- 0:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Welcome back to Reset Recharge.
- 0:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Komal Patil-Sisodia, and I am excited to introduce today's guest, Sarah Centrella, who is a bestselling author, master Life and Executive Coach and creator of the Centrella Method, she helps people in teams worldwide transform their mindset and manifest their goals, and I think that this is such an important topic for women who are in midlife.
- 1:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because we are going through all of these changes and evolutions and sometimes in addition to figuring out, what exactly is going on physiologically with our bodies, we have to do a lot of work on our mindset and acceptance to try and shift that.
- 1:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: She is also the founder of VIVIAMO, the host of the Sarah Centrella Show, and her work has been featured in major outlets like Good Morning America, in The New York Times.
- 1:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So welcome Sarah.
- 1:44Sarah Centrella: Thanks.
- 1:44Sarah Centrella: I'm so excited to be here.
- 1:46Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: For our listeners, I was lucky to meet Sarah.
- 1:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I had no idea what a badass she was when we were at a mutual friend's wedding and we were just sitting poolside and talking about life, and we just kind of really gelled and connected.
- 1:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And then I got home from Mexico and I was like, looking at your social, and I was like.
- 2:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Oh my God.
- 2:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I had no idea who I was sitting next to the whole time I was there so I'm really excited to have you here today.
- 2:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Could you tell the listeners a little bit about what you do and how you got to this point in your journey?
- 2:19Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 2:20Sarah Centrella: As a life coach, first and foremost, Komal the feeling is so mutual.
- 2:23Sarah Centrella: I think like we instantly had a connection.
- 2:26Sarah Centrella: I had just gone through.
- 2:27Sarah Centrella: A horrible tragedy the day before.
- 2:29Sarah Centrella: I just lost my brother, shockingly, and it was, you have this beautiful presence just that you exude that is warm and is open and I was going through all this stuff and you know, you're not trying to have that be a thing at a this great destination wedding.
- 2:43Sarah Centrella: But your warmth and your just spirit allowed me to connect with you immediately.
- 2:49Sarah Centrella: Open up to you, share that with you.
- 2:51Sarah Centrella: You're the only person that I told for about a week of what had happened.
- 2:54Sarah Centrella: So I'm just, I'm honored to like.
- 2:57Sarah Centrella: Be here to know you to be building this, friendship that we have.
- 3:02Sarah Centrella: Thanks for having me here.
- 3:03Sarah Centrella: I can't like this conversation.
- 3:04Sarah Centrella: I'm gonna try really hard to keep you to an hour because
- 3:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I know, right?
- 3:08Sarah Centrella: So all day.
- 3:09Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 3:09Sarah Centrella: So my gosh, how I started life coaching, it's very, very crazy story because never in a million years did I ever think that's what I was going to do.
- 3:20Sarah Centrella: My.
- 3:21Sarah Centrella: Pivotal story started in 2008.
- 3:24Sarah Centrella: At the time I was married to my high school sweetheart, we had three little babies.
- 3:28Sarah Centrella: We had twins that were a year and a half.
- 3:29Sarah Centrella: Our son was five.
- 3:31Sarah Centrella: And one day he came home from work and went in the shower.
- 3:35Sarah Centrella: And I had been watching the Oprah show that day, and they were talking about cheating spouses and how to know if your spouse is cheating.
- 3:40Sarah Centrella: And I was like, I don't need that shit.
- 3:42Sarah Centrella: Like, I can mute it, I can watch Rosie instead or something, yeah.
- 3:46Sarah Centrella: And then all of a sudden he's in the shower and I'm like, but I haven't seen his phone in a really long time.
- 3:51Sarah Centrella: And that just wasn't us.
- 3:52Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 3:53Sarah Centrella: That wasn't our dynamic.
- 3:54Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 3:54Sarah Centrella: And it was like the second I had that thought, I knew everything, like start to finish.
- 3:57Sarah Centrella: It just, it's like a little mental reader board.
- 3:59Sarah Centrella: It was like, here's what's going on, here's who it's with, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 4:03Sarah Centrella: And anyway, I go in and find his phone and sure enough there's.
- 4:07Sarah Centrella: The first message, he hadn't even seen it yet was from his mistress.
- 4:11Sarah Centrella: And I was like, I can't wait till you're finally free.
- 4:13Sarah Centrella: All mine, no more sharing.
- 4:16Sarah Centrella: And I was like, kids, I'm gonna put a movie on real quick in the back of the house.
- 4:23Sarah Centrella: And I went in, turned the water off in the shower, so like, get the fuck out.
- 4:26Sarah Centrella: And that was.
- 4:27Sarah Centrella: The end, it just blew up Everything I'd known about my life.
- 4:31Sarah Centrella: We'd been together since we were 16.
- 4:34Sarah Centrella: And it also came at the worst possible time.
- 4:37Sarah Centrella: This was right at the bubble.
- 4:39Sarah Centrella: So we had lost our house the year before.
- 4:42Sarah Centrella: I've been a stay at home mom.
- 4:44Sarah Centrella: We were just barely scraping by as it was.
- 4:47Sarah Centrella: And then that night as kind of everything just was hitting me, I started realizing like, oh my God, I don't.
- 4:52Sarah Centrella: Have a bank account anymore in my own name, like the car is in his name.
- 4:56Sarah Centrella: Like how did it get to this?
- 4:59Sarah Centrella: Right, and I just, I remember like laying on the floor just sobbing, thinking like, I can't do this.
- 5:05Sarah Centrella: This is back before social media, so I didn't know one person who'd been divorced.
- 5:08Sarah Centrella: I know that sounds crazy, but.
- 5:10Sarah Centrella: My friends were at the stages where they were just starting to get married, you know, so like, I didn't know a single person who'd been through divorce, no one who had ever publicly been through infidelity like this.
- 5:19Sarah Centrella: So I truly felt like I was the first person on the planet to ever go through something like this.
- 5:24Sarah Centrella: And I just had this overwhelming sense of, I can't, I can't, I can't do it.
- 5:28Sarah Centrella: And in that like really, really dark space, there was this alternate, whatever you wanna say, intuition, voice guide, whatever.
- 5:37Sarah Centrella: And it was just like, well.
- 5:38Sarah Centrella: What if you can, you know, and that was kind of the start of everything for me, because I think I just needed that lifeline so bad that I clung to it.
- 5:46Sarah Centrella: And I was like, well, if I could figure this out, if I could pick myself back up, what would I do?
- 5:51Sarah Centrella: And I started just, once I realized I had to kind of rebuild a life from scratch, I was like, well, why don't I rebuild a better one?
- 6:00Sarah Centrella: You know, like, and so I just started like fantasize dreaming.
- 6:03Sarah Centrella: I was like, well, if I had a better life, what would it look like?
- 6:06Sarah Centrella: And I just started flushing it out in all these ways I'd be successful.
- 6:09Sarah Centrella: Okay, well what does success look like?
- 6:11Sarah Centrella: That woman, who is she?
- 6:13Sarah Centrella: Um, if I'm a good single mom, figuring that all out.
- 6:16Sarah Centrella: What does she look like?
- 6:17Sarah Centrella: What does she do?
- 6:17Sarah Centrella: How does she show up?
- 6:19Sarah Centrella: And then I kind of just went through all the categories.
- 6:21Sarah Centrella: And when I finally, finally got a job, I.
- 6:24Sarah Centrella: Decided to put pictures that represented all that stuff that I was kind of daydreaming about in my cube, and they made me happy.
- 6:30Sarah Centrella: And I looked at'em for about a year and then it just all started like happening.
- 6:36Sarah Centrella: Like literally those pictures and that like mental movie that I was creating in my head just started becoming my real life.
- 6:44Sarah Centrella: And it was the craziest trippiest thing.
- 6:48Sarah Centrella: And I just thought, how is this happening?
- 6:50Sarah Centrella: What did I do?
- 6:51Sarah Centrella: How can I make it happen more and more and more?
- 6:53Sarah Centrella: Because this is pretty great.
- 6:54Sarah Centrella: It's a whole lot better than before.
- 6:55Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 6:56Sarah Centrella: And that just started everything.
- 6:57Sarah Centrella: And it started with a blog with me just getting on, just sharing that journey and it's turned into four books and now a full-time career.
- 7:04Sarah Centrella: And I've been doing it full-time for eight years.
- 7:07Sarah Centrella: But yeah, it, it definitely called to me, it was not something I ever in million years thought I was going to leave a corporate job to do.
- 7:15Sarah Centrella: But I'm really glad I did.
- 7:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love this story for so many reasons, obviously not the origin of it.
- 7:20Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 7:20Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because that was rooted in probably the most horrific trauma that anybody can go through when they're navigating a relationship and trying to build a family.
- 7:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But the fact that you were able to, in the darkest moments in your life, start with changing your thoughts and changing your mindset and knowing that there was.
- 7:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You didn't know what it was, but you knew that there was a way out of it and you were going to put your energy towards doing that.
- 7:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 7:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I think for a lot of my patients who are going through these body changes where they are, you know, going and they feel like they're being gaslit by their medical professionals.
- 7:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 7:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Or nobody has answers and they don't know how to go out and find that information.
- 8:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Just the thought of changing their mindset and getting to a more positive place, and then being able to go out and seek that help that they're looking for is just such a compelling story.
- 8:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I love that you've managed to take this very dark time in your life and turn it into an abundance of blessings.
- 8:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: What are the titles of the four books you've written so far?
- 8:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I know you have another one coming and I have that one ordered.
- 8:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Ordered on Amazon as well.
