- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another episode of the 90s
- 0:08podcast Child. This is episode 65 is it How
- 0:11crazy is that is amazing motoring.
- 0:14Today we are bringing a topic that we have planned for ages.
- 0:18We are going to be talking about some of the best sports
- 0:20documentaries out there and what we think of them as they were
- 0:26because there are some that are quite old, but also like where
- 0:28that's all going now I think is. In the making?
- 0:31Yeah, it. Is, but first of all, yeah,
- 0:35what's what's been going on? What's what's been happening in
- 0:37the world of fitness? What's been happening in your
- 0:39life? I know you're trying to target a
- 0:41specific area for me to talk about, which was my 10K race.
- 0:45Yeah, I am right. Yeah, yeah.
- 0:49Yeah, I mean it, it was, it was good.
- 0:50It was last Sunday. I don't know if I spoke about
- 0:54the route or the event. I must have spoken about the
- 0:56actual event. You've spoken about the event
- 0:58because it was in the middle of nowhere, right?
- 0:59But I think the most interesting thing for those that don't
- 1:03follow Charles on Strava, I would recommend it because he
- 1:06chooses some of the most interesting running routes in
- 1:09races. This.
- 1:09Was this was nothing to do with me?
- 1:11This was event organization, but this was the inaugural Woolwich
- 1:1410K, which was, I mean, it was something in itself.
- 1:19It was actually a lovely event, lots of nice people, and it was
- 1:21well organized, but it was no soccer.
- 1:24Any shortage 10K, I'll tell you that much for free.
- 1:27And I was really excited because it was in Woolwich, it was down
- 1:30the Thames Path. In my head.
- 1:31It's going to be super flat. This is going to be a good time
- 1:33for me to set a fast, fast. 10K. In the middle of the race, they
- 1:38just run you up a hill for no reason and it's like it's so
- 1:42steep. It's like a spiral up this hill
- 1:44just to go back down. I I before you actually messaged
- 1:47me about it, I obviously went and looked at your Strava.
- 1:50I knew you were done. So I went and looked and I saw
- 1:53in the middle there was something weird going on.
- 1:55And I was like, oh, clearly the Strava map's like fucked up.
- 1:58Yeah, It's just like a weird blip.
- 1:59And sometimes it does that. But I zoomed in and it was a
- 2:01perfect spiral, the perfect. And I was like, what?
- 2:04What? How does this work in a court?
- 2:06How does that look like with people running past each other?
- 2:08And then I looked up where that was and it's just a.
- 2:11Mound A man made literally. And it's like, yeah, it looked
- 2:16really weird. They were just like make sure
- 2:18you run on the left. Oh wow, so they didn't even
- 2:21divide the road? No, you just went and then came
- 2:23straight right down. So you actually had to like turn
- 2:25around at the top and then come. Down by divide the road.
- 2:27I think you're imagining this event to be slightly larger than
- 2:30it was. OK, so it was a there were 100.
- 2:32132 people running, so it was like, I'm sure there's thousands
- 2:37that run the Saucony. So this one's slightly smaller
- 2:40scale, and as a result I came third.
- 2:43You came third. The podium finished Baby I.
- 2:45Was going to say, did you get a bronze medal?
- 2:49Do you get podium? Well, I got a medal, but
- 2:52everyone got a medal and a banana and a bottle of water.
- 2:54Oh wow, took care of you and your.
- 2:56I'm going to have to show you after this the photo of the
- 2:58registration because it's literally behind a Sports Center
- 3:01and someone has handwritten the sign registration here on a on
- 3:06it on like an old cardboard box and just slapped it off on the
- 3:09wall. So it was like it was it was low
- 3:11key. But I'm hoping this this could
- 3:12be the start of great things for the Woolwich tank.
- 3:15Do you know what? That sounds like a secret invite
- 3:17only event that you podiumed in so.
- 3:20And now when people say how does it how did it go?
- 3:23I just would say what I came third and no one then asks me
- 3:26what my time was they just to see my rapid.
- 3:28Yeah, true. Yeah, it was, it was, it was, it
- 3:31was just over like 30 odd minutes.
- 3:33So you know. Somewhere just above like the
- 3:35the high 20s. But generally speaking,
- 3:37considering the fact that there was just the roguest, spiral and
- 3:41hill in the course, happy with the time you did get.
- 3:44I wanted to break 40, yeah, which is yeah, which I didn't,
- 3:49but I I don't want to blame it on the hill because I was
- 3:53struggling anyway. I think I would have struggled
- 3:54to break 40 even if it was a flat course.
- 3:56So on another day I probably had better legs and could have gone
- 4:00a bit faster. But overall it was a good
- 4:02experience and was kind of just an ad hoc.
- 4:04Let's see what my 10K is at as I now enter full time high works
- 4:09training for London. I mean, is actually quite close.
- 4:14I'm going to say between like 12 and 15 weeks, Yeah, it's quite
- 4:17scary. I think 12 weeks is September
- 4:2015th. Yeah.
- 4:21And by think I know. And remind me is that if your
- 4:24your pro lows, your pro solo debut?
- 4:26Debut. Yeah, Big.
- 4:28One feeling happy about that or like.
- 4:30I'm actually super excited. I'm I'm trying to like no
- 4:34expectation. It's the first time I've raced
- 4:36in the pro category. I want to go and enjoy it and
- 4:40yeah, don't put any pressure on it, but I've I've within saying
- 4:44that I've got the most rigid training routine from now until
- 4:48then, so if I don't perform I'll be severely disappointed.
- 4:51Oh, nice. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:52Cool. But there's no pressure.
- 4:53Low bar, low bar, well of of things that have been going on
- 4:58in terms of running where people have achieved certain times.
- 5:00This week I'm going to let you introduce this news because
- 5:05World Record has been brilliant. Sabusio Quebecca, I think that's
- 5:09what you're going to do, trying to trip me up on that.
- 5:11No, no, I was just checking to see if you were going to say it
- 5:13right as I was obviously going to say it, obviously.
- 5:15But no. What?
- 5:16What a man. He's 100 kilometres in under 6
- 5:20hours, which for those of you that can't do the mental maths
- 5:23right now, that's an average of 3 minutes, 36 per kilometre for
- 5:28100 kilometres straight. Crazy.
- 5:29Yeah. There's there's so many things
- 5:31to unpick here and I don't, I don't really know where to
- 5:33start. The first thing is that it was
- 5:35like it was so low key and it just like it popped up on social
- 5:40media. I think I'd heard of it.
- 5:42I don't even think I'd heard of the the attempt before it was it
- 5:45it'd been announced. So I.
- 5:46Don't know when the official attempt was happening.
- 5:48What I saw on social media was that Adidas was working on this
- 5:51project and it seemed very similar to like Nike trying to
- 5:54do the that sort of thing. But I, I saw it and I saw a guy
- 5:58who is the current world record holder.
- 6:00I think he had in about 6 hours, 5 minutes saying I'm pretty
- 6:03aware that my record's going to get broken, but.
- 6:07Because he ran it as well. Yeah, He was one of the Yeah.
- 6:09So he was like, but I'm hoping it is going to be me that does
- 6:11it. So that's what I saw was a bit
- 6:14of hype for it and I was like, oh, I wonder when this is going
- 6:16down. Like I know it has to be soon
- 6:18because they wouldn't want to, Adidas wouldn't want to announce
- 6:20it and then someone else beat them to it.
- 6:23But like it's got to be coming up in the next few months.
- 6:25Yeah, it was like 3 days later, yeah.
- 6:27Yeah, and. I had no idea what was going on.
- 6:29Amazing like the just the like the physical feat is just
- 6:34extraordinary in itself 336 for for just under 6 hours like
- 6:39that's. I think the maddest thing about
- 6:41that is I'm thinking of that as like 336 insane speed to be
- 6:46running. But if that's your average
- 6:47considering towards the back end he's obviously likely to have
- 6:49tailed off, that means for the most part I would imagine at
- 6:53least a marathon. He's probably running sub 3:30.
- 6:57It's crazy and and he's also having to then take on fuel,
- 7:01which obviously you would in a marathon, but you're doing more
- 7:04fueling over the course of that amount of time.
- 7:07It's just like more components to go wrong and potential
- 7:11pitfalls. But I hope that because again, I
- 7:16knew we were going to talk about this today.
- 7:17I've been researching it and looking up about it and just
- 7:20finding as much as I can about it.
- 7:22There isn't all that much of it out there.
- 7:23Like Adidas have this detailed breakdown on the equipment, how
- 7:27they developed the shoe, how they developed the suits that
- 7:30they were wearing, who was running.
- 7:31But there's not all that much other than like a one page
- 7:34article on Adidas that I could find really as an official
- 7:37source. There's no like videos on
- 7:39YouTube. There's there's one interview
- 7:41with with him after he raced, which is like, and that's it.
- 7:46That's all we do. This point towards this points
- 7:48towards the fact that there has to be some sort of big release
- 7:50coming out of all that. And what I hope So what I want,
- 7:53yeah. And because what I want to see
- 7:54from that is does that whether it was 5 hours, 5756 minutes
- 8:00than it was that he managed to do that in, does that include
- 8:05like over six hours? I imagine he had to pee like
- 8:08maybe he just did. It's a good question.
- 8:09Paula. It just went on the go.
- 8:12Maybe he had to shit as well, but like, did all of that
- 8:15happen? Within that time, yeah, 'cause
- 8:17I. I mean to me pre advance it
- 8:22doesn't count if they didn't count stop time.
- 8:24Oh no, it was. It can't have been like a.
- 8:27Land time. They won't have done that.
- 8:29No, they can't So, but it was like a perf.
- 8:31You saw the course, It's like a perfect.
- 8:33Ring yes. And interestingly, I was just
- 8:35making sure I was aware of this from the time we first mentioned
- 8:38this. He would have done over a
- 8:40kilometer. Yeah.
- 8:42But he'd just do that 100 times, which is mad that he's able to
- 8:45run a commodity in that time and it just.
- 8:47Also, like the guys who ran with him, because it was a, there was
- 8:50a team that they'd worked with all of them, they all had
- 8:53specific shoes, etcetera, etcetera.
- 8:55The specifications to their running.
- 8:57Imagine running a six hour, which would have been the
- 9:01previous record and you're still not as fast as this guy.
- 9:04Yeah. And also Cebusio when I saw this
- 9:08this happened I went on his Instagram account like 2800
- 9:11followers what the hell? But then, but then.
- 9:14But now he's got. But he's he's only got 15 K.
- 9:16The guy is like a superhuman. He needs more followers.
- 9:20Yeah, well, although when I went on to his page, all I saw was
- 9:23that the. Repost of him.
- 9:25Not not even that, but it it was within like the the most recent
- 9:2920 posts had come out within about half an hour and he just
- 9:31collaborated with. Yeah, yeah, that's and I was
- 9:33like. And overseas, all the pages.
- 9:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's immediately the same photo.
- 9:36Yeah, incredible. But I, I imagine off the back of
- 9:38this, he obviously is going to get that sort of coverage and
- 9:43following, especially if he continues to.
- 9:45But I think that's always tough because like we said, we only
- 9:47knew about it three days before. If we knew more about the
- 9:50athletes and the build up to it, then they would have built a bit
- 9:52more of a following. But I can't remember which book
- 9:54it was, but one of the two books you recommended really talks
- 9:59about how running is the escape for some people out of, you
- 10:04know, the life that they grew up in.
- 10:06That could potentially be like a Canon event and should be a
- 10:09Canon event for his like legacy for sure.
- 10:12But it's just a bit, it's a bit tough because like, where do you
- 10:15go from there? But you can run six.
- 10:17You can run a sub six hour 100K on a perfect course.
- 10:20But like most 100K distances that are done are like ultras
- 10:23and ultra running's a totally different.
