SPEAKER_01: Exploitation films are not so much a genre, but an idea.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_01: What is the most shocking trend that can be put on screen?
• 0:25
SPEAKER_01: While exploitation has long been a part of film history, it experienced a boom in the 60s and 70s when censorship decided to allow a little more wiggle room in media.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_01: Drive-ins and indie theaters called Splatter or Grind Houses became the popular home for these flicks.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_01: Made quickly and often cheaply in order to capitalize on current events, exploitation films explored taboo subjects about sex, crime, and war, among other things.
• 0:54
SPEAKER_01: But don't write them off as trash.
• 0:57
SPEAKER_01: Many exploitation films like A Clockwork Orange, The Last House on the Left, Night of the Living Dead, and The Hills Have Eyes are now considered classics.
• 1:16
SPEAKER_01: My name is Parker, your resident horror fanatic.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_03: I'm Caroline, Scaredy Scream Queen.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm Ian, Scary Movie Skeptic.

SPEAKER_03: Damn hairs over there, they got some eyes.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_01: Welcome to part two of our spring break extravaganza.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_01: This time we're hitting the road.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_01: A little uh RV trip, just the three of us, but uh-oh.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_01: We happen to be on a government nuclear testing site.
• 2:29
  SPEAKER_04: Nuclear testosterone.
• 2:31
  SPEAKER_01: And it's 1977.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_01: We've warped back in time, and here we are watching The Hills Have Eyes.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_01: Not 2006 remake, Torture Porn Era Alexander Aja.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_01: But the original, written, directed, and edited by Wes Craven.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_01: And I guess we're just becoming Wes Craven completists here because he is the man behind Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_01: So before long, we'll just have them all under our belts.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about this more later, but Craven had just risen to fame with his debut feature, The Last House on the Left, from 1972.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_04: He was Craven for something new.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we'll discuss he was not craving this type of movie at all, but unfortunately, not unfortunately, but the world brought him to the Hills Have Eyes.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_03: Don't know what that means.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_03: But in this movie, we have Susan Lanier as Brenda, Michael Berryman as Pluto, who was also in The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 from 1984, and The Devil's Rejects in 2005.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_03: Dee Wallace plays the role of Lynn.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_03: She was in The Howling in 1981.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_03: Oh, Eat Tea in 1982, and Critters in 1986.
• 4:04
  SPEAKER_01: That's it, folks.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_01: You know, I just I had spoiler, not seen this before, and I was like, who do I even write down?
• 4:11
SPEAKER_01: And then when I was thinking about who else I would like to write down after this, I was like, you know, I don't even know.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_01: And none of these people are in anything I know because we're young.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_01: So if you are like, they did not mention my favorite actor from the Hills Have Eyes.
• 4:28
  SPEAKER_01: Well, start a podcast.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_03: What's that baby doing these days?
• 4:32
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 4:33
SPEAKER_01: Write in and tell us at scarymoviepod at gmail.com.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_04: That'd be quite the find if you could figure out who the baby was.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_01: What if that baby was like Jennifer Aniston or something?
• 4:43
  SPEAKER_04: Doubt it.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_03: No, Jennifer Aniston is too old to be that baby.
• 4:47
  SPEAKER_03: What years is it?
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_01: 1977.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's probably too old.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_03: How old is she?
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_01: I would guess she's 45.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_03: I think she's probably in her fifties.
• 4:57
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 4:58
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm always a bad age judge.
• 5:01
  SPEAKER_01: I'll look it up.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_01: If she was in her late twenties and the nineties for friends, then here we are 20 years later.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm late forties, early fifties.
• 5:10
  SPEAKER_04: Parker's summary.
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_04: Gasp.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_04: The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is 64% and the audience score is 54%.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_03: Wait, can I ask you a question?
• 5:35
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sure.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_03: If you're a cannibal, does that mean you just include human flesh into your diet amongst other meats?
• 5:44
SPEAKER_03: Or do you exclusively eat human flesh?
• 5:46
SPEAKER_01: They were eating plenty of stuff.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_01: They took the uh raw beef out of those uh camper's fridge.
• 5:52
  SPEAKER_03: I know.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_03: This is why I raised the question.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_03: Would we consider them cannibals that they're eating other types of meat?
• 5:59
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because if I just reached out and ate a chunk out of your arm right now, you'd call me cannibal.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_01: But I don't eat just your arm.
• 6:08
  SPEAKER_01: You know?
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_04: The critic's consensus is quote, when it's not bludgeoning the v- He's eating a feast of human flesh right now.
• 6:22
SPEAKER_04: The critic's consensus is quote, when it's not bludgeoning the viewer with its more off-putting, cruder elements, the Hills Have Eyes wields some clever storytelling with a sly sense of dark humor.
• 6:38
  SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_01: You uh French man came out at the end there.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_04: I have been studying wine.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_01: So The Hills Have Eyes, one of our, again, earlier entries, not early, but one of our earlier in time entries in the chronology of the films we've watched here on What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
• 7:00
SPEAKER_01: You'll notice this movie harkens back to some of the others that we've watched.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_01: But all that aside, viewing experience today, what did you think?
• 7:11
  SPEAKER_04: It's been a while since I had a sleeper.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_04: And if you're a longtime listener on the podcast, there's the Ian sleep scale.
• 7:21
SPEAKER_01: And uh I feel like it wasn't that long ago that you slept through a movie.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_01: I think you slept through an American werewolf in London.