- 8:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yay.
- 8:29Sarah Centrella: Thank you.
- 8:29Sarah Centrella: Yeah, so my very first book is called Hustle Believe, receive, and that was really kind of based off my blog journey.
- 8:36Sarah Centrella: I just started getting on sharing, you know, as a single mom, I felt like I didn't, I didn't have any community.
- 8:42Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 8:42Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I didn't really
- 8:43Sarah Centrella: have anyone to talk to about all these things I was going through, and so I just went on and blogged and people started.
- 8:49Sarah Centrella: Kind of following along what I was doing and asking, Hey, how can I do it too?
- 8:52Sarah Centrella: 'cause it's obviously working for you.
- 8:54Sarah Centrella: And that was probably five years and that grew and grew and grew.
- 8:58Sarah Centrella: And then I was like, you know what?
- 8:59Sarah Centrella: I can't answer everyone's individual question all the time.
- 9:02Sarah Centrella: Why don't I write a book?
- 9:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 9:04Sarah Centrella: Put it all together.
- 9:05Sarah Centrella: There we go.
- 9:06Sarah Centrella: And then, that one has done really well.
- 9:08Sarah Centrella: We've re-released it twice, sold out both of its, printings.
- 9:11Sarah Centrella: And then the second one is future boards, and that's all about like how I manifested, so from the manifesting side.
- 9:16Sarah Centrella: Yeah, my future boards.
- 9:18Sarah Centrella: And then the next one is all the things I wish I knew.
- 9:21Sarah Centrella: 80 life lessons for women.
- 9:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 9:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So just
- 9:24Sarah Centrella: a tiny bit of things I needed to know.
- 9:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, a
- 9:27Sarah Centrella: little bit.
- 9:27Sarah Centrella: A little bit.
- 9:28Sarah Centrella: Um, I had 120 and my editor was like.
- 9:31Sarah Centrella: You know, I, not a little too much.
- 9:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Let's not get into three digits, right scale.
- 9:39Sarah Centrella: We can scale it to 80.
- 9:40Sarah Centrella: And then the one that is coming out in January is called Think It and it's all mindset.
- 9:44Sarah Centrella: So definitely, I know what we wanna get into today.
- 9:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 9:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'm excited to dive into, figure out like how you have tapped into that.
- 9:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I think I had shared with you before that about 10 years ago, we went through a really traumatic event where my husband had a heart attack and I had to go through that journey of finding it.
- 10:06Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Unlike you was not able to self start and do that.
- 10:09Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I felt myself in just like this dark, deep hole.
- 10:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 10:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But I had the blessing to find somebody who was a life coach.
- 10:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Similar to what you did.
- 10:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 10:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Who really helped me get myself out of a very dark time and start making forward progress.
- 10:22Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But I would love to hear your method around that.
- 10:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: 'cause I think there's some core.
- 10:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Around coaching and self coaching that you learn.
- 10:29Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'm interested in hearing your, or sharing your method.
- 10:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 10:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because you and I talked about this and I, I love the different things that you have pulled in and especially your thoughts around like, mind getting your mind at body.
- 10:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 10:42Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I think we talked a little bit about finding your passion and your joy.
- 10:46Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So Yeah.
- 10:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You know, the floor is yours.
- 10:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Tell us.
- 10:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Absolutely.
- 10:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Tell us how to make the magic happen.
- 10:52Sarah Centrella: Well, you brought up a really good point in.
- 10:54Sarah Centrella: Women who are going through pre menopause or menopause, we'd have all these changes going on in our life, not just in our body, but like.
- 11:01Sarah Centrella: Most likely in career at that same time, maybe you're going through empty nester for the first time.
- 11:06Sarah Centrella: So it's like a massive life change and, and I'm right there.
- 11:10Sarah Centrella: I just turned 50 and just kind of became an empty nester.
- 11:13Sarah Centrella: So if all those are like right here, going through all of those changes, and I think it's really easy and life in general to be very, very focused on what's going on today.
- 11:24Sarah Centrella: And when we're talking from a mindset perspective, that's actually a pretty dangerous mind spiral to be in.
- 11:31Sarah Centrella: Because if you think about the base law of attraction, if you will, whether you believe it or not, it's been proven for centuries.
- 11:39Sarah Centrella: Which is just the idea that what I focus on, I bring to me so.
- 11:43Sarah Centrella: If what I'm focusing on is that my body feels terrible, that I feel terrible, that I have no energy, that everything is going wrong in my life, or that I'm not feeling great, or whatever the case is, and I'm doing that day after day because 90% of our thoughts are repetitive from yesterday to today.
- 12:01Sarah Centrella: So if you think about that, we have about 70 to 80,000 thoughts a day.
- 12:05Sarah Centrella: Wow.
- 12:06Sarah Centrella: 90% of them are just on auto repeat really.
- 12:10Sarah Centrella: So break out of that cycle.
- 12:12Sarah Centrella: And start thinking something brand new.
- 12:15Sarah Centrella: You can see it takes a lot of effort, right?
- 12:16Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 12:16Sarah Centrella: Because it's much easier to just wake up today, the way I woke up two months ago, five years ago.
- 12:21Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 12:21Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 12:22Sarah Centrella: So if I'm not actively changing those thoughts, then all I'm doing is recreating today over and over and over and over in, into Infinity, and I'm waiting for a big life event or some miracle to shock me out of that.
- 12:39Sarah Centrella: Rotation.
- 12:40Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 12:40Sarah Centrella: Most people are in that spot.
- 12:42Sarah Centrella: They're just waiting for something good to happen, to hopefully shock'em out of it and, and maybe they'll feel better for a little while, but they'll go right back to the.
- 12:49Sarah Centrella: Same recycle unless they have a plan to get out of it and stay out of it.
- 12:53Sarah Centrella: And so what I do is I teach people how to train their thoughts to align with what they want rather than focusing on all these things I don't like.
- 13:02Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 13:02Sarah Centrella: So, and it starts very, very simple.
- 13:04Sarah Centrella: I share two of the simplest tools on the planet.
- 13:07Sarah Centrella: Um, they're so simple that I think a lot of people discount them and they're like, uh, that can't possibly work.
- 13:12Sarah Centrella: But I, I deeply challenge you to try it.
- 13:15Sarah Centrella: And if you try it for 30 days, you're gonna be shocked at the transformation that you are making, both in your own mental health, in your energy.
- 13:23Sarah Centrella: And then the longer you stick with it, the faster tangible results start coming in behind it.
- 13:29Sarah Centrella: So the first one is in a moment where you're kind of catching yourself obsessing over the things that aren't working.
- 13:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 13:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You
- 13:37Sarah Centrella: know, my body feels crappy, I don't have any energy, whatever.
- 13:40Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 13:40Sarah Centrella: As soon as I kind of notice that thought, which in itself takes a a little awareness, takes a little practice to even pay attention to what's going on in my head.
- 13:47Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 13:48Sarah Centrella: But once I do, then use this tool, plug this tool in, I call it mental tennis and real quick I'll just walk you through it.
- 13:54Sarah Centrella: 'cause the visual helps.
- 13:55Sarah Centrella: You never forget it.
- 13:56Sarah Centrella: Okay.
- 13:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 13:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So,
- 13:58Sarah Centrella: If you imagine that you're like out on a tennis court.
- 14:01Sarah Centrella: And you're practicing your return serve and you're doing it with one of those like automatic ball launchers, right?
- 14:07Sarah Centrella: Mm-hmm.
- 14:07Sarah Centrella: So you're standing there and no one in their right mind is just gonna stand there and let every ball hit them all over.
- 14:13Sarah Centrella: That's true.
- 14:14Sarah Centrella: Their body, right?
- 14:15Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 14:16Sarah Centrella: Make some sort of effort to get out there and return some serves.
- 14:19Sarah Centrella: They're not gonna be perfect.
- 14:21Sarah Centrella: You know, a bunch of'em are gonna go out.
- 14:22Sarah Centrella: Some won't go over the net.
- 14:23Sarah Centrella: But my goal is to try and get them back over the net, right?
- 14:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 14:26Sarah Centrella: So if we think of our mind or our brain as that tennis court all day long, those 90,000 thoughts that are on auto repeat are coming at us like fastballs just hit, hit, hit, hit, hit, and most people have no idea what to do with that information.
- 14:44Sarah Centrella: And so they absorb it.
- 14:45Sarah Centrella: And they believe that to be true, right?
- 14:48Sarah Centrella: So this self-doubt, this limiting belief, this, I can never change how I feel.
- 14:53Sarah Centrella: This is just how it is.
- 14:55Sarah Centrella: Like whatever those thoughts might be.
- 14:57Sarah Centrella: Thoughts of self-sabotage, imposter syndrome, whatever.
- 15:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 15:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So
- 15:01Sarah Centrella: they're coming at us all the time and we analyze'em and be like, yeah, you know what?
- 15:05Sarah Centrella: You're right.
- 15:06Sarah Centrella: I'm not ready for that.
- 15:07Sarah Centrella: Or you're right, other people are way better at that.
- 15:09Sarah Centrella: I should just wait to do that, right?
- 15:10Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 15:11Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 15:11Sarah Centrella: So they really become our truth very, very quickly because we're absorbing every, we're just standing there getting hit.
- 15:17Sarah Centrella: We're just absorbing, right?
- 15:19Sarah Centrella: But now I just want you to return the serve.
- 15:23Sarah Centrella: And what I mean by that is all you have to do is think what's the opposite of this thought?
- 15:28Sarah Centrella: So if my thought is I'm not good enough.
