- 0:00Did you know that up to 60% of people with Parkinson's say that
- 0:03fatigue is their most disabling symptom, even more than tremors?
- 0:08Well, let me tell you, I believe it.
- 0:10I've had days where my body just shut down out of nowhere.
- 0:14One minute I was laughing at a family dinner, and the next I
- 0:16felt like somebody pulled the plug out of my batteries.
- 0:19I sat there staring at my plate of mashed potatoes and I'm
- 0:22thinking I might actually fall asleep right here, right now in
- 0:26this gravy. Now does that sound familiar?
- 0:30Well, fatigue doesn't knock politely.
- 0:32It kicks down the door, it eats your snacks, and then it makes
- 0:34itself at home. And today I'm going to share my
- 0:375 real life hacks for beating Parkinson's fatigue.
- 0:40Now these are things that I actually use in my daily life
- 0:44and stick around to the very end because I've got a brand new
- 0:47Bryce ISM for you and one that completely changed the way that
- 0:51I think about energy and fatigue.

- 1:36reminder that you're not alone in this journey.
- 1:39Now, today's episode, beating Parkinson's fatigue, my 5 must
- 1:42try tricks. I want to dive right into it
- 1:45because it's that important. Now.
- 1:48This is what I call the 20/20/20 recharge rule.
- 1:52OK, 20/20/20 recharge rule. Now, one of the sneakiest
- 1:56mistakes I used to make was ignoring the early signs of
- 2:00fatigue. I'd push through thinking I was
- 2:02tough, only to crash harder later.
- 2:04So I started using what I call again, the 2020 recharge rule.
- 2:08OK, every 20 minutes of activity, I stop for 20 seconds
- 2:12and I do something. I look 20 feet away.
- 2:15I stretch, I roll out my shoulders.
- 2:17I just breathe, right? And how do I remember?
- 2:21Well, I set my phone to buzz every 20 minutes.
- 2:24It's like having a coach tap me on the shoulder and say, hey,
- 2:27Bryce, take a break before your body makes before your body
- 2:31makes you right. Once I tried it with laundry.
- 2:34Yeah. Normally I'd go until I was
- 2:35wiped out and the basket was like, half, you know, half
- 2:39finished for days. But with a little pauses, I got
- 2:42through the whole load without feeling like I'd run a marathon.
- 2:45OK, so it's not about being lazy.
- 2:48It's about spending your energy smart.
- 2:51OK, spending your energy smart. Now, if you're a sports player,
- 2:54think of it again, it's like you play hockey in Canada.
- 2:57We play hockey. You go out and you do 30 minutes
- 2:59hard and you come back and you rest for a couple of shifts and
- 3:02then you go back out and you come back in, go back out and
- 3:05come back in. So what you're doing is the
- 3:06coach is tapping the shoulder saying come on in now, take a
- 3:09breather. And then I'm going to send you
- 3:10right back out when you got some energy back.
- 3:13And that's a, that's a really smart trick.
- 3:14Now here's another one. And this one I learned the hard
- 3:18way. And I've talked about this a
- 3:20lot, but protein can mess with levodopa absorption, right?
- 3:24That's the science, the reality. And I'm going to use bacon here
- 3:28because people love when I use bacon.
- 3:29One time I had a giant bacon breakfast, right?
- 3:33I popped my meds and then spent the whole day moving like a
- 3:35zombie. Now I time my protein better,
- 3:39right? Heavier protein meals later in
- 3:41the day or I give myself a buffer around my meds.
- 3:45Now it doesn't mean I give up bacon.
- 3:47Come on. I love bacon.
- 3:48But I've learned. I've learned when to have bacon.
- 3:52OK. Sometimes I even adjust with an
- 3:55extra half a pill if I know I'm having a big steak or that bacon
- 3:59and that's what works for me. But always, you know, when it
- 4:02comes to your meds and leave it open and changes, always talk to
- 4:05your doctor. Again, I do not plan my meals
- 4:08around my meds. If I am having something heavy
- 4:11protein, I'll I'll either add an extra pill before just before I
- 4:15take it or to my dose just before I eat or after I'm done.