• 7:28
SPEAKER_01: That was like two weeks ago.
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_04: I didn't sleep, but I was heavy-eyed.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_03: There are certain types of movies that bring out Ian's sleeper, and this one definitely fits that genre.
• 7:40
  SPEAKER_01: A little old.
• 7:41
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a little old.
• 7:42
SPEAKER_03: Lots of girls who just like scream non-stop.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_01: I will not have any of this uh screaming girls thing because uh you get raped and then have your family murdered.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_01: I would scream as well.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_03: It's not about the screaming, it's the type of screaming.
• 7:59
SPEAKER_03: There is a certain type of screaming that comes from horror films produced in this era.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if it's just like directing-wise, they're like, oh yes, give me more of this type of scream.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_03: But it's all very similar.
• 8:16
  SPEAKER_01: I have empathy.
• 8:17
SPEAKER_01: I would also be in hysterics.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_03: I do too, but like it's this one specific tone and type of scream.
• 8:25
  SPEAKER_01: You're heartless.
• 8:26
  SPEAKER_01: Heartless.
• 8:27
  SPEAKER_03: Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
• 8:29
SPEAKER_03: That's where it comes from.
• 8:31
  SPEAKER_04: Heartless.
• 8:32
SPEAKER_03: That one screaming lady who just the least favorite movie we've watched.
• 8:36
  SPEAKER_03: Woo.
• 8:36
  SPEAKER_03: Anyways.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_03: Um I I wouldn't say it was a sleeper for me, but um, not my movie.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_04: Not your cup of black tea.
• 8:50
SPEAKER_01: You know, I had not seen this movie before, as stated.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_01: I have seen the remake, but I was very young.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_01: I watched it with my babysitter, Jordan.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_01: She bought it for me.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_01: But um, which, you know, pretty risky film to buy a young person.
• 9:05
  SPEAKER_02: That's true.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_01: But um how old were you?
• 9:08
  SPEAKER_01: Like 14, 15.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_04: Was it you that we had this conversation about babysitting?
• 9:13
  SPEAKER_04: Yes.
• 9:14
  SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
• 9:14
  SPEAKER_04: Because I bought screenplay.
• 9:15
SPEAKER_04: I was trying to remember.
• 9:16
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_01: Um, anyway, but so I had not seen this, and I feel like every time I'm going to watch a film from the 70s or earlier, I'm always like, ugh.
• 9:27
SPEAKER_01: And then I'm always a little bit surprised that they're not as bad as I think they're going to be.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_01: And some people who might be listening of a certain age might be like, oh, these young folks.
• 9:38
  SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
• 9:39
  SPEAKER_01: That's where we are.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, tune out if you don't like we are young folks.
• 9:44
  SPEAKER_03: What is it?
• 9:45
  SPEAKER_03: Some weird word.
• 9:47
  SPEAKER_03: Folks.
• 9:48
  SPEAKER_03: Hey, folks.
• 9:50
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm from the South.
• 9:51
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, me too.
• 9:53
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 9:53
  SPEAKER_01: Me.
• 9:54
  SPEAKER_01: No.
• 9:56
  SPEAKER_01: So anyway, anyway.
• 9:59
SPEAKER_03: You say folks a lot.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_04: I say folks and dandy and we're getting distracted.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_01: So speaking of all this, you know, southern country talk, here we are in the deserts of Nevada.
• 10:12
  SPEAKER_04: Drier than my skin.
• 10:16
  SPEAKER_01: Gross.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, if it's drier than your skin, your skin could be very moist right now.
• 10:22
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 10:23
  SPEAKER_01: Um, anyway.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was uh surprised.
• 10:27
SPEAKER_01: I thought that I think the costuming leaves a little to be desired, in my opinion.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_01: But besides that, I thought visually I'm enjoying what I'm seeing.
• 10:40
SPEAKER_01: Uh some of the um quick zooms uh I thought were comedic and fun.
• 10:46
SPEAKER_01: But then some of the uh maybe it's just the product of the era because obviously there's a certain grain to a film filmed on.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_01: I believe I read this was 16 millimeter, but there's a certain grain to it uh that just makes it feel icky to me.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_01: I felt disturbed watching this because I was like, ooh, like I do not enjoy seeing what I am seeing right now.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_01: And so, um I'm not saying I love it, but it was effective to me.
• 11:17
  SPEAKER_01: The film starts.
• 11:18
SPEAKER_01: We have, as mentioned earlier, a family headed out.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_01: They're headed to California, but they're going to make a stop for were they saying silver mines?
• 11:29
SPEAKER_01: Are there silver mines that they're looking for?
• 11:32
  SPEAKER_01: Could be.
• 11:33
SPEAKER_01: Something that has to do with silver.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_01: I was having some trouble discerning what people were saying at certain parts.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_04: They may be from Ohio too, because he had an Ohio State shirt on.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_04: Oh it was in green and gray, and that makes no sense because Ohio State, which was the shirt, is scarlet and gray.
• 11:52
SPEAKER_04: So I found that very odd because Ohio University is green.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_03: Ian's from Ohio, if you didn't know.
• 12:01
  SPEAKER_04: I'm just saying.
• 12:03
SPEAKER_04: They wore that shirt intentionally.
• 12:04
SPEAKER_01: I would definitely say somewhere east because you know their daughter has moved to New York City because she never used that kind of language until she moved to New York City.
• 12:16
SPEAKER_01: So they've come somewhere from perhaps the northeast and they're making their way down to California for a little family vacay.