- 15:30Sarah Centrella: Then I just go, I'm good enough.
- 15:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 15:32Sarah Centrella: Or I'm not ready.
- 15:34Sarah Centrella: I'm ready.
- 15:34Sarah Centrella: I'm getting better every day, or I can't do this.
- 15:37Sarah Centrella: I can do this.
- 15:38Sarah Centrella: It's very, very simple.
- 15:40Sarah Centrella: It's just the opposites you, but what you're doing is two very important things.
- 15:44Sarah Centrella: One, you're stopping the negative from continuing to grow, roots, recycle and create outcomes.
- 15:51Sarah Centrella: Number two, for the very first time ever, you're giving a brand new option.
- 15:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that,
- 15:56Sarah Centrella: right?
- 15:57Sarah Centrella: That option wasn't there before.
- 15:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:59Sarah Centrella: Option of, I can had never grown roots to like help you figure out how you could do it, because if you shut down, it was never even put out there in the first place.
- 16:09Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 16:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I feel like for women, we are almost conditioned to accept, right?
- 16:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I, except whatever it is we're taught at from a younger age that.
- 16:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You take care of everybody else.
- 16:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 16:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Before yourself.
- 16:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 16:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So with that type of societal conditioning or cultural conditioning or whatever you it is, you wanna call it, how many women just stand there and take those tennis balls coming to them?
- 16:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 16:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So this is an empowering thought that you don't No, I don't.
- 16:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I don't have to
- 16:38Sarah Centrella: take it.
- 16:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, I got a tennis racket in my hands.
- 16:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like I'm, I don't, I'm the least athletic person I know, but this is driving with me because I'm like
- 16:46Sarah Centrella: one or two balls out there.
- 16:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 16:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: At the worst case scenario, I can hold it in front of my face and it's not gonna like, hit me in the face.
- 16:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 16:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But, you know, it, it, it gives you the option of protecting yourself in a way that power.
- 16:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 16:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 16:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And, and in a way that was maybe not taught to us or at all, accepted at that, uh, you know, at the time that we were growing up is that you don't have to take that.
- 17:09Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You don't have to
- 17:12Sarah Centrella: accept it.
- 17:12Sarah Centrella: Accept it's not true.
- 17:13Sarah Centrella: Negatives not, yeah, it's not true truly.
- 17:16Sarah Centrella: But most people don't even understand that statement.
- 17:19Sarah Centrella: So if everyone listening can just ruminate on that, like, what if I'm not my thoughts?
- 17:23Sarah Centrella: What if everything my brain is telling me about who I am is actually just made up bullshit.
- 17:29Sarah Centrella: Like, what if that was true?
- 17:30Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 17:30Sarah Centrella: Okay.
- 17:31Sarah Centrella: Well then which ones do I not want anymore?
- 17:34Sarah Centrella: You know, and, and the crazy thing about when you're using mental tennis is that in the moment you immediately feel better.
- 17:39Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 17:40Sarah Centrella: Because what happens when I ruminate on the thought that I'm not good enough, or I'm not ready, or I feel terrible or whatever, my body starts to ugh.
- 17:50Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 17:50Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 17:50Sarah Centrella: I start to physically feel.
- 17:53Sarah Centrella: Just yucky.
- 17:54Sarah Centrella: I might get a stomach ache, I might get a headache, I might have other signs of stress.
- 17:59Sarah Centrella: And as soon as I stop that and put the empowering opposite in, all of a sudden I'm like, oh, oh, I feel a little better.
- 18:05Sarah Centrella: So if you want an instant fricking fix, that is an instant way to change your energy in the moment.
- 18:11Sarah Centrella: And it doesn't matter what the subject matter is, the subject matter could be like.
- 18:15Sarah Centrella: My partner is annoying.
- 18:16Sarah Centrella: You know, like my kids are annoying.
- 18:18Sarah Centrella: Like it doesn't matter.
- 18:19Sarah Centrella: You can flip it and be like, Hey, I'm so grateful, you know, that I get to smoke with my kids.
- 18:24Sarah Centrella: My kid's pretty funny actually, you know?
- 18:26Sarah Centrella: So how can I like turn it around and start thinking, putting the opposites out there so I can start to get it.
- 18:31Sarah Centrella: And then the other one, is even simpler.
- 18:34Sarah Centrella: And those are just, IM affirmations.
- 18:37Sarah Centrella: So we use these two tools in two different ways.
- 18:41Sarah Centrella: Mental tennis, you're using it in the moment.
- 18:43Sarah Centrella: You know when you're getting inundated with those balls, you're flipping it back around, but affirmations you can use proactively.
- 18:49Sarah Centrella: And you just use them in the same way you do any other practice.
- 18:53Sarah Centrella: If you take your vitamins every morning, if you brush your teeth every day, if you go to the gym every day, you know that those are habits and they're practices and you just do them, right?
- 19:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 19:02Sarah Centrella: So if you could plug in saying 10 to 20 positive, IM affirmations.
- 19:09Sarah Centrella: Every morning when you brush your teeth and every night before you go to bed, you will become a different human.
- 19:16Sarah Centrella: In 30 days.
- 19:17Sarah Centrella: Like it's,
- 19:18Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 19:18Sarah Centrella: Crazy.
- 19:19Sarah Centrella: It is so crazy.
- 19:20Sarah Centrella: So I think of it as my list of who I am becoming.
- 19:25Sarah Centrella: So they should always be, aspirational.
- 19:28Sarah Centrella: Mm-hmm.
- 19:28Sarah Centrella: So in other words, you shouldn't say, I'm a good mom unless you really, truly believe you're a terrible mom.
- 19:33Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 19:33Sarah Centrella: Then we'd say that.
- 19:34Sarah Centrella: 'cause we wanna become that, right?
- 19:36Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 19:36Sarah Centrella: You're putting out there all the things you wish you were, so all the things like you wish you felt.
- 19:42Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 19:42Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: The
- 19:42Sarah Centrella: ways you wish people treated you.
- 19:44Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 19:44Sarah Centrella: All the ways you wanna show up, um, how you wish your world was.
- 19:49Sarah Centrella: So you're saying things like, I am beautiful, I am healthy, I'm vibrant, I'm full of energy.
- 19:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 19:55Sarah Centrella: I'm successful.
- 19:57Sarah Centrella: I am getting stronger and better every day.
- 19:59Sarah Centrella: People love me.
- 20:00Sarah Centrella: I am loved.
- 20:02Sarah Centrella: I make friends easily.
- 20:02Sarah Centrella: So whatever your things are, we're putting out.
- 20:07Sarah Centrella: The empowering opposite of all your kind of internal demons, and we all have them.
- 20:11Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 20:11Sarah Centrella: So if you just did that as a practice, every single day, you're gonna notice week one, you're gonna start to feel a lot better.
- 20:18Sarah Centrella: Just your energy's gonna rise because you're no longer beating yourself down.
- 20:22Sarah Centrella: You're lifting yourself up, right?
- 20:23Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 20:23Sarah Centrella: Week two, even better.
- 20:25Sarah Centrella: But then this magical thing will start to happen in week three, where you hear both the voices.
- 20:31Sarah Centrella: The one that's like, you're terrible and now this new one that's like, no, you're strong.
- 20:36Sarah Centrella: You're ready.
- 20:37Sarah Centrella: You got this.
- 20:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 20:38Sarah Centrella: And now for the first time ever, you make a choice.
- 20:41Sarah Centrella: You say, which lane am I gonna take?
- 20:43Sarah Centrella: Am I gonna go back around in this cul-de-sac that I've been in for years and years and years?
- 20:47Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 20:48Sarah Centrella: Or am I gonna get off it and go with that new empowered statement and show up as that person?
- 20:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 20:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It
- 20:54Sarah Centrella: actually changes.
- 20:55Sarah Centrella: How you make decisions, which of course will change your outcome.
- 20:58Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 20:59Sarah Centrella: So it is the fastest and simplest way to get new outcomes in any area of your life.
- 21:04Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 21:04Sarah Centrella: And it's like five minutes a day.
- 21:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It sounds so simple.
- 21:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: What do you find are like the biggest barriers that your clients will come up against when they're first trying to implement those changes?
- 21:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Is it just the strength of the negative voice?
- 21:18Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 21:18Sarah Centrella: So I would say when you're very, when you very first start doing any of this mindset work, our number one, we, the one place that we start with is called mental inventory.
- 21:28Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 21:28Sarah Centrella: And I have a little practice where, you know, if you have a smartwatch or phone or whatever, you set it to you once an hour and in that, you know, five seconds, you're asking yourself, what was I thinking about this hour?
- 21:41Sarah Centrella: Just so you can learn how to track what's going on of mind, right?
- 21:45Sarah Centrella: What are those 70,000 thoughts that I'm having a day?
- 21:48Sarah Centrella: That process can be a lot.
- 21:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 21:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: 'cause
- 21:51Sarah Centrella: for many people it is a first time in their whole life where they realized, oh my god.
- 21:56Sarah Centrella: I had no idea how mean I was to myself.
- 21:59Sarah Centrella: I had no idea how often I obsessed about really horrible things.
- 22:03Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 22:04Sarah Centrella: I had no idea that like I was putting all of this really negative energy out into the world and into my life, you know?
- 22:11Sarah Centrella: So like, I would say that part, uh, I had a client once refer to it as mental warfare and I was like, that's accurate.
- 22:18Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 22:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 22:19Sarah Centrella: So that first week when you're practicing it can be a lot because soon as you start to understand this concept.
- 22:26Sarah Centrella: And you understand that what I think becomes what I do becomes my reality.
