Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Somewhere along the way, we were fed the story that midlife is the beginning of the end.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It is a decline.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: But when I look at the women that I admire most, the strongest, wisest, most grounded women, are not in their 20s or 30s.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: They are in midlife and beyond.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And in my opinion, midlife is a mindset.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: It's not a number.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I think we've been telling the wrong story about this season of life.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I believe that midlife is not a crisis, even though that is the main terminology that we would all think of.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: If you said midlife, the word crisis would just follow it, right?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: But I believe it's actually a crossroads instead, a moment where you stop living on autopilot and you start asking yourself, what actually matters about this life?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: A season that invites you to engage with your life more intentionally.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: That perspective has been reinforced me recently when I've been reading this book called Learning to Love Midlife by Chip Conley.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And he talks about midlife not as a breakdown, but as a powerful transition, a time when wisdom and clarity and purpose begin to take shape in our lives.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So today I want to talk about what I believe are the five best things about midlife and why this season is not a decline, but instead an opportunity.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Midlife Glow Up Podcast, where we simplify fitness, nutrition, and healthy habits for women over 40.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I'm Joan Dandano, your midlife health and wellness coach.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And if you are ready to feel strong, consistent, and confident in this season of life, you are in the right place, my friend.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Before we go any further, I want to talk about age and how our perception of it has changed over the years.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you've seen the reel or meme or whatever it is going around Instagram and TikTok, but it's about the Golden Girls.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And when that show aired back in the 80s, those women were in their 50s, but they were portrayed as old, like nursing home old.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: This is the end of the road, old, gray hair, glasses, old.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: We absorbed that story, or at least I did, when we were younger, without even realizing it.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: 50 felt like ancient.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Midlife felt like it must be the beginning of the end.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: But here we are now, rewriting that script in real time.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Because age is no longer the defining factor.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Mindset is.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: To me, midlife isn't really about a number at all.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: It's a way of engaging with life.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I have clients in their late 60s and their early 70s, and they inspire me constantly.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: They're curious, they're open, they want to learn, they want to feel strong, they want to move well, and they want to continue improving their lives.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: They don't see personal development or self-growth as something that ends just because you hit a new decade.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: They take responsibility for their choices.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: They have agency over how they feel and how they live.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And honestly, I look at them and I think, that is who I want to be when I grow up.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I see that same mindset modeled in my own life with my mom.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: She exercises every day and she has since I can remember.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I attended aerobics classes with her back in the 80s and 90s.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Um, I would walk with her and she still walks miles and miles a day.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Her step count trumps mine most days of the week.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: She cooks nourishing food all the time, every day, always in the kitchen, always creating something new with fresh ingredients.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But the other thing that she does that I think is so powerful is that she does crossword puzzles every day.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: She plays Scrabble, sometimes against herself, just to train her brain, to keep her brain sharp.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And that is, doesn't matter how old she is.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: She's pushing 80, man.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: She's not old because her intention is to care for her body.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And that has actually nothing to do with her age, nothing to do with how old she is, but it's about her intention behind her action to stay young, to stay nimble, to stay curious, to stay open, to stay active.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: When we were younger, at least I'll speak for myself, I felt like I had all the time in the world.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Old felt so far away.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Health felt automatic and like taken for granted.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Often, I think in our younger years, we feel invincible.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But midlife brings this perspective, not in necessarily a scary way, but just in a clarifying way that we, most of us, about this stage of life in this season, we have lost loved ones to cancer, unexpected illnesses, and we can see clearly how quickly life can change.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And at this stage, we we understand something deeply that without our health, everything else becomes harder or even impossible.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Our energy, our independence, our freedom, our presence, our time with loved ones.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: If we don't have our health, none of those other things are possible or attainable.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And health, again, doesn't really even take into account how we look.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: It's the foundation that allows us to participate fully in our lives and show up for the people that we love.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Time becomes our most valuable currency.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And in midlife, we stop taking that for granted.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So when I pause here and speak directly to a very specific woman listening, maybe this is you.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: You understand all of this logically.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You know that taking care of yourself matters.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: You know that your health is your foundation for everything else.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: You know that if you want to be a good mom, wife, grandma someday, daughter, friend, that the best thing that you can do is take care of your one precious body.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: You're not careless, you're not lazy, you're not ignoring your health.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And yet actually prioritizing yourself still feels really hard.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: You know what to do, but you have spent decades being the one who shows up for everyone else, the one who keeps things running, the one who puts her needs at the bottom of the list.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: So when it comes time to carve out space for your workouts, for your healthy meals, for your routines, it feels optional, it feels almost indulgent, or like something that can just wait.