- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it. She's on the Money.
- 0:36Speaker 3: She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:01Speaker 4: for millennials who want financial freedom.
- 1:03Speaker 2: My friends, today is Friday again, which means it.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Is time to get my beautiful team together and celebrate
- 1:09Speaker 4: you ow incredible. She's on the Money community today, missus
- 1:13Speaker 4: J Grici is going to be sharing her favorite money
- 1:15Speaker 4: wins from our community. Beck has a few sneaky broke tips.
- 1:19Speaker 4: I don't have anything to contribute this week. I'm so sorry, Beck, Okay,
- 1:22Speaker 4: I ran out. There was one and done last week.
- 1:25Speaker 4: We'll be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma, which
- 1:28Speaker 4: this week is all about asking your partner to make
- 1:30Speaker 4: stubranuation contributions while you're on parental leave, which I think
- 1:34Speaker 4: is real less bussy because I don't know if you
- 1:35Speaker 4: guys know, but I'm pregnant and I have had this
- 1:38Speaker 4: conversation with my husband, so it's been interesting seeing both
- 1:43Speaker 4: sides of the coin. Like, obviously, as a staunch feminist advocate,
- 1:48Speaker 4: I want everybody to be thinking about their superannuation when
- 1:50Speaker 4: they take any type of leave from the workplace. But
- 1:53Speaker 4: now I'm the one also sitting down going, hey, husband,
- 1:56Speaker 4: what are we doing about this super thing?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Because like, I'm.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Not going to be happy if I'm behind of all people. Anyway,
- 2:04Speaker 4: We're also going to be unpacking something that you slid
- 2:06Speaker 4: into our DMS about which this week, get this, we're
- 2:09Speaker 4: going to be talking about a potentially deceptive friend and
- 2:12Speaker 4: a missing sum of cash.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Spicy ice, so juicy.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I love it.
- 2:19Speaker 4: All Right, guys, how have your weeks been before we
- 2:21Speaker 4: get into the episode and before we get to the
- 2:24Speaker 4: juicy stuff.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe you have had juicy weeks.
- 2:26Speaker 6: You go first, yess, technically we've been to the Podcast Awards,
- 2:30Speaker 6: but because of time travel, we haven't been to the
- 2:33Speaker 6: podcast yet, so we're going tonight.
- 2:35Speaker 4: We're up for a couple of awards, which is so
- 2:38Speaker 4: exciting actually.
- 2:40Speaker 6: So nice, Like, obviously, awards don't mean anything, I'm.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Sorry, what they mean a lot to my little ego.
- 2:47Speaker 6: When someone recognizes I guess the hard work that you do,
- 2:49Speaker 6: it is just like so lovely because you know, obviously
- 2:54Speaker 6: we have had a few awards, and recently we were
- 2:57Speaker 6: finalists in the Telstra Best of Business Awards, which for
- 2:59Speaker 6: me was massive and while we didn't take away the win,
- 3:03Speaker 6: I was just we got the certificate in the mail
- 3:06Speaker 6: of like Queer.
- 3:07Speaker 4: A finalist, and I was just like, this just means
- 3:09Speaker 4: we're on the right track and we're doing the right things,
- 3:11Speaker 4: and people like the right people are seeing our content
- 3:14Speaker 4: and saying the stuff that you're doing is having an
- 3:17Speaker 4: impact because obviously there's heaps of podcasts around and the
- 3:21Speaker 4: idea that our podcast actually gets recognized.
- 3:23Speaker 2: To me is wild.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Yeah, but also it's just really validating because I think
- 3:27Speaker 4: I'm doing the right thing. And I'll sit in this
- 3:29Speaker 4: room and I promise you guys will be like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 4: we're so good at the right thing, but to have
- 3:34Speaker 4: an external party, go, hey, guys, that's pretty impressive.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You just go you serious.
- 3:39Speaker 4: So whether we win or tonight, I kind of don't mind.
- 3:42Speaker 4: It's just being in that lineup of like, hey, look
- 3:45Speaker 4: at all these other podcasts.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That we're up against.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Yeah, because like the category we're up in, we're up
- 3:50Speaker 4: against our friend Glenn James, who I adore and I
- 3:52Speaker 4: think his podcast will be very hard to beat.
- 3:55Speaker 2: But then you know who else is in the category,
- 3:57Speaker 2: Mark Boris.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know how she's on the money when
- 4:00Speaker 7: it comes to being a good business.
- 4:03Speaker 2: She's going to beat Mark Boris.
- 4:05Speaker 4: So yeah, I'll probably be eating some humble pie later
- 4:08Speaker 4: this week. But I'm just excited to be, you know,
- 4:11Speaker 4: in the lineup with the big dogs.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Yeah, very really very exciting. Yes, technically we have been,
- 4:17Speaker 5: but I don't know yet if we I feel like
- 4:20Speaker 5: we had a fun time. Yeah, when we go, we
- 4:23Speaker 5: have another time. We have a fun time tonight. But yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 5: the week's been so good. It's just been sure, it's
- 4:30Speaker 5: been busy. Best friend's birthday on Wednesday?
- 4:33Speaker 2: Was my birthday? What are you talking about?
- 4:35Speaker 5: It was your birthday on Wednesday? I think you forgot friend,
- 4:40Speaker 5: I get it, but no, just real chill, real, nice,
- 4:42Speaker 5: well again, busy, busy and good and what are you good?
- 4:44Speaker 2: I did nothing, it was amazing.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Spent some time with friends and family, took my dog
- 4:49Speaker 4: for a lot of walks. She was very happy. I
- 4:52Speaker 4: feel at the moment my favorite thing ever is literally
- 4:54Speaker 4: doing nothing on my weekends.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Like it's wild. It's absolutely whytn recover.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Yeah, this time of year, there's nothing I like more
- 5:01Speaker 6: than a quiet weekend.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been spending a lot of time, just like
- 5:04Speaker 4: on TikTok watching Christmas videos. Real question, though, this isn't
- 5:08Speaker 4: an attack on New Jess, because you love Christmas. You
- 5:10Speaker 4: adore Christmas, and I know how you manage it, like
- 5:13Speaker 4: you always like add a few decorations to a pre
- 5:16Speaker 4: existing stash. But I've seen this year, specifically on TikTok
- 5:21Speaker 4: and Instagram videos, people being like here's my Christmas hall
- 5:25Speaker 4: and then they're spending like my entire Christmas gift budget
- 5:30Speaker 4: or like redecorating their entire house. Whereas I've grown up
- 5:33Speaker 4: in a house where like the same Christmas decorations have
- 5:36Speaker 4: been coming out for like the last thirty years of
- 5:38Speaker 4: my life is that like we meant to be like
- 5:41Speaker 4: redecorating an entire tree and having a brand new theme.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Jess is excluded from me.
- 5:45Speaker 4: She can answer the question, but she's a Christmas girlie,
- 5:48Speaker 4: But like does.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It on a budget?
- 5:50Speaker 4: But I feel like I am seeing every influencer being like,
- 5:54Speaker 4: here's my pottery barn Hall and I bought two pottery
- 5:57Speaker 4: barn pillows recently for Christmas because I was upset and
- 6:00Speaker 4: I basically had to re mortgage my entire house. So like,
- 6:03Speaker 4: where are these women getting the money for the Christmas decorations?
- 6:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's successive.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Hey, lots of people are saying that this time of year,
- 6:10Speaker 6: Christmas Black Friday this year particularly, is feeling really consumer driven,
- 6:15Speaker 6: like very bye bye bye sales sale, like it started
- 6:18Speaker 6: earlier than normal, And like I have no issues with
- 6:21Speaker 6: that because, as you said, I love Christmas.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I will celebrate it for three months. I was, I
- 6:23Speaker 2: don't see this as a personal day. I just want
- 6:25Speaker 2: to talk about this content.
- 6:27Speaker 6: No, but I think I don't wonder if it's got
- 6:29Speaker 6: something to do with the recession and the fact that
- 6:32Speaker 6: I think company.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Ellipstick index but it's the Christmas Index.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Well, yeah, I think companies are probably obviously trying to
- 6:37Speaker 6: drive sales because consumer spend jobs down and that's their job, correct,
- 6:41Speaker 6: But I think I mean for me, I know that
- 6:43Speaker 6: Christmas is really an emotional holiday, and that's why I
- 6:45Speaker 6: buy into it so much.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Is it?
