- 0:08Most people think they know what's going to hurt and avoid
- 0:11an X after a breakup. But the very things that people
- 0:15try to do to make an avoidant X feel the loss usually actually
- 0:20make them feel safer, more justified, and even more
- 0:23emotionally shut down. So if you want to understand
- 0:26what actually gets through to an avoidant X after a breakup, you
- 0:30have to understand what they protect, what they suppress, and
- 0:34what really forces them to feel the loss.
- 0:37You can't just look at what would hurt you, you have to look
- 0:40at what disrupts their system, what removes their emotional
- 0:45buffer, what cuts off their usual escape routes, and what
- 0:50stops feeding the pattern that kept them comfortable in the 1st
- 0:54place. So stay tuned if you're new
- 0:58here. Hi, this is Lucia.
- 1:00I'm a dating and relationship expert specializing in helping
- 1:02you get your ex back or to get over your ex.
- 1:05And if you're not you, you're part of my no contact army.
- 1:08And welcome back. It's always great to have you.
- 1:11OK, so the first thing that hurts an avoiding X after a
- 1:14breakup is when you go completely silent.
- 1:17Of course you knew I was going to say that if you've been
- 1:19listening to me for a while. And I do not mean fake silence.
- 1:24I don't mean silence for a few days or a week while you watch
- 1:27their stories. I don't mean disappearing in a
- 1:30dramatic way. So they panic and come running.
- 1:33I mean real silence. The kind where you stop chasing,
- 1:37stop checking in, stop trying to keep the emotional threat alive,
- 1:41and stop making yourself available in the background.
- 1:45That hits harder than people realize.
- 1:47Avoiding XS are used to some version of this dynamic.
- 1:51They pull away, but the other person keeps reaching.
- 1:55They create distance, but the other person keeps the bond
- 1:58alive. They break the closeness, but
- 2:01they still quietly expect access.
- 2:04That's why so many of them don't fully feel the breakup right
- 2:07away. The breakup may have happened
- 2:09technically, but emotionally the connection is still being
- 2:13maintained by the other person. In other words, you you're still
- 2:18texting till, still explaining, still waiting, still reacting,
- 2:24still emotionally available. So the avoidant gets distance
- 2:29without having to fully feel the loss.
- 2:32They get relief without consequences.
- 2:35What could be better than that? That's why real silence can hit
- 2:39them so hard. Because now there's no emotional
- 2:42buffer. Now they do not get to feel in
- 2:46control while you keep the connection warm for them.
- 2:50Now they don't get to assume that you'll still be there when
- 2:53they feel lonely, curious, guilty, or restless.
- 2:57And now they have to confront the possibility that this
- 3:00breakup didn't just create distance, it created loss.
- 3:03And loss lands very differently when no one's chasing you.
- 3:08And by the way, if you would like my help to get your ex
- 3:12back, I do offer one-on-one coaching and you can get the
- 3:15rates at theartoflove.net/coaching and we
- 3:19will send them to you. They are not on the website.
- 3:23The second thing that hurts and avoid an X after a breakup is
- 3:27when you become emotionally unavailable to them.
- 3:30Now this is different from silence, although of course the
- 3:33two can overlap. A lot of people they stop
- 3:36reaching out, but emotionally they're still right there.
- 3:40So if the X sends a breadcrumb, they jump.
- 3:43If the X drops a low effort message, they light up.
- 3:47If the X appears confused, distant, or inconsistent, they
- 3:52rush in with empathy or softness or reassurance.
- 3:55So even though they're technically in no contact or
- 3:59technically pulling back, emotionally, they're still very
- 4:03accessible. And avoidant XS can feel that
- 4:07because even the avoidant who acts detached still knows that
- 4:13they can reach you. They want to know if the bond is
- 4:17still there, if they need it. They want to know they still
- 4:20matter. They want to know that they can
- 4:23open the door and you'll still be standing there emotionally
- 4:26ready. That's why become becoming
- 4:29emotionally unavailable can affect them more than some big
- 4:33dramatic display, because now they're not just dealing with
- 4:38physical distance, they're dealing with the collapse of
- 4:43emotional axis. They're dealing with the fact
- 4:46that the person who used to provide warmth and validation
- 4:50and understanding is no longer waiting there on standby.
- 4:55And that is important because many of wooden dynamics are
- 5:00built on imbalance, as I'm sure you found out.
- 5:03One person over functions emotionally while the other
- 5:07under functions. One person keeps trying to talk,
- 5:10fix, process, and connect while the other one keeps 1 foot out
- 5:14the door. So when you stop emotionally
- 5:17over functioning, the whole thing changes.
- 5:20Now they can't lean on your availability while giving very
- 5:24little back. Now they have to feel what your
- 5:26absence actually feels like instead of relying on your
- 5:30continued openness. To soften it and to help you
- 5:34stay silent. I have my app Silencio which is
- 5:38available on the App Store and on Google Play and the link to
- 5:42that is underneath every single video and podcast.
- 5:44And if you still practice the ancient art of reading books, I
- 5:48have a book that you can get at nocontactsecrets.com where you
- 5:52can read 2 free chapters before you purchase the book and the
- 5:56link to that is underneath of course also every video and
- 5:59podcast. OK, the third thing that hurts
- 6:02an avoidant X after a breakup is seeing that you are genuinely
- 6:07doing better without them. And this is where a lot of
- 6:10people get sloppy because they think, OK, so I just need to
- 6:13look happy, right? No, because performative
- 6:17happiness still feels emotionally hooked.
- 6:19It still feels like it's for them.
- 6:22It still carries this energy of please notice me, please react,
- 6:27please see what you lost. This is not what hits hardest.
