- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey Faithful, welcome to the Faithful Fitness Podcast. In a moment,
- 0:05Speaker 1: my dad, Coach Alex Van Houten, will help you honor
- 0:07Speaker 1: God by making the most out of the body God's
- 0:10Speaker 1: given you. Today you can expect truth from the Bible,
- 0:13Speaker 1: tools from science, and guidance for everyday life. So listen
- 0:17Speaker 1: close and get ready. Let's get 1% better today.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What's up Faithful? Before we get into today's conversation, I
- 0:29Speaker 2: want to give you a quick coach's note. Because I
- 0:31Speaker 2: think this interview is worth listening to with a particular
- 0:34Speaker 2: question in mind. My guest today is Brock Holyoke. Brock
- 0:39Speaker 2: is a builder, entrepreneur, fitness advocate, and somebody with a
- 0:44Speaker 2: very strong bias toward action. And there's a lot in
- 0:48Speaker 2: that philosophy that I appreciate very much. Stop waiting for
- 0:52Speaker 2: the perfect plan. Stop confusing gathering information with actually doing something.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Get moving. Learn through experience. Do hard things. Keep the
- 1:03Speaker 2: promises you make to yourself. And become more capable. If
- 1:08Speaker 2: you've listened to me for long, you know these ideas
- 1:11Speaker 2: resonate with me deeply. In fact, they resonate with me
- 1:15Speaker 2: for a very personal reason. Before Faithful Fitness, I had
- 1:20Speaker 2: the Betterment Company. And for years, one of the central
- 1:23Speaker 2: ideas behind my work was 1% better daily. That means
- 1:29Speaker 2: take responsibility for yourself. Improve what you can improve. Don't
- 1:34Speaker 2: wait until you understand everything. Just take the next step
- 1:38Speaker 2: and learn something from it. And then take another. I
- 1:42Speaker 2: still believe that. But I don't believe it's enough anymore.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And as Brock and I talked, I found myself coming
- 1:50Speaker 2: back again and again to a question that has become
- 1:53Speaker 2: incredibly important to me here at Faithful Fitness. Better for what?
- 2:01Speaker 2: What happens if you become stronger? What happens if you
- 2:04Speaker 2: do become more disciplined? What happens if you build confidence,
- 2:08Speaker 2: overcome fear, and make more money, and accomplish the thing
- 2:11Speaker 2: you said you were going to accomplish, and discover that
- 2:13Speaker 2: you're capable of much more than you thought? Those are
- 2:17Speaker 2: good things. But what are they for? Because self-improvement can
- 2:22Speaker 2: tell you how to become more effective at pursuing something,
- 2:27Speaker 2: but it cannot by itself. tell you what is worthy
- 2:31Speaker 2: of pursuit. So as you listen today, I don't want
- 2:35Speaker 2: you to dismiss Brock's message. Quite the opposite. There are
- 2:39Speaker 2: some simple, practical truths here that I think many of
- 2:43Speaker 2: us desperately need, especially in the fitness world. We live
- 2:48Speaker 2: in an age where we can consume almost unlimited information
- 2:51Speaker 2: about fitness, nutrition, business, relationships, theology, anything we want. And
- 2:57Speaker 2: sometimes another podcast, another book, another program, or another hour
- 3:02Speaker 2: of research isn't what's needed. Sometimes we need to actually
- 3:06Speaker 2: do the thing that we already know how to do.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But I also want you to listen for the question
- 3:12Speaker 2: beneath this conversation. What is all of this betterment ultimately
- 3:17Speaker 2: aimed at? Is the highest goal really becoming the best
- 3:21Speaker 2: version of myself? Or has God entrusted me with this body?
- 3:26Speaker 2: this ability, this time, and this life for something greater
- 3:31Speaker 2: than myself. That's the tension I want you to carry
- 3:35Speaker 2: in today's conversation. And if the idea of taking action
- 3:38Speaker 2: resonates with you, I don't want you to wait. This
- 3:43Speaker 2: is why I created the Faithful Fitness Assessment. In just
- 3:48Speaker 2: a few minutes of your own self-report, you can identify
- 3:52Speaker 2: the areas in your faithful fitness journey that require your
- 3:57Speaker 2: action right now. You can follow the link in the
- 4:01Speaker 2: show notes or go to faithfulfitness.co slash assessment. Don't wait
- 4:08Speaker 2: to learn more when you can take action on what
- 4:10Speaker 2: matters today. Go to faithfulfitness.co slash assessment. And let's get started. Now,
- 4:21Speaker 2: without further ado, here's my interview with Brock Holyoake. What's up, guys?
- 4:26Speaker 2: This is Coach Alex Van Houten on the Faithful Fitness Podcast.
- 4:29Speaker 2: We help you make the most out of the body
- 4:31Speaker 2: God's given you, and I'm really looking forward to our
- 4:33Speaker 2: conversation today with Brock Holyoak. Brock, how are you doing today, brother?
- 4:37Speaker 3: Good, man. How are you?
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm doing good. I'm doing good. Starting off Monday strong,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and I'm grateful to have a good conversation to start
- 4:45Speaker 2: it with. So if you don't mind, I'm going to
- 4:47Speaker 2: dive right into things.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I love the setup, the blue and the blue,
- 4:52Speaker 4: and you got the gym there. I got my gym
- 4:55Speaker 4: kind of over off the side, like we were.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Talking earlier, but yeah, as we were saying, there's just no,
- 5:01Speaker 2: there's no cut and dry way to make a podcast
- 5:04Speaker 2: studio out of a gym space, but you know, it's
- 5:06Speaker 2: really kind of near and dear to the heart, you know?
- 5:08Speaker 3: And in fact, that's, I know with this, you can
- 5:12Speaker 3: go do a workout, right?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Boom. Right. I actually like to work out before my,
- 5:16Speaker 2: my podcast interviews. I met, I'm, I'm watching your, uh,
- 5:19Speaker 2: your shoulders there. You got some great shoulders. You like, you've,
- 5:22Speaker 2: There's something about the energy following a workout that really
- 5:25Speaker 2: changes the game.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. For sure.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I used to set up like, I had a stationary
- 5:33Speaker 4: bike and I kept it in the living room and
- 5:35Speaker 4: my wife hated it. She's like, I'm sick of looking
- 5:38Speaker 4: at that thing. And it's like, if I sit down
- 5:40Speaker 4: and watch TV, if I sit on the couch, I'm
- 5:43Speaker 4: just watching TV. If I get on the bike and
- 5:45Speaker 4: I ride the bike while I'm watching TV, then I'm
- 5:48Speaker 4: getting a workout. So it's like, If I'm going to
- 5:50Speaker 4: sit there anyway, I might as well sit here and
- 5:52Speaker 4: burn some.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Calories, right?
- 5:55Speaker 2: And hence you built a garage gym to the side, right?
- 5:58Speaker 2: That's right. So the ladies usually win that battle.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I finally had to move the stationary bike, but we've
- 6:04Speaker 4: got it all set up.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I do more HIIT cardio stuff anyway now, so.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Well, we have so much to talk about. And so
- 6:11Speaker 2: I kind of want to get to how you got
- 6:14Speaker 2: to doing what you're doing now before we get into
- 6:16Speaker 2: kind of what our listeners can take from both the
- 6:19Speaker 2: philosophy of where we cross paths, even though we come
- 6:22Speaker 2: from very different schools of thought. And at the same time,
- 6:28Speaker 2: I would say the meat outside of the bones. You
- 6:30Speaker 2: got some big things coming up. So I want to know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: I mean, how did you get to doing what you're doing?
- 6:36Speaker 2: When I... did some research and understood where you were
- 6:40Speaker 2: coming from. I had my first job when I was
- 6:43Speaker 2: 14 years old working for a contractor. And let me
- 6:46Speaker 2: tell you the, the, the contractor world, as I understood
- 6:50Speaker 2: it as a 14 year old, couldn't be more, more
- 6:54Speaker 2: opposite of health and fitness. We're eating like liver cheese
- 6:58Speaker 2: on the job and, and drinking energy drinks and Mountain
- 7:02Speaker 2: Dews and, and, you know, a workout for a guy
- 7:06Speaker 2: who's been on the job site for 10 hours sounds
- 7:10Speaker 2: crazy town. Like, how do you have, you know, the
- 7:12Speaker 2: energy to do that? Why would you do that? That
- 7:14Speaker 2: sort of thing. And so, and so to connect with
- 7:16Speaker 2: somebody who's from the line of work that, that obviously you've,
- 7:21Speaker 2: you've helped to build and grow, as I understand it,
- 7:24Speaker 2: a big portion of what you do is, is help
- 7:27Speaker 2: to build and design custom houses. That's not, like the
- 7:31Speaker 2: labor or contractor and fitness don't always cross paths. So
- 7:35Speaker 2: how the heck did you get into fitness in the
- 7:37Speaker 2: contractor world, brother?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Well, from like growing up as a kid, I came
- 7:41Speaker 4: from kind of a contractor construction background.
