- 1:39Speaker 1: Hey, tolerators. This is to all the men I've tolerated
- 1:41Speaker 1: before with Nambly Katona, your weekly look at everyday misogyny.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You know what? I did it. I got myself together
- 1:48Speaker 1: and I am offering us a spooky season episode. And
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's with some of our favorite guests because they are
- 1:55Speaker 1: my spooky bitches. It's Elizabeth from our Taylor Swift episode,
- 2:00Speaker 1: our religion episode, and our 90s protagonist episode. And it's Darcy,
- 2:05Speaker 1: our female wrestler.
- 2:07Speaker 2: We're so glad to be here.
- 2:11Speaker 1: This all came about because elizabeth asked me if i
- 2:14Speaker 1: had ever met darcy i was like she's only been
- 2:16Speaker 1: on the show twice and now we have a group
- 2:18Speaker 1: chat called darcy is my friend because i thought.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I was doing everyone the biggest favor by introducing my
- 2:23Speaker 2: favorite people who then immediately were like dumb dumb dumb
- 2:28Speaker 2: dumb what's this To be fair, I listened to the
- 2:32Speaker 2: Taylor Swift.
- 2:32Speaker 3: You guys, honestly, now that I think about it, when
- 2:34Speaker 3: did the Taylor Swift episode come out?
- 2:37Speaker 1: In June, right before I went to Eros.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So I, you guys like kicked off like a whole
- 2:45Speaker 3: tizzy for me. And like, I was already like, in
- 2:50Speaker 3: Swifty land. But like, I would say I remember listening
- 2:53Speaker 3: to your guys podcast and just being like, wow, oh
- 2:55Speaker 3: my god.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Like, everything you guys were saying, I was, like, pointing
- 3:00Speaker 3: out stuff that I hadn't thought about, and then I
- 3:02Speaker 3: went back.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And listened to Midnight's, and it's, like, my favorite album
- 3:05Speaker 1: of hers.
- 3:06Speaker 2: This makes my heart so warm, and when I saw
- 3:09Speaker 2: this happening in real time, it would be, like, every
- 3:12Speaker 2: day that I would get a message in this thread
- 3:14Speaker 2: about the appreciation for Taylor Ellison's Swift Rising and one
- 3:17Speaker 2: individual that is also awesome, I just would feel like
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'm not a proud aunt. I don't have siblings that
- 3:23Speaker 2: have children, but that's kind of the feeling I imagine that, like,
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm not directly responsible for you having good taste, but
- 3:29Speaker 2: you're welcome because it's amazing. And now you're part of this,
- 3:32Speaker 2: like this awesome community. And it's, we're just such nerds.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It's so fun. So Taylor, um, and any other Swifties,
- 3:39Speaker 1: you let me know when we're starting the commune and
- 3:41Speaker 1: the cult, because I'm actively recruiting. I'll be there.
- 3:46Speaker 2: You need to buy an Island and we all need to, yeah.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Community garden and embroider dresses. And I'll be in charge
- 3:55Speaker 2: of PR.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Please. Me and Tree.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The real hero of the story. The real hero of
- 4:03Speaker 1: the story. Okay, so we're here to talk about spooky bitches.
- 4:08Speaker 1: We're going to be talking about the final girls and
- 4:11Speaker 1: our favorite good-for-her moments. So, should we talk first about
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Madonna versus the whore complex and Jennifer's body? Because
- 4:21Speaker 1: that's my favorite one to talk about. I mean, that
- 4:25Speaker 1: is just one of the.
- 4:27Speaker 2: most masterfully done sort of examples, I think, of so
- 4:33Speaker 2: many of the spaces that we enjoy discussing. We've got
- 4:37Speaker 2: queer horror, feminist horror, you know, lots of playing with
- 4:41Speaker 2: like gender politics and roles and also pretty, I think,
- 4:46Speaker 2: early in the narrative of that discussion overall. When did
- 4:51Speaker 2: that movie come out? It was I had just graduated
- 4:56Speaker 2: high school. I think it was pretty progressive and kind
- 5:01Speaker 2: of ahead of its time on a lot of fronts.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys feel the same way,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but I really revel in a sense of personal pride
- 5:10Speaker 2: when I see a thing and I'm like, well, that's genius.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And the rest of the world is like, it's absolute bullshit.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Here's why. There will be think pieces about what shit
- 5:20Speaker 2: this movie is. Then I just hang out for like
- 5:23Speaker 2: 10 years being like, I don't watch it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It's good.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And everyone's like, well, have you guys heard of this movie,
- 5:30Speaker 2: Jennifer's Body? It's so interesting. It's very, very prescient. I'm like,
- 5:36Speaker 2: she's like, oh my God, stop. Like this happened and
- 5:39Speaker 2: you didn't care.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And now here we are. It's sort of an allegory
- 5:42Speaker 1: for the problem at hand. I did that on Don't Worry, Darling.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I texted Jules from Berlin. The credits of Don't Worry, Darlene.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And I was like, so many men are going to
- 5:53Speaker 1: tell me that this is a bad movie.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Where do I fall on that? I think it's a
- 5:56Speaker 2: fascinating movie.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's a fascinating movie. You haven't seen it yet? I
- 6:01Speaker 1: liked it. I rewatched it. I really did like it
- 6:03Speaker 1: a lot. I've shown it to people.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And I know that, like, I have not met anyone
- 6:08Speaker 2: that's been lukewarm on that movie.
- 6:10Speaker 1: No, they either hate it or they love it. For
- 6:11Speaker 1: all the reasons, right, with the.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Production and the politics involved and all the tea that's
- 6:16Speaker 2: been spilled. met the harry styles of it all but
- 6:20Speaker 2: i love that.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Movie and people because i went like the day that
- 6:23Speaker 1: it opened because we were going to cover it yeah
- 6:26Speaker 1: on still comfy and i was like reaching out to
- 6:28Speaker 1: people and i was like no you don't understand it's
- 6:30Speaker 1: all of the things it could be categorized as a
- 6:33Speaker 1: horror movie and this is why we get to talk
- 6:35Speaker 1: about it it is literally all of the like doomsday
- 6:38Speaker 1: prepping i try to do for women where i'm like
- 6:40Speaker 1: don't let them get into a basement don't let them
- 6:42Speaker 1: talk like listen to joe rogan don't let them like
- 6:45Speaker 1: further isolate themselves they will take away your autonomy they
- 6:48Speaker 1: will make sure that you're a living doll they will
- 6:51Speaker 1: like take your whole identity and all of your money
- 6:54Speaker 1: and every moment of the movie I was like I
- 6:56Speaker 1: tell all of my friends this all the time and
- 6:59Speaker 1: men are going to tell me that this is a
- 7:01Speaker 1: bad movie and this is what happens when women get
- 7:03Speaker 1: in charge of thriller movies that they're dramatic.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I've heard far far and I've discussed this film fairly
- 7:11Speaker 2: frequently with people whose opinions I really trust and respect
- 7:14Speaker 2: in the film community I find that far more women
- 7:18Speaker 2: vehemently dislike this movie than men. Which I don't know
- 7:20Speaker 2: if that's anecdotal or says something about women. Look, it's
- 7:26Speaker 2: so layered because of the Olivia Wilde.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and fuck all of that for happening because
- 7:32Speaker 1: I would love to live in a timeline where Olivia
- 7:34Speaker 1: Wilde didn't get thrown to the wolves when it came
- 7:36Speaker 1: to the PR machine and that this movie just got
- 7:40Speaker 1: to be released. Can you guys give me some? I
- 7:43Speaker 1: can't even think of it. Darcy, it's the Florence Q.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Harry Styles movie with the 50s background to it.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Okay, and I think all I've heard is that Florence Q.
- 7:54Speaker 3: is like full on, we get like a full on
- 7:57Speaker 3: nude of her.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yes. We get to watch her have, Harry Styles performs
- 8:03Speaker 1: oral sex on her on basically a Thanksgiving dinner. It's
- 8:06Speaker 1: pretty awesome. It is pretty awesome. That would be really great.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Who would have thought? Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But yeah, it's a very divisive film. And I'll say
- 8:16Speaker 2: what I don't like. And we're so on time.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I'll say what I don't like about it. Here.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So if a man was making that movie and had
- 8:21Speaker 2: any kind of divorce drama happen during or decided to
- 8:24Speaker 2: date one of the starlets that's younger and whatever, I.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Will start singing Taylor Swift.
- 8:31Speaker 2: They would be celebrated. What's it like to brag about
- 8:35Speaker 2: raking in dollars and whatever? Like, it for real, though,
- 8:38Speaker 2: is like everyday misogyny. And like, to me, the fact
- 8:41Speaker 2: that women... are so quick because she's like a homewrecker.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Like all these things, there's just all this stuff in
- 8:47Speaker 2: the air about her personal life that as a person
- 8:50Speaker 2: who's had somewhat, well, I've been married twice. I don't
- 8:55Speaker 2: want to do this on podcast.
- 8:59Speaker 1: When you live a life.
- 9:00Speaker 2: That for any reason of your own doing or no,
- 9:04Speaker 2: that invites critique or attention, and then things you do
- 9:08Speaker 2: under the specter of that conversation are tainted and buy
- 9:13Speaker 2: public opinion and the like word of public opinion about
- 9:16Speaker 2: you fucking sucks because art exists in a neutral space
- 9:21Speaker 2: and this does not happen to men i wouldn't say
- 9:23Speaker 2: that florence q is a final girl but she does
- 9:26Speaker 2: have like these good for her moments say so yeah
- 9:30Speaker 2: i'm pretty and we can get to that too what
- 9:31Speaker 2: is our definition of the final goal because i had
- 9:33Speaker 2: to think about that a little bit.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Before I just went into, remember how pissed off I
- 9:37Speaker 1: was that people didn't like Don't Worry, Darling? My first
- 9:40Speaker 1: question is, let's get the base definition for the final
- 9:43Speaker 1: girl or good for her moment. What is a final girl?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Because I think that most moviegoers would just be like,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it's just the lady who's lucky enough to survive at
- 9:53Speaker 1: the end of it because she's just too pretty or
- 9:56Speaker 1: too pure to kill.
- 9:58Speaker 2: To me, the major question... was, is it a slasher
- 10:01Speaker 2: specific trope? Darcy, do you think it is specific to
- 10:05Speaker 2: the slasher genre?
