- 0:00Hey, hey, Yeni at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here. And I'm so excited to deliver
- 0:08little bits of insight on living your best, most extraordinary
- 0:14life with, of course, yen, yoga, traditional Chinese medicine,
- 0:20reflexology and even mindset acts.
- 0:25So thank you so much for pressing play on today's
- 0:28episode. Let's do this.
- 0:34Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the Yinning at Life
- 0:38podcast. I'm so happy you're here today.
- 0:42I've got something I want to talk about that still to this
- 0:45day kind of blows my mind that it's happening It's the hustle,
- 0:51right? And I want to speak specifically
- 0:54to the people over 40 here, OK, about how we're still hustling.
- 1:00And let me tell you, as someone who's over 40, I get it.
- 1:04I still sometimes hustle and it's like, it's just not worth
- 1:09it anymore. And I will tell you, as you get
- 1:11older, hustling gets harder. It's kind of like, you know,
- 1:16when you were back and you were like in your 20s and you could
- 1:19drink like, you know, a pitcher of beer and eat a whole large
- 1:23pizza and then literally crash 5 minutes later.
- 1:26Go to sleep, get 4 hours of sleep, get back up and, you
- 1:31know, go about your day and you'd be just fine, right?
- 1:35Well, now, if I tried to do that now, I will tell you I would be
- 1:41out of Commission for days upon days with like probably a
- 1:45hangover, a bloated stomach and inflamed and exhausted.
- 1:51And so the same thing is happening.
- 1:54I find with the hustle culture, like there is so much power in
- 2:04doing less because we actually create more when we do less.
- 2:08And this is something that I will tell you, I struggled with
- 2:12that concept in my mind for the longest time.
- 2:15I was like, wait a minute, if I'm doing less, how can I
- 2:19actually be doing more? But I want to explore why the
- 2:23hustle culture keeps so many of us stuck in OverDrive,
- 2:28especially people over 40, and how yin yoga, breath work,
- 2:33acupressure, meditation, even reflexology have helped me step
- 2:37out of that hustle cycle. And in today's episode, I want
- 2:42you to stick around because I'm going to guide you through a
- 2:46short practice where you can literally feel the shift right
- 2:50away. Like I just got back from a 20
- 2:53minute walk outside. It's beautiful outside today.
- 2:56And I will tell you, when I got up this morning, I started
- 2:59working right away. And then all of a sudden, you
- 3:02know, after about an hour, I was like, I'm feeling kind of
- 3:04drained. And I felt like I was pushing
- 3:06myself. And I was like, OK, no, no, no,
- 3:10I'm not going to do this. I'm going to stop and I'm going
- 3:12to go outside. I literally went out for a 20
- 3:15minute walk. That's it, just 20 minutes.
- 3:18I came back in and I was like, I felt like a completely different
- 3:23person. Now, if you know, in traditional
- 3:26Chinese medicine, our liver loves that we go in flow, that
- 3:31everything is with ease, which is of obviously the complete
- 3:34opposite of hustling, right? So being outside in nature for
- 3:38those 20 minutes, just going for a gentle walk, not only like
- 3:45reset my buttons, cleared out my mind, gave me a little bit more
- 3:50energy, but it also rejuvenated my liver.
- 3:53So it's like a total win. And was I hustling?
- 3:56Absolutely not. But I will tell you, for years I
- 4:01lived in the hustle in the corporate world.
- 4:05The long hours and the constant striving were like my normal.
- 4:09It was like hustle, hustle, push, push, do more.
- 4:14And when I started my own business and I left the
- 4:17corporate world, I thought running my own business, doing
- 4:20the work that I truly love would actually free me.
- 4:24But instead it made me push even harder.
- 4:28Like, how ironic is that, right? And my nervous system stayed
- 4:33switched on. Rest felt weird, it felt wrong.
- 4:39It almost felt guilty, like I was letting something slip.
- 4:43And I was like, shouldn't I be doing something right now?