- 6:47Speaker 6: It has very special memories from me as a child,
- 6:49Speaker 6: and that's something I want to continue through. And so obviously, I,
- 6:53Speaker 6: like you said, I budget for it, Like I plan
- 6:55Speaker 6: for it. I'm not spending me on but I.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Know no one else's Yeah, just as a little wizard,
- 6:59Speaker 4: and if she wasn't, she wouldn't be on the ses
- 7:02Speaker 4: on the money team, like she's the best little budgeter.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I can't even Yeah, but I just know that everyone
- 7:07Speaker 4: on TikTok isn't doing that. They're just like racking up
- 7:09Speaker 4: their credit cards for so much Christmas content.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Yeah, and like it's easy to be sucked in even
- 7:14Speaker 6: all the sales, Like I keep having to remind myself
- 7:16Speaker 6: and I have a few money means on this note,
- 7:18Speaker 6: like you don't need everything that you see.
- 7:20Speaker 2: That's on tail, Like it's if you're still spending money.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like it just needs to be said
- 7:26Speaker 4: to go, you know what, that's actually not that normal,
- 7:28Speaker 4: Like most people just use the Christmas decorations they bought
- 7:31Speaker 4: the year before, and like I have a themed tree,
- 7:34Speaker 4: Like it's when I say themed, I mean it's like
- 7:36Speaker 4: one color palette and every year I like add a
- 7:39Speaker 4: few Christmas decorations to that or like, you know, I
- 7:42Speaker 4: don't know what are we talking, Jess, maybe like thirty dollars.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I'll spend on that because like I will.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Always wait until, like they have the sales on the
- 7:50Speaker 4: Christmas decorations and a full price Boxing day, no absolute Boxing.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Day or even the lead up.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Yeah, right now during the Black Friday sales. My favorite
- 8:00Speaker 4: Christmas decorations are like forty to sixty percent off, So
- 8:03Speaker 4: I'm like, well, I'm gonna pick those up because from memory,
- 8:05Speaker 4: they don't get cheaper on Boxing Day, they.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Just have they just have less stocks, so I need
- 8:10Speaker 2: it right now.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But I'll show maybe thirty bucks and get six or seven,
- 8:14Speaker 4: you know, additional decorations.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And I think that's normal. Yeah do you even have
- 8:18Speaker 2: to do that? No?
- 8:19Speaker 6: Yeah, normalized using what you have or like being with
- 8:22Speaker 6: what you have, Like I get it, Like I'm so
- 8:25Speaker 6: guilty of being sucked into it, like the social media
- 8:28Speaker 6: consumerist thing but this is your little reminder, like what
- 8:31Speaker 6: you have is perfectly good, and if you want to
- 8:33Speaker 6: update it, there are so many ways you can di
- 8:35Speaker 6: wire a little refresh, paint your ball balls if you
- 8:37Speaker 6: want a different color. Skime's so smart something like that, Like,
- 8:40Speaker 6: there are lots of little hacks and tricks that you
- 8:42Speaker 6: can news that you don't have to spend money to
- 8:43Speaker 6: make it feel new.
- 8:44Speaker 2: If that's what you are.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Exactly, all right, Well let's get into the actual show.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I just wanted to round about Christmas because any opportunity.
- 8:50Speaker 2: To talk about Christmas is a good one to take.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Miss z Gricci, what have you got when it comes
- 8:55Speaker 4: to money wins and confessions this week?
- 8:57Speaker 6: Starting off with a small, solid one from Kelsey said
- 9:00Speaker 6: something small but price matched my giant dog food bag.
- 9:03Speaker 6: It's usually one hundred and sixty dollars, but I got
- 9:05Speaker 6: it for one hundred and twenty two. And I also
- 9:07Speaker 6: had a ten dollar pet stock reward. Thirteen kilos of
- 9:10Speaker 6: dog food for one hundred.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And twelve dollars.
- 9:12Speaker 5: That's so cord.
- 9:13Speaker 6: I just price matching. Don't forget about price matching, especially
- 9:16Speaker 6: this time of year, because everything is on sale. Next
- 9:19Speaker 6: I have a money win from Kieran, who said I
- 9:21Speaker 6: saved six thousand dollars on top of my one thousand
- 9:24Speaker 6: dollar emergency fund. I'm planning on selling my car soon
- 9:27Speaker 6: and I am hoping to make four thousand dollars, so
- 9:29Speaker 6: I make my goal of saving ten grand to move overseats.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So far, if it all goes.
- 9:34Speaker 6: According to plan, I have reached my goal two months
- 9:36Speaker 6: earlier than I planned. Cosh very exciting. Now I've got
- 9:41Speaker 6: a money loss from Grace, who said money loss. I
- 9:44Speaker 6: caved to some Black Friday deals and Impulse brought some
- 9:46Speaker 6: once which have blown my budget out a little further
- 9:49Speaker 6: than I intended. But I'm taking this is my reminder
- 9:52Speaker 6: to sit down and fine tuned my budget and goals
- 9:54Speaker 6: to better hold myself accountable. And then on the flip
- 9:58Speaker 6: side of that, I have a win from now who
- 10:00Speaker 6: said money win. I'm taking advantage of the early Black
- 10:03Speaker 6: Friday sales. Let's start and finish my Christmas shopping so
- 10:06Speaker 6: I can start saving towards my red jo.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I feel like this is the reminder that I also
- 10:11Speaker 4: need like the Christmas thing I bring up because I
- 10:14Speaker 4: kind of started to play into it a little bit.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I was like, oh, yeah, maybe I will do. And Jesse,
- 10:18Speaker 4: you've already heard this from me. I was like, what
- 10:20Speaker 4: if I did an entire rainbow Christmas tree, like instead
- 10:23Speaker 4: of having my normal Christmas tree that I pull out
- 10:26Speaker 4: every single year because I have a plastic one.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Don't come for me, don't want to hear it.
- 10:30Speaker 4: But I said to Jess, oh my gosh, what if
- 10:32Speaker 4: I went and bought like all rainbow decorations so it
- 10:35Speaker 4: could be like an ombre.
- 10:36Speaker 2: From the top.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Think about it, red, orange, yellow, green, pinker blue, like
- 10:39Speaker 4: it would just be a sleigh. And Jess was obviously
- 10:43Speaker 4: all in because she's Christmas girlie. Like, if you want
- 10:46Speaker 4: Jess to talk you out of something, if you're her friend,
- 10:48Speaker 4: it's not going to happen.
- 10:49Speaker 2: She'll be like, huh, that sounds great, Let's do it. Bush.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I sat down and was like, hold up, wait, what
- 10:55Speaker 4: am I going to do with all these decorations once
- 10:56Speaker 4: Christmas is over?
- 10:57Speaker 2: What am I going to do?
- 10:58Speaker 1: You know?
- 10:59Speaker 4: At this point and then I was thinking a ways
- 11:01Speaker 4: to justify it. I was like, what if I videoed it?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Then it could be like content that I put on
- 11:06Speaker 2: the internet. Then it's like, you know, it makes sense?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Sure, No, you don't need the rainbow Christmas tree, so
- 11:11Speaker 4: I will be having a gold Christmas tree again.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Love yeah, lovely.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I just I can't justify it, guys.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I just feel like Nellie and Grace two flip
- 11:20Speaker 6: sides of the way to look at it.
- 11:21Speaker 7: Right.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Likely you can be sucked in, and you can be
- 11:23Speaker 6: a little bit disappointed maybe in what you've bought, and
- 11:25Speaker 6: be a little bit stressed because you've pushed your budget out,
- 11:28Speaker 6: or you can use it to your advantage. The sales
- 11:30Speaker 6: aren't inherently bad. We talk a lot about just making
- 11:33Speaker 6: your list, checking it twice, making the sales work for you.
- 11:37Speaker 6: So yeah, I feel like it was just really interesting
- 11:39Speaker 6: that we had two people go kind of either way
- 11:41Speaker 6: on the same thread.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I think it's so funny it actually, if you haven't
- 11:44Speaker 4: seen our Instagram post as well from this week, we
- 11:47Speaker 4: did five questions to ask yourself before impulse buying on
- 11:50Speaker 4: Black Friday, and we posted that on Tuesday, So just
- 11:53Speaker 4: to give you a quick rundown, first question is ask
- 11:56Speaker 4: yourself do you really need it?