- 10:07Speaker 1: No, I don't think so.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, so I think because, I think you,
- 10:13Speaker 3: it's all seeing her growth and you see, usually it's,
- 10:19Speaker 3: I feel like I don't like like the rules, you know, of,
- 10:23Speaker 3: you know, the 80s slashers were always like.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Oh, she's like an innocent virgin. But you have to
- 10:28Speaker 2: discuss them even today about movies because they subvert them.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And to understand the subversion, you know what I mean?
- 10:32Speaker 2: Like those rules will never leave the conversation.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Oh, and it's so it still is very like I
- 10:38Speaker 3: feel like it's getting like better in ways of like.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It's been bended and stretched in a way that's interesting.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But it's it's definitely like I feel like we need
- 10:47Speaker 3: to see her overcome something. Or, like, I mean, Carrie
- 10:51Speaker 3: is a good one, the best one, right? Like, just,
- 10:54Speaker 3: she's technically not a final girl.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Well, you know, I do like the final girl in
- 10:58Speaker 2: the movie, which we're left to speculate with that final
- 11:01Speaker 2: scene where the hand's in the grave. But that is,
- 11:06Speaker 2: there are those that it's, like, a little messier, where there's, like,
- 11:08Speaker 2: the protagonist that does win, for lack of a better term,
- 11:12Speaker 2: because they gave those that needed getting theirs. Like, and
- 11:17Speaker 2: I had a few come up like that. Like, I
- 11:18Speaker 2: want to say, Promising Young Woman, like, favorite final girl ever,
- 11:24Speaker 2: but homegirl, like, my girl died.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Because she starts the movie as the final girl.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Which is one reason I love that movie.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's almost her sequel, because there's been an entire movie's
- 11:37Speaker 1: worth of story plot that gets slowly. That's right. I
- 11:39Speaker 1: like that reading of it.
- 11:40Speaker 2: She was the final girl from, like, the first act,
- 11:43Speaker 2: and Nina didn't make it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that.
- 11:45Speaker 2: One thing I was thinking about with it is Darcy,
- 11:48Speaker 2: to piggyback on what you were saying, because I think
- 11:49Speaker 2: that's totally on the nose. It is a girl or
- 11:57Speaker 2: an individual that, because I'm a big fan of Nightmare
- 11:59Speaker 2: on Elm Street 2, an individual that displays what we
- 12:04Speaker 2: have classically and traditionally thought of as feminine characteristics in
- 12:08Speaker 2: the following senses. They are struggling with an internal something.
- 12:12Speaker 2: There's something going on in their life that maybe they're
- 12:13Speaker 2: not talking about with their friends and they're trying to
- 12:15Speaker 2: normalize Or sort of mask and enjoy all the whatever
- 12:19Speaker 2: high school or whatever it is we're doing. Typically, they're
- 12:21Speaker 2: younger as well, I've found in the genre. So there's
- 12:24Speaker 2: a struggle that then manifests or is sort of allegorical
- 12:28Speaker 2: to whatever big bad is out there. Like, this didn't
- 12:32Speaker 2: mean my list, but this is a good sort of
- 12:35Speaker 2: blueprint for how wide the net can be cast on
- 12:39Speaker 2: who we're talking about with final girls. Like, I would
- 12:41Speaker 2: consider Jay from It Follows a final girl. And that's
- 12:45Speaker 2: an invisible entity. that's it's it's sort of like the
- 12:48Speaker 2: thing like it's like there's not always a monster to
- 12:50Speaker 2: point to or a slasher that like might be behind
- 12:52Speaker 2: your shower curtain like and that's sort of sometimes the
- 12:55Speaker 2: more interesting story so I was a little looser with
- 12:59Speaker 2: mine to me it was like there were some monster
- 13:01Speaker 2: movies that came to mind there were supernatural.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Movies like to me I I was a little.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Surprised at how immediately I went to non-slashers for like
- 13:10Speaker 2: some of some classic final girls in my opinion I think.
- 13:14Speaker 3: The way that like you worded it and what um
- 13:18Speaker 3: sorry when we started talking about it Natalie was like
- 13:21Speaker 3: you said the good for her moments where I kind
- 13:23Speaker 3: of I honestly think if I went into this just
- 13:27Speaker 3: saying final girl I probably would have gone like okay
- 13:30Speaker 3: or traditional like Sidney Prescott like Lauren Strode and it's
- 13:35Speaker 3: like but also there's so many I feel like better,
- 13:39Speaker 3: you know, stories and movies that aren't, um, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 3: pressed out to push out to like eight movies. And
- 13:45Speaker 3: we still, they still can have that same effect. One
- 13:49Speaker 3: for me is, have you guys seen American Mary?
- 13:51Speaker 2: He's on my list. And it's like, probably will be
- 13:54Speaker 2: in the next two films I watch. That's coming up.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It really is. So I'll, I'll hit you back on that,
- 13:59Speaker 2: but I'm excited.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I love it.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Oh, I love the directors. I love the lead actor.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Like I'm, So went about everything on this film.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I think you're really going to like it. And definitely
- 14:12Speaker 3: would love to hear what you guys think.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Well, I love body horror.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I love feminist horror.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 3: I know.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Like, I like the Soska sister. Like, I don't know.
- 14:20Speaker 3: It's the Soska's, I think, best movie.
- 14:22Speaker 2: That's what I've heard. Yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I'm really interested.
- 14:25Speaker 1: When I tell you that a friend of mine recently said,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I'm starting Yellow Jackets for the first time. And I went...
- 14:33Speaker 1: I would literally wipe my own memory. I would give
- 14:35Speaker 1: so much.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I know.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I would carve out part of my brain to relight,
- 14:42Speaker 1: to experience Yellow Jackets for the first time again.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I'm like halfway through the second season and Michael was
- 14:49Speaker 3: like catching up and we were going to watch it together.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And then it's just kind of like all this time
- 14:53Speaker 3: has been passed and I'm like, I'm just going to
- 14:54Speaker 3: finish it without you. But I need like to be
- 14:57Speaker 3: in the perfect, like I think I'm going to wait
- 14:58Speaker 3: till after season Talk.
- 15:00Speaker 1: About final girls. It's these women. Number one, I read
- 15:03Speaker 1: a book and it was called Beauty Queens and it
- 15:06Speaker 1: was by Libba Bray. And it was what would happen
- 15:10Speaker 1: if a plane full of Miss Teen USA contestants crashed
- 15:15Speaker 1: on a deserted island and now it is Lord of
- 15:17Speaker 1: the Flies, but with Beauty Queens. And it had so
- 15:21Speaker 1: much really good, like millennial social commentary, like it had
- 15:25Speaker 1: footnotes that had that had like inside like jokes about
- 15:30Speaker 1: like well do you remember when we saw this all
- 15:32Speaker 1: on Seinfeld or whatever and it was so witty and
- 15:35Speaker 1: so well done that I knew I was gonna love
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yellow Jackets because I love Christina Ricci and Juliette.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Lewis yeah it was like just the cast is so
- 15:44Speaker 2: stacked so good.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I and To think about those final girls being like
- 15:50Speaker 1: we crawled and clawed out of the wilderness where we
- 15:54Speaker 1: may or may not have eaten our friends. To just
- 15:57Speaker 1: be like, yeah, I'll be a housewife. That'll be cool.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It'll be fine. It'll be okay. Shauna's the best.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Shauna's the best. Aw, she is absolutely the best. Melanie
- 16:08Speaker 2: Linsky is one of my favorite actresses or humans of
- 16:10Speaker 2: all time. I love her so much.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I think that's always it for me when it comes
- 16:14Speaker 1: to the final girls is their ability to endure. But
- 16:18Speaker 1: then to also just be thrown back into a normal society,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and we're like, what do you mean you don't know
- 16:23Speaker 1: how to do the PTA?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Well, but we never, what's so interesting about horror movies,
- 16:29Speaker 2: and I've always, since I was nine, watching my first
- 16:32Speaker 2: horror movies, like, I've always wondered, what, like, so, does
- 16:36Speaker 2: that whole, like, do, like, a happy ending, or do
- 16:38Speaker 2: you want the destruction of the earth? And I'm like,
- 16:40Speaker 2: kind of either will do the same thing to me,
- 16:42Speaker 2: because when the lights come up and sunrises and woods
- 16:46Speaker 2: blows all like oh it is so busy like all
- 16:50Speaker 2: i can think is like what about her tomorrow like
- 16:54Speaker 2: was she gonna go like get a job at a
- 16:55Speaker 2: furthest like she's bitch she's fucked like that's like a
- 17:00Speaker 2: i don't even know how you can like right this
- 17:02Speaker 2: is obvious question but like so to me there is
- 17:03Speaker 2: no happy ending like these final roles like Which is
- 17:06Speaker 2: why I love the idea of, like, I haven't read
- 17:08Speaker 2: it and I want to so bad. The Grady Hendrix
- 17:10Speaker 2: Final Goal Support Group.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I've read it. It's really good.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I want to. That's on my list, too.
- 17:14Speaker 3: But it's on my list. I think I have it
- 17:16Speaker 3: next to my stack of books that I never get to.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I have those all over my house, literally. They're now
- 17:25Speaker 2: cat beds.
- 17:26Speaker 1: The thing about... Yellow Jackets and Final Girls and the
- 17:30Speaker 1: Final Girls Support Club thinking about the next... Have you
- 17:33Speaker 1: guys watched? It just came out on Thursday. So if
- 17:36Speaker 1: you haven't, I implore you to do it because it's
- 17:38Speaker 1: just good 80s fun with a millennial lens. I watched
- 17:42Speaker 1: Totally Killer last night off of Prime. I just got
- 17:46Speaker 1: suggested that from someone. Yes. Where is it? it's on
- 17:50Speaker 1: prime right yeah yeah and it has like who is
- 17:53Speaker 1: it that's in it because i was like sabrina from
- 17:55Speaker 1: the chilling tales of adventures yeah karen and chip yeah
- 18:00Speaker 1: so anyways she's like she's literally just had like i
- 18:04Speaker 1: think it's in the preview that her mom gets slaughtered
- 18:07Speaker 1: and then she goes to school the next day and
- 18:09Speaker 1: i texted my friend i was like why the fuck
- 18:12Speaker 1: is she at school I was like, if my mom dies,
- 18:14Speaker 1: I'm never, I go, if my mom's murdered, I'm never
- 18:16Speaker 1: going to anything ever again.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I unsubscribe from society. I unsubscribe. You're just like, geometry.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And then she's like sitting through the gym teacher, like
- 18:27Speaker 1: fucking giving a self-defense class. And I'm like, no. Also,
- 18:32Speaker 1: now we're just like, we will, let's get right.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I do have to say in this conversation, it would
- 18:38Speaker 2: be so remiss not to mention the movie, The Final Girls.
