SPEAKER_00: We're so excited that last week we had the opportunity to cover the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
0:16
SPEAKER_00: The festival was held from October 17th to 24th, 2019, and it was their fourth year running.
0:23
SPEAKER_00: It was held throughout various theaters in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.
0:29
SPEAKER_00: And we saw a lot of independent horror films from new and also some seasoned filmmakers.
0:39
SPEAKER_00: We're very excited to talk about these films that you might be able to see soon.
0:42
SPEAKER_00: More on that later.
0:44
SPEAKER_00: For now, enjoy our spoiler-free review of what we saw.
0:51
SPEAKER_00: Hello, Sydney.
0:56
SPEAKER_00: It's your killer host! My name is Parker, your resident horror fanatic.
1:01
SPEAKER_02: I'm Caroline, Scaredy Scream Queen.
1:04
SPEAKER_00: I'm Ian, Scary Movie Skeptic.
1:07
SPEAKER_00: And welcome to.
1:21
SPEAKER_02: What's your favorite scary movie is a horror film podcast where we're on a journey to find our favorite scary movie one at a time.
1:29
SPEAKER_01: Whether you hate them or love them, join us and discover yours.
1:36
SPEAKER_00: So this week, a bit of a different format, a little mix-up, because last week, I guess two weeks ago from when you might be listening to this, if you're listening to it the first week it's out, but in October, we were covering the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
1:53
SPEAKER_00: I saw quite a few movies.
1:55
SPEAKER_00: Caroline and Ian saw a couple, and so we're going to uh chat about them and chat a little bit about the experience and the festival because you know what?
2:05
SPEAKER_00: It was a pretty cool one, and I think more people should do it.
2:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
2:10
SPEAKER_00: There are lots of little uh horror film festivals out and about in various towns and places, so you know, keep an eye out on what's available around you.
2:20
SPEAKER_00: And you know, it honestly isn't terribly expensive.
2:24
SPEAKER_00: If you're excited to go see some independent horror films, it it's pretty cool stuff.
2:30
SPEAKER_01: And I think you can be surprised by what you can see on the screen.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: I saw some stuff.
2:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
2:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
2:39
SPEAKER_00: Some stuff I will never forget.
2:42
SPEAKER_00: Can unsee.
2:44
SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying bad stuff, I'm saying like stuff that I would not expect to see on like a movie theater screen that will haunt me for the rest of my life.
2:54
SPEAKER_00: It's hard not to go into detail.
2:56
SPEAKER_02: I saw some acting that I can't unsee as well.
3:00
SPEAKER_00: Oh.
3:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, we've talked before about on this podcast, I believe in like our Halloween episode or maybe one of our earlier uh episodes about um kind of the low budgets of what we saw, where a lot of progress in horror is made in these smaller, low budget, independent films that later inspire larger, more mainstream offerings.
3:23
SPEAKER_00: So I think a horror film festival is the perfect place to kind of get the uh the jump start on maybe new trends in horror films.
3:33
SPEAKER_00: Why don't we start with a movie that the three of us watched together about a week ago?
3:39
SPEAKER_00: A little uh gym called Porno.
3:44
SPEAKER_00: Since this is uh we're gonna talk about quite a few movies, I'm just gonna run through the facts, no explanation, and then we can talk some broad strokes about the movies.
3:53
SPEAKER_00: So an experiment and we'll see how it goes.
3:56
SPEAKER_00: Porno was directed by Keola Rockella, Rocella, Rocella.
4:00
SPEAKER_00: Some we're gonna say a lot of names, and I'm not gonna know how to say them.
4:05
SPEAKER_00: It was written by Matt Black and Lawrence Vinicelli, Vinicelli.
4:09
SPEAKER_00: It stars Evan Daves, Gillian Mueller, Caitlin Pierce, Larry Sapperstein, Glenn Stott, and Robbie Tan.
4:18
SPEAKER_00: One of y'all give me a good uh like two sentence summary of what you would say pornos about sex.
4:25
SPEAKER_02: Period.
4:26
SPEAKER_02: Okay, um a group of young Christian adults are Adults.
4:34
SPEAKER_02: No, young young teen Christians are left in charge of a movie theater for one night when a sexual misconduct um eventful evening takes place.
4:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean I think you could take that a step further.
4:57
SPEAKER_00: So they find a mysterious tape uh of an old erotic film and it unleashes a sex demon on the theater.
5:09
SPEAKER_00: So really just like a raucous romp.
5:13
SPEAKER_00: It was uh pretty funny, I thought.
5:15
SPEAKER_00: A good comedy.