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: It can be on the back burner for a little bit longer.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: But here's the truth.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And I want to say this in a way that is gentle and empathetic.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Like I get it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: But your health is not in competition with your love for others.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It's actually what sustains it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Taking care of yourself is not selfish.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It's actually stewardship.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And when you choose to care for the one body that you get, your one precious body that allows you to show up with energy, to stay patient and present, to keep up with your kids and your active lifestyle, and to remain independent as long as you can.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: You don't take care of yourself instead of loving your people.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: You take care of yourself because you love them.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And that is where routine becomes everything because motivation will fade.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It is unreliable.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Willpower shows up sometimes, but it also is fickle.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Time never magically appears.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: We don't just get extra of it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: But what changes things is having a simple, realistic routine that removes the decision fatigue and makes health part of not just what you do sometimes, but part of who you are.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Not something that you have to negotiate every day, but something that you just do.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So Chip Conley is the author of Learning to Love Midlife.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: And I love his perspective on midlife.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: He says, midlife is when we stop chasing more and we start chasing meaning.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And that shift from more to meaning is really powerful because I believe that midlife is one of the most meaningful seasons of life because we're no longer careless with our time.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: We're no longer casual about our health.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And we're finally wise enough to be intentional with the time that we have.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So that brings me to what I believe, and what I want to share today are the five best things about this stage of life, midlife.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: The first one is you know yourself better than ever.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know about you, but I have loved this journey of self-discovery.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh my gosh, I just never even slowed down long enough to discover myself.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: But you know now what drains you.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: You know what fuels you.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: You know what brings you joy.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: You know what frustrates the heck out of you.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: You know what your body tolerates and what it doesn't.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: You stop outsourcing decisions to trends or other people and you start trusting your own inner knowing and your own experience.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: And this discernment is powerful.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And the power of knowing isn't just awareness.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: In midlife, you actually use what you know now to make better decisions for yourself.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So you stop forcing yourself into routines that just don't fit your life.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: You stop following plans that ignore your season and that really honor your energy and your reality of what your life is like.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: You get to stop overriding your body's signals in the name of productivity or perfection.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Knowing yourself means that you can start building routines that honor yourself instead of fight against yourself.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: It means that you choose movement that feels supportive, not like punishment.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: You can choose food that nourishes you instead of restricting yourself.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: You can choose schedules and boundaries that protect your energy.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: And maybe most importantly of all, knowing yourself means that you can trust yourself.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: You've lived enough to listen inward and act accordingly.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Like what are your values?
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: What are what is the most important thing to you?
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And how can you align your behaviors with that?
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Midlife to me is incredibly empowering.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Because when you use what you know to guide your decisions, consistency gets easier.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Habits feel more natural.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Taking care of yourself stops feeling like something that you should do and starts feeling like something that you're aligned with.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Self-trust is the foundation that everything else is built upon.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, the second reason that I think midlife is awesome is that you care less about other people's approval.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: You stop caring as much about what people think of you, if they're gonna like you, and you care more about being in alignment with what really is important to you.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: You choose your boundaries over burnout.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: You choose your own personal peace over people pleasing.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And what this does for us, it's not just emotional freedom, but it actually gives you like practical advantages in life.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: When you stop needing the approval of other people, you actually reclaim energy and space and time.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: When you say no without over-explaining, I'm sure you've heard this before, but no is a complete sentence, then you stop filling your calendar with obligations that drain you and you stop apologizing for having your own needs.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: This is like so me.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: If I could go back to my younger self in my 20s, in my 30s, my early 40s, gosh, I would tell her, stop apologizing for your needs.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Stop over-explaining everything.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: When we do this, we open up time for rest, for movement, for meals that nourish you, for routines that support your health.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Caring less about approval gives you energy back because you're no longer performing, you're no longer managing everybody else's expectations, you're no longer carrying guilt for choices that are actually just good for you.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter what other people think about them.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: That emotional weight lifts.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And when it does, your nervous system settles, your decision making improves, and your body feels safer, more comfortable.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: And maybe most importantly, caring less about approval, other people's approval, actually gives you agency over your own life.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: You stop asking, is this okay?
