- 0:44Speaker 2: She's on the Money. She's on the Money. Hello and
- 1:08Speaker 2: welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast that's here
- 1:10Speaker 2: to help you live your best life without blowing the budget.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm excited and if you're like me, living your best
- 1:15Speaker 2: life definitely includes travel ideally, but let's be honest.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We just got back from Thailand, so clearly.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Yeah, holidays can get very expensive. Very quickly they can.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So today I'm joined as always by our go to
- 1:29Speaker 2: for all things finance, Victoria Devine, to figure out how
- 1:32Speaker 2: we can see the world without draining our bank accounts.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I mean you could also drain your bank account, no judgment,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you could, Yeah, I just I don't know. Like what
- 1:40Speaker 3: you do with your money is actually none of my business.
- 1:42Speaker 3: My job is to give you all the tools on
- 1:43Speaker 3: me sources so that you can make a decision that's
- 1:45Speaker 3: right for you. And if draining your bank account is
- 1:47Speaker 3: in line with your valleys pop off queen. Absolutely ideally
- 1:52Speaker 3: you've got some money to come home to, because I
- 1:54Speaker 3: love a bit of financial stability. Oh, I just think
- 1:57Speaker 3: that that is the responsible thing. And sometimes I think
- 2:00Speaker 3: we need to put our big girl socks on and
- 2:02Speaker 3: get our emergency fund set up because.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know what our future, you deserves that. Yeah, that's
- 2:06Speaker 2: so true.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Like you just feel so much more financially secure when
- 2:10Speaker 3: you've got some cash in the bank.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It feels so good. I've right never really been in
- 2:15Speaker 2: that position except for when I like, oh, I'll go
- 2:17Speaker 2: to fel thousand dollars in your shares is Yeah, it
- 2:20Speaker 2: feels good. It really feels good. So I feel like
- 2:22Speaker 2: we could all do it.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And we get so many messages from our community, especially
- 2:27Speaker 3: our younger members, asking r V is like travel a
- 2:31Speaker 3: really bad money goal. No, experiencely, please, memory please? Like
- 2:36Speaker 3: any goal that's in line with your values is a
- 2:38Speaker 3: good goal. Yes, And the research is pretty clear that
- 2:41Speaker 3: spending on experiences actually makes us happier than spending on things.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So I reckon, that's that's good enough for me. I'm
- 2:48Speaker 3: going to go back to Bali. So it's not about
- 2:51Speaker 3: skipping travel. I think it's actually just about being smart
- 2:54Speaker 3: with it. Like I just don't want to see you
- 2:57Speaker 3: in thirty thousand dollars worth of personal debt and then
- 2:59Speaker 3: going but I.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Deserve a holiday.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'm so sorry, grow up, Like we've got to get together, beck, Yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 3: because you deserve more than that, Like future you needs
- 3:09Speaker 3: financial security, but also future you deserves to go to Bali.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Future you deserves to see the world, and you can't
- 3:15Speaker 3: put yourself in that position if you keep making decisions
- 3:18Speaker 3: that put you backwards.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So he's travel bad. No, but like let's be smart. Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 3: and we can show you how to do that, which
- 3:25Speaker 3: is why today is all about sharing travel savings hacks
- 3:29Speaker 3: and tips and tricks that aren't the same boring tips
- 3:32Speaker 3: that you've heard one hundred million times. I would say,
- 3:35Speaker 3: because we've put this episode together, Beck, together together, these
- 3:39Speaker 3: are clever, lesser known ones that actually save you some
- 3:43Speaker 3: real cash.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Good. I am half excited.
- 3:46Speaker 3: But before we get into it, Beck, I want to know,
- 3:48Speaker 3: do you have a bucket list trip that you want
- 3:50Speaker 3: to go on?
- 3:51Speaker 2: They're so sweet, Vitty, I think I really want to
- 3:53Speaker 2: see the Aurora borealists.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Oh my god, me too.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Something about lights bright lights really exciting?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Yeah, hundred percent. But did you know you can see
- 4:01Speaker 3: that in Tasmania? Really?
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:04Speaker 3: I mean not the same one, but like, oh yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 3: yeah you can see la Oh my god, because I've
- 4:08Speaker 3: heard that. Like, my best friend Harriet lives in Hobart.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Sorry Harriet for just like outing where you live. But
- 4:14Speaker 3: she has sent me photos from her back deck before
- 4:16Speaker 3: of her experience and you can see it with the
- 4:18Speaker 3: naked eye. Yeah, because Tasmania doesn't have as much light
- 4:20Speaker 3: pollution as what you do it.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Okay, well cool sounds.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Like it sounds a bit cheaper, but I'm not trying
- 4:25Speaker 3: to be cheaper. But let's go on the big boushie
- 4:27Speaker 3: holiday because one day I have in my head that
- 4:30Speaker 3: I really want to go to like a Bora Bora.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And don't get me wrong, I've been on some nice holidays,
- 4:36Speaker 3: but I cannot in my head justify like a three
- 4:39Speaker 3: thousand dollars a night overwater villa thing. No, but one day,
- 4:43Speaker 3: one day, maybe when I like get enough Virgin points
- 4:45Speaker 3: or something, I will be able to go. I believe,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I just go. Imagine being in a villa that's over
- 4:51Speaker 3: water and you like look through the floor and there's fishies.
- 4:54Speaker 2: That's so cooler. That would be really amazing.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Imagine having breakfast. Oh anyway, sorry, that's where I would
- 5:02Speaker 3: like to go. God, And I don't know, there's probably
- 5:05Speaker 3: a million other places, because I do really like travel,
- 5:07Speaker 3: but like I've just kind of stepped a little bit
- 5:09Speaker 3: out of my travel era. I would say, because I
- 5:11Speaker 3: have a toddler, Yeah, I would say, limits, your choice
- 5:15Speaker 3: is a little bit, a little bit tricky. In fact,
- 5:17Speaker 3: my last holiday beck was actually based around finding a
- 5:22Speaker 3: family friendly resort, and I.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Was like, oh my god, this has like so many
- 5:25Speaker 2: kids pools.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Brilliant. The next thing I looked at was like, oh
- 5:29Speaker 3: my god, this resort I went to in Bali.
- 5:32Speaker 2: It has a petting zoo. Oh that's so cute.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Whereas I would say that past me if I was
- 5:37Speaker 3: going on like an international lag, you know, I would
- 5:40Speaker 3: say beachy holiday, I'm thinking, oh, private villa, private pool.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Now I've got a toddler. I was like, private pool
- 5:47Speaker 3: and Bali there's no pool fencing, absolutely no scary. Your
- 5:52Speaker 3: life changes a little bit, but that doesn't mean that
- 5:54Speaker 3: travels off the cards.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Beck absolutely, So what's your first tip?
- 5:57Speaker 4: All right?