- 7:45Speaker 3: My dad was in construction.
- 7:46Speaker 4: My grandpa was a remodeling contractor. And so I grew
- 7:51Speaker 4: up from a young age, like in learning a lot
- 7:55Speaker 4: of profanity that most five-year-olds don't get to learn.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:59Speaker 4: And, So I had a whole different vocabulary at five
- 8:04Speaker 4: than most of the other kids that I hung out
- 8:07Speaker 4: with just because of that. And we were kind of
- 8:10Speaker 4: taught that tough love, you know, just rub some dirt
- 8:12Speaker 4: in it and keep on going. And, you know, don't
- 8:16Speaker 4: worry about feelings. Don't, you know, don't make feelings a
- 8:20Speaker 4: priority because in this line, in this industry, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 4: if you have feelings, you're going to constantly get hurt.
- 8:25Speaker 4: So kind of one of those, like, as a kid, I...
- 8:30Speaker 4: kind of got accustomed to, you know, that harder mindset,
- 8:35Speaker 4: you know, from a young age. And so, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 4: I was kind of the same way. My dad come
- 8:38Speaker 4: in 14 years old, first day of summer. He's like
- 8:42Speaker 4: five o'clock in the morning, get up, we're going to work,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know? And it's like, go out and pour concrete.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think we were pouring a lot in.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know, St. George and Mesquite, Nevada. And it's like,
- 8:51Speaker 3: it's 110.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Degrees day in and day out, you know? And we're like,
- 8:57Speaker 4: I think his mindset was like, I'm going to make
- 8:59Speaker 4: you hate this so much you don't want to do it.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You kind of built that person to be physically active
- 9:06Speaker 4: and stuff. At 14, it's fun going out and being
- 9:11Speaker 4: physically active. For me, it was like, okay, I can
- 9:14Speaker 4: go flip burgers.
- 9:15Speaker 3: But that's going to be a boring job.
- 9:18Speaker 4: I was outside all day. I got a nice tan.
- 9:22Speaker 4: I should have you know, move around and be active.
- 9:25Speaker 4: And so it was something that I liked. And then
- 9:28Speaker 4: it was something that I really, for whatever reason, it
- 9:32Speaker 4: was like a couple of years of doing that through
- 9:34Speaker 4: the summer. It was like, I got pretty good at,
- 9:37Speaker 4: you know, like I was kind of one of the
- 9:39Speaker 4: better guys that they had skill set wise.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And so it kind of just evolved.
- 9:46Speaker 4: I went to a junior college for about a year
- 9:50Speaker 4: going into, I wanted to go into, uh, psychology, so
- 9:54Speaker 4: I kind of double majored in philosophy and psychology. I
- 9:58Speaker 4: had a lot of my credits done the first year
- 10:01Speaker 4: for my major and getting.
- 10:05Speaker 3: My bachelor's degree. I think I had two other credits.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I needed to get to be able to have my bachelor's,
- 10:11Speaker 4: but then I had the other four.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Years of like all the prereq stuff.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Well, I think the last week of my psychology class,
- 10:20Speaker 4: that year they were kind of going over pay scales.
- 10:22Speaker 3: And what to expect.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And it was like, well, you do this, you finish,
- 10:26Speaker 4: you go through your six months residency. And then it's like,
- 10:29Speaker 4: you can go higher on at a clinic for 35
- 10:32Speaker 4: grand a year. And I'm like, dude, for 1500 bucks,
- 10:36Speaker 4: I can go drive trash truck right now for 65
- 10:39Speaker 4: to 70. Like I can double that. And it's going
- 10:41Speaker 4: to like, I can have that CDL in a few weeks.
- 10:45Speaker 4: So I just kind of went all in on construction. Um,
- 10:50Speaker 4: worked for a few years. And then when me and
- 10:53Speaker 4: my wife got together, it was, we, she'd had some
- 10:56Speaker 4: kids from a previous marriage and we were kind of
- 10:58Speaker 4: in talks of having, you know, kid of our own.
- 11:02Speaker 4: And it's like, well, we better get going. Cause I'm
- 11:04Speaker 4: not getting any younger, you know? And so it was
- 11:07Speaker 4: just kind of, it was kind of the kick in
- 11:09Speaker 4: the pants that I needed to be like, look, the paycheck,
- 11:12Speaker 4: the paycheck thing. I don't like, I want, I want to,
- 11:17Speaker 4: I want to have more for my family than just
- 11:20Speaker 4: constantly struggling on you know whether.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Or not we can have what we need.
- 11:27Speaker 4: And i didn't really know much about i just knew
- 11:31Speaker 4: like looking at my boss it's like he's driving around
- 11:33Speaker 4: a nice truck he lives in a nice house like
- 11:36Speaker 4: wearing nice clothes to the job site it's like he's
- 11:39Speaker 4: he's obviously in a better place than i am so
- 11:42Speaker 4: the only thing that i could put together was it's
- 11:44Speaker 4: like I work for you.
- 11:46Speaker 3: You own the company.
- 11:47Speaker 4: And so if I want to be where you're at,
- 11:50Speaker 4: I need to do what you do. So for me, like,
- 11:53Speaker 4: it wasn't like I was smart enough to figure it out.
- 11:55Speaker 4: It was this monkey see, monkey do kind of thing
- 11:57Speaker 4: where it was like, you have what I want. I'm
- 12:00Speaker 4: just going to kind of copy what you did. And
- 12:03Speaker 4: there it's like, when I got licensed, started up my
- 12:07Speaker 4: own concrete construction company, started just doing like some little
- 12:11Speaker 4: backyard floors on the weekends, build a little bit of
- 12:14Speaker 4: cash flow up. And then when I went out kind
- 12:18Speaker 4: of on my own, I, I contracted out a couple
- 12:21Speaker 4: of residential homes. I'm like, man, I think, I think
- 12:25Speaker 4: at the time it was like early 2000. So the
- 12:28Speaker 4: homes were about nine or $ 10, 000 a piece. And I'm like,
- 12:32Speaker 4: Oh man, I'm on the hook for like $ 20, 000. Like
- 12:36Speaker 4: I don't have $ 20, 000 in the bank.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I'm on the hook for this.
- 12:40Speaker 4: So like one of those where you're just nervous, you know, and,
- 12:45Speaker 4: did it it worked out well everything turned out fine
- 12:48Speaker 4: and just snowballed right so it was like probably six
- 12:55Speaker 4: eight eight months down the road it's like now i'm
- 12:57Speaker 4: bidding you know million dollar commercial projects i'm building development
- 13:02Speaker 4: like a couple million dollar retaining wall projects and it's
- 13:06Speaker 4: just like doesn't.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Even faze me right and it's.
- 13:09Speaker 4: It's kind of For me, it was kind of a
- 13:11Speaker 4: crazy thought thinking back after the first year of really
- 13:15Speaker 4: getting into it. It's like, man, you can adapt so easily.
- 13:19Speaker 4: People don't understand how easy it is to go from
- 13:24Speaker 4: here to here. You can make that level jump really
- 13:29Speaker 4: quick if you just dive in and go all in.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Obviously, from... My walk of faith, I would say that's
- 13:39Speaker 2: how God made it. But that's actually one of the
- 13:41Speaker 2: things that Jesus taught is if you'll stop worrying about
- 13:44Speaker 2: yesterday and worrying about tomorrow and just worry about what's
- 13:47Speaker 2: right in front of you, you can't even imagine where
- 13:49Speaker 2: you're going to end up because of how intensely you
- 13:53Speaker 2: can deal with what's right in front of you. It's
- 13:55Speaker 2: plenty of trouble, but that trouble changes you into something
- 13:58Speaker 2: you can't imagine. That's a very powerful transformation process. Now,
- 14:03Speaker 2: I'm curious in your story, Where did fitness play into that?
- 14:08Speaker 2: Is that something that was constant for you? Or was
- 14:10Speaker 2: that something you rediscovered after getting into growing and owning
- 14:15Speaker 2: your own business?