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Is this allowed?
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And you start asking, is this in alignment with what I care about?
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: You choose workouts because they serve your body, not because they impress somebody else.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: You eat in a way that supports your health, not because it fits a diet or a trend, but because your body feels good.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Your body talks to you all day long.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we just have to slow down enough to listen to it.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And you build routines that fit your life, not somebody else's highlight reel.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: This is where midlife confidence becomes just grounding.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: It's not performative, but it's deeply rooted in self-respect.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And when your choices come from self-respect instead of approval or trying to keep up with somebody else's idea of what this should look like, then consistency becomes way more possible because you're no longer trying to earn anything or do it somebody else's way.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: You're simply taking care of yourself.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And let me say what I mean by that.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: So earlier in life, often our health was about short-term outcomes, quick fixes, fast results, this new diet, this new trendy workout, pushing harder to get leaner, to get smaller, to get back on track.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: But with midlife and the wisdom that we have, we start asking different questions.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Instead of how fast can I change this?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Can I get to this certain dress size or this certain number on the scale by my summer vacation?
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And you start asking, how long can I sustain this?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Instead of what will get me results right now, you ask, what will support me for the next decade or two?
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Playing the long game means shifting your focus from intensity to consistency.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: It means choosing strength training, not for aesthetics alone, but for bone density, for muscle mass, for balance, for independence, for being able to travel, for being able to keep up with your kids and your grandkids.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: It means prioritizing protein and nourishment so that your body can recover and rebuild and stay resilient and stay strong.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: It means valuing sleep and recovery and mobility just as much as your workouts.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The long game is about protecting and creating your future self.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: It's about building a body that allows you to travel and play and work and show up fully without pain or exhaustion or fear that you're going to hurt yourself.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: The long game doesn't require doing more.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: It actually, a lot of times, requires doing less, but more consistently.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Fewer extreme, all or nothing plans and more routines that you can return to even when life is busy.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: This is where midlife health becomes an investment, not a quick fix.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: So every walk, every time you lift weights, every time you eat a healthy, nourishing breakfast is a deposit into your future quality of life.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And once you see your health through that lens, the guilt starts to go away.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Taking away, you're no longer taking away time from others.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: You're ensuring that you'll be able to show up for them strong, capable, independent for years to come.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: That is what the long game gives you.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And I think midlife is the time when we start to really realize that.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, number four, the best thing about midlife is that you have this incredible perspective.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: You can look back and you can start to look forward.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: You've lived enough life to know how quickly things can change.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: You've seen what happens when health is taken for granted.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: You understand now that feeling good isn't vanity.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: It's actually imperative to having the life that you want.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And with that perspective, you stop postponing the things that matter most.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: You stop telling yourself that you'll focus on your health later.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: You'll stop waiting for the perfect season or the perfect plan or for more time.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: And you realize that starting imperfectly now is way better than waiting indefinitely.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: It's clarity.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: It's choosing what matters while you still have a chance to fully enjoy it.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: You've lived enough life now to understand that good health is not guaranteed.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: You've watched people lose their mobility, their independence, or run out of time far earlier than they had expected.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: And you know now that feeling strong means that you can lift the grocery bags and you can walk the stairs and you can play in the water without hesitation.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Feeling energized means that you can be present instead of feel depleted.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And feeling well means that you're not sidelined from your life.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: So there is this sense of urgency, not like a fear-based panic or pressure, but it's this urgency that is wisdom-based.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Midlife gives you the chance to choose what matters to you.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: You stop postponing your health because you realize now that waiting is gonna cost you more than starting imperfectly today.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: So we're not feeling fear-based urgency, we're not feeling anxiety about this, but we're feeling this wisdom-based urgency that's gonna help us create momentum as we move forward.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And the final thing that I think is the best thing about midlife is, and this is probably the most important in my opinion, it is your chance to choose intentionally who you are becoming.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: You're no longer becoming somebody by accident.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: In our 20s, in our 30s, maybe even early 40s, we were just so on autopilot doing the things we've always done.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And maybe we arrived where we are today just by happenstance.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: In our earlier life, so much of who we were was shaped by the roles that we played, the expectations that we were trying to live up to, and just the momentum of the habits that we had on autopilot.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: We were just responding or adapting or getting through, surviving.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: But midlife allows us to slow down and ask a different kind of question.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Not what's expected of me, not what am I supposed to do, but what do I want my life to feel like?
