- 0:28and let's see where this leads. There's a word that sums up the
- 0:34last few years of my life, and that's indulgence.
- 0:39It's something that a lot of people don't take the time to do
- 0:44or even think about. They're too busy living life,
- 0:48getting through the list, getting the kids off to school,
- 0:52making sure their errands have been run, and of course,
- 0:56grinding it out at work. That finding time to indulge and
- 1:00enjoy themselves, that's a luxury.
- 1:04I speak from experience. That was very much me.
- 1:08I didn't even think I was missing out, to be honest.
- 1:10I thought that that was what life was.
- 1:13When you're a kid, you're figuring things out.
- 1:16Then you settle into a job, have kids, get married, talk about
- 1:21things like mortgage and now you're adulting and the time for
- 1:26enjoyment while there's glimpses here and there.
- 1:29But otherwise it's same same for each day.
- 1:34But I think somewhere between COVID and my kids getting old
- 1:38enough to go to school and be a little bit more independent, I
- 1:42started putting the focus back on me and what do I want?
- 1:47I also didn't really know what I wanted because I never really
- 1:50thought I was missing out on anything.
- 1:52I thought I had designed my life perfectly.
- 1:55Everything was going to stay the same and that was safe and
- 2:01organized and predictable. But I miscalculated something
- 2:06and that is that life is meant to be lived and all I was doing
- 2:11was doing. I started itching for different
- 2:14things. It actually started with stuff.
- 2:18I started itching for luxury items, things that I'd put on my
- 2:23list when I was a child, things that would mark my success.
- 2:28I thought by a certain age I should have a certain amount of
- 2:30things, material things, specific material things, but I
- 2:37never gave myself permission to get those things, whether it was
- 2:40a bag or jewelry. I just thought, no, I couldn't,
- 2:44I shouldn't. There's so many better ways to
- 2:46spend money. But then this feeling of feeling
- 2:50deprived with setting in, like I was missing out and I was
- 2:55choosing to. But again, the guilt was there.
- 2:59How can I spend money on this stuff?
- 3:01It's just stuff. So when the opportunity for me
- 3:05to get a second full time job, and I mean full time job, I was
- 3:08working late nights and traveling, I did it partly
- 3:12because then I would feel a little less guilt and I could
- 3:15get those things finally. I don't know why I had this
- 3:18list. Maybe it has something to do
- 3:20with my upbringing. I grew up in a very wealthy
- 3:23city. My family wasn't wealthy by New
- 3:26York standards. I guess we were rich adjacent,
- 3:29which meant that I got to see a lot of wealthy people and the
- 3:33way they lived and what they had amassed.
- 3:35Bags upon bags and dresses upon dresses and cars upon cars and
- 3:40houses upon houses. You get the idea.
- 3:44And I just didn't know if they'd ever reach enough.
- 3:48Would they ever be satisfied? That's something I didn't know.
- 3:52To me, it looked like they just kept moving the goal posts back
- 3:56and adding to the list, the list of things.
- 4:00So when I made this short list of things that I thought I
- 4:03should have and I'm successful or at a certain age or the
- 4:06combo, I kept it short. I kept it attainable.
- 4:11And I reminded myself that none of this stuff was necessary.
- 4:15They were just symbols for me. So when I did work down that
- 4:19list and I checked each thing off and I was getting closer and
- 4:22closer to the bottom of the list, I wondered, would I still
- 4:25be that same girl with that same mindset?
- 4:28Was that really aligned with who I was becoming?
- 4:31And the answer is yes. When I reached the bottom of the
- 4:35list, something came over me. A feeling of being content, a
- 4:40feeling of being satisfied. But something else had come over
- 4:45me too. What was next?
- 4:48What else could I go after for so long?
- 4:52I had rounded my shoulders, hunched a little bit to
- 4:56compensate for my chest when I went to go see a trainer.
- 5:00That was indulgence as well. That was me time to the fullest.
- 5:06So many people, we shy away from the gym.
- 5:09We don't take our health seriously.
- 5:11We come up with excuses. We don't have the time.
