- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yor
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order KERNI Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow. Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money podcast that
- 1:00Speaker 3: helps you make smart money moves, just like Taylor Swift,
- 1:03Speaker 3: whose net worth has just been updated to one point
- 1:06Speaker 3: six billion dollars. If you didn't know already, my name
- 1:10Speaker 3: is Victoria Devine. I am a retired financial advisor. I
- 1:13Speaker 3: am scarily a best selling author, and yes, I am
- 1:17Speaker 3: a certified swifty. I mean I did go to Taylor
- 1:21Speaker 3: Swift's concert here in Melbourne at thirty nine weeks pregnant,
- 1:24Speaker 3: and I regret nothing. I was lucky enough to be
- 1:28Speaker 3: at her era's tour, and yes, my friend, it was
- 1:31Speaker 3: as good as you think it was. But while I
- 1:33Speaker 3: was screaming along to literally all of her songs, Taylor
- 1:36Speaker 3: was quietly making financial moves that got her on the
- 1:39Speaker 3: Forbes Billionaire List. If that's not a flex, I don't
- 1:42Speaker 3: know what it is. So today, my friend, we are
- 1:45Speaker 3: marrying my two favorite topics, Taylor Swift and money together,
- 1:49Speaker 3: and we are deep diving into some of those clever
- 1:52Speaker 3: money moves and breaking down how you can maybe take
- 1:55Speaker 3: a page out of miss Taylor Swift's billionaire playbook, even
- 1:58Speaker 3: if your bank account isn't quite there yet neither, So
- 2:02Speaker 3: stick around and we're going to talk about how you're
- 2:05Speaker 3: going to level up your finances Swift style. So before
- 2:09Speaker 3: we dive deep into the lessons, I just want to
- 2:11Speaker 3: take a moment to appreciate how massive Taylor Swift's financial
- 2:16Speaker 3: success is, so beyond her music career, which I think
- 2:19Speaker 3: we can all agree is epic, beyond whether you are
- 2:22Speaker 3: or are not a Swifty I kind of don't care.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I think we can all agree that she is a
- 2:27Speaker 3: financial mastermind. And after officially joining the Forbes Billionaire Club
- 2:33Speaker 3: in twenty twenty three. I didn't even know there was
- 2:35Speaker 3: such club until she was on it, and then I
- 2:37Speaker 3: knew about it. They've just updated her net worth to
- 2:40Speaker 3: be a jaw dropping one point six billion dollars as
- 2:43Speaker 3: of this month thanks to her eras tour which get
- 2:46Speaker 3: this is, brought in over five hundred million dollars, re
- 2:49Speaker 3: recording her albums and making some savvy real estate investments.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Taylor's actually proven that she's not just a musical icon,
- 2:57Speaker 3: She's actually a financial powerhouse. And I wish she'd talk
- 3:01Speaker 3: about it more. So if anyone could just call Taylor
- 3:03Speaker 3: up and get her on money diaries, that would be
- 3:05Speaker 3: a lead. But who doesn't want to take a page
- 3:09Speaker 3: from that playbook? So let's talk about some lessons she
- 3:12Speaker 3: has taught us without actually vocalizing them. The first is
- 3:16Speaker 3: she has a really diverse income stream, so Taylor doesn't
- 3:20Speaker 3: actually just rely on recording a song and putting it
- 3:23Speaker 3: out there. She actually has a whole heap of income streams.
- 3:26Speaker 3: So she's got her tours, she actually has her hand
- 3:29Speaker 3: in everything from merchandise to real estate, which I think
- 3:33Speaker 3: is really important and we can learn from that because
- 3:35Speaker 3: it is so important to diversify our income streams. Arguably
- 3:39Speaker 3: it's essential. It's about making sure that you don't have
- 3:42Speaker 3: all your eggs in one basket. So we talk about
- 3:44Speaker 3: this in the community all the time, like can you
- 3:47Speaker 3: organize a side hustle, could you sell some extra stuff?