• 12:25
SPEAKER_04: And they think Ohio is the place because they're you know, they're in the middle, they're traveling west.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_04: She went to the east, their smack dab in Middle America.
• 12:37
  SPEAKER_01: Well, okay.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: So they they stop at this gas station where there's this guy who just you can't understand a word out of his mouth, but we know that we find out that he is the father of the patriarch of this cannibal clan, and that he has been kind of a liaison between them and the outside world.
• 13:03
SPEAKER_01: Although the son, who goes on to be the head of this clan, killed his wife and daughter.
• 13:11
SPEAKER_01: So I have no idea why he has been friends with him for this long, because I wouldn't.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_01: But regardless, he tells his family don't go out to wherever this silver anniversary thing activity you're going to do.
• 13:25
SPEAKER_01: Just go straight to California, stay on the interstate, and you'll be there in no time.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_01: But they don't heed his words.
• 13:33
SPEAKER_01: They go out on this side road, they're like attacked by military jets, and then a rabbit in the center of the road throws them off and they crash.
• 13:44
SPEAKER_03: That rabbit just really got me.
• 13:47
  SPEAKER_03: It was pretty fun.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_03: Like zoomed in on it really quick.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_03: Happening, and then there's a little bunny in the middle of the road.
• 13:55
SPEAKER_01: Well, they're in a pickle to say the least, and they do what you should never do in a horror movie.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_01: They all decide to split up.
• 14:03
SPEAKER_01: Dad's gonna go back to the gas station.
• 14:06
  SPEAKER_03: At sunset, no less.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_01: Son-in-law is going to pack out to a uh government facility, I guess, that they saw on a map nearby, and everyone else is just gonna chill.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_01: Now they have two dogs, Beauty and Beast, which I thought they were saying Judy.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_01: And then Caroline was like, Beauty, beast?
• 14:25
  SPEAKER_01: I was like, what?
• 14:27
SPEAKER_01: Another story about, you know, people not understanding each other.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_01: You got the beast in his castle, you got the townspeople, they don't get each other.
• 14:38
SPEAKER_01: Maybe something similar happening here.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, these cannibals, a little aggressive, they come in and they just start ripping shit up, and uh, you know, they rape the daughter.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_01: Uh what was her name?
• 14:52
  SPEAKER_01: Brenda.
• 14:53
SPEAKER_01: They rape Brenda, they kill Lynn, they kill the mom, they crucify the dad and set him on fire.
• 15:03
SPEAKER_01: And uh this family gets in a few punches too.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_01: They sick their dog on Pluto, who is kind of the poster villain for this movie.
• 15:14
  SPEAKER_01: They stab Father Jupiter.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_01: Luckily, they have a daughter, Ruby, who is ready to help them out with that baby and get their baby back to them.
• 15:23
SPEAKER_01: But it is just kind of chaos.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_03: What happened to the mom?
• 15:28
  SPEAKER_01: She died.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_01: No, the Oh, the cannibal mom.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_01: She was just chilling in that cave.
• 15:33
SPEAKER_01: She was just napping the whole movie, and sometimes they'd say something, and she'd be like, What?
• 15:38
SPEAKER_04: Probably drinking some homemade hooch.
• 15:41
  SPEAKER_04: Perhaps.
• 15:42
  SPEAKER_04: Cave hooch.
• 15:43
  SPEAKER_02: Cave hoochine.
• 15:46
  SPEAKER_01: Overall, it's a pretty simple story.
• 15:48
  SPEAKER_01: Just people dying.
• 15:49
  SPEAKER_01: I'd say.
• 15:50
SPEAKER_01: Some gore, a lot of blood squirting, but not as much.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_01: It's kind of a similar situation to like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween, where people are like, it's so scary, it's so gross and icky.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_01: But it's not if you really think about it.
• 16:05
SPEAKER_01: They have their couple of uh standout moments of gore like Pluto's ankle.
• 16:12
SPEAKER_01: Um can't get away from it.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_03: Yo, the dog really just saved the day.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, honestly, if Beast hadn't been out there, what would they have done?
• 16:21
SPEAKER_01: German Shepherds for the win.
• 16:24
  SPEAKER_01: Precisely.
• 16:26
SPEAKER_01: But and then y'all kind of giggled at a very sudden ending where Doug has kind of attacked Father Jupiter and a snake involved, which I cannot handle.
• 16:39
  SPEAKER_01: I was on edge.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_01: I had my fingers over my eyeballs, didn't want to see it.
• 16:45
  SPEAKER_01: Well, I just could hard I can't.
• 16:47
  SPEAKER_01: If there's one thing I can't stand, it's snakes.
• 16:50
SPEAKER_01: I still watched it though, but I was on edge.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_01: And so it ends on Doug stabbing Jupiter over and over and over again and cuts away.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_03: No, it doesn't cut away.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_03: The background goes blood red, he turns into a cartoon, and then it rolls credits.
• 17:09
SPEAKER_03: That's the part that I was giggling at.
• 17:12
SPEAKER_03: I mean also the shots right beforehand, it's like him in a blue sky zooming in of his just stabs over and over again.
• 17:23
SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that there's a reason for that, maybe of what this film is trying to say.
• 17:31
  SPEAKER_01: Any thoughts?
• 17:32
SPEAKER_01: Any thoughts about what the uh the intention, the message of this movie might be?