5:17
SPEAKER_01: A romp com.
5:18
SPEAKER_00: A what?
5:19
SPEAKER_00: A rom.
5:19
SPEAKER_01: Rompcom.
5:21
SPEAKER_00: Pretty good comedy.
5:23
SPEAKER_00: You know, with a good tinge of, I would say, gore, nudity, and some pretty uh I mean, you don't have to think too hard about what they're trying to say with that one, you know, be yourself, uh statements about repression.
5:39
SPEAKER_00: Um, and I don't think it was ever like shitting on religion, but it was more of just like uh go with your gut and live your life and don't let people dictate what you feel or do.
5:51
SPEAKER_00: So what what would y'all say y'all thought about that movie?
5:56
SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
5:57
SPEAKER_02: I thought it was um Love is a strong word.
6:00
SPEAKER_00: In context He felt that don't let her hold you back, don't be repressed by Caroline Parker.
6:07
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
6:08
SPEAKER_02: Um go ahead.
6:09
SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
6:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought in context as to like it not like I think they were very resourceful, and I think they did a really good job probably in the confines that they had.
6:22
SPEAKER_00: So this was kind of it was like a one-setting film.
6:25
SPEAKER_00: You could tell like they rented some movie.
6:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they had some movie theater, they had a really great like uh effects artist, somebody making some really good gore in there, and they had some strong performers, and they um I think yeah, they worked, like Ian said, with what they had, and they really made it a good time.
6:46
SPEAKER_00: There's the um film that they play that's like the film within the film, and I thought that was a really exciting element in the movie where it was this like kind of arthouse erotic porn thing that I thought was really beautiful and was a nice change of pace from all of the uh more typical run, investigate, murder type stuff going on.
7:07
SPEAKER_01: I think like uh compared to some of the other films we've seen, the storyline felt a little more concrete than some of the other ones.
7:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was definitely a very like story-driven one.
7:20
SPEAKER_00: I liked the risk taking in it.
7:22
SPEAKER_00: I thought, I think I said this in my review on scary moviepod.com slash reviews, but I think for like a teen haunting slasher demon movie like it was, I thought they didn't play it safe.
7:38
SPEAKER_00: They used a lot of nudity, which is always exciting when people don't like, you know, it just felt a little more natural the way you were just seeing things, and it was really funny sometimes the way the way they would point to the nudity.
7:51
SPEAKER_00: And the same thing with the gore, they didn't hold back on that, and sometimes they used it for humor, and sometimes they used it for a more emotional effect.
8:00
SPEAKER_00: And uh, yeah, they really they got their point across, and I think it's a great movie to like watch with some friends.
8:07
SPEAKER_00: It's definitely like a group communal movie to watch.
8:11
SPEAKER_00: Uh I think that would probably be a better time than watching it by yourself.
8:16
SPEAKER_01: Dare I say someone that would maybe watch um, and they're not the same movie, but like a happy death day, yeah.
8:25
SPEAKER_01: May also enjoy this movie.
8:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you could watch that kind of in a marathon.
8:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:30
SPEAKER_00: I think in my review, I might have also pointed to Jennifer's body, and um I think I might have said something about the chilling adventures of Sabrina.
8:40
SPEAKER_00: You know, just kind of like a a spooky but mostly funny, just good time.
8:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:46
SPEAKER_00: Something you could put on, like, if you were having like a Halloween party.
8:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh a movie that I saw that was actually the opening night screening for the festival was called The Beach House.
8:59
SPEAKER_00: It was written and directed by Jeffrey A.
9:01
SPEAKER_00: Brown and stars Liana Liberato and Noah LeGrosse.
9:06
SPEAKER_00: This movie was uh like uh the about these two college, this aged kids, a couple, they go to a beach house, the guy's uh family home, and when they get there, there's some other people there.
9:20
SPEAKER_00: And uh it's all just a little strange and unsettling, and there's like kind of a um, without spoiling too much, like a monster alien, or maybe like uh some sort of unknown contamination threat going on.
9:38
SPEAKER_00: And I actually went to see it and I thought when it started it was going to be just a very like atmospheric, creepy drama type thing, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much it took off and got really exciting.
9:52
SPEAKER_00: You know, it spoke to kind of trust and fearing the people around you and um isolation and things like that.
10:01
SPEAKER_00: And actually, it was picked up by Shudder, so it will be streaming, I believe, next year at some point, which is very exciting because I thought this was a very good movie and a very fun way to kick off the uh festival.
10:17
SPEAKER_02: So we just watched a movie called Girl on the Third Floor.