- 3:50Speaker 3: Could you start investing? And when you are investing, making
- 3:53Speaker 3: sure you're not just picking one asset because if like
- 3:56Speaker 3: let's say Taylor couldn't sing and she just purchased property,
- 3:59Speaker 3: what if property market was down, she wouldn't have another
- 4:02Speaker 3: income stream to prop that up. And I mean, I
- 4:05Speaker 3: am hoping that the sun shines forever on Taylor Swift,
- 4:09Speaker 3: but right now she's making hey, while the sun is shining,
- 4:12Speaker 3: right she is obviously going ham on the tours while
- 4:15Speaker 3: she is at the peak of her popularity, but she's
- 4:18Speaker 3: also making sure that she's got a heap of merchandise
- 4:20Speaker 3: going out and other places that you can funnel money.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Not only that, but she's dabbling in brand partnerships, which
- 4:26Speaker 3: I think is low key genius. Back to property though,
- 4:30Speaker 3: as you guys maybe or don't know, like I don't know,
- 4:33Speaker 3: maybe I am creepy level of swift Y fan, But
- 4:36Speaker 3: Taylor owns property in the UK and she also owns
- 4:38Speaker 3: it in the US, and she has an estimated eighty
- 4:42Speaker 3: million dollars worth of her money in real estate investments,
- 4:45Speaker 3: which I think is absolutely insane. And back to brand partnerships,
- 4:48Speaker 3: She's not just doing little influencer Instagram posts, which obviously
- 4:52Speaker 3: we wouldn't expect from Taylor anyway, but she's partnering with
- 4:56Speaker 3: key brands that I would say are really aligned to
- 4:58Speaker 3: her target demographic, which is it's very smart, like Diet Coke,
- 5:02Speaker 3: who doesn't love a crispy Diet Coke, who hasn't got
- 5:04Speaker 3: an Apple iPhone in the hands, And she's working with
- 5:07Speaker 3: kids as well, and those have significantly contributed to her wealth.
- 5:11Speaker 3: So that, I guess, is all I want to talk
- 5:13Speaker 3: about when it comes to diversification. If we take anything
- 5:16Speaker 3: from Taylor, it is that diversification is key. The next
- 5:21Speaker 3: is taking control of your narrative and in particular, your
- 5:24Speaker 3: financial narrative. So let's be honest, I think we would
- 5:29Speaker 3: be all living under a rock if we didn't know
- 5:31Speaker 3: that Taylor Swift has re recorded all of her albums
- 5:34Speaker 3: like I Am waiting on baited breath for the next
- 5:38Speaker 3: one to drop, and Taylor has taken absolute control of
- 5:41Speaker 3: her story by choosing to re record her albums, which
- 5:44Speaker 3: she definitely didn't have to do, and refusing to let
- 5:47Speaker 3: business deals define her. And I think that that is
- 5:51Speaker 3: honestly so inspiring. Like she's been through some pretty hard
- 5:54Speaker 3: times which for a lot of people would just push
- 5:57Speaker 3: them completely off the cliff and she would go absolutely not,
- 6:00Speaker 3: like I don't want to do this anymore, like it
- 6:02Speaker 3: is what it is, like, maybe this isn't for me,
- 6:05Speaker 3: But she has taken ownership of her finances by creating
- 6:08Speaker 3: I would say, some pretty clear goals, creating a plan,
- 6:11Speaker 3: sticking to it, and implementing it. I think it's so
- 6:14Speaker 3: important that if you've got a vision and it's not
- 6:16Speaker 3: going where you want it to go, you can change that.