- 5:57Speaker 3: So you're not going to like this because you're a
- 5:59Speaker 3: chat GPT like not fan, but if I could convince
- 6:05Speaker 3: you to save some money, I reckon you could get
- 6:06Speaker 3: on board. So we're going to actually turn to chat
- 6:08Speaker 3: GPT and be like, hey girl, yeah, can you pretend
- 6:12Speaker 3: to be my travel agent? Got you?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Okay?
- 6:14Speaker 3: And you're going to make her role play in not
- 6:16Speaker 3: a weird way. You're going to make her role play
- 6:18Speaker 3: as a travel agent. Now I know that that's probably
- 6:21Speaker 3: not very groundbreaking. You're like that, you promise good tips,
- 6:24Speaker 3: and then you said chat GPT, but I wanted to
- 6:27Speaker 3: share a few things that you could use it for
- 6:29Speaker 3: that you maybe have not used it for before. Because
- 6:31Speaker 3: like everyone knows that you could probably use chat chpt
- 6:33Speaker 3: right right, But you could ask it to find the
- 6:36Speaker 3: cheapest time to go somewhere. So you could say something like, hey,
- 6:40Speaker 3: find me the shoulder season windows for BALI that dodge
- 6:43Speaker 3: Australian school holidays, and then all of the major events,
- 6:46Speaker 3: like I would really want three days in a row
- 6:48Speaker 3: where the like flights drop the weather's really good, and
- 6:52Speaker 3: then add a sentence of why for each window. So, like,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I think something that people don't realize about chat GPT,
- 6:58Speaker 3: or you haven't used it as a incessantly as I have,
- 7:01Speaker 3: is that you can be as specific as you want,
- 7:05Speaker 3: and like, if you're not getting the answers you want,
- 7:06Speaker 3: you can like clarify okay. You could be like, oh no,
- 7:10Speaker 3: I don't like that window because it actually clashes with
- 7:13Speaker 3: my husband's birthday and we're doing something else, and then
- 7:15Speaker 3: it will like regenerate again. So you can ask it
- 7:17Speaker 3: a million questions. I'm still in a phase where I
- 7:20Speaker 3: say please and thank you. You probably don't need to,
- 7:22Speaker 3: but I feel like I don't know, I'll be polite
- 7:24Speaker 3: one day if my like chat GBT search history like
- 7:27Speaker 3: gets leaked. At least you guys are going to go
- 7:30Speaker 3: through and be like, well, you know what, Victoria was
- 7:32Speaker 3: really polite when asking that six million times, you know,
- 7:37Speaker 3: or you could find the most cost effective like airline
- 7:40Speaker 3: or flight for you, so you could compare infant and
- 7:43Speaker 3: childfair rules across like Quantas and Singapore airlines and Emirates
- 7:47Speaker 3: if you're planning on going to Italy or something. So
- 7:49Speaker 3: I want really stick totals for a family of four
- 7:53Speaker 3: with one infant who sits on my lap and a
- 7:57Speaker 3: kid aged seven and one sure, because money win, beck
- 8:01Speaker 3: And I think some people know this, but not all
- 8:03Speaker 3: people know this.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Kids under two.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Usually fly free.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 8:08Speaker 3: So like our flight to Bali, we paid for our
- 8:10Speaker 3: tickets or you know, actually got tickets on points, but
- 8:13Speaker 3: like we didn't have to pay for Harvey because he
- 8:15Speaker 3: actually sits on one of our laps.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Oh that's so good.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Money win. The second he turns to though, we're gonna
- 8:22Speaker 3: have to pay for him. And honestly, I'm not gonna lie.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And my son is quite big, Like I don't share
- 8:28Speaker 3: a lot about him, but like I would say that
- 8:30Speaker 3: when people meet him, they often say, oh my god,
- 8:33Speaker 3: like he's much bigger than I thought he would be
- 8:35Speaker 3: because he's just this is a big boy doing big Oh.
- 8:38Speaker 2: My god, it's so cute.
- 8:39Speaker 3: He's busy boy. It was a lot to have him
- 8:41Speaker 3: on my lap. So I don't know how long that
- 8:43Speaker 3: is going to go. But you can also compare like
- 8:45Speaker 3: baggage rules or like those stroller rules, and like seat
- 8:48Speaker 3: selection fees, so you can see the actual true cost
- 8:51Speaker 3: because how many times have you gone to book a
- 8:53Speaker 3: flight and then you're like, oh, one hundred and twenty
- 8:55Speaker 3: nine dollars to Sydney like money win, and then it's
- 8:57Speaker 3: like plus tax, plus baggage plus these that, and then
- 9:00Speaker 3: they ask you to make a contribution to charity and you're.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Like, right now, I just don't have the money.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I don't understand. But you can even get it to
- 9:08Speaker 3: like dig up cheaper roots or like flag budget airlines
- 9:12Speaker 3: that don't show up on the usual comparison website. So
- 9:14Speaker 3: if you go to webjet, they only like rank the
- 9:17Speaker 3: places that pay them to be on Webjet.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Got you okay?
- 9:21Speaker 3: So you can compare even more using chat GPT, And
- 9:23Speaker 3: if you're not sure what to ask ask chat GPT,
- 9:27Speaker 3: be like, hey, I don't know how to really use
- 9:29Speaker 3: you what are the questions I should ask because I
- 9:32Speaker 3: want to book a budget holiday.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I'll tell you, Oh my god, Okay, that's great.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think that my favorite thing at the moment is
- 9:40Speaker 3: you can just ask, like you can just ask and
- 9:42Speaker 3: just ask. It doesn't make you feel stupid.
- 9:44Speaker 2: No, okai, Well outside of chat GPT, if you happen
- 9:49Speaker 2: to have are there any other Yes?
- 9:51Speaker 3: There are. I'm sorry that you hate CHATTA. So these men,
- 9:55Speaker 3: I feel like you're doing a dodgy, but it's completely legal.
- 9:57Speaker 3: You're going to change your point of sale country. Okay, okay,
- 10:01Speaker 3: change your point of sale country. Yeah. So airlines don't
- 10:05Speaker 3: just like price flights because of the distance. They actually
- 10:08Speaker 3: price them by where you buy. And this is where
- 10:10Speaker 3: you could use your VPN very well. Okay, So sometimes
- 10:15Speaker 3: the exact seat costs literally hundreds of dollars less if
- 10:18Speaker 3: you book it on the airlines destination country website in
- 10:22Speaker 3: their local currency.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Oh my godd.
- 10:25Speaker 3: For example, I did a little bit of research because
- 10:28Speaker 3: I was like, all right, I need to give you
- 10:29Speaker 3: guys a good example of this. A Tokyo flight can
- 10:33Speaker 3: be a lot cheaper on the Japan version of the
- 10:36Speaker 3: airline website than the Australian one.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 10:39Speaker 3: They kind of like, oh, well, the Japanese obviously going
- 10:42Speaker 3: to fly home to Tokyo, and that's not as interesting
- 10:45Speaker 3: as someone from Australia coming on a holiday.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Are you allowed to like trans what's the word I'm
- 10:52Speaker 2: thinking of, like translate translate in English, it won't pick
- 10:56Speaker 2: up that you're.
