Sam: Hey there, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're digging into a book called Think This, Not That by Dr. Josh Axe. Sophie, you and I both read this one, and I have to say, it kind of messed with my head in a good way. What did you make of it?
• 0:18
Sophie: Sam, it's so good to be here. This book is a game changer, honestly. It's all about how our thoughts aren't just fleeting things in our heads. They're actually biological forces that shape our bodies and our health. And Dr. Axe gives us these simple swaps, like thinking this instead of that, to rewire our whole system.
• 0:39
Sam: Yeah, and the first swap he talks about is moving from fear to faith. And I'm not gonna lie, when I first read that, I thought he meant something religious. But it's not really about that.
• 0:52
Sophie: Right, it's more about trust. Fear puts your body into that fight or flight mode, flooding you with cortisol. And that's fine for short bursts, but living in constant fear, it's devastating. It weakens your immune system, messes with your sleep, even speeds up aging.
• 1:10
Sam: So the alternative, faith, it's about believing in a positive outcome. And that switches you into what he calls the rest and digest state, where your body can actually heal and repair itself. The practical step he suggests is pretty wild.
• 1:27
Sophie: Oh, you mean when a fearful thought pops up, you just replace it with a statement of faith?
• 1:32
Sam: Exactly. Like instead of thinking, I'm afraid I'm gonna get sick, you think, my body is strong and my immune system is resilient. It's not denying reality. You're just choosing which reality to feed.
• 1:46
Sophie: And that sets the stage for the next big swap, which is about identity. He says we need to move from a victim mentality to a creator mentality.
• 1:54
Sam: Oh, I love this one. A victim thinks life happens to them. They're just a passenger. But a creator, they realize they can't control everything, but they can control how they respond.
• 2:06
Sophie: It's the difference between asking, why is this happening to me? And asking, what can I learn from this? That one question shifts your brain into problem solving mode.
• 2:17
Sam: He uses this great analogy. You can be a thermometer that just reflects the temperature of the room. Or you can be a thermostat that actually sets it.
• 2:26
Sophie: That's such a powerful image. And then he gets into how we relate to time, and I felt personally attacked by this one.
• 2:34
Sam: Wait, is this the urgency versus patience thing? Because I was like, hey, I'm just efficient.
• 2:40
Sophie: Right, but he calls it hurry sickness. We're always rushing, trying to do more, and it's a huge source of stress. But patience isn't passive. It's an active trust that important things, health, relationships, they can't be rushed.
• 2:56
Sam: So instead of making hasty decisions and burning out, you create space for things to unfold naturally. I guess that means I should stop trying to speed read this book.
• 3:06
Sophie: Probably. And speaking of things that stress us out, he talks about comparison thinking. In the age of social media, it's so easy to measure our lives against everyone else's highlight reel.
• 3:18
Sam: And that just leads to envy and feeling inadequate. The antidote is gratitude. He says to start each day by listing three things you're thankful for. It's simple, but it trains your brain to scan for positives instead of threats.
• 3:34
Sophie: I actually started doing that after I read this, and it's kind of amazing. But the part that got me was the section on resentment. He says holding onto a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.
• 3:48
Sam: Yeah, that's a brutal line. And it's true. Resentment keeps your body inflamed, which is a root cause of so many diseases. The swap is forgiveness, and it's not about saying what they did was okay.
• 4:01
Sophie: It's a gift to yourself. You're saying, I'm no longer willing to carry this weight. And forgiveness has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve immune function. It's powerful medicine.
• 4:13
Sam: And then there's anxiety, which often comes from worrying about the future. He calls it future tripping. The alternative is presence, being in the here and now.
• 4:24
Sophie: Because the present moment is the only place where life actually happens. When you're anxious, you're living in a mental fiction. Deep breathing or mindful walking can pull you back to safety.
• 4:35
Sam: It calms the amygdala, that fear center in your brain, so your rational side can take the lead. He also challenges our obsession with busyness. We wear exhaustion like a badge of honor.
• 4:47
Sophie: But he says we need to swap being a human doing for a human being. Rest is a biological necessity, not a luxury. It's not just sleeping, it's doing things that restore you, like being in nature or connecting with loved ones.
• 5:02
Sam: And when you do that, you operate from fullness instead of depletion. You're actually more creative and effective in your work. I've definitely felt that.
• 5:12
Sophie: He also has this great section about how we view our bodies. Instead of seeing them as machines that break down or enemies to be controlled, he says to have reverence for them.
• 5:23
Sam: Yeah, because your body is a living, intelligent system with an incredible capacity for healing. When you treat it with kindness, you nourish it and move it to celebrate its strength, not to punish it.
• 5:38
Sophie: That shift from criticism to gratitude is so much more effective than any restrictive diet. And then he talks about the power of community, which I think is so overlooked.
• 5:49
Sam: The lone wolf mentality, thinking you can do it all on your own, that's a recipe for isolation and burnout. But we're wired for connection. Having a supportive community is one of the biggest predictors of health and longevity.
• 6:04
Sophie: When you share your burdens, they get lighter. And when you celebrate with others, your joy multiplies. It lowers inflammation and boosts your immune system.
• 6:15
Sam: And finally, he says the most important swap of all is moving from a life lived for yourself to a life lived for a purpose greater than yourself. That's the whole ballgame, isn't it?
• 6:27
Sophie: It really is. The modern world says to accumulate more, but that scarcity mindset never satisfies. The alternative is contribution, shifting from what can I get to what can I give.
• 6:39
Sam: And that sense of meaning and purpose protects against depression and even extends your lifespan. I mean, this whole book is basically saying your thoughts are the most powerful medicine or the most potent poison you'll ever consume.
• 6:53
Sophie: Exactly. And it's not about superficial positive thinking. It's about recognizing that choosing your thoughts changes your biology. You're shifting from a state of stress to a state of growth and repair.
• 7:06
Sam: The work is simple, but it's not easy. It takes constant vigilance. But the reward is transforming your health and your entire experience of life. The choice, as he puts it, is stark and clear.
• 7:20
Sophie: You can keep thinking thoughts that make you sick, or you can choose thoughts that make you whole.