- 14:17Speaker 3: It was.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I mean, as a kid, I was into sports. And
- 14:20Speaker 4: so I was into basketball, baseball. And then as we
- 14:23Speaker 4: got into high school, I kind of wasn't as good
- 14:29Speaker 4: as I thought I was. I could kind of see
- 14:31Speaker 4: the writing on the wall.
- 14:32Speaker 3: It's like, you're 5'10, 5'11. white and you can't jump,
- 14:37Speaker 3: like you're probably not playing in the NBA, right? Like that's, that's.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Probably just one of those things that's not going to happen.
- 14:44Speaker 4: So as I'm putting it together, it was kind of
- 14:46Speaker 4: like that. I lost a little bit more interest in that,
- 14:49Speaker 4: but I picked up, you know, the weights in high
- 14:53Speaker 4: school and started really getting into them and liking them.
- 14:56Speaker 4: And it was just something, you know, I think from
- 14:59Speaker 4: high school on, I was just always, you know, in
- 15:01Speaker 4: the gym. Still didn't know how to eat, right? Because
- 15:03Speaker 4: like you said, you know, you come from that construction background.
- 15:06Speaker 4: It's like gas station food and fast food or whatever
- 15:10Speaker 4: because everything's on the go. So it was like I
- 15:12Speaker 4: never had, you know, a clue on nutrition and none
- 15:17Speaker 4: of like our weight training coaches or anything like they
- 15:20Speaker 4: were just older guys. fat guys that just sat in
- 15:24Speaker 4: the corner and ate popcorn and drank soda pop while
- 15:26Speaker 4: we worked out. And it's like, well, I definitely am
- 15:29Speaker 4: not getting any nutrition advice from.
- 15:31Speaker 3: That guy, you know? Right.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:33Speaker 3: It took me a long, like mine was the nutrition.
- 15:35Speaker 4: It took me a very long time to figure out
- 15:38Speaker 4: because when I grew up, it was like pre internet
- 15:42Speaker 4: era or like right when it was coming out.
- 15:44Speaker 3: So it was like, we didn't have the information. Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 4: It's kind of an opposite end of the spectrum because
- 15:52Speaker 4: it was like our information was limited. And it kind
- 15:58Speaker 4: of made you, it's like if you're going to do it,
- 15:59Speaker 4: just go do it and figure it out as you're
- 16:02Speaker 4: doing it. Where now it's like there's an abundance of
- 16:05Speaker 4: information and everyone gets so confused with the information because
- 16:12Speaker 4: there's information and misinformation and counterculture. counterproductive stuff and contradicting stuff.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Everyone's just like, what do I do? I've got so
- 16:21Speaker 4: much stuff coming from every direction. You've already got a
- 16:27Speaker 4: pretty good basic knowledge of what to do, so just
- 16:30Speaker 4: start and then figure it.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Out as you go.
- 16:36Speaker 4: There's very few things in life that really move the
- 16:39Speaker 4: needle forward. With fitness, it's like eat better, move more,
- 16:44Speaker 4: be consistent. if you focus on those three things, like
- 16:47Speaker 4: you're probably going to get in pretty good shape. If
- 16:52Speaker 4: once you get to a certain point, you really got
- 16:54Speaker 4: to start optimizing and dialing it in. But by then,
- 16:56Speaker 4: like you'll, you'll kind of already been in that process
- 16:59Speaker 4: to where now you understand your body. Now you understand,
- 17:02Speaker 4: you know, I need the extra day off.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I need to push harder. Like you understand that, right?
- 17:07Speaker 4: Like when you start out, it's like, just focus on
- 17:10Speaker 4: the dumbed down, simple basics and, And that will exponentially
- 17:15Speaker 4: move the needle to a certain point. And then from there,
- 17:18Speaker 4: you got to start optimizing. But starting out, it's like,
- 17:21Speaker 4: just start. Don't overthink it. Start with the simple basics
- 17:26Speaker 4: and move with it. And it's the same with business.
- 17:30Speaker 4: It's like, what do you have to have to have
- 17:32Speaker 4: a business? It's like, well, you have to have a thing.
- 17:36Speaker 4: A thing being a product or a service that you sell.
- 17:40Speaker 4: You have to have somebody to buy the thing. you
- 17:44Speaker 4: have to get them to buy the thing and then
- 17:46Speaker 4: you have to provide the thing as promised. Like that's
- 17:50Speaker 4: kind of the, that's kind of the cycle of business.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And it's like, it's, it's a really dumbed down version,
- 17:55Speaker 4: but it's like, if you start with the basic nuts
- 17:57Speaker 4: and bolts, get it going, like actually start moving yourself.
- 18:04Speaker 3: In that direction. It's like, then you'll kind of start
- 18:06Speaker 3: piecing things together.
- 18:08Speaker 4: I think a lot of people, Right now, because they're
- 18:12Speaker 4: so inundated with things, it's like they're sitting back waiting
- 18:16Speaker 4: for the last piece of the puzzle to fall to
- 18:20Speaker 4: start building the puzzle. And it's like, life is a
- 18:24Speaker 4: game of endless pieces. So you're never going to get
- 18:28Speaker 4: that last piece.
- 18:30Speaker 3: You're going to get pieces throughout.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Life until the end of life. You're going to keep
- 18:35Speaker 4: falling into your 80s.
- 18:37Speaker 3: And so.
- 18:40Speaker 4: You might not know what you're building, but if you
- 18:42Speaker 4: just start connecting the pieces, eventually like you'll start seeing like, okay,
- 18:47Speaker 4: like I can see kind of where this is going,
- 18:50Speaker 4: where if they're just a pile of pieces and you're
- 18:52Speaker 4: waiting for the last one to fall and you're sitting
- 18:55Speaker 4: there and they just keep falling. It's like, now you
- 18:58Speaker 4: start getting like overwhelmed because like, now what do I do?
- 19:01Speaker 3: They're just piling up, piling up. And I still don't
- 19:03Speaker 3: know what this thing is. Right.
- 19:04Speaker 4: And it's like, well, the guy that didn't know what
- 19:07Speaker 4: it was started building it. and then kind of started
- 19:10Speaker 4: getting the vision of what he was building. Where you're waiting,
- 19:14Speaker 4: and now it's like you're anxious, you're just overwhelmed with
- 19:19Speaker 4: everything because you're waiting to start.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and that energy, that creative energy that allows you
- 19:27Speaker 2: to build, whether it's building a project outside of yourself
- 19:31Speaker 2: or building yourself, which is really the topic of conversation today,
- 19:36Speaker 2: is that I can take that energy and sit on it.
- 19:41Speaker 2: And it'll just like, that's the weird thing about gathering
- 19:44Speaker 2: information makes, I get a little dopamine. It makes me
- 19:47Speaker 2: feel like I've done something, but I haven't done anything yet.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I've just, you know, learned a new fact.
- 19:53Speaker 4: That's the motivational informational trap, right? Is it's like motivation, information, motivation, information.
- 19:59Speaker 4: It's like you consume this and it's like, oh yes,
- 20:02Speaker 4: like now, now I've got it, but I need a
- 20:05Speaker 4: little bit more. you always need a little bit more before.
- 20:08Speaker 3: You do anything and it's just like no man like
- 20:11Speaker 3: you just gotta you gotta start.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Because that that information all by itself can actually change
- 20:17Speaker 2: your physiology and and your physiology is where where things
- 20:21Speaker 2: really stick and and i imagine one of the things
- 20:25Speaker 2: i just hear by talking with you that your interest
- 20:27Speaker 2: in psychology came from you like understanding how the mind
- 20:30Speaker 2: works just didn't sound like it was as lucrative as
- 20:33Speaker 2: the construction at the time.
- 20:35Speaker 4: And I've always had an interest in human behavior and
- 20:42Speaker 4: how we think and how we interpret things. And it's
- 20:46Speaker 4: pretty interesting because a lot of what we do, we
- 20:52Speaker 4: use language and we use other things to kind of
- 20:56Speaker 4: either push the blame or give us a loophole to
- 21:00Speaker 4: give us an.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Out, right?
- 21:02Speaker 4: So it's like, like some of the language that we
- 21:05Speaker 4: use is we'll use the word try. You know, it's like,
- 21:08Speaker 4: like try is the worst word you can use because
- 21:13Speaker 4: you can't try to do anything. Like either you did
- 21:15Speaker 4: it or you didn't do it.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Try means if I feel like it, if I have time,
- 21:22Speaker 4: like if I get around to it, I'll do it.
