- Adam Rutz: The formula to success, it's E plus R equals O. Event plus response equals outcome. It's one of the most important lessons taught by the godfather of mental performance, Ken Revisa. And the idea is simple. You rarely get to control the event, but you always have influence over your response. And your response gives you the best chance at creating the outcome you want. Think about when you're competing. You're a baseball player, you make an error in the field. Or you're a wide receiver, you drop a pass when you're wide open. You're a salesperson, somebody tells you no. The event already happened. It's over with. The question is, what happens next? Because a bad play doesn't have to become a bad game. A bad conversation doesn't have to become a bad day. One mistake does not have to become another mistake. But that happens when we let the event control the response. That's where mental performance comes in. We're training ourselves to respond with intention instead of emotion. Not pretending that we're not frustrated, not pretending the mistake didn't happen, but recognizing what happened, accepting it, and then choosing the response that gives us the best chance to move forward. Come back to your breath. Take one big deep breath. Reset, release, refocus, re-engage. Here's what I want you to be mindful of today. When something happens that you don't like, don't immediately react. Give yourself a moment and ask, what response gives me the best chance at the outcome I want? You can't always control what happens to you. You can always control what happens next. And elite performers. Understand that your response to adversity can be more important than the adversity itself. The event is over. Your response is still yours. Choose a response that's going to give you the best chance at the outcome you want. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