- 5:14We feel guilty. We shouldn't be doing this.
- 5:17We shouldn't be choosing us. And then we believe it and we
- 5:22forget about ourselves. We forget that the only person
- 5:25that's really looking out for ourselves is ourself.
- 5:29And the next thing you know, you're going to see a trainer to
- 5:32get your shoulders fixed so that you can stand up straight.
- 5:36And after I did that, I gained discipline.
- 5:39I gained an understanding that things were possible to change
- 5:42that I didn't think were possible.
- 5:45And I thought, what else was possible?
- 5:47Could I get stronger? Leaner.
- 5:50Could I let my discipline grow in different ways?
- 5:54And so I went after it, setting small goals and watching them
- 6:00compound, watching me change not just my physique, but the way I
- 6:06was wired, the way I approach things.
- 6:11And by now I had started changing, throwing myself in
- 6:13situations that got me uncomfortable.
- 6:16Situations I chose to get me uncomfortable, like seeing a
- 6:19trainer several times a week or shopping in stores I never
- 6:24thought I would shop in. I was trying new things.
- 6:28I was becoming maybe someone I was always but didn't give
- 6:33myself the space to be. I think for a lot of us, we're
- 6:38so used to just being who we thought we were that we don't
- 6:42stop to think, does this still work for me?
- 6:44Does this still seem like me? Or is there more in me that I
- 6:49should be exploring? And that leads me to my time
- 6:53indulging in experiences. For so much of my life, I had
- 6:57like things really safe. Change was not my friend growing
- 7:03up. I could cry if there was any
- 7:06sort of change in my apartment building, and I did.
- 7:09When they changed my awning, I cried.
- 7:11I couldn't believe it had been changed, that my awning of my
- 7:16apartment building was not going to look the same.
- 7:19I think it went from green to burgundy or maybe the reverse.
- 7:25And now here I was saying bring on the change, but this change
- 7:31was going to be different because there were things that I
- 7:34hadn't done that I wanted to do in my 20s, things that I now
- 7:39getting so far away from my 20s was feeling like I had missed
- 7:42out on. That feeling of feeling deprived
- 7:45was creeping in. But this time it was coming with
- 7:48resentment and I knew that I needed to try.
- 7:53I wanted to know what it was like to be single, live alone.
- 7:57I had always been dependent on people.
- 8:00I went from living with my parents to getting married.
- 8:04I had never been self reliant. I had never had a space to call
- 8:07my own. There were other things I hadn't
- 8:11done that many people do in their 20s.
- 8:14Things that bring them a little closer to who they are or who
- 8:18they're going to become. I guess the 20s lays the
- 8:21groundwork. For some, it eradicates the
- 8:24people please are in them. For others, they realize that
- 8:28they're not a kid anymore. And for others, they get their
- 8:31heartbroken so many times that they're forced to see
- 8:33relationships differently. They have to start putting
- 8:36themselves first, set boundaries and require more from others.
- 8:44And I think bit by bit, through all those experiences, they find
- 8:47themselves a little bit. So when I told my ex that I
- 8:53wanted to separate because I wanted to experience what it was
- 8:57to be single, I wanted to date, I wanted to live alone.
- 9:03That was a bold move, one that I couldn't come back from.
- 9:07I was fully stepping into something that I didn't fully
- 9:11know what I was stepping into, but I was ready to get
- 9:13uncomfortable. I was ready for change.
- 9:18My ex was extremely supportive. He was older, he had lived more
- 9:23life than I had, and he figured that one day this day would
- 9:26come. My children were very supportive
- 9:29too. My son was like, mom, you only
- 9:33live once. If you feel like you missed out
- 9:36on some experiences when you were younger, go figure it out.
- 9:42And that's what I did. I moved to an apartment across
- 9:44the street, one where I work at. I see my kids in the morning to
- 9:49get them off to school and I'm there when they get home.
- 9:53The balance is special and I am so grateful I get to indulge in
- 9:59my own space. Live alone and learn what it
- 10:03feels like to be single while still getting to be around my
- 10:07children all the time. For this, I am so fortunate.