- 4:47I should be doing something, right?
- 4:51And then I'd be like, well, maybe I shouldn't do something.
- 4:55Maybe I should just rest. Maybe I should go and do some
- 4:57yin yoga right now. Maybe I should go do some breath
- 5:00work meditation, OK. And I started to experiment with
- 5:06that. And then all of a sudden, that
- 5:09need to always feel like I was on right suddenly turned itself
- 5:17off. And I started discovering the
- 5:21real, serious power of pausing. And that real shift came to me
- 5:28when I started reshaping my yin yoga practice.
- 5:32Like yin has always taught me that slowing down isn't
- 5:34weakness, it's actually where clarity and creativity and
- 5:39rejuvenation happen. And the less that I forced, the
- 5:45more space I had for new ideas, for energy, for calm confidence,
- 5:50for balance. I was like, I would come up with
- 5:53the most incredible yin yoga series for my app when I was in
- 6:00my practice. I would come up with like, oh,
- 6:02maybe I should do this for a new breath work class or maybe, oh,
- 6:06this acupressure point would be really cool to teach people.
- 6:11And I was like, Oh my God, like what am I doing right now?
- 6:16I'm in my, in practice, I'm calming my nervous system.
- 6:19I'm not intentionally thinking about creating content or about
- 6:26doing something in my business. It was just happening all on its
- 6:32own so effortlessly. And then I will tell you that my
- 6:37body started to crave these pauses more and more.
- 6:42And sometimes it was only like a 5 minute pause and it was
- 6:45literally almost like I was a light switch and the light
- 6:51switch was turning on for those couple of minutes.
- 6:53And I was like, oh, bright and calm and rejuvenated and relaxed
- 6:57and refreshed. And my nervous system started to
- 7:02get more and more regulated. So right now what I want to do
- 7:07is I want to do a little mini breath work with you guys, OK?
- 7:12Now, if you're driving, please come back to this part of the
- 7:20podcast episode, OK? So that you can really be
- 7:23present. But for those of you that are
- 7:26like, hey, I'm sitting here, I'm on the couch, I'm listening to
- 7:29you or I'm on my yoga mat. I'm ready.
- 7:32I'm down for this, OK? For you guys, find a comfortable
- 7:36seat or lie down. And then I invite you to close
- 7:40your eyes. If you can, place your right
- 7:43hand over your lower belly, and then with your other hand, I
- 7:49want you to use your thumb to gently massage the spot right in
- 7:54the center of the palm of your hand.
- 7:56OK? This is an acupressure point and
- 7:59it's called Pericardium 8. It is super good for calming the
- 8:03heart. It's really good for easing
- 8:06anxiety. It's really good for releasing
- 8:09inflammation. If you've got too much heat in
- 8:13your digestion, like your digestive system, it helps with
- 8:17that. It's just a really calming
- 8:22point. I love it.
- 8:23And it's so easy to find because it's literally in the center of
- 8:26the palm of your hand. OK, so as you're pressing on
- 8:30this point, start to take long, slow, deep breaths through your
- 8:35nose for a count of four, and then hold it in for a moment and
- 8:40then exhale gently through the mouth for six counts, OK?
- 8:45And as you breathe, feel your belly soften into your hand.
- 8:50Let your shoulders melt, OK, and we'll do it again.
- 8:56Let's inhale for four counts through the nose and then exhale
- 9:05for sex. Just notice right now how this
- 9:14feels, OK? Now release the pressure on that
- 9:24acupressure point on your palm and actually go to the other
- 9:27hand. OK, And you're going to press
- 9:30the same spot, so right in the center, the palm of your hand,
- 9:34you're going to press with your opposite thumb.
- 9:37And together let's start to inhale through the nose for 1234
- 9:46and then exhale through an open mouth for 654321.
- 9:57Inhale 1 234. Exhale 6543211.
- 10:13More time. Inhale 1234.