- 10:57Speaker 3: No, but you can just put it into English and
- 11:00Speaker 3: say that you're in Japan while you're booking hairt put
- 11:02Speaker 3: your VPN there. Oh my god. And so I saw
- 11:05Speaker 3: someone online say because I looked it up, but I
- 11:07Speaker 3: saw someone online say that she and her husband flew
- 11:09Speaker 3: to Italy for seven hundred and fifty dollars return whoa
- 11:14Speaker 3: from la versus fifteen hundred dollars using this hack in
- 11:19Speaker 3: our Facebook group? Really yep, money win. So to do this,
- 11:22Speaker 3: obviously you have to make sure that you only use
- 11:25Speaker 3: like the official website, like don't just go on random
- 11:28Speaker 3: Japanese websites because like that could be like sketchy, like
- 11:32Speaker 3: no sketchy third party links. And then what we want
- 11:34Speaker 3: to do is reject pop ups like no pop ups allowed,
- 11:37Speaker 3: like you know when it pops up, so reject pop
- 11:39Speaker 3: ups that change into your own currency and then pay
- 11:42Speaker 3: with a card that doesn't have foreign exchange fees because
- 11:45Speaker 3: you don't want to get slapped with that. And then
- 11:47Speaker 3: always double check the fair rules and the baggage because
- 11:49Speaker 3: it can actually differ from market to market everything. It's
- 11:54Speaker 3: it's so annoying with airlines, but like they might have
- 11:57Speaker 3: a limit on luggage, whereas you know you get twenty
- 11:59Speaker 3: three kilos if you book from Australia.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Sure, so you just want to be careful, right, that
- 12:05Speaker 2: is so clever.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I did not know there was a thing pretange you
- 12:08Speaker 3: somewhere else.
- 12:09Speaker 2: That's so good.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Check and I mean I'm going back to chat GPT,
- 12:12Speaker 3: but you could ask them what the best fare would be.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Do I book from Japan or do I book from here?
- 12:17Speaker 2: WHOA, Okay, they won't do the hard.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Work for you.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I'm scared that, like, because you know sometimes I mean,
- 12:22Speaker 2: he I don't know if this is true or not.
- 12:23Speaker 2: But if you google a flight and then you google
- 12:25Speaker 2: it again, yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 3: That's another tipic clear cookies. But I feel like people
- 12:29Speaker 3: know that. That's why I haven't put it in as
- 12:30Speaker 3: a But if you ask your chat gypt does.
- 12:33Speaker 2: That, maybe the internet will know. I don't know how
- 12:36Speaker 2: deep it goes.
- 12:37Speaker 3: But I also always make sure that when I'm looking
- 12:40Speaker 3: up flights or like accommodation, I do it in like
- 12:42Speaker 3: an incognito brows emotely, and I like clear my cookies
- 12:45Speaker 3: because I don't want there to be a history of
- 12:47Speaker 3: me having looked it up, because it does increase They're
- 12:49Speaker 3: so sneaky. I mean, it's good for them to make
- 12:52Speaker 3: more money because they're like, oh, well, if Beck looked
- 12:54Speaker 3: at that right now and then didn't buy it, and
- 12:56Speaker 3: then she comes back, she'd be happy to pay another
- 12:58Speaker 3: fifty bucks, that'll be fine.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Because they're rude, bere I'm not paying the cheaper price.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Why am I paying the more expensive price? Time to
- 13:06Speaker 2: think about it, ill, I don't like it anyway, So Vid,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I'm just like skimming over the page that we're that's
- 13:15Speaker 2: kind of guiding us. And goldilocks window is on here. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 2: and it's not too hot, it's not too cold, it's
- 13:21Speaker 2: just right ah on the window.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Se No, it's not got anything to do with that.
- 13:26Speaker 3: But that was a good example. Maybe it's fantastic, But
- 13:30Speaker 3: there's also something called a Goldilocks window for buying flights,
- 13:35Speaker 3: So too early you are paying full fare, like you're
- 13:39Speaker 3: booking like a year and a half in advance. They're
- 13:41Speaker 3: going to be like, she's prepared, We're not going to
- 13:43Speaker 3: give her any discounts.
- 13:44Speaker 2: We don't care.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Too late, and you pay surge pricing, okay, because you
- 13:48Speaker 3: know they're like, she's desperate to get to Sydney or
- 13:51Speaker 3: she's desperate to get to Italy tomorrow, We're going to
- 13:54Speaker 3: charge her through the nose because.
- 13:55Speaker 2: What else is she going to do?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, So taking some time to research this window
- 14:00Speaker 3: for your flight to kind of hit the sweet spot
- 14:02Speaker 3: in between could save you some serious cash. Right, And
- 14:07Speaker 3: this is where I'll say that your friend chut GPT
- 14:09Speaker 3: could probably tell you Sure, every destination is going to
- 14:12Speaker 3: be really different because like some places, if it's like
- 14:14Speaker 3: a domestic flight, maybe they're like, whatever, we don't care,
- 14:17Speaker 3: we don't need to charge them through the nose. But
- 14:18Speaker 3: then like a big dog flight to like New York
- 14:21Speaker 3: or something last minute, they might go, Nah, if you
- 14:23Speaker 3: need to get to New York last minute, we're going
- 14:26Speaker 3: to take the mickey. I see, you know what I mean.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So mean, so we've just got to.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Keep an eye on it.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Sure, sure, Sure that is so because I imagine if
- 14:35Speaker 2: you're desperately trying to get overseas, it's maybe because like
- 14:37Speaker 2: a family member is seeing something but they don't give
- 14:40Speaker 2: a dan. They're like, great, this is more money for
- 14:42Speaker 2: us eastally sickening. Anyways, story for another time. But what
- 14:47Speaker 2: about accommodation?
- 14:48Speaker 3: Okay, so this is a good one. This is going
- 14:51Speaker 3: to be rude. So if you're a hotel company and
- 14:53Speaker 3: you were like, oh, I really want to wear Crusche's
- 14:55Speaker 3: on the money, maybe you don't anymore because I'm going
- 14:57Speaker 3: to tell you that you can rebook your accommodation and
- 15:00Speaker 3: when the prices drop.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 15:02Speaker 3: So hotel prices often move around all the time, even
- 15:05Speaker 3: after you've booked, so we're always looking. So if you've
- 15:08Speaker 3: booked a hotel, let's pretend it's like in New York,
- 15:10Speaker 3: like just keep checking every couple of weeks, like what
- 15:12Speaker 3: the price per night on that hotel is. Because if
- 15:15Speaker 3: you've chosen the flexible rate, meaning that there's like free cancelations,
- 15:20Speaker 3: you can actually cancel and then rebook for the lower rate.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and I think that that will save you
- 15:25Speaker 3: some money. And there's apps like Provo so pro Vo
- 15:29Speaker 3: pr Uvo YEP and rate punk, and these two apps
- 15:33Speaker 3: actually will check your exact hotel and your room for
- 15:36Speaker 3: you and keep you up to date with that. So basically,
- 15:40Speaker 3: when you're booking, don't be like, oh, I'm gonna not
- 15:43Speaker 3: do the flexible rate because this won't work for you.