- 10:25Ball game. This is the and I'm glad you
- 10:27bring it up because I, I want to talk about that as well, because
- 10:29Ultra running is like, unless you're in it, you, you have no
- 10:34idea. It's like so elusive and, and so
- 10:36interesting and there's lots of characters and different people
- 10:38and records and courses and just things that are so alien to
- 10:42people who aren't in the Ultra running community, which is
- 10:45really fascinating. So, yeah, I mean, he's been on
- 10:49this perfect course in Italy. If you take him out into the the
- 10:53middle of the canyons in in America and you're running up
- 10:55and down over rocks and you have a crew with you and you have to
- 10:58do your own fueling strategy and whatever, it's a whole different
- 11:01ball game. So there is like a difference
- 11:04between, in my mind, like he's the peak of performance for like
- 11:09going fast for an ultra. But is that conducive to being
- 11:14peak performance for someone who can just keep plugging away,
- 11:16plugging away, plugging away? Not to take away from the fact
- 11:19that the top ultras runners are also rapid.
- 11:22Yeah, 1 the sort of way that I look at it in another sporting
- 11:26perspective is, is he, is he a NASCAR car?
- 11:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like built for going in a
- 11:33perfect loop basically for a very long time endlessly.
- 11:38But then as soon as you put like a chicane out there, it hits the
- 11:41wall like they can't do anything.
- 11:44Is that really where that niche is becoming?
- 11:46Is that potentially something that he might do this one, break
- 11:50that record and then just never go anywhere close to it again?
- 11:52Because he's like, actually marathon running is where the
- 11:54money is for me, yeah. It's it's it's really
- 11:57interesting and I'd be, I'd be interested to know and I hope
- 12:00that's, I hope Adidas do release a documentary about it.
- 12:03I'm sure they will. But how they selected the
- 12:06runners, how they selected him, what his background is,
- 12:09etcetera, etcetera in in running and is I assume it must be long
- 12:13distance road running, but yeah, it's there.
- 12:17The kind of the the parallel between actually running ultra
- 12:21marathons? Or do you just stay on the road
- 12:23like you say? Yeah.
- 12:24And I think just to again, it is wild that someone can run 336
- 12:29for that long. Yeah.
- 12:30But if we're talking about and this just re emphasizes the
- 12:34marathon world record, take 34 seconds per kilometre off that
- 12:39and still do it 42 and a bit times in a row.
- 12:42And then you get the marathon world record when you're when
- 12:45you're talking margins that big at that level, it's just mental
- 12:51monumental. Yeah, honestly, it's and I, we
- 12:55obviously in around more than than most people because we do a
- 12:59lot of training and we're surrounded by people who do a
- 13:02lot of running. And I'm in a fortunate position
- 13:05to know lots of fast marathon runners, but even a fast
- 13:09marathon runner who operates in similar circles to us, who has a
- 13:13day job and basically marathon runs for fun, but is really
- 13:17bloody good at it. They might run like a anywhere
- 13:20between a two hour 20 and a two hour 30 and you go, that is
- 13:23unbelievable. Like that is incredible.
- 13:26But you can't take anything away from that achievement.
- 13:29People running two hours 3, like low two hours.
- 13:32It's just like, I don't know how how you get there and it is.
- 13:36It's just like. Crazy 'cause like if you
- 13:38actually literally took their race and put it to if you just
- 13:42turned their current marathon speed and put it as a 1
- 13:45kilometer race, the differential between that two hour 3 and that
- 13:48two hour 30 when two hour 30 is still an unbelievable time.
- 13:51Unbelievable is a massive gap across 1 kilometer.
- 13:54Yeah, Let alone like when you think about like running up in
- 13:57the distance. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:59But this kind of all ties into the theme of today's podcast,
- 14:03where Charles actually yesterday, which is really where
- 14:07the idea of today's broadcasters come from, sent me.
- 14:11What is a YouTube documentary like?
- 14:14You should watch this. This could be cool to talk
- 14:16about. And it essentially follows a guy
- 14:18who is certainly going to be nicknamed the Destroyer, full
- 14:22name Hans Troyer, sick name. That's unreal.
- 14:25Who? We.
- 14:26That we. Didn't practice like you know,
- 14:27we didn't essentially without trying to do too much in the way
- 14:33of spoilers and maybe it's just best to say if you really,
- 14:36really want to watch it and you want to watch it was a good
- 14:38idea, just go watch it now before you listen to the rest of
- 14:40this. But this kid effectively, and
- 14:43that's how he's referred to in this short documentary, just
- 14:47burst on the scene with no regard for Ultra running at all.
- 14:51Like he just decided to rock up and be sick at it one day.
- 14:56And then it was a bit of a journey over the fact that he
- 15:00wasn't that experienced and made quite a few mistakes.
- 15:02But there's so much at all. We're here.
- 15:03So you kick us off with this and I'll, I'll follow your lead on
- 15:07things because I have things to weigh in on that happened
- 15:09through his journey. Well, I was it's it's a kind of
- 15:12that fascinating thing where there's so much about ultra
- 15:16endurance and ultra racing that just you, you don't know or
- 15:19understand. And even watching this
- 15:21documentary, it follows hands, but you don't actually really
- 15:24get too much of an insight into anyone else in the community or
- 15:27whatever. But I mean, it's, it's a
- 15:30masterpiece in marketing because basically what it is, it's it's
- 15:33a sponsorship video. It's like his sponsors.
- 15:36And I think it's Hyperlite, which is like a performance
- 15:38supplement that you take during a race and follows the the fact
- 15:43that he's unsponsored and they message him on Strava obviously,
- 15:48and go, do you have a nutrition sponsor?
- 15:50Like he, he must be so good. He must have loads of sponsors.
- 15:53He's like, no, I don't have any sponsors.
- 15:55Unless you have zeros. And they're like, what's going
- 15:57on? Let's work together.
- 15:58And it's, it's, it's a really cool partnership because, and
- 16:02again, like, I'm just going to spoil it.
- 16:05He, he, he, he in this, in his second race that he goes and
- 16:09runs. He runs himself like into the
- 16:11ground to the point where he's then in hospital for 12 days
- 16:16after the race with severe abdomyolysis myelosis, however
- 16:19you pronounce it. And essentially like has I think
- 16:24his brother at one point they interview him, they go Hans, you
- 16:28know, you're literally that guy who can run further than his
- 16:32mind can, can kind of stop him. His mind can push his body
- 16:36further but his body knows he can run, which is like so
- 16:38unusual and I don't know if that is actually true, but like he
- 16:42has the ability to run a long time very quickly well.
- 16:45What was really interesting, but literally based off like what
- 16:48happened to me 2-3 months ago, I was watching this and they were
- 16:51talking like, oh, we don't really see him fuelling.
- 16:53And I was like, Oh no, here we go.
- 16:55Like here we go. I remember this.
- 16:57I remember just refusing water and then they he crosses the
- 17:02line having won and then they like, Oh no, he didn't win.
- 17:05No, he didn't win. He came tenth.
- 17:07He was really disappointed still.
- 17:09Like this was in his first year of like native ultra running.
- 17:11So he gets in the car, they start driving away and then they
- 17:14turn around and come back to the event so they can go and see
- 17:17like a medic and he goes for a piss basically.
- 17:20And it's like Coca-Cola coloured.
- 17:22And I was like, oh shit. Like I remember that.
- 17:26Obviously I took the decision that I'd be fine and then like
- 17:30watching that documentary, I'm like God, like maybe I shouldn't
- 17:33have done that. But then at the same time I
- 17:36obviously didn't run. Those levels for the duration.
- 17:39Like I I done a one hour and a bit event.
- 17:41He had run I think another 20 miles from when he lost actually
- 17:46filled himself, which is like totally different.
- 17:48We're talking like an hour and a half, couple of hours.
- 17:50It was like 100K, wasn't it? Yeah, so so.
- 17:53He had done a completely different event, but then seeing
- 17:56the result of that was like, for me, I was watching it.
- 18:00I was like, this is so dangerous, like hospitalized.
- 18:03He was there for a while, and when?
- 18:05You when when they're explaining the the symptoms and what
- 18:08happens when you have rhabdomyolysis because your
- 18:11kidneys essentially just stop any sort of ability to remove
- 18:17waste product. There's just random waste fluid
- 18:21in your body and it can't go anywhere.
- 18:23It literally like starts sitting on the lungs and like filling up
- 18:25it like you can die from it. So it's like exercise induced
- 18:30and it's, it's really dangerous. So I don't know if there's a
- 18:35like a helpline or something. I don't know what I'm trying to
- 18:37do here, but it has. If you have symptoms, I'll
- 18:39definitely go and see the specialist.
- 18:41Again, so so just fire off quickly symptoms.
- 18:43You feel light headed, you look pale after an event and you feel
- 18:48like you've got no energy. And then you realize you haven't
- 18:50pissed or done more than that the entire time or for quite a
- 18:54long time. Realistically, depending on how
- 18:56long the event is, you haven't fuelled properly beforehand or
- 18:59had enough water fluid beforehand.
- 19:01And then so when you do go to the toilet, it looks like
- 19:04Coca-Cola. That's not good because that can
- 19:06be blood. And then immediately you'll
- 19:11start having a lot of cramps as well, but you'll just have the
- 19:15worst DOMS come on pretty quickly and it's basically
- 19:19because your muscles trying to eat themselves, right.
- 19:22So like, that's when you should probably go and get looked at
- 19:24from personal and the experience of that.
- 19:26And if you want to see it seriously, then go and watch
- 19:29this for sure. But off the back of that, that's
- 19:33when he started to make his name for himself.
- 19:35And, and the, the reason that he, the, the guys with the brand
- 19:39were so interested in him, kind of liked him was the day before
- 19:43that event, he went and did like a shake out run and he was like,
- 19:48it was something like coming for you, Jim or something.
- 19:50Which, and Jim is a very famous ultra runner who currently held
- 19:54the course record for that race, which the next day he went and
- 19:56broke the course record, which was a prior race before the
- 19:59Rabdo thing. But like they jumped on him.
- 20:02Then then he goes and does this and it's like they're like,
- 20:04who's this kid just calling out the greatest of all time?
- 20:07Like you don't do that. And then just like literally run
- 20:09himself into the ground. And then that was also the
- 20:12highlight for them, where they. It it was clearly something he
- 20:16needed help with. Yeah.
- 20:17Which really helped them get into into work.
- 20:19Yeah, yeah. Which is like a nice
- 20:21collaboration. Yeah.
- 20:23And so then over the following year and I actually didn't know
- 20:26this about which running, but you you get a golden ticket to
- 20:30go and like. PP like world champs basically.
- 20:34Essentially, and there's a bit where essentially he signed up
- 20:38for this race. The whole video crew sponsors
- 20:41have flown out. And I know how awkward this be
- 20:43this would be as a video, as a videographer being at this event
- 20:46waiting for this person to come. But he was ill, like severely
- 20:50ill. And so the day before he's like,
- 20:52yeah, I'm not coming to pre rest, sorry guys.
- 20:54And they're like they're saying the camera like we kind of hope
- 20:57he's fine tomorrow because we've flown all the video guys out
- 21:00here. And then the next shot is the
- 21:03sponsor walking up to the front desk and they're like, yeah, so
- 21:06he's not going to be running like, do I need to do anything?
- 21:09And they're like, no, it's fine. But there was a bit of an impact
- 21:14with the fact that he was obviously expected to be out the
- 21:16front of that race, like competing for the one of his
- 21:18first three positions to get this golden ticket.
- 21:21And so a lot of people were apparently strategizing their
- 21:23race to try and take him down, but they didn't know when it
- 21:26came to the start line that he was there.
- 21:29But yeah, so then it ended up being that wasn't his only
- 21:31chance. He had one more.
- 21:33It was like the last opportunity to get the golden ticket.
- 21:36Yeah. And then, yeah, just just go and
- 21:38watch it because it's like, it's an insight into like the weird,
- 21:42wacky world of ultra running. And it's something that I didn't
- 21:44know basically anything about, but it is super interesting.
- 21:47And it's kind of opened up a whole can of worms, really.
- 21:50And the thing that I really liked off the back of that Rabdo
- 21:54experience was that actual ability to push so hard.
- 21:59And he's got that like proper dog in him that he's like
- 22:01willing to push. But his whole mantra is like
- 22:03he's young and he's fit and he's kind of a little bit fearless
- 22:07and a bit reckless. Maybe in that case, too reckless
- 22:10probably. But with the help now of new
- 22:13sponsors and as like up and coming in the sport, I think
- 22:16it's when I look at ultra running, there's no one who
- 22:20comes to mind to me to go, wow, they're really cool.