- 11:57Speaker 2: Second? Can I find a better deal late?
- 12:00Speaker 4: Because like so many times, Black Friday deals are so
- 12:03Speaker 4: impulsive that you never think you're going to get it
- 12:05Speaker 4: ever again. But then you kind of do a bit
- 12:07Speaker 4: of research on the product and you realize it gets
- 12:09Speaker 4: discounted every sale season.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Sure.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Number three does it fit your budget? Number four?
- 12:14Speaker 4: Have I waited twenty four hours before committing to purchase this?
- 12:17Speaker 4: And I promise Black Friday is not just one day?
- 12:20Speaker 6: Is it? Yes?
- 12:20Speaker 4: It's like a little season it because like two weeks
- 12:23Speaker 4: at least exactly, so like you do have time to
- 12:25Speaker 4: put twenty four hours between you and your spending. And
- 12:28Speaker 4: number five will I regret this tomorrow? So five questions
- 12:32Speaker 4: to ask yourself before you do that, and hopefully they
- 12:34Speaker 4: can help you stay off the confessions list in our
- 12:37Speaker 4: many Wins and Confession thread. But please add your confessions
- 12:40Speaker 4: because I feel like everyone feels so much more heard
- 12:43Speaker 4: when we share them. Yeah, it's not us going, oh, beck,
- 12:46Speaker 4: I can't believe it. It's literally us going, like girl,
- 12:48Speaker 4: we get it.
- 12:49Speaker 6: Good reminder, very good reminded, Thank you, Grace. Next money
- 12:52Speaker 6: We is from Sophie who said my usual train line
- 12:55Speaker 6: is being closed for eighteen months to allow for upgrades
- 12:58Speaker 6: and to compensate for the inconvenience, They're giving everybody six
- 13:01Speaker 6: months of.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Free travel on what the train you can't get on? Yeah?
- 13:07Speaker 6: Maybe life loss though, because the other options take so
- 13:09Speaker 6: much longer for me to get to work.
- 13:11Speaker 2: But at least it's free. I think you look, at
- 13:13Speaker 2: least it's free.
- 13:14Speaker 6: It's eighteen months.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Also, yeah, I'm like, oh the math mathing there.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yes, someone needs to raise a few questions with our
- 13:23Speaker 4: council there.
- 13:24Speaker 5: I think whole eighteen months should be free. But I agree,
- 13:27Speaker 5: who am I? Who am I to say?
- 13:28Speaker 4: I think the entire eighteen months should be free because
- 13:32Speaker 4: you are being told that you're being put out for
- 13:33Speaker 4: eighteen months, and I mean free public transport when obviously
- 13:38Speaker 4: the train station is closed. It's like, actually the train
- 13:41Speaker 4: company's fault. Free public transport is not going to cost
- 13:44Speaker 4: them that much because the train's already running. It's not
- 13:47Speaker 4: like they are going to have to add additional services totally. Also,
- 13:50Speaker 4: it's going to cost our community member more because they're
- 13:52Speaker 4: probably going to have to drive to a different station
- 13:54Speaker 4: or find their way there somehow, which costs time and money.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Yeah, totally, but that's all.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Sophie seems happy she's taking the win. Lastly, I've got
- 14:03Speaker 6: one from Taylor who said money and life win. We
- 14:06Speaker 6: started fostering kittens this week.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Why is it a money?
- 14:10Speaker 6: When I hear you ask, cat Haven, which is the shelter,
- 14:12Speaker 6: pays for all of the food, the vet appointments, the toys,
- 14:15Speaker 6: and the other supplies. We get to look after these
- 14:17Speaker 6: sweet little babies at no extra costs. Great for us
- 14:20Speaker 6: because we've always wanted to have pets but aren't in
- 14:22Speaker 6: the position to be able to adopt financially or otherwise.
- 14:25Speaker 6: We get to help these little babies while they're overcoming
- 14:27Speaker 6: their cat flu and help them find their forever homes
- 14:30Speaker 6: by posting their profiles online.
- 14:32Speaker 2: She put a.
- 14:33Speaker 6: Cutey little pick of them all sleeping together.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Gosh, Now nobody tells Jess that this is an option
- 14:38Speaker 4: for her.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I was like, HI, could just have four more kittens?
- 14:41Speaker 4: Absolutely not, She's already got two.
- 14:45Speaker 2: She's just started selecting them.
- 14:47Speaker 6: Me and my boyfriend's cut me off at two unfortunately.
- 14:49Speaker 2: So I did mine. So what I did get this
- 14:51Speaker 2: was get a dog. That's I think here. And then
- 14:53Speaker 2: he said, no more pets.
- 14:54Speaker 4: No, we've already got three Victoria, And I was like,
- 14:57Speaker 4: all right, hear me out a baby.
- 14:59Speaker 2: So I'm winning.
- 15:01Speaker 6: I am win, adding to the group. Yeah, if you
- 15:02Speaker 6: can foster. It's a really good thing. And I know
- 15:05Speaker 6: that the shelters are really overwhelmed at the moment.
- 15:07Speaker 2: So I love it. They cover the costs, which is awesome.
- 15:09Speaker 2: That's really That was such a good note to end on. Yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 2: kittens and Christmas, Like what a good episody today?
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yes?
- 15:17Speaker 2: What have you got when it comes to broke tips
- 15:19Speaker 2: this week?
- 15:20Speaker 5: Okay? So, as per usual, I do have two from
- 15:22Speaker 5: the community and one from myself. So the first one
- 15:25Speaker 5: comes from Kimberly, who has given me a really good
- 15:29Speaker 5: lentil vegan chili con khan recipe. She says that using
- 15:32Speaker 5: red lentils as a meat substitute, which I know is
- 15:35Speaker 5: not ideal for everyone. If you're going in for a
- 15:37Speaker 5: chili con cahn, you kind of crave in that meat.
- 15:39Speaker 5: But if you're going for a.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Vegan, they're delicious, delicious.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I feel like lentils have that meatiness to them, especially
- 15:46Speaker 4: if you.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Cook them low and slow.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Totally totally.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I have fooled my husband in a number of yes.
- 15:51Speaker 5: And they're so filling. So for about ten to twelve dollars,
- 15:55Speaker 5: it makes twelve large serving delicious, So I mean, if
- 16:00Speaker 5: you want that recipe hit me up and I'll.
- 16:02Speaker 4: No no, no, no no, We'll put it on our Instagram
- 16:04Speaker 4: stories today, So you share that with me. We'll share
- 16:07Speaker 4: that with our new graphic designer, Georgia because get this,
- 16:10Speaker 4: that she's on the money team has had to glow up.
- 16:12Speaker 4: We have a real life, full time graphic designer.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Put it in a little recipe card for you guys.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Put it on our inst stories per perfect.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Actually believe chili con can Kimberly' chlicon can. Thank you
- 16:25Speaker 5: so much, Kimberly. And this next one comes from Kate
- 16:27Speaker 5: who says, Hi, beg, I have a broke tip for you.
- 16:29Speaker 5: End of year slash Christmas parties can get expensive, So
- 16:32Speaker 5: for our stealing Santa games, I've said to the team,
- 16:35Speaker 5: just find something around the house that you don't want
- 16:36Speaker 5: anymore and wrap it up. Plant clippings, veggies from your garden,
- 16:40Speaker 5: a plate that doesn't match the rest. It's a way
- 16:42Speaker 5: to declutter. And it's also I love this.
- 16:44Speaker 2: That is so fun.
- 16:46Speaker 5: That's I mean, it's it's great, Like, especially if you're
- 16:48Speaker 5: living in the share house, there's so many like random
- 16:50Speaker 5: plates that don't fit anything else.
- 16:52Speaker 6: It's just going to be really funny. I feel everyone
- 16:54Speaker 6: like opening the bad Santa Presents.
- 16:56Speaker 2: It's gonna be I can't really love that.
- 16:58Speaker 4: It also gives me little sister vibes, so like I
- 17:02Speaker 4: have a little sister Alex.
- 17:04Speaker 2: If you're listening, love you, please look away.
- 17:07Speaker 4: But every time she comes to my house, it's basically like,
- 17:09Speaker 4: what can I steal from you? Yeah, kind of situation. Yea,
- 17:12Speaker 4: she always wants my stuff. Surely other people do too.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Totally totally. There's something that someone has in the house
- 17:19Speaker 5: that surely is like nothing to them, but it's it's
- 17:21Speaker 5: treasure to someone else.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So I love it makes for a really entertaining time.