- 21:25Speaker 4: So there's always constantly like two versions of you fighting
- 21:30Speaker 4: for attention. And, It's one of them saying, I'm going
- 21:36Speaker 4: to try to go to bed at nine. I'm going
- 21:37Speaker 4: to try to wake up at five. I'm going to
- 21:39Speaker 4: try to go to the gym. The other one's saying,
- 21:42Speaker 4: I'm going to bed at nine. I'm waking up at five.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I'm getting to the gym. It's like, which version of
- 21:48Speaker 4: you do you think actually got the job? You know,
- 21:50Speaker 4: the one that was certain that was definitely going to
- 21:53Speaker 4: do it or the one that's like, if I feel
- 21:56Speaker 4: good enough, I will do it. Tomorrow, like tomorrow's another one.
- 22:01Speaker 4: everyone's like, ah, I'll do it tomorrow. Well, when you
- 22:05Speaker 4: really think about it, have you ever seen tomorrow? Like
- 22:08Speaker 4: tomorrow doesn't exist. It's like, it's a mirage off into
- 22:11Speaker 4: the distance that you see. And then when you get there,
- 22:13Speaker 4: it disappears because tomorrow never exists because by the time
- 22:18Speaker 4: tomorrow gets here, it's today. So it's like, if it's
- 22:22Speaker 4: something that you can just do now, don't wait till tomorrow,
- 22:25Speaker 4: just do it now.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 22:27Speaker 4: But it's all these little, all these little excuses that
- 22:30Speaker 4: we tell ourselves and these loopholes that we create to
- 22:33Speaker 4: procrastinate or put things off. And it's like, if we
- 22:36Speaker 4: can just kind of understand that we're doing that and
- 22:40Speaker 4: that the only person that we're lying to is ourself,
- 22:44Speaker 4: then we can, we can understand that and be like, okay, well,
- 22:46Speaker 4: if I just use different language around this, it might
- 22:49Speaker 4: make me a little bit more apt to do the
- 22:52Speaker 4: thing that I need to do or the thing that
- 22:53Speaker 4: I want to do.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah. There's a, Jesus had a way of talking in parables.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you're familiar in some ways, but one of
- 23:03Speaker 2: the things he said was, any man who puts his
- 23:05Speaker 2: hands to the plow and turns away from it is
- 23:08Speaker 2: not worthy of the kingdom of heaven. And I'm not
- 23:11Speaker 2: much of a farmer, but I have plowed a field before.
- 23:14Speaker 2: So you put your hands to the plow and you
- 23:16Speaker 2: start working and you realize that this is going to
- 23:19Speaker 2: take a while. It's really hard work, right? Like, man,
- 23:23Speaker 2: this is awful. But there's only one way to get
- 23:26Speaker 2: the job done. And that is to finish the job.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Like you have put your hands to the plow and
- 23:34Speaker 2: now you need to finish the job. And one of
- 23:36Speaker 2: the things Jesus was saying to his disciples, and it
- 23:39Speaker 2: echoes throughout the last 2000 years, is if you are
- 23:44Speaker 2: going to live your life in such a way that
- 23:48Speaker 2: you can be transformed by what God did here, then
- 23:51Speaker 2: you're going to be the kind of person who once
- 23:53Speaker 2: you get started, you don't stop. Like you don't allow
- 23:56Speaker 2: yourself to stop. You don't let hunger, you don't let pain,
- 23:59Speaker 2: you don't let irritability, fatigue, you don't let those things
- 24:04Speaker 2: get in your way. You hold on to what you
- 24:06Speaker 2: said you were going to do and you do it.
- 24:08Speaker 2: And that sort of grit language, I think, is something
- 24:12Speaker 2: you and I share. I'm curious in your thoughts, because
- 24:16Speaker 2: hearing some of the things you've spoken about, both in
- 24:18Speaker 2: your speaking, but also in your writing, when you picture
- 24:22Speaker 2: the grit language, that is required to finish a job,
- 24:27Speaker 2: to set your mind to something, to lock in, to
- 24:29Speaker 2: do that thing. When you picture that, at what point is,
- 24:34Speaker 2: in your mind, grit can be perseverance. That would be positive.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I'm going to stick with what I said I was
- 24:40Speaker 2: going to do. But grit can also be like stubbornness
- 24:43Speaker 2: in a negative way. I'm going to dig my heels
- 24:45Speaker 2: in on the things that don't work just because I
- 24:49Speaker 2: don't like being wrong. Something like that. In your mind,
- 24:52Speaker 2: where is the line for you? where stubbornness is a
- 24:56Speaker 2: good thing and not necessarily a bad thing.
- 24:58Speaker 4: So I would say like, you have to, that's the
- 25:03Speaker 4: thing with like optimization is it's like you, you have to,
- 25:07Speaker 4: you have to have the grit to move forward.
- 25:10Speaker 3: You have to have that.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Perseverance to move forward, but you also have to observe
- 25:16Speaker 4: everything every day.
- 25:18Speaker 3: And am I optimizing or am I being counterproductive?
- 25:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:22Speaker 4: So, like to tie it into like fitness, right? It's like,
- 25:27Speaker 4: I don't take days off. I go to the gym
- 25:29Speaker 4: and it's like, I don't have a set day off.
- 25:31Speaker 4: It's not like, you know, two days on one day off,
- 25:34Speaker 4: two days on one day off. Like I'll go, there's
- 25:36Speaker 4: days I'll go 12, 13 days straight.
- 25:40Speaker 3: And then it's like, oh, I need a day off.
- 25:42Speaker 3: But it's like, it's listening to your body.
- 25:44Speaker 4: It's like, I can go those 10, 12, 13 days
- 25:47Speaker 4: sometimes and be good.
- 25:49Speaker 3: And then take a day off and then get back
- 25:51Speaker 3: at it.
- 25:52Speaker 4: There's other days it's like, I'll go two days hard
- 25:54Speaker 4: and it's like, I need a day or two off.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Right. So me pushing through those two days probably is
- 26:02Speaker 3: going to be counterproductive. Right.
- 26:04Speaker 4: And so it's like, there's just that you've got to
- 26:08Speaker 4: always constantly be optimizing, you know, because it's, it's, it's
- 26:12Speaker 4: moving and it's getting that momentum and it's, it's creating
- 26:15Speaker 4: that pattern to continually go. But like, if you never
- 26:19Speaker 4: optimize on that, like, you go to the gym and
- 26:22Speaker 4: you put 100 pounds on the bench press and you
- 26:24Speaker 4: lift it 10 times right when you went to the
- 26:27Speaker 4: gym you do that over if you do that for
- 26:30Speaker 4: a year and a half are you are you optimizing are.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You getting any better are you getting any bigger are
- 26:35Speaker 3: you getting any stronger if you just put.
- 26:38Speaker 4: 100 pounds on lift it 10 times and then leave
- 26:41Speaker 4: you know what i mean like like you're doing it
- 26:44Speaker 4: repeatedly but you're not going all in like you're going
- 26:48Speaker 4: through the motions and so if are you going all
- 26:51Speaker 4: in and doing like doing everything that you can to
- 26:55Speaker 4: optimize that to build something? Like what direction are you
- 27:00Speaker 4: trying to build? Like are you putting on muscle? Are
- 27:02Speaker 4: you putting on strength? Because there's two different ways to lift, right?
- 27:06Speaker 4: But it's like you constantly have to either be putting
- 27:08Speaker 4: more weight on the bar or doing more reps to
- 27:11Speaker 4: be able to make anything grow.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So the, the perseverance versus stubbornness thing there is, is
- 27:19Speaker 2: knowing what's worth being stubborn about. I'm going to, I'm
- 27:22Speaker 2: going to grow. I'm going to progress over time, but
- 27:25Speaker 2: everything that I do serves that purpose.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:29Speaker 4: So there's kind of like, you've got the motivation, which
- 27:33Speaker 4: kind of is like, it gets you excited and then
- 27:36Speaker 4: you get the discipline that gets you moving.
- 27:38Speaker 3: But I think the biggest driver.
- 27:40Speaker 4: That you can find that like moves mountains is is
- 27:45Speaker 4: what is it that you truly desire? Like desire turns
- 27:50Speaker 4: into like, I'm going to do it at all costs.