- 15:45Speaker 3: But you book with the flexible rate, then if you
- 15:48Speaker 3: were going to use one of these apps, you would
- 15:49Speaker 3: forward your confirmation email to Provo or install rate Punk's
- 15:53Speaker 3: browser extension, which is my preferred method because it's like
- 15:57Speaker 3: in how you have like a shop back extension or
- 15:59Speaker 3: whatever like that, and then the tool watches that same
- 16:02Speaker 3: room type and the same date range on multiple different
- 16:05Speaker 3: websites for you, and then if the price falls, they're like.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Hey, Beck, did you realize that like your hotel's cheaper today?
- 16:11Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Yeah, And then you cancel your old booking and then
- 16:14Speaker 3: rebook the exact same room for less money.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 16:16Speaker 3: That is so clever, right, And the catch is you
- 16:19Speaker 3: do have to book the flexible rate, so often you'll
- 16:22Speaker 3: find that it's like ten or twenty dollars more personally
- 16:26Speaker 3: to do that, but it can actually save you hundreds
- 16:28Speaker 3: of dollars without changing your trip at all, and that
- 16:31Speaker 3: can be I don't know. I'm one for flexibility. You
- 16:34Speaker 3: never know what's going to happen. So and that's a
- 16:37Speaker 3: good deal.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That is so clever. So what else have you got?
- 16:41Speaker 3: All right? So the best rate guarantee? We are taking
- 16:46Speaker 3: advantage of this. And I'm not saying taking advantage as
- 16:49Speaker 3: seeing we're going to take the mickey, but we're going
- 16:51Speaker 3: to use the best rate guarantee if it's being offered.
- 16:54Speaker 3: So most big chains, so think like Hilton Hotels or
- 16:57Speaker 3: the Marriott, or like I don't know, the Whole or SOFTOTL,
- 17:01Speaker 3: they often run what's called a best rate guarantee. So
- 17:05Speaker 3: like that sounds good, but most of us don't deep
- 17:07Speaker 3: dive into what that actually means. But that means if
- 17:10Speaker 3: you book direct on their personal website, so not through
- 17:13Speaker 3: like a third party platform, then find the room cheaper
- 17:17Speaker 3: somewhere else, which you might so like you might go
- 17:20Speaker 3: on like a God or like I don't know, Last
- 17:23Speaker 3: Minute or something dot com, they will not only price match,
- 17:26Speaker 3: but they'll actually give you an extra twenty to twenty
- 17:28Speaker 3: five percent off. Oh okay, So I feel like that's
- 17:31Speaker 3: a good deal. So book direct first on a refundable rate,
- 17:35Speaker 3: so we're doing flex again so that you're safe if
- 17:39Speaker 3: you know, the claim fails, so you can be like, oh,
- 17:42Speaker 3: screw you, I'll just cancel my whole thing and go
- 17:44Speaker 3: through a Goda like whatever. But then find a public
- 17:48Speaker 3: ota with a lower price, which is like just like
- 17:51Speaker 3: a third party platform for the same room name, the
- 17:54Speaker 3: same bed type, the same cancelation terms, and the same currency.
- 17:58Speaker 3: And then I would be screenshot everything, like with the
- 18:01Speaker 3: date and the time, so like, don't just screenshot the
- 18:03Speaker 3: little bit, screenshot your whole computer screen so that it's
- 18:06Speaker 3: got the room name and like the cancelation type and
- 18:08Speaker 3: like the time and the date up in the corner
- 18:10Speaker 3: of your computer and then total price before taxes and fees,
- 18:14Speaker 3: and then file.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Within twenty four hours of booking direct, and they.
- 18:17Speaker 3: All price match it for you.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Gorgeous. That is so cool.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I mean to add to that, I want to say,
- 18:23Speaker 3: I'm a pest. You already know I'm a pest.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I can't imagine it.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I'll just call you direct. I'll just call the hotel
- 18:30Speaker 3: to book. I'm scared, but yes or no, Like the
- 18:33Speaker 3: girl on the phone's usually really nice.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 3: True, they're probably having a slow day on reception and
- 18:37Speaker 3: then they're like, oh, this annoying girl is calling, and
- 18:39Speaker 3: I'd be like, hey, like a better rate you can do?
- 18:41Speaker 2: Usually yes, yeah, that's true.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Actually usually yes, thank you, thank you.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Love that. I feel like this is a really good
- 18:48Speaker 2: time to have a really quick break, a holiday, you
- 18:51Speaker 2: could say, a holiday, a mini holiday. Imagine if we
- 18:54Speaker 2: actually came back in like six months, finish the episode.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so don't put it past us.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So we're gonna could take a quick on the flip side,
- 19:00Speaker 2: were we get a lot more money saving hacks. Okay, guys,
- 19:07Speaker 2: we are back. And if you're anything like me, I'm
- 19:09Speaker 2: literally shaking, gagging at throwing up at the idea of
- 19:12Speaker 2: more travel hacks. And I feel like you've got a
- 19:16Speaker 2: few here. You just have to be smart, right, yeah,
- 19:19Speaker 2: you just got too smart. It's like it's probably a
- 19:21Speaker 2: tiny bit more admin.
- 19:22Speaker 3: But imagine happy to do admin if I'm saving money,
- 19:25Speaker 3: Like I know some people say, oh no, I'm happy
- 19:27Speaker 3: to pay the premium. I don't know at what point
- 19:30Speaker 3: I will be happy to pay the premium? No, Like,
- 19:32Speaker 3: at what point will I be like do you know
- 19:34Speaker 3: what Victoria like? You're pretty financially comfortable. Stop trying to
- 19:37Speaker 3: get the best deal. No, I think it's in my blood.
- 19:41Speaker 3: How do you think she got here? How do you
- 19:42Speaker 3: think I got here? I'm not leaving anyway. There is
- 19:45Speaker 3: nothing more frustrating, I think than being charged to use
- 19:48Speaker 3: your own money when you're on holiday. What do you
- 19:50Speaker 3: mean I see? And when you're traveling. I think this
- 19:53Speaker 3: is like a million times worse. So I do have
- 19:56Speaker 3: a few hacks for this, and the first you're probably
- 20:00Speaker 3: going to be surprised by this because this is a
- 20:03Speaker 3: question we get all the time, like do I pay
- 20:04Speaker 3: in local currency or do I pay in Australian?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:07Speaker 3: Like, what do I do? Always pay in local currency
- 20:10Speaker 3: and avoid dynamic currency conversion or DCC? Okay, got the
- 20:15Speaker 3: DCC from the Cowboys Cheerleaders. Just DCC, which is like
- 20:19Speaker 3: the bad type. But DCC is when a cashier ATM
- 20:23Speaker 3: or card terminal asks, oh, do you want to pay
- 20:25Speaker 3: in aud instead of the local currency, and you go,
- 20:28Speaker 3: oh yes, no we say no, no, no, no, we
- 20:31Speaker 3: don't want that because it kind of looks helpful to
- 20:34Speaker 3: see the like you know, you're at checkout in Thailand
- 20:36Speaker 3: and it's like you want to pay in Australian it's
- 20:38Speaker 3: like fourteen dollars. You go, oh, well that makes more
- 20:40Speaker 3: sense to me. Yeah, okay, because it feels safer. It's
- 20:43Speaker 3: not because the cash rate is the conversion rate set
- 20:47Speaker 3: by the ATM or the merchant and that's usually much
- 20:50Speaker 3: worse than the official bank rate or the card network rate.
