- 0:12Hello, Melissa Crick here back with you on another one-on-one
- 0:17session with me here on the field podcast.
- 0:20I'm glad to have you here with me today.
- 0:23Today we're going to talk about the boundary blueprint, and this
- 0:29one is an interesting one because the word boundary has
- 0:33different impacts on people. Some people really like the
- 0:37word, some people don't. So if the word boundary triggers
- 0:40you in any way, think of it another way, thinking of it as a
- 0:46platform blueprint. Think of it as a framework
- 0:50blueprint, a way you want to like a calendar blueprint where
- 0:54you want your life to be guided by very clear yeses and Nos of
- 1:01who you're giving your time to, where you're giving your time
- 1:04to, what you're allowing in your life, what you're not allowing
- 1:08in your life in terms of energy and attitude.
- 1:13And impact, I mean those kinds of things.
- 1:17It's so there's different ways to think about it.
- 1:19So don't let, if the word boundary's triggering for you,
- 1:21don't let that get in your way. Come up with a new word that
- 1:24works for you. But what it's really for is if
- 1:27you are feeling like you're over giving, you're overworking,
- 1:33you're saying yes when you really want to say no and you
- 1:37want to reclaim your power unapologetically.
- 1:42What happened so many times is we say yes because we don't want
- 1:46someone to feel bad. We say yes because we think
- 1:50someone expects us to. We say yes because we want to,
- 1:54don't want to disappoint or be rejected by someone.
- 1:58And then if we do say no, we are over explaining out of guilt or
- 2:05trying to justify when simply no period is a full sentence.
- 2:11And you don't have to justify choosing what's aligning with
- 2:16you, choosing what's healthiest for you.
- 2:20So many times we think when someone presents a good option
- 2:25or a good opportunity to us, well, it's good.
- 2:27So I must say, yes, no, there are plenty of good things out
- 2:32there. That doesn't mean they're all
- 2:34for you all the time. And so this boundary blueprint
- 2:39really helps you get those things in alignment, get your
- 2:42life feeling back under like it's in alignment and in
- 2:45control. And you're spending your energy
- 2:47on time on places that really fill your cup.
- 2:51You're not looking at your calendar every day going or
- 2:55feeling nauseous or tired or having a headache or wanting to
- 2:59go back to bed and listen. We all have these things that we
- 3:02have to do in our daily lives that we don't love.
- 3:04None of us love scrubbing a toilet, but it's necessary.
- 3:07So I'm not, I'm talking about the, the energy and time we give
- 3:11to people in our friendships, in our workspaces, in our
- 3:15communities, how much time we're giving away versus how much time
- 3:19we're using to fill our own cups to make sure we're not giving
- 3:23from a depleted empty vessel. And So what the blueprint does
- 3:29is it helps you learn how to confidently set and communicate
- 3:33boundaries without guilt. It helps you understand how your
- 3:38health, mental, physical, emotional, spiritual is tied to
- 3:43your limits and your needs. We all have limits and we we
- 3:47ignore those. And so really listening to our
- 3:49bodies when it's when she's telling us we're at our Max
- 3:54point or oh, I think that should be a no.
- 3:56I was literally having this conversation with a friend last
- 3:59night where another friend has presented an opportunity to her
- 4:03and it sounds really good on on paper.
- 4:07And when she talked to her about it, But even though she knows in
- 4:11her like logically it sounds good, there's something inside
- 4:14her that's telling her, making her feel hesitant.
- 4:18And I'm like, listen to that, pay attention to that.
- 4:21This sounds like a good thing, but there's some things about it
- 4:25that make me question. And so I kind of presented that
- 4:28my side to her and gave her another opinion, but it was
- 4:31really inviting to her like that's a clue.
- 4:33So paying attention to those things and, and, and giving and
- 4:38giving credits to that. Practicing scripts and
- 4:43strategies for navigating difficult conversations.
- 4:47And, you know, practicing it in front of the mirror, writing out
- 4:51talking points. So many times these
- 4:54conversations we imagine in our heads end up being in our heads
- 4:58a lot worse than they actually end up being when you have them
- 5:01but navigating them. And if you need help and support
- 5:05on this, again, this is something you can work with me
- 5:07one-on-one on the links will be in our show notes and in our
- 5:10resources page of how to do that.
- 5:13If you need some more practice with this, if this these tips
- 5:17I'm giving you today are like these sound great, but I need
- 5:20some more support. I'm here to help you with that.
- 5:22So, so don't worry about that. We can, we can help you with
- 5:25that if you need to, But these are also things.
- 5:27Try them and see how they feel for you, how they work with you.
- 5:30Do it with a partner or but, but go in there with a plan and then
- 5:36it helps you to build a values aligned filter.
- 5:41Going back to my friend, a nice conversation for what gets your
- 5:45yes and what gets your no. And there's two really important
- 5:51rules here. Or, or principles is a better
- 5:54word that apply that I've learned from guests over the
- 5:57years. And 1 is that whatever you're
- 6:01saying yes to, you're saying no to something else.
- 6:04So make sure you're OK with that thing you're saying no to.
- 6:08And make sure it's not always you that you're saying no to #2
- 6:14do not give a yes immediately. Give yourself 24 hours minimum
- 6:22to go home. Check your calendar, talk to
- 6:25your family, talk to your boss, talk to your friends, your
- 6:29community, whoever is going to be impacted by you saying yes to
- 6:33this. And what is it going to impact
- 6:35that you've already said yes to? So giving yourself 24 hours to
- 6:39really minimum to examine whether this actually fits or if
- 6:43it does fit and there's something else that needs to be
- 6:46adjusted. So those are two really helpful
- 6:48principles. And the lastly, when you decided
- 6:52to know, you don't have to over explain or justify.
- 6:56And if they have trouble with that, you just kindly are ask
- 6:59them to honor your, your decision that you've made it
- 7:04thoughtfully. And that might kind of give you
- 7:06an indication too. If they have trouble with it, if
- 7:09you want to be connected with them in this kind of work in the
- 7:14future or this kind of time in the future, if they need some
- 7:16different healthy boundaries around that relationship, you're
- 7:19if they're not willing to honor your boundary with this.
- 7:21So those are some things that it can really deliver.
- 7:25And then in the results are when you do this, put this time into
- 7:30it and think about it in this way and are willing to, to, to
- 7:33trust yourself in this way, it gives you a clear, unapologetic
- 7:38system for honoring your energy, protecting your time, building
- 7:43deeper, more authentic relationships, and you'll feel
- 7:47more respected, more powerful and more free.
- 7:52And that is the hope for all of us all the time.
- 7:55Now this sounds like, again, like I said earlier, like this
- 7:58boundary blueprint sounds like a great idea, Melissa, But in
- 8:01reality, I am a chronic people pleaser.
- 8:04I am suffer with codependency. There's some things I'm really

- 8:13one-on-one and let me help you find what's already inside of

- 8:32today. And my challenge for you this
- 8:34week is simply when someone asks you to do something or to
- 8:40participate in something or give your time or energy in any way
- 8:43to something, give yourself a minimum of 24 hours before you
- 8:49say yes to it. Honor yourself in that way.
- 8:53You are worthy, you are valuable, and you get to choose.
- 8:58Don't ever forget that. Go to embracinglayers.com and
