Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You're listening to the I Align podcast with Flint Mitchell, where I provide stories, resources, and tools for ambitious builders who are ready to gain control over procrastination, overthinking, and distraction.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: You will never fully escape the emotions that have torn you down and sent you into periods of compulsive scrolling or a lack of focus or shame.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: But you can learn how to not only manage them, but also use them as a source of power for yourself.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I put out a piece of content recently talking about how a week or two into every January, I feel like absolute shit about myself.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Regardless of how well I'm doing in life, without fail, I get this pit in my stomach of shame and weird embarrassment, all sorts of other emotions.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And to be honest, I can't exactly tell you why it happens.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: We could sit here all day and hypothesize why does Flint feel like shit a weekend do every new year?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter why.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: All that matters is that I am capable of handling it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And the way of overcoming these emotions is by using a holistic approach that uses your core values to identify alignment as well as preventative, in the moment, and reflective ways of collecting data from those misalignments and then using them to prepare for and act more proudly going forward when you hit similar situations.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And it's pretty simple, though, not necessarily easy.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: If you're interested, feel free to reach out with the word alignment.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I'm happy to talk you through it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: A funny thing that occurs, though, as you move through the levels of being able to handle these moments is that you recognize that the moments themselves and the emotions mostly never actually go away.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Not to speak it into existence, but there's a pretty high chance that if I felt this way around the same time almost every year of my life, there's a pretty good chance that it will happen again in my upcoming years.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: It may not, but it also may.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And that's not a bad thing.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It just warrants me separating the fact that I may feel bad, but just because that happens, it doesn't mean that I have lost all the effort that I have put into myself up until that point.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I handle these emotions significantly better to the point where they don't affect the actual actions that I'm taking.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And this will happen consistently until you actually start to crave the lows.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Not in a masochistic way, necessarily, but as tests of where you're currently at.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: For example, I had a couple days this holiday season where I felt like I could have handled those emotions a bit better, specifically by saying, one, yes to fewer things, and two, having organized certain physical structures before traveling, such as where I would work out, shop for food, go to the gym, etc.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Knowing these two things and implementing them can reserve more bandwidth for me to adjust for anything that might pop up spontaneously in the new year.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So instead of resenting the holidays because, oh, there's gonna be this time where I'm gonna feel like shit or something like that, I can look forward to implementing these adjustments next holiday season and then seeing how well I can handle whatever may show up.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And this works on long-term horizons, like this.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about holiday season next year, but also on a day-by-day basis.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: When you look at, oh, I scrolled my phone this morning when I got out of bed and then I felt this way, and then I didn't adjust for that, and then my whole day was shut.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I was like, Well, what about tomorrow?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: What does tomorrow look like?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And if you go through tomorrow and the same thing happens, all right, well, now we've identified a pattern.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: How can we positively reinforce ourselves to change this pattern?
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: But by doing this, the thing that is providing me with pain actually becomes a source of opportunity and power, even though the actual emotions, like embarrassment is still present, but the way I handle embarrassment, the way I act afterwards is different, right?
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: So it becomes a source of opportunity and power, even though the actual emotions don't necessarily change.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Which leads to a pretty interesting observation, which is that the people that you most admire in this life for their discipline and their diligence probably also feel the exact same anxiety and embarrassment that you do.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: It just affects them less because they are more capable of handling it, reframing it, continuing to take action regardless of, or even because of it.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: They are made of the same flesh and blood that you are, just as I am, just as everyone else on this planet.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: We all feel intense emotions sometimes, but some of us are better than others at moving through them and continuing to take action regardless of them.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed that episode.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've been told your entire life that you're smart and you have potential, but you continue to see yourself not do what you said you would do again and again, and it's made you stop trusting in yourself or that you will ever achieve that potential, I want to help you.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Together, you and I will implement a core value-based system that will help you become decisive and focused.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I want you to feel the relief from the weight on your shoulders because of the decreased noise in your head.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Strength each morning because you trust yourself to turn lost avoidant hours of your life into forward progress.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Peace when you no longer have to hide how you actually spend your time.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And finally, pride in yourself when you close your eyes every night before you go to sleep.