- 22:24And I want to follow that person because they're young and
- 22:27interesting and in the sport. So I think he's, I think he's
- 22:30really good for the sport. And, and off the back of that,
- 22:34I'm, I'm glad we, we decided to, to kind of use this as a, as a
- 22:38topic for today's podcast, because there's another amazing
- 22:41documentary. And that's kind of the, the line
- 22:43of kind of the, the way the podcast is going to go today.
- 22:47But there's another amazing podcast, sorry, documentary
- 22:50called the Alpinist and it's very, very similar.
- 22:54But do you want to kind of like introduce the topics that we're
- 22:58going to talk about? Well, essentially we started
- 23:00talking about this one as a documentary that we I had just
- 23:04watched in the last 24 hours. And then I one of my favorite
- 23:06things and obviously with the job and line of work that I have
- 23:09chosen to go into is I love seeing not like necessarily the
- 23:13behind the scenes, but I love seeing the raw bits of sport,
- 23:16which you usually actually don't have access to as a fan.
- 23:19And I think if I look at what my parents grew up with with sport,
- 23:23they were really fortunate if they went to go and watch a
- 23:25match day because they get to see their, you know, the famous
- 23:28player 100 meters away from it. Be like, Oh my God.
- 23:30Whereas this brings you into the locker room, this brings you
- 23:33into their training like. Literally into their house.
- 23:36And all of a sudden you leave it with them, which is something
- 23:39that is a fan experience and a sports is someone that's so
- 23:43interested in sport. This is unbelievable, but
- 23:45there's certain it's developed a lot since sort of the early
- 23:492000s and that's where I want to talk about this.
- 23:52But there's what's been really cool is how many sports it's got
- 23:55into. Amazing.
- 23:56So carry on with the Alpinist. The reason why I use this as
- 24:00kind of like the parallel between the kid and and the
- 24:03Alpinist that I mean they're, they're completely different
- 24:05productions. Like the Alpinist is a full
- 24:08length documentary. I'm sure it was on platforms
- 24:11like Netflix or Amazon or whatever.
- 24:14Whereas The Kid is literally just like a really well done
- 24:17marketing documentary on on YouTube.
- 24:20But it's got like 1.2 million views and it's a couple of
- 24:24months old, which is crazy. And I think that's why it's
- 24:26become so popular just so quickly because it's really well
- 24:29done. But The Alchemist is very
- 24:31similar in terms of, it follows a climber called Marc Andre,
- 24:35who's this Canadian kid who's a bit crazy and, and wild and a
- 24:39bit wacky, a little bit like Hans Troyer from the kid.
- 24:43And Marc Andre is like, I, I don't fit in the classroom.
- 24:47So it's like as as a, as a young kid, he's just like, yeah, I'm
- 24:50going to leave school and I'm going to go to Yosemite and live
- 24:53with the climbing community as you do.
- 24:54And he also lives in like a little caravan in the woods, and
- 24:58he just spends his life climbing.
- 25:01And similar to Alex Honnell, who's much more famous for free
- 25:06solo, which I'm sure we'll talk about, but Marc Andre does a
- 25:10load of free soloing. So just like climbing with ropes
- 25:13and just has some wires disconnected or never had those
- 25:16wires where we were, you know, that's really dangerous if you
- 25:19climb that really high thing without any ropes.
- 25:20He just has like. Wind comes on and you actually
- 25:23just. Watching this thing like sweaty
- 25:26palms. But he also then goes and does
- 25:28ice climbing. And they in the Alpinist, they
- 25:30interview Alex Honnell, who's like, yeah, even I wouldn't ice
- 25:35climb without ropes. Like it's that level because the
- 25:37ice is so unpredictable. It melts, it cracks, it breaks.
- 25:40It's just honestly, I don't want to go into any more detail on
- 25:43the Alpinist because I will just ruin it.
- 25:45But you've got to go. I don't know.
- 25:47I think I watched it on Emirates on a flight.
- 25:49Really. Oh, it was one of those.
- 25:52No, I'd been recommended it and I couldn't find anywhere else.
- 25:55I'm sure it'd be on YouTube or on on Amazon or something.
- 25:59But it's it's so well worth watching, especially it's like
- 26:02opens up a whole new kind of culture and and sporting
- 26:06community within, within climbing.
- 26:08And how old is that? Not that old I'd say like within
- 26:13the last 5-6 years probably. So what I was saying originally
- 26:18with the topic was that going behind the scenes was a bit of a
- 26:22weird thing that you didn't really see.
- 26:25And I think the whole purpose of that originally was that if you
- 26:27look at sport from a business perspective and marketing
- 26:29perspective, you would only want to see the absolute the best of
- 26:32everything. So as a team, you want to see
- 26:34the team when they're performing.
- 26:36You do not want to show them in training because they might not
- 26:38look that professional. Whereas what has now been
- 26:41realised is actually that works better because people are more
- 26:43invested or like to see that it's unprofessional at points
- 26:46and like what goes on personality.
- 26:48Right Exactly. Like rather than making these
- 26:50people look like gods, actually no, they are people.
- 26:53They're not that different. They have real life struggles as
- 26:56well. But I could well be wrong here.
- 27:01But I think it all started from American sport, and that's
- 27:04because America has always been America and that it throws way
- 27:07more money at short than most other that most other nations
- 27:11can. But my first knowledge of this
- 27:14sort of thing was Hard Knocks. And that that will immediately
- 27:18be like, people will hear that and be like, yeah, 100%.
- 27:20I know what Hard Knocks is. Other people have no idea.
- 27:23Hard Knocks. Essentially, every year the NFL
- 27:26would assign Hard Knocks to a team.
- 27:28Back then they didn't really have a choice.
- 27:30They had to do it. And this film crew would move
- 27:34into the training camp of one team and would film everything
- 27:38behind the scenes, all the training, they put mics on the
- 27:41players. You'd get all the pre season
- 27:43games and you'd have really in depth storylines there.
- 27:46And then come start of the season, cameras were out because
- 27:50all of a sudden you could actually be learning the play
- 27:51calls. You can be a longer filming.
- 27:53Sure. Yeah.
- 27:54So it was only ever the pre season training camp, which is
- 27:56also really exciting because you would watch that and then you'd
- 28:01have the entire season to watch the team that you just followed.
- 28:04It would obviously be somewhat delayed so you wouldn't be able
- 28:06to watch it as it was happening, but it would be 1 episode a
- 28:08week. What was really cool about that
- 28:11and was so different was that you saw the utter rawness when
- 28:18it came to the business side of sport.
- 28:20So for those that don't know, and it is very cutthroat across
- 28:24most sport really. Like, you are a person, yes, but
- 28:27you're not treated like a person on the book.
- 28:29So if you know, you weren't providing much to me as a
- 28:34general, as an owner or as a as a head coach, I'd probably say
- 28:37to the owner, like we got to trade him.
- 28:40There's a particularly famous scene, which is actually quite
- 28:43sad looking back because the player ended up taking their own
- 28:45life a few years on. Not related specifically to this
- 28:48move, but a lot of people connotated this move.
- 28:50But he was a running back and he got called into the office,
- 28:56arguably in the prime of his career, but just having a bit of
- 28:58a lull. And they're like, so just to let
- 28:59you know you've been traded, you need to hand in your playbook
- 29:04and, and that will be done. And then he's like, OK, cool,
- 29:07can I can I call my grandma? And he's like, sure, no problem.
- 29:11And he's like trying to get his phone out and he's like, no, no,
- 29:12no, before you call your grandma, let's talk business.
- 29:14OK, I know you're going to do well, you need to go there like
- 29:18overnight. And then he replies and he's
- 29:21like, what did you trade me for? And they're like a couple picks
- 29:26and in in American football, they've obviously got the draft.
- 29:29And this goes for a bunch of sports, but you have your draft
- 29:31picks. So teams can trade.
- 29:33Let's say next year, I know that well, I might not know, but next
- 29:37year at some point in round one, I'm going to get to pick a
- 29:40player. That's just the way it works.
- 29:41I will. I don't know when it will be
- 29:44right now, but I can offer my pick to the team so that when
- 29:49next year comes around, instead of me choosing, that team would
- 29:52get it. But I'm going to get their
- 29:53player right now. Yeah.
- 29:54So they literally got a couple picks and it was basically them
- 29:57saying like we don't really want you anymore, but we'll get
- 30:00something. For you, and it literally is as
- 30:01fast as, hey, we've made the trade, you're done.
- 30:05You need to training them for them tomorrow.
- 30:07Like that it could be the other side of the country.
- 30:09And that's, that's a really a good thing to pick up on because
- 30:13obviously there's, there's been so many NFL documentaries
- 30:17recently on Netflix, whatever. There's been loads.
- 30:19And you actually see the family side of life where it's like
- 30:24we've literally lived in this place for 5-6 years, 5-6
- 30:29seasons. This is where my life is, and
- 30:32then I get traded and now I have to move my whole family,
- 30:35schools, everything all the way across the other side of it
- 30:37without even like a moment's notice.
- 30:39It's like you've been traded, you're done.
- 30:41I think that's one. Is that that must be
- 30:43quarterbacks. Is that what it's called?
- 30:44So they do that as well. So there's there's more
- 30:46recently, there's a bunch more series which are done more like
- 30:49Netflix where they've made quarterbacks, which follows 3
- 30:51quarterbacks. And this is the the bigger
- 30:53change as well. Since media has recognized this,
- 30:55this does so well, they now follow teams through the entire
- 30:57season. So for quarterbacks, that is 1
- 31:00where they're following three quarterbacks.
- 31:02I would say the best quarterbacks were there at very
- 31:04different levels through their season and basically just see
- 31:07what happens as. Well, I can't remember.
- 31:09He he moved to the Falcons from Minnesota.
- 31:12Yeah, why is it this always happens?
- 31:16Always by then it's also Joe Burrows and.
- 31:20Well, I'll have Patmore Holmes in the first season.
- 31:22I I didn't watch the first season.
- 31:23I'm thinking the second season, but.
- 31:25So yeah, second season and the guy whose name, wow, this is so
- 31:29bad because I had it at the beginning of the conversation.
- 31:31I was going to fight me Cousins. So he was at Minnesota.
- 31:34He was in the first season and he was also in the second
- 31:37season. This is complete side note, ADHD
- 31:39on full flow. They tried to go after a few
- 31:42different quarterbacks and although like said, no.
- 31:45And so Kirk was like, I'll do it again.
- 31:48But unfortunately he was probably the least interesting
- 31:50because he's he's the most white guy I've ever seen.
- 31:54Like lives for grilling on his barbecue and not having a clue
- 31:59about fashion sense or anything. Like, yeah, super V, he is the
- 32:041950s golden era quarterback. He's not still living.
- 32:08Yeah, he's in the wrong sense, but.
- 32:11Like the other thing that Hard Knocks did was it was the first
- 32:14time that it would get you to buy in on stories of people that
- 32:18were effectively irrelevant. Like the beautiful thing about
- 32:22the preseason for the NFL is that all the games are
- 32:26completely pointless on the face of it because usually all the
- 32:29bad teams win all the all their games and they go into the
- 32:31season, they get rinsed. You're a bit like what's going
- 32:33on here. But what you actually see is 90%
- 32:36of the time in some of those games, the players are not the
- 32:40well known players. They are players trying to make
- 32:42the team because there is a 53 man roster.
- 32:44So that's the squad size. But at the beginning of training
- 32:47camp, they can have like 90 people.
- 32:49And so they're really trying to cut that down.
- 32:51And the only way you get to do that as a player is to showcase
- 32:53your talent. And it's really tough because
- 32:55sometimes you're going to be thrown into the game in a really
- 32:57unideal situation. You've got to make something
- 32:59happen. If you don't, you're cut.
- 33:01Like you just do not get the cut.
- 33:02You're done. Again, teams will try and trade
- 33:04you because then they get something back for you.
- 33:06And yeah, you're you're basically last chance.
- 33:10And we've spoken this about this before because Daio, who was the
- 33:13first ever guest on this podcast, was on the practice
- 33:17squad for a while. But you, you try and if you're
- 33:19good enough to make the team, you make the team.
