- 0:00So spontaneity is overrated and and I think often like didn't exist at all.
- 0:04We called it a date or we called it going out, but but it was scheduled sex.
- 0:09If you have to try it all, you're not meant to be.
- 0:13That's again to like setting up couples to fail.
- 0:16It's play.
- 0:18We are animals.
- 0:19We're rolling around.
- 0:19It's super silly.
- 0:20It's super ridiculous.
- 0:22It should be fun.
- 0:22Flirting is not for the the first time you meet someone.
- 0:26Flirting is for the duration of a relationship.
- 0:29Actually, I really do have this desire and I want to sleep with my husband.
- 0:35I still am a sexual being.
- 0:37We get to be sexy throughout our lifespan and through a long term relationship.
- 0:43And so
- 0:46Hey, everyone.
- 0:47Welcome back to another episode of the Libido Lounge.
- 0:49I'm your host, doctor Diane, and I'm so excited to welcome back for another week Caroline Hood.
- 0:55If you missed our episode last week, I strongly recommend you go back.
- 1:00We'll put the link in the show notes for part one of this conversation.
- 1:03And we talked a lot in that episode around desire fading in long term relationships and
- 1:09what to do about that as well as if this is really even true.
- 1:13Right?
- 1:13We talked about how a lot of these things that happen are common, and so we accept them as
- 1:17normal, but really broke down the myth of accepting that just because it's common and we
- 1:23see our friends and family members going through it, it doesn't mean it has to be our
- 1:27story too.
- 1:28Now today, I wanted to bring Caroline back on so that we could talk more around solutions.
- 1:33So we're gonna talk today around solutions for getting your intimacy back, bringing back
- 1:39spontaneity, whether it's important to be spontaneous with sex or schedule sex, and
- 1:44really look at some of her work on how we solve the problem of this desire mismatch for many
- 1:52couples.
- 1:53So I did introduce her in the last episode, but just to remind you guys, Caroline Hood is a sex
- 1:58and relationship writer, speaker, and consultant.
- 2:00She is the author of Sex Begets Sex and writes the newsletter Desire in Real Life where she
- 2:06really helps to shape relationships and help people understand how to be more effective in
- 2:12their intimate relationships.
- 2:13Thank you again for being here with me today.
- 2:15Thank you.
- 2:16Excited to dig into this part.
- 2:18Yeah.
- 2:18And let's go right to it.
- 2:20So let's start kinda big picture, and we're gonna talk solutions, as I said, but big
- 2:25picture.
- 2:25Talk to us about like spontaneity spontaneity versus scheduling sex.
- 2:30Yeah.
- 2:31What, you know, what are your opinions on each of these?
- 2:33What's important?
- 2:34What really matters?
- 2:35So I don't actually think any of the sex we really ever had was spontaneous.
- 2:42And I think that that's again this we talked about myths in the first in the first part.
- 2:47Right?
- 2:48I think that's another myth that we're falling into, which is like, we never have to schedule
- 2:53or put any intention towards sex.
- 2:55We should just line up, and we should wanna rip each other's clothes off and be done with it.
- 2:59But even if we go back to when we were dating or young or single, like, whatever your story
- 3:05was, you maybe you got together with girlfriends and had drinks at an apartment and
- 3:12went out to a bar and everybody was there at the same time and the music was bumping and the
- 3:18drink specials and the lighting.
- 3:20All of that was curated.
- 3:22Like, you weren't doing that probably on a Monday night.
- 3:24You were doing it on a Saturday night when everybody else was there.
- 3:27So there were all these rituals and and rhythms that went into your sex life when you were
- 3:34single that I think we all perceive in hindsight often as being very spontaneous.
- 3:40When in reality, it was very structured.
- 3:42You would shower.
- 3:43You would think about if you were masturbating before or after.
- 3:45You would schedule dates.
- 3:47All of that was scheduled.
- 3:48We called it a date or we called it going out, but but it was scheduled sex.
- 3:53So there's something that happens in long term relationships where couples go, oh gosh, you
- 3:58know, we can't schedule sex.
- 4:00That's not hot.
- 4:01Sex has to be spontaneous.
- 4:02And and our sex has really always been scheduled.
- 4:07It's always been intentional.
- 4:09It's always been curated.
- 4:11So there's nothing about doing it in a long term relationship that's worse than having done
- 4:17what you did when you were 20.