- 18:43Speaker 2: if you haven't seen that it's so good the horror
- 18:45Speaker 2: comedy that's actually very touching and.
- 18:48Speaker 3: We just re-watched it for like i haven't seen it
- 18:50Speaker 3: since it came out i.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Will truly say that i am a sicko and like
- 18:55Speaker 1: part of the adrenaline rush for me in horror like
- 18:58Speaker 1: i loved bodies bodies bodies because no.
- 19:00Speaker 2: One's gonna look at me i re-watched that one a lot.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Like a crack pot when i'm just bursting into giggles
- 19:06Speaker 1: because lee pace is in it i'm like what are.
- 19:08Speaker 2: You Everything about that movie, and it grew on me, like, mold.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You guys.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Like, I disliked it.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Part of the thing I think that it is about
- 19:17Speaker 1: horror and why it'll send tingles from my toes to
- 19:21Speaker 1: my head, while, like, you know, good horror, that's just, like,
- 19:25Speaker 1: really tense. Just, like, barbarian-level tense, when the entire time
- 19:29Speaker 1: you're like, uh-uh, don't stop it.
- 19:33Speaker 2: That's so genius of them.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I just tingle from my toes to my head. And
- 19:38Speaker 1: I think it's because like, I'm always like my life
- 19:41Speaker 1: as a cisgendered woman living in a world of men
- 19:47Speaker 1: has prepared me at every point of the way to
- 19:50Speaker 1: be watching a horror movie and to just be screaming
- 19:53Speaker 1: in my head, girl, no, stop it. We are women
- 19:57Speaker 1: living in this world. This is not, we know better,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but now I'm victim blaming.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Well, no, but now it's fabulous because so many women
- 20:04Speaker 2: are involved. More need to be, but so many are
- 20:07Speaker 2: now in a way that's important. um that you can
- 20:11Speaker 2: feel the weight of them knowing that so it's almost
- 20:15Speaker 2: like screen meta where it's like you know the rules
- 20:18Speaker 2: and it's gonna get you in there and then that's
- 20:19Speaker 2: like you're rooting for like get there and have a
- 20:22Speaker 2: good for her moment which that was on my list
- 20:24Speaker 2: actually barbarian but.
- 20:25Speaker 1: This is what bothered me about barbarian not that anything
- 20:29Speaker 1: bothered me about the movie it was a perfect movie
- 20:31Speaker 1: but i sat in wait and i went too hard
- 20:34Speaker 1: for bodies of bodies, bodies, be like, I want to
- 20:37Speaker 1: talk about bodies, bodies, bodies on a microphone. So then
- 20:40Speaker 1: when Barbarian happened, no one called me to talk about
- 20:43Speaker 1: Barbarians on a microphone. Everyone gets Skarsgård' s character wrong because
- 20:48Speaker 1: they're like, see, he was just a good boy and
- 20:51Speaker 1: she was just uncomfortable.
- 20:52Speaker 2: No, the whole magic of that movie is that she
- 20:54Speaker 2: defied and beat every level of boss.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Here's what it is.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It's like you're playing a 90s pixelated video game meant
- 21:01Speaker 2: for boys and you are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
- 21:04Speaker 2: and you get to the boss on level one. And
- 21:06Speaker 2: that guy's just a crab. I don't know, guys. I'm sorry,
- 21:08Speaker 2: I'm offending a lot of people. I did used to
- 21:09Speaker 2: play that with my brother. But let's say that guy's
- 21:11Speaker 2: like a crab with, like, fireballs. And, like, you're like, okay,
- 21:14Speaker 2: this is fine. Because real quick, you learn if you
- 21:16Speaker 2: jump on his head while he's doing the fire, whatever.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Get it? Go.
- 21:19Speaker 2: You go to the next board. You got boss number two.
- 21:22Speaker 2: This guy's a little taller. He's got henchmen. And you're like, oh, oh, okay.
- 21:26Speaker 2: But if I do my, like, super speed run or something,
- 21:28Speaker 2: it'll get that, right? Then by the end, you're like,
- 21:31Speaker 2: I'm a nine year old girl and I'm terrified because
- 21:33Speaker 2: this thing is like the size of my whole screen.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And I have no fucking clue what to employ to
- 21:37Speaker 2: beat this. So in that movie, she got and we
- 21:41Speaker 2: got to see these like from everyday horror to monster
- 21:46Speaker 2: movie horror. And she actually showed resilience in a way
- 21:50Speaker 2: that I wanted to stand up and clap for at
- 21:52Speaker 2: every freaking step. She is in my top five final
- 21:57Speaker 2: bills of all time.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Here's what it was for me when it came to
- 22:00Speaker 1: the Skarsgård character. And be my baby while she's doing her, like,
- 22:02Speaker 1: walk of... Yes. Like, victory down the.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Like, chef's kiss perfect. This is what got me about
- 22:09Speaker 1: Skarsgård in that fucking movie. Which everyone was charmed by him.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And I was like, that's right. He gaslit you just
- 22:15Speaker 1: like he gaslit her. Like, it's just... What it is,
- 22:21Speaker 1: is it's so.
- 22:23Speaker 2: In our actual society, that behavior is so normalized.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 22:26Speaker 2: And excused and expected. Listen, the fact that he did
- 22:31Speaker 2: not murder her is a win. Yeah. Well, he didn't
- 22:36Speaker 2: rape her.
- 22:37Speaker 1: He didn't even try to slip anything in her drink.
- 22:39Speaker 1: He didn't try to sell her meat.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I mean, guys, what are we asking men to cure cancer?
- 22:46Speaker 1: This guy's golden. Go. You're good. Wrap it up. He's
- 22:49Speaker 1: a perfect gentleman. But And it's so great talking about
- 22:53Speaker 1: this movie with women because that movie outlines something that
- 22:57Speaker 1: I think is a very feminine experience where it's like
- 23:00Speaker 1: I laid down a boundary. I did not want to
- 23:02Speaker 1: have a glass of wine with you. So immediately, all
- 23:05Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're like, fine, I'm going to have
- 23:06Speaker 1: a glass of wine and I'm opening it in front
- 23:08Speaker 1: of you. Right.
- 23:10Speaker 2: None of that was an accident. It wasn't just to
- 23:12Speaker 2: show the audience that she's warming up and they're getting familiar.
- 23:14Speaker 2: That was 100 percent to me anyway. And I'm I
- 23:17Speaker 2: don't care.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I enjoy it as much.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Either way, if they didn't mean for me to take
- 23:21Speaker 2: this or if it was very, like, cleverly written into it,
- 23:24Speaker 2: it's a mirror to reality, so I appreciate it. But, yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 2: all I took away from that was she ended up drinking.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And that was the goal. And that was his goal.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And they just... And it was just itty-bitty things like that.
- 23:38Speaker 1: But then it was, like, her idea to be like, oh,
- 23:40Speaker 1: help me with my bed. Oh, maybe we want to kiss. Like, and...
- 23:45Speaker 1: it's just too real. Like that's so, it's too real.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And when I listened to reviews of it.
- 23:50Speaker 2: They're always like, it's told not to take candy from strangers,
- 23:53Speaker 2: but women are encouraged to share a glass of wine.
- 23:55Speaker 1: It's just share a glass of wine. He opened it
- 23:57Speaker 1: right in front of you. You're going to be a
- 23:58Speaker 1: bitch and not take that glass of wine. That would
- 24:01Speaker 1: have been her being rude.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Essentially.
- 24:03Speaker 1: When I listened to reviews of it, it was always like, Oh,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and that's so nice that they left a good guy
- 24:09Speaker 1: in there because he was like the, the like bait
- 24:11Speaker 1: and switch. I go, no, he was a bad man too.
- 24:14Speaker 1: The point of that movie is they're all bad men.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like Drake, no new friends. This is like
- 24:19Speaker 2: no good guys. There's not a good guy in this movie.
- 24:21Speaker 1: The cop that doesn't believe her. Justin Long, who's trying
- 24:24Speaker 1: to get off of a rape charge. Like, they're all
- 24:28Speaker 1: bad guys. Daddy in his diaper. And PJs.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Just like reminiscing on the old days when you just
- 24:35Speaker 2: freely raped the whole neighborhood.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And then I was about to say his name and
- 24:39Speaker 1: then I like blanked on it. Richard Bright. Oh, yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Such a creep in it.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Oh my god, such a creep.
- 24:46Speaker 1: They handed us a monster and this very barbarian-esque lady,
- 24:50Speaker 1: this super strength lady who was trying to breastfeed Justin Long.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Who was the ultimate victim. Who was the ultimate victim.
- 24:56Speaker 1: And then by the end of it, you're like, she's
- 24:58Speaker 1: not the monster. Fucking men are the monsters. And this
- 25:02Speaker 1: is what happened.
- 25:02Speaker 2: I want a wolf and cub movie with our final
- 25:08Speaker 2: girl and the mommy monster. I want a world where
- 25:12Speaker 2: she can take her to a safe place. And they
- 25:16Speaker 2: are cocaine bears. And they are cocaine bears.
- 25:21Speaker 1: That's what I want. But she is also one of
- 25:25Speaker 1: my favorite final girls. 100%. I made myself go see Men.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I didn't see that. Tell me things about this movie
- 25:34Speaker 1: because I didn't see it. Number one, Men was a movie.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And I've only heard Men talk about it. Yeah, of
- 25:39Speaker 1: course you have. It's amazing.
- 25:40Speaker 2: And I hated it.
- 25:42Speaker 1: You loved Men.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I loved it. I saw it twice in theaters.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Everything I heard about that, people hated it. I'm looking
- 25:48Speaker 1: at you. What a good horror. Darcy, I would love
- 25:51Speaker 1: you to explain to us why you loved Men. You know,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I'll tell you exactly that.
- 25:55Speaker 3: I'll bring out my Letterboxd review because.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I can't remember. I can't remember anything. It's a long one.