- 6:19Speaker 3: And I mean, she has based a number of significant challenges,
- 6:22Speaker 3: but I don't think anyone would say that she backed
- 6:24Speaker 3: down from them. It is so important that even when
- 6:27Speaker 3: challenges pop up, if you have a clear vision and
- 6:30Speaker 3: you have clear goals, we're still going towards them. So
- 6:33Speaker 3: you're probably up with the gospel if you're not up
- 6:35Speaker 3: with the goss. Taylor had to re record her first
- 6:37Speaker 3: six albums after the rights to her original masters were
- 6:41Speaker 3: sold or stolen, but like, that's alleged, right, and this
- 6:44Speaker 3: actually allowed her to regain complete control and ownership of
- 6:48Speaker 3: her music. So she's used the original names right. So
- 6:51Speaker 3: her album Red is now read but Taylor's version has
- 6:55Speaker 3: sold six hundred and five thousand album equivalent units in
- 6:59Speaker 3: its first week. In its first week, Fearless, Taylor's version
- 7:02Speaker 3: sold two hundred and ninety one thousand aeus, which actually
- 7:06Speaker 3: far outperforms the original. Talk about the community getting behind her,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and then her re records have received immense support right
- 7:13Speaker 3: from me, from fans, and from platforms like iHeartRadio who
- 7:17Speaker 3: are committed to only playing the re recorded versions. I
- 7:20Speaker 3: think that's such a slay anyway, moving on, I have
- 7:23Speaker 3: another lesson written down, and it is that she is
- 7:25Speaker 3: great at adapting and evolving. I don't know about you,
- 7:28Speaker 3: but I became a massive Taylor Swift in her country era.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I thought that I was going to be also a
- 7:34Speaker 3: country singer. Can I sing? Absolutely not? But that is
- 7:36Speaker 3: all I belt it out in my sixteen year old bedroom.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And her career is, I guess, a masterclass in adaptation
- 7:43Speaker 3: and evolution. So each of her ears has represented I
- 7:47Speaker 3: guess a very distinct reinvention from country singer that I
- 7:52Speaker 3: knew and loved when I was young to essentially being
- 7:54Speaker 3: the biggest pop star in the entire world. And maybe
- 7:57Speaker 3: I'm clutching at straws here, but I think that we
- 8:00Speaker 3: could compare this to how financial goals can change over time,
- 8:04Speaker 3: and the need to adapt is going to change as
- 8:07Speaker 3: we grow, as we become interested in different things. So,
- 8:11Speaker 3: for example, eighteen year old Victoria had no interest in
- 8:14Speaker 3: starting a family or moving in with a boy, or
- 8:17Speaker 3: saving or investing, but now I do. Let's look at this.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Her reputation era in particular, I would say marked a
- 8:24Speaker 3: stupidly bold shift, leaning into like darker, moodier, edgier images
- 8:28Speaker 3: with themes of defiance and self empowerment, which I was
- 8:31Speaker 3: obsessed with, like the snake symbolism. You would not have
- 8:35Speaker 3: caught me embracing that. But Taylor turned to all the
- 8:38Speaker 3: criticism that she got from that into I guess, a
- 8:42Speaker 3: badge of resilience and honor, and by consistently reinventing herself
- 8:46Speaker 3: and refreshing who she wants to be, Like the shift
- 8:49Speaker 3: to I guess more pastal colors in her lover era,
- 8:52Speaker 3: She's really kept her brand fresh, relevant and ever evolving.
- 8:55Speaker 3: And I mean that when my team and I went
- 8:57Speaker 3: to the Errors tour, Oh the out and it's on
- 9:00Speaker 3: point and so diverse. All right, I feel like I've
- 9:04Speaker 3: covered some relatively serious ground, also not serious ground, but
- 9:08Speaker 3: there's still more to come. So after the break, we
- 9:10Speaker 3: are going to be diving into how you can actually
- 9:12Speaker 3: negotiate like a billionaire in the making. So my friends,
- 9:15Speaker 3: stick around, welcome back. Now we've covered what I'd say
- 9:22Speaker 3: is adapting your money strategy, like Taylor, Let's now talk
- 9:25Speaker 3: about something that I think she's mastered, and that is
- 9:28Speaker 3: knowing her worth. Like, oh, my gosh, negotiate your worth
- 9:33Speaker 3: is the next lesson or the fourth lesson I want
- 9:35Speaker 3: to talk about. And do you remember back in twenty
- 9:38Speaker 3: fourteen when she took on Spotify, Taylor literally pulled all
- 9:43Speaker 3: her music from Spotify and protested because the platform was
- 9:47Speaker 3: paying artists really low compensation Iconic. She did return in
- 9:52Speaker 3: twenty seventeen after negotiating better terms, but it took her
- 9:56Speaker 3: pulling all of her music off to actually be able
- 9:59Speaker 3: to negotiate that those better terms, and this decision actually
- 10:02Speaker 3: set a precedent for artists advocating for fairst dreaming compensation,
- 10:06Speaker 3: isn't that cool? Her advocacy for herself was also publicly
- 10:11Speaker 3: advocating for others. And I think the importance here is
- 10:14Speaker 3: that negotiating for a raise or a better deal and
- 10:17Speaker 3: alone or even with service providers not that deep. What's
- 10:21Speaker 3: the worst thing? They can say no? And we can
- 10:24Speaker 3: make Like Taylor, if it's not working for you, you can leave,
- 10:26Speaker 3: you can find someone better, You can do better for yourself.