- 33:22If you're not good enough, you have a second chance in that you
- 33:24can be put on their practice squad where you train with the
- 33:26team, but you never travel or play in games unless you're
- 33:28called up for like is people fighting tooth and nail for
- 33:31that? Because if they're out of the
- 33:33NFL, the chance of getting back in is like 0.
- 33:36Yeah. I think it's the average NFL
- 33:40players career last less than one year.
- 33:42Yeah. So when you look at the players.
- 33:43There's just so much new young talent coming through each year
- 33:47through this draft as well. It's just like, so competitive.
- 33:49And then one of the documentary kind of things that was on
- 33:53YouTube originally that you mentioned was someone decided it
- 33:57was a great idea to do Quarterback Under the Lights,
- 33:59which was actually looking at youth American in high school,
- 34:02in high school. And it followed 3 quarterbacks
- 34:05who were essentially trying to make it into their dream
- 34:07college. This truly, I think is the
- 34:09greatest, I mean in in all the wrong ways that really, but the
- 34:13greatest American football documentary series that I've
- 34:17ever seen. I think you might still be able
- 34:20to find on YouTube, but it was on Netflix.
- 34:23Because they did the second season, but the first, the first
- 34:26season where you mentioned from from who actually went into the
- 34:30NFL and then had a terrible time in.
- 34:32The NFL, but he's he's he's still on like the Bills or
- 34:34something. No, no, no, he's moved now to
- 34:37the Steelers. He's he's he's way back.
- 34:39He never plays, but he's. No, no, no, no.
- 34:41I really have some recent update.
- 34:43Oh, really? Yeah, On on on memes IG.
- 34:46Oh, no. His LinkedIn has been updated.
- 34:48He's now an insurance broker. So yeah, went down there, he had
- 34:52some controversial. Stuff like how incredible he was
- 34:55in terms of ranking. I think he must have been the
- 34:58year before Trevor Lawrence or something like that.
- 35:01That year. I know Trevor Lawrence was never
- 35:02on that show. I, I remember, I think it's the
- 35:06season after with Spencer Rattler.
- 35:08And they have Justin Fields as well.
- 35:10Justin Fields as well, who's like incredible, but he's what's
- 35:13he done in the NFL. Yeah, he's not Well, we'll see
- 35:16why he does this season. But the, the thing that was
- 35:18really cool about that was you're, you're getting the
- 35:20inside look at high school where the difference between like the
- 35:24NFL when it's your job, a lot of these guys have families that
- 35:27they're providing for high school is so ego driven.
- 35:30Like you've got Tate Martel was in the first season who honestly
- 35:34was like, you love to hate him, but he was also so talented.
- 35:37But the tough thing was that physically, he realistically
- 35:43knew and everyone watching knew that because he was quite sure
- 35:46he wasn't really ever going to make it to the next level.
- 35:47He wanted to not believe that. And so he was chauvinistic.
- 35:51All of this and what ended up happening in his college career
- 35:54was it was the IT was the biggest crash out and issue of
- 35:57his own life. But watching him in that series
- 36:00was so it was somewhat relatable because I was thinking at the
- 36:03time playing the sport back then as well.
- 36:05I was like, God, I probably would be like this if I was, you
- 36:10know, 17 this athletic at school and everyone seemed to love me.
- 36:14How would you not have the? Thing that baffles me with the
- 36:19American sports system, and I don't know if I've got my head
- 36:22around it, if I love it or hate it, but as a kid playing
- 36:27football in that situation, you're literally just given a
- 36:29number. You're like, hey, Tate, you're
- 36:31the best in the country. You're the state, you're the
- 36:35best in the country. Do you know what that means?
- 36:37You're going to be the like the big boy at college and then
- 36:42you're going to go to the NFL. You're going to be the best,
- 36:43you're going to be the most famous person.
- 36:45You are high school games. You're going to be televised
- 36:47every week. Literally.
- 36:48You you can nationwide. Friday night you turn.
- 36:50It is. So is that how it works?
- 36:52Friday night is high school, Saturday is college, and then
- 36:56Sunday is the NFL. So like.
- 36:57When the weekend come, Well actually, so it's mad when the
- 37:01NFL season's are full swing. Podcast.
- 37:03Yeah, I know we'll move on after this, but when the American
- 37:06season's in full swing, you've got Thursday Night Football, one
- 37:09NFL game, you've then got high school on Friday nights.
- 37:12So you go to go down to your local high school, you support
- 37:14your family, whatever. Saturday night you've got your
- 37:16college games, Sunday you've got your mainstream NFL games.
- 37:19And then Monday you've got Monday Night Football with one
- 37:22or two games on a Monday from the NFL.
- 37:24And then you have Tuesday and Wednesday off and then you're
- 37:27back again. And it's just, but they love it.
- 37:30They love it. And that's why that stuff does
- 37:31so well. But then if we look at the
- 37:34change of hands in ownership of Formula One, all of a sudden
- 37:40drive to survive rocks up and they've basically taken what
- 37:44Hard Knocks and all or nothing with American football with
- 37:48sorry with Amazon did and then brought the same idea to Formula
- 37:53One. And if I'm completely honest, as
- 37:55a as a kid that used to love F1 and stopped watching it when it
- 37:58went to sky save, yeah, it saved Formula One.
- 38:03Formula One, I think, was dying in the water quite sadly,
- 38:06because if anything, the engineering was getting better
- 38:08and the cars were getting faster and the drivers were getting
- 38:09better, but there was just no. Coverage of it.
- 38:11That's so true, isn't it? And I remember pestering my dad
- 38:13to be like, why aren't we getting Sky?
- 38:14He's like, I'm not paying for it.
- 38:16Yeah. And I was like, well, we, that
- 38:18used to be our thing. We used to always watch the F1.
- 38:19Now how are we going to watch it?
- 38:20He's like, we're just not. And I, I lived for it.
- 38:24Yeah, I absolutely lived for it. I was the biggest Lewis Hamilton
- 38:26fan going. And then I just stopped watching
- 38:29it. Yeah.
- 38:29And then all of a sudden and I I still wasn't watching it.
- 38:31The drive survivor came along and I was like, oh, I can
- 38:33actually see what happened last season.
- 38:34Sure. And not only that, but you see
- 38:37again the. Pro quality scenes and and the.
- 38:39Drivers going how much they actually hate each other.
- 38:42My dad would always be like, oh, they actually hate each other.
- 38:44And I was like, they can't, they're team mates.
- 38:45Like what are you talking? About but that's that, that's
- 38:47like the beauty of like old school F1 where you have like
- 38:49Schumacher running down the pit wall to like hit David Coulthard
- 38:53because they've crashed. Whatever.
- 38:54It's just like, that's like the glory days.
- 38:57But yeah, Drive to Survive has like really made it popular in
- 39:00mainstream and more people now understand the sport a little
- 39:03bit better and the dynamics within the teams.
- 39:05And as a result, yeah, F1 is literally like everyone watches
- 39:09F1. Everyone loves it.
- 39:10I'm not going to plaster stereotypes of what men and
- 39:12women should be interested in or why they might have different
- 39:15interests generally, but what I have definitely noticed is the
- 39:18impact of Drive to Survive, his support, way more female
- 39:21engagement with the sport because I think it hits
- 39:25different things for for guys, maybe we're more simple, we can
- 39:29watch things go round in loops endlessly and just being
- 39:33satisfied by that. But having a bit more context of
- 39:35drama and what the meaning is and a bit more of behind the
- 39:38scenes brings in a totally different brow.
- 39:40Personality in the in the, yeah, in the actual drivers like you,
- 39:43you understand it's more than just a helmet and there's,
- 39:46there's actual personalities behind it, which is the really
- 39:49cool thing. And also the next level with the
- 39:52team principles where it's just like often you, they sat on the
- 39:56pit wall and they're like, do you have a personality?
- 39:58But actually there's so much behind going on in there.
- 40:01So it's been cool to even from someone who watched and followed
- 40:05Formula One for years before Drive Survive, actually getting
- 40:09the opportunity to see more of the behind the scenes stuff.
- 40:12And as further evidence of how this can grab a completely
- 40:16different crowd, I have never really had an interest in the
- 40:20Tour de France. Right When I was growing up, my
- 40:23uncle, well, my cousin, aunt and uncle moved to France and they
- 40:28would watch it and I was like, this must be a thing because you
- 40:30live in France and he's like, no, no, it's incredible.
- 40:33And I was like, no, he isn't. This is so boring.
- 40:36You're literally watching them ride along Australia.
- 40:38It's not like they're doing laps.
- 40:39There's no pit stops, nothing. There are so many cyclists as
- 40:43well, like who? How do you know who's who?
- 40:45How can you say 1's winning when they're all cycled for however
- 40:48many days? And then Tour de France
- 40:50Unchained came out, which not a spoiler alert, but depressingly,
- 40:55and I told you this, they've cancelled.
- 40:57It's not happening anymore. So the the two or three seasons
- 41:00that are available on Netflix, watch them while you can,
- 41:02because apparently there's no more coming.
- 41:03Changed your opinion on cycling? Like I now understand the
- 41:07tactics behind it. I now understand the politics.
- 41:09I'm super interested in it. Would I know who Pogachar is?
- 41:12Probably. Would I know him like I know him
- 41:15now and how much of A like a level ahead of everyone else he
- 41:17is? Absolutely not.
- 41:19And so that's become really interesting.
- 41:20And it's I've then started using these forms of sort of movies or
- 41:25documentaries to reignite former passions that I used to have
- 41:30with other sports. And I played a bit of tennis
- 41:32when I was growing up. Break Point on Netflix is pretty
- 41:34good. Full swing.
- 41:36I enjoyed that. I'm not so bought in on those.
- 41:39I don't know if they're just done slightly differently.
- 41:41I wasn't so bought. In the the break point for me, I
- 41:43never managed to get into it, but full swing love it like I've
- 41:48I think that's brilliant. I think it's like the same level
- 41:51really is drive to survive. But I guess it's like different
- 41:55like if you're a golfer and if you're into golf, then I think
- 41:58it's great. But there's there's so many now
- 42:00you mention it like there's so many that crop up and we kind of
- 42:04brushed over all or nothing, but all or nothing was.
- 42:06They've done the next step, they've done rugby, they've done
- 42:10football as we would normally call it football.
- 42:12Because they followed I think Tottenham, Arsenal, I think they
- 42:16did Man City. Did Man City?
- 42:17Yeah, and they're all amazing, and it's something you kind of
- 42:20touched on. There's so many people in the
- 42:22organizations that just don't get enough credit.
- 42:25It's just like the random, I love that.
- 42:28Or like there's, there's just some random person who you never
- 42:32know otherwise and you get to know all of the people and all
- 42:35the relationships that they have with the players and in the team
- 42:38and and the fans. It's like it's really clever.
- 42:40There's there's, I'm not going all the way back to it, but
- 42:43there is one particular season of Hard Knocks where they follow
- 42:46the Cleveland Browns and new coaches come in and it's like,
- 42:48I'm making it a thing where on the Cleveland Browns helmet they
- 42:51have a stripe that goes down the middle.
- 42:52He's like, I want players to earn their stripe.
- 42:56And it then cuts to the kick guy who's got to take all the
- 42:59stripes off the helmets and he's literally having a horror.
- 43:01And then it's announced that they're all getting their
- 43:03stripes. And he's like, oh.
- 43:04What are you doing the stripes? Back on the helmet and you don't
- 43:07really realize like someone has to do that.
- 43:09Yeah, yeah. It's not just a machine that put
- 43:11his helmets, 53 helmets. And then it's the same when I'm
- 43:14looking at the Tour de France, I'm like, oh, he's got a
- 43:16mechanical like a bike. A guy pulls over which got 4
- 43:19bikes and then he puts a bike down.
- 43:21The cyclist starts cycling and then immediately throws the bike
- 43:23on the side of the road and they're like, oh, he's been,
- 43:25he's given him the wrong. It's like how so many bodies
- 43:28pick. This year in the Tour that it
- 43:32kind of went viral, there's always like a neutral mechanic
- 43:35from Shimano who's sure like a title sponsor for the Tour de
- 43:39France and they wear blue and they just hover around on a bike
- 43:42around the lead pack. Sometimes the team cars can't
- 43:45get between the peloton and the lead pack and it was kind of a a
- 43:49bit of a ropey time. The people were attacking.