- 26:03Speaker 1: It's actually one of my most liked reviews, too. Make
- 26:06Speaker 1: him more interested. Wow, I absolutely love this movie.
- 26:09Speaker 3: I read a review where someone said that the director,
- 26:12Speaker 3: Alex Garland, hates women, and I think that couldn't be
- 26:14Speaker 3: further from the truth. This is a terrifying movie that
- 26:17Speaker 3: really shows the fears that women face, especially when dealing
- 26:19Speaker 3: with toxic masculinity. I personally believe that this is an
- 26:23Speaker 3: accurate depiction about the way women are treated in society.
- 26:26Speaker 3: If you choose to stand up for yourself, especially against
- 26:29Speaker 3: your abuser, you're at fault and dangerous in a man's eyes.
- 26:33Speaker 3: If this can't convince you to stay, then you can choose.
- 26:37Speaker 3: They can choose to torment you however they choose. And
- 26:41Speaker 3: sometimes no one cares to help you. Guilt is a
- 26:44Speaker 3: very serious tactic that men try to control women. And
- 26:47Speaker 3: I see it all the time. Again, I love this
- 26:49Speaker 3: movie and everything it stands for.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I know it takes a hard left about an hour in,
- 26:53Speaker 1: but I enjoyed where it went.
- 26:55Speaker 3: If you're offended or grossed out by this movie, please.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Open your eyes because this shit happens all the time. And, um,
- 27:01Speaker 1: and then I just went out about how I love
- 27:03Speaker 1: body horror and, Here's I love that review. And I
- 27:06Speaker 1: truly believe that that's what men thought it was doing. Like,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I truly believe that they that's their thesis statement. But
- 27:13Speaker 1: when I watched men, I was convinced that it was
- 27:16Speaker 1: doing that. But in the most like grossest, like, and
- 27:19Speaker 1: this is what women are always complaining about way. Like,
- 27:23Speaker 1: this is how they visualize us. And I don't know
- 27:26Speaker 1: if it's because because it was a male thing. creator
- 27:30Speaker 1: and a male driven team I was like this is
- 27:33Speaker 1: them just making fun of us.
- 27:34Speaker 2: He's an ally no 100% like have you seen Ex
- 27:38Speaker 2: Machina or Annihilation yes.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Probably those probably been years both like I think.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Gorgeous love letters to just like women in horror and
- 27:48Speaker 2: I think almost like Ex Machina you could what was
- 27:50Speaker 2: her name I want to say Eva but that's Wally
- 27:53Speaker 2: that I just watched with my daughter I don't remember
- 27:55Speaker 2: her name either she's so pretty oh gosh I'm like
- 27:58Speaker 2: popping the mic she's so pretty.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Oh, she was in everything. That's going to bump. Do
- 28:02Speaker 1: you have your internet? I got you.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Are you looking for the actress?
- 28:10Speaker 1: Yes. It's Alicia Vikander. Ava. Oh, we're close. I feel
- 28:19Speaker 1: like that movie, I almost consider her a final goal.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Which is such an interesting like, with the current sort
- 28:28Speaker 2: of surge in interest about AI, but everyone, watch a movie.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Watch a movie. Watch a movie.
- 28:33Speaker 1: I haven't seen it in forever.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Just watch a movie. But Annihilation 2, I think, is
- 28:36Speaker 2: a really interesting example of a man directing a female
- 28:41Speaker 2: cast in a way that I feel is really respectful
- 28:44Speaker 2: and super honors the source material.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Great book, if you haven't read it. You know, I
- 28:49Speaker 1: just found it to be a really ingenuine movie, but
- 28:51Speaker 1: maybe that's my internalized bias because... Which one?
- 28:55Speaker 4: Men.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Men. oh okay it's my internalized bias against male film
- 29:00Speaker 1: creatives because i'm like no yeah like so i'll re-watch
- 29:05Speaker 1: it or i won't.
- 29:06Speaker 5: It was so long everybody it's it's very um it's
- 29:10Speaker 5: interesting but i did in the mood for that i
- 29:13Speaker 5: saw it twice at the theaters about um grace le
- 29:17Speaker 5: domas and ready or.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Not I have heard it on my list. Oh, yes.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I'm obsessed with that movie.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I like so many. Dude, that movie.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:26Speaker 2: That movie checks so many boxes.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I watch it all the time.
- 29:31Speaker 2: It is my every holiday movie. If it's 4th of July,
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm watching it. If it's like Arbor Day, I'm watching it. Thanksgiving.
- 29:37Speaker 2: It's never not time for that movie. I freaking love it.
- 29:38Speaker 3: I had to bet.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I had to beg. You've seen it?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 29:43Speaker 1: And I saw it at a man's house. Dun, dun, dun.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I watched that movie at just the right time in
- 29:48Speaker 2: my life. By myself in the theater.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I literally had to beg for it. I was like, no,
- 29:53Speaker 1: I want to watch this movie. It's about a bride
- 29:54Speaker 1: who gets tricked into marrying a man and then his
- 29:56Speaker 1: family tries to eat her or something. She's got a
- 29:58Speaker 1: shotgun and I want to watch it.
- 30:01Speaker 2: I love her. I watch every single breath she takes
- 30:06Speaker 2: that is captured on film. I do not dislike anything
- 30:08Speaker 2: she's done. And I get that that's not a popular opinion,
- 30:12Speaker 2: I guess, for some of the things.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But I just love her.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I absolutely love her. And this is her sort of
- 30:18Speaker 2: like like look at me it's sort of her like
- 30:24Speaker 2: debutante down the staircase I feel like it's just this
- 30:28Speaker 2: like showcase for her to be all of the things
- 30:33Speaker 2: she is so vulnerable she is so manipulated she's great
- 30:38Speaker 2: at just like being scared and screaming she's so scrappy
- 30:40Speaker 2: like she when she rips her dress like that's but
- 30:45Speaker 2: it's so it's so symbolic I feel like for so
- 30:49Speaker 2: many women who have ever been a bride and like
- 30:53Speaker 2: a wedding that maybe the marriage didn't work or like
- 30:55Speaker 2: you feel deep on the other end of something. Like
- 30:58Speaker 2: it's very on the nose because we're in the horizontal
- 31:01Speaker 2: and that's what you do. But like, I mean, when
- 31:04Speaker 2: I saw it, it was so cathartic. Cause it was like,
- 31:06Speaker 2: I'm watching a physical sort of like representation of the
- 31:10Speaker 2: carnage that comes with not knowing who you're marrying or
- 31:13Speaker 2: maybe not knowing the family you're marrying into. And her
- 31:17Speaker 2: final scene is, Where she is sitting in her freaking
- 31:20Speaker 2: Converse all like bloody ripped up with a cigarette and
- 31:24Speaker 2: nobody in that family wanted her to smoke.
- 31:25Speaker 1: All the stuff.
- 31:27Speaker 2: That is a get up and clap good for her
- 31:28Speaker 2: and one of my favorite final bills.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:30Speaker 1: So freaking good.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And then what is the thing she says about the
- 31:34Speaker 2: cop comes over and is like looks like a heck
- 31:37Speaker 2: of a night or something and she's like fuck marriage.
- 31:40Speaker 2: There's some great like I don't remember what it was.
- 31:43Speaker 1: In-laws.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Fuck in-laws. She goes in-laws. That's all she says.
- 31:49Speaker 1: In-laws. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's so great. Okay, so
- 31:53Speaker 1: the thing about Ready or Not is we see that.
- 31:57Speaker 1: It's in a very smaller scale that we see that
- 32:01Speaker 1: as women, but we watch women in bad marriages.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Oh, that happened to me. They didn't try to kill me.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Might as well have. And we tell people like, oh,
- 32:11Speaker 1: you're young. Oh, you'll figure it out. Oh, be more
- 32:14Speaker 1: patient with them. Oh, she's your mother-in-law, whatever. And then
- 32:18Speaker 1: we also see the aftermath of trying to like leave
- 32:21Speaker 1: that abusive situation where the family gathers around the abuser
- 32:25Speaker 1: and is like, not my kid. Yes.
- 32:27Speaker 2: What I like about that movie is it acknowledges that
- 32:29Speaker 2: dynamic present and ever present in that family.
- 32:33Speaker 1: You will never be part of the family. Right.
- 32:36Speaker 2: It is not your money. That is not your mother.
- 32:39Speaker 2: This is all being shown to you because you've been
- 32:42Speaker 2: a lucky chosen one to enter into the hallway of
- 32:45Speaker 2: the mansion in which they live. It is not your house.
- 32:48Speaker 2: The way they represent it in the end of that movie, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler,
- 32:52Speaker 2: please go watch that movie. It's probably streaming everywhere. But
- 32:55Speaker 2: the end of that movie where it is literally shown
- 32:58Speaker 2: to the viewers, the only way you get to truly
- 33:02Speaker 2: leave a situation like this is if they all literally
- 33:07Speaker 2: blow up. Because otherwise, you've got 12 people in a
- 33:11Speaker 2: room that don't take kindly to losing games, people, and life.
- 33:17Speaker 1: They don't like it.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So the odds that you're going to get to just
- 33:20Speaker 2: run away in your cucumbers and leave it and start
- 33:22Speaker 2: your life anew without the chains that this family was
- 33:25Speaker 2: trying to show you as if it was treasure, it's
- 33:28Speaker 2: slim to none. And so I thought that was both
- 33:31Speaker 2: a very gratifying ending for the movie we were watching
- 33:34Speaker 2: and the genre we're familiar with, but also a really
- 33:36Speaker 2: subtly and kind of sneakily sort of uh wedged in
- 33:41Speaker 2: kind of allegory for when the abuse occurs not even
- 33:45Speaker 2: just on the level of your significant other but it's
- 33:47Speaker 2: sort of a generational almost legacy like you see that
- 33:52Speaker 2: that has happened and it's how this plan has formed
- 33:55Speaker 2: for so long that like what you're going to be
- 33:57Speaker 2: the one to stop this like you can't fight city
- 33:59Speaker 2: hall so the fact that they do by their own
- 34:01Speaker 2: hand and because of their own ineptness and even being
- 34:04Speaker 2: as evil as they want to you know That they
- 34:07Speaker 2: just explode at the end is like, everything about it
- 34:09Speaker 2: is so Bravo.
- 34:10Speaker 1: It's so good. I think I screamed in Joker when.