- 17:26Speaker 5: So yeah, absolutely, I love it. So thank you so
- 17:29Speaker 5: much for that one.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Kate.
- 17:29Speaker 2: All right, Beck, what is your personal broake tip from
- 17:32Speaker 2: this week?
- 17:32Speaker 7: Then?
- 17:33Speaker 5: Okay, so this one, as usual's a little bit rogue.
- 17:35Speaker 5: But I was listening to this thing about embracing rejection
- 17:38Speaker 5: and this kind of ties in somehow. So basically, if
- 17:42Speaker 5: you're I'm a little bit too awkward for this. But
- 17:45Speaker 5: if you're out and about and you're wanting to i
- 17:48Speaker 5: don't know, price match or try and get some free
- 17:50Speaker 5: let's say cookie with your coffee order or something, like
- 17:53Speaker 5: embracing rejection means literally just asking the people around you.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Audacity is high, but not that high.
- 18:02Speaker 5: I know, I know me too, And this is like
- 18:04Speaker 5: it's so good for maybe like every now and then
- 18:08Speaker 5: getting a free sweet treat or getting a free like
- 18:10Speaker 5: you never know what you're gonna get. You might have
- 18:12Speaker 5: like something be reduced, a price of the price of
- 18:14Speaker 5: something be reduced. Like I was saying a few weeks
- 18:16Speaker 5: ago how my friend was going overseas and asked if
- 18:18Speaker 5: the accommodation place could match her budget. They did it.
- 18:22Speaker 5: So just asking people, just asking for freebies, just asking
- 18:26Speaker 5: for discounts, asking for you know, you never know how
- 18:29Speaker 5: far you get. Also, it's like it's character building as well.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Yeahs my character built in that way.
- 18:34Speaker 6: I can if you don't ask, the answers always know.
- 18:37Speaker 6: Isn't that the same exactly?
- 18:38Speaker 4: I say that all the time, but like I couldn't
- 18:40Speaker 4: ask for a free cookie, like like I know that.
- 18:42Speaker 2: That's so I don't know, maybe it's not as scary.
- 18:45Speaker 4: If anybody has been doing this, can you smide into
- 18:48Speaker 4: our DMS and tell us how you've been doing it
- 18:51Speaker 4: without it being weird? Because I cannot imagine going to
- 18:54Speaker 4: my local cafe and being like, yep, butchuoit lates thank you?
- 18:56Speaker 2: Also, do you have any free cookies? Like how do
- 18:58Speaker 2: you ask count thing?
- 19:00Speaker 6: Like maybe you say, oh, is there some kind of specialist?
- 19:02Speaker 2: I buy a coffee and a cookie?
- 19:04Speaker 5: Totally you have.
- 19:05Speaker 6: To pay for the cookie too, well, like they might
- 19:08Speaker 6: just go oh no, no, specially go okay, just the coffee,
- 19:10Speaker 6: thank you totally if I agree, like okay, I need
- 19:13Speaker 6: the language a lot.
- 19:15Speaker 2: But if you say, is there some kind of deal?
- 19:17Speaker 6: I feel like older people, like my parents, especially my
- 19:20Speaker 6: dad was always really good at this, because I think
- 19:22Speaker 6: you get to a point where you're just not embarrassed anymore.
- 19:24Speaker 6: You're like, well, what they say no? So what like
- 19:26Speaker 6: do I care? Like is that the I do right now?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Well that's it.
- 19:29Speaker 6: I think we get so stressy about it. But if
- 19:32Speaker 6: you just ask can, they say no, and you're oh,
- 19:34Speaker 6: that's all right, that's fine.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Like I did get gifted a free cookie the other
- 19:37Speaker 4: day though, so I didn't ask for it though I
- 19:39Speaker 4: was in Subway, because I've recently fallen back in love
- 19:42Speaker 4: with subway, like just sourd sandwiches.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Subway I know so good and I'm always yes, but.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Every time not sponsored, I'm always so like happy with
- 19:54Speaker 4: the price point to you. Anyway, the girl was like, oh,
- 19:56Speaker 4: do you want a cookie? And I said yes because
- 19:59Speaker 4: I felt awkward, but she just gave it to me
- 20:00Speaker 4: for free.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna have to pay dream and
- 20:02Speaker 2: way delicious. It wasn't that. It was my first Subway cookie,
- 20:06Speaker 2: the macadamia. I haven't had that one, the one with
- 20:10Speaker 2: the little in lem and ms.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Oh that's new, that's new to the rotation.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Okay, we really sound like we're plugging.
- 20:19Speaker 2: So we can like Subway for you all work together.
- 20:22Speaker 4: I currently am obsessed with you, but that's okay, all right, Well, Beck,
- 20:25Speaker 4: I like that tip.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 20:27Speaker 4: I do really want to hear from the people in
- 20:29Speaker 4: our community who have the audacity to ask, like, can
- 20:31Speaker 4: you just like give us a little bit of.
- 20:32Speaker 2: A like tutorial.
- 20:33Speaker 4: How do we also have that audacity because right now
- 20:36Speaker 4: I feel really uncomfortable and we shouldn't feel uncomfortable.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So please share. But let's go to a really quick break.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Maybe we can get a cookie, and after the break
- 20:45Speaker 4: we're going to be talking about how do you ask
- 20:47Speaker 4: your partner to make super contributions during your parental leave
- 20:50Speaker 4: and we're going to unpack something you slid into our
- 20:53Speaker 4: DMS about guys.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I'm excited about this one. It's about a potentially deceptive
- 20:57Speaker 2: friend and are missing summer cash. Don't go anywhere. Welcome back, everybody.
- 21:07Speaker 6: Let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Hi.
- 21:12Speaker 7: There, have you got a money dilemma you just can't solve?
- 21:15Speaker 7: The She's on the Money team is here to help.

- 21:20Speaker 7: to answer your most burning money.

- 21:23Speaker 7: To get involved, simply head to our website and leave
- 21:26Speaker 7: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 21:28Speaker 7: yourself on the show.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 21:35Speaker 8: Hi, guys, absolutely love the podcast. My question is around.
- 21:39Speaker 8: You've mentioned a few times your husband or partner contributing
- 21:43Speaker 8: to your super while you know off having a child.
- 21:47Speaker 8: So to give you some context, I earn significantly more
- 21:51Speaker 8: than my husband. I'm on one hundred and twenty five
- 21:53Speaker 8: thousand and he's one fifty five thousand. In our everyday life,
- 21:57Speaker 8: this work's fine. We split everything five percentage of out come.
- 22:01Speaker 8: I just don't even know how to consider the super
- 22:03Speaker 8: topic while off having a baby, and I'm frustrated a
- 22:07Speaker 8: system that is making it complex for me to be
- 22:11Speaker 8: the high income earner and then also to have a
- 22:15Speaker 8: child the way I would like to take the time
- 22:17Speaker 8: off and those sort of things.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I find this a really interesting one because usually you're
- 22:23Speaker 4: asking for superannuation contributions because you're going to be significantly
- 22:27Speaker 4: behind when you return to the workforce. And obviously, let's
- 22:31Speaker 4: pretend you're taking twelve months, because I feel like that
- 22:33Speaker 4: seems to be the average amount of time in in
- 22:35Speaker 4: my friendship group, So that kind of makes most sense
- 22:38Speaker 4: to me to use as an example.
- 22:39Speaker 2: And she didn't tell us.
- 22:40Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, I want your
- 22:43Speaker 4: partner and you to have this conversation about contributing to
- 22:47Speaker 4: superannuation while you're on parental leave, because I don't want you, individually,
- 22:51Speaker 4: or anyone at all to be going back into the
- 22:54Speaker 4: workforce and having a twelve month period when no contributions
- 22:58Speaker 4: are made at all. Now, if you treat everything as
- 23:01Speaker 4: kind of equal, well it wouldn't be a Now, beck
- 23:04Speaker 4: you have to pay for my super contributions.