- 22:33Sarah Centrella: Then it's, it's kind of hard not to look back over your life and be like, wow.
- 22:37Sarah Centrella: Why did you jack that up?
- 22:40Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'll share that.
- 22:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: When I first started going through this, it was funny because, being the oldest daughter in an immigrant family and, having all.
- 22:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Cultural expectations and my parents compared to a lot of other immigrant parents were pretty chill.
- 22:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like they were pretty free with me and my sisters.
- 22:56Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I, I credit that to the fact that we grew up like mostly well adjusted, right?
- 23:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 23:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like we, we all have our little idea of ressies, but it's so interesting the amount of pressure that you put on yourself, right?
- 23:06Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 23:06Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Or what you shut down.
- 23:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 23:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And for me it was.
- 23:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That I had learned to like chess checklist things, and I was not being introspective about what it was that I really wanted.
- 23:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 23:18Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it wasn't until my husband went through his heart attack that he was the first one to point it out to me.
- 23:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: He's like, dude, you're living your life like an ostrich, like you're in the sand.
- 23:29Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And you know, like you're just so focused on your list.
- 23:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You're not realizing that like.
- 23:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Things that you should be taking care of for yourself or like falling apart and exploding.
- 23:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 23:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 23:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 23:40Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it was such an interesting thing that I just like learned to turn it off so that I could get through my list.
- 23:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: The list, yeah.
- 23:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because the list was the right thing to do.
- 23:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 23:50Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Or at least that's where the thoughts were coming from.
- 23:52Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 23:52Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And when I learned to let go of the, well, maybe I don't have to do what's on that list.
- 23:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 23:59Sarah Centrella: Maybe I could try to be present even for five minutes or 10 minutes, or.
- 24:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Exactly right.
- 24:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And like it changed my life.
- 24:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So I love this idea of empowering women to take charge of their thoughts mm-hmm.
- 24:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And as they're making those changes and manifesting those changes for themselves, what are some other things that you see come up for women?
- 24:18Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because the process is never linear for anything we do.
- 24:22Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's always gonna be starts and stops, peaks and valleys until you, but I do believe that you can still continue to have progress in whatever direction you wanna go.
- 24:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 24:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Oh,
- 24:31Sarah Centrella: abs ab up, down,
- 24:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: sideways.
- 24:33Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah,
- 24:33Sarah Centrella: absolutely.
- 24:33Sarah Centrella: I think one of the things that I see, is when women tend to hit like 40 and on, they have this idea or this notion that I guess I'm done.
- 24:44Sarah Centrella: You know, I guess like all the opportunities that I was supposed to chase, all the things I was supposed to do, wanted to do, I guess that's over, you know?
- 24:51Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 24:51Sarah Centrella: And I don't know where that comes from.
- 24:53Sarah Centrella: I mean, me media, I guess, whatever, but.
- 24:56Sarah Centrella: Nothing could be more insane.
- 24:58Sarah Centrella: Like nothing could be more insane than that.
- 25:00Sarah Centrella: Like that's crazy talk.
- 25:01Sarah Centrella: Yeah, I think, the person that I am now at 50 is, oh my god, such a better human than I was at 30.
- 25:09Sarah Centrella: You know, even then I was at 40.
- 25:11Sarah Centrella: Like, it's so true.
- 25:13Sarah Centrella: What they say that like not only do you grow in all these other ways, and yes our body changes and there's a lot of it that's frustrating, but you also.
- 25:21Sarah Centrella: Get this sense of, you know who you are.
- 25:24Sarah Centrella: Yes.
- 25:25Sarah Centrella: You know, you stop caring about what everybody else thinks.
- 25:27Sarah Centrella: You stop the judgment game, you stop kind of all of that, and you come into your own.
- 25:32Sarah Centrella: And that is such a beautiful thing.
- 25:34Sarah Centrella: And I think especially, at least for me, I intentionally guide that with doing things like my I am statements, and so I use those all the time to make sure that I am always growing, that I am always kind of morphing into who I am becoming.
- 25:48Sarah Centrella: So they don't like stagnant out and get to that place where life feels me.
- 25:53Sarah Centrella: Like I always want to be growing, to be pushing myself to find a piece of my life that I'm like, Hey, you know, I could up level here, I could push here.
- 26:03Sarah Centrella: If I'm bored here, what do I need to do to shake that up?
- 26:05Sarah Centrella: Or to totally pivot or to drop it and start something new yeah.
- 26:09Sarah Centrella: You know, and so all of those things I think we're really afraid to do.
- 26:12Sarah Centrella: Maybe in our thirties or twenties or whatever.
- 26:14Sarah Centrella: But I think there's a lot of freedom that comes, with just knowing like, Hey, this is my life.
- 26:20Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 26:20Sarah Centrella: I'm gonna get the absolute best that I can.
- 26:23Sarah Centrella: And I think once you learn how to align your mindset with some of those goals,
- 26:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: yeah, you
- 26:27Sarah Centrella: feel really, truly unstoppable.
- 26:29Sarah Centrella: Like most of the time our mindset is sabotaging everything we're actually doing.
- 26:33Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 26:34Sarah Centrella: Because the whole time we're doing the thing.
- 26:36Sarah Centrella: Putting in the hustle, putting in the work, showing up, whatever our mindset is saying, the opposite of all that is true.
- 26:44Sarah Centrella: So it's telling us, this isn't gonna work, this isn't gonna succeed.
- 26:48Sarah Centrella: You're too old, you're too this, you're too that.
- 26:50Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 26:51Sarah Centrella: And if I don't know how to shut that shit down.
- 26:53Sarah Centrella: Change it.
- 26:54Sarah Centrella: To be like, you are ready for this.
- 26:56Sarah Centrella: You're on fire.
- 26:57Sarah Centrella: The world needs to hear what you have to say like.
- 27:00Sarah Centrella: Y today's the day, let's go.
- 27:03Sarah Centrella: If I'm not putting those two things together, I'm never gonna get where I wanna go.
- 27:06Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 27:06Sarah Centrella: I'm just be fighting myself the whole entire time.
- 27:09Sarah Centrella: So it's such a powerful thing.
- 27:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It really is.
- 27:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I'll say that with working on all of these things, I am a much, like you said, you feel like you're a much better human at 50.
- 27:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I feel like I am a much kinder person to myself mm-hmm.
- 27:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: At, right.
- 27:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 27:25Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: How I was treating myself in my twenties and thirties is so different than how I'm treating myself in my forties.
- 27:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it is a very empowering feeling.
- 27:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 27:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it's hard to balance right when you physiologically start feeling crappy, but to your point, like if you're able to harness that power in your mind, you can then go out and make changes, right?
- 27:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 27:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And part of that includes building a life that you want, but then also seeking the help for whatever else might be going on in your absolutely.
- 27:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: In your life that you would ignore and otherwise shut down.
- 27:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I always wondered where that.
- 28:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: At least when I was a kid, I don't know if you saw this like, but my parents' friends would give each other these cards at like when they turned 40.
- 28:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 28:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Go over the hill.
- 28:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Over the hill.
- 28:09Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You're over the hill.
- 28:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 28:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's all, everything
- 28:11Sarah Centrella: back.
- 28:11Sarah Centrella: Like this is the morning.
- 28:12Sarah Centrella: I'm freaking happy to be here.
- 28:14Sarah Centrella: Thank you very much.
- 28:15Sarah Centrella: Yes,
- 28:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: yes.
- 28:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's not like we're like one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel at 40.
- 28:20Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 28:20Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: No, really.
- 28:22Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I had a mentor who used to say, who used to say that for like people who were close to making their transition to the afterlife.
- 28:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I don't feel like it has to feel like that in your forties.
- 28:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 28:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it's such a beautiful time of like mental and emotional growth.
- 28:36Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That we need to be grabbing towards that instead of shying away from it.
- 28:40Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 28:41Sarah Centrella: And such a simple tie in is if I am dreading those milestones, right?
- 28:46Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 28:47Sarah Centrella: If I'm like, oh my God, I don't wanna be 50, I'm about to be old, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 28:51Sarah Centrella: Or if I'm telling myself every day kind, I feel old.
- 28:53Sarah Centrella: Oh, I'm looking old.
- 28:54Sarah Centrella: I'm getting this, I'm getting that.
- 28:55Sarah Centrella: Whatever.
- 28:55Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 28:55Sarah Centrella: I mean, we all do that, but if that's where my focus is all the time,
- 28:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: yeah.
- 29:00Sarah Centrella: Then I will feel old and I will prematurely age, and I will also.
- 29:05Sarah Centrella: Not be taking care of myself.
- 29:07Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 29:07Sarah Centrella: The way that I would if I felt that I was youthful and beautiful.
- 29:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 29:12Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 29:13Sarah Centrella: Yes.
- 29:13Sarah Centrella: So that is how your mindset dictates your actual act actions, the things you actually do.
- 29:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 29:19Sarah Centrella: So if instead, I'm telling myself every morning in my.
- 29:24Sarah Centrella: Morning practice.
- 29:24Sarah Centrella: I am beautiful.
- 29:26Sarah Centrella: I am sexy.
- 29:26Sarah Centrella: I'm vibrant.
- 29:27Sarah Centrella: I feel fantastic.
- 29:28Sarah Centrella: God, I'm in the best shape of my life.
- 29:29Sarah Centrella: I feel all of those could be total freaking lies, by the way.
- 29:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love that.
- 29:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like
- 29:35Sarah Centrella: full lies.
- 29:36Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 29:36Sarah Centrella: Because remember they are, they're pulling me to where I wanna go.
