Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / Cringe to Connection: Authentic LinkedIn Messaging That Actually Works
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs, I'm
- 0:06the founder and CEO and your host today.
- 0:09Today's episode is all about what do I say with my outreach
- 0:15on LinkedIn because I think you all know the importance of
- 0:20adding new connections, connecting with new people,
- 0:22building new relationships. I mean, every client came from a
- 0:26relationship of some sort, whether it's a referral, whether
- 0:29it's a new relationship online, whether it's meeting someone out
- 0:33at an event, it's a relationship, right?
- 0:35So it's like, how do I generate new relationships and how do I
- 0:40build trust? Because that's why referrals
- 0:42work so well because the trust is transferred when we don't
- 0:47have the referral we're generating, we're building that
- 0:50trust ourselves. So that is the core component.
- 0:53And the question, of course, is how do I do this before I keep
- 0:58going? We have this new tool out that's
- 1:00really been incredible. It is building you a LinkedIn
- 1:04content calendar, a LinkedIn content strategy, and it is
- 1:07learning your voice over time using AI to get smarter about
- 1:11what's working, what's not working.
- 1:13So come check us out. We're in beta right now.
- 1:15We're offering a big discount for feedback.
- 1:17So come check us out. mylance.co.
- 1:19You can sign up right there. Book a call with me and we can
- 1:22discuss if it's a fit. OK, with that, we're going to
- 1:25jump into the episode. So the problem that I hear and
- 1:29feel myself is the majority of outreach is salesy and
- 1:34uncomfortable, right? It's cringy, it's self
- 1:37promoting. And we all get those inbounds in
- 1:40our inbox of like, hey Bradley, do you have trouble with video
- 1:43content? And it's annoying, right?
- 1:46And I don't trust these people. I don't know who they are.
- 1:48And frankly, I immediately delete them.
- 1:50And if they don't stop, right, if I say, hey, please stop or
- 1:54I'm not interested and they keep going, I will legitimately block
- 1:57them. Like I think that's the
- 1:58mentality that a lot of people have.
- 2:01And you don't want to be that person.
- 2:03So the question is, how do I generate authentic relationships
- 2:08without being that person, without being annoying and
- 2:10cringy and self promoting and all that kind of stuff.
- 2:13So we're going to talk about the main concept here of instead of
- 2:18what do I want from you, right? I want business.
- 2:23But instead, we're going to flip it and we're going to flip it to
- 2:27how can I add value to you? How can I help you?
- 2:32What can I do for you? That's a value add to you that
- 2:36also legitimizes me and has an opportunity for us to work
- 2:39together in the future. But the number one first thing
- 2:42you want to do is you just want to add value.
- 2:45Like flip the script. This is not about you.
- 2:48This is about adding value to them.
- 2:50You're actually giving them an opportunity for their problem to
- 2:54be solved. Now you are the mechanism to
- 2:57solve that problem, which is beautiful, but they are the ones
- 3:01getting value. And you're basically coming in
- 3:02to say, hey, I can do that, and I'm going to do that maybe even
- 3:06before you hire me. So there's going to be a
- 3:09sequence here. There's going to be the sequence
- 3:11of 1 introduction who am I2 adding value.
- 3:17Ideally you're even adding value even before the introduction.
- 3:20And then three is some sort of contribution.
- 3:24And then lastly, it's going to be building this relationship to
- 3:27really play the long game. Like there's no get rich quick
- 3:31here. There's no silver bullets.
- 3:34And sometimes things can feel like you're silver bullet.
- 3:36But I'm going to tell you why that's actually false.
- 3:39And it's due to the work that you put in ahead of time that
- 3:42built up to, oh, I want to work with you now.
- 3:45I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about the value of content along
- 3:48with this strategy because at the end of the day, let's just
- 3:52say you've been following me for a few months on LinkedIn and
- 3:56then I reach out to you. It's a very different experience
- 4:00than if I connect with you, reach out to you and say, hey,
- 4:02I'm Bradley, I can help you with your fractional business.
- 4:04I hope you find clients. Come talk to me then.
- 4:07I sound like every other lead Gen. company out there.