- 23:07Speaker 2: The conversation from my perspective, would.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Be more around how are we as a couple who
- 23:12Speaker 4: now have a limited budget, going to make sure that
- 23:15Speaker 4: I don't miss out financially for my super because at
- 23:18Speaker 4: the end of the day, it's not just about you,
- 23:20Speaker 4: it's about you and your partner. They're going to miss
- 23:22Speaker 4: out too, because if you you know, in a happy,
- 23:25Speaker 4: go lucky world, you stay together forever and it's all
- 23:27Speaker 4: sunshine and roses. Well, that super contribution decision that we're
- 23:31Speaker 4: making today will put you both ahead in retirement.
- 23:34Speaker 2: If something happens in your relationship, at least.
- 23:37Speaker 4: You haven't fallen behind because of the parenting decisions that
- 23:40Speaker 4: you made you at the time, made because they were
- 23:43Speaker 4: best for your family. So it's all about making sure
- 23:46Speaker 4: that we are financially stable. So the contribution isn't about going, oh,
- 23:50Speaker 4: my spouse has to make that from his pay. It
- 23:53Speaker 4: could actually come out of your parental leave pay, it
- 23:56Speaker 4: could come from some savings, it could.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Come from anywhere. There are some benefits to it.
- 24:01Speaker 4: So if your partner is earning less than you, what
- 24:04Speaker 4: you can do is a spouse super contribution. It's a
- 24:07Speaker 4: voluntary after tax contribution into the superfund of your choice obviously,
- 24:11Speaker 4: but the person making the payments, So your husband in
- 24:14Speaker 4: this circumstance could make the contribution and like do the transfer,
- 24:18Speaker 4: but they can actually benefit from a tax offset of
- 24:21Speaker 4: up to eighteen percent for contributions of up to three
- 24:25Speaker 4: grand a year.
- 24:26Speaker 2: So that's a money win. If we look at.
- 24:28Speaker 4: You, know, you just do some basic maths, your usual
- 24:31Speaker 4: tax rate and because what our friend wrote in is
- 24:35Speaker 4: thirty two and a half cents in the dollar inside superannuation,
- 24:39Speaker 4: the average tax rate is fifteen cents, so that's obviously
- 24:42Speaker 4: very sexy. And what usually happens is if you make
- 24:45Speaker 4: a co contribution or an after tax contribution to superannuation,
- 24:50Speaker 4: come tax time, the ato go, ah, you paid thirty
- 24:54Speaker 4: two and a half cents on the money that you
- 24:56Speaker 4: put in. Let me give you a refund of that
- 24:58Speaker 4: fifteen cents in a dollar to make sure that you're okay.
- 25:01Speaker 4: But they're giving you a little bonus now it's eighteen
- 25:04Speaker 4: so there's like a little bit of a money catch there,
- 25:07Speaker 4: which is very nice and obviously a way to I
- 25:10Speaker 4: guess encourage you to.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Make these contributions.
- 25:13Speaker 4: But when it comes to who should be paying it,
- 25:15Speaker 4: it's not actually going hey, husband, you have to it's Hey,
- 25:19Speaker 4: our family budget looks like this, and superannuation and my
- 25:22Speaker 4: retirement and financial freedom is really important to me.
- 25:25Speaker 2: How are we making sure that I'm not missing.
- 25:26Speaker 4: A year in the market, because compound interest is incredibly
- 25:30Speaker 4: powerful and missing a year actually does put you back significantly.
- 25:36Speaker 2: What do you reckon, Jess?
- 25:37Speaker 4: How would you approach this conversation, because as we all know,
- 25:40Speaker 4: you're the big dog in the relationship at this point
- 25:42Speaker 4: in time.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I feel like maybe fifty thousand if you're going
- 25:46Speaker 6: to be living just on that salary, and then obviously
- 25:48Speaker 6: whatever parental leave you're entitled.
- 25:51Speaker 2: To, it's not a lot of money to stretch.
- 25:53Speaker 6: So I feel like potentially maybe saying, hey, like I
- 25:55Speaker 6: don't expect my super contributions to be at where they
- 25:58Speaker 6: are because eleven percent, and of course one hundred and
- 26:01Speaker 6: twenty five thousand is significantly more than you know, eleven
- 26:04Speaker 6: percent of what your part would be earning it at
- 26:06Speaker 6: fifty thousand, So maybe go Okay, well at a minimum
- 26:09Speaker 6: wage point, because that's how the government calculates parental leave.
- 26:12Speaker 6: I think like it's based off of the minimum wage.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Maybe you contribute to your super as if you're earning
- 26:18Speaker 6: minimum wage instead, as your money is still going in,
- 26:21Speaker 6: maybe it's a little bit more attainable within the means
- 26:23Speaker 6: of you know, the salary that you're living off of,
- 26:26Speaker 6: but contributions are still being made, like it's not as
- 26:28Speaker 6: if no money is being put in, so you are
- 26:30Speaker 6: still taking advantage of compound interest. And that's kind of
- 26:33Speaker 6: a middle ground because I can see how for the
- 26:35Speaker 6: partner that might be stressful and for you as well
- 26:38Speaker 6: if you're trying to live off this one wage and
- 26:39Speaker 6: you're just trying to pay your bills and pay for
- 26:41Speaker 6: all of the newborn expenses and then contributing that touperanuation
- 26:44Speaker 6: at such a high amount could maybe feel like a stretch.
- 26:47Speaker 6: So maybe it's approaching it and saying, hey, can we
- 26:50Speaker 6: find a rate that does fit within our budget that
- 26:53Speaker 6: we can contribute, and you know, if we need to
- 26:55Speaker 6: make some other sacrifices to make that work, that's what
- 26:58Speaker 6: we do, because it's a small amount to be living
- 27:00Speaker 6: a love as a family of three. But I think
- 27:03Speaker 6: you're totally right like explaining why it's important as well,
- 27:06Speaker 6: because I think.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Men, particularly but people.
- 27:10Speaker 6: Generally, like I've had this conversation with my friends and
- 27:12Speaker 6: a lot of them had never thought about it either.
- 27:14Speaker 6: You don't really think about the superat and you don't
- 27:16Speaker 6: think about the fact that if you aren't contributing while
- 27:19Speaker 6: you're on parental leave, that that has a really significant
- 27:22Speaker 6: impact on you down the tracks. Even running the numbers
- 27:24Speaker 6: and being like, hey, like I miss out on five
- 27:27Speaker 6: thousand dollars over the course of the year, and in
- 27:29Speaker 6: thirty years that five thousand dollars could have been x,
- 27:31Speaker 6: you know, So explaining the numbers to them, I think,
- 27:34Speaker 6: and showing them the why and what it means, and
- 27:37Speaker 6: I suppose not making it seem as that you're just saying, oh,
- 27:40Speaker 6: I want money because that's what I always have. Because
- 27:42Speaker 6: I think if you approach the conversation with someone who's
- 27:45Speaker 6: never thought about it, they might just be a bit
- 27:46Speaker 6: taken aback from a lack of understanding. So educating them
- 27:50Speaker 6: might be really helpful in having that conversation and being
- 27:52Speaker 6: flexible in the amount I feel like is maybe the
- 27:54Speaker 6: best way to make it work.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I agree.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I think it's so important to talk about it as well,
- 28:00Speaker 4: and maybe not just go, oh, the only way is
- 28:03Speaker 4: for my partner to contribute, because there are a number
- 28:05Speaker 4: of different super strategies you could implement, right, Like, you
- 28:08Speaker 4: could do a number of things. So I have had
- 28:10Speaker 4: clients historically go, oh, in the next couple of years,
- 28:13Speaker 4: I think I'm going to take leaves. So what I'm
- 28:14Speaker 4: going to do is bump up my super contributions by
- 28:17Speaker 4: two percent. And they've calculated that all out, so that
- 28:20Speaker 4: puts them a year ahead.
- 28:21Speaker 2: So they don't even have to have that conversation with
- 28:23Speaker 2: their partner.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Because parental leave is stressful, Like it's not something that.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Is you know, all sunshine and roses.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Like my husband and I are going through this like
- 28:33Speaker 4: planning stage at the moment where we go, okay, he
- 28:35Speaker 4: gets three months at his full time salary, right, so
- 28:39Speaker 4: we are currently trying to work out our budget for
- 28:41Speaker 4: him to take.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Six months at half pay.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Sure, but it's all about doing the maths and the
- 28:46Speaker 4: numbers and working it all out. I'm sure that if
- 28:48Speaker 4: you're in this circumstance, you're doing it too. But there's
- 28:51Speaker 4: a number of different strategies you can implement, So I
- 28:53Speaker 4: guess let's contextualize this too.