- 29:40Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 29:40Sarah Centrella: So they're kind of at the top of the ladder throwing me a line and I'm like using it to get up there.
- 29:44Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 29:45Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 29:45Sarah Centrella: So I want them to feel.
- 29:48Sarah Centrella: Almost like lies because that's how I have to retrain the programming in.
- 29:51Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 29:51Sarah Centrella: My head and our brain works just like a computer.
- 29:55Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 29:55Sarah Centrella: So if I'm not putting in a new program, I'm only gonna be running the old one over and over again.
- 29:59Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 29:59Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 30:00Sarah Centrella: So I remember the very first I that I ever used was right after my ex-husband left.
- 30:05Sarah Centrella: And I was, you know, after the twins.
- 30:07Sarah Centrella: It was the heaviest point in my life.
- 30:09Sarah Centrella: It felt horrible.
- 30:10Sarah Centrella: Okay.
- 30:11Sarah Centrella: Literally had these nasty, nasty voice in my head that all day, every day told me how awful I looked and how terrible I, you know, it was so nasty, right?
- 30:22Sarah Centrella: And I just remember one day going like, this does not make me wanna go to the gym.
- 30:26Sarah Centrella: This does not make me wanna skip on ice.
- 30:30Sarah Centrella: You know, like yeah.
- 30:31Sarah Centrella: Listening to that voice all day, it just makes you feel like, well, who cares?
- 30:33Sarah Centrella: I guess I'll just sit here
- 30:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: and let it happen.
- 30:35Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 30:36Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Gonna give up.
- 30:36Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 30:37Sarah Centrella: So how I even came a across like these tools is one day I just said, I'm done with that.
- 30:42Sarah Centrella: That feels terrible, and I don't wanna feel terrible anymore.
- 30:45Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 30:45Sarah Centrella: I just remember looking in the mirror and I was like, you're beautiful.
- 30:47Sarah Centrella: You're sexy, you're amazing.
- 30:49Sarah Centrella: Your body looks great.
- 30:50Sarah Centrella: Your body's responding quickly.
- 30:52Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 30:52Sarah Centrella: You look great easily.
- 30:53Sarah Centrella: So I just started reversing all the lies.
- 30:56Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 30:56Sarah Centrella: That I'm telling myself and.
- 30:59Sarah Centrella: I only did it because I felt better in the moment.
- 31:01Sarah Centrella: I didn't think it would have any long-term impact, but the more that I did it, the more I felt that way.
- 31:06Sarah Centrella: The more I showed up that way, the more I got dressed.
- 31:08Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 31:08Sarah Centrella: Instead of wore sweatpants, the more I put makeup on instead of, you know, like not showering for a week.
- 31:13Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 31:14Sarah Centrella: And it started changing how the energy I was projecting into the world, which changed how people responded to me.
- 31:20Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 31:20Sarah Centrella: Which I went from being totally invisible to being seen again.
- 31:23Sarah Centrella: You know?
- 31:24Sarah Centrella: So like that's how it tangibly.
- 31:26Sarah Centrella: Makes a difference.
- 31:27Sarah Centrella: And then probably about a year later, I remember I was like walking by a store, you know, window and caught a glimpse of myself and I was like, damn, girl, you hot so good.
- 31:38Sarah Centrella: It was this automatic thing where I was like, oh my God, I really feel like all the things I've been saying.
- 31:43Sarah Centrella: So for all the women out there, we all grew up with.
- 31:46Sarah Centrella: I call her nasty bitch.
- 31:47Sarah Centrella: Sorry, who's in our head, whose job it is to tear us down.
- 31:52Sarah Centrella: Never met a woman who doesn't have that voice in their head.
- 31:53Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 31:54Sarah Centrella: But we don't have to listen to her anymore.
- 31:56Sarah Centrella: You literally turn the other one on and be like, fill me up, girl.
- 32:00Sarah Centrella: Fill me up.
- 32:00Sarah Centrella: Let's go.
- 32:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, your inner hype woman, right?
- 32:02Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yep.
- 32:03Sarah Centrella: And you become her.
- 32:04Sarah Centrella: You show up as her people respond to you as her, and that starts changing everything.
- 32:09Sarah Centrella: It starts opening doors instead of closing them, starts bringing amazing new people into your life.
- 32:13Sarah Centrella: It starts.
- 32:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah,
- 32:15Sarah Centrella: giving you the aura and the energy that attracts all the things you want.
- 32:19Sarah Centrella: It's really powerful and very simple.
- 32:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's so beautiful how simple it is Yeah.
- 32:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And how complicated we make it.
- 32:25Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it's,
- 32:26Sarah Centrella: yeah, exactly.
- 32:27Sarah Centrella: It's, yeah.
- 32:29Sarah Centrella: It's like, nope, a 2-year-old could do this, y'all.
- 32:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 32:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's so true.
- 32:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 32:33Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it's amazing.
- 32:33Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like you look at little kids.
- 32:35Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And they have that fearlessness in them, right?
- 32:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: They think they can do anything.
- 32:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I mean, my husband told me that when he was like three, he was convinced he was superman, tied a sheet around his neck and jumped out of a two story window.
- 32:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Luckily landed in some bushes and it was all good.
- 32:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I think maybe he like scraped himself up a little bit, but it's like that degree of like fearlessness, we are conditioned to lose over time.
- 32:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Such a great tool to reclaim that, right?
- 33:02Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 33:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Especially in a period of our life where we shouldn't just accept, you know, the over the hill trope of, you know, blah, everything's gonna be in a decline now.
- 33:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 33:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: No, this is that reclamation of your power in midlife, and I love that.
- 33:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 33:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Or at any point in your life, right, at any point in your life that you need this tool, whether you're in your younger years or older years, you can reclaim that power for yourself.
- 33:25Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You get to, to change.
- 33:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Absolutely.
- 33:28Sarah Centrella: And it just feels so much better.
- 33:29Sarah Centrella: Like you go through the day with so much more energy, you have confidence.
- 33:34Sarah Centrella: That confidence, you know, like I said, is mirrored out and brought back to you all day long, every day.
- 33:39Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 33:40Sarah Centrella: We all know what that feels like.
- 33:41Sarah Centrella: 'cause we've all had those highs, right?
- 33:42Sarah Centrella: We've all been on a winning streak or whatever.
- 33:45Sarah Centrella: This is a tool that will keep you in that energy that you make happen for yourself all the time.
- 33:53Sarah Centrella: So you're not waiting for that thing to happen to make you feel like, oh, now I'm winning.
- 33:58Sarah Centrella: Because sometimes that might, that, that could be a year in between those types of wins.
- 34:02Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 34:02Sarah Centrella: True.
- 34:03Sarah Centrella: I'm not trying to put the rest of the year in blah land, you know?
- 34:06Sarah Centrella: No, no, no, no.
- 34:07Sarah Centrella: So like this is how I bring that energy into my daily life on a daily basis.
- 34:13Sarah Centrella: So that I feel that way.
- 34:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That is fabulous.
- 34:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So tell me more about the vision boards.
- 34:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like I wanna know how to create one of these or future boards, that's what you call it, the future boards.
- 34:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 34:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I wanna know how to create these or teach our listeners how to create these where you are.
- 34:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Able to bring to fruition all of the things that you're manifesting.
- 34:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like that's such a beautiful concept.
- 34:36Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 34:36Sarah Centrella: The first thing to kind of note is that I always have all of my clients write down their life plan story.
- 34:42Sarah Centrella: And I can send you the link and you can share it with your Yeah, yeah.
- 34:44Sarah Centrella: With your clients.
- 34:44Sarah Centrella: Um,'cause it gives them the breakdown of exactly how to do this assignment.
- 34:48Sarah Centrella: It forces you to really think about what is, what do I want?
- 34:52Sarah Centrella: What is my, yeah.
- 34:53Sarah Centrella: Perfect ideal future look like?
- 34:55Sarah Centrella: Like if I'm allowed to have that wish, which you are.
- 34:58Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 34:58Sarah Centrella: What does it look like if my career is super fulfilling and I love it and the schedule isn't too crazy and I'm getting paid what I am deserving and yes.
- 35:06Sarah Centrella: All those little things that annoy me.
- 35:08Sarah Centrella: What if they were all fixed and it was really, really great?
- 35:11Sarah Centrella: And what if my relationships were just like beautiful and healthy and fulfilling and loving?
- 35:15Sarah Centrella: And so you go through all these categories.
- 35:17Sarah Centrella: What if physically I felt amazing?
- 35:19Sarah Centrella: What if.
- 35:20Sarah Centrella: On a mental side, like I felt strong and was taking the time to de-stress, but I was also growth too.
- 35:27Sarah Centrella: So I go through these various categories.
- 35:29Sarah Centrella: Money is great.
- 35:30Sarah Centrella: Things are going really well on that, and it forces you to write out, okay, if all that's true, what does that look like for me?
- 35:36Sarah Centrella: Can I draw that up?
- 35:37Sarah Centrella: Can I architect it?
- 35:39Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 35:39Sarah Centrella: And the thing is, is that most of us go through our lives after our twenties.
- 35:45Sarah Centrella: With zero plan or very little plan.
- 35:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 35:49Sarah Centrella: For the rest of our lives.
- 35:50Sarah Centrella: Right, because the, your entire childhood, everyone's asking you what do you wanna be when you grow up, right?
- 35:55Sarah Centrella: Yep.
- 35:56Sarah Centrella: And then you go to school.
- 35:57Sarah Centrella: What are you majoring in?
- 35:58Sarah Centrella: What are you, whatever.
- 35:59Sarah Centrella: Okay, now you got a job.