10:21
SPEAKER_02: It was written and directed by Travis Stevens and actually based on a story by Paul John Stone and Ben Parker.
10:29
SPEAKER_02: It stars Phil Brooks.
10:31
SPEAKER_00: He also is a former former WWE fighter whose name was uh CM Punk.
10:39
SPEAKER_01: Also formerly a John Hammond personator.
10:43
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, he looks like a few people.
10:45
SPEAKER_00: All the reviews I was reading was talking about him looking like Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead, and uh I definitely not the one y'all saw, uh the ridge, and I definitely saw that connection.
10:57
SPEAKER_02: For me, he had like some good moments that really stood out.
11:02
SPEAKER_02: But interesting that he was a WWE fighter.
11:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he wasly in tattoos, lots of tattoos, yeah.
11:14
SPEAKER_02: Um it also stars Tristy Trieste?
11:22
SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's uh uh it looks beautiful.
11:25
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to say it.
11:27
SPEAKER_02: Um Treesty Kelly Dunn and also Sarah Brooks.
11:32
SPEAKER_02: Any relations to Phil Brooks?
11:35
SPEAKER_01: Fact check it.
11:36
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
11:37
SPEAKER_00: We'll just like put it out into the world and say, what a fun idea.
11:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
11:42
SPEAKER_00: No facts.
11:43
SPEAKER_02: Or a funny coincidence, if yeah, you know.
11:45
SPEAKER_02: Either way, very fun.
11:47
SPEAKER_01: How would I summarize this movie?
11:50
SPEAKER_01: A man and a woman purchase a home.
11:54
SPEAKER_02: A young, expecting couple purchases a home in somewhere in New England.
12:01
SPEAKER_02: Um take it away and that's all.
12:04
SPEAKER_02: What's happening?
12:05
SPEAKER_02: He got mad at me for taking over.
12:07
SPEAKER_01: So a man and a woman, they buy a home, uh, they leave what I recall the city to get into the suburbs, and uh the man, the husband, I guess we could call him, is uh there before the wife, getting the home ready, and the wife is pregnant, and um you know, but really he starts the renovations and starts figuring out some of the let's call them warts of the house.
12:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, some oois and gooeys.
12:40
SPEAKER_01: And the warts start to wreak havoc on his life, and uh from there it just um escalates.
12:50
SPEAKER_02: But there's also a woman.
12:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a mysterious seductress, there's a few like kind of nosy neighbor types, and uh yeah, this house seems to have some um some elements that are not typical, like some goo coming out of the walls and some uh strange naked paintings and um marbles.
13:18
SPEAKER_00: Interesting arguments.
13:19
SPEAKER_00: Marbles everywhere.
13:21
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, the the house is kind of um you know, throwing back at him everything that he's doing in the renovation.
13:30
SPEAKER_00: Every action that he takes kind of then has some sort of consequence.
13:36
SPEAKER_00: Uh, what'd y'all think of Girl on the Third Floor?
13:39
SPEAKER_01: There there were some there were some good moments.
13:42
SPEAKER_02: I think the concept was there.
13:44
SPEAKER_02: I needed a few more connective layers.
13:48
SPEAKER_02: I mean, like they tried to wrap all of these like weird things up in the end and why they were happening, but it didn't really get a full follow-through.
13:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would agree.
13:59
SPEAKER_00: I thought they were pretty on the nose about their themes, about like uh masculinity and kind of the macho ego over a woman.
14:09
SPEAKER_00: And uh especially a few things with a church and a priest next door about uh the kind of consequences of sin.
14:17
SPEAKER_00: I agree with Caroline that I think they were throwing things out and not wrapping them up in the story well enough.
14:24
SPEAKER_00: So I liked the questions being asked.
14:26
SPEAKER_00: I thought it was funny, but sometimes the humor didn't match what had previously been done.
14:33
SPEAKER_00: A movie with good intentions and a good start that just didn't know how to how to quit.
14:39
unknown: Yeah.
14:40
SPEAKER_02: I feel like it either could have been a short film or like kind of reinvigorated with some smaller storylines and connective elements and be taken to the next level.
14:55
SPEAKER_02: Where it was living was a little wishy-washy to me.
14:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially the ending, I thought really kind of got out of control.
15:02
SPEAKER_00: And while I still thought there was humor and the ridiculousness, I it was just I just want I it was it was exhausting by the end.
15:12
SPEAKER_00: Girl on the third floor won the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Prize for best gooey effects, which is that is that a thing created for them.
15:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they uh they won the prize.
15:24
SPEAKER_00: I don't know how many people were in the running for that prize.
15:28
SPEAKER_00: They also sponsored the prize.
