- 0:00Doing Marriage Well from May 18, 2026 The filters in your mind.
- 0:05Are biases blurring your view?
- 0:07This week I want to talk about cognitive biases that can limit and hurt our marriages.
- 0:12I don't offer these so that you can accuse your spouse of them.
- 0:15Seeing them in your spouse can help you navigate a situation better,
- 0:18but unless you've discussed biases and your spouse is open to you pointing them
- 0:22out, you're probably better off not identifying them as they happen.
- 0:26My primary reason for sharing these Is so you can see them in yourself These
- 0:31biases alter how we see reality And that can lead to misunderstandings Hurt feelings and arguments.
- 0:37As we go through this week, consider each bias and ask yourself if you are given
- 0:41to it. First, we have confirmation bias.
- 0:45You interpret your spouse's words or actions to fit your pre-existing belief.
- 0:49Your belief may be based on what they have done in the past or your own stuff.
- 0:53Either way, you see what you expect to see rather than what is really there.
- 0:58To see how this plays out in the living room or the kitchen,
- 1:01let's look at a few common scenarios.
- 1:03The underappreciated spouse.
- 1:05A wife believes her husband doesn't notice her efforts at home.
- 1:08When he walks past a clean kitchen without comment, she sees that as proof.
- 1:13When he thanks her for dinner, she dismisses it as automatic politeness.
- 1:16Her belief replaces reality as she plays up confirming evidence and downplays
- 1:21evidence to the contrary.
- 1:23The Criticism Loop A husband believes his wife is hypercritical.
- 1:27He braces for criticism in every conversation, making him defensive.
- 1:31His defensiveness frustrates her, making her more critical.
- 1:35His original belief is self-fulfilling, but he is blind to his part.
- 1:39The jealous partner. A spouse suspects infidelity. A late meeting is proof.
- 1:44A normal meeting is suspicious.
- 1:47Friendliness towards an attractive
- 1:48person is a red flag. Coldness towards the same person is guilt.
- 1:52Fear colors every action, piling up more supposed proof of cheating.
- 1:57The incompatible couple. During a rough patch, one spouse decides they want
- 2:01such different things they are incompatible.
- 2:04From then on, every disagreement is seen as proof of deep incompatibility,
- 2:08while areas of agreement are ignored.
- 2:10Please challenge your negative beliefs about your spouse. Even if they are once
- 2:15true, people grow and change.
- 2:17Give your partner the benefit of the doubt and look for change.
- 2:20This is Paul, and doing marriage well is easier when you live in reality.