- 4:19It's just like the constraints are different.
- 4:21Right?
- 4:21The the structures of your life are different.
- 4:23So so that's fine.
- 4:26We have we get to embrace that, and we get to look at scheduling sex as it also builds
- 4:33anticipation.
- 4:34You know, I'm somebody and I think a lot of people are we it's fun to look forward to
- 4:39something.
- 4:40It's not quite as fun to go, oh god.
- 4:43Am I ever gonna have this thing happen again?
- 4:45I hope that it works out.
- 4:47That anticipation is really like, it's really important.
- 4:52So spontaneity is overrated and and I think often like didn't exist at all.
- 4:56Just tell you, it's it's really fun when I get guests on here that with different opinions
- 5:01just from a standpoint of debate, but I find it especially fun when I have people like like
- 5:06yourself that like that are using almost the same language that I do when I'm interviewing
- 5:11around like even the dating example.
- 5:13I've used that so many times and I I couldn't agree more that you know, I think oftentimes we
- 5:19are expecting this this whole thing to be different when when we were actually planning
- 5:25and anticipating and all of that, you know, the entire time.
- 5:28It just I I love when I hear people saying that, like, a similar thing is to me.
- 5:31It's like, wow.
- 5:32This is it almost validates it because Yes.
- 5:35You have come to your the same conclusions from your years of observation that I have, and and
- 5:40I just love that so much.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:42Well and I think there's there's really interesting I don't know how much work you do
- 5:47around this, but with particularly, like, with the kink community, there's so much planning
- 5:54and preparation and conversation and intention around, you know, depending on whatever the
- 6:00case may be or the scene or player, however you orchestrate your particular kink.
- 6:05And and no one is saying, oh, that's not sexy and hot.
- 6:09Usually, the the reverse, which is that it's the most the most pleasurable, the most
- 6:14freeing, the most exciting type of sex, and and it's highly curated.
- 6:20So so I think the quote, you know, more vanilla relationships and and not disparaging that at
- 6:24all.
- 6:25You know, you like what you like, but but more vanilla relationships can certainly benefit
- 6:30from looking at other other sexual communities and the way they sort of orchestrate and curate
- 6:35and build that excitement and anticipation and safety within that.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:39Exactly.
- 6:40I draw a lot of my work and I work on monogamous cup with monogamous couples, but I
- 6:44draw a lot of the the stuff I teach from polyamorous types of relationships.
- 6:50So similar type of stuff.
- 6:51It's like, okay, well, you look at what these other types of relationship styles are doing
- 6:56effectively.
- 6:57And even if like the core of the value system around, you know, say what is hot versus what
- 7:03is not is different, the the principles, you know, actually really apply well from Greek
- 7:09from group to group just like you're finding with kink.
- 7:11Yeah.
- 7:12And I think, you know, the heteronormative couples can learn a lot and you take, for
- 7:17instance, homosexual couples where penetration is is often not something that's strictly
- 7:23solely defined as sex, where in heteronormative structures, it really is.
- 7:28And so so, again, just sort of looking at different structures, I think, is such a good
- 7:32tool to take back to a monogamous heterosexual couple and say, hey.
- 7:37Like, let's learn from these other ways of doing things.
- 7:39It doesn't mean you have to have to behave in that way, but there's certainly sort of nuggets
- 7:44of wisdom and lessons to be learned.
- 7:46Exactly.
- 7:47Let's talk about the readiness fallacy.
- 7:50So what do you advise when couples are just kinda doing that thing around, we're gonna wait
- 7:55for the perfect perfect circumstance and before prioritizing intimacy.
- 7:58And, you know, anybody with kids, you know, particularly knows this, but whether or not you
- 8:02have kids, whether it's dogs, whether it's your career, whether it's visiting your grandma,
- 8:07like, whatever it is, it's so easy to just give at any given day 17,000 different reasons that
- 8:14are keeping us too busy to prioritize intimacy.
- 8:17So, you know, like like, have you looked into it's like, we'll talk about solutions in a
- 8:21second, but I'm also just curious as to have you looked into why this like, where this thing
- 8:27comes from, this readiness fallacy?
- 8:28Like, why are we programmed that we have to wait for all of these circumstances to just
- 8:33spontaneously come together before we start prioritizing this?