- 10:13And I never downplayed that. I got to feel like what it was
- 10:17to decorate my own space. And then it came time for me to
- 10:21figure out my style, not just in home furnishings, but also in
- 10:27decorating me. For so long I had kind of
- 10:31thought, when you're working, you should look one way.
- 10:34When you're a wife, you should look another, when you're a mom,
- 10:37you should dress this way. And when you're in your 30s or
- 10:4040s, you should dress this way. But then I wiped the slate clean
- 10:44and I said, why? Why do these labels have so much
- 10:47value where we have to conform to them, to this make believe
- 10:52idea of what somebody in their 30s or 40s should look like or
- 10:56somebody that's a mom should dress like?
- 10:58And I was going to be dating again.
- 11:00So I thought, let me present me when I go out with these people,
- 11:05people I've never met before, people that don't know all the
- 11:08labels, people that don't need to know all these labels.
- 11:12And I walked into stores as though I had never walked into
- 11:16stores before. Not zeroing in on what I should
- 11:20like or what I did like, but looking at everything and seeing
- 11:25what I actually like, what I gravitate towards.
- 11:30And that's when I realized I love bold patterns, something
- 11:36the old me would have shield away from.
- 11:38Don't be loud, don't be seen. Well, I moved that perspective
- 11:43out. That old point of view wasn't
- 11:45welcome here. And that ushered in newness.
- 11:49I guess I'd lived for so long with all those rules and a
- 11:53certain sense of style that it made sense to welcome in
- 11:56something new. And it was fun.
- 12:00I recommend everybody go out and buy something that is different.
- 12:04Different for them, that is. See how it feels.
- 12:08See if maybe it feels better than you think.
- 12:13So once I indulged in my wardrobe and figuring all that
- 12:16out, I kicked off dating. It was as much of a fun time as
- 12:22it was funny, interesting and eye opening and messy, just like
- 12:28you'd expect. During that time I learned so
- 12:32much about people. What other time can you think of
- 12:35where you're meeting so many people with the thought of,
- 12:39could this person be someone special in my life?
- 12:42Could this person be someone that I want to spend time with?
- 12:45When you think like that, you take things a little bit more
- 12:48seriously, or at least you should.
- 12:53And as a result, I started to say no more.
- 12:56Before dating. Saying no was not something I
- 12:59really said often. It was a muscle that was pretty
- 13:02weak, partly because it was around people that I felt like I
- 13:05couldn't say no to. Like family, friends from
- 13:09childhood, my kids, friends, parents, my Co workers, my
- 13:15clients. But the guys I was going on
- 13:18dates with, well, I didn't have connections to them like I did
- 13:22the other people in my life. So that meant that I didn't have
- 13:25to worry so much. I could just worry about what
- 13:28mattered to me. And that meant saying no became
- 13:32a whole lot easier. And it sounded something like
- 13:35this. No, I don't want to go to the
- 13:37restaurant. No, I don't want to meet at
- 13:409:00. No, I don't drink.
- 13:43No, I don't really like to do that.
- 13:46No, I don't really need to go out on another date.
- 13:51No, No, no, no. No is what I got good at saying.
- 13:57And I have to say for anyone that's a people pleaser,
- 13:59learning how to say your no, well, it's liberating.
- 14:05And after indulging and saying no, I have less of a problem
- 14:09saying no to people that I actually do know, people I care
- 14:12for. And I don't say it because why
- 14:15not? I say it because there's
- 14:17somebody I care about also, and that's me.
- 14:21When you put yourself back in the equation, well, you remember
- 14:25that you matter, that you've got to take care of yourself because
- 14:29you're the one looking out for your best interest.
- 14:32I'd like to think that there's a lot of people looking out for
- 14:34your best interest, but it has to start with you.
- 14:38So after I dated and dated and dated some more, I figured it
- 14:42out. I figured out what I felt like I
- 14:44was missing. There's no more mystery and I
- 14:48can comfortably say that I'm not deprived.
- 14:52I don't feel like I missed out on anything now.
- 14:55I felt like I honored that time of figuring out me.