15:30
SPEAKER_00: No, they did not.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they won it.
15:32
SPEAKER_00: And you know, I can't argue with it.
15:35
SPEAKER_00: No, they had a lot of goo.
15:36
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think they won that.
15:37
SPEAKER_00: They had a lot of goo.
15:38
SPEAKER_00: And this is one that you can watch right now.
15:42
SPEAKER_00: It is on VOD.
15:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you can rent it.
15:46
SPEAKER_00: Oh.
15:47
SPEAKER_00: All right.
15:48
SPEAKER_00: Another one that I saw, uh, it was the centerpiece film of the festival, and actually, very exciting.
15:54
SPEAKER_00: I got to interview the director and co-writer Adam Egent Mortimer, and the co-writer and the writer of the novel that it's based on, Brian DeLue.
16:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh, it was called Daniel Isn't Real.
16:06
SPEAKER_00: And I saw it last Friday at Long Island University.
16:12
SPEAKER_00: They have a little theater there in Brooklyn, and it stars Miles Robbins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Sasha Lane.
16:20
SPEAKER_00: It was a very interesting uh and beautifully crafted film with some like strong uh stylistic elements.
16:29
SPEAKER_00: It's from the producer, Spectre Vision of Mandy, and you can read more about it in my interview that'll come out or that came out, I guess, last week.
16:37
SPEAKER_00: Read it now on scaremoviepod.com slash reviews.
16:41
SPEAKER_00: But the same producers of Mandy and the creators of this film had not seen Mandy yet.
16:47
SPEAKER_00: So I think really interesting style, really unique and original, especially considering they hadn't seen Mandy, which I think has some s uh similarities.
16:57
SPEAKER_00: Basically, it's about a young man who is struggling with mental health, and he remembers uh or kind of unleashes a childhood imaginary friend, and what starts as like a good kind of healthy outlet for some of his issues becomes kind of an internal struggle uh with himself against kind of his darker urges.
17:26
SPEAKER_00: And I thought it was a really incredible film conceptually.
17:30
SPEAKER_00: I thought it really made me think and chew on things, and I think uh I d I thought of it as Joker Done Right, because I think that film uh struggled to grasp its concept and its topic, and this is how it should have been done with complexity and layers and thought and care and a little bit of tenderness.
17:54
SPEAKER_00: And uh Joker, you know, is a little a little uh fast and furious with what it's doing and a little careless.
18:03
SPEAKER_00: This film won the Brooklyn Horror Film Fest award for best picture and best director, and I would highly, highly recommend it.
18:11
SPEAKER_00: It will be out on video on demand December 6th, and it was also picked up by Shudder and will be streaming, I believe, in 2020.
18:20
SPEAKER_00: So that's how you can watch that bad boy not too long from now, and definitely, definitely worth it.
18:26
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, I want to watch it.
18:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
18:28
SPEAKER_01: I wanna see it.
18:30
SPEAKER_00: Alright, give us the facts for VFW.
18:35
SPEAKER_01: VFW was directed by Joe Bagos, written by Max Braulier, and Matthew McCardell, starring Stephen Lang, George Went, William Sadler, Martin Koe, David Patrick Kelly, and Fred Williamson.
18:57
SPEAKER_00: This was the closing screening of the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
19:01
SPEAKER_00: Caroline, we went to it together.
19:03
SPEAKER_00: How would you explain what VFW is about?
19:09
SPEAKER_02: Um, so VFW stands just as an educational piece for veterans of foreign war, and there's like lots of those locations, basically like a bar for veterans to hang out in.
19:24
SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that going into it, so neither did I.
19:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
19:27
SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's like very exclusive, like only veterans can get in.
19:32
SPEAKER_01: Exclues.
19:33
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
19:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't know what to do.
19:37
SPEAKER_02: Basically, the movie is like kind of in this like I I would say like extreme version of the current world, maybe futuristic, kind of like an alternate world.
19:52
SPEAKER_02: Um, and basically like everyone, all the young ones are addicted to a kind of drug that makes you crazy.
20:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh but also like at times like it seemed like they were at times, yeah, very much zombie.
20:11
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was it felt like it could have been a zombie apocalypse movie, but it wasn't.
20:17
SPEAKER_02: It was like this drug lord thing.
20:20
SPEAKER_02: Um, so basically the veterans are living their own lives, but it's very close to where this is all happening.
20:25
SPEAKER_02: And one of the uh drug addicts steals a large amount of the drugs that's supposed to like sustain the whole community for their fix for a very long time and runs into the bar.