- 4:19And if for me, that's what works and my doctor's happy with it
- 4:22and I'm happy with it too. So always make sure you check
- 4:25with your doctor first. But I'll give you a tip, keep a
- 4:28simple food in Med journal. I know I'm big on journals and I
- 4:31probably, you know, you're probably thinking, Oh my God,
- 4:32another journal. Well, even jotting down what you
- 4:35ate and when you dosed can reveal patterns that explain why
- 4:39some days feel worse than others.
- 4:41Now when I figured this out, it felt like I finally had a little
- 4:45of my control back. It can take control of my life
- 4:47again and I'm going to in a future video.
- 4:51I'm working on a journal right now with all of these mini
- 4:54journals inside of it. So hopefully I'll be able to get
- 4:57into your hands so you can walk, you can journal everything
- 5:00right, just like I say and I'll and I'll actually do a video to
- 5:03walk you through it and see how you do it.
- 5:04So stay tuned. It's coming.
- 5:06Believe me, I'm doing kind of as fast as I can.
- 5:08So that's to come and in the comments, you know, in the
- 5:12comments, how is your fatigue? Are you battling fatigue as it
- 5:15is? I mean, we had a video last week
- 5:17and another episode last week that on fatigue.
- 5:20And I realized, man, I need to give you my, my, my tips on how
- 5:23to get out of the fatigue, not just talk about what fatigue is.
- 5:27So in the comments, how is your fatigue doing?
- 5:30And also, if you have any hacks along the way, make sure you put
- 5:32them in along the way because your comment could help somebody
- 5:36in the community. So let's move on to the third
- 5:39one. Now let's talk about naps.
- 5:41My buddy Brian loves naps. Well, with Parkinson's, naps are
- 5:44tricky. Too long and you wake up in a
- 5:46fog and too short and they don't do anything.
- 5:49So the sweet spot for me, it's around 15 to 25 minutes.
- 5:54And you know what? I would suggest people actually
- 5:56literally set a timer. You know, I know someone one
- 6:00time we skipped the timer and woke up three hours later
- 6:03drooling on the couch, meds out of whack.
- 6:05Completely useless, right? And I call that a hibernation
- 6:09nap. You don't want to take a
- 6:10hibernation nap, OK? You just want a quick recharge.
- 6:13So when, so, but when I control it.
- 6:16So I'm just talking from the first person.
- 6:18When, when? But when I keep it controlled, a
- 6:20quick recharge nap, it's like magic.
- 6:22It's like a software boot reboot for your brain.
- 6:26And if you're not sure what their sweet spot is, experiment.
- 6:30Try 15 minutes first, right? If you wake up groggy, adjust
- 6:34shorter for next time and find out what works for your body,
- 6:38you know, and you're just going to go up and down.
- 6:40I know we do this a lot, but it's you have to learn your
- 6:42body. You have to learn how you react
- 6:45to things. So, but set the timer even for
- 6:48naps, right? You follow, you feel yourself
- 6:50falling asleep, you know you're in your favorite chair, you're
- 6:52ready to go. Hit that 15 minute nap or 20
- 6:54minute nap and wake yourself up. We don't want to go too far.
- 6:57OK, so if any of this sounds familiar, hit that like button
- 7:02so more people can see the real sides of the real side of
- 7:05Parkinson's. And you know what?
- 7:07Again, like I said, share your own fatigue hacks in the
- 7:09comments. I read every comment, I respond
- 7:11to every comment, and every month I I do an actual episodes
- 7:16on questions in the comments. So I might feature yours on the
- 7:19next one. So make sure you get in there
- 7:21and let's let's start a conversation.
- 7:23OK? All right, let's go to hack #4.
- 7:26This is hack #4. This one feels backwards, OK?
- 7:29And it's this moving when you're already tired, but light
- 7:33movement actually gives me energy.
- 7:35OK, There was a day Carmen convinced me to go for a short
- 7:38walk when I just wanted to stay home on the couch.
- 7:41I grumbled all the way down the driveway like a little kid, but
- 7:46halfway through, I realized it felt better.
- 7:49Not cured, but looser and lighter.