- 10:30Speaker 3: And I think that advocating for yourself is just so necessary.
- 10:34Speaker 3: And I think there seems to be this hang up
- 10:35Speaker 3: that advocating for yourself makes you greedy, when that's not
- 10:38Speaker 3: the case at all. Advocating for yourself brings you higher,
- 10:42Speaker 3: and the higher you get, the higher others get. A
- 10:44Speaker 3: rising tide. My friend lifts all ships. The next thing
- 10:48Speaker 3: I want to talk about is leveraging your personal brand
- 10:51Speaker 3: or she is perfect when we talk about this, like
- 10:54Speaker 3: Taylor's financial success is honestly, it's not just about her music,
- 10:58Speaker 3: It's about her personal brand as a whole. She's crafted
- 11:02Speaker 3: this perfectly curated public persona that evolves with each era
- 11:07Speaker 3: she goes through. So back to what I was talking about,
- 11:09Speaker 3: before from I Guess this Country Innocent Sweetheart to being
- 11:14Speaker 3: the biggest pop icon in the entire world. And building
- 11:18Speaker 3: personal brand can open doors to additional income opportunities and recognition. So,
- 11:23Speaker 3: whether it's in your career, at work as a side hustle,
- 11:27Speaker 3: or maybe your online presence, why don't you leverage who
- 11:30Speaker 3: you are and what you stand for because it can
- 11:33Speaker 3: actually create long term financial success. Whether it's in the background.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You don't even have to have social media for this, right,
- 11:39Speaker 3: but you could be building personal relationships through your professional community.
- 11:43Speaker 3: You could be showing up at events, you could be
- 11:46Speaker 3: engaging in conversations and be open to collaboration. And I
- 11:49Speaker 3: think that that is a really big point. Like it's
- 11:53Speaker 3: also about really backing yourself, and Taylor does that really well. Now,
- 11:57Speaker 3: the next lesson that I have dotted down is planned
- 12:01Speaker 3: for the long game. I mean, she's played it in
- 12:03Speaker 3: every aspect. She'sn't just thinking about next year. She's making
- 12:06Speaker 3: decisions that are gonna benefit her for literal decades. And
- 12:11Speaker 3: I mean she I don't know if you guys have
- 12:13Speaker 3: seen the videos of her on TikTok where people have asked, well,
- 12:16Speaker 3: how did you actually train for the errors tour because
- 12:19Speaker 3: she sings like she full pelts out for three hours,
- 12:22Speaker 3: Like it's actually insane. How she manages to dance and
- 12:25Speaker 3: sing and not lip sync, like it actually blows my mind.
- 12:29Speaker 3: But she is the mastermind of thinking long term. I
- 12:32Speaker 3: don't know if you've seen those videos, but like she
- 12:34Speaker 3: literally stood and ran a marathon on a treadmill while singing.
- 12:38Speaker 3: That's how she did it. And I mean, I'm not
- 12:40Speaker 3: that committed, so I'm not planning on doing that. But
- 12:42Speaker 3: she is literally a master of thinking long term. Her
- 12:45Speaker 3: decision to re record all of her albums and then
- 12:49Speaker 3: regain control over her music rights showed that she not
- 12:52Speaker 3: only has commitment to herself and who she is and
- 12:55Speaker 3: wanting to show them where to shove it, but also
- 12:58Speaker 3: her future earnings and the ownership of her music. And
- 13:00Speaker 3: beyond her music, she invests in other places like real estate,
- 13:04Speaker 3: and she's been strategically planning her career moves to ensure
- 13:08Speaker 3: sustained financial growth and stability. She's an actual icon I mean,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I feel like I could get heaps of you investing
- 13:14Speaker 3: just by sharing that she has a share portfolio and
- 13:16Speaker 3: a financial advisor like iconic behavior. Let's be honest. I
- 13:20Speaker 3: think the importance here is that Taylor clearly gets it.