- 27:53Speaker 4: So if you have a desire that's big enough and
- 27:56Speaker 4: worth building out that you know you're truly committed to,
- 28:00Speaker 4: that you know is going to work, like that will,
- 28:03Speaker 4: you'll find a way to overcome all odds. You can
- 28:07Speaker 4: only be disciplined and go make yourself do things that
- 28:09Speaker 4: you don't want to do so many times before you
- 28:12Speaker 4: hit burn, right? And motivation is kind of one of those,
- 28:16Speaker 4: like you feel good about it, but then that wears
- 28:19Speaker 4: off really quick too. But it's just like having that
- 28:22Speaker 4: deep seated, like passionate desire on what's the overall vision
- 28:27Speaker 4: that I have on where this thing's going. Like that,
- 28:32Speaker 4: that can actually move mountains. And, you know, tying it
- 28:36Speaker 4: kind of back into what you were saying about plowing
- 28:39Speaker 4: fields and stuff like that is, you know, you've got to,
- 28:43Speaker 4: you've got to put in the work and it's like,
- 28:45Speaker 4: the way I look at it is God gave us life, right?
- 28:49Speaker 4: It's up to us to decide what we want to
- 28:53Speaker 4: do with that life, what we're going to do with
- 28:55Speaker 4: that life. And part of, I think like if there
- 28:58Speaker 4: is a judgment or whatever judgment day that you have,
- 29:02Speaker 4: it's like what you did with that life is going
- 29:06Speaker 4: to be accounted for in that judgment, right? Like I think,
- 29:10Speaker 4: did you find out what you were truly capable of? like,
- 29:13Speaker 4: did you do, did you go all in? Did you
- 29:16Speaker 4: live a life worth living? Or did you sit around
- 29:19Speaker 4: on the sidelines and complain and make excuses and live
- 29:23Speaker 4: a life of regrets, right?
- 29:25Speaker 3: And it's like, to me, I think you were given
- 29:28Speaker 3: this life.
- 29:29Speaker 4: And the biggest slap in the face that you can
- 29:32Speaker 4: give God is doing diddly with it, right? Like doing nothing,
- 29:36Speaker 4: like sitting back and wasting. I think that's the biggest
- 29:40Speaker 4: slap that you can give.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Anyone and that's what we're constantly saying on the show
- 29:44Speaker 2: god gave you this body and i'm not saying everybody
- 29:48Speaker 2: needs to have six-pack abs or bench press 300 pounds
- 29:51Speaker 2: but we want you to make the most of it
- 29:53Speaker 2: you get.
- 29:54Speaker 4: One become the best version of you that you can
- 29:57Speaker 4: possibly be right you got it and you may not
- 30:00Speaker 4: want to be 5% body fat shredded with big muscles
- 30:04Speaker 4: or anything like that.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Just an average look, right?
- 30:07Speaker 4: But it's like, be healthy enough to be capable enough
- 30:10Speaker 4: to do things. Like if you have a hard time
- 30:13Speaker 4: getting off the couch, walking to your car without sweating
- 30:16Speaker 4: and like bending over and can't breathe, like probably ought
- 30:20Speaker 4: to fix that. I think being faithful and being worthy
- 30:24Speaker 4: is like part of it. But then like being physically
- 30:28Speaker 4: capable and, able-bodied, physically able to do things, I think
- 30:33Speaker 4: that's another aspect, too. I think you have to focus
- 30:37Speaker 4: on being able to do the things. You can grow
- 30:42Speaker 4: a business, right? You can grow a billion-dollar business, but
- 30:47Speaker 4: if you're pre-diabetic and you can't walk and you can't
- 30:49Speaker 4: move and you can't... You go to cool places, but
- 30:52Speaker 4: you can't physically go enjoy the cool things that you're
- 30:54Speaker 4: seeing other than sitting from a recliner or you know,
- 30:58Speaker 4: a lounge chair or something like that. It's like, oh,
- 31:00Speaker 4: this is pretty, but, you know, I'd like to climb
- 31:02Speaker 4: that mountain, but I'm too fat to climb that mountain.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Yeah, then the body becomes an impediment to what it
- 31:08Speaker 2: is that you could be enjoying or doing.
- 31:11Speaker 3: For sure.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Yeah, the things that you desire and the things that
- 31:14Speaker 2: you're passionate about. I actually want to come back to
- 31:15Speaker 2: that question a little bit because I work with a
- 31:18Speaker 2: lot of men. I work with a lot of women, too,
- 31:20Speaker 2: from a coaching perspective. But in the fitness industry, the
- 31:24Speaker 2: easy problem to articulate is many people know what to do.
- 31:27Speaker 2: They're just not doing it. but you touched on something
- 31:30Speaker 2: really important. And you said that if you desire that thing,
- 31:34Speaker 2: then you're going to aim at it and get after
- 31:37Speaker 2: it no matter what. And I've worked with a lot
- 31:40Speaker 2: of individuals that they would tell you that they're not
- 31:43Speaker 2: really sure what they're passionate about, or they haven't found
- 31:47Speaker 2: that thing that they desire so much that they would
- 31:50Speaker 2: actually work toward it. And I would actually say that's false.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Many people know that too. They're just not being honest.
- 31:57Speaker 2: But in your mind, how does somebody who's disconnected from
- 32:01Speaker 2: what they desire that they'll work really hard to do?
- 32:04Speaker 2: What are some things that they can do to get
- 32:06Speaker 2: connected to that?
- 32:08Speaker 4: I think it's having like self conversations, right? Like for me,
- 32:12Speaker 4: I have, for me, like I'll stand in front of
- 32:15Speaker 4: a mirror and actually talk to myself and ask myself
- 32:17Speaker 4: if I did, if I did what I said.
- 32:20Speaker 3: I was going to do that, you know, like self accountability.
- 32:23Speaker 4: But I think on like a deeper level, I would
- 32:27Speaker 4: say there's a majority amount of people that will spend
- 32:30Speaker 4: a lot of time uncovering what other people think, feel,
- 32:35Speaker 4: and believe. I've got a buddy that he was born
- 32:41Speaker 4: into the Mormon religion and made a couple tours to
- 32:48Speaker 4: Iraq and was kind of just lost for a while
- 32:52Speaker 4: in like, what do I actually believe?
- 32:55Speaker 3: Because I don't know that I believe in this religion.
- 32:58Speaker 4: And so, like, honestly, this guy had spent thousands of hours, like,
- 33:02Speaker 4: different religions, different, like, everything, just trying to figure out, like,
- 33:06Speaker 4: what he was more aligned with. And he ended up
- 33:09Speaker 4: finally falling into Christianity, and I think he's been, like,
- 33:13Speaker 4: devout in, like, Christianity religion.
- 33:15Speaker 3: For the last two or three years. We had a
- 33:18Speaker 3: conversation not too long ago.
- 33:20Speaker 4: We're kind of just, you know, we're talking back and forth,
- 33:23Speaker 4: and he's telling me a little on his religion, and
- 33:25Speaker 4: I'm just kind of like, spouting out the philosophies.
- 33:28Speaker 3: That I have in my head.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And he's like, Oh, well that lines up with like
- 33:32Speaker 4: a Judea, you know, vision or that lines up with
- 33:35Speaker 4: like yin and yang or a monk is I'm typing.
- 33:38Speaker 4: And then finally I'm like, I don't know what it
- 33:40Speaker 4: lines up with. I just know this.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Is like what I put together in my head.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:46Speaker 4: And so it's like, as he spent thousands of hours
- 33:50Speaker 4: figuring out what other people think, feel and believe so
- 33:53Speaker 4: that he could align himself with that. I've probably spent
- 33:56Speaker 4: those same thousand hours sitting down trying to figure out what.
- 34:00Speaker 3: I think, feel, and believe internally.
- 34:04Speaker 4: And even though they do line up on the backside,
- 34:07Speaker 4: it's like I feel more convicted on what I believe
- 34:12Speaker 4: because it's actually like how I'm interpreting life, how I'm
- 34:16Speaker 4: interpreting the world, how I'm interpreting people, like how I'm
- 34:19Speaker 4: piecing it together to make it make sense.
- 34:22Speaker 3: And it, in a way, makes me uniquely me. Right.
- 34:27Speaker 3: And it makes me.
- 34:28Speaker 4: Unapologetically me because this is what, this is truly what
- 34:32Speaker 4: I believe. Right. And so I think kind of tying
- 34:36Speaker 4: in what you're saying is it's like, if you can
- 34:38Speaker 4: legitimately sit back and have that conversation with yourself on
- 34:43Speaker 4: where you see yourself going, like what, what you see
- 34:47Speaker 4: the grander purpose of your life being and be honest
- 34:51Speaker 4: with yourself, like it'll come and it may not be tomorrow.