20:40
SPEAKER_02: And so all of the other like drug addicts start attacking the bar and the veterans go ham.
20:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
20:49
SPEAKER_00: I would say going in, I actually was not excited to see this movie because I was like, ugh, what masculine energy.
20:56
SPEAKER_00: I don't have the patience for this, just like we're bros, we fought in a war, and it was pretty rad.
21:04
SPEAKER_02: I still like it's definitely like not my type of movie that I would like to watch, nor would I, you know, we kind of stick to on our own curation of these movies, kind of like a scary side, but this was just kind of like a gore.
21:21
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very relentless gore.
21:23
SPEAKER_00: Although you saw you see everything, a lot of trauma to the body, yeah, and the brain.
21:29
SPEAKER_02: Lots of blood and and goo and guns.
21:33
SPEAKER_00: But not in the best goo.
21:34
SPEAKER_00: Lots of yeah, not the best goo there.
21:36
SPEAKER_02: Second best goo from VFW.
21:39
SPEAKER_02: Um the music was really notable, I think.
21:43
SPEAKER_02: I loved this the score.
21:45
SPEAKER_00: I almost would describe it as just like an hour and a half music video.
21:49
SPEAKER_00: It's very striking, like the colors and the framing, and along with like this strong, very narrative score, uh, it does feel very Very uh artistic in its creation.
22:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
22:03
SPEAKER_02: Also, Stephen Lang, if you didn't know, he is the blind man in Don't Breathe.
22:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
22:10
SPEAKER_02: So And he was there and at the after party and um they did a panel afterwards and and chatted.
22:19
SPEAKER_02: What I side not connected to that.
22:22
SPEAKER_02: I think it's worth mentioning that this we discussed this after the fact, but it could have been taken on a very like far left or right stance on politics, but I think it did a nice job of portraying veterans in a a a good light, no matter where you stand there.
22:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was we I think agreed that we felt it was kind of apolitical, that it kind of existed uh outside of that, and that uh it I felt like it was more of just an unconventional war movie about like brotherhood and fraternity and relationships.
23:02
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I do think it's a little bit of uh critical of youth, but uh, you know, who isn't these days?
23:10
SPEAKER_00: All of these actors are big, have big legacies in uh horror and kind of B movies, and uh they're all faces that, you know, if you have some some sort of uh history with watching uh horror movies from the past, you might recognize a lot of them.
23:31
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I really enjoyed it as well.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: It also it won the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Award for Best Actor for the entire crew, uh the whole ensemble, and also won the Audience Pick Award.
23:44
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
23:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
23:46
SPEAKER_02: It was there there were more funny moments than I thought there would be.
23:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and very effective uh character development.
23:54
SPEAKER_00: I really felt like I cared and enjoyed uh cared for and enjoyed all these uh older gentlemen and hoped that they all would make it out, even if perhaps they didn't.
24:06
SPEAKER_01: Would you guys watch it again?
24:09
SPEAKER_02: I would because we sat on the second row in a very large movie theater and some of the images were very I could tell beautiful, but it was uh hard to take it all in.
24:21
SPEAKER_02: I think being able to to sit back and watch it again would be nice.
24:26
SPEAKER_00: I think it is it would be another fun movie to put on in a crowd, like have going at a party.
24:33
SPEAKER_00: Um because I wouldn't choose to just watch it on my own anytime soon, but that's not to diminish my recommendation.
24:43
SPEAKER_00: I do recommend this movie.
24:44
SPEAKER_00: I think it was great, especially if you're into kind of over-the-top gore and action horror hybrids.
24:53
SPEAKER_00: Um which I am.
24:55
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
24:55
SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't I don't I don't think Ian I don't know if you would enjoy this film.
25:00
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
25:01
SPEAKER_00: Of the movies we have watched, I would say that the violence is comparable to uh Evil Dead 2013, uh, which you uh did not enjoy.
25:11
SPEAKER_01: But I like like brotherhoody movies.
25:15
SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe you would.
25:16
SPEAKER_00: You like that Amazon action show that I haven't seen, so I don't know why.
25:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is it similar to that?
25:21
SPEAKER_00: Like action.
25:22
SPEAKER_02: No, not at all.
25:23
SPEAKER_00: But like I think the action style, you know, we watched The Born Identity together.
25:27
SPEAKER_00: It's it's much more gory than that, but I mean it's a similar style of like like buckling down and teaming up to kind of take down a larger bad.
25:39
SPEAKER_01: So I think in concept, I can let you guys know.
25:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh that is a big old TBD.
25:45
SPEAKER_00: If uh yeah, if if we have not mentioned when you can watch these movies, uh, just stay tuned.