- 34:15Speaker 3: That happened at the theater.
- 34:19Speaker 1: For one thing, again, marketing teams are brilliant and it
- 34:23Speaker 1: happened with Jennifer's Body 2 where they know how to
- 34:27Speaker 1: sell a movie so it will stream everywhere. So they're like,
- 34:30Speaker 1: don't worry, it's a thirst trap. She's a lady with
- 34:33Speaker 1: a shotgun and a dress. Oh, yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: The images they choose to be like Netflix.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Are you familiar with the fact that they recommend it
- 34:41Speaker 2: in a different image still to your boyfriend or your
- 34:44Speaker 2: husband or your mom?
- 34:45Speaker 1: I didn't know.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Because I have seen the same movies on my mom's
- 34:49Speaker 2: Netflix that it's like, you should watch.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Even whatever. Virgin River. And it's just like two people
- 34:55Speaker 1: holding hands like it's a Nicholas Sparks. Then it's on mine.
- 34:57Speaker 1: It's like, hey, bitch.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Hey, I know you want to see some blood or something.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:02Speaker 2: You want to watch this Virgin River? And it's got
- 35:05Speaker 2: some like super shady looking dude like right in the
- 35:08Speaker 2: back behind. Like, I'm a coolest girl. And I'm like,
- 35:10Speaker 2: a maybe?
- 35:11Speaker 1: I want to watch that.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Virgin River is so boring. And I'm so sorry that
- 35:15Speaker 1: Netflix is lying to you.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I don't know. I can get down with some Lifetime
- 35:19Speaker 2: Movie Network. Like, babysitter eats my husband. But no, that's
- 35:23Speaker 2: not what it is at all.
- 35:24Speaker 1: But, like, so I watch it, and I was like,
- 35:26Speaker 1: this movie's gonna be a barrel of laughs. And because
- 35:29Speaker 1: I'm sick, I did laugh through all of it, because
- 35:31Speaker 1: I love when women are taking guns to the patriarchy. And, like,
- 35:38Speaker 1: of course men are scared of me when I'm watching
- 35:40Speaker 1: horror movies, and they watch the glee light up in
- 35:42Speaker 1: my face when I'm like, this is a woman who's
- 35:44Speaker 1: gonna take a gun to his entire family, and she's
- 35:48Speaker 1: gonna shoot up capitalism.
- 35:50Speaker 3: And.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Again, we see that in real life where we're watching
- 35:55Speaker 1: a woman get herself out of a bad situation through
- 35:58Speaker 1: a breakup or a divorce or honestly fleeing from their
- 36:02Speaker 1: family in the middle of the night.
- 36:03Speaker 2: This is such a good place to interject another final role.
- 36:06Speaker 2: You're literally setting me up.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Are you there? Are you doing the same? I think
- 36:10Speaker 1: this is I will. Let's see.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I was going to say this reminds me of one, two, three.
- 36:16Speaker 1: You're not Thomasin. Oh, the witch. They're both great. Thomasin
- 36:21Speaker 1: was on mine, too. But I was thinking Aaron and
- 36:23Speaker 1: your next. Oh, your next.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Aaron and your next.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Okay, let's go there because she was number three on
- 36:26Speaker 3: my list. She reminds me of like Grace and Grace.
- 36:30Speaker 3: There's DNA shared for sure in the final wellness. And
- 36:34Speaker 3: it's like a similar story in a way.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I call that the dinner party horror where it's like
- 36:39Speaker 2: there's a galvanizing event where all the weird rich whoever
- 36:43Speaker 2: come out.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I love it.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I love that construct. And that's an earlier example that
- 36:49Speaker 2: is also superb. And I love that you get, like,
- 36:52Speaker 2: Ty West, AJ Bowie. It's like that whole, like, what
- 36:54Speaker 2: is it? Slap pack or whatever it's called.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yeah. All my favorites from Adam Wingard.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Adam Wingard.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Yeah. So good. Have you seen that one? I'm looking
- 37:07Speaker 1: at it and I know it was one that I
- 37:08Speaker 1: wanted to see and I'm not sure if I ever
- 37:11Speaker 1: got to see it.
- 37:12Speaker 2: You know, I think you're watching your next or American Mary.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So we'll have to look.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, like, And it is spooky season, and
- 37:22Speaker 1: I try to watch one scary movie a week, if
- 37:24Speaker 1: not one every night of the weekend, if I'm not exhausted.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Put this on your list. Yeah. Spoilers for your next.
- 37:31Speaker 2: What I love about that, and how the feminine final
- 37:35Speaker 2: girl sort of angle is explored, is that she ends up...
- 37:41Speaker 2: Very similar story where... I don't want to spoil it, but...
- 37:44Speaker 2: I'll crack it.
- 37:44Speaker 1: ADHD. Yeah. So she....
- 37:50Speaker 2: She is represented as just a very standard final girl
- 37:54Speaker 2: throughout the whole film. She's being ganged up on by
- 37:56Speaker 2: this family that you're obviously like, well, something creepy is
- 37:59Speaker 2: kind of going on. And then it becomes very explicit
- 38:01Speaker 2: that something creepy is going on. And there are some
- 38:03Speaker 2: twists that are great. But my favorite thing about the
- 38:06Speaker 2: movie is the moment the needle drops on the fact
- 38:08Speaker 2: that she is like a straight up, like, Bear Grylls style,
- 38:16Speaker 2: like survival, but for real, is it even fake? Like, she's, like,
- 38:19Speaker 2: was trained by her dad to be, like, a natural survivalist.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So with no tools, like, she knows how to, like,
- 38:27Speaker 2: quickly assemble weapons from just, like, chopsticks. Like, it's like
- 38:32Speaker 2: a Final Girl MacGyver, and you get to watch her
- 38:35Speaker 2: just go bananas-age it on, like, all these people that you're, like,
- 38:40Speaker 2: and again, it's a money-driven sort of, like, the plot.
- 38:44Speaker 2: So it's a similar kind of, like, the rich sort
- 38:46Speaker 2: of underestimating the others that they're letting, fortunately enough, join
- 38:51Speaker 2: their clan. It's great. It's a really, it's like Inglourious
- 38:54Speaker 2: Basterds for like shitty families with moms.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yeah, probably.
- 39:01Speaker 2: But no, I love it because I love too that
- 39:04Speaker 2: her dad taught her. So it is an interesting like
- 39:07Speaker 2: mother or daughter-father relationship where it's like it does show
- 39:12Speaker 2: this sort of pretty directly. It shows an example of
- 39:14Speaker 2: the patriarchy in helping her survive yeah in.
- 39:18Speaker 1: A way that well and so many movies so many
- 39:21Speaker 1: movies are fathers and sons fathers and their sons Yeah,
- 39:25Speaker 1: so much. Fathers and their sons. But it's one of
- 39:30Speaker 1: those things where it's like, if only I could get
- 39:33Speaker 1: every woman in a room who I've ever held both
- 39:36Speaker 1: of their cheeks in my hands and gone, leave and
- 39:39Speaker 1: let me know when you're ready to leave because I
- 39:41Speaker 1: have cash, I have a room, I have a car,
- 39:44Speaker 1: let's go pack up your stuff, whatever. And I could
- 39:47Speaker 1: just like, and it's always like, Their family's good to me.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Their family's good to my kids. We have a dog together.
- 39:53Speaker 1: We have a kid together. Money, money, money, paperwork and
- 39:58Speaker 1: bank accounts or whatever. And then to watch movies like
- 40:01Speaker 1: Ready or Not or You're Next, where it's like those
- 40:04Speaker 1: people are like you said, Elizabeth, those people are never
- 40:07Speaker 1: going to be on your side when push comes to shove.
- 40:10Speaker 1: and he has you up against a wall, or he's
- 40:12Speaker 1: drained your bank account, or he's drinking every night until
- 40:16Speaker 1: 3 a.m., they're never on your side. Blood is thicker
- 40:20Speaker 1: than water, and this is how people act.
- 40:23Speaker 2: And you don't just get to leave, is the thing.
- 40:26Speaker 2: It's like a fraternal order of bullshit. Truly, it's like
- 40:29Speaker 2: you're in the mob. It's not like, oh, I don't
- 40:31Speaker 2: want to do this anymore. They can't have a loose end, truly.
- 40:35Speaker 2: It's like a social version of that, where it's like,
- 40:39Speaker 2: well you can't just be out in the world telling
- 40:41Speaker 2: all your secrets or because there always are with that
- 40:44Speaker 2: amount of money like and so often these families are
- 40:47Speaker 2: just covering up for these men and just being like
- 40:50Speaker 2: it's not even that bad it's not even that bad.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Stop it and they're doing part of the gaslighting for
- 40:55Speaker 1: him I was going to say it's like gaslighting by
- 40:57Speaker 1: proxy but Christmas is coming up yeah the way that
- 41:03Speaker 1: starts to I need everyone to hear this is a
- 41:05Speaker 1: public service ladies ladies.
- 41:09Speaker 2: If you are ever going to the movies, going out
- 41:11Speaker 2: to eat, if it's your anniversary, if it's Christmas Eve,
- 41:15Speaker 2: if you have kids, if you don't, if you're married,
- 41:16Speaker 2: if you're single, if it's one date with this guy
- 41:18Speaker 2: and that he says this, run. Because this is where
- 41:22Speaker 2: it begins. This is the one red flag that, like,
- 41:27Speaker 2: this is it. Like, you need to go. Because I've
- 41:30Speaker 2: experienced this multiple times. And it never, ever ends well.
- 41:34Speaker 2: When a man says to you, well... We were supposed
- 41:39Speaker 2: to go see this movie, hear this band, dinner with
- 41:44Speaker 2: my mom for Christmas, birthday for our child. But now
- 41:48Speaker 2: the night's about this. Because you had a thought or
- 41:52Speaker 2: a feeling about something. Oh. You need to get the
- 41:55Speaker 2: fuck out.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Oh, when he says Christmas could have been perfect and
- 41:59Speaker 1: then you were upset because I put the shoes in
- 42:01Speaker 1: the salad.
- 42:02Speaker 2: There's a difference. I will argue there's a difference when
- 42:05Speaker 2: it's a few days later and they're like, hey, that
- 42:07Speaker 2: would have been really nice.
- 42:08Speaker 1: But this happened.