- 6:32What hits hardest is when it becomes clear that your growth
- 6:36isn't a message to them, it's a choice for you.
- 6:40You're calmer, less chaotic, rebuilding your life.
- 6:45You're becoming harder to pull back into the old cycle.
- 6:48You're not waiting at the door emotionally.
- 6:51And that effects an avoidance because it forces them to
- 6:54confront something they may not have wanted to face.
- 6:58That may be you were not the unstable 1.
- 7:02You weren't the one creating all the heaviness.
- 7:04Maybe your pain wasn't the problem.
- 7:07Maybe the relationship didn't feel difficult just because of
- 7:10your needs. Maybe their own patterns were a
- 7:13major part of the breakdown. And when you're genuinely doing
- 7:16better, it becomes harder for them to keep telling themselves
- 7:19the old story, right? That you were too much?
- 7:22That the breakup was entirely necessary because of your
- 7:26emotions. That the relation failed because
- 7:28you couldn't handle things. So your growth becomes evidence
- 7:32that the problem was never just about your reaction, it was the
- 7:36dynamic and their role in it. The fourth thing that hurts in
- 7:41avoidant X after a breakup is when they start to realize that
- 7:45they were the problem. Now, this doesn't mean that
- 7:48every avoidant is going to wake up one day and become deeply
- 7:51self aware and send a beautiful accountability text.
- 7:55A lot of them won't, as much as we wish they would.
- 7:58Some avoidance are going to double down in denial.
- 8:01Some are going to keep distracting themselves, some
- 8:04will keep bread crumbing, some are going to jump into something
- 8:08else, some will disappear completely.
- 8:11And some will come back only when they're lonely, bored, or
- 8:15dysregulated, not because they've changed.
- 8:18So this isn't about fantasy. But when an avoidant ex starts
- 8:22to feel the loss in a real way, one of the most painful parts
- 8:27isn't just missing you, it's confronting their own role.
- 8:31It's realizing that they deactivated instead of dealing.
- 8:36They protected themselves at the cost of the relationship.
- 8:40They kept choosing distance and avoidance and ambiguity and self
- 8:45protection until the bond had no choice but to collapse.
- 8:49And that kind of pain is different because it's not just
- 8:52grief, it's accountability. It's realizing that they may
- 8:57have lost someone valuable not because love was impossible, but
- 9:01because they couldn't tolerate what real closeness required.
- 9:05That hurts, especially if you're no longer there trying to make
- 9:11it easy for them to escape and to blame or confusion or access.
- 9:17And this leads to something important a lot of people want
- 9:21to know, well, do avoidance feel pain after a breakup?
- 9:25Yes, of course. But pain isn't the same as
- 9:28growth. It's not the same as
- 9:30accountability or emotional maturity or being ready for a
- 9:38healthy relationship. An avoidant X can miss you and
- 9:43still not be capable of showing up differently.
- 9:46They can feel your absence and still reach for the same
- 9:50defenses. They can hurt and unfortunately
- 9:54still choose stagnation. And that's why your goal cannot
- 9:59be to make them suffer enough to come back.
- 10:02Your goal has to be to stop participating in the dynamic
- 10:05that kept you stuck, because there are really only two paths
- 10:09in Avoidant X can take after a breakup.
- 10:13The first one is growth, and that is where they do the
- 10:17uncomfortable work. They reflect.
- 10:19They stop hiding behind vagueness and distance.
- 10:23They learn to tolerate vulnerability instead of running
- 10:26from it. And if they come back, they come
- 10:28back with more than longing. They come back with ownership
- 10:32and change behavior. The other path is stagnation.
- 10:38That's where they stay the same. So they breadcrumb.
- 10:41They resurface, but without substance.
- 10:44They want access without responsibility.
- 10:47They miss you, but they don't change.
- 10:50They want relief, but are not willing to repair.
- 10:54And a lot of people confuse the two paths.
- 10:56They think that missing means growth.
- 10:59They think that reaching out means that they've changed, and
- 11:02that pain equals readiness. But it doesn't.
- 11:07Someone can feel the loss and still not be safe for you.
- 11:12That's why the deepest take away here isn't how do I hurt my
- 11:16avoidant X? The deepest take away is what
- 11:20gets through to an avoidant X is often the moment you stop
- 11:24protecting them from the consequences of losing you.
- 11:28Not by punishing them or playing games or acting detached, but by
- 11:33actually withdrawing your emotional labor, reclaiming your
- 11:38attention, building a life that's not centered on whether
- 11:42they come back or not. They have to feel the
- 11:45consequences. That's the only way they're
- 11:47going to decide to change. So actually become someone who's
- 11:52no longer available for half love, confusion and intermittent
- 11:58connection. And ironically, that's also what
- 12:02starts healing you. Because at some point, this has
- 12:05to be less about what hurts them and more about what frees you.
- 12:12And if your ex is avoidant, the temptation is to keep trying to
- 12:15crack the code, to keep trying to understand what they feel
- 12:19when they feel it, whether they miss you, whether they regret
- 12:22it, whether your science is working, whether your absence
- 12:26matters. But the more secure question is
- 12:30not how do I get through to them?
- 12:33It is why would I keep organizing my life around
- 12:38someone who could only love me from a distance?
- 12:42Because the version of you that heals is not the version still
- 12:46trying to make an avoidant X understand.
- 12:50It's the version that finally understands enough to let the
- 12:54pattern end. OK, so now I want to hear from
- 12:58you. Do you have any questions or
- 12:59comments to anything I've said? Please comment below and be sure

- 13:15enlightens.