- 34:55Speaker 4: but it'll be at some point it's going to connect
- 35:01Speaker 4: the dots, you know, because part of my deal has
- 35:03Speaker 4: always been building things, right? Like it's always been building,
- 35:07Speaker 4: building buildings or building structures or, you know, building something
- 35:11Speaker 4: physically tangible. Going into like the last year and a half,
- 35:16Speaker 4: I'm like, legitimately, I've built something that relies solely on me.
- 35:22Speaker 4: So if I die tomorrow, every one of these around
- 35:27Speaker 4: me are going to run this into the ground in
- 35:29Speaker 4: six months because they have no clue. But the reason
- 35:33Speaker 4: they have no clue is because I never sat them
- 35:36Speaker 4: down and explain them. And so I'm thinking about it
- 35:41Speaker 4: and I'm like, you know, I've got, I've got my
- 35:43Speaker 4: kid kind of running this project manager, taking care of
- 35:46Speaker 4: some of the jobs.
- 35:47Speaker 3: I'm like, would you want to partner with me? Your
- 35:50Speaker 3: knowledge will be your body, right? Like you learn how.
- 35:53Speaker 4: To essentially over time, make me irrelevant and I'll make
- 35:57Speaker 4: you a full 50, 50 party. But as, as you're
- 36:00Speaker 4: working towards that, I'll bring you on incrementally in percentage
- 36:04Speaker 4: of ownership. Like now it's like, you know, with the book,
- 36:08Speaker 4: with the app that we have, I've kind of, I've
- 36:11Speaker 4: looked at like my overall philosophy of like building things
- 36:16Speaker 4: and kind of flipped it into now I'm building people.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I'm building physically able body capable people. I'm building people,
- 36:25Speaker 4: with the book to be able to, you know, build
- 36:29Speaker 4: that version of them that they want to be, right?
- 36:31Speaker 4: Because like I said, there's two different versions of you
- 36:33Speaker 4: that you're constantly building.
- 36:35Speaker 3: And it's kind of like heaven and hell, right?
- 36:38Speaker 4: Like, are you building to be righteous or are you
- 36:41Speaker 4: building towards temptation? You know, temptations, the complacency, temptations, the,
- 36:48Speaker 4: you know, sitting around making excuses, not doing what you,
- 36:53Speaker 4: told yourself you're going to do lying to yourself constantly
- 36:56Speaker 4: breaking promises to yourself where you know living more righteous
- 37:01Speaker 4: would be getting out there and finding out what you're
- 37:05Speaker 4: capable of like doing the hard shit that's going to
- 37:08Speaker 4: make you a better version of yourself being able to
- 37:12Speaker 4: overcome obstacles like being able to slay those dragons being
- 37:16Speaker 4: able to like just go wreak chaos and havoc on
- 37:19Speaker 4: the world and leave your little mark at whatever it
- 37:22Speaker 4: is that you're trying to leave.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Right. Like, and it could be a huge mark.
- 37:26Speaker 4: It could be a small mark, but whatever vision that
- 37:29Speaker 4: you see yourself going in, like find that as like
- 37:33Speaker 4: the main desire for that driver to like go for.
- 37:39Speaker 3: And if you're like me, it's like, anytime you get close,
- 37:42Speaker 3: it always changes.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Like it's always, it's always climbing. It's always changing. And
- 37:47Speaker 4: You never really get satisfied with where you're at. It's like, well,
- 37:51Speaker 4: I did this. Let's do this. And you always just
- 37:53Speaker 4: keep pushing that bar, and you always keep proving to
- 37:56Speaker 4: yourself that you're capable of more.
- 37:58Speaker 2: As you continue to grow, you don't necessarily take so
- 38:01Speaker 2: much a pursuit of pleasure. It's pleasure in the pursuit
- 38:06Speaker 2: of that thing.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's like you're not looking at getting to
- 38:10Speaker 4: the top of the mountain to see the view.
- 38:11Speaker 3: It's like more on the climb, right?
- 38:13Speaker 4: Because realistically, the climb's where all the fun stuff happens.
- 38:16Speaker 3: That's right.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Like, oh man, I almost fell off that cliff and died. Like,
- 38:21Speaker 4: but I didn't, I'm going, you know what I mean?
- 38:23Speaker 4: It's where all the chaos, the mayhem and the excitement.
- 38:26Speaker 4: So for me, it's like, I like that climb because
- 38:30Speaker 4: that's where all the excitement. I guess kind of like
- 38:33Speaker 4: in a way, it's like what you're truly passionate about
- 38:36Speaker 4: right now may not be what you're truly passionate about
- 38:40Speaker 4: 10 years from now. But what you're truly passionate about
- 38:44Speaker 4: now as you're building towards it it's going to change
- 38:48Speaker 4: and it's going to ever evolve, right? So like I said,
- 38:52Speaker 4: I built things and now I'm kind of transitioning into
- 38:55Speaker 4: trying to build more.
- 38:58Speaker 3: People, more capable, able people. So it's still the same process.
- 39:03Speaker 4: We're still building, but just instead of what we're building,
- 39:07Speaker 4: it's who we're building.
- 39:09Speaker 2: And so you're building... people. And right now you're in
- 39:12Speaker 2: the process of publishing a book and you're also in
- 39:15Speaker 2: the process of launching an app. Can you tell us
- 39:18Speaker 2: more about that?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:19Speaker 4: So I got the new fit fitness app. It's a
- 39:23Speaker 4: new fit with an NU. So that spelling, the NU
- 39:27Speaker 4: spelling is Portuguese for naked.
- 39:29Speaker 3: So it's kind of like naked fit. So look good naked.
- 39:32Speaker 4: Like, I think that's everybody's, I think that's everybody's goal
- 39:36Speaker 4: is to be able to look at themselves naked and
- 39:37Speaker 4: be like, yeah, I look good. Right. So whatever version
- 39:41Speaker 4: of that is, whether it's a big muscular guy or
- 39:43Speaker 4: just a fit cone guy, whatever that be like, we've
- 39:46Speaker 4: got the new fit app, which is a, strength conditioning
- 39:51Speaker 4: hit cardio app. So you go on there, it's 25
- 39:54Speaker 4: minute workouts, 20 to 25 minute workouts. Um, you can
- 39:59Speaker 4: do it from your living room. You don't need equipment.
- 40:02Speaker 4: You don't need a gym membership. It's 99 cents a month.
- 40:05Speaker 4: So like it kills basically all the excuses that you
- 40:09Speaker 4: can possibly have around.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I don't have time. I don't have money.
- 40:12Speaker 4: I don't have, you know, gym equipment. I don't want
- 40:16Speaker 4: to go to the gym. It's like, Do it from
- 40:18Speaker 4: your living room. You can do it from your bedroom.
- 40:20Speaker 4: You can do it from an office. It's 25 minutes.
- 40:23Speaker 4: It's less time than it takes to watch an episode
- 40:25Speaker 4: of Spongebob Squarepants. It's a dollar a month. You can
- 40:28Speaker 4: find the change in a dollar store park. So all
- 40:32Speaker 4: the excuses have basically been killed. It's just now all
- 40:36Speaker 4: you have to do is to start. But it's designed
- 40:39Speaker 4: to push you and it's designed to challenge you to
- 40:42Speaker 4: make you physically more capable and able of like doing
- 40:48Speaker 4: harder things and a lot of that aligns with the
- 40:52Speaker 4: book because both of them kind of coincide with like
- 40:56Speaker 4: building the best version of you that you can build
- 41:00Speaker 4: and fitness to me is like the biggest driver that
- 41:04Speaker 4: you can see move the needle quicker like you can
- 41:09Speaker 4: literally eat better move more be consistent and you can
- 41:13Speaker 4: step on the scale every week and see results so
- 41:16Speaker 4: fitness essentially creates like that momentum of, okay, now I'm
- 41:23Speaker 4: becoming more competent, right? Well, the competence creates confidence. The
- 41:27Speaker 4: confidence creates confirmation that what you're doing is working. And
- 41:31Speaker 4: that confirmation then becomes the motivation to continue that cycle.
- 41:36Speaker 4: And so as you're doing that, you're building physically, mentally,
- 41:39Speaker 4: and emotionally through these hard workouts. to where eventually it's
- 41:44Speaker 4: like that can translate into every other aspect of your life.