- 36:00Sarah Centrella: What are your job?
- 36:01Sarah Centrella: No one ever asks you after that, and so we forget to ask ourselves.
- 36:06Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 36:06Sarah Centrella: We stop planning, you know?
- 36:07Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 36:07Sarah Centrella: We might be like, Hey, I wanna get married or wanna have kids, but like for the most part.
- 36:11Sarah Centrella: All that goal setting, we were doing all that vision setting, all those dreams that we had, the first 20, maybe 30 years of our life just falls off Cliff, and we just let life unfold and hope good things will happen.
- 36:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: When those plans don't work out the way that you want them to, you feel like you're stuck.
- 36:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 36:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 36:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I remember leaving my first job.
- 36:33Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And being devastated and like crying to my husband that I'm, I was supposed to be at this job forever.
- 36:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 36:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And he got me down and he was like, are you delusional?
- 36:44Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I was like, but I did everything on the list and I'm supposed to be here forever.
- 36:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And he's like.
- 36:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That's the wildest thing I've ever heard.
- 36:52Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like, no, that's not rooted in reality.
- 36:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 36:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: No.
- 36:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So I feel like this is a great way to kind of shift that out of that.
- 36:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 36:59Sarah Centrella: And also it's a way to check in with yourself.
- 37:01Sarah Centrella: I always have my clients do it at the beginning of the year, every year.
- 37:04Sarah Centrella: So you're checking in with yourself'cause you grow, right?
- 37:06Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 37:07Sarah Centrella: In this last six months we've grown.
- 37:09Sarah Centrella: In the last year, we've definitely grown.
- 37:11Sarah Centrella: And that's when you check in and say like, Hey, is this job really serving me?
- 37:14Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 37:14Sarah Centrella: Am I really miserable or am I just having bad attitude about it every day?
- 37:18Sarah Centrella: And if I wasn't doing this job, what would I do?
- 37:20Sarah Centrella: And what's holding me back?
- 37:21Sarah Centrella: So it, it gives you that introspective to see like, am am I moving towards the life that I want and the things that I want?
- 37:29Sarah Centrella: Or am I kind of in this stagnant space where fear and doubt are?
- 37:34Sarah Centrella: Keeping me from making any type of move.
- 37:36Sarah Centrella: So this exercise, the life plan story, which I'll send to you is just a great spot to give you permission to totally dream and scope it all out, build that architecture foundation, and then we go over to Pinterest and we literally start searching up everything in the story.
- 37:52Sarah Centrella: And so, you know, we start going like, okay, if I am successful, let's say I'm successfully running my own company.
- 37:59Sarah Centrella: What can I create?
- 38:01Sarah Centrella: Kind of a visual, what does that, what does one of those days look like?
- 38:04Sarah Centrella: Is that me leading a seminar?
- 38:05Sarah Centrella: Is that me working one-on-one with a client?
- 38:08Sarah Centrella: Is it me on a big, big stage or whatever your goals or dreams are, and then you're just literally like woman stage photography and you're searching it up.
- 38:17Sarah Centrella: And most people don't know this, but Pinterest is the largest photography library on the entire internet.
- 38:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I did not.
- 38:24Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: No, no.
- 38:24Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 38:24Sarah Centrella: Most people use it for DIY or recipes or whatever.
- 38:26Sarah Centrella: If you add the word photography to any search, you're gonna see a whole different side of Pinterest, and it's really inspiring and really exciting because it starts to become everything that's in your little personal brain.
- 38:38Sarah Centrella: All of a sudden you're seeing it in front of you.
- 38:39Sarah Centrella: You're seeing hundreds of examples of people living this dream that maybe never told anyone you even had.
- 38:46Sarah Centrella: 'cause you were so scared'cause it felt so big.
- 38:49Sarah Centrella: And now you see all these versions of people living this dream.
- 38:52Sarah Centrella: So it's real.
- 38:53Sarah Centrella: Someone's doing it.
- 38:54Sarah Centrella: And then you can find a picture that's like, oh my God, that's me doing.
- 38:57Sarah Centrella: The thing I wanted to do.
- 38:59Sarah Centrella: And so every single picture is like that.
- 39:01Sarah Centrella: Which is why this is so different than a traditional vision board because those are just magazine collages that mean nothing.
- 39:08Sarah Centrella: This is very, very intentionally architecting my future.
- 39:12Sarah Centrella: Yes.
- 39:13Sarah Centrella: And it's helping me identify what matters to me, why it matters.
- 39:17Sarah Centrella: And it is showing is huge.
- 39:19Sarah Centrella: That's possible.
- 39:20Sarah Centrella: And it's showing me what my future is, showing me what I'm working towards.
- 39:23Sarah Centrella: And I've had 12 boards now in the last 15 years come to life, like 60 to 70% in a year on an annual basis.
- 39:33Sarah Centrella: Amazing.
- 39:33Sarah Centrella: Um, I've taken my kids to seven countries.
- 39:36Sarah Centrella: I've.
- 39:36Sarah Centrella: For the last four years, held international retreats all over the world.
- 39:40Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 39:40Sarah Centrella: Manifested, love manifested like a new career over and over, like, I mean, the list goes on and on and on.
- 39:46Sarah Centrella: My son manifested his dream playing football at Oregon.
- 39:49Sarah Centrella: So amazing.
- 39:50Sarah Centrella: There's just, there's really no limit to what you can, you can ask for and put out there and live.
- 39:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 39:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I, I love that, and I love that you've passed those principles down to your kids too.
- 40:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I mean, what an amazing tool to grow up with.
- 40:04Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I, I always feel like we'd be.
- 40:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: More functional, not functional.
- 40:09Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I think more inspired human beings.
- 40:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 40:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: If we were able to harness that at a younger age.
- 40:14Sarah Centrella: Oh my gosh.
- 40:15Sarah Centrella: Me too.
- 40:15Sarah Centrella: Brain's
- 40:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: not ready either.
- 40:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 40:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So
- 40:17Sarah Centrella: I always tell parents, I'm like, teach them what you're learning.
- 40:21Sarah Centrella: Because if we knew how to control our thoughts, if we knew how to turn around that negative way, said 7, 8, 9, 10, whatever.
- 40:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 40:27Sarah Centrella: Where would we be?
- 40:28Sarah Centrella: You know?
- 40:29Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 40:29Sarah Centrella: So you can absolutely teach your kids.
- 40:31Sarah Centrella: I started pumping my son full of those I am affirmations creating who he wanted to be, but who he wasn't at the time, back when he was like six years old, you know, he was the type that wanted to give up real quick if he didn't get it right.
- 40:43Sarah Centrella: And I'd be like, you are so determined.
- 40:45Sarah Centrella: You're the most determined kid I've ever known.
- 40:48Sarah Centrella: That kid was not determined, but he got there.
- 40:54Sarah Centrella: But because I was constantly putting it in his head.
- 40:57Sarah Centrella: Yeah, right.
- 40:58Sarah Centrella: Then he stopped giving up so easily and he started being more determined and literally his coaches in college would be like that.
- 41:04Sarah Centrella: Kid's so determined and that would be something that he would describe himself as now as an adult.
- 41:09Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 41:09Sarah Centrella: You know, so that, that's the evolution of what I tell myself.
- 41:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Oh, amazing.
- 41:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 41:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That's fabulous.
- 41:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Wow.
- 41:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's crazy.
- 41:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So yeah.
- 41:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's like Jedi minds, right?
- 41:19Sarah Centrella: You, you feel like superhuman a little bit.
- 41:21Sarah Centrella: You're like, oh my God, I made that happen.
- 41:25Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 41:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So how do you teach people to identify what their priorities are when they're, when they're doing this?
- 41:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: For those of us who are out there who wanna improve multiple areas in their lives, like how do you prioritize?
- 41:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like, what is going to be the most important thing?
- 41:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Or can you work on all of them at the same time?
- 41:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 41:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Ooh.
- 41:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 41:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Maybe that's a limiting thought that you only have to do one at a time.
- 41:47Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 41:47Sarah Centrella: Such a good question.
- 41:48Sarah Centrella: I get that a lot because my future boards and my whole method is based on five core categories of life.
- 41:54Sarah Centrella: And those are.
- 41:55Sarah Centrella: Relationships, which means all people in your life, your career and your ambitions and, your wealth and abundance, your mind and body and your passions and joys.
- 42:05Sarah Centrella: So for me and the coaching that I've done over the last 15 years, I've really found that those are the main categories anyway, that when we are putting energy into all of those, we feel fulfilled.
- 42:17Sarah Centrella: When we're not, we don't.
- 42:19Sarah Centrella: So I would say.
- 42:21Sarah Centrella: As a general rule, most Americans put all their energy into career, some energy into relationships.
- 42:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 42:29Sarah Centrella: And maybe 20% of'em put it into exercise on the body side.
- 42:36Sarah Centrella: That's a, that's, but that's Leave an overestimation on the table.
- 42:40Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 42:40Sarah Centrella: Hot on the table.
- 42:42Sarah Centrella: And then we wonder like, why do I feel stressed all the time?
- 42:44Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 42:44Sarah Centrella: Why am I so obsessed about my job?
- 42:47Sarah Centrella: Why is my family complaining about because I'm not present and I'm not enjoying life.
- 42:52Sarah Centrella: It's because I don't have these other components.
- 42:54Sarah Centrella: And the first time I went to Italy, it just impacted everything about my life.
- 42:58Sarah Centrella: I saw just how different humans can live.
- 43:02Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 43:02Sarah Centrella: And be successful.
- 43:03Sarah Centrella: I think there's a misnomer that, you know, Europeans aren't successful.