- 28:56Speaker 2: So research tells us that.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Two children could to one hundred thousand dollars in lost super.
- 29:03Speaker 2: So obviously we.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Have paid parental leave and all of these fun fancy things,
- 29:07Speaker 4: but not many of them include superannuation. And that's because
- 29:10Speaker 4: employers are not obligated to make super contributions while you're
- 29:13Speaker 4: on parental leave, which is great. One thing I think
- 29:16Speaker 4: that employers could be doing is going, you know what, Jess,
- 29:19Speaker 4: we are a small business. We might not be able
- 29:21Speaker 4: to pay you full time for that period of time,
- 29:23Speaker 4: but how about we do the government thing and your
- 29:25Speaker 4: super and then everybody is in a better position financially.
- 29:29Speaker 4: You can actually call your super fund as well and
- 29:32Speaker 4: let them know that you're going on parental leave, and
- 29:34Speaker 4: a lot of them will actually wave fees for that
- 29:36Speaker 4: period of time. So they'll waive fees on your insurances
- 29:40Speaker 4: because during that period of time you're not going to
- 29:42Speaker 4: be able to get income protection because you're on parental
- 29:45Speaker 4: leave and you don't have income, so they might wave
- 29:48Speaker 4: those fees. They might also be really kind and wave
- 29:51Speaker 4: your super fees. Like the ADMIN stuff again goes back
- 29:54Speaker 4: to you, Beck. What you're saying before got to have
- 29:57Speaker 4: a little bit of an audacity. What kind of deal
- 29:59Speaker 4: can you cut here? But the end of the day,
- 30:02Speaker 4: like lost super during parental leave.
- 30:04Speaker 2: I looked this up before. Analysis by Industry Super Australia shows.
- 30:09Speaker 4: A woman who spends five years out of the paid
- 30:11Speaker 4: workforce in her late twenties to early thirties could be
- 30:15Speaker 4: almost one hundred thousand dollars worse off in retirement and
- 30:18Speaker 4: that's a lot of money totally, so it's definitely ask
- 30:22Speaker 4: your partner what about co contributions? Can we afford this?
- 30:25Speaker 4: Can yours partner split their super so like, instead of
- 30:28Speaker 4: them getting their full super, can you have half of
- 30:31Speaker 4: it for that period of time so that you're both
- 30:33Speaker 4: on an equal playing field. Can you contribute in the
- 30:37Speaker 4: lead up to having children when you get back to
- 30:39Speaker 4: work if you didn't have any ability to contribute to super,
- 30:42Speaker 4: don't worry, guys, we're in a cost of living crisis.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I totally get it.
- 30:45Speaker 4: But could you bump it back up once you get
- 30:47Speaker 4: back to work to kind of get back to where you.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Needed to be?
- 30:50Speaker 4: And the other thing here is if we're caring so
- 30:52Speaker 4: much about SUPER contributions, have you reviewed your SUPER recently?
- 30:57Speaker 4: Is it the right fund for you to even during
- 31:00Speaker 4: this period of time?
- 31:02Speaker 2: And they performing well?
- 31:04Speaker 4: Like, it's not just about fees it's about fees, performance, structure,
- 31:07Speaker 4: your ethics, all of those things. And if you haven't
- 31:09Speaker 4: reviewed your super recently, now is the time because all
- 31:12Speaker 4: of this is wasted if you're not getting it back
- 31:14Speaker 4: on performance. So obviously this is a subtle shout out
- 31:18Speaker 4: as well to our friends at sky Wealth. They can
- 31:20Speaker 4: fix all of that for you, and we'll put their
- 31:22Speaker 4: info in the show notes. But it's one of those
- 31:24Speaker 4: things that you just go make sure that you've got
- 31:26Speaker 4: your ducks in a row.
- 31:27Speaker 2: But also their house is quite sturdy.
- 31:29Speaker 5: That's so true. And I mean, I have a lot
- 31:32Speaker 5: to add here, but I'm just gonna say there's a
- 31:34Speaker 5: lovely government organization women in super trying to bridge that gender.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Super gap, So you know they're cool.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Other than that, really, that's all from me. You guys
- 31:45Speaker 5: have fantastic advice.
- 31:48Speaker 2: We try a hardest.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly what talking about it almost like I used
- 31:52Speaker 4: to be a financial advisor.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Yeah, you kind of seem like you used to feel
- 31:56Speaker 5: it's a bit weird.
- 31:56Speaker 2: It's a bit weird.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Let's move on though, because I have in trump at
- 32:00Speaker 4: that bit to get to this DM this week, because
- 32:03Speaker 4: when I baited it before and I was like a
- 32:05Speaker 4: potentially deceptive friend and are missing some of cash.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Surely you guys were also like, please let us add it.
- 32:11Speaker 2: We're dying. We're dying, all right. So are you ready
- 32:14Speaker 2: for the DM of the week? So ready? Here is
- 32:16Speaker 2: what we received. Girls. I'm going to need your thoughts
- 32:19Speaker 2: on this.
- 32:20Speaker 4: I was having issues with my card to pay for things,
- 32:23Speaker 4: and I needed to pay for a bunch of bills
- 32:25Speaker 4: as soon as possible, so I sent.
- 32:27Speaker 2: My friend some money.
- 32:28Speaker 4: It was around three hundred dollars and asked if she
- 32:30Speaker 4: could try paying them using her card because mine wasn't working.
- 32:34Speaker 4: She happily accepted me transferring her the money, but said
- 32:38Speaker 4: when she tried to pay the bills, it also didn't work.
- 32:41Speaker 4: So I asked her to transfer the cash back, and
- 32:44Speaker 4: that was over a week ago. She says she's already
- 32:47Speaker 4: sent it back and I should contact the bank because
- 32:49Speaker 4: there isn't anything else she can do. However, we've transferred
- 32:53Speaker 4: money between each other before and it happens instantly.
- 32:56Speaker 2: At the moment, I don't know what to think.
- 32:58Speaker 4: I trust her, That's why I sent her the money
- 33:01Speaker 4: in the first place, to help me, but I'm starting
- 33:04Speaker 4: to become sus on if she really sent it, but
- 33:07Speaker 4: I can't accuse her of this.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Do you think I could ask her.
- 33:10Speaker 4: To send her own money in the meantime until we
- 33:12Speaker 4: figure out where my money went. I desperately need that
- 33:15Speaker 4: money to pay my bills, which still aren't paid.
- 33:18Speaker 2: How would you handle these girls?
- 33:21Speaker 5: Oh? This is so tricky. The whole time, I'm thinking, like,
- 33:24Speaker 5: can she not send a screenshot of the transfer?
- 33:26Speaker 2: You know what I mean? But that's what I'd be
- 33:28Speaker 2: asking for. I'd be like, oh my god, I'll call
- 33:30Speaker 2: the bank. Can you please tell me what the reference
- 33:32Speaker 2: number was?
- 33:32Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 33:33Speaker 5: And also like it is scary because you're like, maybe
- 33:35Speaker 5: you sent it to a different person whose name looked
- 33:38Speaker 5: similar to mine, you weren't really paying attention, Like they're
- 33:41Speaker 5: just just I would just desperately want a screenshot, which
- 33:45Speaker 5: I know is also bad because it like kind of,
- 33:47Speaker 5: you know, suggests you don't trust that they sent it
- 33:49Speaker 5: or something.
- 33:50Speaker 4: But I think so I have literally sent money to
- 33:52Speaker 4: the wrong person before, haven't I jestedly when I say
- 33:56Speaker 4: that it was just sending my money to one of
- 33:58Speaker 4: my friends instead of a supply, it was.
- 34:01Speaker 2: A lot of money. Oh I see, not a good time.
- 34:04Speaker 4: And you know what shout out to Haley Short. I
- 34:06Speaker 4: know she listens to this podcast. She called me immediately and.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Was like, I don't think you meant to do this.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Can you please come and take it back asab And
- 34:14Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, I'm so sorry.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Thanks. That's really nice.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Yeah, because she's a wholesome human being. But it doesn't
- 34:22Speaker 4: sound like your friend is one.
- 34:23Speaker 2: So what do we do?
