- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for March 17, 2026 Is it selfish or just a misunderstanding?
- 0:06Navigating conflicting needs Yesterday I gave caring for a sick spouse as an
- 0:11example of balancing care for both others and ourselves.
- 0:14It's actually a fairly easy case, unless your spouse is all drama and demands when they're sick.
- 0:19There are plenty of other places where we need to work out this balance in our
- 0:22marriages, and most of them are far trickier.
- 0:25How we spend money can be one such issue.
- 0:28Other examples would be where we eat or what movie or TV shows we watch.
- 0:32This can certainly be an issue in the bedroom, which we will discuss on Friday.
- 0:36It also comes out in our preferences.
- 0:38He wants coffee and breakfast before being exposed to the news,
- 0:41while she wants to listen to a news channel as the coffee brews.
- 0:45She wants it quiet in the evening while he needs music to feel good.
- 0:49Some of these things can be easily resolved.
- 0:51Both the examples I gave are solved with headphones or earbuds.
- 0:55Other issues have no simple fix.
- 0:57If she needs to get out of the house with him on the weekend and he needs to
- 1:01rest from his week, someone is going to have to sacrifice.
- 1:04What makes all of this so difficult is we have no easy way to judge how much
- 1:08our spouse needs what they want.
- 1:10Is not getting what they desire annoying or is it soul-crushing?
- 1:13Will a bit of what they want do the job or do they need a lot of it?
- 1:17When my wife needed to go to the ER, I didn't have to measure her desire.
- 1:21I didn't consider asking if she could wait until the next morning.
- 1:25Similarly, if I knew something was critical to her mental health or sense of
- 1:29well-being, I'd be strongly motivated to make it happen.
- 1:32But if I don't need the same thing for my mental health, or only require a fraction
- 1:36of what she needs, I don't understand how important it is for her.
- 1:39If I say no because I'm tired, you could say I'm being selfish.
- 1:43But if I can't judge the need accurately, am I really being selfish?
- 1:47The only solution here is a lot of very honest, vulnerable conversation.
- 1:51Talk about what you need, why you need it, and how you feel when you don't get it.
- 1:56Try to rank various needs as you can. Talk about times and situations when a need is stronger.
- 2:01Don't fudge. Give the real truth. If you don't speak up, your spouse won't know
- 2:06what you need, and it will be your fault.
- 2:08This is not a one-time conversation. Our needs will change as our life changes.
- 2:13Additionally, you may initially misjudge how important some things are to you.
- 2:17This is Paul reminding you that talking helps us do marriage well.