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And you get to decide now how you want to feel in your body.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: I know I want to feel strong and capable and energized and present.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: I want to feel grounded.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And you get to decide what you want to be able to do in the next decades.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: I know I want to move with confidence and independence and without fear that my body's not gonna hold up.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: You get to decide how you want to live, whether you want to be rushed and harried and frazzled, or if you want to be intentional and aligned and relaxed.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: This isn't about reinventing yourself overnight, but it's about choosing the direction, the trajectory of where you're going.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: And it's built in our daily decisions.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: So how do you actually do this?
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: How do you actually create the life that you want?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: It's by the little choices that you make day in and day out that add up over time to equal your lifestyle.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: So it's the walk instead of scrolling your phone.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: It's the strength session instead of pushing snooze on your alarm.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: It is the high protein breakfast that you ate instead of the latte through the drive-thru.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Every time you keep a promise to yourself, these are votes for the woman that you are becoming.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: And here's the thought that I keep circling back to.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: I have a hunch.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I don't, this is just an observation, but I'm guessing that somewhere in our late 60s, early 70s, maybe mid-70s, we stop measuring ourselves and our success by the mirror.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: And not because we don't care how we look, but because we have moved on, we've graduated to something better.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We care more and we measure more our capability, our freedom, our connection, our comfort.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Midlife is the bridge to that season.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: So what you choose now, how you move, how you nourish yourself, how you care for your body, it determines how free and full your life feels later.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: And this is why I think midlife is.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Just so powerful.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Not because it's easy, but because it's intentional.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: And this is where you stop just kind of drifting through your life and you start actually designing what it looks like.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Midlife isn't about holding on to who you were, it's about becoming who you were always meant to be with intention, with self-respect, with strength.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: And that is why I believe habits and routines and support matter so much in this season of life.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: If this episode resonated with you, it's because part of you was already ready to choose yourself more intentionally.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: And just a reminder: you don't need more information.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: You don't need more motivation or more dedication.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: What you need is clarity, consistency, and support.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Before we wrap up today, I want to quickly recap everything that we talked about.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Midlife isn't a decline, but I really think it's an opportunity.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: But again, it's a mindset.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: It's not about how old you are or even how old you feel.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: It's about having hope for the future.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: So I talked about today five best things about midlife.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: So I want to recap those for you.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: First, in midlife, you know yourself better than you ever have.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And you can finally use that knowing to make choices that really support your health and your life and live in alignment with your values.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Second, you care less about approval, which gives you back your time and your energy, and it gives you the freedom to make decisions that are aligned instead of performative.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Third, you're ready to play the long game.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: You want to build strength, create consistency, find routines that support not just how you look today, but how you want to live in the years ahead.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Fourth, you gain this incredible perspective that helps you to realize that it's time to stop postponing the things that matter most.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And you understand that feeling good isn't about vanity, but it's actually giving you access to your life today and helping you to create that dream life that you dream about.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: And finally, midlife gives you the chance to choose who you become next.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: You're no longer becoming by accident, but rather you're designing your next chapters intentionally.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: If this episode resonated with you, make sure that you're following show and subscribe to the podcast so that you don't miss future episodes.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty excited about next week's episode.