• 17:38
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just two different cultures, differing perspectives, but at the end of the day, they're just trying to protect themselves and survive.
• 17:49
SPEAKER_04: I mean, if you want to be a cannibal.
• 17:51
SPEAKER_03: No, they didn't have any food out there.
• 17:53
SPEAKER_03: So they're just they're hunting, you know?
• 17:56
SPEAKER_01: Well, and you're pretty close to uh what Wes Craven himself has said is the purpose of this movie.
• 18:02
SPEAKER_01: He said he wanted to make a movie that was, you know, you have your normal people and your villains, and what happens is that they end up being kind of mirror images of each other, and at the end, they're all equal, they're all doing the same thing.
• 18:18
SPEAKER_01: And what happens when you're put into this dangerous situation?
• 18:22
SPEAKER_01: We all are, you know, taken to the same level.
• 18:25
SPEAKER_01: They're all willing to do the same things to each other, even if one side seems like the civilized side, everyone's equal in the survivor.
• 18:34
SPEAKER_01: So I thought that was pretty interesting.
• 18:37
SPEAKER_01: Uh, so Wes Craven, he makes Last House on the Left, and suddenly he is famous.
• 18:44
SPEAKER_01: Last House on the Left has kind of been added to horror history as one of the early classics, not early, but like 70s classics.
• 18:54
SPEAKER_01: And uh Craven actually wanted to leave horror afterwards, but was having trouble finding anyone to support him not making horror because he had kind of established his calling card as an exploitation film creator, which is where you take this kind of dark, uh provocative idea and make a movie around it, like this movie.
• 19:16
SPEAKER_01: And it they all kind of have the same kind of, like I was saying earlier, gross, homemade kind of uh sick quality to them.
• 19:27
SPEAKER_01: So he wanted to make not a horror movie, but his friend, who is producer, Peter Locke, said that he'd fund something if it was an exploitation flick similar to Last House on the Left.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_01: So that's what Craven did, but claimed this time he wanted to do something more sophisticated, not about human depravity.
• 19:47
SPEAKER_01: So he goes on to make The Hills Have Eyes.
• 19:51
SPEAKER_01: And it may seem like Old Hat now, is what I wrote.
• 19:54
  SPEAKER_01: Old Hat.
• 19:56
SPEAKER_01: But at the time, the idea of depicting uh the violence and the absolute worst that humans are capable of was still a pretty exciting idea.
• 20:07
SPEAKER_01: So people were pretty eager to see more from Craven because this movie was pretty successful and it's gone down as a cult classic in horror history.
• 20:15
SPEAKER_01: Uh, the other thing that I like about this movie is that until the 70s, film and other pop culture, you know, media were focused on very black and white ideas of light versus dark, having clear heroes and villains.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_01: As we've seen in our other 70s films, that line starts blurring because this was all during a time of such political unrest when the classic images of authority and community began showing their darker sides.
• 20:45
SPEAKER_01: And in a second, we might just hit on that old Vietnam War.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_01: Similarly to what we discussed in our Texas Chainsaw Massacre uh episode, because Wes Craven, when he was making the hills have eyes, was very inspired by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
• 21:09
  SPEAKER_03: Makes sense.
• 21:10
SPEAKER_01: He was also influenced by something called the legend of Sonny Bean.
• 21:19
  SPEAKER_03: What?
• 21:20
SPEAKER_01: Any guesses on what Sonny Bean would be?
• 21:23
  SPEAKER_03: Bean or beam?
• 21:25
  SPEAKER_01: Bean.
• 21:27
  SPEAKER_01: Nope.
• 21:28
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'll just spoil it right now.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_01: Sonny Bean, according to legend, was the leader of a 16th century Scottish clan.
• 21:37
  SPEAKER_01: Mmm.
• 21:39
SPEAKER_01: This clan was apprehended for slaughtering and cannibalizing over 1,000 people.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_01: Their numbers were maintained by inbreeding.
• 21:48
SPEAKER_01: What drew Craven to this story, however, wasn't the crazy horrific things that this clan was doing, but rather the way they were punished.
• 21:59
  unknown: They were
• 22:00
SPEAKER_01: Executed by being hanged, drawn, and quartered.
• 22:03
SPEAKER_01: Now I was like, I don't know what that is.
• 22:06
SPEAKER_03: So cut your genitals off.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, pretty much.
• 22:10
SPEAKER_01: But here's straight from Wikipedia the entire extent of what it is, because it was complicated.
• 22:16
SPEAKER_01: It says the convicted traitor was fastened to a hurdle or wooden panel and drawn by horse to the place of execution, where he was then hanged almost to the point of death, then emasculated, disemboweled, beheaded, and quartered, chopped into four pieces.
• 22:35
SPEAKER_01: His remains would then uh often be displayed in a prominent place across the country, such as the London Bridge, uh, to serve as a warning of the fate for traitors.
• 22:46
SPEAKER_01: For reasons of public decency, obviously, Caroline take note.
• 22:50
SPEAKER_01: Women convicted of high treason were instead burned at the stake.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_01: Yes, so you've got it a little easier.
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_01: Would you rather be burned or would you be hanged to the point of death and then have your weenie chopped off and be split into four pieces?
• 23:12
SPEAKER_03: Okay, here's my way out.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_03: When they tie you to this wooden beam and drag you, purposefully just hit your head really hard, and then you're out.
• 23:26
SPEAKER_01: But say that you can't pull that off.
• 23:30
  SPEAKER_01: Which would you prefer?