- 4:10I have no credibility. You have no idea what I'm
- 4:13capable of or what I've done in the past or what makes me real
- 4:16and legit. And you're going to ignore it.
- 4:18The first way of you've been following me for a few months.
- 4:22You see the content I put out. You see what I've done in my
- 4:24career. You see that I'm genuine, I'm
- 4:27authentic, that I'm talented. I know what I'm doing.
- 4:29I've been doing my lands for a long time.
- 4:31I've been in this industry for years.
- 4:33I've helped thousands of fractionals.
- 4:35All of a sudden I have all this legitimacy built up in your
- 4:39mind. So when I reach out and say,
- 4:41hey, Carrie, I'd love to chat with you, you're like, oh,
- 4:45Bradley wants to chat with me. That's interesting.
- 4:47Like what a different response. Then who are you?
- 4:50I don't know you please leave me alone versus oh, like he knows
- 4:54what he's talking about. He could really help me.
- 4:56So as we are navigating this outreach, we can't do it alone.
- 5:00Like there has to be another way that we're building legitimacy
- 5:04and building trust and content is the best way because people
- 5:07are just seeing it organically. That being said, let's talk
- 5:10about a few different messaging options for doing outreach.
- 5:16The first one, and really this is my favorite, is having them
- 5:21contribute to something that you're doing.
- 5:23So maybe you are writing a monthly article on a topic in
- 5:28your area of expertise and you want them to contribute to it.
- 5:31So it's saying, hey, I'd love to get your take on this
- 5:35perspective. I'm going to be compiling, I'm
- 5:37compiling an article and I'll share the final insights with
- 5:41you across the industry when it's done.
- 5:43Are you open to a quick conversation?
- 5:45So you are basically adding value to them because you're
- 5:48actually going to give them the full report at the end, which
- 5:51will be insightful to them, hopefully, if you're kind of
- 5:54hitting on the right topic. The second one is I have a
- 5:57podcast and I'd love for you to be on it.
- 5:58I'd love to get your take on, you know, it's a similar kind of
- 6:01vibe, but again, you are increasing the exposure of that
- 6:05person. And frankly, people love being
- 6:07the expert. People love being like, what do
- 6:10you think about this? People love giving their take.
- 6:12So you're kind of feeding into that as well, which is great.
- 6:15The third option is really a soft intro with actually no ask.
- 6:21So you say, hey, I'm Bradley, this is what I do.
- 6:24I'm going to be publishing content.
- 6:26Would love to get your take. Would love, would be interesting
- 6:29to see if it adds any value to you.
- 6:30Hope you have a great day. So you're just introducing
- 6:33yourself and then you're going to let your content actually do
- 6:37the work. You're going to let your content
- 6:39legitimize you build a relationship.
- 6:41And then in 30 days, 60 days, I'd say probably more like a
- 6:45month, as as long as you're publishing content regularly,
- 6:47would be a good time to reach out again and say, hey, I'd love
- 6:52to get your take on this or curious if this is something
- 6:56that's resonating with you or just ask a question and start a
- 6:59conversation. See if you can get on a call at
- 7:01that point. Now, this might feel like a lot
- 7:04of work because the end of the day, you need to do the
- 7:06outreach, you need to create the content.
- 7:08And then you need to follow up with who you did the outreach to
- 7:11in 30 days or 45 days or whatever you choose and follow
- 7:14up with them. And yes, the answer is business
- 7:18development is the core of your business.
- 7:21You might think you're in, you know, professional services and
- 7:24it's all about delivery. And yes, it is right, you have
- 7:27to deliver an amazing product. But sales is the engine of your
- 7:32business. It's the only thing that keeps
- 7:34things going is bringing in new clients and being able to bring
- 7:38in new clients when you need them.
- 7:39So you need to be setting aside, I'm going to say a minimum of
- 7:44eight to 10 hours a week for business development whether
- 7:47your plate is full or not. And every single fractional
- 7:50executive that stops doing their consulting business, I'd say 95%
- 7:55of the time it's because they did not make time for business
- 7:59development ongoing. And thus, you know, they had a
- 8:02full plate maybe, but they stopped doing business
- 8:04development. And then eventually like a
- 8:07client or two left, which is just going to happen.