- 42:09Speaker 2: In the moment, if a person turns to you and
- 42:12Speaker 2: says about anything, anything, I was supposed to eat this
- 42:17Speaker 2: pizza from Sam's Club in the Sam's Club warehouse, and
- 42:21Speaker 2: this was going to be a good afternoon, but now
- 42:23Speaker 2: it's about this. Because you say something like, hey, when
- 42:27Speaker 2: we are out with your friends, like, could you not
- 42:31Speaker 2: be like, or like say make jokes or like make
- 42:35Speaker 2: jokes about my sexual like anything anything anything it could
- 42:38Speaker 2: be benign it could be huge when that is the
- 42:41Speaker 2: response that is that is like the titanic tip of
- 42:45Speaker 2: the iceberg right legit and the roots of that go
- 42:49Speaker 2: deeper than you ever want to explore.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Because that's going to be your value to them from
- 42:56Speaker 1: day one to day 1001 It's their tell. They don't
- 43:01Speaker 1: know that it is. But it is.
- 43:03Speaker 2: You should just listen to that.
- 43:06Speaker 1: It just is.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Because that is representative of incredibly deep-seated I hate all
- 43:14Speaker 2: the buzzwords. I'm going to find a different word. Self-respect
- 43:19Speaker 2: that trumps literally everything. It is a sense of entitlement.
- 43:23Speaker 2: To even a good night, regardless of whether you have
- 43:25Speaker 2: a migraine or your mom is sick or whatever. Well,
- 43:29Speaker 2: if the night now is about this, then what you're
- 43:31Speaker 2: telling me is you don't want your nights about me.
- 43:34Speaker 2: It's more important that Terminator, the movie, whatever, is enjoyable
- 43:38Speaker 2: to you than you hear me say a thing.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Just a Rolodex of men are going through my head.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Just a Rolodex. It's ever-present.
- 43:48Speaker 2: When you find one that doesn't, if you have a
- 43:50Speaker 2: bad time and a person says to you, a man specifically,
- 43:56Speaker 2: you can feel how you need to feel Fuck the concert.
- 44:00Speaker 2: I'll call my friends. My mom will deal.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Like, that's legit.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Or that's a.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Different kind of long con that I have not yet
- 44:08Speaker 2: experienced or encountered. And you should all be more terrified
- 44:11Speaker 2: than I know. But, like, that is showing up in
- 44:14Speaker 2: a way that's, like, actually standing in your room and
- 44:16Speaker 2: seeing you and is not dismissive and is putting you
- 44:20Speaker 2: first in a real way. Like, for real, I don't
- 44:22Speaker 2: care if you've been married for 10 years. Think about it.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Anyone listening, if you often hear well, tonight was going
- 44:28Speaker 2: to be about me trying the new chicken cacciatore at whatever,
- 44:32Speaker 2: but now it's about this.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Well, and it's the, so you're just going to ruin
- 44:36Speaker 1: tonight over what? Whatever this is.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Your feelings.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Whatever this is. So you can't just deal so we
- 44:42Speaker 1: can get to the movie.
- 44:43Speaker 2: That also presupposes that you owe them a good time.
- 44:46Speaker 2: What does that remind you of?
- 44:47Speaker 1: The way that we've been trained to be indentured servants
- 44:50Speaker 1: in our own relationships and families is so ridiculously mind-boggling
- 44:56Speaker 1: to unpack. And then when you start to deprogram it
- 44:59Speaker 1: and you watch your friends and your loved ones and
- 45:03Speaker 1: your backlash. Yeah. The backlash of just like watching people
- 45:07Speaker 1: being like, hey, hey, hey, he's treating you like you're
- 45:12Speaker 1: a second date and he feels like he should get
- 45:14Speaker 1: to second base. You've been married for seven years. Like,
- 45:19Speaker 1: where is the respect?
- 45:19Speaker 2: I have friends like you, Natalie, and I have great friends.
- 45:22Speaker 2: But like, I think it's no for real, though. It's
- 45:25Speaker 2: a testament to. the structure of society and the hold
- 45:29Speaker 2: it has over us. Because like, I don't think about
- 45:30Speaker 2: those people that didn't come forward and be like, Hey,
- 45:33Speaker 2: when I know that's what they thought, because after the
- 45:35Speaker 2: fact said it, but it's not that I'm like, you
- 45:38Speaker 2: had some own response. But to me, it's like, we
- 45:41Speaker 2: were also bent in backwards and upside down because of
- 45:44Speaker 2: the way we were raised, that people didn't feel comfortable
- 45:47Speaker 2: that I know loved me coming forward and saying a
- 45:50Speaker 2: thing they actually thought or believed or thought would help me.
- 45:53Speaker 2: And to be very honest, I was not in my journey.
- 45:57Speaker 2: far enough along to hear it and have that person
- 45:59Speaker 2: it would have been an episode of freaking friends shoot
- 46:03Speaker 2: the messenger like it would literally unfold like a 90s
- 46:05Speaker 2: sitcom where i'm mad at you not that the person
- 46:07Speaker 2: i should be mad at because how dare you bring
- 46:09Speaker 2: this up two days before my destination wedding or what
- 46:12Speaker 2: like you know there's not ever a good time like
- 46:14Speaker 2: i don't fault anyone for not doing that it just
- 46:18Speaker 2: sucks that we live in a world where.
- 46:20Speaker 1: That is not I'd rather, yeah, I'd rather mind my
- 46:24Speaker 1: business and make sure that you're going to a safe house. I, um,
- 46:28Speaker 1: I'm going through this right now with a friend and like, I, um,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I have like a lot of reasons to feel this
- 46:36Speaker 1: way about my friend's boyfriend and it's not speculation.
- 46:39Speaker 3: It's all factual things that have happened that I've even heard.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I can tell by the tone of your voice. Yeah.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Like it's from her telling me or my husband telling
- 46:48Speaker 3: me and like, I, um, I did address it, and
- 46:52Speaker 3: I got so fucking close.
- 46:53Speaker 1: I thought, like, she called me in the middle of
- 46:55Speaker 1: the night to come over, and, like, that was, like, I.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Was like, okay, she's gonna see.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I got her to listen to Tolerate It, and posted
- 47:03Speaker 1: the lyrics. That song changed my life. I could imagine.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Like, if that was out during certain times in my life,
- 47:09Speaker 3: it would have, like, wrecked me.
- 47:11Speaker 1: It's gratifying watching women in horror, like, literally take a
- 47:14Speaker 1: rifle to these people because you're like, if only. Right. Well,
- 47:18Speaker 1: but that kind of art is important.
- 47:20Speaker 2: That, like, big extreme and I think even like specifically
- 47:23Speaker 2: visual example of a reaction to a natural societal sort
- 47:28Speaker 2: of um construct or something in which you are stuck
- 47:32Speaker 2: like a web like there's you can't one of us
- 47:35Speaker 2: cannot go out in the streets of our respective cities
- 47:39Speaker 2: and just pair loud enough or get on a tall
- 47:42Speaker 2: enough soapbox that people are like oh okay I need
- 47:44Speaker 2: to listen so like yeah if it takes absolute mayhem
- 47:48Speaker 2: carnage cannibalism um you know like rape revenge film i
- 47:53Speaker 2: don't if it takes all of it all the time
- 47:56Speaker 2: because someone's dad might accidentally watch it on hbo one
- 47:58Speaker 2: afternoon please go forth and and you mean how everyone's
- 48:03Speaker 2: war going like i i love it remember when everyone's
- 48:06Speaker 2: boyfriend and husband got better for a week after the
- 48:09Speaker 2: barbie movie because they were like wait oh i think
- 48:13Speaker 2: i didn't get any letters after barbie i got a
- 48:15Speaker 2: few emails after the me too explosion and.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I was like oh yeah dude yeah dude no you
- 48:21Speaker 1: did that like.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Dude i shared the um the thing about barb like
- 48:28Speaker 3: barbie is prompting girls or you know people.
- 48:30Speaker 2: To leave toxic women to break up with her i
- 48:32Speaker 2: love it it's like it's like the the mainstream midsummer dude.
- 48:35Speaker 3: My friend freaking liked it and then all this stuff
- 48:37Speaker 3: happened like within the week and dude like she does
- 48:41Speaker 3: she we're not talking now and like our group of
- 48:43Speaker 3: friends like are um like all the girls are weird
- 48:47Speaker 3: towards me and i think like because they're only getting
- 48:50Speaker 3: because i'm not gonna sit here and go around like
- 48:51Speaker 3: i want to go around and trash this trust me
- 48:54Speaker 3: i do but i know what i i've been in
- 48:57Speaker 3: the situation 10 years before and my friend who was
- 49:00Speaker 3: in this relationship we're like very close now and she's
- 49:03Speaker 3: like i can see myself in this situation with your
- 49:06Speaker 3: current friend and i'm like i know eventually hopefully this
- 49:10Speaker 3: ends and.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Let's see it will however it will I use all
- 49:15Speaker 1: of the buzzwords, right? Because I know all of the buzzwords.
- 49:19Speaker 1: and I also have a pretty good read on people.
- 49:22Speaker 1: So I use things like, oh, so you're just signing
- 49:24Speaker 1: up to be a subject of a Dateline television episode. Right.
- 49:30Speaker 1: And they'll parrot them back to you because again, we've
- 49:33Speaker 1: been conditioned to also believe that like one day soon,
- 49:36Speaker 1: at some point, we ourselves will be some sort of
- 49:39Speaker 1: victim of violence. Like, we have... No, no, here's what's... Okay,
- 49:43Speaker 1: talk about the Madonna horror complex.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Sorry to interrupt, but this is, to me, I want
- 49:46Speaker 2: to write a think piece on sort of branching off
- 49:50Speaker 2: of that theory and ideology that is so prevalent in
- 49:55Speaker 2: society and film and art. There is also this, like...
- 49:59Speaker 2: It's like... You are either victim or... survivor in a
- 50:06Speaker 2: way that is like you it's like a choose your
- 50:09Speaker 2: own adventure where you are not writing the story but
- 50:13Speaker 2: it's it's definitely reduced to it becomes your sort of
- 50:17Speaker 2: responsibility in a way that I don't think is always
- 50:20Speaker 2: fair due to circumstance to leave or stay or know
- 50:25Speaker 2: what's right like where it's like another Taylor Swift song
- 50:28Speaker 2: that applies here is the it's time to go it's
- 50:30Speaker 2: time to go it's time to leave it's so good
- 50:34Speaker 2: um But yeah, I think, yeah, there's a lot to
- 50:37Speaker 2: say sort of about where you're going with that.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Right. So in the back of our minds, we have
- 50:41Speaker 1: all of this language about how, like, it's like, wear
- 50:45Speaker 1: skirts to your knees, watch your drinks, don't be out
- 50:48Speaker 1: after dark, walk in groups, keep your keys in your hand.