• 23:31
SPEAKER_01: Being burned or hanged, uh, what was it?
• 23:36
  SPEAKER_01: Hanged, drawn, and quartered.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_01: I think I might would rather be burned.
• 23:43
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 23:44
SPEAKER_01: Be cut into four pieces?
• 23:45
  SPEAKER_01: That sounds horrible.
• 23:47
  SPEAKER_01: It all sounds terrible.
• 23:50
  SPEAKER_01: Hanging and burning.
• 23:52
  SPEAKER_01: But what's the difference?
• 23:54
  SPEAKER_03: I'm a witch, so I would survive.
• 23:56
SPEAKER_01: No, the witches don't survive.
• 23:58
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, damn it.
• 24:00
SPEAKER_01: They survive being drowned, right?
• 24:02
SPEAKER_01: No, witches don't survive being drowned.
• 24:04
SPEAKER_01: No, they do survive being drowned.
• 24:07
SPEAKER_01: Because if they threw you in a river and you sunk to the bottom and died, you weren't a witch.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_01: But if you floated back up to the water to do that, you were.
• 24:16
  SPEAKER_01: No.
• 24:16
SPEAKER_01: You just died either way.
• 24:18
  SPEAKER_01: That's kind of terrible.
• 24:19
SPEAKER_03: Well, that's the whole irony of killing witches.
• 24:23
SPEAKER_01: All of the witch trial stuff was like, we're gonna do a test to figure out if you're a witch, but you're gonna die either way.
• 24:29
  SPEAKER_03: Right.
• 24:29
SPEAKER_01: So anyway, so Craven viewed the sentence that they were subjected to to be just as barbaric as the crime.
• 24:37
SPEAKER_01: And so he wanted to again make a movie about how, you know, what you might see as civilized and what you might see as different or other, in the end, we're all just, you know, here to survive.
• 24:51
SPEAKER_04: Don't humans float though when they drown?
• 24:54
SPEAKER_01: Uh depends on like air, and once you like blow it up, then you're gonna float back up to the surface.
• 25:00
SPEAKER_01: So if you were thrown into a river and you did like a like and you held all of your air in, but what I would guess is they throw you in a river, you scream, and then you're gonna float sink to the bottom.
• 25:10
SPEAKER_01: And then you'll float up later.
• 25:12
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, when you're dead.
• 25:13
  SPEAKER_01: Oh never mind.
• 25:14
SPEAKER_03: That's why if you ever want to dispose of a body in a body of water, gotta weigh it down.
• 25:20
SPEAKER_01: Tips for all of our murderers out there.
• 25:23
  SPEAKER_03: You're welcome.
• 25:24
SPEAKER_01: Alright, so I think that the politics of the Hills Have Eyes are pretty similar to those of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was only three years prior to the Hills Have Eyes in 1974.
• 25:38
SPEAKER_01: Uh, the large idea that Craven was interested in tossing around, as I just said, was about equality, how we're all capable of the same cruelty, hatred, and violence in the end.
• 25:48
SPEAKER_01: The cannibal clan and the two families or and the family that are trapped in their grasp are mirrors of each other.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: They just don't understand each other.
• 25:56
SPEAKER_01: You know, it's about if they had just opened a dialogue between the two groups, maybe we wouldn't have gotten into this sticky situation.
• 26:04
SPEAKER_03: They're all just families, man.
• 26:06
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
• 26:07
SPEAKER_01: And who do you look out for?
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_01: Each other family.
• 26:10
SPEAKER_04: Do you think babies are the equivalent to um like uh what's like baby lamb meat?
• 26:19
  SPEAKER_03: Veal.
• 26:19
  SPEAKER_04: Veal.
• 26:20
SPEAKER_03: I was thinking that the whole time.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_04: Is that why they're so excited about it?
• 26:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, veal is uh I'm gonna go ahead and say right now it's a tenderloin, is what they call her.
• 26:30
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but well, maybe they don't know what veal is.
• 26:33
SPEAKER_01: They say, give me that tenderloin.
• 26:35
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 26:35
  SPEAKER_03: But a veal.
• 26:42
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
• 26:46
SPEAKER_03: And you don't want this is really sad, but with veal, they actually take the baby calf and tie its legs together so it can't run around and build muscle because that's what makes steak chewy.
• 26:58
SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's what he says uh when he abducts a baby.
• 27:02
SPEAKER_01: He looked at the baby and then at Brenda, and he says, Both so nice and fat, you look juicy or something like that.
• 27:10
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, he he's on your page.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_01: He's like, These babies haven't worked out a day in their lives.
• 27:16
  SPEAKER_01: Give me a slice.
• 27:18
SPEAKER_03: Have you ever had veal?
• 27:20
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 27:20
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 27:21
  unknown: That's good.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_01: Well, he takes two very different slices from those babies.
• 27:27
  SPEAKER_03: I know.
• 27:28
SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I can't help but like it.
• 27:32
  SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
• 27:35
  SPEAKER_03: Sorry, baby cow.
• 27:38
  SPEAKER_01: I thought it was a fish.
• 27:42
  SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
• 27:43
SPEAKER_03: Have you never had veal?
• 27:44
  SPEAKER_03: Oh.
• 27:44
  SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
• 27:45
  SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean, I don't I've had a lot of beef.
• 27:48
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you have.
• 27:49
  SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
• 27:51
  SPEAKER_01: Back to the cannibals.