- 8:09And then they are starting over from scratch, which is not a
- 8:13place you want to be. So yes, you need to be putting
- 8:15in time towards this. And we're really talking about
- 8:17how you can make the most out of that time.
- 8:21The fourth option for outreach is the hard pitch.
- 8:24It's clear, it's direct, it's efficient.
- 8:26It says like, hey, this is what I do.
- 8:29This is the problem that I solve.
- 8:31Are you open to a quick chat to see if this is something that I
- 8:34could help you with? And you're kind of hoping that
- 8:37the problem that you solve really lands and really
- 8:40resonates with them and is a really big problem right now.
- 8:43And honestly, sometimes it works.
- 8:46I'd say it works 3 and 100. So if you reach out to 100
- 8:50people, three people might say like, yes, that's of interest,
- 8:54let's chat. So at the end of the day, it's
- 8:56not a bad strategy because you could easily reach out to 100
- 8:59people a week, get three people to respond.
- 9:02You have 12 calls a month, Could you get 2 clients from those 12
- 9:05calls? Probably, right?
- 9:07So it's not a bad route, but you are playing a numbers game.
- 9:11You are guessing. And as time goes on and people
- 9:15more and more people use tools and use AI and all this kind of
- 9:18stuff, it's just becoming less effective.
- 9:20And I think it's less trusting because even if I have that
- 9:23problem and I'm willing to jump on a call with you, I don't know
- 9:27that you are the person to solve that problem for me.
- 9:30You're kind of like fighting this uphill battle every step of
- 9:33the way versus building trust and using that trust to get in
- 9:37the door and show that you're the best person to solve this
- 9:40problem. So I'll throw it out there as an
- 9:42option, but I can't say I recommend it.
- 9:44It's something that I've done in the past.
- 9:46It's something that we used to tell clients to do years ago.
- 9:49And frankly, as the market has matured and more and more people
- 9:53are out there, it's just less and less and less effective
- 9:56cracking down on it. e-mail clients are cracking down on it
- 9:59and for a reason. Like nobody wants to get spammed
- 10:01with these kind of messages. And I shouldn't use the word
- 10:04spam because it's really not. You're like offering the
- 10:07opportunity to solve their problem.
- 10:09But when you're sending out 100 and you're expecting 97 to say
- 10:12no, those 97 are saying like, hey, you know, please stop,
- 10:17right? And and that's just not the best
- 10:18feeling in the world. I think we've all felt it.
- 10:21Then the question ends up being, what outreach method do you want
- 10:25to incorporate into your business?
- 10:27And you get to decide, you know, what's your personality, what
- 10:30feels genuine, what feels authentic to you?
- 10:33Because if it doesn't feel good, you're not going to keep doing
- 10:36it. And we need to be consistent
- 10:37over time. So are you more of a like, hey,
- 10:40I just want to introduce myself And then let let your content do
- 10:42the work. Do you want to have whether
- 10:45mastermind groups or roundtables or the article we talked about
- 10:48or the podcast we talked about? Like is that something that's of
- 10:51interest to you? Like I love doing my podcast.
- 10:54I get to share my expertise. I get to talk with guests that
- 10:57are really interesting. And so it's really kind of a no
- 11:00brainer to invite people on the podcast because one, I love
- 11:03doing it and two, it is great for business development and
- 11:06marketing and awareness and trust and all of that.
- 11:08So I love doing it. It takes very little work from
- 11:11me actually, and it's a huge value to the business.
- 11:14So you get to decide what do you like doing?
- 11:17What's your personality? How do you want to show up in
- 11:20the marketplace? I mean, you really get to
- 11:21decide. And then the key is just being
- 11:23consistent over time. So how like, what's the, you
- 11:27know, next step, like I, you know, I like to make these
- 11:29podcasts as actionable as possible.
- 11:32And I'd say look, you have your, you have your options, right, of
- 11:36what your outreach is going to look like.
- 11:38And you essentially get to sit down and pick 1.
- 11:40You get to say, OK, I am going to do the soft intro and then 30
- 11:44days later I'll ask them for a call, whatever it is, right?
- 11:47We talked about the options already.