- 20:53Speaker 3: They're taking the absolute mickey, and then they often tack
- 20:56Speaker 3: on some kind of hidden margin. So you come home
- 20:58Speaker 3: and you're like, where are all these additional fees and
- 21:00Speaker 3: charges coming from? It's from that, got you? Okay. I
- 21:04Speaker 3: always always always choose the local currency and your bank
- 21:08Speaker 3: or your card network, like if you're with Visa or
- 21:10Speaker 3: master Card will handle the conversion and what I would
- 21:13Speaker 3: call a much fairer currency, right, that is wild. And
- 21:17Speaker 3: if you have a card without foreign exchange fees, you're
- 21:20Speaker 3: going to save even more. And that would be a
- 21:21Speaker 3: top tip, like don't go overseas if you've got a
- 21:23Speaker 3: card with foreign exchange fees.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Kelly, got you, got you save your money like
- 21:28Speaker 2: I in g or something. I don't know, I guess
- 21:30Speaker 2: you could do.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Personally, I can't give you advice on what bank to
- 21:33Speaker 3: use because that would be going against my financial services license.
- 21:36Speaker 3: But when I went to Bali, i used my WISE card.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Wise that's just why us, that is just what I used.
- 21:44Speaker 3: You would I know about money or making decisions, You've
- 21:49Speaker 3: got to make your own decision. But I used my
- 21:51Speaker 3: WIS card.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Are there other banks that have, you know, no foreign
- 21:54Speaker 2: exchange fees?
- 21:55Speaker 4: Yes?
- 21:55Speaker 3: Absolutely, Yeah, I just didn't use those ones a bad
- 21:58Speaker 3: but again, do your own research.
- 22:00Speaker 2: That's very good to know for no reason exactly.
- 22:04Speaker 3: And also sorry, we're going to take this a step
- 22:06Speaker 3: further and let an app find the best fee free
- 22:10Speaker 3: ATM for you, because like gol, we live in twenty
- 22:13Speaker 3: twenty five. There's an app for everything. So ATM fees overseas,
- 22:18Speaker 3: I think take the mikey right, Like, have you ever
- 22:21Speaker 3: gone to get cash out overseas? And you're like, but
- 22:23Speaker 3: you needed the cash because you're like already at the market. Yeah,
- 22:27Speaker 3: what are you going to do? You're going to pay it,
- 22:29Speaker 3: but we're not. Sometimes it could cost anywhere genuinely between
- 22:32Speaker 3: eight to twelve dollars just to take cash out your
- 22:34Speaker 3: own cash so that you can spend it. Oh, okay,
- 22:38Speaker 3: taking the mickey, don't like it? There's an app for that,
- 22:40Speaker 3: because in twenty twenty five there's an app for everything,
- 22:43Speaker 3: back to the ATM fee save app.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Oh okay, these guys are crazy. I love them.
- 22:49Speaker 3: They actually map ATMs in more than one hundred and
- 22:52Speaker 3: sixty countries and then they show you which ones are
- 22:55Speaker 3: like fee free or lower cost and even tells you
- 22:58Speaker 3: what like withdraw all limits are on it, or like
- 23:01Speaker 3: the foreign.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Cards it's accepting. I'm not paid for this.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I just thought this was genius because if you need
- 23:06Speaker 3: an ATM, like sorry, get the best one, and he's
- 23:09Speaker 3: kind of I've written down how it works so it
- 23:11Speaker 3: makes sense to you. First thing you're going to do
- 23:13Speaker 3: is download the app. Then you're like, okay, cool back.
- 23:15Speaker 3: And I just got back from Bali, so I feel
- 23:17Speaker 3: like this is my most recent example. Go search Bali
- 23:20Speaker 3: and your country, so Bali Indonesia. It's going to show
- 23:23Speaker 3: a map of all the nearby ATMs with user reported fees.
- 23:27Speaker 3: So the one thing I would say, it's user reported,
- 23:29Speaker 3: So like, the more people that have this app, the
- 23:31Speaker 3: more people that are contributing to the data, the better.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But then also it's not like verified through the bank,
- 23:37Speaker 3: like I could go on and be like cost fifty
- 23:39Speaker 3: million dollars, what are they going to do? But then
- 23:42Speaker 3: you're going to head to the fee free option save
- 23:45Speaker 3: eight bucks because when you're back home in Melbourne, that's
- 23:48Speaker 3: a coffee, but when you're in Bali, that's like cocktails
- 23:50Speaker 3: for two people. Hell yeah, that's so exactly right, exactly,
- 23:55Speaker 3: and I guess you're going to go fee what's the catch?
- 23:58Speaker 2: Of course?
- 23:58Speaker 3: Ye. Coverage is very dependent on I guess travelers submitting updates.
- 24:03Speaker 3: As I said before, like it's kind of up to
- 24:05Speaker 3: the users to be like, oh, I do this. So
- 24:07Speaker 3: in Bali really easy because there's lots of Australians and
- 24:10Speaker 3: lots of people who do that, but like maybe more
- 24:13Speaker 3: niche travel destinations are a little bit harder to find it.
- 24:16Speaker 3: So in some spots I would say it's.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Definitely not perfect.
- 24:19Speaker 3: But when it works, it works, and it can save
- 24:20Speaker 3: you hundreds of dollars on a longer holiday.
- 24:22Speaker 2: That is so good.
- 24:23Speaker 3: We are here to save money.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, I'm like kind of itching to get on
- 24:28Speaker 2: my phone and tell all my friends about this, but
- 24:30Speaker 2: I'm going to wait.
- 24:30Speaker 3: You can just sell them the whole episode that we did.
- 24:32Speaker 3: I think I might do that, just be like Hey,
- 24:34Speaker 3: sit down Buckley in. Yeah, I'm on a podcast and
- 24:37Speaker 3: I have been for years.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I have been for years. Actually, yeah, doct me. It's
- 24:42Speaker 2: not you. So okay, food can be a big one
- 24:45Speaker 2: on holiday. Yeah, do you have anything to save on that? Girl?
- 24:49Speaker 3: All I do is hack food when I'm away. And
- 24:53Speaker 3: you know what, this isn't for everybody. So I'll share this,
- 24:56Speaker 3: and I've shared this on the pod before, so this
- 24:57Speaker 3: isn't the new part. But then I've got a few
- 24:59Speaker 3: tips that are new. I don't believe unless breakfast included
- 25:04Speaker 3: in the holiday or in the package or it's like
- 25:06Speaker 3: real reasonable, we're not having breakfast a gotel, don't get
- 25:09Speaker 3: me wrong. So, like most recent trip for me was Bali.