• 27:53
SPEAKER_01: Thinking about cannibals, thematically, I would argue it's not necessarily about eating other humans, but maybe about eating yourself or your kind if you smell what I'm stepping in.
• 28:08
SPEAKER_01: Which can be interpreted in a few different ways for this movie.
• 28:14
SPEAKER_01: I wrote down two different thoughts.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_01: And of course, so I did some research beforehand, so like this is me, you know.
• 28:20
  SPEAKER_01: No?
• 28:21
  SPEAKER_03: You did?
• 28:22
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
• 28:22
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_01: Me extrapolating versus off uh based off of what I just saw and kind of some different ideas that I had read before.
• 28:29
SPEAKER_01: So this film, first of all, was released only two years after the end of the Vietnam War.
• 28:36
SPEAKER_01: By its conclusion, it was reported that two-thirds of the United States believed America's involvement in the war was a mistake.
• 28:45
SPEAKER_01: Especially the youth who were subjected to the draft.
• 28:48
SPEAKER_01: They saw the war as the government expending its own people carelessly for political power over others.
• 28:56
SPEAKER_01: Does that sound like cannibalism to you or what?
• 29:00
SPEAKER_01: The government eating its own for sustenance.
• 29:04
SPEAKER_03: And really, you know, war battles.
• 29:09
  SPEAKER_03: We just watched one.
• 29:10
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
• 29:11
SPEAKER_03: They're on someone else's territory, but like people that are similar to them, they just it's different cultures, like I said.
• 29:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people pitted against each other without having communication.
• 29:23
  SPEAKER_01: Pit.
• 29:24
SPEAKER_01: The other thing that I was thinking about, this can also involve the class divide that was and still is a prominent issue in the US.
• 29:34
SPEAKER_01: How many times have you heard the phrase the rich eating the poor?
• 29:39
  SPEAKER_03: Not a lot.
• 29:40
  SPEAKER_03: Never.
• 29:41
SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, you people, you need to get out more.
• 29:44
SPEAKER_01: Just like the all-powerful Sawyers who were eating the liberal peace movement youth in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the um Jupiter clan here are doing the same.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_01: But the politics here are a bit more mixed because the air quotes civilized family are the ones who are outwardly depicted as the bourgeois.
• 30:07
SPEAKER_01: Uh that's where Craven's ideas about leveling the playing field come in.
• 30:10
SPEAKER_01: The upper crust aren't superior.
• 30:13
SPEAKER_01: It's merely a matter of outlook because we're all same we're all the same in the end, bar our circumstances.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_01: So I do think that there's something to to uh chew on from this movie, if you hear what I'm saying.
• 30:29
SPEAKER_04: Like he was chewing on that human meat.
• 30:31
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
• 30:32
  SPEAKER_01: Disturbing.
• 30:33
SPEAKER_01: And then my other thought is that in the legacy of horror.
• 30:38
  SPEAKER_00: Horror.
• 30:39
SPEAKER_01: This film did kind of jumpstart.
• 30:41
SPEAKER_01: I would say not a movement, but you see kind of every once in a while you get a similar movie, like Wrong Turn or the Cannibal Holocaust in 1980, where it's just this group of cannibals, a tribe or uh, you know, maybe a group that partakes in inbreeding.
• 31:00
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes they look like these big deformed monsters, sometimes they look a little bit more like indigenous people, which gets a little more dicey because the 80s needed to get a little more woke.
• 31:13
SPEAKER_01: But um it kind of was the beginning of a a certain type of horror film that would stick around for a while.
• 31:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm sure there's still ones that come out, it's just not really my cup of tea.
• 31:27
  SPEAKER_01: Cup of tea.
• 31:29
SPEAKER_03: So we watched the trailer for the remake for this movie.
• 31:33
  SPEAKER_03: Indeed.
• 31:34
SPEAKER_03: And it seemed a little bit more focused on the nuclear mutation that was implied in this film.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_03: I also I really feel like the only time that we kind of got a sense of that is the son that gets pushed off the rack by the dog.
• 31:54
SPEAKER_03: Do we ever know his name?
• 31:56
SPEAKER_01: Uh I I could not understand what they were saying, but I can report back to you in just a moment.
• 32:01
SPEAKER_03: He just seemed like he was like developmentally disabled.
• 32:07
SPEAKER_01: But I would say that was probably more a product of inbreeding because you know your DNA is not meant to mix with itself.
• 32:15
SPEAKER_01: And so I don't know, I don't know if I can get a read on how much that the nuclear, nuclear stuff really, uh, really had a hold on.
• 32:30
SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was like a little bit implied, but oh, I think his name was maybe Mercury.
• 32:37
SPEAKER_01: Oh because there was Mercury Mama, the guy that was pushed off by Beast.
• 32:43
SPEAKER_01: There is Mercury, Mama, Ruby, Pluto is the uh the famous one.
• 32:49
SPEAKER_01: Mars was the guy that stabbed at the end, and then Jupiter is the dad.
• 32:55
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 32:56
  SPEAKER_01: A very uh astrological.
• 32:58
SPEAKER_01: I was about to say they know a lot about the planets here, I guess.
• 33:02
  SPEAKER_01: Except Mama.
• 33:03
SPEAKER_03: Well, that's um Okay, interesting.
• 33:08
SPEAKER_01: Uh, so, and then I would say the other place that the Hills have Eyes has taken in horror, the horror canon, is that um Pluto has become somewhat of an icon of horror, one of the classic villains, and his appearance in this film is actually the um his real life appearance.