25:52
SPEAKER_00: And a good place to start is you can check out like some of the directors' uh Twitters because I know a lot of them are on Twitter.
26:02
SPEAKER_00: I think most of the movies we've talked about, the directors are on Twitter.
26:05
SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm keeping up with it.
26:07
SPEAKER_00: Uh, if we have written work about any of these movies on scary moviepod.com slash reviews, then I will try and update them when that information comes out.
26:16
SPEAKER_00: But unfortunately, that is not the case for all of these movies.
26:19
SPEAKER_00: Such as I know porno has a distributor, but I do not uh I could not find any information about when or how it would be distributed.
26:29
SPEAKER_01: TBD.
26:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
26:32
SPEAKER_00: More movies that I saw personally that I want to highly recommend.
26:36
SPEAKER_00: One was called Spiral.
26:38
SPEAKER_00: It was directed by Curtis David Harter and written by Colin Minahan and John Polliquin.
26:44
SPEAKER_00: It stars Jeffrey Boyer, Chapman, Eric Cohen, Jennifer Laporte, and Lachlan Monroe.
26:50
SPEAKER_00: And it is one of the LGBT offerings from the festival that I wrote about in our LGBT wrap-up of the festival.
26:59
SPEAKER_00: It's about a gay couple who moves to a small town from the city in the mid-90s with their daughter.
27:06
SPEAKER_00: And uh one of the husbands is still a little bit traumatized from a hate crime he experienced when he was younger and starts uh becoming paranoid about maybe uh the town's intentions and their acceptance of them.
27:24
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to say too much because some of the buzzwords I've heard going around about this movie, while appealing, I think are a little bit spoilery.
27:32
SPEAKER_00: So that's all I want to say.
27:33
SPEAKER_00: It's a really great study of oppression.
27:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh if you enjoy seeing LGBT people on screen, I highly recommend it.
27:43
SPEAKER_00: It's nice to see the diversity.
27:45
SPEAKER_00: Uh, also, I think some strong themes about trust and struggling with trusting others and yourself, and make some really interesting statements about uh humanity's inherent fears and hatred, uh, as well as people who are outcasts' desires to fit in and blend in with the larger crowd.
28:04
SPEAKER_00: I think it's a really, really cool movie, really well done.
28:07
SPEAKER_00: Acting, 10 out of 10, production, great.
28:10
SPEAKER_00: I think it really creeps in with some paranoia and uh dread.
28:16
SPEAKER_00: I really loved it, cannot recommend it enough.
28:19
SPEAKER_00: It was an awesome movie.
28:23
SPEAKER_00: So, over the seven days that I was at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, I saw 16 movies.
28:28
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
28:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he didn't even come home.
28:31
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I just lived at the theater.
28:34
SPEAKER_00: Uh I saw a lot of good stuff.
28:36
SPEAKER_00: I saw quite a few things I did not care for.
28:39
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it was an overall a good time.
28:42
SPEAKER_00: A lot of the screenings were paired with QA's from some of the creators or the actors or things like that.
28:49
SPEAKER_00: So it was really interesting getting to get that behind the scenes look and be able to ask questions if I had them to the people in charge.
28:58
SPEAKER_01: What's going to haunt your dreams about the Brooklyn Horror Festival?
29:03
SPEAKER_00: Oh, just that uh it's over.
29:06
SPEAKER_00: Of course.
29:07
SPEAKER_02: The psychic readings at the opening party.
29:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and in fact, Caroline, we did both go to the opening launch party and the closing Fingoria party.
29:16
SPEAKER_00: What would you uh say about those parties?
29:18
SPEAKER_00: They're pretty fun.
29:19
SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, the most memorable thing was that they had a free psychic there to read my palm.
29:25
SPEAKER_01: And then you didn't remember the rest of the night.
29:28
SPEAKER_02: No.
29:30
SPEAKER_00: Tell us what'd she tell you?
29:33
SPEAKER_02: Uh she told me a lot of things that were spot on.
29:36
SPEAKER_02: It was um I had never gotten my palm read before, but would recommend.
29:43
SPEAKER_02: I had been wanting to do it for a while.
29:46
SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
29:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I enjoyed it as well.
29:48
SPEAKER_00: And while I didn't have as moving an experience as you did, uh it was still cool because it had been a goal.
29:56
SPEAKER_02: Ate some free um free cheese and crackers, you know, good stuff.
30:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and also really fun to just be around other horror lovers or people working in horror and get to chat with uh other people about it besides you, Dweebs.
30:11
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, nice change of pace.
30:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there was a point when um we had like a little group that we were hanging out with at the end party, and they had all these like classic films being played on the walls, projectors, but kind of like mixed and mashed up, like to match kind of the DJ.
30:33
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and uh at a certain point I like turned to a a girl there and I was like, What is this?
30:40
SPEAKER_00: And she was like, Oh, that's this movie, and oh that's that movie, and I was like, I had no idea that these were popular Yeah, she was getting excited because they were playing things like Nasferat to and House on Haunted Hill and stuff like that, and she kept just everything that came up, even the obscurest image, she could tell us what it was.
30:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was very impressed.
30:59
SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is a whole world that I clearly know nothing about.
31:03
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you know, learning every day, we all are.
31:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, the closing party was uh right after the screening of VFW, and there were uh Stephen Lang went to the party for a minute, and there were people from Fingoria and Shutter, and like it was a pretty exciting crowd to be in.
31:22
SPEAKER_00: There were some good flatbreads, and um I didn't have any of the meatballs, but I would have loved some of those meatballs.
31:30
SPEAKER_02: Uh speaking of goo, I did see some of the meatballs regurgitated, so it was a great party for someone.
31:36
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some people turned up at that party.
31:39
SPEAKER_02: I don't know who it was, but it was pretty early on in the party, and I mean if how late would you have said it?
31:46
SPEAKER_00: Like 10 p.m.
31:47
SPEAKER_00: and there was vomit on the party.
31:50
SPEAKER_02: I was like, there's meatballs here somewhere.
31:54
SPEAKER_01: The worst part of the night was when you guys got home and you woke me up in the middle of the night.
31:59
SPEAKER_02: I got the hiccups on the way home.
32:01
SPEAKER_01: I'm so wasted hiccups.
32:05
SPEAKER_02: I'm I can't even 3 a.m.
32:07
SPEAKER_01: hiccups.
32:08
SPEAKER_02: You should have been, you know, comforting me, patting my back, but instead you were just like, go sleep in the living room.
32:16
SPEAKER_00: Aww.
32:17
SPEAKER_00: Well, all that to just say, it was a really fun time.
32:20
SPEAKER_00: And like I said at the top, uh, I would highly recommend a film festival, uh a horror film festival if you can.
32:26
SPEAKER_00: Like they're there, you can find them in your area.
32:29
SPEAKER_00: And um just be on the lookout because I think it's totally worth it.
32:33
SPEAKER_00: Even if you can't get like a pass or a badge, like buying tickets one at a time, uh it's it's a good deal.
32:41
SPEAKER_01: Support local filmmakers.
32:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, you're supporting so many people by doing you're supporting independent filmmakers and independent horror, you're supporting uh like local theaters, you're supporting the festival, which if it's you know, like I said, a small one near you, then that's also an independent venture.
33:01
SPEAKER_01: Let's just do a quick round of applause for all the people involved in all of it.
33:06
SPEAKER_00: Well, you know who specifically I want to like give some attention to?
33:10
SPEAKER_00: Uh independent horror publications, like what's your favorite scary movie?
33:17
SPEAKER_00: It was really excited to be invited to do this and get to report on it for uh for our podcast.
33:24
SPEAKER_00: And even though this episode's kind of a clusterfuck, like it was still a great time, and I'm glad that I got to see stuff that we could then relay to our listeners.
33:36
SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah.
33:37
SPEAKER_02: Lightning round, smash or slash.
33:40
SPEAKER_02: Just for Parker, because he saw so many movies.
33:43
SPEAKER_00: Um, give me a drum or a cheer.
33:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
33:50
SPEAKER_02: Alright, here we go.
33:51
SPEAKER_02: Are you ready?
33:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
33:53
SPEAKER_02: Three, two, one.
33:55
SPEAKER_02: The beach house.
33:56
SPEAKER_02: Smash.
33:57
SPEAKER_02: Daniel isn't real.
33:58
SPEAKER_02: Smash.
33:58
SPEAKER_02: Blood quantum.
33:59
SPEAKER_00: Slash.
34:00
SPEAKER_02: One bedroom.
34:01
SPEAKER_00: Like a very unenthusiastic smash.
34:05
SPEAKER_02: Sick, sick, sick.
34:06
SPEAKER_00: Oh, hard slash.
34:07
SPEAKER_02: Slade exclamation point.
34:09
SPEAKER_00: Oh, the LGBT shorts, smash, they were so fun.
34:13
SPEAKER_02: The room.
34:16
SPEAKER_00: Lightning road.
34:17
SPEAKER_00: Coming to Shutter soon.
34:19
SPEAKER_00: I will give it a like first half of the movie smash, second half, like a less enthusiastic smash.