- 25:12Speaker 3: We definitely had breakfast at the hotel because it's like
- 25:14Speaker 3: this big buffet and it was kind of part of
- 25:16Speaker 3: the experience. We'll staying at a resort, Like I didn't
- 25:18Speaker 3: want to leave to go and get food because it's
- 25:22Speaker 3: just not my journey for that trip. So what did
- 25:25Speaker 3: I do to make the most of that?
- 25:26Speaker 2: I have a toddler. Toddler's I would.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Say eat ninety nine percent of the time. My grocery
- 25:32Speaker 3: budget is ninety nine percent snacks at this point for
- 25:35Speaker 3: my toddler. So I took a lunch box and I
- 25:39Speaker 3: made a little sandwich every morning and put some of
- 25:41Speaker 3: the snacks and treats in there. So when midday came
- 25:43Speaker 3: and Harvey had his little lunch and he had some
- 25:46Speaker 3: afternoon tea, I was set. It made me very comfortable.
- 25:49Speaker 3: I didn't have to spend extra on going, Oh, we're
- 25:51Speaker 3: at the pool, like you know, we're still in our resort.
- 25:54Speaker 3: We're hanging out. Harvey's hungry. We should order some like
- 25:57Speaker 3: you know, chips beside the pool. I don't mind what
- 26:00Speaker 3: food it is. Like, Don't get me wrong. It's not
- 26:02Speaker 3: about health and wealth and whatever at this point in time.
- 26:04Speaker 3: It's actually about going to me. That's a ridiculous cost
- 26:07Speaker 3: for a toddler who would be just as happy with
- 26:09Speaker 3: a veggie Mike sandwich. Yeah, so I'm filling up my
- 26:13Speaker 3: lunch box at the buffet. When I was traveling Europe
- 26:18Speaker 3: with my girlfriends and we had no money, I had
- 26:21Speaker 3: zip lock bags that I bought at the local supermarket,
- 26:24Speaker 3: and I put an extra croissant in there from the
- 26:27Speaker 3: hostel's buffet breakfast that was included, and like buffet breakfasts
- 26:32Speaker 3: at hostel's dire but sorry morning tea or afternoon tea.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Not having to get a little lack snack because you
- 26:38Speaker 3: were starving because I took it from buffet breakfast. Amazing.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And I assume they'd throw that stuff out anyway.
- 26:44Speaker 3: I think, so, I like, no one ever stopped me,
- 26:47Speaker 3: No one has ever been like, oh no, Like in fact,
- 26:49Speaker 3: when I was filling my little lunch box, They're like,
- 26:51Speaker 3: do you need anything else? Oh? Thanks, cute?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Do you know what I mean?
- 26:55Speaker 3: Also when I was in bigger locations. So as I've
- 26:58Speaker 3: gotten older, I've traveled more expense if places like New
- 27:01Speaker 3: York in America, I'm sorry. The second we got there,
- 27:04Speaker 3: I was like, I'm not paying twenty five dollars USD
- 27:06Speaker 3: for the buffet breakfast at this hotel in the morning
- 27:08Speaker 3: for it to be toast and jam. So I went
- 27:11Speaker 3: to the supermarket and I got like cereals and stuff
- 27:14Speaker 3: like that set myself up amazing breakfast in bed every morning. Yeah,
- 27:18Speaker 3: really cheap, really easy. And to be honest, one of
- 27:21Speaker 3: the hacks that I have for traveling is like try
- 27:23Speaker 3: and I don't know if this is a hacker, if
- 27:25Speaker 3: this is just something that we do is trying to
- 27:27Speaker 3: have one or two meals at the hotel each day,
- 27:30Speaker 3: like or at where you're staying each day. And breakfast
- 27:32Speaker 3: I think is such an easy tick off the list. Yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 3: because I can eat something at home or eat something
- 27:38Speaker 3: where we're staying, and then we can go out and
- 27:40Speaker 3: still have a coffee, but we're not blowing our food
- 27:43Speaker 3: budget early in the day. I don't know about you,
- 27:45Speaker 3: but I'd much prefer to have like a fancy lunch
- 27:48Speaker 3: or a fancy dinner then spend money when traveling on breakfast. Yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 3: unless it's like a bucket list item, it's just not
- 27:54Speaker 3: my journey for sure. But then also we've spoken on
- 27:59Speaker 3: the podcast for about eat Club. Yes, they are actually international,
- 28:03Speaker 3: so you can hunt for eat club at your destination.
- 28:06Speaker 3: So we talk about apps like this, but most countries
- 28:09Speaker 3: have their own version. So what I would do is
- 28:12Speaker 3: search Google or your friend chat GPT and just be like, hey,
- 28:15Speaker 3: what's like the restaurant discount app for Europe, YEP for
- 28:19Speaker 3: Italy be specific maybe you're in Dubai, I don't know,
- 28:23Speaker 3: and then download it in advance and set up your
- 28:25Speaker 3: account so that you can see what's on offer. So
- 28:27Speaker 3: I did a little bit of research for you. In
- 28:30Speaker 3: Europe and in Latin America, there's an app called the
- 28:33Speaker 3: Fork and it looks basically like you eat club and
- 28:37Speaker 3: you earn like loyalty points and get discounted tables and
- 28:39Speaker 3: discounted rates, or you might get like a free bottle
- 28:42Speaker 3: of wine with your booking. Cool sorry, money in money.
- 28:46Speaker 3: In in Asia they have eaty go or ettygo, I
- 28:50Speaker 3: don't know, et go, yes, eatigo okay, And that's time
- 28:55Speaker 3: based discounts, so like no booking in advance, but they
- 28:58Speaker 3: might be like, oh tonight, this places having twenty five
- 29:01Speaker 3: percent off a few books through here, right, money win,
- 29:03Speaker 3: and like amazing, you're on holiday. I feel like we
- 29:06Speaker 3: do most things last minute. In the UK and in
- 29:08Speaker 3: Ireland they have Taste Cud Yeah, so they offer often
- 29:13Speaker 3: two for one or fifty percent off at thousands of
- 29:17Speaker 3: different restaurants. That is so good, right, So we're all
- 29:20Speaker 3: trying to save money at home, like, and we use
- 29:22Speaker 3: these apps at home, but then all of a sudden
- 29:24Speaker 3: when we go overseas, we forget that these things exist. Yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 3: so that's good and one of our favorites of the show.
- 29:30Speaker 3: And you've like mentioned it before, is like a broke
- 29:32Speaker 3: tip is too good to go. Yeah, sorry, that's international.