- 14:59And I have to say, through dating, I found out more about
- 15:03people and the people I connect with and don't.
- 15:08I found out where I fit in in the equation of being with
- 15:11someone else. And I'm not just talking about
- 15:14romantically. I mean, even in friendships and
- 15:17in work. But there was one thing that I
- 15:21was still itching to do something I didn't think I would
- 15:24itch to do, and that was travel. When I was younger, my mom would
- 15:29take me on flights. She was a flight attendant.
- 15:31So I was very lucky. I got to travel all over the
- 15:34world with her. And then I got married and I got
- 15:37to travel with my ex. And then when we had kids, our
- 15:41vacations turned to trips because when you travel with
- 15:44kids, it's more like a trip. There's less downtime.
- 15:48And then I traveled for work and I found a nice balance of me
- 15:53time and work time. So when I lost my job, I
- 15:56thought, well, now I have so much time on my hands, surely
- 15:59I'm going to be traveling with friends.
- 16:01Naively, I thought that when I did ask my friends if they could
- 16:05travel with me, they said I only have so many vacation days and I
- 16:09have to save it for my family, or I have to save it for the
- 16:12holidays or I can't afford to travel right now.
- 16:16I waited a while thinking, oh at some point that's going to
- 16:19change, someone's going to take me up on my offer.
- 16:23But that didn't happen and resentment started to take the
- 16:27place of my hopefulness. Then I thought, Oh well, when I
- 16:30start dating, for sure I'm going to travel with these guys again.
- 16:35I had forgotten something. I had miscalculated one big
- 16:40thing. How I travel and how other
- 16:42people travel are not likely the same.
- 16:46I found this out quickly when I was reading through guys dating
- 16:49profiles and when they would talk about travel.
- 16:52Their idea of travel was different.
- 16:55They would say their ideal trip would be camping and sleeping
- 16:59under the stars. My ideal trip couldn't be
- 17:02further from that. Mine was a combo of history
- 17:05meets luxury in far off places or the beach.
- 17:09So I didn't hold my breath when it came to the idea of traveling
- 17:12with guys. So when I started feeling
- 17:15deprived again, well that meant it was time for me to act.
- 17:19And that's when I realized that I had forgotten about one person
- 17:22that I could travel with. Someone that was always ready to
- 17:26ready to get uncomfortable with me, explore with me, and was
- 17:30pretty much up for anything. Yep, you guessed it myself.
- 17:34I had never solo traveled, but I thought, well if this is the
- 17:39season of getting uncomfortable, this is the best way to do it.
- 17:43No sooner than I thought that I walked into a Pilates class, one
- 17:47that I didn't really take that often with this one instructor.
- 17:51I was there a little early and she was talking about a retreat
- 17:53that she was planning in Bali. This retreat was like 9 or 10
- 17:57months out. I asked her to send me
- 17:59information and that night I sent in a deposit.
- 18:02I thought the time is always now and God knows what I'll be up to
- 18:06in 10 months. I'm just going to decide now.
- 18:10So to plan to flag in these plans, I decided it was best
- 18:13that I buy my airfare next. And that's when I found out that
- 18:17you cannot fly from Los Angeles direct to Bali and that I'd have
- 18:20to connect in another country. And that's when I saw Japan on
- 18:24the list. I thought that's where I'm going
- 18:26to go. I'd never been there.
- 18:28It was on my short list along with Bali.
- 18:31So next thing you know, I'm indulging in planning this trip.
- 18:34And I didn't stop there. I added Singapore to my return.
- 18:38I was going to hit those three areas, places I really wanted to
- 18:41go to. But I kept thinking one day I'd
- 18:44go, one day I'd go with somebody.
- 18:47Until I found out that that somebody was me.
- 18:51As I planned my itinerary, I got more and more excited.
- 18:54I indulged further. I started packing my bags two
- 18:58months before. Whenever I would tell people of
- 19:00that, they would think that that was ridiculous.
- 19:03I would hear things like, wow, you have a lot of time on your
- 19:06hands. All right here.
- 19:08You must be really excited about this trip.