• 33:31
SPEAKER_01: Uh he suffers from hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a rare condition leaving him with no sweat glands, hair, fingernails, or teeth.
• 33:44
  SPEAKER_00: Wow.
• 33:46
SPEAKER_01: So he was um I read that he was a lock for casting in this movie.
• 33:53
SPEAKER_01: Has he been in other films?
• 33:55
  SPEAKER_01: Uh he has.
• 33:56
SPEAKER_01: He was what we read at the beginning.
• 33:58
  SPEAKER_01: He's been in the Devil's Rejects.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_01: Um, let me see, I can get you a few more.
• 34:03
SPEAKER_03: You can take what was given to you and really turn it around.
• 34:07
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
• 34:08
SPEAKER_01: And the thing is, is that as you kind of got to see him more over the movie, it's not like he looked disgusting.
• 34:16
SPEAKER_01: Like I think that you're exactly right.
• 34:20
SPEAKER_01: Like, he wasn't gonna let that get him down.
• 34:22
  SPEAKER_01: He's become a star since then.
• 34:24
SPEAKER_01: It looks like he's known for a movie called Weird Science, The Hills Have Eyes, The Devil's Rejects, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
• 34:32
SPEAKER_01: Uh He's set for a movie called 86 Zombies in 2021, a movie called Junction Murders in 2020, The Fourth Horseman in 2020, Mr.
• 34:43
  SPEAKER_01: Blue Shirt in 2020.
• 34:45
  SPEAKER_01: Make the money.
• 34:46
SPEAKER_01: The Mad Hatter in 2020.
• 34:48
SPEAKER_01: He's in a lot of movies this year.
• 34:50
  SPEAKER_01: Room 9.
• 34:52
  SPEAKER_01: Jasper in 2021.
• 34:54
  SPEAKER_01: He's got a lot coming up.
• 34:56
  SPEAKER_01: Good for you.
• 34:57
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 34:57
  SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
• 34:59
SPEAKER_03: You know, I just saw this.
• 35:01
SPEAKER_03: Um, there's this little video going around on Facebook on like this man that was in all of these horror films, but he's a great like costume actor, and he is always like the scary villain or like the shadow or like all these things.
• 35:18
SPEAKER_03: But he does very well for himself, but no one would ever recognize him.
• 35:22
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 35:23
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I believe on Scream 4 or on the Scream series, you know, Roger L.
• 35:28
SPEAKER_01: Jackson always does the voice, but I don't know if I believe this, but David Arquette claimed that they never once saw him over the course of those movies.
• 35:37
SPEAKER_01: That they never saw him face to face.
• 35:40
SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it seems like Wes Craven has a thing about uh, you know, people with good voices, good looks.
• 35:48
SPEAKER_01: So, what would you say from The Hills Have Eyes is your most memorable murder?
• 35:54
SPEAKER_03: I think I'm gonna go with the dad.
• 35:57
SPEAKER_01: Ah, being nailed to the tree and exploded.
• 36:00
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think they like stuck a bird's head in his mouth or something.
• 36:05
SPEAKER_03: Or like, and then um the last smoke puff from his mouth.
• 36:12
SPEAKER_04: I would have to say I don't remember the name, but the one that was attacked by the dog Mars.
• 36:21
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 36:21
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm going to, you know, through a draw here and say uh Lynn because I think that was the most shocking to me.
• 36:28
SPEAKER_01: They were in that tussle on the floor, and I thought for sure she was getting out of that.
• 36:33
SPEAKER_01: And then he shot her not once, and I was like, oh, twice.
• 36:36
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh yeah, she was a fighter.
• 36:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but she went down, so I was actually very sad in that moment.
• 36:42
SPEAKER_01: I really felt so this family, they're not bad people.
• 36:48
SPEAKER_01: The dad's a little bit of a racist and needs to get it together, but like I thought that they were going to be a little more victorious than they were, but instead I totally forgot about the dad of the the crazy family.
• 37:01
  SPEAKER_04: That murder.
• 37:02
SPEAKER_04: Oh, way too uh, you know.
• 37:05
SPEAKER_03: Axe to the back, couple gunshots, no, he was pulled oh yeah.
• 37:10
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, pulled on that and then the trailer blew up.
• 37:14
SPEAKER_03: Okay, that deserves some recognition.
• 37:16
SPEAKER_03: That little plan that they came up with.
• 37:18
SPEAKER_04: Oh, that was that was some home alone levels.
• 37:21
  SPEAKER_04: That was good.
• 37:22
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I bel would that work.
• 37:24
  SPEAKER_03: Probably not.
• 37:24
SPEAKER_01: The two matches on the thing.
• 37:26
SPEAKER_03: I probably would have put a couple more matches just in case.
• 37:29
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 37:29
SPEAKER_01: I feel like I sit there and I run a match over a box like five times and I still don't get it.
• 37:34
SPEAKER_01: Actually, I'm really good at lighting matches.
• 37:36
  SPEAKER_01: That was a lie.
• 37:37
SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty bad at lighting matches, so yeah, so I don't know.
• 37:40
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was ingenious, I would say.
• 37:44
SPEAKER_01: And even they had accounted for because I thought, so they set the trap where the cord is going to wrap around his feet and reel him in because they're going to, you know, accelerate the car and the tire is going to pull him in.
• 37:58
SPEAKER_01: And I thought that was like cool, but then I was like, oh, it didn't work.