- 43:07Sarah Centrella: They just lay around and drink and eat all day and whatever.
- 43:11Sarah Centrella: Like, I'm sorry.
- 43:12Sarah Centrella: There's a lot of very, very successful Yeah, exactly.
- 43:16Sarah Centrella: Who are successful, uh, but they know how to balance, right?
- 43:19Sarah Centrella: Mm-hmm.
- 43:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You're
- 43:20Sarah Centrella: fine with taking a two hour lunch because they're with an old friend and Yeah.
- 43:24Sarah Centrella: They know how to savor a meal and that is important.
- 43:28Sarah Centrella: And so that becomes this pocket of joy that is sacred to them.
- 43:32Sarah Centrella: And then they'll go back and get their work done.
- 43:33Sarah Centrella: Right?
- 43:34Sarah Centrella: Those are just the types of things that we don't do here and we don't necessarily know their value.
- 43:39Sarah Centrella: And so we just steam ahead with our crazy schedules and on we go.
- 43:43Sarah Centrella: But if we were able to like slow down a little bit and say, Hey, what brings me joy?
- 43:48Sarah Centrella: And most of the time I will tell you women especially can't answer that.
- 43:52Sarah Centrella: At all.
- 43:52Sarah Centrella: They have no, they just look at me like I'm crazy.
- 43:54Sarah Centrella: They're just like, what are you talking about?
- 43:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'll be honest, like I, I was in that boat, right?
- 44:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because when you go through a bunch of different things in life for me it was like my training and my education, I dropped all of these hobbies that I used to, yeah.
- 44:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 44:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yep.
- 44:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So then I end up in motherhood and starting my career without having those things that were previously bringing me joy.
- 44:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Joy and passion and balance.
- 44:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 44:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And balance and all of those things.
- 44:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And then you hit a point where, you know, I was talking to my husband, our son's 13, and it's only gonna be five years before he's out of the house and we're empty nesters.
- 44:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 44:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And that's gonna fly by I, right.
- 44:29Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I was like, oh my God.
- 44:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: We need hobbies.
- 44:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, we absolutely, because I see my patients struggle.
- 44:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right.
- 44:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: When they retire, they don't know what they're gonna do with themselves.
- 44:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 44:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So afterwards.
- 44:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But I think that practice of trying to figure out how to build those passions and joys, it's something I'm actively working on.
- 44:45Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 44:45Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'd love to hear what you have to advise people to do that.
- 44:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 44:49Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Because for somebody who used to have a ton of hobbies and drop them all, like hot potatoes along the way.
- 44:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 44:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I don't know what to do with myself now.
- 44:56Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I was like, what do I even start with?
- 44:57Sarah Centrella: Exactly.
- 44:58Sarah Centrella: No, I would say that is the reaction I get almost a hundred percent of the time when I first wrote Hustle, believe, receive, I did a book tour and I was explaining the five categories or whatever, and I used to call them hobbies.
- 45:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 45:09Sarah Centrella: The whole, like the whole room is just like.
- 45:12Sarah Centrella: Huh?
- 45:13Sarah Centrella: What does that mean?
- 45:14Sarah Centrella: Like,
- 45:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: yeah,
- 45:15Sarah Centrella: like what's, who has time for a hobby?
- 45:17Sarah Centrella: My kids do hobbies, right?
- 45:19Sarah Centrella: And so I changed it to passions and joys.
- 45:21Sarah Centrella: 'cause I was like, you know, gotta gotta work with what we have.
- 45:24Sarah Centrella: But I think if you can take a moment and say, throughout my life, and probably go back to childhood, that's usually where people can kind of reengage in something that brings them joy.
- 45:34Sarah Centrella: Say, what did I used to do that I just.
- 45:38Sarah Centrella: Did it'cause I loved it.
- 45:39Sarah Centrella: 'cause I really looked forward to it.
- 45:40Sarah Centrella: 'cause it was really fun.
- 45:41Sarah Centrella: And for me, when I was a kid, I had a horse and I used to be obsessed with horses and I loved horses.
- 45:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 45:48Sarah Centrella: And as an adult, I've never ridden a horse or really been around a horse.
- 45:52Sarah Centrella: So when I started looking at this, I was like.
- 45:55Sarah Centrella: Maybe horses would still bring me joy.
- 45:56Sarah Centrella: And so we go out to the ranch about five miles from here and volunteer and we just like brush the horses and talk to the horses and feed the horses like, you know, and it's this great little one hour a week that's just like total zen.
- 46:11Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 46:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Total
- 46:12Sarah Centrella: checkout, you know, brings back kind of that feeling of childhood joy again is something very simple, but it's a way that I can integrate that into my life now and still get that benefit.
- 46:23Sarah Centrella: Another one for me when I came back from Italy was cooking.
- 46:25Sarah Centrella: I was like, oh, I see the passion for food and like, I want that type of mom.
- 46:29Sarah Centrella: I wanna teach my kids to love food like that.
- 46:31Sarah Centrella: And so I just did.
- 46:33Sarah Centrella: I came back and I started cooking and I wasn't great at it.
- 46:36Sarah Centrella: And I just kept going, kept going, and then I started getting better at it.
- 46:39Sarah Centrella: And that's the part of the passions and joys that is really key.
- 46:43Sarah Centrella: If you can pick something, whatever it is.
- 46:45Sarah Centrella: Could be dancing.
- 46:46Sarah Centrella: Could be, yeah.
- 46:46Sarah Centrella: Gardening could be DIY.
- 46:48Sarah Centrella: It doesn't matter.
- 46:49Sarah Centrella: But it's typically a doing.
- 46:50Sarah Centrella: So it's an activity with your hands or with your body, right?
- 46:53Sarah Centrella: And it's something that you will get better at over time.
- 46:56Sarah Centrella: So that's an important component to it.
- 46:57Sarah Centrella: Just like we understand as moms that it's important our kids go through that, right?
- 47:02Sarah Centrella: That is why we put them in all the activities we put them in.
- 47:05Sarah Centrella: Yes.
- 47:05Sarah Centrella: Because we wanna teach them how to get better at something over time.
- 47:08Sarah Centrella: Because that builds confidence.
- 47:10Sarah Centrella: Mm-hmm.
- 47:10Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 47:10Sarah Centrella: It builds self-esteem, it does all these things.
- 47:13Sarah Centrella: But we forget to do that for ourselves, right?
- 47:15Sarah Centrella: If you always wanted to take a cooking class, the first couple cooking classes, you probably are not gonna like it.
- 47:20Sarah Centrella: Just like your kid did not like soccer when they started soccer, right?
- 47:23Sarah Centrella: And what did you tell them?
- 47:24Sarah Centrella: Keep going.
- 47:25Sarah Centrella: Just go this year if you hated them, what?
- 47:27Sarah Centrella: Right.
- 47:27Sarah Centrella: Then we'll stop.
- 47:28Sarah Centrella: Do the same thing with yourself, right?
- 47:30Sarah Centrella: Say, I'm gonna sign up for 12 cooking classes.
- 47:32Sarah Centrella: And I'm gonna show up for all 12.
- 47:34Sarah Centrella: And if after that, I never wanna touch a pan again.
- 47:37Sarah Centrella: Cool.
- 47:37Sarah Centrella: That wasn't for me.
- 47:38Sarah Centrella: But my guess is you'll get better over time and you'll actually start to find that pocket of joy.
- 47:43Sarah Centrella: And those are the pieces that we're missing in our life.
- 47:46Sarah Centrella: So it just takes a little experimenting at first.
- 47:50Sarah Centrella: I've had clients who, started playing guitar.
- 47:52Sarah Centrella: And that was kind of their one thing that they had put off their whole life and just started bringing back in.
- 47:57Sarah Centrella: Got a little online tutor and, you know, two years later playing guitar and really love it.
- 48:02Sarah Centrella: And that's a de-stressor for them, you know?
- 48:04Sarah Centrella: So it could be anything.
- 48:05Sarah Centrella: It could be golf, it could be, I try to stay away from exercise'cause that's has its own category.
- 48:10Sarah Centrella: We need to keep them separate, but this is really something that.
- 48:13Sarah Centrella: That brings you joy that you can see get better over time, that you get satisfaction from.
- 48:18Sarah Centrella: You build something, you feel satisfied.
- 48:20Sarah Centrella: When you weed a garden, you feel satisfied.
- 48:22Sarah Centrella: It takes a little bit of creative thinking.
- 48:25Sarah Centrella: But start with what I liked as a kid, as a teenager, even in my early twenties.
- 48:30Sarah Centrella: And then if you're still struggling, go try those things again.
- 48:32Sarah Centrella: Like one at a time.
- 48:34Sarah Centrella: And if you're still struggling, then think like, what have I seen on TV?
- 48:38Sarah Centrella: Or you know, in books or movies that seemed really cool.
- 48:42Sarah Centrella: And then we give that a try, right?
- 48:44Sarah Centrella: And we just, we keep trying new things and it's so good for your brain.
- 48:48Sarah Centrella: It's so good for all of your motor cognition.
- 48:51Sarah Centrella: It's so good for all of it, right?
- 48:52Sarah Centrella: It helps you feel young, keeps you young.
- 48:55Sarah Centrella: Most importantly, it becomes this tool that.
- 48:58Sarah Centrella: Allows you to have a pure pocket in your life, whether it's an hour, half, hour, whatever, that that pure focus of the doing forces you to block out everything else, the stress, the whatever.
- 49:13Sarah Centrella: So it becomes almost an act of meditation.