- 43:52Pogacha hadn't really got a strong foothold in the race yet,
- 43:56but he looks he looked the strongest and one point he just
- 44:00like I think he was behind Vinegar or someone, but he lost
- 44:05his wheel slid across the road hot back up and his bike was
- 44:09completely screwed. This neutral mechanic jumps off
- 44:13the motorbike, runs across the road, gets the chain back on the
- 44:16bike in lightning speed, pops him back on and throws him back.
- 44:18It's just like it was like F1 standard pit shop and it it just
- 44:23went viral because it was so smooth.
- 44:25But this guy like knee slid across the road to save Fugatch
- 44:28and it basically saved his stage that day.
- 44:31But that was really cool. But yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm trying
- 44:33to think of of other documentaries that we'll see,
- 44:35which is. What I did because because we
- 44:37can, we will, you know, keep going.
- 44:40But and and what I would be really interested for those of
- 44:42you that are listening, let me know what you think are your
- 44:46favorite documentaries or let Charles know as well right into
- 44:48the podcast what your favorite documentaries are.
- 44:50Even if you think they're rogue and we might not have heard, If
- 44:53anything else, even better because I'd love to go away and
- 44:55watch them then bring them back. And talk about them.
- 44:57There's so many that I, I already know that we just
- 44:59haven't haven't had a chance to talk about, but we would talk
- 45:01for hours. But what I find really
- 45:03interesting is the lag between mainstream television and now
- 45:07what is like streaming sites and Netflix and YouTube, this free
- 45:13platform where I mean, you look at if we go completely rogue.
- 45:17An example I was using the other day with someone is as I get
- 45:20into editing videos, I then go away and I watch someone like
- 45:23Cal Freezy, who has transformed from being a FIFA gamer to being
- 45:28a food YouTube. And I'm watching all of his
- 45:30animations and I'm like, hold on a minute.
- 45:33He has a floating United Kingdom with a root and an arrow going
- 45:36over. And I'm like this 10 years ago,
- 45:39even five years ago would have been like, how is he doing all
- 45:41of this? And it's obviously not him, but
- 45:43like the editing level is crazy. So then it's no surprise that in
- 45:48the same way that has happened where you go from like
- 45:50television programs, which to have crazy animations or
- 45:52whatever to, to that just being on YouTube as a standard video.
- 45:55You've got the same in these like sports documentaries where
- 45:58brands and athletes are documenting their lives and
- 46:01their training in a way that's so accessible for us to watch
- 46:04now. And it's so easy to buy into and
- 46:06some of the brands that are doing it at best, not only that
- 46:09video that you we've already spoken about, but obviously one
- 46:13of the famous ones for inspiration at the moment with
- 46:15how cinematic it all is. BPM and in particular their
- 46:19speed project video where they race from California to Las
- 46:23Vegas through the night. That video, I don't know how
- 46:25many views it's on, is one hour 15 of pure brilliance.
- 46:29Their content team is incredible.
- 46:31It's it's it really sets the standard and like it it.
- 46:37I think Nick actually, like a couple of days ago on a post on
- 46:41his Instagram, gave a shout out or he was talking about it on
- 46:44his podcast. He gave a shout out to.
- 46:46I think there's three guys who do his main content.
- 46:48And I don't know, it's a machine.
- 46:50Like BPM is a machine. I don't know if there's like a
- 46:52main team that does all of the BPM content.
- 46:55And then there's his personal squad that does his own YouTube
- 46:57because they're pumping out Nick Bear videos, They're doing BPM
- 47:01videos. And then they've got all of
- 47:03their athletes, people like Lucy Davies and whoever else is
- 47:07sponsored by BPN, who are all getting their own content.
- 47:09Like, it's next level. Yeah.
- 47:11And like, I watched that as if I was watching a Netflix show.
- 47:15You just go on YouTube and like type it in and then you just sat
- 47:17back on the sofa and like this could easily be on Netflix.
- 47:20So we know at the time of recording this that tomorrow
- 47:23they're releasing their backyard ultra video from earlier on in
- 47:25the year, which is already broke the Internet when they were just
- 47:28posting the stuff on their story and, and and general social
- 47:31media posts. So now they're putting this
- 47:33documentary out there and like. Isn't that must have that's like
- 47:36kick started this like like phase of people being fanatical
- 47:41about ultra running? Yeah, 100% it has.
- 47:43And like they seem to have done that quite a lot recently with a
- 47:46bunch of different things. They've really seemed to have
- 47:48timed it right, which is really smart.
- 47:49But maybe it's actually as a result of the production they've
- 47:52got. But I know for a fact that
- 47:56tomorrow, tomorrow evening, I'm going to be sat there.
- 48:00And that is, I've planned my day around it.
- 48:02Yeah. And it's on a free streaming
- 48:04site. I'm going to sit there.
- 48:05I'm going to watch this, possibly with a bag of popcorn.
- 48:07Yeah. And I haven't thought about
- 48:09anything really like that for such a long time when it would
- 48:11be like, I know that. I mean, this is a really bad
- 48:14example, but like, planet Earth, when that came out, was such a
- 48:17big thing. Yeah.
- 48:18And the first episode was coming out.
- 48:20Last time I watched it was like that was at uni.
- 48:23Me and my mates, we'd go get some bags of popcorn, sit and
- 48:26watch this thing. But if it was like the big
- 48:28finale of a season or like a big thing you're expecting to watch,
- 48:31like you do that and this is on you.
- 48:33Like a sporting final or something.
- 48:35Like I'm so already bought into because I know that it got down
- 48:39to these last two guys. We're going head to head and I
- 48:42know I've seen. That's the thing, you already
- 48:43know the outcome and. I just want to see what
- 48:45happened. Yeah.
- 48:46Like, how did it happen? Because it was only going.
- 48:48You got loads of content from it, but it was still quite
- 48:51elusive. And lots of stuff happened.
- 48:52And there was a big rainstorm. I felt like I was on the
- 48:55outside. Yeah, looking in.
- 48:56And I'm sorry to be brought on to the inside.
- 48:58Yeah, yeah. And he was so jealous.
- 49:00Who didn't get the invite A. 100 I'm not even bold enough to put
- 49:04my name in the hat for it because I'm actually quite
- 49:05scared that I'd have to turn up and give myself Rabdo.
- 49:09Run 200 miles to make 20 laps. But even but.
- 49:12You just, you just, you get sucked into that whole thing and
- 49:15you're like, I wish I was a part of the BPN crew.
- 49:18I wish I lived out in Texas. One day when BPN actually comes
- 49:21to the UK, mark my words, I won't do it.
- 49:26Now we we need to move on to another key element of our
- 49:29podcast, which is obviously the grind my gears weirdly after
- 49:33what we've been talking about. I feel so positive, I know.
- 49:36And so I'm going to have to really lower my tone.
- 49:39We actually, let's start this off, let's start the gears
- 49:42turning because we had someone give us one which is going to
- 49:46upset both of us. All right.
- 49:47So I'm a few days ago I ran in SO.
- 49:50You're going to tell me who this is not?
- 49:51Publicly. But I you don't know them, OK.
- 49:54But a few days ago I ran in. Someone called Hannah.
- 49:57She made comments. She actually got shouted out.
- 49:59Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm not going to say her
- 50:01surname, that's a bit rude. But.
- 50:04Hannah decided to make a comment about the fact that summer was
- 50:07over. OK, because we've basically gone
- 50:09from like really nice weather to arranged.
- 50:10She's like, Oh well that just means we're one step close to
- 50:13all the men that think it's OK to wear shorts in sub zero
- 50:16conditions. And I was like, Hannah, Hannah,
- 50:20you are unfortunately preaching to the damn choir.
- 50:24That is me. Really grind my gears, I could
- 50:26see it. Like that was that was her grind
- 50:28my gears and grind my gears that people have an issue with that
- 50:31Concern yourself. If you're cold, put something
- 50:34warm on. But for me, I'd be interested in
- 50:36what you think of this. For me as it gets colder I go
- 50:39from T-shirt and shorts to hoodie.
- 50:45Still T-shirt, but hoodie over the top is still shorts.
- 50:47Same. Then it's long sleeve top and
- 50:50shorts before I even think about putting anything over my butt.
- 50:53Lower half, yeah. I go gilet hoodie.
- 50:57Never a finance bro though so that's not an ick.
- 51:01No, the Gillette's cool. Gillette, do you know what if
- 51:03that's going to be? Someone's growing my gear.
- 51:05Next week it's 100. Percent 100% Finance no your.
- 51:08Legs never get cold, man. You don't need and maybe this is
- 51:11also a guy thing because we typically have hairier legs.
- 51:14Maybe, maybe, but I very very rarely feel the need to wrap up
- 51:20although. I'm usually wearing trousers out
- 51:23of like I'm going somewhere where shorts are not socially
- 51:26acceptable. I've argued that my body's
- 51:28thermostat has been broken since I did live in the Alps for six
- 51:32months. Like, you're running in and out
- 51:34of the hotel pretty hot. So you're in shorts and AT
- 51:37shirt, and then you realize you've been having conversation
- 51:39outside for 15 minutes. No, it's cold.
- 51:41Well, no, you're not. But you're like, probably go
- 51:43inside. Don't know if I can feel or
- 51:44whatever. But no, I will be.
- 51:47Wearing I will be wearing. And you know what?
- 51:49It saved me so much in investing in jeans and stuff like that in
- 51:52the winter. Like I wear jeans.
- 51:54Jeans is supposed to be smart. Casual jeans is smart for me.
- 51:57Oh, super smart. Super super.
- 51:58Smart. It's a jeans event.
- 51:59You're fortunate. People would be shocked at how
- 52:02infrequently I wear trousers or jeans.
- 52:04Yeah, yeah. It's just it actually feels.
- 52:06Weird. Something that's not sportswear.
- 52:08Feels weird on my knees. Yeah, I know.
- 52:09I'm yeah, I'm into shorts. And you know what's so weird?
- 52:11Like your? Shorts as well is literally like
- 52:15a year and a bit ago I wore a suit every day to work.
- 52:17Yeah, that's why I just like had to imagine.
- 52:19No, that was crazy. So bad how how the turntables
- 52:22turn tables, right? I hope that's put some fire to
- 52:26the conversation. Well, everyone's entitled to
- 52:28their opinion. Hannah's entitled to her
- 52:29opinion. We listen and we jar.
- 52:31We listen and we go. Got that one wrong?
- 52:34Yeah, I know. Go on then, are you with your
- 52:36gram again? My my first one is is not
- 52:38fitness related and it's actually to do with social media
- 52:42and it's that. Grinds my gears.
- 52:45Is it the fact that 64% of people that watch this on
- 52:50YouTube aren't subscribed? There's your cue and also you
- 52:55can now subscribe on Spotify. You can leave a rating.
- 52:58We've got 14 five star ratings. Don't be the 15th person that
- 53:00leaves as one isn't five star. Hannah's going to be that he is
- 53:03going. Off there right now.
- 53:04But if you want to leave a review, do so at Mindsets
- 53:06Podcast. Use the link on our social media
- 53:11and at Mindset Hunterscore podcast.
- 53:13There you go, beautiful. Anyway, back to the Sam's.
- 53:16It's so trivial when people upload stories without music, it
- 53:21just feels like, you know, it's naked, it's missing something.
- 53:24Can I go one further please? The people that upload or repost
- 53:30someone's story and don't edit the background.
- 53:34Me and it's like some random colour.
- 53:36It's like it's basic, like Instagram does a really good
- 53:39choice colour matching, but like all you have to do is press the
- 53:42the draw thing and choose a colour, hold it down and then
- 53:46it's done. Yeah, I bet that's a hack that
- 53:48people don't even know. You are king of Instagram story
- 53:51hacks. Actually you showed me about the
- 53:52sliding colour bar changing maybe.
- 53:55Maybe there's something in that. Yeah, that I don't.