- 50:51Speaker 1: We're constantly filled that we are going to be a
- 50:55Speaker 1: victim of some sort of violence at some point. It
- 50:57Speaker 1: will never be on our terms. It will always be
- 51:00Speaker 1: our fault. whatever. So women that you are interacting with
- 51:05Speaker 1: who are in these types of like volatile, toxic relationships,
- 51:09Speaker 1: they know exactly what to say to you where they're like,
- 51:12Speaker 1: I know, I know that what happens when, you know,
- 51:15Speaker 1: it gets to that point, like I'll get hurt or
- 51:18Speaker 1: I'll get, you know, these are the type of guys
- 51:21Speaker 1: that kill their wives or whatever. And then you're like, oh, okay, cool.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Stop bringing them to Thanksgiving. Like, Because what if he
- 51:28Speaker 1: gets angrier at me? Because I'm telling you, like, we
- 51:31Speaker 1: can pack up your stuff today.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Right? If you're in this situation and you're a friend
- 51:36Speaker 2: of Alicia D. Darcy, you should read Leave No Bruise.
- 51:40Speaker 2: I believe that's what it's called. Or No Visible Bruise.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Let me, I will get back to you. It's fabulous
- 51:47Speaker 2: and it's about the slow.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Evolution of.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Resentment, disrespect to resentment, to anger. to hatred and how
- 51:59Speaker 2: it's like literally the story of like a normal white
- 52:02Speaker 2: man from a normal family in a normal neighborhood married
- 52:06Speaker 2: a pretty blonde white girl and everybody was like okay
- 52:10Speaker 2: it's kind of weird and then like it's like a
- 52:12Speaker 2: horror story like it's told by the woman's family he
- 52:16Speaker 2: killed her like it's like it really sometimes does get
- 52:19Speaker 2: there and like you can't it's death by a thousand
- 52:22Speaker 2: cuts You can't tell when it's happening because it's not
- 52:26Speaker 2: one day that it happens.
- 52:27Speaker 1: It has been happening for the decade you've decided to stay.
- 52:31Speaker 2: With this person.
- 52:31Speaker 1: And the entire time that it's not happening, they're using
- 52:35Speaker 1: all of their energy and all of your time to
- 52:37Speaker 1: make sure that you make, you honestly believe that this
- 52:41Speaker 1: is good and that the times where he is violent
- 52:44Speaker 1: or volatile or pouty or shitty or emotional.
- 52:47Speaker 2: It's allowed because of what they give you. And that
- 52:49Speaker 2: not only is from the man, it's from all of
- 52:51Speaker 2: society down to your grandma. Like, They've got to take
- 52:54Speaker 2: care of you. They've got to support you. Well, does
- 52:56Speaker 2: he pay for things when you go out? Well, all
- 52:58Speaker 2: these markers of, like, success or if they care about
- 53:01Speaker 2: you that also can represent financial control, which is on
- 53:05Speaker 2: the wheel of abuse, where, like, we literally are taught
- 53:09Speaker 2: sometimes in the society, in all societies, I'm sure, that
- 53:12Speaker 2: encourage dating or trusting men that red flags sometimes are
- 53:17Speaker 2: a carnival. Sometimes it just means they're really fun.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Or they love you a lot.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Like.
- 53:24Speaker 1: You.
- 53:24Speaker 3: Haven't seen the good side. You haven't seen all the
- 53:27Speaker 3: good things.
- 53:29Speaker 1: It's because, again, we've all known someone or have lived
- 53:32Speaker 1: in the abuse cycle ourselves where it's like, hey, hey,
- 53:36Speaker 1: we have a chart for this. So, yeah, he was
- 53:39Speaker 1: volatile today and now we're honeymooning for two months.
- 53:42Speaker 2: It's the love bombing.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:44Speaker 3: I was like, you're being love bombed. Like, I'm watching
- 53:46Speaker 3: you be love bombed.
- 53:47Speaker 1: But we're honeymooning. Just so the next time that he's volatile,
- 53:53Speaker 1: he can throw back at you. I don't understand. So
- 53:56Speaker 1: I'm just not allowed to get upset anymore. So every
- 53:59Speaker 1: time I get upset, you're going to tally it.
- 54:02Speaker 2: In my own house, I can't verbalize an opinion about
- 54:06Speaker 2: a female politician? In my own house?
- 54:09Speaker 1: Well, sir, where's my own house? Where are my.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Boundaries about how people speak about women in politics or not?
- 54:18Speaker 1: We are going to have a daughter.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I'm very uncomfortable with.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Where this goes.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Like, in horror, what it does is put this in
- 54:26Speaker 2: your eyes in a way that any fucking idiot Tom, Dick,
- 54:30Speaker 2: or Harry can sit in a seat and be like, Yeah,
- 54:32Speaker 2: that shit's scary. I mean, yeah, if we were fucking
- 54:35Speaker 2: slashing their ankles and shit, I could understand it, but
- 54:39Speaker 2: we ain't doing none of that shit. Why are they
- 54:41Speaker 2: fucking us? And I'm like, I hope every incel in
- 54:43Speaker 2: America accidentally goes and sees all of these movies that
- 54:46Speaker 2: are brilliantly marketed as tits and ass and Megan Fox
- 54:50Speaker 2: kissing a girl. Please keep doing that. Please keep doing
- 54:53Speaker 2: that so that asses get in seats that actually need
- 54:55Speaker 2: to hear this because it does no good, you guys,
- 54:58Speaker 2: if it's just awesome spooky babes like us going to
- 55:01Speaker 2: be like, yes, we know. Like, take your boyfriends, take
- 55:05Speaker 2: your husbands. If it breaks you up, good. If he
- 55:08Speaker 2: leaves that movie theater and feels bad for Christian in
- 55:10Speaker 2: the bear suit, get done like that happened to me
- 55:13Speaker 2: that was the biggest red flag i should have been
- 55:15Speaker 2: like and so that i think is what ultimately final
- 55:18Speaker 2: girls would get there the good ones and like you
- 55:22Speaker 2: feel like you gained a friend in the the.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Greater war of whatever the big bad.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Is and and it's heartening to see someone who can
- 55:33Speaker 2: survive it in the.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Story also one of my favorite final girls is the
- 55:39Speaker 1: final girl who survived Sebastian Stan on Hulu's Flesh.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Fresh. Because she turns her assy.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, no, but like literally like a sirloin. Yeah, he's
- 55:55Speaker 1: selling her for meat. For meat on the black market.
- 56:00Speaker 1: But literally, the moment that you know, oh, she's going
- 56:03Speaker 1: to turn his gaslighting bullshit around on him because men
- 56:07Speaker 1: will believe that they are lovable and that they are
- 56:10Speaker 1: likable because they've never had to believe that they're not
- 56:12Speaker 1: likable or lovable.
- 56:14Speaker 2: I felt such connection to that, her character Noah, because
- 56:18Speaker 2: when I watch movies, especially like Home Invasion, anything where
- 56:22Speaker 2: there's like a, any kind of relationship between the captor, captain, like,
- 56:28Speaker 2: If they are interested in the cat and mouse at all.
- 56:33Speaker 2: To me, it is so unbelievable that a woman would
- 56:35Speaker 2: not employ every inch of her wiles. All the brain cells.
- 56:43Speaker 2: All the, like, you are going to die. At every
- 56:47Speaker 2: turn where she was like, I'll flirt with him. I'll
- 56:50Speaker 2: wear this dress. Let's dance.
- 56:52Speaker 1: I'll eat the boob. I'll kiss him. I'll go down
- 56:55Speaker 1: on him. I'm like, yes, yes, yep.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Yup.
- 56:59Speaker 2: And I hope my daughter does that too one day
- 57:00Speaker 2: if she is being sold part for part for fucking
- 57:03Speaker 2: meat for Richmond to eat.
- 57:04Speaker 1: The thing about Fresh and the whole like turning their
- 57:06Speaker 1: gaslighting against them is like I really do want to
- 57:09Speaker 1: hit home that like we can and should and will
- 57:13Speaker 1: do it because men truly live in this like utopia,
- 57:17Speaker 1: especially white men, where it's like they've never had to
- 57:20Speaker 1: fear us. like they they're like what do you mean
- 57:22Speaker 1: i'm not.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Lovable and like you're just giving me an intro oh
- 57:25Speaker 2: for mine this is.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Great like what do you mean i'm the most lovable
- 57:29Speaker 1: and likable guy in the world that is what society
- 57:32Speaker 1: tells me that's why i have all the money and
- 57:34Speaker 1: all of your body autonomy.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Yes and if they manipulate you into liking them or
- 57:39Speaker 2: staying with them they're doing you a favor because they're
- 57:41Speaker 2: so great because they're and you probably would have found
- 57:43Speaker 2: some bullshit dude anyway so.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Like Flipping it on them, I'm like, oh, this is
- 57:48Speaker 1: why the incels are getting ate. This is why the
- 57:51Speaker 1: loneliness epidemic in men is starting to become our problem
- 57:55Speaker 1: where they're screaming at us on YouTube and TikTok. Like,
- 57:57Speaker 1: why won't you just love us? Because they've started to realize,
- 58:00Speaker 1: wait a minute, do women know how to gaslight? And
- 58:04Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, motherfucker, you can't gaslight the gas. Here
- 58:07Speaker 1: you go. Here you go. You ready? Go for it.
- 58:08Speaker 2: Natalie, have you seen a little film from 1999 called Auditione?
- 58:14Speaker 1: No, I don't even think I've heard of that one. Darcy?
- 58:18Speaker 1: I love auditions.
- 58:19Speaker 2: Okay, so let me just be bold here and say
- 58:22Speaker 2: Asami Yamazaki might be my number one final girl. She
- 58:27Speaker 2: is the monster and she survives. And I am obsessed.