- 34:24Speaker 5: I guess. I guess also like, if you have that
- 34:27Speaker 5: relationship where you can borrow money from each other and
- 34:29Speaker 5: stuff like that, because it seems like you've transferred money
- 34:31Speaker 5: from the past, maybe you can ask to borrow the
- 34:33Speaker 5: three hundred dollars. And then I really don't know. I
- 34:35Speaker 5: guess you just need proof, is all I'm thinking.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I feel like you've got to like, if she
- 34:42Speaker 6: hasn't done anything wrong, benefit of the doubt, and she's
- 34:44Speaker 6: just like, I don't know, like I sent the money,
- 34:46Speaker 6: there shouldn't be any issue with her sending the screenshot.
- 34:49Speaker 6: I feel like maybe rather than sending the screenshop get
- 34:52Speaker 6: together and say, hey, you know, I've spoken to my bank.
- 34:55Speaker 6: They need the reference number to be able to look
- 34:57Speaker 6: into it. Can you just put up on your phone
- 34:59Speaker 6: and and if she goes for whatever reason, she can't
- 35:02Speaker 6: say no dramas, let's try calling your bank, because we'll
- 35:05Speaker 6: need to verify your identity to get that information. I
- 35:08Speaker 6: can't call your bank and get that info for you.
- 35:10Speaker 6: Can we just give them a buzz now and be
- 35:12Speaker 6: honest and say, I just I really need it sorted,
- 35:14Speaker 6: because I, like, I have bills to pay.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I so agree with that.
- 35:19Speaker 4: I would just operate under the assumption that she has
- 35:21Speaker 4: not lied to you, because it's going to come out
- 35:24Speaker 4: in the wash like it's now, I guess twenty twenty three,
- 35:28Speaker 4: and everything is electronically documented. So I would do exactly
- 35:32Speaker 4: what Jess said and go, hey, can you send me
- 35:34Speaker 4: the reference number. I'm going to call my bank and
- 35:36Speaker 4: just have them follow up on it and maybe put
- 35:38Speaker 4: a little bit of the fear of God into her.
- 35:40Speaker 4: And you're like, oh, if you can't find that, maybe
- 35:42Speaker 4: we should really like flag your bank and my bank
- 35:44Speaker 4: for for aud Like, yeah, what's happened? Where has it gone?
- 35:47Speaker 4: Like my bank has confirmed it went to your bank.
- 35:50Speaker 4: What does this look like?
- 35:52Speaker 8: Ye?
- 35:52Speaker 4: Because essentially your friend's going to be backed into a
- 35:54Speaker 4: corner because the bank's going to go no, no, no, we
- 35:56Speaker 4: can see it got put into this account number this BSB. Hey,
- 36:00Speaker 4: we've done what you told us to do. Yeah, And
- 36:02Speaker 4: then from the flip side, you're right, go all right, Well.
- 36:05Speaker 2: When can I come over and we.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Can call your bank and like we can have a chat,
- 36:09Speaker 4: Like we can both be on the phone, because I
- 36:11Speaker 4: promise the money will probably be found very quickly or
- 36:14Speaker 4: you'll honestly brutal, you'll lose a friend really quickly.
- 36:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean the chance if it's always instant normally,
- 36:21Speaker 6: the chances of it taking with OSCO, if you've transferred,
- 36:24Speaker 6: it should be instantaneous, yes, And like I understand that
- 36:28Speaker 6: sometimes there can be like very short delays with processing
- 36:31Speaker 6: or whatever, but not over the course of a week,
- 36:33Speaker 6: I wouldn't think.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Yeah, And you always get people communicating with you as
- 36:37Speaker 4: well from the bank. So I have had, you know,
- 36:40Speaker 4: times where I've transferred money to a new person. I've
- 36:44Speaker 4: never had an issue with old So like I have
- 36:46Speaker 4: like everybody you know in my payroll, in everyone that
- 36:49Speaker 4: I send money to saved, and I feel like I
- 36:52Speaker 4: don't even get the security code text message anymore. They're
- 36:55Speaker 4: just like, oh, chuck your banking password in and you
- 36:57Speaker 4: can transfer it. Because this is a trusted trendransfer, but
- 37:01Speaker 4: if it's new, they actually will message you and be like, oh,
- 37:04Speaker 4: we've flagged this one. Can you please call us to
- 37:06Speaker 4: verify or can you please reply one via text message
- 37:09Speaker 4: to confirm this was you transferring this. So if they
- 37:13Speaker 4: hadn't communicated with you, it should have gone through immediately
- 37:16Speaker 4: from my perspective, because we're talking about three hundred dollars here,
- 37:19Speaker 4: not three hundred thousand, and you're trying to get a
- 37:21Speaker 4: home deposit across which takes a much bigger period of
- 37:25Speaker 4: time because of banking limits, So like I would get
- 37:28Speaker 4: it if you were, like, oh my god, because it
- 37:30Speaker 4: is stressful, right, Like I remember when we were buying
- 37:32Speaker 4: our first house and I had to transfer the deposit
- 37:35Speaker 4: for the house into the real estate like trust fund,
- 37:37Speaker 4: and I just remember being like those numbers.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I checked my numbers fifty times.
- 37:41Speaker 4: But then also I had a transfer limit, so I
- 37:44Speaker 4: had to go down to the bank and pay for
- 37:46Speaker 4: this manual transfer to be done of this lump sum
- 37:49Speaker 4: at one time.
- 37:50Speaker 2: And like, I'm.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Sorry, everything's documented, So I'm suspicious from the get go totally.
- 37:56Speaker 5: And if the friends listening, Hey, do you really want
- 37:59Speaker 5: to lose a friend over three hundred dollars. Something will
- 38:01Speaker 5: last very long and the friendship might last forever.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and have a good thing about why you're doing this,
- 38:06Speaker 4: like if you're strapped to cash, Okay, I totally understand it,
- 38:09Speaker 4: but this is not how to solve your problem in
- 38:11Speaker 4: the short term, like in the long term, this is
- 38:13Speaker 4: going to harm you. Also, the reputation that comes off
- 38:16Speaker 4: this like terrible, like because people are going to ask,
- 38:20Speaker 4: right like, oh, hey, Jess, why don't you talk to
- 38:23Speaker 4: V anymore? Jess is going to go it's a bit awkward,
- 38:26Speaker 4: like we just don't talk anymore after you know, I
- 38:28Speaker 4: transferred her three hundred bucks and you know, I asked
- 38:31Speaker 4: for it back and rarah. It was just awkward. I
- 38:33Speaker 4: don't really know what happened to it. Other people are
- 38:35Speaker 4: going to deduct that it's not a good situation. Even
- 38:39Speaker 4: if Jess says absolutely, oh she's really nice, but I
- 38:41Speaker 4: just don't get it, like she cut me out after that,
- 38:44Speaker 4: stopped replying to my message.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean?
- 38:45Speaker 4: It's just like you're going to look like a bit
- 38:48Speaker 4: of a potato.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Sure, Like that's not great.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Sure, no one.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Wants to be called a potato, right, Like that's true
- 38:55Speaker 4: unless you're a French fry. But yeah, let's see what
- 38:59Speaker 4: the community said. We asked them a few spicy questions.
- 39:02Speaker 4: First one was, do you think it sounds like the
- 39:05Speaker 4: friend has kept the money in lined about sending it back?
- 39:08Speaker 2: Obviously, we asked that one first.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Yeah, eighty two percent of you were like, Yep, yep,
- 39:13Speaker 4: we do think that. We then said, do you think
- 39:16Speaker 4: this person can ask their friend to transfer their own
- 39:19Speaker 4: money since hers has gone missing? Forty two percent of
- 39:22Speaker 4: you said yes, it's the friend's responsibility to help, and
- 39:24Speaker 4: fifty eight percent of you said no, it was her
- 39:26Speaker 4: decision to send her money. I kind of am rock
- 39:30Speaker 4: in a hard place because like if I transferred you
- 39:32Speaker 4: money back and it genuinely went missing, like, it's kind
- 39:36Speaker 4: of on me, not on you.
- 39:38Speaker 6: Yeah, Like I don't know if you have the relevant
- 39:41Speaker 6: proof to show you.
- 39:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 6: Yeah, if her friend can say here's the transfer, I've
- 39:44Speaker 6: got no idea what's going on? Percent But I also
- 39:46Speaker 6: it sounds like the friend's not being very helpful either.