34:25
SPEAKER_00: Overall.
34:26
SPEAKER_00: Sad, not very fun leaving slash slash.
34:30
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
34:31
SPEAKER_02: Uh Carmilla?
34:33
SPEAKER_00: Another just like, I want to smash it, but I think I have to slash it.
34:39
SPEAKER_02: Spiral.
34:40
SPEAKER_00: Oh, smash.
34:41
SPEAKER_02: The FW.
34:42
SPEAKER_02: Smash.
34:42
SPEAKER_02: The Yellow Knight.
34:44
SPEAKER_00: Oh, if I've ever given something a slash, this is the slash of all slashes.
34:51
SPEAKER_00: Not to uh hurt any feelings.
34:54
SPEAKER_00: People put time and money or time and craft and artistry into it.
34:58
SPEAKER_00: Uh it was not all bad, but it was not for me.
35:02
SPEAKER_02: Uh this is our home.
35:03
SPEAKER_00: Smash.
35:04
SPEAKER_02: Porno.
35:05
SPEAKER_00: Smash.
35:06
SPEAKER_02: Girl on the third floor.
35:09
SPEAKER_00: Slash.
35:10
SPEAKER_02: The swerve.
35:13
SPEAKER_00: It was that's an emotionally punishing movie.
35:16
SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give it a smash, but it's a toughie.
35:18
SPEAKER_02: And Seder.
35:20
SPEAKER_00: Smash.
35:21
SPEAKER_02: I tried to watch that one and I dipped out.
35:24
SPEAKER_00: We started Seder together, and yeah, you did dip out because it's a slow, a slow start, but once it gets there, it gets there.
35:34
SPEAKER_01: That's like saying, you know, the TV show is great.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: You just have to make it through the first three episodes.
35:39
SPEAKER_00: Which, yeah, I hate that because I think why do you think that you deserve for us to spend three episodes getting to know something?
35:47
SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, while I did really enjoy Seder and where it went, I it I also don't think that the build was necessarily uh very profoundly connected to the climax.
36:00
SPEAKER_00: The climax was great, the build was but I did really enjoy it in the end and beautiful, some lush imagery from Yosemite in California.
36:10
SPEAKER_00: So overall, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, smash.
36:14
SPEAKER_00: Smash.
36:15
SPEAKER_02: Pumpkin smash.
36:18
SPEAKER_02: Also, this is my birthday episode, so Oh yeah.
36:21
SPEAKER_00: Happy birthday on uh the first, so that would have been last Friday.
36:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
36:26
SPEAKER_00: Awww.
36:27
SPEAKER_00: Happy birthday to you.
36:30
SPEAKER_00: Happy birthday to you.
36:31
SPEAKER_01: Have you chosen your insurance yet?
36:34
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a big two six for me.
36:36
SPEAKER_00: We have not yet celebrated, but looking into the future and for listeners of the past, what would you say you want to do for your birthday?
36:45
SPEAKER_00: Or that we did do for your birthday?
36:49
SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't want to say because Ian has something planned already, so I don't know.
36:53
SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
36:54
SPEAKER_00: I wasn't invited to the surprise party, so I'm already pissed about that.
36:57
SPEAKER_02: No, we're gonna get dressed up and go get um cocktails.
37:01
SPEAKER_00: Spooky.
37:02
SPEAKER_00: Well, Ian, you've seen porno and girl on the third floor.
37:05
SPEAKER_00: Caroline, you've seen those two, and um VFW.
37:10
SPEAKER_00: I've seen a couple of things.
37:13
SPEAKER_00: Any changes to our favorite scary movies?
37:18
SPEAKER_00: Nope.
37:18
SPEAKER_02: Yes, Halloween.
37:20
SPEAKER_01: No, no changes.
37:21
SPEAKER_01: Halloween is definitely still my favorite scary movie this season.
37:27
SPEAKER_00: I think my favorite scary movie.
37:31
SPEAKER_00: I'm struggling back and forth because when I saw Daniel Isn't Real, I thought this is my new favorite scary movie for season two.
37:39
SPEAKER_00: But when I watched Spiral the other day, I was like, no, this is my new favorite scary movie.
37:44
SPEAKER_00: But I watched Daniel Isn't Real over a week ago, and so like I'm trying to remember.
37:50
SPEAKER_00: I think I'm going to say my favorite scary movie so far, season two, is Daniel Isn't Real.
37:58
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
37:58
SPEAKER_00: And look out for our interview with Adam Egypt Mortimer and Brian DeLue, the creators of Daniel Isn't Real.
