- 0:01SPEAKER_00: My mind tends to wander when I meditate and I bet yours does too.
- 0:07And really that's not a problem because it's just part of your
- 0:12present moment experience.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Welcome to my substack,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: my podcast,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: this YouTube video on my YouTube channel,
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: if that's where you found it,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: wherever you have found this content offering,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: welcome.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: I'm Amy Schlerb.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: I am a mindfulness and mindset coach.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And yeah, like I said, my mind likes to wander when I meditate.
- 0:35Sometimes it goes off into the future and sometimes it goes
- 0:39wandering and rummaging
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: around in my past.
- 0:43And sometimes it tries to offer solutions to problems I'm
- 0:46currently facing in my life.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Look, a mind is going to do what a mind is going to do.
- 0:54But the good news is that when I practice mindfulness
- 0:57meditation,
- 0:57I am not my wandering mind.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I am the observer of my wandering mind.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like a parent watching a toddler on the playground.
- 1:10So pretend for a minute that you're a parent and you're sitting
- 1:13on the bench in a
- 1:16shady area and you're watching your toddler on the playground
- 1:19and they're wandering
- 1:20over to the slide and then they wander over to the swings and
- 1:23then they wander over
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: to the sandbox.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And you don't care where your toddler goes on the playground.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You don't judge their choice of activity.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: You just observe them, right?
- 1:35And maybe occasionally you have to step in and redirect the
- 1:38toddler for whatever reason.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 1:40they've taken another kid's toy or they've left the playground
- 1:44altogether to chase
- 1:45after a ball or they wandered in front of the big kids on the
- 1:49swings and they're
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: about to get knocked over.
- 1:51Like you have to redirect them because of safety concerns,
- 1:56but you just redirect them gently.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It's no big deal.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And it's the same with mindfulness meditation.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I observe my mind contemplating what I want to make for dinner.
- 2:11I observe my mind thinking about a personal problem that I'm
- 2:18currently dealing with
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: and offering solutions.
- 2:21I observe my mind drawing a parallel between how my mind
- 2:26wanders and how toddlers
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: wander around on playgrounds and then starts to write this substack.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm just observing my mind.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: I'm just watching my mind.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I'm just letting my mind do what a mind is going to do.
- 2:41And as long as I stay aware that I'm watching my mind and all
- 2:48that it's doing in
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: the present moment,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I'm practicing mindfulness.
- 2:55So throughout,
- 2:56I stay focused on my breath,
- 2:58much like the parent stays present on the bench.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: They don't wander away from the playground.
- 3:03They're not like,
- 3:03later,
- 3:04kid,
- 3:04I'm going to go to Starbucks and I'll be back.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: No, they stay present on the bench and they watch their child.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And likewise, I stay present and I watch my mind.
- 3:19And I'm ready to gently redirect my mind back to the experience
- 3:23of my breath each
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: time it wanders like completely away from the present moment.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, I observe that I'm thinking about making spaghetti for dinner.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And right now I'm going to gently return my focus to my breath.
- 3:41Ah,
- 3:42I'm thinking that I could call so-and-so to get help with that
- 3:45problem.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And right now, I'm going to gently return my focus to my breath.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Oh boy, I just had a great idea for a substack.
- 3:57It's going to be about a parent and a playground and a
- 3:59wandering toddler and all of
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: this stuff and how that relates to meditating.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, no, no, no.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Wait, wait, wait.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Right now, I'm going to gently return my focus to my breath.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Because our wandering mind is not the problem.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: It's part of the present moment.
- 4:20And the best thing that you can do for yourself and your
- 4:23mindfulness practice is to
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: really lean into this idea of noticing and gently refocusing.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: So like a parent watching their kid on the playground.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Gentle, gentle, gentle.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Be gentle with your mind.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: All the time, be gentle with your mind.
- 4:47Be gentle with yourself while you're meditating,
- 4:50while you're practicing meditation.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And that's going to make your mindfulness practice so much more pleasant,
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: so much more enjoyable.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And then that gentleness,
- 5:04that caretaking of your mind is going to start to ripple out
- 5:08into how you caretake
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: yourself
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: in your larger life, in your life in general.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And if you want help with all this mindfulness stuff,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: if you're ready to transform your actor mindset,
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: let's connect in a complimentary session.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Now this is not a sales call.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I don't think that I could sell bread to a bread slicer.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not a salesy person at all.
- 5:39My only intention with this complimentary session is that you
- 5:42leave feeling deeply
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: seen and heard.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And beyond that,
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I hope that you leave feeling inspired,
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: uplifted,
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: and emboldened with some new insights,
- 5:53some new ideas that you can consider and implement in your life
- 5:57and your acting
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: career immediately.
- 6:00And after we've both had a chance to let the experience of that
- 6:04session settle for
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: us,
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: maybe we continue coaching together in some kind of more formal coaching
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: arrangement,
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: or maybe our time together feels complete.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And either way, it's a win-win.