- 49:15Sarah Centrella: And those are the types of things we don't do.
- 49:17Sarah Centrella: And then we wonder why we're so fricking stressed.
- 49:19Sarah Centrella: Anything that like lets it go.
- 49:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 49:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's so funny that you say that.
- 49:23Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: 'cause I was thinking back to my mom when I was little, she put me in sewing lessons, right?
- 49:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 49:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And she put my sisters and stuff, and my sisters didn't really love it, but I loved it with a passion to the point where like, I did some costuming for some Oh, I love that.
- 49:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: School and high school.
- 49:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And then, when we were in medical school, we had a winter formal.
- 49:44Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And, you know, you're, when you're a med student, you're, yeah.
- 49:46Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And so like the last few years I made dresses for some of my Oh, love that.
- 49:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It was just, it was something that was like very meditative to me.
- 49:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yep.
- 49:55Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I remember I was sitting for my first board exam in medical school, which is called the US Emily.
- 50:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 50:00Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And it's one of the hardest ones.
- 50:02Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: You've never sat for an exam like that in your life, so you don't really know what to expect.
- 50:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right, right.
- 50:06Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Very different than anything you took in college.
- 50:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I was so stressed.
- 50:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I remember I was just like beyond.
- 50:12Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like out of my mind.
- 50:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah.
- 50:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And my mom knew, right?
- 50:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So she called and she said, well, I want you to go to Sears.
- 50:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: 'cause at that time, there were Sears everywhere.
- 50:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And I have something for you there that you're gonna go pick up and they're gonna tell you to go to the next door.
- 50:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And so she got me a sewing machine and she, I love her for the fabric, right?
- 50:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And she, she was like, you're gonna take the day off and go do a project and get de-stress and then you're gonna go back to your studying.
- 50:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Right?
- 50:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Like, you just need a, yeah.
- 50:41Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: A solid break in there.
- 50:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So yeah, so maybe that's the thing I'd go back to.
- 50:45Sarah Centrella: Brilliant.
- 50:46Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Now that I'm talking about it, I'm talking myself into like busting out my sewing machine and my serger.
- 50:50Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Exactly.
- 50:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah,
- 50:51Sarah Centrella: absolutely.
- 50:51Sarah Centrella: Do it and, and, and don't, the big thing is like, I think a lot of times we have a tendency to over estimate.
- 51:00Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 51:00Sarah Centrella: You know, or, or set goals that are unreachable.
- 51:04Sarah Centrella: I don't know why we love doing that, but we love doing that.
- 51:06Sarah Centrella: I always say dream huge, dream unrealistic.
- 51:09Sarah Centrella: But go do your goals the other way around.
- 51:11Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 51:11Sarah Centrella: Do your goals in little tiny bits and pieces.
- 51:13Sarah Centrella: Yep.
- 51:13Sarah Centrella: So that every time you sit down to do it, you're winning.
- 51:17Sarah Centrella: And the only thing you're looking for there is can I just pull it out for 30 minutes and just like have fun with it?
- 51:23Sarah Centrella: See if I remember how to like thread the needle and Yeah.
- 51:26Sarah Centrella: Pull out some patterns and, and then when you're done, just ask yourself like, was I thinking about all the other stuff?
- 51:33Sarah Centrella: And you'll just start to really see like, oh, I get it now.
- 51:37Sarah Centrella: Yeah.
- 51:37Sarah Centrella: Like I wasn't stressed about work.
- 51:39Sarah Centrella: I wasn't stressed about whatever's going on in my life.
- 51:41Sarah Centrella: I was actually focused, which, yep, active meditation.
- 51:45Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So
- 51:45Sarah Centrella: I love that and I definitely challenge you to pull it back.
- 51:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Okay, well I'll, I'll send you what I may, I'll show you what I may, I love
- 51:52Sarah Centrella: it.
- 51:52Sarah Centrella: I'll send
- 51:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: you a photo.
- 51:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'll like what?
- 51:53Sarah Centrella: Start sending, I'm sending you patterns, girl.
- 51:56Sarah Centrella: Yeah,
- 51:56Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: please do.
- 51:58Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I actually wanna go find like vintage patterns because I love fashion and clothes and just see if I can find like any vintage patterns and maybe make something outta, oh my God, like a
- 52:07Sarah Centrella: 1940s like flare dress.
- 52:09Sarah Centrella: I'd be so with pockets.
- 52:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes, with pockets, pockets are crucial.
- 52:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes.
- 52:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Always.
- 52:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yes and custom tailored.
- 52:16Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: One of my big gripes, and this is a very random aside, is how can men can go into, like, I know, apply and get measured and walk out looking like a million bucks in an hour and I'm.
- 52:27Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Walking through the racks at like Nordstrom or like whatever other store I'm at in the mall, and like an hour later I have Yeah, exactly.
- 52:37Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I They do tailor.
- 52:38Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: They do tailor, right.
- 52:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But it's, uh, it's a, a different process I think than, yeah.
- 52:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So, no, I,
- 52:44Sarah Centrella: I love it.
- 52:45Sarah Centrella: I think that, that, I think you're going to see definitely that little benefit.
- 52:50Sarah Centrella: And then you just.
- 52:51Sarah Centrella: See if you can do it for half hour, an hour a week initially.
- 52:54Sarah Centrella: Just be like, Hey, okay, sit down.
- 52:55Sarah Centrella: And then as it, you know, as you get better, you get more passionate about it, and you have more, you make more time for it, right?
- 53:02Sarah Centrella: And then you'll really, really start to see the benefit.
- 53:04Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Okay.
- 53:05Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: All right.
- 53:06Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Well, I will report back to you and to our listeners about what my output was from my sewing machine.
- 53:11Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So I love it.
- 53:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Thank you so much.
- 53:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: This has been such a fabulous conversation.
- 53:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I feel like you and I could talk for hours, which we kind of did, did at the pool side anyway.
- 53:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: But, uh, I just, I just wanna say thank you for coming on here and sharing your thoughts and how you managed to change your life in such an inspiring way.
- 53:30Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Aw.
- 53:31Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I knew it from the moment that I met you, that you were a special person, and then learning more about what you do and getting to know you over these last several weeks.
- 53:39Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I, I just feel so blessed to have you in my life and should so thank you.
- 53:43Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Thank you for being, feeling is mute.
- 53:45Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: For our listeners, Sarah is hosting a series of book events.
- 53:50Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Mm-hmm.
- 53:50Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: When her book comes out, I believe it's January Yeah.
- 53:53Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Of 2026.
- 53:54Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: She's going to be having an event here in Seattle.
- 53:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's at sarah centrella.com.
- 53:59Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And if you are not in the Pacific Northwest, there are events around the country.
- 54:04Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: That are associated with her book release, you get to meet her in person.
- 54:07Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Do you wanna talk a little bit about what the events will be like?
- 54:10Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Yeah, because I registered, I'm ready to go.
- 54:12Sarah Centrella: I love it.
- 54:13Sarah Centrella: Yeah, they are mindset workshops.
- 54:14Sarah Centrella: So I'm gonna be actually teaching the tools that are in my new book.
- 54:18Sarah Centrella: Think It.
- 54:19Sarah Centrella: They're four hour workshops, so you're really gonna come in, bring a notepad, bring a pen, and I'm gonna teach you how to not only, you know, do mental tennis, but.
- 54:28Sarah Centrella: There I have seven tools total, that are brain trainers.
- 54:32Sarah Centrella: Train your brain just like mental, you know, mental fitness is the new self-care.
- 54:36Sarah Centrella: I always say it is the thing that will impact every aspect of your life the quickest.
- 54:41Sarah Centrella: And just make the biggest impact.
- 54:44Sarah Centrella: So, yeah, come, I can't, I have one in Portland, and Seattle, and then 15 other cities across the country.
- 54:50Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Thank you Sarah.
- 54:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Have a great rest of your day and I will look forward to connecting with you soon.
- 54:56Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: To all our listeners, again, you can find everything you need to know about sarahcentrella.com.
- 55:01Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'll link that below in the show notes as well as links to her books that are coming out and the one that you can pre-order for a January release, which is called Think It.
- 55:08Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Have a great day everyone, and I'll see you on the next episode.
- 55:11Sarah Centrella: Thanks Komal.
- 55:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Hi everyone.
- 55:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: It's me again.
- 55:14Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Wasn't that a fabulous episode?
- 55:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I just really loved chatting with Sarah and hearing everything that she had to say, and I'm so excited for the release of her upcoming book and her event here in Seattle.
- 55:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I hope that you are able to make it out there.
- 55:28Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I'd love to meet you in real life, and I think it would be great for all of us to learn from her.
- 55:32Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I learned so much recording this episode.
- 55:34Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I learned about mental tennis and how to turn around thoughts and make them from negative to positive.
- 55:40Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I didn't realize we had 70 to 80,000 thoughts that were just bubbling up for us per day, and how many of'em were negative.
- 55:47Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: So I hope that you took that away.
- 55:48Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Second, this concept of future boards.
- 55:51Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I love it.
- 55:52Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I am looking at making my own to see just what I can manifest.
- 55:57Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I think harnessing that power in whatever stage of life you're in can be so empowering.
- 56:03Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And then I wanted to recap about Sarah's Centrella method, which focuses on five key areas of your life as you're trying to manifest what you want for your future.
- 56:13Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Number one, relationships.
- 56:15Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Number two, career and ambitions.
- 56:17Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Number three, wealth and abundance.
- 56:19Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Number four, mind and body.
- 56:21Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: And number five, passion and joys.
- 56:22Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: I really hope that you all got as much out of this episode as I did.
- 56:26Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia: Thank you for your support.