- 53:59It's maybe because when I I like an elaborate story and all of my
- 54:04stories, like maybe the insight into my life.
- 54:06Now when you go on to my stories, when there's music
- 54:09there, typically it's related to something.
- 54:11I have just randomly chosen music.
- 54:13It's it's very infrequently, you know, if it's like a someone's
- 54:18posted a photo of their dog and they put like, who let the dogs
- 54:21out? And it's never like, it's not
- 54:23like that. Yeah.
- 54:23But it's like the music has relevance to the person in it or
- 54:27the place in it or the time that I took the photo or whatever.
- 54:29It's whatever. It's my favorite music.
- 54:31So there's always hidden meaning.
- 54:33There's it's never a coincidence.
- 54:35Sunset. Zach Bryant something.
- 54:38In the Origin. So then when I see a story
- 54:41without any music, I'm like, yeah, but you're missing like
- 54:4450% of the beauty of yeah yeah, the content.
- 54:46Yeah, that's like easy low hanging fruit.
- 54:48If I'm on the, if I'm on the tube, for example, and I have to
- 54:51listen to this horrible screaming sounds while I'm
- 54:53looking at your lovely picture of your dog, I'm not
- 54:55appreciating. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:56Put a nice song on my Airpods. So, so that's now that's got the
- 54:59gear saying, you know when someone does a carousel post,
- 55:02but they've put together photos with different aspect ratio.
- 55:06So they've got like a 916 and then like a, what's the other
- 55:10way around, 69, Yeah. And then like a 4-5 and they
- 55:14just, they don't match. Some people's Instagram doesn't
- 55:17let mine doesn't let me do that. Oh, really?
- 55:18Yeah. Yeah, I don't know.
- 55:19I do. That so like that's good and
- 55:21bad, yeah. But yeah, it's just people need
- 55:25to take their social media all series.
- 55:27You're not allowed. You're not allowed to do it.
- 55:30And and also like using background on text on stories or
- 55:33even on like. There's so many like do's and
- 55:36don'ts for the unsaid. If if you listen to this and
- 55:40you're like this, like you guys care too much, No, you don't
- 55:43care enough. Like it's it it.
- 55:45They've got a lot of it. Doesn't annoy you, but all of
- 55:47your followers hate you for. It they've got a lot of gifts
- 55:50going on on their stories of it. And don't get me wrong, I've
- 55:52done a couple gifts. But there's a time there's a.
- 55:54Time and a place. It's for comedic value.
- 55:56Yeah, definitely time and a place.
- 55:58Yeah, no, that's a really good one.
- 55:59I like that. Yeah, mine.
- 56:01Etiquette on social media in general.
- 56:03There needs to be a course basic Instagram should have just a
- 56:06basic thing on their page. You go to Instagram and you
- 56:08learn. This is how to Instagram for.
- 56:10PDF. Mine this week comes from.
- 56:15He hasn't told me what this is, but he's he's really set it up
- 56:17so. He's really riled me up this
- 56:19week. I'm hoping it's really trivial.
- 56:21I have been trading back and forth with someone essentially
- 56:25what he's doing rounds, but in the fitness space doing rounds
- 56:27typically means coffees. And so this person has bought me
- 56:32quite a few coffees and I feel a bit indebted to them.
- 56:34And I was like, OK, today I'm going to make the effort.
- 56:37I'm going to go and get them a coffee.
- 56:41Now that actually double lucked out.
- 56:43And this sounds really cheap, but when I got there, I realized
- 56:46I had a loyalty reward of a free coffee.
- 56:48That's the best. So fortunately the place was
- 56:51nice enough to give me my coffee, which is slightly more
- 56:53expensive free. And then I bought the other one.
- 56:56So I bought that coffee. I took it to the person and when
- 56:58I brought it back, there was someone else at this particular
- 57:01location that was like, where's mine?
- 57:05And I was like, I don't know how to say this, but I didn't want
- 57:10to buy you one. I wanted to repay my debt to
- 57:13someone else. I didn't want to begin you being
- 57:15in debt to me because this person for contacts and I'm
- 57:17speaking in a certain way because I don't necessarily know
- 57:20if they'll hear this, but I don't want them to feel that
- 57:23attacked. Just a little bit.
- 57:26I don't see this person anymore our timing wise with when they
- 57:30work and when I work doesn't crossover anymore.
- 57:33Which means that I know full well I buy you coffee.
- 57:36I'm not getting that back ever. But I am too polite to say
- 57:41anything like that. So I was like, of course, sorry,
- 57:46what would you like? You went back.
- 57:48I went, I left the coffee shop. I'd come all the way back to
- 57:51this gym. I then went back to the coffee
- 57:53shop like a little mug and I. Wow.
- 57:56Took the order, it was a latte with a shot of vanilla. 7:00 in
- 58:06the morning. This person has requested I
- 58:07leave. Yeah, to go to the coffee shop
- 58:10I've just been to to get a latte.
- 58:12Sorry. An oat milk latte with vanilla
- 58:16decaf, £4.65. Well, if you were. 465.
- 58:25Ever think it's acceptable to spend £4.65 on a decaf coffee?
- 58:31Sort your fucking life out. You can't be having decaf and
- 58:35spending £4.65 on it decaf. Have a cup of water.
- 58:40What are you having it for? What's the grime idea?
- 58:43Is it the coffee? Is it the private?
- 58:45Is it the decaf? It's the flavour, It's the milk.
- 58:47All of it together is a number of gears that are grinding.
- 58:50Clearly. Yeah, because like the main
- 58:53thing for me is decaf coffee. Like if you want decaf coffee,
- 58:59then get a decaf coffee that's like cheap.
- 59:01Like you do not need to pay £4.60 for it to come out of a
- 59:04machine. Have oat milk that's overpriced
- 59:07from a barista anyway. Like just make it wherever you
- 59:10are. Like you do not need to be going
- 59:11to a barista for it. Then at 7:00 in the morning, why
- 59:15do you need a decaf coffee? You don't need one.
- 59:18You're saying you need. One set.
- 59:20Stop saying you need one. Oh, I can't stop my day without
- 59:23a coffee. I was completely on board with
- 59:24that conversation. I was like, fair enough, you
- 59:25need your no. And then you turn around and you
- 59:27go to me decaf. You don't need it.
- 59:31Nothing about that do you need. You're never getting your 465.
- 59:35If you need it for hydration purposes, have a cup of water
- 59:39water. Taste is nice.
- 59:41Add some squash, buy a shit coffee, I don't care.
- 59:46Do not pay £4.65 for. Decaf coffee, Well, coffee in
- 59:50London is extortionate anyway. It is the full pals that way.
- 59:53Yeah. I kind of like it though.
- 59:55I like the process of going and getting a like coffee.
- 59:58I know, I know, I know I'm being mugged off, but I.
- 1:00:01I. I'm addicted to it.
- 1:00:03At the beginning of this podcast, years ago when I
- 1:00:04started it, it was an avid coffee hater, really when
- 1:00:08travelling, tried to make coffee, didn't really like it.
- 1:00:10Still, as I came back into London I literally forced myself
- 1:00:12to like it and if I'm being completely honest, if it
- 1:00:14disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow, probably
- 1:00:16wouldn't miss it. However, nothing matches up with
- 1:00:19going to a coffee shop. It's like a hug as an adult.
- 1:00:23Yeah, I get what you're saying, but it needs to be the coffee
- 1:00:27shop needs to be right, not a chain coffee shop.
- 1:00:30And I don't want to go down the the the the kind of the rabbit
- 1:00:33hole of being a coffee snob because I'm not a coffee snob.
- 1:00:36I. Completely agree.
- 1:00:37I'm not across the snob at all. I agree that it's. 4 lbs for my
- 1:00:41flat white. Come on I I need it to be right
- 1:00:44for me. Yeah.
- 1:00:45And what I will say is, as much as I agree that like trying to
- 1:00:49avoid chains is good, or at least big chains, however I do
- 1:00:53feel really dirty when I go to Gales because gales is really
- 1:00:56good. I hate gales.
- 1:00:58I hate girls. I.
- 1:01:00Love to hate gales. Hate girls is kind of good.
- 1:01:02I have so many problems with gales and my next next podcast,
- 1:01:06the Grind My Gears, is just going to be about gales.
- 1:01:08Don't tell them that because they won't come back.
- 1:01:11He's not going to say that guys come back next episode.
- 1:01:15But that's that's my grind, my gears.
- 1:01:16It's a multitude of gears that really got me wrong at that
- 1:01:20particular time in the morning. And yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:22Shame when you go. I don't feel like if Ioffer
- 1:01:27someone a coffee in my head, I'm not going, oh great, I'm going
- 1:01:30to get one back from this person.
- 1:01:31No, no, no, neither do I OK, normally it's just I was already
- 1:01:34indebted to this person because this person always goes and gets
- 1:01:37coffee and I very rarely see yes.
- 1:01:39I very rarely say yes. But on this particular morning,
- 1:01:42I had a very, very long weekend of actually no sleep.
- 1:01:45So when I thought that was like, I need a coffee, I know they're
- 1:01:47going to want one because they always get me one.
- 1:01:49Let me go and do the nice thing and just tell them I'm getting
- 1:01:52them a coffee. Was not expecting this other
- 1:01:54person to absolutely need a decaf at 7:00 in the morning.
- 1:01:58To start their day sabotage. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:01Have you? Have you got any others that you
- 1:02:03need to get off your chest? Not for now.
- 1:02:04Fantastic. In which case we can move on to
- 1:02:08what seems to be a new placeholder in the past.
- 1:02:11I'm kind of enjoying it, which is why we've done it.
- 1:02:12The food element that needs a better name, it needs a better
- 1:02:15name. So if there's any sponsors that
- 1:02:17want to come in and provide their name and the providing
- 1:02:21team, yeah, yeah, we'll talk to the marketing team, see who they
- 1:02:23know. But we we went to Sainsbury's
- 1:02:26today and we decided to see if we could put together the
- 1:02:29highest protein mail mail that we could for anybody that's
- 1:02:34interested. Which is most people, I'm sure.
- 1:02:36Which is. Absolutely.
- 1:02:37Most people. Where do you want to start?
- 1:02:40We've got to go main course, surely?
- 1:02:42Really, I'm just going to leave that to the end, All right,
- 1:02:43backwards. Perfect, let's do the drink.
- 1:02:45That was so wrong. OK.
- 1:02:47So we'll start with the drain. That's the dynamic the most.
- 1:02:50People would expect yes, so we have got a protein shake,
- 1:02:53chocolate protein shake, 25 grams protein.
- 1:02:56You fit, you fit or actually there's an umlaut on there.
- 1:03:00You fit, you fit a fit. So do you want to try this?
- 1:03:05Let's go. Because I know for a fact, and
- 1:03:08and some of you might not know, Charles absolutely loves Sheikh
- 1:03:11and Adda. At this point, it's a travesty
- 1:03:14that Sheikh and Adda don't sponsor him.
- 1:03:16But Sheikh and Adda have also brought out their protein
- 1:03:19version of their milkshake, so they have a oh.
- 1:03:21He's shaking his head. In fact, I'm not going to say
- 1:03:25that. OK, he's withdrawn his comment
- 1:03:27that he was going to say, but Sheikh and Adda did bring out a
- 1:03:30protein drink that we were drinking a lot of.
- 1:03:35How does EU fit? EU fit?
- 1:03:37Right. I'm comparing it to shake
- 1:03:38another sure, which is arguably one of the best chocolate milks
- 1:03:41you can buy, if not the best it's not even close to shake
- 1:03:45another chocolate milk my try, but it's it's what I would
- 1:03:50expect from any chocolate flavored protein drink that I
- 1:03:55buy in the supermarket. It's not great, I.
- 1:03:58Literally looked at the bottle and one of the words that's in
- 1:04:00bold is oat fiber and that. It's it tastes fiber like what's
- 1:04:07the word I'm looking for? It's just it's this doesn't have
- 1:04:11much substance. It's a new watery, isn't it?
- 1:04:13And do you know what this is? This is fine.
- 1:04:15When I see someone buy one of these after the gym, I
- 1:04:19immediately assume you're new. You're new here.