- 13:24Speaker 3: She's benefiting from compound growth, not only in her career,
- 13:28Speaker 3: where you know, small things are starting to add up,
- 13:31Speaker 3: those decisions are starting to pay dividends, but also her
- 13:33Speaker 3: financial decisions, her share portfolio, her property portfolio. She's just
- 13:37Speaker 3: smart at it. We can do that too, It is
- 13:39Speaker 3: not that hard. The next lesson I've got for you
- 13:42Speaker 3: is a really big one, and it's one that I
- 13:44Speaker 3: have historically struggled with as well, And it's no when
- 13:47Speaker 3: to walk away. So obviously, when Taylor decided to tell
- 13:53Speaker 3: her previous record label, Big Machine Records, to get stuffed,
- 13:57Speaker 3: and she decided to sign with Republic Records, she negotiated
- 14:01Speaker 3: full ownership of her future masters. So like her hystorical
- 14:06Speaker 3: label meant that she didn't own that, but when she
- 14:08Speaker 3: signed with Republic Records, she made sure that if she
- 14:11Speaker 3: was to ever leave again, this wouldn't be an issue.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And this actually allowed her to completely rebuild her career
- 14:18Speaker 3: on her own terms and increased her earning potential significantly.
- 14:23Speaker 3: So I think it's really important to know when to
- 14:25Speaker 3: pull the pin, like you can walk away from a
- 14:28Speaker 3: bad investment, you can walk away from a bad job,
- 14:30Speaker 3: or a bad boyfriend, or a situation that is no
- 14:32Speaker 3: longer serving you. I think it's important that if you're thinking,
- 14:36Speaker 3: maybe I need to start fresh, but ah Vi, I've
- 14:38Speaker 3: invested like seven years in this job. I don't want
- 14:41Speaker 3: to walk away from it now I might get a
- 14:42Speaker 3: promotion like that can be a really hard decision to make.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But if Taylor has taught us anything, it's you need
- 14:49Speaker 3: to own your own narrative. So why not just rewrite
- 14:52Speaker 3: your financial era or your next era here, just like
- 14:55Speaker 3: her journey from literally being a country singer icon, like
- 14:59Speaker 3: no one I would have guessed at that point, she
- 15:01Speaker 3: would become the world's biggest pop star, you can actually
- 15:05Speaker 3: choose to evolve your finances and your choices. If your
- 15:09Speaker 3: values are currently at odds with your beliefs, that can change.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Maybe it's time that you negotiate that raise, or start investing,
- 15:17Speaker 3: or start diversifying your income stream, whatever it is. I
- 15:20Speaker 3: think we should just make it big. So this weekend,
- 15:23Speaker 3: obviously I want you to listen to some Taylor Swift,
- 15:25Speaker 3: but I want you to also channel you inner Taylor mate.
- 15:28Speaker 3: If she can re record all of her albums, and
- 15:30Speaker 3: take back control. You can absolutely own your financial future.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And while you're at it, my friend, don't forget to
- 15:37Speaker 3: subscribe because, like Taylor, I would say that we have
- 15:40Speaker 3: plenty of hits to still come. And I mean, if
- 15:42Speaker 3: Taylor knew about this podcast, obviously should be subscribed, So like,
- 15:45Speaker 3: get ahead of the curve. I'm off to enjoy the weekend.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I literally am going to put on my eras to
- 15:51Speaker 3: a concert playlist on Spotify. Thank you for negotiating yourself
- 15:54Speaker 3: back there, Taylor. I'm going to be dancing in my
- 15:56Speaker 3: living room and I will see you on Monday for
- 15:59Speaker 3: another money.