- 7:52So even small moves help. Marching in place, rolling your
- 7:57shoulders, reaching for the ceiling, or just, you know, just
- 8:01walking to the mailbox. And sometimes the hardest part
- 8:05is just standing up. But once you do it, I'm telling
- 8:08you, it usually pays off. All right, now, hack #5 And this
- 8:13one's my favorite. You ready for this stack habits
- 8:17so you get double the benefit. Double down.
- 8:23For example, every morning I take my B12 while standing in
- 8:26front of my light therapy lamp, right?
- 8:28Vitamin boost and an energy cure all in one.
- 8:31And I thought of that myself. So some people stretch while the
- 8:35coffee brews, others listen to music while organizing their
- 8:38meds. But that's something you do is
- 8:41just double up, double down. So think about it, what's 1
- 8:44habit that you could stack? Share it below, put in the
- 8:47comments because your idea might be exactly what somebody needs.
- 8:50And I bet you there is a ton of different ones.
- 8:53What, what could you stack? Think about it, what could you
- 8:56stack? It's like doubling down.
- 8:58OK, now in my last video about fatigue warning signs, so many
- 9:02have left so many great comments and people share tricks like
- 9:08using medication apps for short resets, some more breaking,
- 9:13breaking housework into chunks instead of powering through it,
- 9:16and one viewer who swears by splashing ice cold water in
- 9:20their face midday. Now that's why I keep saying
- 9:24this is a community. I'll keep featuring your tips in
- 9:27future videos. So keep them coming because your
- 9:29voice matters and they're great tips.
- 9:32What were they again? Right?
- 9:34Using medication apps for short resets, breaking housework into
- 9:38chunks instead of trying to do it all at one time, and again,
- 9:42splashing cold water in your face midway through the day.
- 9:44It's just a routine. And it's something that that
- 9:47signals to your body that it's midday.
- 9:49It's not bedtime. OK, so now what about the
- 9:55science? So why is fatigue such a monster
- 9:58in Parkinson's? It's not just poor sleep, let's
- 10:02make that clear. It's dopamine depletion, a
- 10:05medication, side effects or even brain changes or even changes in
- 10:10your brain circuitry. Now here's an easy way to
- 10:15picture it. OK, so I like to break this
- 10:17down. Let's make it really simple.
- 10:19Dopamine is like gas in your car.
- 10:21OK, with Parkinson's, the tank empties faster and sometimes the
- 10:25gauge is broken. And that's why fatigue feels
- 10:28different than just being tired. And knowing that helps me.
- 10:33It reminds me that it's not my fault.
- 10:36Fatigue is part of Parkinson's. Hacks don't cure it by any
- 10:39stretch, but they do give you back a little control.
- 10:44Now remember I said I had a Bryce ISM for you?
- 10:48And here it is, thought the end of the video.
- 10:50But here it is. With Parkinson's, energy is like
- 10:54cash. Spend it wisely, save when you
- 10:57can, and invest in what matters most.
- 11:00Now. I came up with that after a day
- 11:04where I tried to do everything on my list and ended up doing
- 11:08nothing. I realized that I can't spend
- 11:11what I don't have, but if I plan my energy budget, I can make it
- 11:16last longer. Now.
- 11:17Some days I blow the budget, some days I invested well.
- 11:20But either way, I try not to beat myself up about it and I
- 11:25like to spend my energy doing things that I like to do.
- 11:28I'm not a big fan of cleaning the house.
- 11:30So I don't want to deplete my energy cleaning the house and
- 11:33lose my time with my wife or lose my time, you know, doing
- 11:37something with, with my buddies or only in a video.
- 11:41So there you go. So those are my five of my 5
- 11:45must try tricks for beating fatigue.
- 11:47Now in the comments, which one stood out to you?
- 11:50Or better yet, what's your secret fatigue hack?
- 11:52Drop in the comments. I'd love to feature it in a
- 11:54future video and get ready for Part 2 of this Med hack for real
- 11:59life series, navigating wearing off when your meds peak and
- 12:04plunge. And I'll share strategies that
- 12:06are going to help that help me survive those ups and downs.
- 12:09And that'll be on the next episode.
- 12:11And until next time, man, I love you guys.
- 12:14I love this community. Thank you for being with me.