- 58:32Speaker 2: So in short, Natalie and listeners, a beautiful young woman
- 58:37Speaker 2: is answering an ad question for a casting call for
- 58:43Speaker 2: this one years I've seen it but that's on the
- 58:46Speaker 2: rewatch too for a commercial I.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Saw it for the first time during COVID times so
- 58:51Speaker 3: I've only seen it so it's like not super fresh
- 58:53Speaker 3: but I sorry keep going plug it up actually just
- 58:57Speaker 3: an episode on it check it out but yeah so
- 59:01Speaker 3: she goes to the audition she gets selected the audition
- 59:06Speaker 3: ends up being a total sham that a business and
- 59:10Speaker 3: his friend, his friend suggested he do this so that
- 59:14Speaker 3: he could find a new wife.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Because his wife died. And he's this very sympathetic character.
- 59:18Speaker 2: He's mourning. He doesn't want to be alone for the
- 59:20Speaker 2: rest of his life. He just wants a nice girl.
- 59:23Speaker 2: He just wants somebody that he meets organically. Shout out
- 59:27Speaker 2: to Gary the Golden Bachelor.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Oh, girl, yes.
- 59:30Speaker 2: You can talk about that offline. As organically as can
- 59:33Speaker 2: happen when fabricating a job to have a woman come
- 59:38Speaker 2: in and literally stand in front of him and be like,
- 59:41Speaker 2: I return now. You can see my backside.
- 59:43Speaker 1: And then, like, say something about soap.
- 59:47Speaker 2: And he picks her. He picks the wrong one. And
- 59:50Speaker 2: she then spends the rest of the movie like, psychologically, emotionally,
- 59:57Speaker 2: and then in the crescendo, incredibly physically eviscerated.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Like, just torturing her. My hero.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: And I want to be scared of her, but really
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: I kind of just want to go get lunch. I
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: really want to be like, look, the way you go
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: about it, let's fine tune that a bit. We have
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: the internet now. Like, you can eviscerate in multiple, many ways.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: But I like you, Moxie. and good for you.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Like, fucking good.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Because his grief is none of your business.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: And he does not deserve to audition wives. No.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: And she's thinking she's getting a movie role.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: You know what I mean? What she's doing is going
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: to work. Right.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: She's going to work. I used to surf catfish for like.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: A long time. And I was going to work. If
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: someone showed up at a table and pretended to... Mm-mm. No.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: It's such a good movie, you guys. It's so good.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I have to rewatch it. No, I love that. Because
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: in your explanation, I didn't understand that she didn't know
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: she was auditioning to be a wife. She was auditioning
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: to be a starlet. And, like, the rage that would
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: have started in my belly and gone to my ears
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: to be like, oh, fuck, are you really that?
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Because you watch her art, too, of, like, I'm special.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: it's Japanese, so there's this, like, you get to see
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: in this really cool and also terrifying way how the
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: misogyny transcends language and culture because there is so much
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: about that movie that is, like, I think very specific
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: to Japanese culture and especially, like, Japanese media or, like,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: representation on film because you're not gonna, it's not familiar.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: This is not a casting couch situation. Like, it's very formal.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: It's very, and that almost, like, gives you the sterile
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: sort of, like, lens through which to look at this
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: where then when you get to see it devolve at
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: the hands of a mad woman she's never reason like
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: i'm fine girl go ahead to wrap up because we'll
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: talk about this for three days we would y'all be
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: thursday before we stop what is one empowering.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Lesson that a final girl has departed on.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: You danny midsummer just because the alternative that you have
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: chosen to an abusive emotionally physical otherwise relationship is not
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: perfect it doesn't mean you don't deserve it and you
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: didn't do the right thing because I'm tired of that
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: argument that like you know what that's not your business
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: she got out of something she needed to get out
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: of we'll work on the rest later right growth is
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: a circle good for her good for.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Her I'm going to say, and it's funny because I
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: definitely blew off Laurie Strode earlier today, but I'm going
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: to say Laurie Strode specifically from the Rob Zombies movies.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: I love Scout Taylor Compton.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: I was actually going to get on this earlier, but
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: it just didn't jive. But in Halloween 2, how she
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: overcomes it and just like, I don't know.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I guess I just, I would say the.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: Strength and that you see in her in those movies,
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: obviously she doesn't like, I mean, I guess at the
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: end of her winter, it's like, it doesn't end up great,
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: I guess.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: But like, I think it's like the real, um, and like, yeah,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: it's a promising. It's a very, yes. It's refreshing. Yeah.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: And that doesn't mean they don't win.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: You get to see them get to that point regardless.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: And sometimes the asshole wins.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: And like, I just think I love her. The way...
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: I just think if that was me, I feel like
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: I would be like her. I would be, like, a
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: total fucking batshit crazy, like, Satan shit on my wall.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Seriously.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Like, when I watched that for real, I was like, damn.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Like, I would be.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I would be, like, not even Sidney Prescott level sassy.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: But what I want is to be spitting, cussing, and
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: kicking like she is. And it's so nice to see
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: that type of performance.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Yes. You know what I mean?
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Like, in a modern... female character in horror and i
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: yeah i love that there are men that watch that
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: movie and are like she's just a wild bitch i'm
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: like yeah she is get the go and sometimes that's
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: what you need.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: To be like when you're getting murdered yes yeah so
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: i feel like i don't even know if you asked
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: me that tomorrow or yesterday if it would have been
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: the same answer but that's what i'm feeling now i.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Feel like i'm gonna go with go with that i'm
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: gonna go with ready or not barbarian um our good
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: old we didn't even talk about her but i could
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: talk about this movie for weeks my good old final
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: girl from the menu oh that i love that movie
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: i love that movie it's a beautiful movie i think
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the very idea that like not only will you walk
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: out of it but you deserve to walk out of
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: it even if others aren't following you or either if
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: like other people are choosing to not get out of
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: the situation because that's the choice she has to make
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: in the menu Well, it's funny.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I'm listening to you and trying to find a common
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: thread between your final goals, and there is one, and
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: it is complete. Like, they're totally unassisted in what others
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: think of them or their decision.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: And that saves their lives.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: And it saves their lives. So I guess my empowering
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: thought is fuck politeness. And if not everyone's going to
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: join you in the walkout, then just keep walking and
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: watch them burn, I guess. Don't wait for Justin Long
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: to take one more breath because what if he survives it?
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Who cares? Who cares? He's trying to get out of
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: his rape trial. We're walking. You got to get out
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: of Detroit.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: One of my favorite moments in Barbarian is when they're
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: in the pit and she's like, drink it.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Drink, just take the bottle.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: And he won't. Like, I literally... In that moment, could
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: not stop the words coming out of my face. But
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I'm like, what a fucking man.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Yes. What a mean baby.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: And boom, I've done a pint about the plot of
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: the movie. Like, you acting like such a baby, just
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: put that shit in your mouth. Put your shit in
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: your mouth. You're not going to do this because it's
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: not cool.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Who's watching you, sir? You're still in a pit.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: Shit.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Put it in your mouth but her face says it
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: all like it literally yeah she's like like you just
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: have to do it what are you do it yeah
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: i'm like yeah that girl been down there doing it
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: for how long two days like because that's what you
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: do if she wants to breastfeed you you're like put
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: it put the titty in your mouth you may as
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: well shoot yourself in the head like what are you
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: doing here it's like obfuscating the goal because no one's
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: just going to come in and be like oh are
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: you white oh do you live in a suburb okay
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: you want your.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Land are you just a long to go This man
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: needs freedom. He doesn't have to be breastfed by the monster.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Mama monster. His privilege has come to call.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: But I love how accurately they portrayed that. Because it
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: really was like, dude, what are you waiting for?
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: And she's like sweaty blood. What are we hoping for
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: this spooky season? Because I've got to tell you, like,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: I have never been in a point in my adult
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: life where I have been more excited for new thrillers
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: and horrors to always pop up because they've now gotten
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: me thinking. And they've gotten me thinking about the female
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: experience and just like, what does that mean to be
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: non-male in this world and to live in a world
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: of horror that is everyday and yet we've decided to
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: up the ante. And I just hope upon hope that
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: more female horror creators just come out of the woodwork
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and they just spoon feed me justification movies for the
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: rest of my life so i can be like i
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: told you.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: There's never been a time in history that we've been
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: able to easily access such varied voices um you know
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: folklore from other cultures it's not even just about like
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: diversity in our own country like it's it's If you're
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: looking for something to stretch your mind, widen your horizons,
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: and you happen to like horror, I'm sure in other
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: genres as well, I don't watch things that are not horror.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: So I don't know. It's out there. Like it's out
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: there and women are making it. And not only are
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: women making it. Please get on Instagram, find me, finalgirlscout.

- 1:08:45Speaker 2: written films. So if you do want to hear different voices,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I think sometimes you might be surprised by And A,
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: how relevant to your own experience it is, whether it's
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: you as a protagonist or you as somebody that you
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: didn't realize could be considered a villain like it's necessary
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: and like I feel like the black voices the female
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: the female black voices like we've had such a cool
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: few years in horror for female black storytellers and like
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: I need to hear those stories like there's this sense
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: of welcoming and me I can only speak to the
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: horror film community but Like, it feels like a party
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: that the right people are finally showing up to in
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: a way that I'm really, really excited to be a
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: part of.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I could totally agree with that.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: Was the new Candyman, that was made by a woman, right?
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Yes. Yes. I loved the new Candyman. Are we done?
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: Do you guys have manifestations for the audience? Or are
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: we just, like, women of horror? Yay. I think our
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: manifestation has been.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: ribboned throughout our conversation I think our communal manifestation is
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: put scary things in your eyes on purpose as you
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: are experiencing them anyway and sometimes art is cathartic in
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: a way that you may not know you need.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: And I want everyone to be able to text me
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: at least one time something and I go good for
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: you good for.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Her and it's okay if it's filled by rage it's
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: okay if it's like not politically correct.
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: Right, if it's not like your typical traditional.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: It's scary. Okay, well, do you guys want to plug
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: anything before you get your outfit and then we transition
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: into ghost stories for Patreon? Also, if you have that
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: list already made and you want to send it to me,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: I will put it on a newsletter, on a blog,

- 1:12:14Speaker 3: days to edit this. And remember out there, tolerators, you
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: don't have to smile through anything you're tolerating, including... A
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: man who had the audacity to think that he could
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: take you down with violence.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Miles are for joy.
