Housemate does one thing and another that just creates division
- 42:38Speaker 5: and it's just going to mean that that's a point
- 42:40Speaker 5: of contention. You might drop the conversation and never want
- 42:43Speaker 5: to come back to it because you're like, oh, we
- 42:44Speaker 5: just fought when that happened.
- 42:47Speaker 2: You want to hear what everyone else?
- 42:48Speaker 4: Yes, please alright it So the first thing we asked
- 42:50Speaker 4: over on Instagram was are you the type of person
- 42:52Speaker 4: who rugs up before you put the heating on? Sixty
- 42:55Speaker 4: one percent said yep, I'm a human burrito, twenty percent
- 42:58Speaker 4: said no, give me the warmth asap, and nineteen percent said,
- 43:03Speaker 4: in this economy, yeah, I am. Next, we said how
- 43:06Speaker 4: would you handle this situation?
- 43:08Speaker 2: Eighty percent of.
- 43:09Speaker 4: People said, girl, you got to bring it up asap,
- 43:12Speaker 4: nine percent of people said I'm just going to live
- 43:14Speaker 4: with it, and twelve percent of people said I'd passive
- 43:17Speaker 4: aggressively start dropping some hints.
- 43:19Speaker 5: Okay, no, no passive aggressiveness. No one wants to live
- 43:22Speaker 5: with someone who's passive aggressive.
- 43:24Speaker 6: No.
- 43:24Speaker 2: It makes people stop leaving notes on things. Stop it. Yeah, yeah,
- 43:28Speaker 2: awkward chats in the group text.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Yeah, stop leaving the house.
- 43:31Speaker 2: They're sending a group message. Come that out.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Lastly, we said give us your two cents. We definitely
- 43:36Speaker 4: got some thoughts. Firstly, somebody said, I implemented a five
- 43:40Speaker 4: clothing rule in my sharehouse, but I must be wearing
- 43:44Speaker 4: pants atop a jumper, socks and slippers before.
- 43:46Speaker 2: The eating grace on. Wow, I kind of don't hate it. Yeah,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I actually like it. I think it's fair too.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Next, somebody said to me, eating is a basic necessity,
- 43:56Speaker 4: and I give up other things before I gave up heating,
- 43:59Speaker 4: which is also a very fair take. Somebody else said,
- 44:02Speaker 4: you have to take the downsides with the upsides of
- 44:04Speaker 4: sharing a house. It is cheaper for a reason, which
- 44:08Speaker 4: is kind of a good point.
- 44:09Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's not if you just have the heater
- 44:10Speaker 5: on the whole time.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I could probably pay more, more less and
- 44:14Speaker 4: live on your own exactly. Somebody else said, I'd want
- 44:17Speaker 4: to have proof that it makes a significant difference before
- 44:20Speaker 4: I bother bringing it up.
- 44:21Speaker 5: So I just look at your winter versus your summer bill. Yeah,
- 44:24Speaker 5: there's your proof, or year on year potentially even before
- 44:28Speaker 5: Jess moved in.
- 44:29Speaker 4: Yeah, cheaper or also get a heat pack. Heat packs
- 44:33Speaker 4: a great for heating. That's another one I've got true.