- 10:20Exhale 65432 one Slowly release your thumb from the point.
- 10:34Pause for a moment here. Just let your breath come back
- 10:37to an unmeasured state. Notice again after just pausing
- 10:44for literally all we did was 2 minutes.
- 10:47How do you feel? Scan your body, notice if you
- 10:55feel any vibration where you were pressing on that point.
- 11:00What does the heart center feel like?
- 11:04What kind of energy do you feel in your body right now?
- 11:12Like sometimes even with a a practice even 2 minutes can just
- 11:21stop the hustle and rejuvenate the nervous system.
- 11:29Like I will tell you now that I've been practicing regulating
- 11:33my nervous system regularly with all these practices, I can drop
- 11:39in so much faster. And where that 20 minute walk
- 11:43that I went on today before that would actually take me an hour,
- 11:48maybe even longer to reset. Now in like 1520 minutes, I
- 11:54literally feel like a completely different person.
- 11:59So if that kind of tiny pause felt really nourishing for you,
- 12:03imagine what a consistent practice could do for you.
- 12:07I have 3 free yen Yoga classes to get you started.
- 12:12One of them is actually an acupressure meditation for inner
- 12:17peace and mindfulness. So let's stop the spiraling,
- 12:21right? There's another one for
- 12:23abundance. So I do an abundance meditation
- 12:26to shift your mindset from scarcity and lack into abundance
- 12:31and freedom. And then there's a really juicy
- 12:3560 minute hip and shoulder opening practice.
- 12:40Who doesn't love opening those tight shoulders and hips, right?
- 12:46So you can get all of that, those free classes, if you're
- 12:51like, you know what, I'm already sold.
- 12:54I'm ready to go. Then you can sign up for my 7
- 12:56day free trial on my membership and you can explore a full
- 13:01plethora of content. Yin yoga, breath work,
- 13:06acupressure, reflexology, meditation.
- 13:09I've got yin yoga series and there's one that's super really
- 13:15calming right now and that people are just absolutely
- 13:17loving. And it's my 14 day Unwind and
- 13:20Calm series. It is specifically designed to
- 13:24soothe your nervous system and that's inside the membership or
- 13:28it's available on its own for lifetime access for a one time
- 13:32fee. I'll link all of that
- 13:34information in the show notes for you.
- 13:36OK, now I want to come back to the hustle culture because I
- 13:44will tell you the guilt part about slowing down for me, and I
- 13:50know for a lot of people was like, well, if I rest, then I'm
- 13:54being lazy, right? But I will tell you, rest is not
- 14:00laziness. We need rest.
- 14:03Our nervous system needs rest. It doesn't need to be in the
- 14:07sympathetic flight or fright state all the time.
- 14:10It needs rest and digest. It needs that parasympathetic
- 14:15state, and I'll tell you, a lot of us don't even get that when
- 14:19we're sleeping because we don't sleep that well.
- 14:23But I will tell you rest is the most fertile ground where your
- 14:28best ideas, health and joy are birthed.
- 14:32Seriously. Like I will tell you that the
- 14:36more I push and the more I hustle, first of all, the more
- 14:40burnt out I get. But secondly, you know what else
- 14:43happens? I get super frustrated and
- 14:45irritated and then what happens? My liver goes, oh, we don't like
- 14:50that because we don't like frustration.
- 14:52We like ease, we like flow. We like let's just roll with it,
- 15:00not let's push and let's force all the time.
- 15:03So when we do less, we nourish our liver, we calm and regulate
- 15:10our nervous system. And you know what?
- 15:13We are far more creative and inspired and are living more of
- 15:18that extraordinary life. Because I'll tell you when you
- 15:23get to be over 40, at that point, you're like, you know
- 15:27what? I should be living my
- 15:29extraordinary life by now. Like, come on.
- 15:32Right. Like I've done all the things.
- 15:35Maybe some of you are out there. Like I've had the kids and now
- 15:37they're old enough to be on their own.