- 41:49Speaker 4: You've built the competence in this, and you've built the
- 41:54Speaker 4: competence in this, so now you're a more capable, competent
- 42:00Speaker 4: person that can translate that into every other aspect of life,
- 42:05Speaker 4: whether it be business. If you're just an employee, you
- 42:10Speaker 4: can be a better employee. You can be a better
- 42:12Speaker 4: business owner. be a better husband better father better better
- 42:15Speaker 4: wife right like you can be better in your faith
- 42:19Speaker 4: whatever it be like you you can take those.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Principles and apply them to all other aspects of.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Life one of the things we talk about here is
- 42:29Speaker 2: integrity and integrity is you can define it a bunch
- 42:32Speaker 2: of different ways but as a builder you'll appreciate jesus's
- 42:34Speaker 2: definition which is that the man who hears my teachings
- 42:39Speaker 2: and doesn't do it will build his house on sand
- 42:42Speaker 2: And then when the wind comes and the rain comes,
- 42:44Speaker 2: they'll beat on that house and it'll fall. But the
- 42:47Speaker 2: man who does my teachings and builds his life on
- 42:51Speaker 2: a rock, and the wind comes and the rain comes
- 42:53Speaker 2: and that beats on the house, but it doesn't fall.
- 42:56Speaker 2: When I see and understand fitness, both physiologically and psychologically,
- 43:02Speaker 2: as the thing I said I was going to do,
- 43:05Speaker 2: and then I did it. And because I did it,
- 43:08Speaker 2: whether it was hard or easy or whatever I did,
- 43:11Speaker 2: I am taking everything that's in me, all the pieces
- 43:15Speaker 2: of me that want to go in a bunch of
- 43:16Speaker 2: different directions, and I am bringing them under one roof.
- 43:21Speaker 2: I'm bringing them under one thing. That's integrity means put together.
- 43:26Speaker 3: It means solid.
- 43:28Speaker 2: It means inseparable. And what I hear from you is
- 43:32Speaker 2: a very similar idea in that if I pursue fitness
- 43:37Speaker 2: and actually do what I said I'm going to do,
- 43:38Speaker 2: maybe imperfectly at first, I just, maybe I'm bad at it.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Maybe I can't even finish my SpongeBob SquarePants long workout, right?
- 43:48Speaker 2: The first time. But if I do it, and then
- 43:52Speaker 2: I consistently come back to that thing, and I keep
- 43:56Speaker 2: working at it, then not only will I be exhibiting integrity,
- 44:01Speaker 2: but I'll also be building integrity into the system of myself.
- 44:05Speaker 2: And that integrity will show up in all of my
- 44:08Speaker 2: other endeavors, in my day.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Yeah for sure that's like that's the thing is like
- 44:16Speaker 4: it's designed like if you're if you're starting out the
- 44:19Speaker 4: fitness app is designed like the warm-up if you've been
- 44:22Speaker 4: sitting on the couch and haven't done anything by the
- 44:24Speaker 4: time you get done with the warm-up you're like oh
- 44:25Speaker 4: there's more like i'm done like you said right like
- 44:29Speaker 4: you do it for a week and it's like oh
- 44:31Speaker 4: the warm-up's not so bad i'm starting to get into
- 44:35Speaker 4: where i'm going on the workout right and then it's
- 44:38Speaker 4: like oh now now i'm two weeks in, it's like,
- 44:40Speaker 4: I'm getting through the workouts. Not very good, but I'm
- 44:43Speaker 4: getting through them. After a month, it's like, yeah. I'm
- 44:48Speaker 4: getting through the full 25 minutes. I'm keeping pace.
- 44:51Speaker 3: It's there. That builds an.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Inner confidence in you that nobody can take from you.
- 45:00Speaker 4: I did this thing that was super hard that I
- 45:02Speaker 4: couldn't even do a month ago that I'm now finishing
- 45:05Speaker 4: a month later. It's like, it just builds that version
- 45:10Speaker 4: where it's like, well, if I'm capable of doing this,
- 45:12Speaker 4: what else am I capable of doing?
- 45:14Speaker 3: That's kind of the start point of like being able
- 45:17Speaker 3: to expand it into every other aspect of life.
- 45:20Speaker 2: We just did a 5k event here locally for faithful fitness.
- 45:24Speaker 2: We ran a 5k event to have individuals from the community.
- 45:28Speaker 2: And we had people from all different walks of life.
- 45:30Speaker 2: We had athletes who are really fast and we had
- 45:33Speaker 2: people who had never done a 5k before. And We
- 45:35Speaker 2: even had an individual who wrestles with diabetes and significant
- 45:40Speaker 2: pain and whatnot, and this was the first 5K he's
- 45:42Speaker 2: ever done in his mid-60s, walked the whole thing, right?
- 45:46Speaker 2: And there was something I consistently heard after the 5K
- 45:49Speaker 2: from the people who had never done a 5K before.
- 45:51Speaker 2: And if you don't know what a 5K is, it's
- 45:53Speaker 2: just 3.1 miles, like whether it's a run or walk
- 45:56Speaker 2: or crawl. But I consistently heard from people where, I
- 45:59Speaker 2: didn't know I could do that. I wonder what else
- 46:01Speaker 2: I can do. And that... There's just something really powerful
- 46:06Speaker 2: about fitness to do that for you to say, I
- 46:09Speaker 2: didn't think I could, but then I did. And now
- 46:13Speaker 2: that I did that thing.
- 46:15Speaker 3: I want to do more.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I want to do more. There's a whole world of
- 46:19Speaker 2: things that I didn't realize were possible for me. And
- 46:22Speaker 2: it's worth exploring.
- 46:24Speaker 4: A lot of it's fear, like fear of failure or
- 46:26Speaker 4: fear of whatever it be, you know, but it's like,
- 46:30Speaker 4: fear is like this pond that's like a mile wide
- 46:33Speaker 4: and an.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Inch deep, right? You think it's the opposite.
- 46:37Speaker 4: You think it's like 100 feet wide and 1,000 feet
- 46:40Speaker 4: deep and I'm going to drown before I get on
- 46:42Speaker 4: the other side. It's like when you step both feet in,
- 46:47Speaker 4: you're like, oh, it's not so bad.
- 46:50Speaker 3: As you keep going, it's like, yeah, it's really not
- 46:52Speaker 3: so bad.
- 46:54Speaker 4: You build yourself capable enough that even though it's hard,
- 46:58Speaker 4: you know that you can overcome it over time. Like
- 47:02Speaker 4: you said, with walk, you know, walking or running this 5k.
- 47:05Speaker 4: It's like, Oh, what else am I capable of doing?
- 47:07Speaker 4: Can I do 10?
- 47:09Speaker 3: Can I do 20? You never know until you go
- 47:11Speaker 3: find out, you know, go, go try a 10. See
- 47:14Speaker 3: how that goes. Go try a 20.
- 47:17Speaker 4: You don't know until you do it, but you're, you're
- 47:18Speaker 4: never going to learn that sitting on the side. You're
- 47:21Speaker 4: never going to learn that cheering for your favorite football.
- 47:25Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like get on the film
- 47:27Speaker 3: and join, join life. Yeah. Because that's where life is,
- 47:31Speaker 3: is on the field, not the side of it. It's
- 47:33Speaker 3: not the stands.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Well, Brock, I want to invite our listeners that if
- 47:37Speaker 2: what you're saying right now is something that resonates with them,
- 47:40Speaker 2: I'm going to make sure that there's a link in
- 47:41Speaker 2: the show notes here for people to get connected both
- 47:44Speaker 2: to what you've got coming for your app, but also
- 47:46Speaker 2: for your book. But I also wanted to give you
- 47:47Speaker 2: an opportunity to have the last word before I pray
- 47:50Speaker 2: over you and pray over our conversation. So what do
- 47:53Speaker 2: you hope if somebody hears nothing else from you today,
- 47:56Speaker 2: what do you hope they hear from you?
- 47:57Speaker 3: I think the biggest... Life hack I can give anybody.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Is do instantly what others do eventually, and you'll be
- 48:05Speaker 4: light years ahead of any competition that you'll ever have.
- 48:08Speaker 4: If you do instantly what others do eventually, it's like
- 48:11Speaker 4: you can try and fail and do and fail before
- 48:15Speaker 4: they even start. So by the time you're on your
- 48:18Speaker 4: third or fourth failure, you've optimized this thing to where
- 48:21Speaker 4: it's running like clockwork, and they will never catch you.
- 48:26Speaker 4: they can never catch you because they hadn't started. Or
- 48:28Speaker 4: if they have started, they still got to go through
- 48:30Speaker 4: the same process you went through.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Right? So it's like, but you're already going to be
- 48:34Speaker 3: ahead of them.