- 8:37Well, I think there I think it's connected back to that fallacy of spontaneity.
- 8:42Right?
- 8:42Like the readiness and the spontaneity go hand in hand.
- 8:45So if you've if you've bought into this messaging that that two people's individual
- 8:51libidos and sexual desires are supposed to just magically align and that if you have pure true
- 8:58love that your chemistries will just match.
- 9:01And so you don't need to put any effort toward it.
- 9:04And I would argue the messaging almost tells us that if you do have to put effort toward it,
- 9:09then then it means that your connection is not as good or not as solid.
- 9:14So so unlike, I think, other things in our life where we we value putting attention and time
- 9:19toward it and and we we think that that's a positive thing.
- 9:23I actually think that this sort of societal messaging tells us the reverse, which is that
- 9:28if you have to try it all, then you've then you're not, quote, meant to be.
- 9:35So that's, I think, that's again to like setting up couples to fail.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:40It's an awful fallacy.
- 9:42It's an awful fallacy that is just it is.
- 9:44It's setting couples up to fail and and nobody can live up to that ex you know, that
- 9:48expectation.
- 9:49I just wanna take a quick break to say one of the number one things that leads to a lack or
- 9:55just a slowing of passion in the relationship is thinking that our partner's body and mind
- 10:02and spirit is going to be the same today as tomorrow.
- 10:06So one of the things that happens for so many bodies especially for female bodies is that
- 10:13with time, the pleasure needs change.
- 10:16And we get into those sexual scripts and those habits of doing the same thing over and over
- 10:22and over again, not always realizing that our pleasure body is wanting something else.
- 10:27This creates a lack of passion, a desire, a lack of orgasm, and it's one of the reasons why
- 10:34bedrooms can start to get quieter.
- 10:37I talk about how to fix this and so much more walking you through a step by step guide for an
- 10:46entire year if you want on how to improve your pleasure life.
- 10:50Start with a free trial, stay for a month, stay for the year, make it yours.
- 10:56You'll see all of this and more and how to get get started in the show notes below this video.
- 11:01I hope you will join me in my Hot Monogamy Society.
- 11:05Now, let's get back to our episode.
- 11:08And I want to talk about now solutions, like what can we do from a standpoint of how we
- 11:15prioritize intimacy and how we, you know, work with oftentimes her needing more time than him.
- 11:22Mhmm.
- 11:22You know, of course, it doesn't always work that way, but a lot of times it does.
- 11:25And before we do, just as a reminder for people, one of my favorite ways of actually
- 11:30getting warmed up are our penis and our vulva pumps.
- 11:34And what's so interesting about this to me is that so many people, if they do know about the
- 11:38pumps, they think about them as like last resorts.
- 11:42But these really should look at, in many ways, as just kind of like the warm up.
- 11:47So it's it's really not a fix.
- 11:49I mean, it can be a fix, but it's also a workout.
- 11:51And and there's so much almost taboo around this, but nobody's ashamed of something like a
- 11:56foam roller.
- 11:57And all this really is it's like a foam roller getting our body loosened up for our run.
- 12:02All we're doing is with the with the pump.
- 12:04So we have like the male cylinders and then we have the female counterparts that go over the
- 12:10vulva.
- 12:11And then these are attached to the vacuum.
- 12:14And the vacuum basically then provides suction which brings blood flow to these tissues.
- 12:18So it can help men with performance.
- 12:20It can help men with size, but it also is just helping get that feedback loop going to the
- 12:25brain.
- 12:26And so one of the things too with women in desire is we bring more blood to that area.
- 12:31Well, that's what takes so long to get her warmed up is she has slower acting
- 12:34hemodynamics.
- 12:35It takes longer for blood to get to her juicy bits.
- 12:38So when that happens, when we're using something like that pump, that can actually
- 12:42start to speed up her desire and her blood flow.
- 12:45And if kipples are in a situation where they have to be more hurried for whatever reason and
- 12:50they're trying to close that gap, that can get her prepped up and ready in advance, him
- 12:55prepped up and ready in advance.
- 12:56So it really gets them both warmed up so that if they are in a hurry or not, they can start
- 13:02playing more quickly.
- 13:03And you'll find links to this and coupon codes in the show notes to my favorite company.
- 13:08But anyways, now back to my original question.
- 13:10So what do we do about it?
- 13:11What do we do about it?