- 39:47Speaker 6: Like if that was us and you said, hey, like
- 39:49Speaker 6: the money hasn't come back, I would be on the
- 39:51Speaker 6: phone to my bank being like, hey, like, what's the
- 39:53Speaker 6: go Totally.
- 39:54Speaker 4: I think I'm also a bit negative about this, like, oh,
- 39:57Speaker 4: can your friend transfer you some money? In the trim,
- 39:59Speaker 4: I'm like, there's already a problem communicating about money.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I don't think we need to add an extra layer.
- 40:04Speaker 2: If he said she said like.
- 40:06Speaker 4: I owe you, you owe me vice versa like I
- 40:08Speaker 4: just think it's not worth the time. Yeah, we said,
- 40:12Speaker 4: if this was you, would you tell your friend you
- 40:14Speaker 4: didn't believe they'd sent the money. Seventy two percent said yep,
- 40:17Speaker 4: and I'd ask for proof of the transfer.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Wow, ballsy people. I would never.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Accuse anybody of anything. As I said, I'm very much
- 40:24Speaker 4: a garden path kind of gal. I'd be like, can
- 40:27Speaker 4: you please send me the reference number, I'll follow it
- 40:29Speaker 4: up with my bank, and I'll let you dig your
- 40:31Speaker 4: own grave. I'm not going to accuse you of anything
- 40:33Speaker 4: I can't prove totally. And then twenty eight percent of
- 40:36Speaker 4: you said no, But it's because I hate confrontation. Relatable,
- 40:41Speaker 4: We asked, do you think it is a bad idea
- 40:43Speaker 4: to ask friends for help with money problems? Seventy seven
- 40:46Speaker 4: percent of you said yep, it always ends badly and
- 40:49Speaker 4: ruins friendship said twenty three percent of you said no,
- 40:51Speaker 4: I've had really positive experiences with it. I think this
- 40:55Speaker 4: is really going to depend on the friend. Like this
- 40:58Speaker 4: situation should have ended up with like oh he said,
- 41:02Speaker 4: she said, kind of like oh, I transferred it. You
- 41:05Speaker 4: didn't get it, Like you had problems with your bills
- 41:08Speaker 4: and your friend was like, oh, I can try and
- 41:09Speaker 4: pay them for you.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Here's the cash.
- 41:11Speaker 4: I feel like, Jess, that's something that you and I
- 41:13Speaker 4: would do if we were in a pickle, and it
- 41:15Speaker 4: wouldn't be like a friendship borrowing money sitch, Like Jess
- 41:18Speaker 4: would just transfer me the money and I'd try and
- 41:20Speaker 4: pay the thing, right. Yeah, Like that to me feels
- 41:23Speaker 4: like a different thing than you know, borrowing money from
- 41:26Speaker 4: a friend. Like I think those are two different circumstances
- 41:30Speaker 4: because you're like, Babe, I've got the money, my bank
- 41:32Speaker 4: just won't transfer it or my card's broken or whatnot.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Because like you should have been a very heavy step step.
- 41:37Speaker 4: Step exactly, but like that's just you're telling me that
- 41:41Speaker 4: I gave you three hundred well you know you gave
- 41:43Speaker 4: me three hundred bucks, and then oh, what a cowinky
- 41:46Speaker 4: dink you don't have it anymore.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a bit weird.
- 41:49Speaker 4: And then we obviously get this. We asked for you
- 41:52Speaker 4: two cents. And I love this part because some of
- 41:54Speaker 4: you are savages. Some of you honestly need to have
- 41:59Speaker 4: a good, hard thing about the type of human being
- 42:01Speaker 4: you are. And I don't read those comments on are
- 42:05Speaker 4: others You're really funny. You're really funny. But here are
- 42:08Speaker 4: some of the responses. So my best friend lent me
- 42:11Speaker 4: fifteen hundred bucks for a car, and I learned how
- 42:14Speaker 4: to manage money so I could quickly pay her back
- 42:17Speaker 4: because I owed that to her.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I think positive experience.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Someone said, if they are a true friend, there should
- 42:24Speaker 4: be no problem in sharing the receipts and they should
- 42:27Speaker 4: actually be quite motivated to help you solve this problem.
- 42:30Speaker 2: So true, it's a good problem.
- 42:31Speaker 4: That's just missing three hundred bucks, Like I have done
- 42:34Speaker 4: way more for less us.
- 42:35Speaker 6: Yes, she's just hunted down people on the internet.
- 42:38Speaker 4: I've done a lot of things that I am not
- 42:40Speaker 4: that proud of. Because a friend is literally like, oh
- 42:43Speaker 4: my god, x y Z happened to be I'm.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Like, sit down, yeah, sit down, I sound proud.
- 42:48Speaker 5: I feel like that sounds like proud.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Of my life anyway, we won't go into the time
- 42:53Speaker 4: that I hunted someone's phone down on Find my Friends
- 42:55Speaker 4: and not on a random person's front door to.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Be like, hey, we know you have the phone, give
- 42:59Speaker 2: it back. Yes, I could have died back. Don't tell
- 43:02Speaker 2: my husband. We said that we were going shopping.
- 43:05Speaker 4: So the next person said she should ask for a
- 43:08Speaker 4: screenshot of the transfer so she can go to her
- 43:10Speaker 4: bank with the evidence.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Again, I think this is the page that we're all on.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Someone else said I would never accuse a friend of lying,
- 43:18Speaker 4: but would ask for transfer proof so I can follow
- 43:20Speaker 4: up with the bank. I feel like we're all on
- 43:22Speaker 4: the same page about just like maybe not being too confrontational,
- 43:25Speaker 4: but also being like, hey that can I have the proof?
- 43:28Speaker 4: Because any good friend would be like, oh yeah, yeah,
- 43:30Speaker 4: Like honest to god, if I had your three hundred
- 43:33Speaker 4: bucks and I had transferred it back, I would be
- 43:34Speaker 4: sending you a screenshots. But I'd also be like handing
- 43:37Speaker 4: my phone across the table and have a look, I've
- 43:40Speaker 4: transferred it here. Where do you think I've gone wrong?
- 43:42Speaker 4: Do you need screenshots of my entire banking history? Like
- 43:44Speaker 4: this has never happened before? Double check that Yeah, can
- 43:47Speaker 4: you just check your bsban account number? Maybe I transferred
- 43:50Speaker 4: it to the wrong thing. Like I'd be literally handing
- 43:53Speaker 4: my phone across the table being like, can you have
- 43:55Speaker 4: a look at this too, because I automatically go to,
- 43:58Speaker 4: oh my god, someone might not trust me.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I don't want that. I want to be
- 44:01Speaker 2: like so transparent.
- 44:03Speaker 4: So it is really confusing to me when people are
- 44:06Speaker 4: so like, oh no, I sent it, yeah, and then provide.
- 44:10Speaker 5: No proof, totally.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Being a bit avoidant.
- 44:14Speaker 5: Yeaxactly.
- 44:15Speaker 2: It feels like it. Yeah.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Someone said I've gotten pretty good at being confrontational about stuff,
- 44:20Speaker 4: but I always end up short changed.
- 44:23Speaker 2: That's not good.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Someone has said, quote I don't believe you, big red
- 44:28Speaker 4: cross emoji, and then quote send picks of transfer for
- 44:32Speaker 4: my reference because I'll call my bank please, and then
- 44:34Speaker 4: big green tick emoji.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah.
- 44:38Speaker 4: I feel like every single response is basically us going.
- 44:41Speaker 4: I mean, there are a few spicy people who are
- 44:43Speaker 4: not so nice, in which case have a good hard
- 44:46Speaker 4: think about yourself today, my friend, but everybody else was
- 44:50Speaker 4: very very helpful in terms of I think just being
- 44:52Speaker 4: on the same page as us, Like twenty twenty three,
- 44:55Speaker 4: everything is tracked. You will be able to track it
- 44:57Speaker 4: down if your friend shares the receipts and the transfer
- 45:00Speaker 4: codes and everything else. Money doesn't just go missing, no,
- 45:03Speaker 4: because if it did, a lot of people would be
- 45:04Speaker 4: really rich and we wouldn't have any trust in our
- 45:07Speaker 4: banking system here in Australia.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Also, if that person wants to give us an update,
- 45:11Speaker 5: do you ever get the money and tell Allie yes,
- 45:15Speaker 5: seriously the juice?
- 45:17Speaker 2: All right, Well that is all we have got this week,