- 48:34Speaker 4: So there's no way that they're ever going to catch
- 48:36Speaker 4: you as long as you keep doing what you're doing.
- 48:39Speaker 4: The biggest thing that I can say is just be
- 48:42Speaker 4: the best version of you that you possibly can. Be
- 48:45Speaker 4: aware that that's what you're intending on doing. Have that
- 48:51Speaker 4: uncomfortable conversation at least weekly with yourself. to hold yourself
- 48:55Speaker 4: accountable and then just take massive.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Action, right? Like do immediately what others do eventually.
- 49:02Speaker 4: And that'll get that ball rolling and that'll get you
- 49:05Speaker 4: going in the direction you need to go.
- 49:07Speaker 2: I appreciate that, brother. I'm going to close this out
- 49:10Speaker 2: here in prayer. So if you would, bow your head
- 49:13Speaker 2: with me. Father God, thank you so much for the
- 49:15Speaker 2: opportunity to spend time with my brother Brock today. I
- 49:17Speaker 2: pray that you would bless his endeavors. and show him
- 49:21Speaker 2: the next steps in the direction of building people well.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Thank you for his heart to help others on that front.
- 49:26Speaker 2: And I pray, Lord, that your guidance and that your
- 49:28Speaker 2: Holy Spirit would empower him to do so. I also
- 49:32Speaker 2: pray that as individuals grow, you would bring purpose and
- 49:37Speaker 2: truth to their life. so that the better version of
- 49:39Speaker 2: themselves they're becoming is for a meaningful reason. We love you, Lord,
- 49:44Speaker 2: in Jesus' name. Amen. Hey, thank you so much for
- 49:48Speaker 2: listening in on my interview with Brock Holyoak. Before you go,
- 49:51Speaker 2: I want to add one final thought to that conversation.
- 49:55Speaker 2: I've been processing this interview since Brock and I stopped recording,
- 49:58Speaker 2: and the reason I wanted to publish it is actually
- 50:00Speaker 2: the same reason that parts of it made me uncomfortable.
- 50:04Speaker 2: This conversation sounded so familiar to me, Not because I've
- 50:08Speaker 2: heard Brock's particular message before, but because I have personally
- 50:13Speaker 2: lived it. There was a season of my life and
- 50:16Speaker 2: work when Betterment itself was very close to the center
- 50:20Speaker 2: of my philosophy. Become stronger. Become more disciplined. Build confidence.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Do difficult things. Learn what you're capable of. Take massive action.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Get 1% better every single day. And I want you
- 50:37Speaker 2: to know I haven't abandoned those things. I think Christians
- 50:41Speaker 2: should be extraordinarily suspicious of laziness disguised as contentment. I
- 50:47Speaker 2: think we should keep our word. I think we should
- 50:50Speaker 2: develop more competence. I think we should confront fear. I
- 50:54Speaker 2: think there are a lot of people who already know
- 50:56Speaker 2: enough to take their next step and are hiding behind
- 50:59Speaker 2: more information because information feels safer than actions. There's a
- 51:05Speaker 2: powerful idea Brock brought up in our conversation. Sometimes we're
- 51:09Speaker 2: waiting until we possess all the pieces before we start building.
- 51:13Speaker 2: But that's just not how life works. That's not how
- 51:17Speaker 2: God made it. You start putting together the pieces you have,
- 51:21Speaker 2: and very often the act of building is what allows
- 51:24Speaker 2: you to finally see what you're actually building. I think
- 51:27Speaker 2: really there's a lot of wisdom there. There are things
- 51:30Speaker 2: you'll never learn through information gathering, because they can only
- 51:33Speaker 2: be learned through obedience, experience, failure, adjustment, and then trying again.
- 51:41Speaker 2: But here's where faithful fitness departs from simple self-improvement. Taking
- 51:47Speaker 2: action is a method, but it's not a purpose. Discipline
- 51:53Speaker 2: is incredibly powerful, but discipline cannot tell you what deserves
- 51:58Speaker 2: your devotion. Passion can give you tremendous energy, but passion
- 52:03Speaker 2: cannot tell you Whether the thing you desire is good.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Confidence can make you capable of doing remarkable things. But
- 52:13Speaker 2: confidence cannot tell you whether those remarkable things are actually
- 52:16Speaker 2: worth doing at all. And becoming the best version of
- 52:20Speaker 2: yourself sounds profound until you ask one more question. Best
- 52:25Speaker 2: for what? That's the question that eventually changed the trajectory
- 52:30Speaker 2: of my own work here. It's why we're Faithful Fitness
- 52:34Speaker 2: instead of the Betterment Co. The problem with secular self-improvement
- 52:39Speaker 2: isn't necessarily that it doesn't work. That's actually what makes
- 52:43Speaker 2: it so seductive. It often does work. You can lose weight.
- 52:47Speaker 2: You can build muscle. You can build the business. You
- 52:49Speaker 2: can become tougher. You can become more productive. You can
- 52:52Speaker 2: climb the mountain. And you can prove everybody wrong in
- 52:55Speaker 2: the process. You can accomplish the thing that you once
- 52:59Speaker 2: thought was impossible. And then you get to the top.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Discover it. That you're still confronted with a question that
- 53:08Speaker 2: your achievement cannot answer. What is my life for? And
- 53:15Speaker 2: Christianity gives us a radically different starting place than what
- 53:20Speaker 2: you heard in our conversation today. Scripture says you are
- 53:24Speaker 2: not your own. You were bought with a price. That
- 53:28Speaker 2: means God didn't simply hand me a body and say,
- 53:30Speaker 2: Hey Alex, see how impressive you can make this thing.
- 53:33Speaker 2: He entrusted me with one. My strength is entrusted to me.
- 53:37Speaker 2: My intellect is entrusted to me. My health is entrusted
- 53:41Speaker 2: to me. My opportunities and my time are entrusted to me.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Even my capacity to work, endure, create, lead, and protect,
- 53:51Speaker 2: and serve. Those are entrusted to me. That's stewardship. And
- 53:57Speaker 2: stewardship gives betterment somewhere to go. I don't merely want
- 54:02Speaker 2: to become stronger. I want to become strong enough. to
- 54:07Speaker 2: do what God asks me to do. I don't merely
- 54:11Speaker 2: want endurance so I can congratulate myself for enduring. I
- 54:14Speaker 2: want to be able to remain faithful when obedience to
- 54:18Speaker 2: God becomes costly for me. I don't want health simply
- 54:22Speaker 2: because being healthy feels good. I want my body to
- 54:27Speaker 2: be less of an obstacle to loving my family, serving
- 54:30Speaker 2: my neighbor, doing meaningful work, answering God's call. and remaining
- 54:37Speaker 2: useful for as many years as he gives me. That's
- 54:42Speaker 2: the very different definition of fitness. And maybe that's the
- 54:46Speaker 2: distinction I want you to leave with today. Self-improvement is
- 54:50Speaker 2: a powerful engine, but it's a terrible destination. We should
- 54:56Speaker 2: absolutely learn. We should absolutely act. We should stop waiting
- 55:00Speaker 2: for perfect circumstances. We should train. We should become capable.
- 55:06Speaker 2: And we should find out what God has placed inside
- 55:08Speaker 2: of us and refuse to waste what he's given us.
- 55:14Speaker 2: But we don't get to stop at, what do I want? Eventually,
- 55:18Speaker 2: the disciple of Jesus has to ask this, Lord, what
- 55:23Speaker 2: do you want to do with me? So if you're
- 55:26Speaker 2: listening today, you already know the healthy thing you need
- 55:29Speaker 2: to do. Maybe Brock's right. Stop gathering information. Just do it.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Go for the walk. Lift the weight. Prepare a better meal.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Turn off the screen. Go to bed on time. Make
- 55:45Speaker 2: the phone call. And take the next step. You probably
- 55:50Speaker 2: don't even need the whole map yet. But while you're
- 55:53Speaker 2: taking that step, don't merely ask whether you're becoming better.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Ask whether you're becoming more faithful. Better able to love.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Better able to serve. Better able to endure. Better able
- 56:07Speaker 2: to obey. Better able to make the most out of
- 56:11Speaker 2: the body God's given you. Because becoming more capable is
- 56:15Speaker 2: a worthy pursuit. But becoming more capable for the glory
- 56:19Speaker 2: of God, for the good of the people he's placed
- 56:22Speaker 2: around you, that is stewardship. That's faithful fitness. Thanks so
- 56:30Speaker 2: much for listening in with me. Guys, this has been