• 38:06
SPEAKER_01: The car ran out of gas.
• 38:07
  SPEAKER_01: I guess that's it.
• 38:08
SPEAKER_01: But they had come up with a backup plan with this exploding RV.
• 38:12
SPEAKER_04: Also, they ran out of gas when they just went and got gas?
• 38:15
  SPEAKER_03: No, the guys.
• 38:18
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's true.
• 38:19
  SPEAKER_03: He siphoned it out.
• 38:21
  SPEAKER_01: While they were fucking.
• 38:22
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 38:24
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're right.
• 38:25
  SPEAKER_01: Damn.
• 38:27
SPEAKER_01: They really thought through everything.
• 38:28
SPEAKER_01: On a scary scale, one to five, how would you rate the hills have eyes?
• 38:34
SPEAKER_01: That's like a slant rhyme right there.
• 38:37
SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm gonna give it a one.
• 38:40
  SPEAKER_01: A one.
• 38:42
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give it like a two and a half.
• 38:43
SPEAKER_01: I thought it was disturbing.
• 38:44
SPEAKER_01: And like I said, I always think things from the 70s are a little icky because they have like the money to make uh gross effects, but it looks a little homemade, and so that always grosses me out a little bit.
• 38:56
SPEAKER_01: I don't like found footage things either when they're gory.
• 39:04
SPEAKER_01: No, but I'm just saying, I'm just comparing.
• 39:06
  SPEAKER_01: The quality the quality.
• 39:07
SPEAKER_01: I don't like when they're icky found footage things because it always feels like I shouldn't be watching it.
• 39:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not those found footage movies.
• 39:18
  SPEAKER_01: You've signed me up.
• 39:20
SPEAKER_03: Uh remember that one time that Ian left his camera on a tripod and Parker walked in the room and was like, I don't want it to know.
• 39:30
SPEAKER_01: Well, when you walk into a room and there's a camera on a tripod facing a bed, you there's only one thing to think that you live with a couple of YouTubers.
• 39:40
SPEAKER_01: Uh The Hills of Eyes.
• 39:43
  SPEAKER_01: Smash?
• 39:44
  SPEAKER_01: Or slash.
• 39:46
SPEAKER_03: Let me give it a slash.
• 39:51
  SPEAKER_01: Slash.
• 39:52
SPEAKER_03: Ian just fruit ninja this movie.
• 39:57
SPEAKER_01: I'm right on the brink here.
• 40:00
SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I like was affected, but at the same time, I wouldn't choose to watch this movie.
• 40:06
SPEAKER_01: I think because for me, smash or slash means would or wouldn't recommend.
• 40:11
SPEAKER_01: I think I'm right on the line where if you like an old movie, smash, I'll recommend.
• 40:16
SPEAKER_01: But if you're not the person who likes a movie from before like 1990, it's a slash.
• 40:21
SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna recommend it to you.
• 40:23
SPEAKER_01: So I think Parker will remain undecided on this episode.
• 40:28
  SPEAKER_01: Undecided?
• 40:29
  SPEAKER_01: Undecided.
• 40:31
SPEAKER_01: Parker is a neutral on the hills, have I?
• 40:34
SPEAKER_04: You're gonna be paying more in tuition if you stay undecided that long.
• 40:39
  SPEAKER_03: What?
• 40:40
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, choose your majority.
• 40:42
SPEAKER_01: But why would you pay more?
• 40:44
SPEAKER_04: Because you might have to go more easily.
• 40:47
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, I guess that's true.
• 40:48
SPEAKER_01: I thought you were going to say because out of state tuition.
• 40:52
  SPEAKER_01: Because I'm neutral.
• 40:54
  SPEAKER_03: Switzerland.
• 40:56
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
• 40:58
SPEAKER_01: So on that note, I think pretty obvious this may be a sweep here, but what's your favorite scary movie?
• 41:07
SPEAKER_03: I don't have to think about it.
• 41:09
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 41:10
SPEAKER_04: The hill The Lodge, sorry.
• 41:12
  SPEAKER_01: Oh.
• 41:12
  SPEAKER_01: The Lodge Has Eyes?
• 41:14
SPEAKER_01: The Lodge and the Hills.
• 41:15
  SPEAKER_01: The Lodge has Eyes.
• 41:16
  SPEAKER_03: The Lodge.
• 41:17

• 41:33
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
• 41:34
SPEAKER_03: There is one where he was making dog noises and he's like and it's just like and Caroline and I were like just sitting there watching the movie, and then we were like it sounded like someone just had a bad case of food poisoning off.
• 41:52
  SPEAKER_01: Well, so two things.
• 41:54
SPEAKER_01: One, I was thinking about Shits Creek the whole time because Moira wrote she's in a she's in a show, she's in a movie in Shits Creek called The Crows Have Eyes.
• 42:05
SPEAKER_01: But in this movie, I didn't know, but one of the Brin Lynn, she says something like, We're gonna be in a shit creek or up a shit creek or something like that.
• 42:15
SPEAKER_01: And I was just like, oh my these things just commenting back and forth, the dialogue of pop culture, you know, we're seeing it.
• 42:23
SPEAKER_03: Seeing it live, but has nothing to do with the noise.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that noise was bizarre.
• 42:31
SPEAKER_01: All right, next time on what's your favorite scary movie, we are going to hop out of this travel uh spring break series, and we're going to actually hit up a fan request.