- 13:12Well, once we've taken this sort of moral judgment aside and we've said, okay, great.
- 13:17We're gonna focus on this.
- 13:18We're gonna pay attention to it.
- 13:20I think there's some easy things to do.
- 13:22And where couples get trapped is this like, okay.
- 13:25Well, we have to go on this ten day all inclusive vacation and we have to get the
- 13:29babysitter and we have to do all these things.
- 13:31And although that's great and I'm a fan of vacations, intimacy needs to be something
- 13:35that's a regular part of life.
- 13:37It can't be something that you save for the margins.
- 13:40I think that's really, really important.
- 13:41So how are you gonna just invest in it regularly?
- 13:45And there's some easy things that are free, cheap, ready to go.
- 13:49One is one is flirting.
- 13:51Like, flirting is not for the the first time you meet someone.
- 13:55Flirting is for the duration of a relationship.
- 13:58Flirting is for Monday morning, for Tuesday afternoon.
- 14:02It's not something that is just like, okay, the ten minutes before I wanna have sex, I'm gonna
- 14:06kinda put on the charm.
- 14:08Flirting is really easy and it's just I think continuing to show your partner that they are a
- 14:15sexual object of your desire and that you are also a sexual being.
- 14:20People lose that.
- 14:21They and it's understandable.
- 14:23Right?
- 14:23Like, they lose it in the day to day of all of the logistics as of being an adult.
- 14:29And and I understand that.
- 14:31But but these taking your own sexual identity and your partner's sexual identity and, like,
- 14:37putting it on a shelf until that half hour on Saturday night doesn't lend itself to having
- 14:43fun during that half hour on a Saturday night.
- 14:45You have to infuse it throughout.
- 14:47So I think keep flirting or start flirting.
- 14:51Talking about sex outside of the bedroom, talking about it over coffee, over dinner.
- 14:57However, in situations in which it's not fraught and and not in the, like, hey.
- 15:04We need to have a talk sort of setting.
- 15:06But, hey.
- 15:07You know, I was I've been reading this romantic scene novel or, you know, have you been
- 15:11watching that show?
- 15:12Everybody's going wild over these sex scenes.
- 15:14Like, what are you thinking about lately?
- 15:16Man, we've been having sex for twenty years.
- 15:18Is there something you wanna try?
- 15:20You know, keeping it adding that levity back in.
- 15:24I think there's this piece that couples get to sex after a decade or two or longer where sex
- 15:29becomes this this this sort of pressure filled fraud thing.
- 15:34And I like to remind people that it's play.
- 15:38Like, at its at its base level, we are animals.
- 15:41We're rolling around.
- 15:42It's super silly.
- 15:43It's super ridiculous.
- 15:44It should be fun.
- 15:45It should be risk taking.
- 15:47And let's make sure that we maintain that levity in our dynamic.
- 15:52So so flirting, having rituals, prioritizing it, getting off our phones, guess what?
- 15:57We actually all have enough time to have sex.
- 15:59Like, we we do.
- 16:01We really, really do.
- 16:03And so if we're finding that we don't have time, that's where I think we have to dig in
- 16:09and going, okay.
- 16:10Is it that we don't have time or that or that we're putting other things above it?
- 16:15And and and if we are putting other things above it, like, why?
- 16:19And and is that how we want things to be?
- 16:21What do you say, because I think these are great starting tips for people, what do you say
- 16:25to the couple that's like, and even if it's just one person in the couple, that says
- 16:29something like, well, I don't even know how to flirt.
- 16:32Like how does somebody, do you have any advice for a couple around how to start that?
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:37It can be really awkward.
- 16:38So I'm often a big fan of like naming naming the thing that's going on and saying saying to
- 16:46your partner, okay, like we've I love you so much.
- 16:49We've built this beautiful life together and I also miss the sexual part of me, and I miss the
- 16:56sexual dynamic of us that we used to have.
- 16:59And so I'm feeling awkward.
- 17:01I wanna start bringing back in more flirting and more fun, and I'm I'm just letting you
- 17:06know, like, I'm gonna start trying.
- 17:08I don't need I don't know how it's gonna go.
- 17:10I've never been good at this, but I'm gonna try.
- 17:13And so so one, if you're comfortable enough to just kind of name the the awkward elephant in
- 17:19the room, that can lower some tension.