- 29:36Speaker 3: We didn't come up with that in Australia. That's actually
- 29:39Speaker 3: availably in so many different countries around the world. And
- 29:42Speaker 3: I would say that's a really good option because you
- 29:43Speaker 3: could get on like eat to go, look at a
- 29:46Speaker 3: bakery or something, get some cute like chocolate croissants or
- 29:48Speaker 3: something the night before Bam breakfast.
- 29:51Speaker 2: That's so clever.
- 29:52Speaker 3: My sin is really smart. I think that's so I'm
- 29:55Speaker 3: so excited to tell everyone I know about it. I
- 29:57Speaker 3: just feel so good when you're on holiday. I don't
- 30:00Speaker 3: know about you, but you just have this idea that
- 30:02Speaker 3: oh it's a luxury Absolutely you just go, oh, it's
- 30:05Speaker 3: definitely going to be more expensive, but you can still
- 30:08Speaker 3: be a little bit savvy. Absolutely, like we can still
- 30:10Speaker 3: save money and like these rules, I've never felt like
- 30:13Speaker 3: they're restrictive, like this idea that we have, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 3: one meal at home for me. Yes, It's very different
- 30:20Speaker 3: when I'm traveling to a more budget friendly country like Asia.
- 30:23Speaker 3: So like in Bali, I'm like, well, what really is
- 30:26Speaker 3: the difference of going to the supermarket and buying all
- 30:29Speaker 3: of the groceries and then bring in that's that's not
- 30:31Speaker 3: the journey for me and Bali but sorry in Italy
- 30:34Speaker 3: when we were in more expensive locations like New York
- 30:37Speaker 3: America wherever, for me, I'm like, no, that's going to
- 30:40Speaker 3: save me like fifteen dollars USD, which is close to
- 30:43Speaker 3: thirty dollars Australian right off the bat. And if I'm
- 30:46Speaker 3: there for ten days, that stuff adds.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Up for sure. That's one hundreds and hundreds of dollars exactly.
- 30:52Speaker 3: And I don't know about you, Beck, but sorry, American
- 30:54Speaker 3: cereals are really fun.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I love lucky charms. Yeah, we like went to the
- 30:59Speaker 2: supermarket there.
- 31:00Speaker 3: It was like a whole other experience that was a
- 31:02Speaker 3: free activity, warm turn out of tear.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Even the comedian stores here, there's something about the American
- 31:08Speaker 2: sweets and treats.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Oh, they just wanted to look at them exactly right,
- 31:12Speaker 3: So you can still have fun and doesn't need to
- 31:14Speaker 3: be boring. You don't need to go get your like
- 31:16Speaker 3: stocks downed. Okay, well, when we get there, we'll buy
- 31:18Speaker 3: a loaf of bread, non s something fun. It can
- 31:22Speaker 3: even be like something fun and a little bit more
- 31:24Speaker 3: like bougie than what you would usually do, but you're
- 31:26Speaker 3: probably already still saving money by doing exactly treat yourself.
- 31:30Speaker 2: So we often have like solo travelers in our community
- 31:33Speaker 2: that say they want to save money on budget accommodation,
- 31:36Speaker 2: but they don't want it to be in a dorm
- 31:38Speaker 2: for safety reasons, of course, and for other reasons. I'm sure,
- 31:41Speaker 2: So give me your best tip.
- 31:42Speaker 3: I've stayed in a few dorms and in like costels,
- 31:46Speaker 3: and one of the things I would say is, I
- 31:47Speaker 3: absolutely agree. When I was traveling this is obviously like
- 31:51Speaker 3: segue into solo travelers, but one of the things I
- 31:55Speaker 3: would say is you can obviously pick like all female
- 31:57Speaker 3: dorms if you want, or like when I was traveling
- 32:00Speaker 3: with a group of four, we found it very economical
- 32:03Speaker 3: to book out a dorm for six people and say
- 32:06Speaker 3: that we wanted the whole thing, but it was only
- 32:08Speaker 3: four of us. Then we got like dorm rates, but
- 32:11Speaker 3: we didn't. We just split the cost and we kind
- 32:14Speaker 3: of had our own private room and that was a
- 32:16Speaker 3: good deal. But when it comes to individual travel, it
- 32:20Speaker 3: obviously like adds up because you can't split your room
- 32:22Speaker 3: cost with anybody. No, I'll be like, oh, I beck
- 32:24Speaker 3: this hotel is like two hundred bucks. Oh, it's only
- 32:26Speaker 3: one hundred dollars ahead, Like that just doesn't work. But
- 32:29Speaker 3: did you know when students clear out for like semester breaks,
- 32:34Speaker 3: universities kind of sometimes quietly flip their dorms into budget accommodation.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Oh okay, right, anyway, this means you could score a
- 32:41Speaker 3: bed and this usually happens in like America and London,
- 32:44Speaker 3: not so much Australia, but like in a central city
- 32:47Speaker 3: location on a budget with I would say, way, if
- 32:50Speaker 3: you were drunk backpackers banking on your door at three
- 32:52Speaker 3: am in Australia, you could have a look and see
- 32:55Speaker 3: if like UNI lodge or like campus living villages do it,
- 32:59Speaker 3: because I know they do. It's just, as I said,
- 33:01Speaker 3: a little bit more scarce than overseas. Plus individual UNI
- 33:06Speaker 3: residences in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth seem to do that
- 33:09Speaker 3: over summer. Sorry, room started like forty bucks a night,
- 33:12Speaker 3: beck Yeah, okay, that's so good. It allers, that's so good.
- 33:15Speaker 3: That's dorm pricing, not for dorm rooms. And often you
- 33:18Speaker 3: get access to the kitchen or sorry, laundry facilities include it.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Right overseas, there's a website, and this is where you
- 33:26Speaker 3: get access to a bit more is university rooms dot
- 33:30Speaker 3: com and they have more than eight hundred different universities
- 33:34Speaker 3: across the UK, across Europe and across Canada, including get this,
- 33:37Speaker 3: you could stay at Oxford or Cambridge. Yeah, you could
- 33:41Speaker 3: put on your resume that you went to Cambridge.
- 33:43Speaker 2: It was a day so cool. Imagine and you're dating.
- 33:46Speaker 3: You're not lying, I went there one time. Like, yes,
- 33:49Speaker 3: of course I've been to Harvard.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I slept there obviously.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Obviously when you could, like I don't know, you live
- 33:55Speaker 3: out your royal fantasy like American student loan dream for
- 33:59Speaker 3: a fresh of the cost.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Of a hotel. That's so good.
- 34:02Speaker 3: That is actually such a beatle work. This one I
- 34:04Speaker 3: thought was really cool. So I've been to Edinburgh before
- 34:07Speaker 3: and I loved it. I actually went to Edinburgh over
- 34:10Speaker 3: New Year's one year and went to Hogomena, which is
- 34:13Speaker 3: their big New Year's festival. Oh my god. I was
- 34:16Speaker 3: so cold because it was the middle of winter and
- 34:18Speaker 3: the middle of the night, but I had the best time.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Edinburgh unidorms actually moonlight as budget hotels during like the
- 34:26Speaker 3: fringe festivals, when normal accommodation prices go up.