- 19:10And I thought, you know what it is?
- 19:12I'm really excited to do something that I want to do,
- 19:15something I'm choosing. And when you're planning a trip
- 19:19by yourself, every decision you get to make, you don't have to
- 19:23worry about anybody else's opinions.
- 19:25It's everything you want to do. I can't think of a more self
- 19:29indulgent act than planning a trip for yourself.
- 19:33And yes, packing was part of it. It was part of the preparation,
- 19:37part of the me time. The trip hasn't happened yet.
- 19:42It's right around the corner and coincidentally it coincides with
- 19:45my birthday and when I first released this episode.
- 19:49I should be in Bali. And I can't really tell what
- 19:52this trip is going to be like. I don't have a crystal ball.
- 19:54And I guess it doesn't really matter.
- 19:57It's going to be what it's going to be.
- 19:59Fun, funny, uncomfortable, confusing, probably irritating
- 20:03at times. Boring, and I'll probably find
- 20:06myself nervous and frustrated. But from all this, there'll be
- 20:11growth because of the core. That's what experiences do for
- 20:15us. It makes us grow.
- 20:17That's why skipping my 20s wasn't going to really work for
- 20:20me. I had to go back and figure out
- 20:23what I missed. And I'm so grateful that I did
- 20:27so in honor of celebrating where we are in our lives, the
- 20:31uncomfortable things we take on, the things we let go of, the
- 20:35newness we embrace, and the changes that come.
- 20:39I thought I'd end with a story about cake food.
- 20:42Glorious food. That's what I thought when I
- 20:45entered my family's house and on the counter I saw two beautiful
- 20:49fluffy Angel food cakes staring at me.
- 20:52And at first, I didn't think that they were intended for me.
- 20:56My former father-in-law had made them and brought them over, and
- 20:59it turns out he made them gluten free so that my son and I could
- 21:02enjoy them. I hadn't seen this cake in 14
- 21:05years since I went gluten free when I was first married.
- 21:08He would make those cakes for me all the time, but then they
- 21:12disappeared until this day. I walked over to the cake.
- 21:17Could it be the same? It looked the same, but would it
- 21:21taste the same? I pulled one closer to me.
- 21:25I grabbed a knife and I cut into it.
- 21:28It seemed the same. I took a bite and I quickly was
- 21:32getting reacquainted with what seemed like an old friend.
- 21:36The first slice of cake I ate quick.
- 21:39Yes, it does taste the same. This is amazing.
- 21:43Then the second slice I was a little bit more trepidatious,
- 21:47thinking maybe I shouldn't, maybe I should wait until
- 21:50tomorrow. And then I stopped.
- 21:53I caught myself negotiating with myself and realized I didn't
- 21:57need to do that. I wanted to properly indulge and
- 22:01I didn't want to feel guilty while doing it.
- 22:04Nope. No room for second guessing
- 22:06here. Just keep enjoying.
- 22:09And that's what I did. I tabled any guilt, any little
- 22:13voice in my head putting doubt into my mind as to what I should
- 22:16do with the next bite. And that's when I got serious.
- 22:20I poured myself a glass of milk and I cut the next slice.
- 22:24And then the slices got bigger. I was fully immersed in
- 22:27reconnecting with this cake. And then it was all gone, and I
- 22:32was smiling like a Cheshire cat. I was so proud of every bite,
- 22:38every choice I made with that cake.
- 22:41And I was grateful that there was a second one waiting for my
- 22:44family. I guess indulging in cake, it's
- 22:48a simple thing, a thing we don't let ourselves do that often.
- 22:52We hold ourselves back, we tell ourselves we shouldn't.
- 22:57But what if you did? What if you gave yourself
- 22:59permission to indulge in things that you don't get to indulge in
- 23:02that often? It could be as simple as cake,
- 23:05or it could be returning to something you used to love or
- 23:09taking on new experiences. And then commit and indulge and
- 23:14see how does it feel to try Get a little uncomfortable and then
- 23:19go after whatever it is that you want for yourself, what you want
- 23:23for your future, and then see where it leads.