- 1:04:22You you have told yourself you need to have.
- 1:04:24You don't. You don't.
- 1:04:26Yeah. Especially.
- 1:04:26Yeah. No.
- 1:04:27Not good. Why did you shake your head
- 1:04:28about shake another? Because I don't like their
- 1:04:30protein. Really.
- 1:04:32Yeah, it's not a good thing. No, obviously not.
- 1:04:34And like chocolate milk, by the way, chocolate milk is a
- 1:04:36supplement. Yeah, is actually.
- 1:04:38Those work out, Yeah. Can't be beaten.
- 1:04:40Yeah, there's actually loads of studies about it.
- 1:04:41And same as squares. Bars.
- 1:04:43It's their studies about squares.
- 1:04:44People are trying to beat squares bars as a fuelling.
- 1:04:47Well, I think I saw that going around.
- 1:04:48Yeah, I'm struggling to open this.
- 1:04:50Do you mind opening this? Next is the snack.
- 1:04:53We were really worried for a while because we quickly figured
- 1:04:58out that the egg was the sort of the egg pot of two eggs was
- 1:05:03looking like it was going to be the best.
- 1:05:05But obviously they're de shelled.
- 1:05:06And Charles took one look and was like, I'm not eating that.
- 1:05:10And we were kind of at this juxtaposition where I either I
- 1:05:13was going to have to eat boiled eggs on camera or we were just
- 1:05:17going to pretend that we didn't find them.
- 1:05:18But fortunately, Charles found this protein yogurt, which is 18
- 1:05:23grams, 18 grams, 5050 casein way.
- 1:05:27Can you tell that it's 5050 casein way?
- 1:05:29I can tell it doesn't taste good.
- 1:05:31Really, Strawberry? Flavour OK, I hope I didn't like
- 1:05:38skew your judgement. Doesn't taste like yogurt.
- 1:05:42It's like it's actually not bad. It's like it's soapy.
- 1:05:45I wouldn't. But of course I'd eat it and I'd
- 1:05:47I'd drink that protein shake. But yeah, is it good?
- 1:05:49I don't know if I. Would drink the protein shake?
- 1:05:51Really. No, especially if it wasn't as
- 1:05:53cold as possible. Yeah, but would that it's just
- 1:05:57that's kind of like. But I would I would happily
- 1:05:59finish there, just that's OK. What are you doing this for?
- 1:06:02You're doing this for maximal protein intake.
- 1:06:04Yeah, In which case I would say that that's not bad.
- 1:06:06I'd say the drink for me for maximal protein intake, still
- 1:06:10not worth considering the fact that it's in a meal deal.
- 1:06:12I would consider getting a different drink and going and
- 1:06:14buying one that I like that's not in the meal deal.
- 1:06:16So what have you spent 395 on this?
- 1:06:19Something like that, yeah, 85395, yeah.
- 1:06:23We do the cost analysis breakdown.
- 1:06:24Yeah, we we got to do the. The main course.
- 1:06:27Here we go. So the main course I actually
- 1:06:30asked you on the way back to the meal deal section to do this.
- 1:06:33Do Sainsbury's do triple sandwiches?
- 1:06:36I was under the impression they didn't.
- 1:06:37I know Tesco do, but Sainsbury's have hit us with the classic.
- 1:06:42The Sainsbury's we went to, I'm sorry.
- 1:06:44It was about Sainsbury's. The selection was not good.
- 1:06:46Not not ideal, but the classic triple classic.
- 1:06:52Absolutely classic. I've never bought this before.
- 1:06:54I everyone should be thinking about what they think would be
- 1:06:58in a three sandwich classic. Three different sandwiches in
- 1:07:01the UK like. The most classic, The most.
- 1:07:03Classic chicken and bacon? Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:07:08I don't think that would be my classic.
- 1:07:09I'd say it's a classic. It is a.
- 1:07:11Classic. It is like OK fine.
- 1:07:14Ham and cheese. For sure, that's a classic.
- 1:07:16For sure, that's the most classic.
- 1:07:18I would then probably say based on the fact and don't ask me why
- 1:07:21I know this, I would say BLT. It's too close to the chicken
- 1:07:27and bacon. Yeah.
- 1:07:28But the reason I say that I would expect that to be in the
- 1:07:30classic triple is did you know that the BLT is the most sold
- 1:07:33sandwich in the UK? That doesn't surprise me.
- 1:07:36That doesn't surprise me either. You'd put it in the classic
- 1:07:38triple egg and crass Egg and crass makes up this last classic
- 1:07:44triple. Egg egg zic me out on a good
- 1:07:47day. So this is not this this is not
- 1:07:49looking good for me. I.
- 1:07:50Can genuinely say with all honesty I was not a bully in
- 1:07:52school. However there was a kid in our
- 1:07:54class who ate egg and Crest sandwiches and he was bullied by
- 1:07:58you. No, but I, I.
- 1:08:01Maybe This is why I don't. Put so much effort into stopping
- 1:08:03it as I maybe would have done if he'd had a normal sandwich.
- 1:08:07That's that's completely comedic.
- 1:08:09That's not true, but Egg and Crest is does not deserve to be
- 1:08:14in this box. Absolutely.
- 1:08:15Like what? Surely some maybe it just
- 1:08:18doesn't work with Tuna Tuna's more classic.
- 1:08:21Tuna's more classic. Tuna's too tough to put in.
- 1:08:24A Yeah, well, that's yeah. So is freaking mashed up egg I.
- 1:08:28Mean eggs actually fine. Like egg is fine?
- 1:08:31I don't know. Cress is nothing.
- 1:08:33Cress is a bit of a leaf. But put the two together.
- 1:08:35What the fuck are we doing here? Are we going to try them?
- 1:08:38You won't get a. I was going to rock paper
- 1:08:40scissors you to try the egg and grass.
- 1:08:42OK, let's do it. Again, that's the one of one
- 1:08:44you're going to rock, paper, scissors go.
- 1:08:45So you have to be on YouTube for this, Yeah.
- 1:08:47Because. We're not going to say who won.
- 1:08:49That person is just going to have to.
- 1:08:51Enjoy watching. Wait, so it's rock paper
- 1:08:53scissors? Shoot.
- 1:08:55OK, yeah. OK.
- 1:08:57On shoot you. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:58OK, Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot.
- 1:09:02Some I'll meet in the sun. Help yourself, Sir, don't.
- 1:09:07Have to eat all of it. You need to take a bite out of
- 1:09:11the middle. No corner bite middle.
- 1:09:13Yeah, in While Charles does this, I'm going to give you an
- 1:09:16interesting fact as we're rudely interrupted by Pod Dog, who's
- 1:09:19obviously decided that food is what he's interested in.
- 1:09:22Theo out, Sir. So that was that was the your
- 1:09:28reward for watching on YouTube. You get to see Theo it actually
- 1:09:32it doesn't look that bad. No, I don't think it will be
- 1:09:35that bad. Interestingly though, for those
- 1:09:37that were watching, Charles went scissors.
- 1:09:39I went rock. I was told in year 10 in a
- 1:09:42psychology thing that nearly everyone goes scissors and I
- 1:09:47don't know why, but people go scissors.
- 1:09:49I have, since that day, always gone rock.
- 1:09:52You're always, always gone rock and I have won far too many
- 1:09:57games for that. So just be chance.
- 1:09:58You shouldn't have given that away.
- 1:09:59I shouldn't have done, but if you're ever doing rock, paper,
- 1:10:01scissors for those that really need it, if your life's ever on
- 1:10:04the line, go rock people, go scissors first.
- 1:10:06I hate to admit it. Yeah.
- 1:10:08For what is it? Would you put that in your
- 1:10:10classic triple? No, no.
- 1:10:12Well, for those that are wondering, the protein content
- 1:10:15of the classic triple remembering the reason that
- 1:10:17we're actually here is per pack 33.4g of protein.
- 1:10:24Now for Sainsbury's, that is good.
- 1:10:26We spend some time looking through the sandwiches.
- 1:10:27I will say obviously again. Basically like 10 grams per
- 1:10:30little segment of sandwich. Yeah, half sandwich, which is,
- 1:10:32which is pretty good. There are higher alternatives in
- 1:10:35different supermarkets, I know for a fact, because again the
- 1:10:38triples that you can get in other supermarkets.
- 1:10:40And higher alternatives in Sainsbury's, just different
- 1:10:42Sainsbury's because that option, the options they had were, yeah.
- 1:10:45And I think it was just. Host lunch, surely?
- 1:10:48But we'll also add that we have gone to the basic option.
- 1:10:51We've not known for the extravagant meal deals where you
- 1:10:53spend like 5 or 6 lbs. No, we didn't give any to Pod
- 1:10:58Dog, who's now giving Charles the evil eyes and disappointment
- 1:11:01eyes. Anyway, we move on.
- 1:11:05If you guys have got better suggestions or you think you've
- 1:11:07hacked the perfect meal deal, then absolutely let us know what
- 1:11:10you think that looks like and we'll give it a try.
- 1:11:13We'll test it out, we'll rate your meal bill and we'll go from
- 1:11:15there. But the classic thing we always
- 1:11:18do at this point in the podcast is you do a game, it's my turn,
- 1:11:23and I'm concerned by how much you say you're looking forward
- 1:11:25to this game because that usually backfires massively for
- 1:11:27me. I can't claim this to be an
- 1:11:31original idea, I stole it off something I saw on on TikTok,
- 1:11:37but I'll put our own spin on it. OK, so I'm going to do my best
- 1:11:42to explain it. You may have even seen it before
- 1:11:44and we're just going to go and see how it see how it plays out.
- 1:11:47I guess so the currency we're going to use is dollars because
- 1:11:52dollars just sounds better and you have dollars any, any dollar
- 1:11:55doesn't mean. Any dollar bill?
- 1:11:56Cool. So I'm going to give you an
- 1:11:58allowance. Of. $12.00.
- 1:12:02To. Have you've seen this before?
- 1:12:04I I think I'm well, potentially It depends where this goes.
- 1:12:07Right, there's four questions. OK, now each question has 5
- 1:12:13answers. Right now the answers are
- 1:12:16they're not right, they're not wrong, they're just creating a
- 1:12:19situation and you want to get the best situation for you.
- 1:12:22And it will make more sense when we start doing it.
- 1:12:24Now you have to spend money on all of the questions, right?
- 1:12:28Right. So you can't just use all of
- 1:12:31your money. You need to spend some money on
- 1:12:34the question in some capacity. Just the options get more or
- 1:12:37less expensive. So we're just going to do it and
- 1:12:40we're going to see what happens. But you've got $12.00 to spend.
- 1:12:43$12.00 right? So if you're playing at home,
- 1:12:48have a have a play along. If you don't like high rocks,
- 1:12:51could be in trouble. Oh.
- 1:12:52OK, good. So you're doing high rocks,
- 1:12:56double s. Right.
- 1:12:58Who's your partner going to be? OK, for $1.00, you can do it
- 1:13:04with Amy. OK?
- 1:13:05Now for anyone who doesn't know, Amy is Angus's lovely
- 1:13:08girlfriend. Yep, for $2.00, which is a huge
- 1:13:12bargain. You could do it with me.
- 1:13:14OK for $3? I thought this was going to go,
- 1:13:17like, all the way into, like, Jennifer Lawrence.
- 1:13:23Like, I thought it was just going to go into, like, loads of
- 1:13:25people, though, famous women that I could deal with.
- 1:13:28I'm glad you haven't done that to me.
- 1:13:30OK, so you've always a trick then.
- 1:13:32Yeah, $3 Nick Bear. OK.
- 1:13:37Now we're getting to the business end for a whole $4.00.
- 1:13:40You could do it with the current reigning High Rocks World
- 1:13:43champion Tim Vienish for $4.00. So then to spend $5, you could
- 1:13:50do it with Jakob Ingebritsen. So for anyone who doesn't know,
- 1:13:54he's the current 5000m Olympic gold medalist.
- 1:13:58I think he also got 1500 meter gold in Tokyo in 2020, among a
- 1:14:02lot of other running medals. So he's pretty fast.
- 1:14:05So those are your options. Put some money on the table.
- 1:14:08What, what is the goal of this across the five questions?