- 11:48So you get to pick which one you want to do and you get to set
- 11:52basically a plan for yourself. Like OK, Monday I'm going to do
- 11:56this, Wednesday I'm going to do this, and Friday I'm going to do
- 11:58this. As far as adding new
- 12:00connections, sending the outreach, maybe tracking in your
- 12:03CRM, and then of course creating content.
- 12:05I think content just absolutely has to be part of the strategy.
- 12:10You can't really do 1 without the other.
- 12:12Like being having both is I'd say 1 + 1 = 3, right?
- 12:16Content is great, outreach is great, but combining them
- 12:19together is really the multiplier in growing your
- 12:22network and building trust at the same time, which just has
- 12:25this ripple effect of frankly, clients coming in the door.
- 12:28Like it just, it just worked. And then the last part I really
- 12:31want to touch on here is there is this fear of just putting
- 12:36yourself out there, whether it's with content, whether it's with
- 12:39outreach of what's going to happen on the back end.
- 12:42Like what if people don't like my posts?
- 12:45What if people don't like what I have to say?
- 12:47What if they tell me that I'm a fraud or tell me that I'm stupid
- 12:51or tell me to go away? There's all of these fears.
- 12:54And I think the fear is actually bigger than the logical
- 12:59response, meaning the fear in your body of like, I don't want
- 13:03to do this. When I actually ask people, why
- 13:06don't you want to do this? Like, what is the fear?
- 13:09It's actually much smaller than than the emotion lends itself to
- 13:12be. So like, the emotion is this big
- 13:15fear. I don't want to do this.
- 13:17When I ask why, they're like, oh, well, what if, you know,
- 13:20someone on my network tells me I look stupid.
- 13:23I'm like, OK, well, what if that happens?
- 13:25What if someone's like, yeah, you know, Bradley, like, this is
- 13:27a stupid post. Can I handle that?
- 13:29Am I OK with with hearing that from a friend or someone I trust
- 13:34or you're a stranger and the answer's like, yes, I'm OK.
- 13:37Like I can wake up the next morning and have one person tell
- 13:41me that I'm stupid or two or three or four or five and know
- 13:44that I held dozens or hundreds or thousands of others that did
- 13:48get value from my post. So you really get to kind of
- 13:52acknowledge what's true for you and write it down, really write
- 13:56it down and then question the story.
- 13:58Like the story is, if someone tells me I'm stupid, the story I
- 14:01tell myself is that like I'm not good enough and my business is
- 14:04going to fail and I'm not a good entrepreneur.
- 14:05Like are those things true? No, those things aren't true,
- 14:08but that's my fear. And I think when we can actually
- 14:11verbalize them and write them down and put them into words and
- 14:14then see the story that we're telling ourselves, we're able to
- 14:17challenge it pretty easily actually, and really just kind
- 14:21of get get out ahead of it. So anyway, I will leave you with
- 14:24that. There are lots of hopefully
- 14:26great takeaways from this episode as far as how to do
- 14:29outreach, how to use content to be effective and how to really
- 14:35take the few hours a week, ideally 8 to 10 that you're
- 14:39doing for your business development and really make the
- 14:41most of them. So with that, I will end and
- 14:43recap today's episode with talking about our content again
- 14:48like this. We are we built this tool to
- 14:50make publishing great content for your customer is easy as
- 14:55possible. Like that is the problem to be
- 14:57solved here of you don't know what to say on LinkedIn, but you
- 15:00know you need to be showing up on LinkedIn.
- 15:02And so we've made it so much easier to take your ideal
- 15:06customer and what their pain points are and turn that into a
- 15:09content strategy, a content calendar and one that gets
- 15:12better and smarter over time, that saves you time and also
- 15:15delivers an amazing content strategy that's going to
- 15:18resonate with your customer and help you get clients with that.
- 15:22If you enjoyed this episode, please give us a, a rating.
- 15:25Please reach out to me on LinkedIn.
- 15:26I love hearing from you guys that have come to me telling me
- 15:30that you enjoy the podcast and listen to it.
- 15:32You know, when you're at the gym or in the car or wherever you
- 15:34are. So I would love to hear from
- 15:36you. Have an amazing rest of your
- 15:38day. Share this with a friend.
- 15:40Come say hi. We're here for you.