- 15:40You know what? Yeah, I'm in the corporate
- 15:42world. But you know what?
- 15:43I don't have to prove myself anymore.
- 15:45I'm really good at what I do and I don't need to over deliver to
- 15:52prove my worth. Right?
- 15:54Like when we're younger, we have a lot less confidence, we're far
- 15:58more insecure. And so there's more of that
- 16:00tendency to push and to force and to hustle, right?
- 16:04And when we start a new job, like I don't know how many times
- 16:07I started, you know, in the corporate world or starting a
- 16:10new job where it would be like, well, you know what, like I'm
- 16:13new here. I really got to prove myself.
- 16:14I got to push, I got to force. I'm going to work like 15 hours
- 16:17a day even though everybody else is working 8 and a 8 1/2.
- 16:20And I got into that mentality. Well, I'll tell you when you get
- 16:24over 40, you're like, I'm not down for that anymore.
- 16:27I'm not working no 1415 hour days.
- 16:30And even for myself now at running my own business, having
- 16:34my own online yin yoga and well-being app and my in person
- 16:39reflexology business, like I work, maybe I'm going to say,
- 16:47and this is like I'm being a little bit over generous here.
- 16:51I probably work about 5 hours a day, four days a week.
- 16:57That's it. Like I work about 20 hours a
- 16:59week, that's it. Whereas in my corporate days, I
- 17:05was working like 14-15 hours a day, five days a week.
- 17:10So that's about 7075 hours, right?
- 17:13And then sometimes the weekend would roll around and I'd be,
- 17:17you know, doing overtime. So you know what?
- 17:23Been there, done that. Life is too short.
- 17:27And when we get over the age of 40, we really just want to start
- 17:30living our best life, right? So remember, rest is not being
- 17:35lazy. It's actually being productive.
- 17:39So thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
- 17:43I hope you give yourself permission to pause, even if
- 17:47that is 2 minutes a day. Like I will tell you, start with
- 17:50two minutes. Don't be like, Oh my God, like
- 17:52I'm going to dedicate an hour to myself every day because you
- 17:56know what, it's probably not going to happen.
- 17:58But if you have the time, if you're like, you know what?
- 18:00I know I have an hour in my day to carve out.
- 18:03Try separating it first, right? 15 minutes here, 10 minutes
- 18:07there. Like truncate it throughout the
- 18:09day or depending on your schedule and see how that rolls.
- 18:14But definitely, please promise me that you were going to give
- 18:18yourself permission to pause for however length of time you want
- 18:23it. And on our soulfully in app,
- 18:26we've got practices as short as 5 minutes and as long as 60
- 18:31minutes. So you get to choose how long
- 18:34you want to pause for. Feel free to share this episode
- 18:40with a friend who needs that reminder.
- 18:42Hey, you know what? You've been hustling a little
- 18:44bit too much too. Why don't you slow down, check
- 18:47out my free classes, see if I'm the right vibe for you, get on
- 18:51the seven day free trial or get my unload and com 14 day series.
- 18:58So here's to actually creating more by doing a whole lot less,
- 19:04right? Who is down for that?
- 19:06If you are, leave me a comment in this podcast episode and let
- 19:12me know that you know what? I am done with the hustle
- 19:15culture. I am ready to live my best life.
- 19:19I am ready to create more by doing less.
- 19:23And for some of you, this might even spark something within your
- 19:29career maybe that you're like not happy with.
- 19:31And you're like, you know what? This girl's right.
- 19:35I, I don't want to, I don't want to work this hard or I'm not
- 19:38happy working here. I'm not fulfilled.
- 19:40I want to find something that really aligns with who I am
- 19:44meant to be. And when we're over 40, we sure
- 19:48as heck should be like, you know what?
- 19:51It's time to start focusing on ourselves and reconnecting to
- 19:56ourselves. So thanks so much again for
- 19:58pressing play. I will see you next week.