- 34:30Speaker 2: That's so good.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Look at like times that you want to be there
- 34:32Speaker 3: because like school's not in during New Years, so you
- 34:36Speaker 3: get an empty room in Edinburgh for hogmna at a
- 34:40Speaker 3: really cheap price.
- 34:41Speaker 2: That's so sick. What anat idea?
- 34:44Speaker 3: All right?
- 34:45Speaker 2: Beck?
- 34:45Speaker 3: I know that a lot of this yap in has
- 34:48Speaker 3: meant that I'm running out of time very quickly, but
- 34:51Speaker 3: I want to know, do you have any broke tips
- 34:53Speaker 3: to share? We're going to like bring the Friday segment
- 34:56Speaker 3: into this episode to share when it comes to travel.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Like what have you round? I guess, like you know,
- 35:01Speaker 2: and other than the ones that I've used before, where
- 35:03Speaker 2: I'm like, where every single item of clothing that you
- 35:07Speaker 2: can so that you don't have to Oh yeah, that's
- 35:09Speaker 2: a kicking yeah yeah, And I think this one might.
- 35:11Speaker 3: But I do think that's quite funny though. I saw
- 35:14Speaker 3: a girl on TikTok the other day and she's like,
- 35:16Speaker 3: if you don't want to wear all of your coats
- 35:18Speaker 3: and jackets and stuff, fold up, like wear an extra
- 35:21Speaker 3: extra large bra and fold up all of your undies
- 35:24Speaker 3: and all of your T shirts. No one's going to
- 35:26Speaker 3: question your breast size.
- 35:27Speaker 2: No. And I was like what's going on there, because
- 35:30Speaker 2: that would be rude. She'd be like, hey, my eyes
- 35:32Speaker 2: are up here, sadly, stop looking at my T shirt exactly.
- 35:37Speaker 2: So this one might not be like like a great
- 35:40Speaker 2: hack or whatever, like a lot of people might think.
- 35:42Speaker 2: If you've come up with it, I think it'll be good.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Well I would hope so, but I fear that. So
- 35:46Speaker 2: what I'm going to say is the wiki camps app,
- 35:48Speaker 2: because I tend to like I drive to Sydney a lot,
- 35:51Speaker 2: and I just love like going on little like you know,
- 35:54Speaker 2: short stays by myself or whatever, and the wiki camps
- 35:56Speaker 2: app will show you heaps of free or low coal
- 36:00Speaker 2: camping spots across Australia.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Oh that's a good deal.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Ones that are and you know there are so many
- 36:04Speaker 2: free spots, but they will, like, you know, if it's
- 36:07Speaker 2: any good, you'll be able to see, like you know,
- 36:09Speaker 2: it'll show you the amenities list, but also you'll each
- 36:11Speaker 2: one will come with its own real reviews and photos
- 36:14Speaker 2: from other travelers, so you can see what you're signing
- 36:15Speaker 2: up for.
- 36:16Speaker 3: If we drive in okay, so like if you went back,
- 36:19Speaker 3: you would like take a picture and upload it and
- 36:20Speaker 3: be like this is pretty sick, or like take a
- 36:22Speaker 3: photo of a dodgy toilet and be like not so
- 36:25Speaker 3: great but still free exactly exactly okay, okay, And you
- 36:28Speaker 3: can filter it based on like, you know, I would
- 36:30Speaker 3: like a bonfire, I would like you know, a powered
- 36:33Speaker 3: site or whatever.
- 36:33Speaker 2: You can filter it based on what you're looking for,
- 36:35Speaker 2: and so I think it's really good.
- 36:36Speaker 3: A bonfire is so fun. You know what I hate
- 36:40Speaker 3: about bonfires, and you probably don't care as much as
- 36:42Speaker 3: I do because I spend a lot of time doing
- 36:44Speaker 3: my hair, is that when you go to a bonfire,
- 36:48Speaker 3: you walk away and my hair smells like the bonfire,
- 36:52Speaker 3: like shampooed it like three times.
- 36:54Speaker 2: It's so frustrating. No, I get it everything you own
- 36:56Speaker 2: for it because it's like the vibes. But then also
- 36:58Speaker 2: now I smell.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Like a camp.
- 37:01Speaker 2: You've really got to commit to a bonfire, yeah, Like
- 37:03Speaker 2: do I stay really far away?
- 37:05Speaker 3: And then even when I've done that, I'm like, I
- 37:07Speaker 3: still smell like a school camp.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Reaches is going on somehow to get you.
- 37:11Speaker 4: So.
- 37:12Speaker 2: But one thing I should say is Wiki camps is
- 37:14Speaker 2: not free aut but it's just like a one min
- 37:16Speaker 2: not free.
- 37:17Speaker 3: How much is it?
- 37:18Speaker 2: It's only nine dollars ninety nine, but which I know
- 37:21Speaker 2: it's like it actually is not.
- 37:22Speaker 3: That's pretty good if you're getting like free camp spots
- 37:25Speaker 3: and like it's doing all the research for you. ID,
- 37:27Speaker 3: that's a pretty good deal. And did you say you
- 37:29Speaker 3: like only buy it once.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You o the bay ones, which you can. I like
- 37:32Speaker 2: I do every time you Okay, I like her to
- 37:35Speaker 2: pay up front. I know what I'm paying for and
- 37:36Speaker 2: then it's free forever.
- 37:37Speaker 3: I feel like a good deal. You and I I
- 37:39Speaker 3: reckon you be on accommodation. Like you find the free
- 37:42Speaker 3: camp spot. I'll go to the supermarket, get us all
- 37:44Speaker 3: the breakfast items if we need go camping night before
- 37:48Speaker 3: bonfire hot dogs that's from Supermico Gorges. In the morning,
- 37:51Speaker 3: we're having cereal fine, and then we can go out
- 37:54Speaker 3: for lunch at like a bougie pub or something perfect.
- 37:56Speaker 3: I feel like that's a good weekend away.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Sorry genius, all right, beck I reckon that is probably
- 38:02Speaker 3: a very good place to leave it. I hope you
- 38:05Speaker 3: guys have picked up a few little hacks or tips
- 38:07Speaker 3: or tricks to make your next trip, I don't know,
- 38:09Speaker 3: a little bit easier. But also, like I think it's
- 38:12Speaker 3: fun doing the planning.
- 38:13Speaker 2: It is fun. It's probably in a spreadsheet.
- 38:15Speaker 3: If you're anything like me, put it in a spreadsheet
- 38:17Speaker 3: because it will make the planning better, but it also
- 38:19Speaker 3: makes it easier on your bank account. And if you
- 38:21Speaker 3: loved this episode, just like Beck, send it to all
- 38:24Speaker 3: of your friends, but please make sure that you hit
- 38:27Speaker 3: subscribe and share it with your travel buddies so that
- 38:29Speaker 3: they can save a few dollars here and there too.
- 38:32Speaker 3: We will see you back here on Friday for our
- 38:33Speaker 3: next episode, Guys.