- 1:14:11To do the best across all of them that I can.
- 1:14:14Whatever your metric of success is.
- 1:14:16OK, good time. Our time.
- 1:14:19Would when's this horror happening?
- 1:14:23OK, let's ignore that. I was basically going to say I'm
- 1:14:25trying to. I'm trying to.
- 1:14:27You're trying to shake Jacob in Good Britain and seize.
- 1:14:29Them. I'm trying to come up with an
- 1:14:30excuse as to why I'm not going to pick Amy.
- 1:14:32It's too soon. Amy's not ready yet.
- 1:14:35She would admit that I would actually pick you.
- 1:14:38Really. Yeah, I'd pick you over Nick
- 1:14:39Bear. I think as a as a double S duo,
- 1:14:42we would do better than if I was partnered up with Nick Bear
- 1:14:45tomorrow. And also, no offense to him, if
- 1:14:48he's watching this 105, your arguably actually slightly
- 1:14:53quicker than me, but like, not enough.
- 1:14:56Yeah, I I need, I need more from you.
- 1:14:57And I don't know how you race. Wow.
- 1:14:59OK, so I've spent $2.00 two dollars.
- 1:15:02I've only I've got 10 in the bank.
- 1:15:03Solid start three questions. So where are we going to do
- 1:15:07this? High rocks, so.
- 1:15:09Again, I like this. For $1.00 you can do it in
- 1:15:12Dublin. Notorious for a bad course?
- 1:15:15I don't know where I heard that, but it's notorious.
- 1:15:18Just notorious isn't it? All you need to know is
- 1:15:20notoriously bad. I think it was the one where it
- 1:15:22had like 4 different lengths. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:25I don't know. For $2.00.
- 1:15:27Berlin. Oh, OK.
- 1:15:29Fast course. Yeah, Rainy course.
- 1:15:32Very rainy course. #3 for $3. Copenhagen.
- 1:15:38And. The only reason I chose
- 1:15:40Copenhagen was once I heard Jake Williamson say it was a fast
- 1:15:43course, so I was like, Christ, it must be quick.
- 1:15:45But then I realized that every course is fast for Jake
- 1:15:48Williamson because he's rapid. So I don't know if that actually
- 1:15:51has any any sort. Of I know a few, I know a few
- 1:15:54other. People that said it's fast have.
- 1:15:56Have gone there and their times have been above their other
- 1:15:59times. OK, done.
- 1:16:00Cool, so there's Copenhagen for $3.00 so it might be a steal.
- 1:16:03But for $4.00 you could race at the London XL with the new
- 1:16:07layout with the 1K loop. That's been K that is big.
- 1:16:10Yeah, that's big for $4.00. Now $5 is a curveball, Mumbai.
- 1:16:18And you know why? You know why?
- 1:16:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:23So for anyone who doesn't know, Mumbai is a less established
- 1:16:26location to race high rocks. So as a result, the times are on
- 1:16:29average slightly slower and as a result it's a little bit easier
- 1:16:33to qualify for World Champs Big. Time.
- 1:16:36Big time. I think we are spending another
- 1:16:41$2.00. We're going off to Berlin,
- 1:16:44partly because it is a fast course.
- 1:16:46We we've seen that and obviously it's fast because for everyone
- 1:16:50doesn't necessarily make qualifying world champs any
- 1:16:52easier. I'm going to bank on the fact
- 1:16:54that it might rain. It might not rain.
- 1:16:56However, there's two things this I want to run it because I like
- 1:17:00the idea of running in and out of planes.
- 1:17:02I mean, we're going back to the engineering.
- 1:17:04I like planes. But the other thing is, I hope
- 1:17:08it does rain while make other people slower.
- 1:17:12For one, yeah, I feel like we're hard nosed.
- 1:17:14We're going to run through that, sure, But also.
- 1:17:17The plucky Brits. You know what happened at the
- 1:17:18wobbles? Oh, you got rest.
- 1:17:20You get free rest. We can let as many people go as
- 1:17:23we want. We're going to come into that
- 1:17:24thing fresh as hell and we're going to do the quickest wobble
- 1:17:28split in the world and then we might qualify.
- 1:17:29There's probably a loophole where it's like they've actually
- 1:17:32just fixed the course since since last year.
- 1:17:34And then there's there's a roof over the wobbles.
- 1:17:36It's all inside. Yeah.
- 1:17:37All right. Cool.
- 1:17:38So you've only spent $4.00, four dollars.
- 1:17:40Wow, you're doing well. I can't wait to splash the cash
- 1:17:42now. What shoes will you be racing
- 1:17:45in? What shoes?
- 1:17:46For $1.00 you can race in flip flops.
- 1:17:49OK, for $2.00 you can wear your trusty Jordan 1 loads.
- 1:17:54Yeah. For $3, they're probably sat
- 1:17:56downstairs. You can race in your Saucony
- 1:17:58Hurricanes. They're boats frame on that
- 1:18:01doesn't. They're great to run in for long
- 1:18:02distances, but they are boats. All right, so for a whole $4.00
- 1:18:08you can race in roller skates. Oh, rapid, now we're moving.
- 1:18:12Rapid and for $5 you can wear Adios Pro Fours.
- 1:18:17OK, we're spending $4.00. We're going on roller skates.
- 1:18:20Really. Yeah.
- 1:18:22Wow. Think about it.
- 1:18:23I reckon you can go faster on roller skates when you get good
- 1:18:25at them. We've got eight.
- 1:18:26Oh yeah, sure. But also.
- 1:18:28You're assuming I've got roller skates as well.
- 1:18:30We both do OK. Yeah, there's no way I'm having
- 1:18:32them just waiting for you. Loophole.
- 1:18:36Think about the lack of leg fatigue.
- 1:18:37Yeah, for sure. Oh, but do you reckon you can do
- 1:18:41wall balls and roller skates and push a sled and RIP?
- 1:18:44That's a problem. No, no, no, it's fine because on
- 1:18:47the front of them they usually have brakes.
- 1:18:49OK, so you're like up on their toes?
- 1:18:51So like, and people do toe wobbles, they they, you know.
- 1:18:54Is there actually there must be a rule in the High Rocks rule
- 1:18:57book that you can't do in rows? You can take your shoes off and
- 1:18:59you can cross the line and as long as you carry them across
- 1:19:01the line, you can take your shoes off at the wall.
- 1:19:02Surely there's something that says you can't roller skate.
- 1:19:05That's a loophole. Maybe we're going.
- 1:19:06Maybe we're going to Berlin this year.
- 1:19:09We're going to be rapid. Yeah.
- 1:19:12Start practicing. Roll your heads.
- 1:19:13Yeah cool. Now there's a disclaimer before
- 1:19:17the last one OK because if you have any leftover money, we're
- 1:19:22going to put you into a wild card round.
- 1:19:24OK, so there's a there's a bonus category and by So for now
- 1:19:28you've. Spent $8 I think.
- 1:19:29You've got loads. I've got loads, I've got $4.
- 1:19:31So just just bear that in mind. You might want to spend it all,
- 1:19:35or you might want to save some. When's your start time?
- 1:19:40Oh. OK, for $1.00 you can race at
- 1:19:439:00 PM. That's so classic of high rocks.
- 1:19:47For $2.00 you could race at 7:30 AM.
- 1:19:50OK, for $3 you could race at 8:30 PM.
- 1:19:56For $4.00, the real money 2:30 PM.
- 1:20:01Or for $5, you could have the lovely AM slot of 10 AM.
- 1:20:05Well, I can't have 10 AM. Because you have no more, no
- 1:20:08more money. But are you going to?
- 1:20:10Are you going to smash all your cash and miss out on the wild
- 1:20:15card round? OK, so do you know what?
- 1:20:23This might surprise some people. I'm going to go for the 9:00 PM
- 1:20:26slot. Wow.
- 1:20:28Because thinking about it, my biggest complaint so far with
- 1:20:32like the the men's, you've just laughed because I've got money
- 1:20:35leftover. Don't like that I The biggest
- 1:20:39complaint about the men's Pro is that it is late in the day.
- 1:20:42My biggest complaint with that usually is the fact that I have
- 1:20:44been working and filming leading up to that.
- 1:20:47So I'm absolutely knackered by that pumpkin because I've been
- 1:20:49on my feet. If I had nothing else to.
- 1:20:51Do you'd be chilling. I train and perform best in the
- 1:20:55evening, so I'm actually good with that.
- 1:20:57OK, I hope you are too because you're obviously having to race
- 1:20:59it with me. I will just spend the whole day
- 1:21:01stressing. Don't worry about me, that's
- 1:21:03fine. So you've got what, $3.00 left?
- 1:21:09Yes, $3.00 left. Now the other disclaimer that I
- 1:21:13didn't tell you about to. Spend all of it.
- 1:21:14You have to spend all of. It OK, great.
- 1:21:16All right, so let me talk you through your options.
- 1:21:20Just so you know what you could have had for $1.00 you could
- 1:21:24have got the sportograph photography pack to remember
- 1:21:26your special day. OK, Yeah, for $2.00 you could
- 1:21:32have had an intra workout gel. Oh, that might have been nice.
- 1:21:35That might have been nice. But what you're getting for $3?
- 1:21:39Wait, tell me what 4 and 5 dollars?
- 1:21:40OK, fine. For $4.00 we could have skipped
- 1:21:43the first run. Oh.
- 1:21:45OK, been good. That would have been good.
- 1:21:47Roller skates as well. We'd have been rocking.
- 1:21:49Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:49And then for $5 we could have got Nitro boosts on our roller
- 1:21:55skates. But what?
- 1:21:58What what you have, not me what you have?
- 1:22:02Oh wow, for. $3 is a personalized BFA bag.
- 1:22:08No one has to win. To put your roller skates in.
- 1:22:10Built for athletes bags, there is nothing that you can't fit in
- 1:22:14them. That is so true.
- 1:22:16Amazing, I can see of them. I could probably even bring Amy
- 1:22:19out with me thanks to that bag. No, that was that was good.
- 1:22:22Actually, I like that. I might I might bring that back
- 1:22:24for you in a in a scenario setting I'm.
- 1:22:27Hoping at some at some point I get the flag game.
- 1:22:29I think I did it where I at? Yeah, I like that, I think.
- 1:22:32Yeah, the flag game before you mentioned it, unbeatable at Flag
- 1:22:35knowledge. Yeah, I think, I think I did OK
- 1:22:38AB I was quite happy with the. So you're doing double s with me
- 1:22:44in Berlin at 9:00 PM at 9:00 PM. We've always got.
- 1:22:49Sick. So I have to wear the BFA bag as
- 1:22:51I go around. Safety precaution.
- 1:22:54No, that would, I reckon that would be good.
- 1:22:56I'd actually do that. Yeah, that more.
- 1:22:58Yeah. The only the, the only thing
- 1:23:00that I nearly changed my answer on was Copenhagen, because
- 1:23:03Copenhagen, it was a sick city when I went there a couple of
- 1:23:06weeks ago, but. Irrelevant now course speed
- 1:23:09because you've got roller skating.
- 1:23:10Yeah, and and in hindsight, I don't think I would have saved
- 1:23:14my to the last round. No offence but I might have
- 1:23:17spent $2.00 on getting Tim Weinish as my partner.
- 1:23:23Although yeah, offence taken, he.
- 1:23:24Doesn't look like he's a guy that could rock roller.
- 1:23:27Skates. I don't know.
- 1:23:28I don't think so. Never judge a book by its.
- 1:23:30Cover. He's too skinny for me to trust
- 1:23:32those ankles. They're gone.
- 1:23:34Ankles are gone. Amazing.
- 1:23:37Well, yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed that game.
- 1:23:39I'd be interested to know what the listeners spend their money
- 1:23:42on. For those of you that don't know
- 1:23:44Amy, I imagine none of you chose her.
- 1:23:46Bless her. But if you did, let me know and
- 1:23:49I will keep. But I want you.
- 1:23:52But yeah, please. Do money wells.
- 1:23:54Firm, do you leave your comments and let us know what you'd have
- 1:23:57spent your money on? I can't remember what I asked
- 1:23:59for your input on earlier more Oh yeah, more documentaries.