- 17:21But then there are things, you know, it's not you don't need to jump straight to like dirty
- 17:26talk.
- 17:26I think there can be even nonverbal, little touching, grabs of the thigh, a three second
- 17:33kiss instead of the one second peck.
- 17:35Right?
- 17:36So there's there's the actual physical holding hands, anything that bridges some intimacy.
- 17:42And then you can say, you know, oh, hey, babe.
- 17:45You're looking pretty good today.
- 17:46You know, it can just be a compliment.
- 17:48It doesn't need to be it doesn't need to be a huge elaborate sort of scene.
- 17:57Baby steps.
- 17:58Baby steps.
- 17:59Yeah.
- 17:59It's I think it's really good advice.
- 18:01I think sometimes we over complicate simple things as humans in general, we do that and and
- 18:06I think it's really good advice to say, hey, it can start with just comp, you know,
- 18:10complimenting somebody or just naming what you see or naming what you desire.
- 18:14I I wanna wrap up with a final question and then let everybody know how to get a hold of
- 18:19you.
- 18:20And my question is, in your book, Sex Begets Sex, when you were doing your research and
- 18:25putting together everything for that book, what is one thing that you came across that was
- 18:30actually surprising to
- 18:31you?
- 18:31Gosh.
- 18:34There's so many surprising things.
- 18:36I think I think one of the surprising things that I found is there's a lot of women I've
- 18:41spoken with who are in this sort of, like, mid forties, like, children are kinda teenagers or
- 18:47out of the out of the toddler diaper phase.
- 18:50Where at first conversation, many of them are like, I'm fine.
- 18:55I I don't even care.
- 18:56I don't even want him to touch me.
- 18:58Like, ugh.
- 18:59I'm just I'm counting the minutes until he just falls asleep on the couch.
- 19:03The conversations can start there, and then it doesn't take more than five minutes or ten
- 19:10minutes to go, oh, I thought I thought I was totally done with that part of my life and that
- 19:17I was fine, and actually, I'm not.
- 19:19And actually, I really do have this desire, and I want to sleep with my husband, and I wanna
- 19:26have good sex, or maybe I want maybe I wanna be more adventurous than that.
- 19:30So I think there's what's surprising a little bit or or or almost it it confirmed my belief,
- 19:36but it was nice to hear.
- 19:37And I think surprising for the women I spoke with, which is that they felt like things were
- 19:41fine.
- 19:42They felt pretty numb.
- 19:43They felt like, no big deal.
- 19:45And then just peeling back the layers, they went, oh, I still am a sexual being and I
- 19:51actually still do care about this.
- 19:53I think they were surprised by that.
- 19:55Yeah.
- 19:55That makes sense and I'm so curious to hear from from people.
- 19:59If people, you know, wanna comment on this podcast, I'd love to hear from you all around
- 20:04who is thinking about this and thinking about the ideas you as you contemplate what was
- 20:08discussed on these past two podcasts, who feels surprised by maybe having desire in a way that
- 20:14you didn't even realize was still in there?
- 20:16You know, I'd love to hear from you.
- 20:18So thank you so much for all of your wisdom.
- 20:21Thank you for making this so actionable for all of our listeners.
- 20:24I think we have some real good steps that people take.
- 20:27I wanna make sure everybody knows about your book.
- 20:29Like we've mentioned, Sex Begets Sex, that'll be in the show notes.
- 20:33And I know, like we mentioned in the intro, you write this regular newsletter where it's a
- 20:38great way for people to continue to learn from you and stay stay in touch with you.
- 20:43So just tell us a little bit about all of that, and we'll have all those links in in the show
- 20:46notes for everybody.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:47That's great.
- 20:48Thank you.
- 20:48I'm really active on Substack, and all of that's linked to my website and Instagram and
- 20:55that's all desire in real life as you mentioned.
- 20:57So if you go at desire in real life, you'll find me, Caroline Hood.
- 21:02And I think I'm just kind of constantly trying to pick at these myths, pick at these notions
- 21:09that people bring into relationships and go, okay.
- 21:12Is that really serving me?
- 21:13Is that really serving us as a couple?
- 21:16Like, we get to be sexy throughout our lifespan and throughout a long term relationship.
- 21:22And so I'm you know, DMs are open, all of that.
- 21:26I'm really here just to support and to, know, affirm people and give some guidance.
